OCI Wyoming mines two flat-lying trona seams that are 3- to 3.5-m- (10- to 11.5-ft-) thick, about10 m (33 ft) apart and 250-m- (820-ft-) deep at its Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding-pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. The use of yield pillars minimizes the stresses transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. However, yielding must not impact the good, long-term stability needed to prevent subsidence for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel.

The basis for the selection of the ultimate pit for an open-pit mining operation is generally opaque. Some form of value-based analysis will generally guide the final decision; however, the value will often gradually plateau while the ultimate pit size continues to increase. There is no established framework to guide specialists in the selection of the ultimate pit, with such decisions regularly made on a somewhat arbitrary basis. The key component that is missing from the analyses typically used to select the size of the ultimate pit is risk. Once risk is quantified within the analysis framework, the decision-mak-ing range is significantly reduced and the process for select-ing the ultimate pit becomes more consistent, replicable and defensible. The technique outlined in this paper provides an approach to including risk in the process used to select the ultimate pit.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sept. 22, 2012 when the 2012 class is inducted during a special ceremony in Las Vegas, NV in conjunction with MINExpo 2012. The NMHF&M will induct four men representing the equipment manufacturing, minerals exploration, copper and coal sectors of the mining industry. The diverse cross-section of mining industry giants joining the hall of fame include Glen A. Barton, J. David Lowell, Samuel Newhouse and John Cleveland Osgood. They will join 214 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 25th Silver Anniversary Induction Banquet & Ceremony. These men were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors within their own sectors and across the industry at large.

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

"Horizontal grinding mills have been used in the mining industry for more than a century, and due to their operational and maintenance simplicity they remain a widely used technology for various stages of comminution. The relative ‘efficiency’ of horizontal grinding mills compared to other comminution equipment is often debated, and efforts to improve the energy efficiency of these mills is an on-going area of attention for process engineers.The discharge arrangement design affects the material transport characteristics within a horizontal grinding mill. Material transport plays a significant role on efficiency of horizontal grinding mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a Greenfield milling operation at Mirabela Mineração’s SantaRita Nickel operation in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, which was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 mtpa (575tph) to produce a P80 of 125um with 10-12% ball charge in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity has been achieved in few days in ABC circuit without grinding media in SAG mill, and has been operating in ABC mode. The through has gradually increased to an average of 800 tph and recently 7% ball charge has been introduced to increase the throughput to +900tph.This paper investigates improved material transport using Outotec’s TPL™ (Turbo Pulp Lifter) technology and the opportunities this technology presents when designing horizontal grinding mills. Operational data, with particular reference to energy and throughput optimization, is presented."

Fluid flow properties of porous media have long been of interest in such varied disciplines as geology, geophysics, soil mechanics, and chemical, civil, and mechanical engineering. This interest has resulted in numerous models of porous media that have been proposed, tested, and found to be useful under, at best, only special circumstances. A critical review of most of these models is given by Scheidegger. 1 The application of each new tool to the study of porous media has helped to test some of the existing theories and to form new ideas based on the new parameters being measured. In the application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to the study of the properties of fluids in porous media, the theoretical studies of Korringa et al.2 resulted in a model for the relaxation of spin polarization of protons in a hydrogenous fluid in a pore of a solid. Seevers3,4 verified this model, established a method for measuring the surface-to-volume-ratio distribution in a porous medium, and proposed a technique for determining specific permeability in sandstones. In the present investigation, the uses of NMR methods are extended and a simple model of porous media is developed from an analysis of pulsed NMR measurements. In this model, the pore spaces of a porous medium are divided into three groups on the basis of their surface-to-volume ratios. To evaluate predictions of the NMR model, laboratory measurements of spin-lattice relaxation time, porosity, permeability, and residual (irreducible) water saturation were conducted on more than 150 sandstone samples obtained from four oil fields in North America. Applications are discussed for estimating the volume of movable fluid, ?p, and the specific permeability, k, of sandstone samples. The former parameter, which can be considered as producible porosity, is expressed by ?p = [1 -- (Swr/100)]? , .... (1) where + is porosity in percent of bulk volume and Swr is the residual (irreducible) water saturation in percent of pore volume at a capillary pressure of 50 Psi. Fast, nondestructive laboratory methods are described for determining porosity, movable fluid, and permeability of sandstone samples from measurements with a pulsed NMR (spin-echo) apparatus. Procedures are given for adapting these methods to samples of irregular shape and small size. Theory General In the Korringa, Seevers, and Torrey2 (KST) model the observed decrease in the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, of protons of a hydrogenous liquid contained in the pore spaces of a porous solid is attributed to an increase in the correlation time for the random motion of the water molecules and to the presence of paramagnetic centers at the liquid-solid interface. The 22d annual survey of the packaged-fuel industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 26 plants in 8 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for packaged fuel in the United States has declined gradually since the end of World War II, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 70 in 1946 to 26 in 1956. Annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased also during this period, and the decrease in capacity was about proportional to the decrease in operating plants. Packaged-fuel plants are relatively small, and 85 percent of the active plants in 1956 had an annual capacity of less than 10,000 tons. The same situation prevailed in 1946, when 84 percent of the plants had a capacity of less than 10,000 tons. Total capacity for the 26 active plants in 1956 was 174,600 tons, an average of 6,715 tons per plant. Operating rates in 1956 were the highest since 1951, and the rate of production for the industry averaged 37 percent of capacity.

