It is often stated that innovation is central to the economic survival of mining and mineral processing in the face of global competition, and yet technology is often far from a core strategy in our industry - hence the concerns that are often voiced about the apparent slow rate at which new technology is applied. Much of the discussion stems from a lack of understanding of the role of technology in innovation, and of the role of R&D within the innovation process. To a large extent this has all been said, however, the messages are clear and deserve repetition. This paper expresses the personal views of the authors, based on experience in government-funded (CSIRO and universities) research, and in CRA Ltd, a large mining and mineral processing company. Further than this, it explains how our own development unit within the CRA Group has come to see its key roles as including the transfer of technology, and the training of technologists to move into the operating business units. We conclude that these critical tasks are the keys to creating the environment that will allow us to maximise the contribution of technology.

There are no particular nor unique features of iron mining that are not shared in some degree by all mining ventures everywhere. There are, however, at least three problems that have acquired a special emphasis from a unique cause. That cause is the embarrassment of riches under which the industry is suffering. The most obvious' feature of iron mining today is the copious abundance of usable ore and its almost universal distribution over the face of the earth. By the term "usable ore" is meant ore that is amenable to reduction by the usual and conventional processes. Amidst this plenty, three problems become acutely emphasized: 1. The geographic location that will provide a mine with the best market opportunity. 2. The size of the orebody that will be required to' return the preproduction investment. 3. The geometry and configuration of the orebody that will permit quality control measures to be effectively executed.

During the last years, using modular computer models on the software and distributed computer capacities on the hardware side has become quite common in the mining industry. When tackling real mining problems under the condition of heterogeneous systems, however, some problems become obvious: the incompatibility of the heterogeneous platforms in connection with the heterogeneously structured information and the necessity of interpreting the data. Knowledge based approaches are employed for solving different planning problems in the field of mining industry. The main problems here consist in the knowledge representation and data acquisition. Starting point of the investigation form classifications of mining planning problems and the corresponding models which can be transformed into information models for evaluation. With help of an expert system a practical solution is represented. Distributed systems with mobile computing and communication facilities for immediate access can be used as an additional support for planning and processing. On the base of public or private computer networks (including mobile networks) the foundation is given for a computer supported treatment of planning tasks. Additionally the use of teleworking scenarios in regions of mine planning and data collection in geological applications is prepared. Foundation forms a workflow system on an object-oriented distributed platform.

