INTRODUCTION Although the mining method described in this chapter is locally designated "modified Mitchell," there are so many features which are characteristic of square sets that the designation "modified square set" would describe the method equally well. The method was developed as a result of local operating experience with various mining methods, observing operations in mines in the southwest where Mitchell stoping had been thoroughly developed, and an exhaustive study of min¬ing methods literature. Since 1941, modified Mitchell stopes have con¬tributed over 50% of the total stope production and were largely responsible for supporting production dur¬ing the war years and period of declining manpower and increasing costs. GEOLOGY The community of Gilman is situated on Battle Mountain at an elevation of 2743 m (9000 ft) in the Battle Mountain mining district, about 45 km (28 miles) by highway north of Leadville, CO. The sur¬rounding area, including the Mount of the Holy Cross and Eagle River Canyon, is noted for its beauty and recreational facilities, both summer and winter. Massive sulfide ore bodies of the limestone replace¬ment type occur as chimneys and mantas or as blankets in strata dipping 0.19 rad (11°) northeasterly. A chimney is shaped like an inverted cone with shale, quartzite, and porphyry caprocks forming its base. This relatively impervious capping apparently blocked rising ore constituents which formed the chimneys and mantas. At the apex or lower extremity of the chimneys, the ore follows small fractures and bedding planes in under¬lying quartzite. Dimensions of chimneys vary, ranging up to 61 m (200 ft) vertically and 76 m (250 ft) horizontally near capping. The manta or blanket ore bodies vary in vertical cross section from one hundred to several thousand feet. One such manta was developed from its outcrop to its chimney source approximately 610 m (2000 ft) downdip. Another manta of substantial cross section and length did not follow shale but extended updip with limestone capping from its source at a lower horizon. All chimneys, however, make up to the shale¬quartzite-porphyry capping. Chimney ore minerals are mainly pyrite and chalco¬pyrite with accessory copper and silver minerals, surrounded by, and in places overlain with, marmatite, pyrite, and galena. Manganosiderite extends into the ore. It may or may not be impregnated with sufficient marmatite and galena to be of commercial grade. Ore may be massive, coarsely crystalline, or sandy, some¬times rubbly. Generally speaking, chimney ore masses are incompetent and of variable grade. Caprock is heavy and caves readily. Manta ore minerals are mostly marmatite, pyrite, and galena associated with manganosiderite. Structural characteristics of the ore are similar to those found in chimneys and where the manta contact shale capping the ground is unusually heavy. However, the large manta with limestone capping mentioned previously consisted of a hard strong ore mass in fairly strong host rock. Commercial ore contacts are fairly regular in this manta but in others the ore waste contacts along the walls are irregular with shaly limestone pendants extend¬ing downward into the ore at capping. Dolomite sand is also quite frequently encountered along wall contacts and less frequently overhead. MINING METHODS Practically all stoping in the Gilman ore bodies has been carried on with timber and fill methods and the features which have been briefly described have dictated the choice. Although at the present time modified Mitchell and underhand square-set stopes account for the total production, considerable production has been obtained from alternate horizontal cut-and-fill stopes with Mitchell truss stopes in the pillars. This method was highly satisfactory in the hard manta ore body mentioned earlier and where ore excavations 11 m (35 ft) wide and 23 m (75 ft) long required no auxiliary timber support. Modem mineral processing plants handle large amounts of ore and produce large tailing streams. Plant performance can be optimized when the water is quickly recovered with a thickener. The caisson thickener was developed to overcome process and mechanical problems with the conventional traction and center column units. The caisson is a hollow center column that serves as a pump house. The rake arm structure is supported by a hydrostatic bearing which sits on top of the caisson. The caisson thickener with a hydrostatic bearing has operated for many years in several mineral processing applications.

In Italy at the moment there is a program which involves for the future the exploitation of two uranium mines which are now in the research stage. About one hundred and fifty workers are at present employed in those facilities. An health physics surveillance program is under way and has been designed to fulfill the requirements due to the future exploitation of the two mines. A complete evaluation of the total dose (external + internal) received by the workers will be given together with a detailed analyses of the technical methods employed for such evaluations. The external doses are evaluated on the basis of individual TLD dosimeters, while the evaluation of the internal doses is mainly due to an enviromental survillance program of the radon and radon daughter air concentration inside the mines. The criteria established for the assessment of the sampling procedures, sampling intervals and dose evaluation related to the radon doughter exposure are reported. The external dose received by the workers are lower than 0.2 m Sv~month and the internal exposure less than 6.4 IO-3 J.h.m-3 /year or using the old units 2 WLM/year.

