It has been previously documented that various weather conditions such as wind direction and speed, cloud cover and, especially, temperature inversions can significantly affect the overpressure generated by a blast event (Siskind et al, 1980; Oriard, 1999; Siskind, 2000). The overpressure can be magnified downwind and reduced upwind; a change in the regular profile of temperature with elevation can magnify or focus the sound intensity at some distance from the blast event.

We introduced a numerical method that is applicable for the analysis of static and dynamic deformations of elastic media. In this numerical study, each elastic body is modeled with a system of several hundred rigid particles that are joined together elastically. Maximum shear stress fields due to external loading are obtained and compared with those obtained by photoelastic experiment. Preliminary results are presented for the stresses generated in circular disk shaped bodies idealized with connected systems of particles. Extension of this simulation method to fragmentation of brittle materials is also illustrated in an example.

Na indústria da mineração, a liga Fe-Cr-C destaca-se como um revestimento duro em chapas de desgaste objetivando aumentar a vida útil do ativo. Três ligas, duas delas contendo Fe-Cr-C, sendo uma com aproximadamente 28% (p) de Cr e outra com 38% (p) de Cr e uma terceira liga com 24% (p) de Cr e 7,0% (p) de Nb foram levadas a ensaios de desgaste abrasivo roda de borracha conforme norma ASTM G65-04, além de medições de dureza, microdureza e caracterizações microestruturais. Constatou-se que os revestimentos contendo Nb, depositados com uma ou duas camadas de solda, possuem maior resistência ao desgaste abrasivo, seguidos pelos com maior teor de Cr. Os revestimentos que possuem maior fração volumétrica de carbonetos, finamente distribuídos na matriz, apresentaram os melhores resultados na resistência ao desgaste. Analisando no microscópio confocal 3D os revestimentos contendo Cr, notou-se que os mecanismos de desgaste são do tipo microcorte e microssulcamento, enquanto naqueles contendo nióbio prevalece o desgaste por rolamento em boa parte da superfície. A liga contendo Nb apresenta o melhor desempenho na resistência ao desgaste abrasivo em relação às demais, e se torna viável economicamente sua aplicação na indústria.

Numerical simulations of the physicochemical processes related to acid rock drainage (ARD) in the Sugar Shack South rock pile of the Questa Mine were performed with the TOUGH AMD simulator. The objectives were to 1) identify the main processes responsible for observed present-day conditions, 2) provide an estimate of gas phase humidity transfer, and 3) give a preliminary indication of the potential impact of closure involving the installation of an alluvial soil cover. Modeling results indicated that the mine rock geometry (thin layers placed along steep mountain slopes) favors the onset of strong thermal air convection. Simulations also indicate that resloping the piles would not significantly reduce convection and oxidation. For simulation purposes, a potential cover with the permeability range of a local alluvium was investigated and found to be of questionable effectiveness since its permeability can exceed the value of 3x10-13 m2 required to prevent thermal air convection and reduce ARD.

Tables based on 1985 data, which were not available in time for publication of the "1985 Minerals Yearbook," are included in this chapter; corresponding tables for 1986 are not yet available. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1986 had an estimated value of $23.5 billion, an increase of $0.25 billion over the 1985 value. This is the fourth consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a de- crease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 14 out of 15 years. Industrial minerals growth slowed from a 3% increase in value in 1985 to a 1.5% increase in 1986, reflecting the slow growth in the domestic economy. The value of industrial minerals, more than three times larger than the value of metals, easily offset the less than 0.5% decline in the value of metal mine production. Although the decline was small, this decrease makes 1986 the fourth year in the past 6 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States. U.S. production continued to lag behind the growing world production. Overall, the estimated raw nonfuel mineral production rose 1% over that of 1985. Domestic mine production of ferrous metals declined as follows, in decreasing order of production: nickel, iron ore, tungsten, and molybdenum. All remaining domestic primary nickel and tungsten mines had closed down by yearend. Nonferrous metals that similarly declined included titanium, rare-earth metals, lead, silver, zinc, and magnesium. For the second consecutive year, aluminum, produced predominantly from imported bauxite, declined in production, while imports reached record-high levels. Somewhat modest gains were made in beryllium and copper. As has been the case for a number of years, gold was a bright spot in the domestic and internation-al metal mining industry. Gold production was spurred on by the increasing usage and development of heapleaching techniques that make lower grade ores, which were previously uneconomical, profitable. Additionally, various mining companies, the U.S. Mint, individual States, and a number of foreign countries began production of gold bullion and commemorative coins. Gold output in the United States increased from 2.43 million troy ounces (revised) in 1985 to about 3.73 million troy ounces in 1986, a dramatic 54% rise.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide)are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines(about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in those two states. Its value was $191 million. In 2004, the estimated U.S. bromine production was 222 kt (244,000 st). That compared with 216 kt (238,000st) produced in 2003.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and chemically precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) have become important mineral-based commodities in recent years. GCC manufacturing generally requires high purity and high brightness deposits of marble, chalk or limestone as the stone source. PCC usually uses limes made from lesser quality limestone deposits. GCC products have a wide span of particle size, with a d50 size ranging from sub micrometers to as large as several inches such as those used in landscaping. PCC products are typically limited to less than 10 µm (1,250 mesh). Each PCC product has a narrowly distributed size range. GCC and PCC products tend to have higher levels of whiteness com-pared with other traditional filler and extenders, such as kaolin and talc. Published statistics of GCC production volume often vary due to the exclusion of certain size range GCC products. According to Roskill’s latest estimate, world GCC capacity was believed to exceed 56 Mt (62 millionst) during 2004 for all grades.