The electrostatic charge on spray droplets of ionic surfactant solutions and coal particles was measured and the results were correlated with the dust collection efficiency. When various surfactant were added, the magnitude of the droplet charge increased significantly and it was observed to be a function of surfactant type and concentration. The concentration of maximum droplet charge coincided with surfactant concentration where maximum collection efficiency was observed for these surfactants. Particles of coal also carried substantial amount of charge magnitude of which seemed to be a function of coal rank. Based on the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that ionic surfactant primarily act as a strong electrostatic charge inducer for droplets. Due to interactions between these highly charged droplets and naturally charged particles, the efficiency of droplet-particle collisions play a primary role when compared to the wetting and engulfment phenomenon which could only follow a successful collision. INTRODUCTION Water spray are widely used to suppress airborne dust in mine atmospheres (Walton and Woolcock, 1960; Kobrick, 1970; Hamilton, 1974; Jayaraman et al., 1986). Several investigators have considered the use of surfactants to enhance the effectiveness of water sprays especially for difficult to wet particles such as those of coal (Glanville and Wightman, 1979). The capture of dust particles by water droplets involves droplet-particle collisions, adhesion of particles to droplets, and engulfment of particles into droplets. Surfactants affect these sub processes through their influence on droplet charge, surface tension, and wetting. The last two mechanism have been thoroughly studied in recent years (Walker et al., 1952; Cohen and Rosen, 1981; Glenville and Haley, 1982; Chander et al., 1988; 1991). However, little attention has been paid to the role of electrical charge on particles and droplets on the collision and adhesion of spray droplets and dust particles. Airborne particles of dust have long been known to carry a significant amount of electrostatic charge (Hopper and Laby, 1941; Kunkel, 1948; Kunkel, 1950; Dodd, 1952; Liu et al., 1987; Kutsuwada and Nakamura, 1989). It is reasonable to assume that presence of charge on particles will effect their agglomeration and particle-droplet interactions. Polat et al., (1991) showed that virtually all freshly generated dust particles were agglomerated in air. They suggested that electrostatic charge and humidity were important factors responsible for agglomeration. Previous theoretical studies on the interactions between charged particles and collectors by Nielsen and Hill (1976) show that, the collision efficiency is a strong function of the particle charge. In addition to charge on particles, spray droplets might also carry substantial amount of charge (Chapman, 1937;1938; Blanchard, 1958; Iribarne and Mason, 1967; Jonas and Mason, 1968; Byrne, 1977; Bailey, 1988). In theoretical studies of interactions between a spherical collector and airborne particle, it was found that the collision efficiency was significantly altered depending on whether the collector and the particles were charged. If neither the collector nor the particles carried a charge, the collision occurred by inertial and gravitational forces. The collisions took place on the front part of the collector (the front capture). If either of the collector or the particles were charged, the collision was enhanced due to the induced image forces. If both the collector and the particles were charged, the collision efficiency was significantly affected by the sign of the charge as well as its magnitude. For oppositely charged collector-particle pairs a collision could take place on the rear of the collector even if the particle flied past the collector upon approach (the rear capture) (Nielsen and Hill, 1976; Wang et al., 1986; Chang et al., 1987). On the other hand, the columbic force became negligible as the particle size increased and the inertial force became dominant. The electrostatic attraction was predominant for particles of less than about 2.5 µm in diameter. For particles larger than about 8 µm the inertia of particles was sufficient to overcome the columbic force and inertial impaction became the dominant collision mechanism (Grover and Beard, 1975; Chang, 1987). Previous studies of dust suppression using charged spray droplets generated by applying high voltage to the spray nozzle showed significant improvements in collection efficiencies (USBM open file report, 1983; McCoy et al., 1985). The presence of elements, minerals, or chemical compounds in materials at very low concentrations is becoming a constantly increasing concern for several segments of the Industry. Some trace elements or chemical compounds may be considered as hazardous, some are simply considered as undesirable In complex processes where they could be constantly recycled and end up as the major factor of decreasing quality for some valuable products. In some other cases, the presence of a trace element or mineral may be highly desirable because of its economical value: precious metals are falling into this category, they probably were the first trace elements to draw our attention. Tremendous quantity of money is spent for analysis at the trace level, also the analytical "tool" has been considerably improved during recent years, but still the sampling aspect of the problem remains obscur for many, and because of it, large quantity of analytical efforts become meaningless. Not only the absence of sampling strategies is badly affecting the representativeness of a large majority of samples, but furthermore for the same reasons, many laboratories are failing In their endeavor to prepare reliable standard reference materials. The reason of this failure has its roots in the unability to estimate effectively the sampling characteristics of the element, mineral, or compound of interest, not to mention the unability to perform precise and accurate complete analysis, so essential for the instrumental analyst (1). In this paper a strategy to perform a better sampling operation is recommended. SELECTION OF A PROBABILISTIC APPROACH AS SOON AS PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE It Is essential to differentiate probabilistic sampling from non-probabilistic sampling. As Illustrated in Figure 1, the sampling operation Is a selection process which could be performed In two different ways: I. A probabilistic selection process according to which all elements of a lot of material to be sampled are submitted to the selection with a same probability of being selected. 2. A non-probabilistic selection process according to which all elements of a lot of material to be sampled are submitted to the selection with different probabilities of being selected.

This paper is a summary of the author's industrial experiences on the selection and optimization of flotation reagent schemes for the recovery of gold species. The trends given are a composite of data and experiences gained on 24 different gold ores from around the globe. The primary emphasis is on the benefits of matching the associated gold mineralogy to a reagent scheme most appropriate for that mineralogy. Two general categories are discussed: the flotation of free or native gold species and the flotation of gold associated with a variety of sulfide minerals. Important plant operating factors influencing each of these two categories are presented with supporting examples. Carefully matching reagent chemistry and appropriate operating conditions to any given gold-bearing ore will not only lower the total reagent cost but, more importantly, can lead to measurable increases in gold recovery.

Production scheduling is one of the most important factors affecting mine planning. A program -Mine Scheduler -that aids mining engineers with the setup of an optimum open pit production scheduling algorithm has been developed. A mathematical model for open pit scheduling that optimizes the Net Present Value of the cash flows was formulated. A simulated data is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. What's Best by Lindo Systems is used as the MILP solver in Microsoft Excel. The implementation of the algorithm focuses on problem setup, allowing users to easily evaluate, simplify, and develop the model that best fits their production scheduling.