Ventilation is necessary in coal mines to supply fresh air to the working faces for the health, safety, and comfort of the miners, and for the circulation of air to the extent that it will dilute, carry off, and render harmless the noxious or dangerous gases generated. Adequate ventilation depends upon good face control, as well as upon a well designed and properly controlled overall ventilation system. Generally, this includes fans, airways, overcasts, air locks, regulators, checks, and canvas or plastic stoppings near the working places to prevent short circuiting of air, and effective bleeders to maintain a continuous flow away from the working places along the pillar lines at all times and to prevent diffusion of methane back to the pillar line in case of temporary interruptions in ventilation. In the development of a new mine, or the virgin area of an old mine, the main headings should properly be considered a construction project, designed with, only the number of permanently supported (roof) headings required to conduct the necessary air volume to and from the major panels in which mining is conducted by room and pillar or longwall methods. Although subject to hazards from methane quite frequently and requiring constant and careful attention at all times, development of headings has some built in safeguards which make it a less difficult problem in control of methane than exists in pillaring.

This paper describes the leaching of gold with Geobrom® 3400 from a very rich (6.2 kg/tonne) black sand concentrate and its subsequent recovery by ion exchange resins and solvent extraction. The dissolution of gold from black sand ranged from 94 to 96%. Gold loadings and recoveries of nearly 100% were achieved by both ion exchange and solvent extraction methods. The kinetics and equilibrium of loading gold onto ion exchange resins and its elution from the resin were studied. The commercial ion exchange resins PAZ®- 4, DOVEX®- 21K, and Amberlite® XAD- 7, and Great Lakes Chemical experimental GLR-30 were evaluated in this work. Diethylene glycol dibutyl ether was used in all the solvent extraction work for gold recovery from Geobrom leach solution. The consumption of Geobrom was about 130 kg per tonne of the concentrate processed. Therefore, the cost of lixiviant to extract 3.11 x l0-2 kg of gold from the black sand was only about $1.00. Based on the electrochemical regeneration of bromine, the economics of bromine process vs. cyanidation were investigated.

Flow in steep cascades may lead to the occurrence of a nearly periodic train of waves known as slug flow. This, in turn, may result in overtopping of the channel walls and problems with energy dissipation in receiving sumps. Experimental data from an operating facility was used to extend clear water technology for predicting the occurrence of slug flow to conditions with slurry flows. A design methodology and a design chart to determine the region of steady flows is presented that will permit the design engineer to avoid slug flow in cascade systems for conveyance of slurries.

This case history provides a physical benchmark of tunneling technology progress comparing an old hand-mined tunnel to a modern 20-ft-diameter EPB TBM that mined in the same ground. This rare opportunity to see how tunnels were constructed many years ago occurred when an old 10-ft-diameter storm drain tunnel in the way of os Angeles subway construction was demolished and replaced with obas berglass pipe. Steel rib and lagging initial support was exposed showing solid-sawn 2" × 12" × 48" redwood lagging. This paper documents the as-built old tunnel, how it was successfully replaced, and some lessons learned.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a United States Department of Energy facility located in southeastern New Mexico. It is designed for the safe disposal of transuranic radioactive waste in deep geologic salt beds. Westinghouse TRU Solutions, LLC, the managing and operating contractor, undertook a project to simulate the processes at WIPP in order to identify bottlenecks and optimize available resources. The activities simulated in the model included the receipt, processing and disposal of radioactive waste underground, the mining of new areas for future waste disposal and the transportation of salt out of the mine. The complexity of the processes and the interactive requirements between processes required the use of advanced modeling techniques. The simulation model includes a huge number of locations and path network node points, with movement to and from the locations controlled using parameters rather than explicit routing. Information for the timing and sequence of the mining and nuclear waste emplacement operations is brought into the model via spreadsheets. Arrays in the simulation model keep track of past and future events that occur. Routing to the multiple possible positions in the underground mine is done using attributes, and system functions within ProModel in order to allow for a highly flexible sequence of planned events and to reduce the level of effort in creating the ProModel processing. Considerable use of subroutines in the simulation model is utilized for parametric decision-making that is repetitive. This presentation describes the modeling techniques used to accurately simulate the surface and underground operations. The surface and underground operations are considerably different, thus they will be treated in their own sections.

