Human-caused global warming has become the environmental cause celebre of the early 21st century. The strong warming alarmist camp currently includes the United Nations, most Western governments, most of the free press, many large corporations (including Enron, before it failed), the major churches, most scientific organisations and a large portion of general public opinion. This phalanx of support notwithstanding there is no scientific consensus as to the danger of human-induced climate change. There is, therefore, a strong conflict between the level of public alarm and its scientific justification. How can this be? In a democracy, the media serve to convey to the public the facts and hypotheses of climate change as provided by individual scientists, governmental and international research agencies, and NGO and other lobby groups. In general, the media have promulgated an alarmist cause for climate change; they have certainly failed to convey the degree of uncertainty that is characteristic of climate science, or a balanced summary of the many essential facts that are relevant to human causation. Climate change is as much a geological as it is a meteorological issue. Natural climate changes, both warmings and coolings, are indeed a societal hazard. We usually deal with geological hazards by providing civil defence authorities and the public with accurate, evidence-based, general information about events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and floods, and then by adapting to the effects when a damaging event occurs. As for other major natural disasters, the appropriate preparation for extreme climate events is to mitigate and manage the negative effects when they occur, and especially so for dangerous coolings. Attempting instead to æstop climate changeÆ by reducing human carbon dioxide emissions is a costly exercise of utter futility. Rational climate policies must be based on adaptation to dangerous change as and when it occurs, and irrespective of its sign or causation. The issue now is no longer climate change as such, the reality of which will always be with us. Rather, the issues are, first, the failure of the free press to inform the public about the true facts of human-caused climate change and of the dangers posed by natural climate change. And, second, the vested interests held by many of the groups of warming alarmists. These interests include not only the obvious commercial ones, but also the many scientists and science managers who have discounted or remained silent about the huge uncertainties of the human-caused global warming hypothesis because it suited them to do so. Public opinion will soon demand an explanation as to why experienced editors and hardened investigative journalists, worldwide, have melted before the blowtorch of self-induced guilt, political correctness and special interest expediency that marks the sophisms of global warming alarmists.

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. The Geological Strength Index (GSI) is a system of rock mass characterization that has been developed in engineering rock mechanics to meet the need for reliable input data related to rock mass properties required as input for numerical analysis or closed-form solutions for designing tunnels, slopes, or foundations in rocks. The geological character of the rock material, together with the visual assessment of the mass it forms, is used as a direct input for the selection of parameters for predicting rock mass strength and deformability. This approach enables a rock mass to be considered as a mechanical continuum without losing the influence that geology has on its mechanical properties. It also provides a field method for characterizing difficult-to-describe rock masses. Recommendations on the use of GSI are given and, in addition, cases where the GSI is not applicable are discussed.

D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. South Africa?s primary electricity supplier, Eskom, provides incentives to reduce power demand during critical times by granting capital through a Demand Side Management programme. DSM encourages the end user to review and optimize energy consuming systems and use capital, provided by Eskom, to purchase or modify the equipment required to achieve a load-shift. As part of the DSM agreement the mine ultimately acquires the capital equipment and benefits from reduced power costs, but in return is required to sustain the load-shift tactic for up to five years. The paper focuses on one DSM tactic, main fan energy management. In this case, reduced air flows during selected peak and off peak periods, results in a substantial reduction in peak power demand. DSM incentives provided capital for automated main fan control as well as improved control of the mine ventilation systems. "The vulnerability of Canadian and U.S. companies, their directors, officers and employees to onerous penalties associated with violations of environmental statutes and common law actions has provided the impetus for the increasing use of environmental audits. This trend is developing in direct proponion to the cost and difficulty of obtaining liability insurance. Companies operating in British Columbia should be cognizant of developing legislative and enforcement trends and their implications for individual and corporate responsibility. Canadian mining companies doing business in the U.S. should be particularly aware of the environmental exposure which may be assumed with property acquisition or by operations which produce or use any of an ever-increasing list of regulated substances.The environmental audit is now a key component of prudent business planning which will identify noncompliances and environmental liabilities, outline defensive strategies, and assist in a legal defence should charges be laid. This paper will discuss the purpose and mechanics of an environmental audit with emphasis on those features which will maximize protection against statutory and common law actions.IntroductionThe environmental audit is but one weapon in a comprehensive defensive strategy for corporate and individual survival in an increasingly litigious world. The principles of the environmental audit have been formulated as a logical response by management to an ever-growing list of environmental vulnerabilities, which often have the potential to result in plant shutdowns, prosecutions or fmancial liability of major proportions. Accordingly, the audit may play a critical role in maintaining profitability as well as assisting in the defence of a company and its employees against actions taken by regulatory agencies and citi7.cns under statute and common law. Should convictions result from these actions, the penalties are likely to be ameliorated by the demonstration of due diligence through management policy supporting the audit procedure.An awareness of environmental sensitivities, strict adherence to licensing requirements, and planning for environmental emergencies are now generally considered to be as important to profitable performance as operating costs, metal prices, and labour peace. Why is this so? The increased priority given to environmental matters is partly a result of changing attitudes amongst the mining profession, but perhaps more importantly, it is also a direct consequence of the proliferation of ever more stringent environmental legislation, the targeting of management for responsibility and the draconian penalties imposed for violations of such legislation. Contributing to this trend are recent court decisions involving disputes of an environmental nature in which the standard of care required for a successful defence now requires almost super-human diligence in environmental management. The principle of ""strict liability"" (in which negligence or permit violation does not have to be shown) is also being increasingly applied in the resolution of civil actions."