The barite industry has made notable progress since the days when barite was used only as an adulterant in white-lead paints and the only method of mining it was with pick and shovel. The following chronological record may serve to show how this heavy white mineral has grown in importance in the national exonomy and at the same time to indicate development of methods for obtaining it. 1845. - Barite first, mined in Fauquier County, Va., for use as an adulterant in white-lead paints. 1850 (approx.). - French settlers 60 miles southwest of St Louis, Mo., discovered barite; called it "'tiff;' meaning white. It was mined and shipped to St. Louis for use in paint.

THERE has been considerable controversy regarding the structure and mineral constituents produced when iron ore is sintered. This investigation was undertaken in order to establish the fundamental reactions that take place in the sintering process by determining the nature of the resulting minerals. The writer's immediate interest in the subject arose mainly from the request of E. W. Davis for information based on a microscopic study of sinter submitted by him in May, 1926. In the author's preliminary work, samples of iron-ore sinter were secured from the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station and from commercial plants. These were polished by the usual methods for polishing opaque ores. In order to study these surfaces satisfactorily, it is necessary to magnify them rather highly, a range from 100 to 1000 dia. being used. For the higher magnifications oil-immersion lenses and an intense source of light are necessary. After the preliminary study had shown the problems involved, a series of small samples were sintered under carefully controlled conditions and with analyzed materials. Variations in the relative amounts of ore, coal and water were made in order to study the effect of each constituent. The attempt has been to arrive at a clearer understanding of the sintering process and the reactions involved without reference to any preconceived notion as to sinter. It is clear that the study of polished surfaces has yielded results not possible with thin sections alone. The thin sections made in this work were found unsatisfactory at magnification greater than 75, whereas magnifications of 1000 were easily studied with reflected light on carefully polished surfaces. A rather complete statement of observed facts is made so that the reader may form his own conclusions. The writer's interpretations are suggested.

Abstract : The deformation monitoring data of the middle pier of the in permanent ship lock in Three Gorges revealed several interesting deformation phenomena. Conclusions and explanations are made concerning the phenomena in this paper, based on the finite element and engineering geology analyses. Firstly, the fluctuation of the horizontal transformations can be attributed to the alternate excavation of the two neighbouring ship lock rooms. Secondly, the rock mass discontinuities result in the displacement breaks. Lastly, the main reasons for the one-sided leaning phenomena are the natural stress, which is not evenly distributed, and the presence of discontinuities. This paper presents a valuable reference for studying the ‘individual phenomena’ in geotechnical engineering. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Beobachtungs claten an der Mittelpier deformation bezüglich Permannenter Schiffsschleuse in den Drei Schluchten offenbaren einige interessante Deformationsphänomene. Die Schlußforgerungen und Erklärungen dazu in dieser Arbeit basseren methodisch anf der ‚’ ‘Endlichen-Elemente-Analzse’ und der ‘Ingenieurnissen-Geograhnie-Analzse’. Erstens kann die Fluktuation der horiyontalen Transformation durch die ungleichzeitige Ausgrabung der zwei benachbarten Schiffsschleusenräume verursacht werden. Zweitens resultzert die Diskontinuität der Felsenmasse ans dem verlagerten Bruch. Drittens: Die Hauptgründe für das Zu-einer-Seite-Neigung-Phänomen in manchen Stellen sind der ungleich eigeteilte natürliche Druck und das vorhandersein der Diskontinuität. Diese Arbeit präsentiert eine wertvolle Referenz für die Untersuchung der Sonderfälle in geotechnischen Bau. Résumé: Cet article a analysé sérieusement et profondément , en utilisant des procèdes d’étude par exemple l’analyse d’éléments défini et celle de la condition géographique de traveaux , des règles typiques de la déformation montrées dans les données surveillantes à propos de la déformation des pierres centrales dans les écluses éternelles du Trois Gorges , on en a tiré une conclusion : 1) le changement des chiffres des déplacements horizontaux des pierres centrales est causé par les creusages séquentiels des cannelure voisines ; 2) l’inclinaison au Nord de toutes les pierres centrales entre les deuxième et troisième chambres d’écluse est causée par la différence de la gravitation entre les deux chambres d’écluse et par l’existence de la surface structurale ; 3) l’existence de la surface structurale cause le changement des chiffres des déplacements horizontaux des pierres centrales au niveau profond . Cet article donne une référence utile pour l’étude du ‘ problème d’indivudualité’( ou les situations anormaux) dans les données surveillantes de la déformation des pierres centrales de la génie civile.

