To determine whether reflectors could substitute for the trip lights referred to in the Federal Mine Safety Code, the Bureau of Mines studied trip safety devices under simulated haulageway conditions. The noticeability of reflectors compared with trip lights and fluorescent panels was evaluated from distances of up to 850 feet with light source intensities of up to 1-6 foot-candles (ft c). Reflectors tested consisted of a reflective lens in a holder secured to a frame that can be attached to a trip. Reflectors were found to be suitable for use as a trip safety device. In fact, for the conditions in many underground haulageways some reflectors would be more effective than a permissible trip light.

Zinc smelting is frequently termed a ba.ckward art. The term is hardly true, for great progress has been made in recent years in the design and in the thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, in the quality of retorts, in the recovery of zinc, and in the ability to treat more impure and complex ores. The fact remains, however, that the peculiar physical and chemical properties of zinc have delayed such immense advances-large smelting units, high recovery, lowunit costs, and ability to treat low-grade ores-as have been made in the metallurgy of lead and copper. In current retort-smelting practice, the ores, if carbonates, are calcined to remove carbon dioxide; or, if sulphides, are roasted to remove sulphur. The sulphur must be eliminated as completely as possible, usually to less than 1 per cent. This means that the roast must be continued for a long time at a high temperature, with resulting high cost and small capacity per furnace. The roasted ore is mixed with about 50 per cent of its weight of reducer, which may be fine coke, anthracite, or nonbituminous coal. This mixture is charged into horizontal fire-clay retorts. The retorts used in this country are about 8 inches in internal diameter by 4 feet in length and hold 50 or 60 pou~ds of ore. The diameter of the retort is limited by the tirrie required for the heat to penetrate to the center of the charge; the length by the strength of the retort, which at the high temperature employed can not support the weight of the charge if the span is more than about 50 inches. The retorts are heated externally by coal, natural gas, qr ·producer gas to a temperature of 1,200° C. or more. The zinc oxide is reduced to zinc, which is volatile at this temperature, and passes into a conical fire-clay condenser. attached to one end of the retort, where it conde_nses to liquid zinc and is removed. Twenty-four hours are required for distillation, and because of the low heat conductivity of the retort walls 11.nd of the ore charge itself, the heat efficiency even of the most modern regenerative furnacei;; is only about 12 per cent. The retorts have a short life, 30 to 6Q days, at the high temperature required-; zinc losses are heavy, usually 10 per cent or more; and the proportion of impurities in the retort charge must be carefully controlled to prevent the rapid corrosion of retorts. For these reasons, much work has been done in an e:ff ort to, find cheaper and more efficient methods o.f recovering zinc from its ores. Various methods have been proposed for smelting in the blast furnace. Some of these contemplated the production of zinc vapor and its condensation to liquid; others attempted to produce liquid zinc directly by smelting under pressure. It is now realized that fundamental difficulties render these proposals impracticable. The electric furnace for smelting offers obvious advantages in the way of the efficient utilization of energy, large units, easy attainment of high temperatures, and the possibility of treating complex ores. E. H. and A. H. Cowles first suggested a design for an electric furnace for the reduction of zinc ores and patented their process in 1885. Their attention was soon directed to other uses for their furnace and nothing further of importance was done in the electric smelting of zinc until about 1900. Several investigators then started work upon various processes and had more or less success. The chief difficulty they encountered was the impossibility of obtaining more, than a small amount of the zinc as liquid metal because most of the zinc vapor condensed as blue powder. Interest in the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc increased, many patents on processes and furnace design were taken out, and the literature on the subject grew, until in 1914 and 1915 the problem seemed to be approaching solution. About this time the hydrometallurgy of zinc, the development of which had been lagging somewhat behind that of the electrothermic metallurgy, sprang into the limelight and a commercial process was soon perfected. This rapid development, perhaps aided by the war premium on the high-grade spelter produced by electrolytic deposition, distracted attention from electric smelting to some extent, though progress continued. With the perfection and standardization of the electrolytic process has come a better realization of its limitations, especially the necessity for large-scale operation ·and the difficulty of obtaining high extraction. Because of these limitations the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc still has a field of its own and in fac-t promises to become a strong competitor of both hydrometallurgy and retort smelting except under conditions highly favorable to the latter methods. Because of the imperfections of the retort and electrolytic processes and the promise that the electric furnace offers in overcoming these imperfections, the. United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, has undertaken a study of the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc.