Researchers are exploring the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to measure concentrations of gas emissions in situations where such measurements are otherwise extremely difficult to obtain, such as NO and NO2 (NOx) emissions from surface mine blasting. Recently, countries have imposed or are planning to impose surface blasting gas pollution regulations, which creates a need for an improved understanding of UAV-based gas measuring systems. The experiments detailed in this paper were performed to determine if airflow generated by the rotors, also known as downwash, unnaturally alters concentration measurements. Downwash turbulence could create locations of varying pressure, which could affect density-based concentrations as measured by some governing entities, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). 

The iron ore deposits of the Port Hedland district of North Western Australia are associated with band'ed sedimentary iron formations that form part of the local succession of folded and faulted Archaean volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The iron formations are regarded as the protore beds or sources of the iron which became concentrated by supergene processes to form commercial grade iron ore deposits.Iron oxide deposits occurring in situ within the protore beds are considered to be of residual-replacement origin, due to supergene leaching of gangue minerals and' deposition of secondary iron oxides in their place, Two types of deposit have been recognized. Lode deposits are deep lenses of massive hematite located adjacent to major faults. These deposits are thought to be very old and to have originated by supergene processes during the long period of erosion represented by the major unconformity between the Archaean rocks and the overlying Proterozoic beds. The other type, known as crust ore deposits, are shallow cappings of hematite and goethite on hills formed by the outcrops of steeply dipping protore beds. These deposits could have originated as far back as the early Mesozoic and it is possible that the ore-forming process is continuing at a slow rate at the present day.Deposits formed by erosion and re-deposition of material derived from pre-existing residual-type deposits are known as derived deposits. These include conglomerates and scree accumulations of various types and ages and pisolitic deposits formed by supergene leaching of transported detritus. Derived deposits range in age from early Proterozoic to Recent. "Laboratory investigations on two complex ores, the A1 zone ore from Les Mines Selbaie and the Lyon Lake ore from Mattabi Mines Ltd. (Division of Noranda Minerals), have been carried out to determine some of the main variables in collectorless flotation. In particular, the effect of pulp potential (controlled by gas composition), conditioning time, pH and grinding media have been studied.Chalcopyrite showed the greatest response to collectorless flotation among the four major sulphide minerals present, followed by galena. Flotation of sphalerite was variable from minimal to important depending on the mineralogy and the pre-treatment performed. Appreciable silver recovery was achieved collectorlessly for the Lyon Lake ore while it could not be achieved for the A1 zone ore of Les Mines Selbaie. It appears that the difference between the two ores is related to silver's predominance as tetrahydrite in the Lyon Lake ore while it is as argentite and native silver in the A1 zone ore.The response of the ores to collectorless flotation is strongly dependent on the pulp potential, Ep, and pH. Using different gas compositions and different conditioning times it was found that collectorless flotation occurs when Ep is +195 to +295 mv (vs SHE). The actual on-set potential for collectorless flotation is dependent on the ore. A too high potential or prolonged oxidation leads to a decrease in selectivity. Some other factors were examined, notably the effect of pH and the type of grinding media on the selectivity achieved in the laboratory.Preliminary results from a plant trial at Mattabi Mines Ltd. confirmed that collectorless flotation occurs and that it is preferential for chalcopyrite and to a lesser extent galena. Collectorless flotation was not attempted at Les Mines Selbaie. However, examination of the distribution of collector between the different addition points in the copper circuit suggests that it may be present."