The author discusses the promising future of the use of pipelines for transportation of ore slurries over long distances, citing existing installations. Various criteria and factors affecting the use and size of pipelines are considered. Among the factors influencing the use of pipelines are particle size, specific gravity, abrasiveness, minimum velocities, and pumping considerations. Long-distance transportation of solids by hydraulic pipelines holds the promise of great economic benefits. Today within the confines of most mineral processing plants, the moving of solids about in slurry form by pipeline is commonplace, since the method offers great advantages when conditions are suitable. Yet, this method is surprisingly slow in being adopted on a broad scale for transportation of solids over long distances (arbitrarily the term will be applied to one over five miles long). This is especially surprising in view of the successful realization in this country within the last five years of two daring ventures in long-distance solids pipelines. A 72-mile long, 6-in. diam pipeline of the American Gilsonite Co. has been satisfactorily transporting 700 tpd of gilsonite from the mine at Bonanza, Utah, to the processing plant at Grand Junction, Colo., since April 1957. The 108-mile long 10-in. diam pipeline of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. has been transporting about 4000 tpd of finely crushed coal from the mine at Cadiz, Ohio, to the Eastlake power plant of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. on Lake Erie since January 1958. However, besides two projects in the operations of The Anaconda Co. there have been hardly any other significant solids pipeline developments in the minerals industry during the last three years. The two projects are the 14-mile long, 6-in. diam copper concentrate gravity pipeline at Anaconda's El Salvador project in Chile which has been transporting about 800 tpd since January 1959. The second is a 16-in. diam tailings pipeline at the Anaconda Reduction Works, Anaconda, Mont., designed to transport about 20,000 tpd of deslimed flotation tailings for dam building. This pipeline, which is currently undergoing tryout tests and which will be about seven miles in length, will have a maximum of three 20-in. rubber-lined centrifugal pumps in series at the starting point, each developing a maximum of 100 ft of head, to supplement gravity. It is the writer's opinion that the major reason for the hesitation in considering pipeline operations is confusion due to an inadequate understanding of the basic physical principles affecting the slurry flow process by many engineers in the industry. This in turn begets an attitude of fear and trepidation instead of confidence on the part of many management executives, which leads to a minimizing of the advantages and exaggeration of difficulties when considering the possibility of a long-distance solids pipeline. The promotion of better understanding and consequently the promotion of greater confidence in the potentials of long-distance solids pipelines when conditions are suitable is thus the main purpose of this article. To this end, after considering several examples of the possibilities for solids pipelines in the minerals field, the relative significance of the major factors affecting pulp flow, and some major aspects of slurry pumping will be discussed on a general qualitative level. Then a brief outline of the semi-empirical quantitative methods developed to date for estimating slurry flow behavior will be presented. SOME POSSIBILITIES To give an idea of the magnitude of the possible economic benefits, it should be interesting to mention briefly some of the projects currently under consideration and to suggest some likely future possibilities. At Anaconda's El Salvador Project in Chile (Fig. 1) it is eventually planned to extend the existing 14-mile pipeline by another 60 miles to bring the copper concentrates down to the coast of the Pacific Ocean. A methodology for assessment and remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) developed at the Sullivan Mine in the West Coast Region has been applied to the closed Blackball Mine, Blackball, West Coast Region. AMD from the Blackball Mine has low pH, high acidity, and elevated levels of iron, aluminium, manganese, nickel, zinc and arsenic. The AMD flows at a variable rate (36 - 101 L/s) into adjacent Ford Creek, causing an increase in acidity and trace element concentrations in the creek. To test the effectiveness of treatment with a simple limestone-based treatment system, a column leaching experiment was conducted over a nine day period. The results show effective removal of acidity, reduction in the concentrations of iron, aluminium, manganese and zinc, and production of alkalinity. To determine if this treatment method reduces the toxicity of the AMD to aquatic invertebrates, a 96 hour ecotoxicity experiment was conducted. The results show a significant decrease in mortality in the treated AMD compared to untreated. The column experiment, in conjunction with the ecotoxicity work, suggest that a passive treatment system consisting of a limestone leaching bed and an open limestone channel may be sufficient to treat the AMD from the Blackball Mine. Further work, such as large-scale treatment trials, is recommended.