LARGE copper whiskers (-100 p) of 11111 orientation were tested in a floor-model Instron testing machine, at liquid nitrogen temperature. (Testing methods will appear elsewhere.) Whiskers deformed by twinning after some initial deformation. A load-elongation curve at the onset of twinning is reproduced in Fig. 1. Twinning was confirmed by taking a back-reflection Laue picture, using a slit colli-mator, which showed distinct splitting of reflections. The tensile stress reached just before twinning is about 1.4 x 107 g per sq cm (-7.0 x106 g per sq cm—resolved shear stress) which drops to 1.2 x107 g per sq cm (-6 x 106 g per sq cm—resolved). This twinning stress is about five to ten times larger than the value for bulk single crystals of copper deformed at 77°K (-106 g per sq cm—resolved). Twinning models based on Cottrell-Bilby's pole mechanism are discussed in detail by Venables.' In the present work a mechanism based on the idea of failure of a Lomer-Cottrell barrier by recombination will be proposed. An L-C barrier may fail either by recombination or by dissociation.3 Fig. 2 provides the necessary information. It shows that the stress necessary to break such a barrier is about 1.8 x 107 g per sq cm by recombination and 4 x 107 g per sq cm by dissociation at 77°K. The twinning stress reached by whiskers is comparable to the stress level required for failure of an L-C barrier by recombination. (Stroh himself points out that his calculations should not be taken too literally.) Exploration expenditures in Alaska last year amounted to $8.9 million. This was comparable to 1985's $9.1 million. Development expenditures dropped 29%, $24.3 million in 1986 vs. $34.1 million in 1985. The exploration industry is restructuring and stabilizing after the loss of major mineral firms during the last few years. These included Anaconda Minerals, Asarco, Hecla Mining, Enserch Exploration, Phillips Minerals Division, Exxon Minerals, Noranda Inc., General Crude, Mohawk Oil & Gas, Inspiration Development, Teton Exploration, and St. Joe Minerals Division. Some of these companies were mineral subsidiaries of oil companies and were either dissolved or redirected to programs outside of Alaska. However, recent entry exploration firms include Echo Bay Mines Ltd., Long Lac Minerals, and Exvenco. They are busy evaluating prospects and mineral developments in the southeastern panhandle. In the 1970s, about $254 million was spent on Alaska mineral exploration. Of this, about 5% ($12 million) was for nonmetallics and coal, about 26% was directed at precious metals ($66 million) mainly gold, and 69% ($175.3 million) for the base metals zinc, copper, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, and nickel. Since the early 1980s, trends have reversed. Of the nearly $196.3 million spent from 1981-1986, 48% has been for precious metals ($94.3 million) and 40% on nonmetallics and coal. In the last two years, nearly 70% of the Alaskan exploration dollar has been spent in search of precious metals. Three gold skarns were explored during the year - the Nixon Fork project in western Alaska (Battle Mountain Mining Co.), the Nebesna and Rambler lodes of the northern Wrangell Mountains (Nebesna Mining Partners), and the Zackley project near Paxson in southcentral Alaska (Nerco Minerals). Nearly 7.6 km (25,000 ft) of diamond and rotary drilling were conducted on these three properties. Table 19 and figure 7 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface metal/nonmetal mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 19 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. A total of 79 fires occurred in 16 states during 1990-2001 for these mines. Forty-five of the fires caused 44 injuries and 2 fatalities (including 9 fires and 7 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 6.6 fires and 3.7 injuries. Sixty-five fires with 31 injuries and 2 fatalities occurred at metal mines, and 14 fires with 13 injuries occurred at nonmetal mines. The Ewhr value was 546 x 106 hr (In = 0.016), and the LWD value was 13,134. Nevada and Arizona had the most fires (19 fires, 10 injuries, and 1 fatality; and 19 fires and 11 injuries, respectively). They were followed by Minnesota (11 fires, 4 injuries, and 1 fatality) and Alaska (6 fires and 4 injuries). Of these states, Alaska had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.079). Table 20, partly illustrated in figure 8, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires increased during the second period, then decreased during most of the remaining periods. The number of fire injuries decreased during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the last period), accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the third and fourth periods). The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the number of fire injuries. Tables 21-26 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 9 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 27 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