Keywords: thermodynamic, Ni-Co alloy powders, composition, fibrous The mathematics model of Ni(II)-Co(II)-C2O42?-NH3?H2O-H2O of thermodynamic equilibrium system has been developed theoretically according to the law of conservation of mass and the law of simultaneous equilibrium, and the logarithm concentration-pH (log[Me2+]T-pH) diagrams of this system have been made. The effect of ligand and pH value was studied. Two issues in coprecipitation route to synthesize fibrous nickel-cobalt alloy precursor powder, com-position and morphology which are a first priority, are addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and experiments. The results show that suitable pH value range of coprecipitation of nickel ions and cobalt ions in theory can be obtained to maintain fibrous, excellent compositonal homogeneity and stoichiometry in coprecipitation products. Experimental demonstration is also carried out.

Support system design for tunnels and underground excavations has for many years relied heavily on the use of rock mass classification systems and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion as a means for characterizing rock mass behaviour. Because of their development, both the GSI system and the Hoek-Brown criterion admirably characterize most ?normal? rockmasses from the viewpoint of their behaviour for rock excavations. They, however, run into difficulties when applied at the two ends of the rock competence scale. This is largely because block size and incipient strength are such that rockmass behaviour in these domains tends not to be controlled by interblock shear strength but rather by material strength. At the low end of the rock competence scale (UCSi <<15 MPa and GSI generally <30) discontinuities play less of a role and rock mass strength tends to matrix strength. Similarly, at the high end of the scale (GSI >>65, mi>>15), because discontinuities are now widely spaced, block size becomes so significant that again, intact material behaviour rather than the fracturing becomes the dominant factor controlling rock mass strength. In this paper several case examples are presented to illustrate the application of the high-end (spalling) and low-end (weak ground) transition Hoek-Brown relationships proposed by Carter, Diederichs and Carvalho (2007) as a basis for better defining rockmass behaviour at the extreme ends of the rock competence scale.

The cost of equipment maintenance is the largest single expense at many mines and processing plants. It is not unusual for a maintenance and repair budget to be larger than 50% of the punt&apos;s total budget. Generally, in the mining industry, 400-60% of the work force in a plant reports to the maintenance department. Studies have shown that many plant maintenance workers are only 33 to 40% productive, working 2.6 to 3.7 hours of every 8-hour day. In recent years, many companies have begun to recognize that- productivity improvements and cost reductions can he achieved by upgrading maintenance methods. This paper discusses ten common causes of low maintenance productivity and how recent advancements in computing technology can be utilized to address these causes for low productivity.

Bulk ore tailings from the Macraes gold mine gold extraction process are stored in a large (ca 0.6 km2, 80 m deep) mixed tailings impoundment whose pH is maintained near 8 by natural rock neutralizing capacity. The mixed tailings will be stored in this impoundment in perpetuity after mining ceases. Confidence in the long term environmental stability of these tailings can be gained from examination of mineralogically and chemically similar geological situations in the immediate vicinity. A sequence, typically about 5 m thick, of sands and gravels derived from the Macraes mineralized zone 12 000 to 28 000 years ago contains rounded detrital sulphide mineral grains which are unoxidized despite close proximity to the surface and occasional incursion of oxygenated waters. Saturating water pH is currently 7-8. Sands with 0.2 to 0.8 wt % organic carbon host sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), and localized cementation by authigenic framboidal pyrite has occurred. Comparison of the 28 000 year-old sediments with the modem tailings suggests that similar chemistry will prevail, possibly with deposition of authigenic pyrite in the tailings, in the long term. As long as the present slightly anoxic and circumneutral pH environmental conditions are maintained in the mixed tailings dam, sulphide decomposition and acidification are unlikely. These sediments provide a plausible geological analogue for long-term benign storage of the mixed tailings impoundment.