En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe el origen de los depósitos a partir de los descubrimientos de módulos manganíferos en el océano pacífico que hicieron Thompson y Murray. Posteriormente Buchanam demuestra la existencia de módulos ferro-manganíferos en aguas poco profundas ( 200 m. ), de composición diferente de las provenientes de aguas profundas. De otro lado, el trabajo señala también la división de los minerales marinos en tres categorías: las sales disueltas y en organismos, los sedimentos y depósitos en el suelo profundo submarino y los depósitos consolidados e inconsolidados de la plataforma continental. Por último, se describe los procesos de beneficio y las ventajas de la explotación de los recursos submarinos en el futuro de la minería submarina.

The Bahamian economy weathered the worldwide recession of the last few years better than most developing countries. This was mainly owing to the ties between the tourist industry of the Bahamas and the U.S. economy. The mineral industry played a minor role in the country's economy. The chief mineral exports included an increasing amount of petroleum products horn the country?s 500,000-barrel-per-day refinery, steel pipe, salt, and aragonite. A 60,001)-barrel-per-day desulfurization facility was completed by Bahamas Oil Refinery Co. (BORCO) in Freeport. The project included vacuum gas oil desulfurization, hydrogen and sulfur recovery, steam generation, water desalinization, and offsite facilities.

This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

This article, advocating having employees whose specific job would be to fire blasts in underground coal mines in llinois, was written 5 years prior to the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and 2 1/2 years before the worst month in U.S. coal mining history, when 692 miners were killed in three separate explosions in December 1907. Obviously something had to be done to improve safety in the use of explosives, and having dedicated shotfirers was a good first step.

This paper describes results from a gender study for a new mine in Pajala, a small community in northern Sweden. Using a gender perspective, the study examines migration, education, local culture, the labour market, and work organisation as problems and opportunities in the regional context for the planned mine. The most obvious ‘gender issue’ for the Swedish mining industry is the very low percentage of employed women, which is even lower among mining workers. To recruit the best people, a company actively needs to attract both women and men; however, the mining companies find it difficult to recruit women as cultural, labour market and educational traditions as well as the mining companies’ own cultures often make it difficult for women to find work in the mining industry.The Torneå river valley, the region surrounding Pajala, has a gender-segregated labour market and gender-stereotyped culture and few young women live in this traditional and oldish region. Many young people leave the region and this is especially true for women. Compared to the rest of Sweden, there is a low educational level, especially among the men. In the mining companies, as in many other male homosocial workplaces, the workplace culture has strong connections to a certain type of traditional masculinity (laddishness, a kind of ‘macho-style’) and for a long time this has excluded women. ‘Gender’, however, is not only a question of recruiting women to a male-dominated industry. An organisation that discriminates according to gender can become inflexible, hindering communication, learning, innovations and change processes. In mining companies, this can manifest itself in hesitant attitudes among the miners about safety as well as organisational and technological development.This study found that companies establishing a presence in this region should develop a strategy for how to deal with and manage the risks and opportunities in the surrounding society (the regional culture) as well as inside the company (the mining culture). This need to be strategic will also be required of future mining companies as they will face higher demands on safety, gender equality, and technology to become modern, efficient and lean organisations.

Operation and Service Manuals resulting from Task 3 are submitted under separate cover as are detailed design drawings and specifications, prepared under Task 1. Both items accompany this report. This report also includes (A) an estimate of the cost of construction, (B) a description covering the use of the equipment, and (C) a proposed test plan to demonstrate performance of the equipment in both the laboratory and a mine.