Over the years as surface mining operations have become more sophisticated, angle drilling has become a more popular blast design technique, especially in areas where overburden and stripping ratios have increased. Another method of blast design is the staggered pattern, which greatly improves explosives distribution within the blast. While both methods present some engineering challenges, this paper will discuss how the two methods can be combined to enhance fragmentation, improve cast percentage, drill production ratios and highwall control. A practical engineering approach will be presented as well as a discussion on the discipline required to maintain a quality blasting plan.

1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. "Selectively recovering pentlandite from high levels of pyrrhotite presents a technical and operational challenge. The liberation characteristics and also the chemical environment is critical to performing a successful separation. Reviewing the mineralogy to understand the characteristics of the ore and the plant flotation behavior is fundamental to designing a successful improvement program.At Savannah Nickel the challenges presented by a falling nickel price required a rethink of the flowsheet to improve the project economics through improving the concentrate grade and recoveries. Glencore Technology reviewed the plant performance and proposed and tested solutions to improve the grade performance of the concentrator with the support of the plant team. A pilot plant comprising a M20 IsamillTM followed by an L500/1 Jameson Cell was operated on various plant streams. In addition to the pilot plant, flotation surveys and a plant based laboratory program was used to supplement the plant understanding and within two weeks significant improvements were identified and demonstrated. The combination of the pilot operation and the plant based laboratory program was able to quickly demonstrate the improvements and test with equipment that is fully scaleable from pilot plant to full scale.IntroductionPanoramic Resources Limited is a Western Australian mining company formed in 2001 for the purpose of developing the Savannah Nickel Project in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Panoramic successfully commissioned the $65 million Savannah Project in late 2004. The process plant at Savannah comprises a single stage crusher, SAG mill, flotation, thickening and filtering stages to produce a bulk nickel, copper, cobalt concentrate. Metallurgical recoveries average 86-89% for nickel, 94-97% for copper and 89-92% for cobalt. The plant was originally designed for a throughput of 750,000 tonnes per annum, but has consistently outperformed the design specifications.Due to low nickel prices the Savannah Nickel mine and processing plant were placed into care and maintenance in May 2016. Prior to suspending production Glencore Technology was engaged to investigate options to improve the concentrate grade. With the discovery of Savannah North in 2014 and the Savannah North Scoping Study demonstrating LoM ~8 years and Mining Inventory of 6.07Mt @ 1.26% Ni, 0.64% Cu and 0.09% Co significant future potential exists. By completing pilot plant studies prior to shutting down, the plant engineering studies can be completed and the plant readied for restart by the time the nickel price improves."