Colloidal interactions play a critical role in mineral processing, including grinding, physical separation (particularly flotation), dewatering, and tailings management. Despite great energy input in comminution to liberate valuables from gangues, heterocoagulation between valuables and gangues would prevent the separation of valuables from gangues. On the other hand, selective coagulation/flocculation to increase the size of desired fine particles could enhance physical separation and dewatering, while dispersion is needed for fine grinding. To control the state of colloidal dispersions by creating favorable conditions, it is of paramount importance to study colloidal interactions in a relevant system and understand underlying mechanisms. This review summarizes recent advances in developing the-state-of-the-art techniques and novel methods of measuring colloidal forces, including atomic force microscope, surface force apparatus, zeta potential distribution measurement, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, and our recently developed integrated dynamic force apparatus. The basic principle of each technique was introduced first, followed by a summary of critical information derived for the relevant mineral processing systems. Finally, the pros and cons of each technique were discussed to emphasize the use of complementary techniques that assist in solving fundamental problems in mineral processing.

In a previous paper of this series (1) ,t it was shown that during the creep of single crystals of lead, deformation proceeded to some extent by means of slip on the octahedral plane. This was demonstrated by the formation of slip lines on the surface of the specimens. At first, a few broad bands appeared after a small amount of extension had taken place; then, as extension proceeded, more and finer lines made their appearance until the whole of the specimen surface was covered.The present paper deals with the process of deformation of the creep specimens as revealed by X-ray examination..By the use of this method, the changes taking place in the crystal structure can be observed.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe method of preparation of the specimens, their size and the purity of the lead employed have been reported elsewhere (1). At frequent intervals, the specimens were dismantled from the test rack and X-ray back reflection photographs were taken. The specimens were so marked and set up on the X-ray machine that the same spot on the specimen surface was always examined.Copper radiation was employed, the tube voltage and current being 45 kV. and 25 m.a. respectively and the exposure time 2 hrs. The slit diameter was 1 mm.

The Canada Line is a 19km long automated light rapid transit system with 16 stations in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The Concession was awarded to InTransitBC to design, build, partially finance, operate, and maintain the system for 35 years. The project must be complete by November 2009 to be ready for the 2010 Winter Olympics to be held in Vancouver and Whistler, BC. The bored tunnel section consists of 2.45 km of twin bored tunnel and 3 stations. The station work is limited to the excavations and temporary support necessary to facilitate the bored tunnel works. A joint venture between SNC-Lavalin Constructors Pacific and SELI (SSJV) has recently completed the design and construction of this section. Work for the bored tunnel commenced in November 2005 with shoring and excavation works for the tunnelling operations pit that will become Olympic Village Station and will be completed in the spring of 2008. The tunnels were driven with a 6m diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBM) and lined with 250mm thick, 5.3m diameter precast concrete segments. Seven hundred and fifty meters of each tunnel were driven through glacial and interglacial deposits of sand, silt, and clay with granitic boulders. The paper discusses the challenges faced in negotiating these soils which contained unforeseen geological conditions. These conditions were overcome by developing a systematic approach to Risk Management that included thorough risk assessments, regular risk management meetings with the participation of two of the world?s leading EPBM experts, Professor Eisenstein and Professor Kovári, and by the ability of the construction team to effectively analyze and mitigate problems.

For some of us, the most disagreeable part of being the blaster- in - charge is doing the required paperwork. Cost coding on time cards, drilling reports, magazine inventory logs, and blast records all eat into our time. When all goes well, which I suppose is 98% of the time, the blast records are submitted and filed, probably never to be seen again. Sometimes a progressive operation will use the information documented in the blast reports to evaluate blasting effectiveness and improve results. When the report is consistently used in this fashion, costs can be reduced and other efficiencies will be realized. A blast report in times past was a simple form that mainly was used to keep track of the drill footage and of the powder used in the shot. However, as the population and consequences of careless blasting increase, multiple levels of blast documentation are now being required nearly everywhere, during all phases of the drill and blast process. We are now compelled to create preliminary blast designs prior to commencing work. We are required to submit pre-blast plans before each shot, and we need to generate post-blast reports that document the details and results of each shot.

Foundation and excavation problems associated with lock construction projects vary widely. Each lock requires a different foundation to respond to a unique geologic setting. The range of heights and founding materials are illustrated thru description of selected structures encountered in the United States. Examples range from 113-ft high John Day Lock on the Columbia River founded on basalt rock to the 17-ft high Lock No. 5 on the Arkansas River floated on a clay foundation. A description of the basic elements of design and construction is presented. Several case histories involving lock design and construction are assessed to aid in recognition of potential problem areas on forthcoming construction. In the past decade there have been many improvements in construction materials and techniques. The application of these new approaches to lock construction is discussed.