Designing optimal placer gold recovery plants requires a detailed knowledge of the size, shape and surface physical characteristics of the gold particles and the host alluvium in the pay gravel, sand or clay. Results of a recent pilot-scale study of the quantitative performance characteristics of riffled matted sluice systems are presented. For the appropriate non-coherent pay gravel-sand with medium-flat gold, simple sluices can recover gold at greater than 85% efficiency down to 100pm diameter. Alternatives to simple sluices are presented and discussed briefly.

The goal of Bethlehem's mining research program is to improve both the safety and productivity of our mines through the use of new equipment, new technology and new mining methods. Although we can all agree on the value of such goals, achieving them can be a costly, time-consuming and sometimes frustrating experience. However, the potential benefits of lower costs per ton and better safety in an increasingly more stringent and confusing regulatory environment make the expended effort worthwhile. At Bethlehem we feel that the mining companies are in the best position to determine the needs of the industry, and coal companies have the incentive as well as mine sites at their disposal for testing. Therefore, the mining industry should be leading the research effort

Since 1984, nitrogen-species catalyzed pressure leaching has been utilized at the Sunshine Mining and Refining Company for the recovery of precious metals from a refractory sulfide concentrate, The process operates without the use of cyanide. The plant is now the only industrial-scale commercial application of this technology. Since the inception of the process, changes have been implemented to improve efficiencies and throughputs. Two of these changes, the replacement of nitric acid by sodium nitrite and a concentrate regrind, have recently been implemented. This paper will discuss the outcomes of these recently patented plant-process changes. In particular, a comparison between the previously used method and the new leach method is made. Also discussed is the potential applicability of the process to other materials. A companion publication (Anderson, Harrison and Keys, 1996) indicates possible mechanisms responsible for the success of these process changes.

For several years iron ore processing plants, located in the northern U.S. experienced seasonal decreases in the grinding efficiency of their primary autogenous mills. Kawatra and Eisele (1992) studied this phenomenon in an operating plant and characterized it in terms of specific energy consumption (Fig. 1) and production of critical size material (Fig. 2). Critical size material is defined as ore that is too small to be effective grinding media and too large to be ground. This data showed that both specific energy consumption and critical size production increased during the winter months. The increased energy consumption was in part a result of an increase in the viscosity of the mill pulp at colder pulp temperatures. However, viscosity could not fully explain the changes in critical size production. These changes are most likely due to changes in the breakage characteristics of the ore. Other studies were also conducted to determine if thermal and physical properties of iron ore changed at colder temperatures. These are summarized below:

This paper presents the ventilation design for an underground testing facility in a salt medium. The under-ground workings consist of two 3.6 m-diam (12 ft-diam) watertight shafts and about 1830 m (6000 ft) of drifting. These facilities are designed to provide access for an in situ testing of a salt horizon in which a variety of hazardous and nonhazardous materials could be temporarily stored or permanently deposited. The ventilation system includes a design basis for gassy mine conditions and provides for the option of bulk air cooling and heating.

The vast coal resources of North Slope, Alaska, can be expected to attract substantial interest because the nearly flat-lying coal beds of the coastal plain are specially amenable to surface mining. Mining on a scale large enough to justify coal development in this area could have severe environmental effects. The mitigation would be uncertain because large-scale coal mining and reclamation operations have not been carried out in the arctic. The deficiency of the scientific data base is another factor that requires consideration if coal mining has to develop in accordance with the objectives of PL 95-87. The objective of this paper is to establish the inter-relationship between the problems due to permafrost and factors in reclamation of post-mining land in order to find ways to transform nature in a rational and purposeful manner and to suggest specific reclamation approaches that may be appropriate in this region.