The eastern and southeastern regions of Ohio are part of Appalachian coal country, with a documented 1,300 miles of streams impacted by acid mine drainage. Since 1995, partnerships of local watershed groups, government agencies, private industries and universities have focused on the remediation of the affected waterways. The partnerships have spent $2.4 million annually in constructing and operating treatment systems such as wetlands, anoxic limestone drains, successive alkalinity production systems, steel slag leach beds, and lime dosers. These systems have been partially successful, and water quality has improved in the region, but no treatment has yet met the ultimate objectives of low cost, continual remediation. Our research group has investigated an alternative system for acid mine drainage treatment: electrolysis combined with pH adjustment to selectively precipitate recoverable, saleable metal products to offset the cost of treatment. We utilized a $0.2 million pilot facility constructed by the Wayne National Forest, in Nelsonville, Ohio, to process approximately 40 L/min of mine drainage from surrounding seeps. The pilot facility has multipurpose tanks that can be adapted to process acid mine drainage with different characteristics, such as high or low aluminum content or high or low carbonate concentrations. Sodium hydroxide was used for pH adjustment. Results indicate that saleable product can be generated with this treatment technology. In an initial, not optimized trial, one seep yielded 4.7 kg of dried 69 % iron oxide product from 10 hours of pilot facility operation, treating 23,000 L with electricity costs of $4.68. Dissolved iron concentrations in the water were reduced from 242 ± 18 mg/L to 2.8 ± 2.0 mg/L (99.0 % removal) while the initial acidity of 443 mg/L as CaCO3 was neutralized to an alkalinity of 160 mg/L as CaCO3. Iron oxide can be sold as pigment for an average of $1.47 per kg in the United States. Currently, approximately 80 % of all pigment used in the United States is imported, and there is incentive to purchase domestically recovered pigment. If the iron oxide from the pilot facility could be sold as pigment for $1.47 per kg, 43 % of the operating cost (raw materials, electricity and construction costs) of treatment could be offset by the sale of the product. Considering the cost offset, the electrolysis process shows potential as a sustainable low cost alternative for treating acid mine drainage.

Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

"The end of an era in zinc metallurgy took place on July 31, 1976 when the horizontal retort furnaces of the National Zinc Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma were permanently shut down (1) . For more than a century, horizontal retorting had been the most common method of producing zinc in the United States; it was a thriving industry in many parts of that country, especially in the natural gas belts of Oklahoma and Texas. With the Bartlesville closure, yet another metallurgical process has become an object of historical interest for North American metallurgists. Although shrouded in controversy, the origins of zinc metallurgy seem to date back at least 2000 years. Pyrometallurgical methods with carbon reductants are capable of producing zinc from oxidic zinc ores, but only above the boiling point of the metal. Although slow cooling results in re-oxidation of the zinc vapour by air or carbon monoxide, quenching yields liquid zinc; some form of rapid cooling, either accidental or intentional, was likely used by ancient metallurgists to liquify the metal. Zinc metal found in Athenian objects of the Roman era was likely of accidental origin. The Romans employed brass extensively for coins and ornaments(2) , and this was intentionally produced by the calamine process whereby oxidic zinc ores were added to molten copper under strongly reducing conditions. Zinc appears to have been known in China and India as early as 1000-1300 A.D., and was probably smelted commercially in those countries from the 14th century. Although the early metallurgical procedures were probably inefficient, they were able to produce zinc metal in significant amounts. The large heaps of zinc residues with clay retorts bear testimony to an early smelting industry of impressive magnitude. It is estimated that the heaps at Zawar, India alone represent the extraction of 100 000 tons of metallic zinc(2) In the 1730s the smelting of oxidic zinc ores was developed in England using a vertical retort method. In 1788 a British patent was granted for making zinc from zinc blends (ZnS) by roasting the ore in a coalfired reverberatory furnace, mixing the calcine with charcoal and smelting the mixture with suitable zinc condensation. The English process was very energy intensive, however, and early in the 19th century the Belgians developed a horizontal retort process for the reductiondistillation of zinc that was more fuel efficient. This technique was gradually developed into what came to be known as the Belgian process, the forerunner of the ""modern"" horizontal retort furnace."