"SUMMARYWaste management in general, and the water treatment of mine and mill effluents, has become an ever increasing burden for mining operations. A reduction in these expenditures would undoubtedly be desirable if this could in fact be achieved within effluent guidelines and monitoring requirements.A brief summary is presented of the research which has as its aim the development of methods which would reduce such costs and lead to solutions for environmentally acceptable close-out conditions for acid generating mine waters. The basic concepts of Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing are presented, together with an indication of the present state of these research efforts. Details are provided of the progress of various experiments which aim to promote reducing conditions, organic matter production and the establishment of biological filters which remove metals from the water which are then retained within the waste management areas. These conditions should lead to a curtailment of acid drainage and an improvement in effluent quality.A description is provided of the first pilot demonstration using this approach to achieve a walk-away condition for the close-out of a massive sulphide tailings resulting from 10 years of operating a copper/zinc concentrator in Northern Ontario.1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Waste management and close-outIt is recognized that the achievement of a cost-effective and competitive mining operation, from the commencement of exploration for ore bodies through to the day-to-day efficient operation of the mine, requires a certain expertise and sophistication. "Lately, the development work in closed circuit grinding has mainly been focused on mills and on different types of instrumentation, mathematical models and automation in spite of the fact that the poor efficiency of the classifier is well known. It has also been proven by several investigations that by improving the sharpness of classifier separation, remarkable technical and economical advantages can be achieved. Some attempts to improve the performance of the most common classifier, hydrocyclone, have been made, among them injection of wash water above the spigot cyclone and retreatment of either or both of the products of the primary classifier. No method has been successful enough to achieve general adoption in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to introduce some industrial results achieved by two-stage classification where the coarse product of the turbulent-flow classifier, hydrocyclone, is cleaned in a laminar-flow cone classifier.The main target of the adoption of the two-stage classification circuit it naturally to improve the sharpness of size separation. This again leads to the following advantages in the grinding process:- lower circulating load and increased capacity- lower energy consumptionnarrower size distribution in the fine product- less overgrinding and less slimes- reduced specific surface areaThese improvements, no doubt, reflect on the subsequent concentrating process in the following aspects:the rate of flotation is improved, less reagents and energy is neededthe recovery and grade of valuable minerals in concentrates is improved- savings in dewatering can be expected- less fines in tailings improve the conditions for water recirculation."

This report describes a Bureau of Mines study undertaken to determine the applications and limitations of solution techniques as a general method of fluorescent X-ray spectrographic analysis. Systematic errors due to variations in particle size, surface preparation, and sample inhomogeneity are eliminated by the use of solutions. The range of applicability of fluorescent X-ray spectrography is increased in two ways: (1) Samples in the form of wire, filings, turnings, etc., can be analyzed as solutions, and (2) samples submitted as solutions can be analyzed as received 0 The lower limit of detectability varies from 0.14 gram per liter for sulfur, atomic number 16, to 0.0015 gram per liter for strontium, atomic number 38. Most elements have limits of detectability between 0.02 and 0.002 gram per liter.

A coal waste disposal dam failed on Buffalo Creek near Saunders, West Virginia, on February 26, 1972. This accident resulted in the loss of 125 lives, left over 4000 people homeless, and resulted in millions of dollars in damage to several downstream communities. As a result of this tragic event, major changes occurred in the mine waste disposal practices used by the U.S. coal industry. This paper summarizes changes in U.S. coal-waste disposal practices in the nearly 35 years since the Buffalo Creek dam failure and identifies safety issues that need to be addressed for continued improvement. While many organizations and individuals have played roles in the improvements that have occurred, this paper focuses on the role played by MSHA and its predecessor agencies.

The following observations on the mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, are based upon the examination of a collection of specimens made during a brief visit to the mine in January, 1942, in conjunction with earlier studies of specimens and mill products, which have 'been the subject of various Mineragraphic Reports, Captain's Flat is about 35 miles south of Canberra, and is connected with the main line from Goulburn to Bombala by a branch line to Bungendore, 23 miles away from the mine.The geology of the mine has been described by Kenny and Mulholland2 and by Harper.3 The country consists of Silurian sediments, which have been invaded by a composite sill of quartz-felspar-porphyry. Both sediments and sill have been folded gently, the axial lines of the folds trending north and south. In the vicinity of the orebodies the folds are steeper, and thru,st faults are associated with the anticlines. The intense compression and shearing that accompanied the faulting has converted the adjacent porphyry to schist. The Captain's Flat orebodies occur along such a zone of shearing and faulting, on the eastern limb of a steep, north-pitching anticline. At their southern end the orebodies are enclosed in the slates underlying the porphyry, but the northerly pitch of the fold carries the slate to greater depth in the northern part of the mine, where the orebody lies beween schistose porphyry on the hanging wall and massive porphyry in the footwall.THE OREBODIESThe orebodies occur along a N.-S. strike length of 4,200 ft., and from the point of view of mining, fall into three sections: the Elliot's Section to the north, the Central Section, and the Keating's Section to the south. The Keating's Section is separated from the Central Section by 500-600 ft. of mineralised ground of so low a grade as' to be called barren, and is offset about 125 ft. to the 'east of the Central body by an oblique fault striking N.300E. Wastes generated by our society and the question on how to dispose them is, nowadays, a relevant matter of concern. The objective of the present work was to characterize the technical properties of composites made of discarded jute sackcloth with its coarse wove fabric, serving as reinforcement phase, and polyethylene wastes collected from city dumps, as continuous matrix. Different amounts, up to 30 wt.% of jute plain weave, fabric were press molded at 160°Ctogether with sieved polyethylene particles. The resulting composites displayed mechanical properties that could compete with those of low-density wooden board. Both by presenting a solution to, otherwise, disposed wastes and by helping to prevent deforestation, the investigated composite may be regarded as an environmentally correct material.