The surface chemical sites on several fillers (quartz, feldspar, calcite and granite) were studied by the adsorption of well defined acid and basic probe molecules (benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol, ethyl benzoate, pyridine and benzyl amine) from cyclohexane. The results provided a wide variation of adsorption data, emphasizing the extensive range of site heterogeneity on the filler surfaces. In addition, it was shown that the acidic probes were strongly adsorbed on all of the minerals, thus indicating that the basic surface sites dominate the acidic ones. Also, through FTIR studies with vapor-phase probes adsorbed on orthoclase, it was possible to identify the nature of specific sites and the type of bonding occurring between the filler surface and the probe molecule. These types of surface analytical techniques could give useful information for predicting the adsorption functional groups on dispersants, dyes, thickeners, etc. and could lead to enhanced interfacial bonding between the filler and the matrix.

As part of a continuing study of diesel exhaust aerosol characteristics, the Bureau of Mines has applied Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) model source apportionment analysis to evaluate a size selective sampling method for determining the separate diesel exhaust and coal dust aerosol concentrations in a diesel equipped coal mine. Size selective sampling was used under the premise that diesel exhaust aerosol dominates the submicrometer aerosol size range, while most of the mineral dust aerosol is greater than 1 m. A micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) was used as the size selective sampling method. Concurrent samples of mine aerosol were collected using a dichotomous, respirable aerosol sampler. This sampler separated the fine and coarse size portions of its sample at 0.7 m. Trace element concentrations for in-mine aerosol sources and the dichotomous samples used by the CMB model were measured using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis. The CMB analysis, applied to both the fine and coarse fractions of the respirable mine aerosol, yielded the mass concentration contributed to each by diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol sources. The MOUDI size distribution data were analyzed using nonlinear regression to parameterize the fine and coarse fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each fraction from both coal dust and diesel aero- sol sources. For the diesel mine visited, analysis of the MOUDI samples yielded a value for the fraction of the fine aerosol attributable to coal dust of 15[]7% fine fraction coal from analysis of the MOUDI samples versus 25[]4% from the CMB analysis. The remainder of the fine aerosol in the mine was diesel exhaust aerosol. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for such sampling. After correcting for the presence of coal dust in the fine aerosol fraction, analysis of the MOUDI size distributions yielded estimates of respirable mineral and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations that were accurate to with-in 10% of values determined by the CMB apportionment.

Rapid growth and acceptance of engineered materials have changed the way we live. We have come to expect improved performance at less cost. At the same time, our awareness of societal and environmental issues created by these materials during and after their lifetime has been heightened. As a result, material lifecycle analysis is receiving considerable attention. Material lifecycle analysis evaluates the cost/effective tradeoffs at each stage of a material's life: feedstock, fabrication, performance, recycle, and disposal. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigates a material's lifecycle using technical cost models augmented with decision and impact analyses. Results of these studies are useful in gaining a better understanding of current material selections and illustrating the multifaceted issues associated with engineered materials in today's society.

Gravity concentration - the separation of minerals according to their relative density - is one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Even though modern technology has developed a range of other processes, gravity concentration remains as one of the most important methods employed for mineral separation. The range of minerals recovered covers a wide spectrum, from andelusite to zircon, from coal to diamond, from gold to industrial mineral. The long history of gravity concen¬tration, along with a still imperfect understanding of the various mechanisms involved has resulted in a series of ingenious engineers developing, some¬times perfecting and sometimes rejecting, a wide range of equipment, suited for a variety of different duties. 'Selection' in the context of gravity separation, is primarily the choice of the right type of equipment for the separation in hand; 'sizing' of the correctly chosen unit is, more often than not, determining the appropriate number of units required to suit the throughput. The accent of this chapter will, therefore be 'selection'. A brief description of the major types of gravity concentration equipment will follow a discussion of the factors which determine the selection of the correct unit. CLASSIFICATION OF GRAVITY CONCENTRATION EQUIPMENT All concentration equipment has a primary function and a secondary function. The primary function is the efficient separation of the constituent minerals into two or more discrete phases; the secondary function is to effectively cause the discharge of these discrete phases into separate compartments (Aplan 1975). For maximum efficiency of operation, the forces which effect the primary function should not also result in the secondary function occurring; in such cases optimum operating conditions required for the primary function, separation, may have to be compromised to ensure reasonably efficient operation of the secondary function, product discharge.