"1 INTRODUCTIONThe use of nondestructive testing (NDT) methods to evaluate the integrity of Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) and Drilled Displacement (DD) piles has been a subject of significant debate among engineers, contractors and NDT practitioners. This guideline document will illustrate the importance of reviewing all available information in conjunction with the NDT records. ACIP and DD piles have unique properties that must be considered when using a specific NDT method. Any evaluation of the integrity of an ACIP or DD pile must also include a thorough review of the detailed pile installation records and the site specific soil conditions. Long or theoretical descriptions of the methods have not been included in this publication. More detailed information about these NDT methods including their theoretical and historical backgrounds can be found in DFI’s Manual for Non Destructive Testing and Evaluation of Drilled Shafts (2004). Additional information can also be found in the more comprehensive textbook Nondestructive Testing of Deep Foundations by Hertlein and Davis (2006).1.1 PurposeThe intent of this guideline is to provide practical guidance for the proper interpretation of NDT results on ACIP and DD piles. Short descriptions of the main integrity methods available are provided along with several examples of how to use all of the information available to make sound engineering judgments about the results. This publication is a state-of-the-practice guideline to promote accurate engineering evaluations.For engineers inexperienced with NDT, these guidelines provide sufficient background information on NDT methods to help understand the limitations of the testing, assess the results presented to them, and formulate appropriate questions. This is particularly important for engineers charged with the responsibility to determine from those results what, if any, consequences there may be on the performance of the structure under construction."

"The intact rock constant, mi, is one of the three basic input parameters required for the widelyused Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Values for the constant should ideally be determined by statistical analysis of laboratory test data. In this paper the influence of the inclusion or exclusion of tensile test data on derived values is discussed. We firstly investigate the relationship between direct tensile strength (DTS) test values and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) test values based on a literature search, finding that the correlation between the two test types is DTS = 0.9*BTS, independent of the lithology being tested. Secondly, using the shear strength database of Douglas (2002), we examine the influence of confining pressure range and the inclusion or exclusion of DTS and BTS test values on calculated values of mi.Chief amongst the influences was the exclusion of tensile data in the calculation procedure, particularly when the Hoek triaxial confining stress range requirement (?3?max = 0.5?c) was not satisfied. Based on a reasonable 1:1 relationship between R (the ratio of unconfined compressive to tensile strength), use of actual tensile data in the calculations for the Hoek brown failure criterion is considered to be a simpler and more robust approach to the use of a tensile cutoff based on empirical criteria such as that of Fairhurst (1964). We advocate the fitting a failure curve using compressive and tensile test data as the most reliable means of calculating mi, while at the same time satisfying requirements as originally advocated by Hoek relating to the appropriate triaxial confining stress range (?3?max = 0.5?c) and sufficient (>5) evenlyspread data points. As fractures are propagated through rocks, energy is absorbed near the extending crack tip. Apparent surface energies for several rocks have been measured by cleavage under dynamic con-ditions. At nominal crack velocities from 0.5 to 500 in (min, measurements showed that fractures propagated in discrete jumps. Calculated surface energies and moduli were relatively insensitive to nominal rate of cleavage. in another set of experiments, rocks were cleaved under high confining stresses. The rocks were submerged in low leak-off fluids which formed a filter cake on the freshly cleaved surfaces (similar to the hydraulic lracturing process). Apparent surface energies were increased substantially as the surrounding fluid pressure was increased. Moduli in bending increased significantly upon application of the first 1,000 psi but were insensitive to stress level at greater pressures. INTRODUCTION For almost 20 years, hydraulic fracturing processes have been utilized effectively to stimulate oil and gas wells. During this period, some process improvements have resulted from studies of fracture orientation, mechanics of fracturing, areas generated, conductivities of cracks, etc. Yet many questions remain concerning the conditions and pressures needed during fracture propagation. In this paper we will report additional studies of the mechanics of fracture extension. It was shown previously3 that large rock samples could be cleaved under controlled conditions so as to measure the apparent surface energy (that amount of energy absorbed per unit area of new surface created). In this paper we consider the effects of two additional factors on surface energies, viz.: (1) effect of cleavage rate and (2) effect of confining stress level. THEORY Cleavage experiments were conducted on rock samples similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Blocks of rock several inches wide, 2- to 3-in. thick, and up to 3 ft in length were grooved longitudinally with shallow guide slots. A crack was initiated and allowed to extend along the web as the top of the rock specimen was pulled (or pushed) apart. Auxiliary equipment permits the measurement of (1) force applied at the top, (2) separation at the top and (3) crack length. (Further experimental details will be given in the next section.) The rock beams created by the crack are considered ton be cantilever beams. The deflection (or separation of the rock beams) at any point is calculated 4,5 by the beam Eq. 1.