An asymptotic solution to the equation that describes the flow of a slightly compressible fluid in an infinite porous medium has been used to estimate the interaction between two adjacent wells producing from a common reservoir. A direct method for approximating the interference time defined by Stevens and Thodosl has been suggested. An alternative definition for the time of interference, based on the minimum pressure change in the interference region, has been proposed; also, a direct method of determination has been prescribed. Examples have been employed to illustrate the use of both methods.

The financial performance of the mining industry, measured by return on equity and capital employed, has been inadequate for many years. Consequently, mining companies are not valued highly by stock markets. Among the more important causes for the decline in the sector are the conservative working practices and reluctance to adapt to change or to develop new technology, although some relatively recent developments such as SX-EW copper and heap leach gold have made a significant impact on the cost base of these metals. The subsidiary business of metals exploration suffers from the same problems as the rest of the industry. The rate of discovery of ore deposits has been falling over many years and since the late 1990s, there has been a sharp reduction in global exploration activity that, if it continues, will further reduce the global supply of new ore reserves. New technological developments, particularly in geophysics and different operational practices may help reverse this trend. Statistical methods for evaluating the risk of ore reserve estimates will also improve the economic return on new mining ventures. The science of ore geology has potential to reduce exploration risk, but modern ore genetic theory has not contributed greatly to recent discoveries. The junior exploration market has almost ceased, but a new style of technically specialized efficient small exploration company has emerged which, in alliances with major companies, may be the vehicle for future global exploration. Exploration in virgin terrains has a higher risk discounted potential for the discovery of very large orebodies than that in known mining districts but mining companies have little financial incentive for this high risk exploration because of the very long lead time to production. Alliances of two or more companies reduce the risk in both the exploration for and development of major new mining projects. If new orebodies are not found, then metal prices will inevitably rise in the long term. Governments of industrial countries, particularly those with a significant mining industry such as Canada, should therefore provide assistance to exploration in order to maintain their existing industry and prevent a metals shortage from developing in the future with its consequent impact on the world economy and increased environmental damage as large lowgrade orebodies are developed to supply an expanding market.

La Mine Mouska exploite depuis deux ans certains blocs de réserve à l?aide de la méthode long trou. Même si, à priori, la méthode long trou semble rentable, le contrôle de la dilution ainsi que le respect d?un échéancier serré s?avèrent primordiaux afin que cette méthode d?exploitation puisse être justifiable économiquement. La présentation suivante fera la comparaison économique entre cette méthode et celle de chambre-magasin.

Predicting the future is a task that should always be delegated. If that is not possible, then stating your views confidently, but retrospectively, is preferable. Hindsight encourages clarity of thought and sharpens perception. When all else fails one can look back into history and see the trends, evaluate the current situation and project it a little way into the future - in this case 10 years. In exploration the rate of change has been increasing over the past 20 years. With expected developments in technology, legislation, and their sociological impacts, we will see such rapid change over the next decade as to make us uncomfortable, unless we are prepared for it.   The social obligations of our industry also have changed enormously over the past 20 years and are still changing. This will lead to further changes in the way we conduct our business if we wish to stay in business. As exploration technology improves, a further dimension is added by the expectations of the communities in which we operate. This extra dimension needs to be quantified so that we not only keep up with current developments but also get ahead of the game. This paper is based on the New Zealand experience, some of which will be familiar to mineral explorers in other countries.