A legislação brasileira prevê que a destinação correta dos resíduos sólidos industriais é obrigatoriedade do gerador. Porém esta é uma das principais dificuldades encontradas, já que o processo produtivo gera resíduos e impactos ambientais. Entretanto, estes resíduos podem ser aproveitados para aumentar a ecoeficiência e como um objeto maior a ecoefetividade, reduzindo os impactos, aumentando a eficiência econômica e ambiental e contribuindo para a sustentabilidade. O setor metal-mecânico igualmente enfrenta a problemática do gerenciamento ambiental, então, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a ecoeficiência e ecoefetividade dos métodos empregados na limpeza de cavacos metálicos contaminados com fluido de corte de empresas metalúrgicas. Foi realizado um estudo sobre a reutilização do cavaco de alumínio, analisando os métodos utilizados, a destinação caso não possível reutilizar e avaliado a ecoeficiência e ecoefetividade. Esta avaliação foi realizada por critérios estudados, onde é possível avaliar métodos como ecoeficientes e ecoefetivos. Na prática foram encontrados somente métodos ecoeficientes e, entre estes, alguns com práticas ecoefetivas. Os resultados evidenciam que a cultura de reparar, reutilizar, reciclar e destinar, ao invés de promover ações como a remodelagem de um sistema produtivo em ciclo fechado onde não há geração de resíduos é ainda mais prático e realístico.

Slag from smelting reduction processes were characterized by chemical analysis, XRD, SEM-EDS and XRF. The results revealed Ag concentrations of 362 g/t of slag, the slag mineralogical characterization by XRD and SEM-EDS showed mineralogical species oxidized complex containing Pb, Zn, Ca, Si, Fe, As, S in its structure, silver was found in globules associated lead in the slag and the furutobeite specie. The leaching study was conducted to evaluate process variables such as NaCN concentration: from 7.8x10-3M - 1.26x10-1M, temperature: 25-50°C, particle size: +140 mesh to -400 mesh, stirring speed of 750 rpm - 900 rpm. All studies were performed with a NaOH concentration of 0.2 M. The optimal values of silver recovery encountered in conditions of 7.8x10-3M NaCN, agitation rate of 750 rpm, temperature of 35°C and with a treatment time of 240 min. We also observed that a particle size -400 mesh will have optimum recoveries compared to +140 mesh, +200, +270 and +325.

Pertinent data on both classes of substances are difficult to obtain experimentally and consequently are extremely rare; it is therefore necessary in many cases, if equations are to be derived, to introduce certain approximations and assumptions. Lack of adequate means of checking results by utilizing data of different types, such as was done frequently in the bulletins dealing with carbonates and sulphates, are readily apparent to anyone who has made even a cursory examination of the available information. Consequently, some of the relationships derived undoubtedly will be found to be inaccurate when more or better data become available. Near misses recorded and reported by workers can provide awarenessto the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, it is unclear what the value of these reports are, if any, and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. Of those, 167 were valid near misses that occurred at work. Researchers coded the reports using a qualitative 5 × 5 risk matrix. Of the 167 near misses, 19% were deemed low risk, 25% moderate risk, 30% high risk, and 26% critical risk. Several patterns in the near-miss incidents were documented, including classification of incidents and common corrective actions referenced (i.e., elimination/substitution, engineering control or redesign, work process/procedures, and personal protective equipment). The analysis provides insight into ways that risk communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.