As part of a joint project on fine particle processing, sponsored by the Consortium de Recherche Minérale (COREM), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Hydro-Quebec, two flotation plant circuits were sampled to identify and quantify the causes of mineral losses within several particle size ranges. Size distributions, size-by-size assays and global chemical assays (Cu, Zn, Fe, S) were determined for the major streams. Size distributions were measured in 13 classes by sieving, cyclo sizing (-45 µm), and laser beam diffraction analysis. BILMAT, a material balance computation software package, was used to optimise the sampling, to estimate the unmeasured variables, and to assess and improve the quality of the information generated. The methodology has been extended to correct cyclo sizer data and reduce discontinuities of up to 20% at the transition from sieves to cyclo sizer. The paper describes the methodology and the main conclusions emerging from material inventory of the flow sheets.

"In 2017, one of the international authorities on coal bursts, Dr. Chris Mark, published a paper entitled “Coal Bursts that Occur during Development: A Rock Mechanics Enigma,” in which several relevant technical issues were identified, the most pertinent being:i.whilst development coal bursts are commonly associated with geological faults, understanding which specific faults result in burst-prone development mining conditions and why, remains undefined.ii.conventional wisdom in relation to strong roof and floor geology of the coal seam might be limiting, based on certain burst examples in Colorado.iii. development coal bursts can occur without the local ground stresses being substantially elevated from their in situ levels.This paper outlines what is considered to be a credible, first-principles, mechanistic explanation for these three current development coal burst conundrums by reference to early published coal testing work examining the significance of a lack of “constraint” to coal stability and an understanding of how very specific structural geology and other geological features can logically cause this to occur in situ, albeit on a statistically very rare basis. This basic model is examined by reference to published information pertaining to the development coal-burst that occurred at the Austar Coal Mine in New South Wales, Australia, in 2014 and from the Sunnyside District in Utah, USA.The “cause and effect” model for development coal bursts presented also offers a meaningful explanation for the statistical improbability for what are nonetheless potentially highly-destructive events, being able to explain the statistical rarity being just as important to the credibility of the model as explaining the local conditions associated with burst events.The model could also form the basis for a robust, risk-based approach utilising a “hierarchy of controls” to the operational management of the development coal burst threat. Specifically, these include the use of pre-mining predictions for likely burst-prone and non-burst-prone areas, the use of the mine layout to avoid or at least minimise mining within burst-prone areas if appropriate, and finally the development of an operational Trigger Action Response Plan that reduces the likelihood of inadvertent roadway development into a burst-prone area without suitable safety controls already being in place."

The increase in productivity which has been achieved in mining during the past two decades has been attained largely through the replacement of manpower with electrical power. Power demands should continue to increase, requiring electrical distribution systems to be well planned to avoid inadequate voltage levels caused by underdesign and excessive costs resulting from overdesign. To aid the mining electrical engineer in designing proposed power systems or analyzing changes to existing systems, a digital computer program has been developed. This program will analyze alternating or direct-current networks with up to 10 voltage sources, 75 loads and 300 total segments. A maximum of nine levels of voltage is permitted in the system. This project was part of a package of programs developed at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (WI) for the mining industry under sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research. Included in this package are also programs to: 1. Schedule mine production and predict cost of mining 2. Simulate rail haulage systems 3. Simulate belt haulage systems 4. Analyze ventilation networks 5. Analyze pumping networks These programs are available from the Department of Mining Engineering, VPI, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 for a nominal processing cost.

So that you will not have been misled entirely we will devote our considerations to a far more important art and if I may, I should like to begin by quoting Vincent Van Gogh. According to a literal translation the artist in describing one of his famous paintings said "these peasants are eating their potatoes with those very hands that dug them from the earth' and put them in the dish". Vincent Van Gogh may not have realized at that time, that he could likewise have been describing what is probably one of the oldest of all arts - the art of Material Handling - an art that man with the aid of science has tried to improve since the beginning of time.

The U.S. Geological Survey has developed mathematical-modeling techniques to assess potential impacts on the hydrologic system resulting from mining of coal and oil shale in northwestern Colorado. Potential impacts of oil-shale mining on ground-water hydrology have been simulated using a quasi-three- dimensional finite-difference model. The model has been used to simulate hypothetical mine-dewatering operations at two proposed oil-shale mines. Dissolved-solids distribution and solute transport were simulated with a three- dimensional finite-difference model that was used to evaluate the effects of flooding in hypothetical abandoned mines. The potential impacts of coal and oil-shale mining on watersheds were investigated using a digital watershed model. This deterministic physical- process model predicts responses of the hydrologic system to modifications resulting from mining in basins having snow as the major source of runoff and recharge. Potential impacts of coal development on surface-water quality were investigated using a river-quality assessment model.

Various geological anomalies are encountered in underground longwall mines, and they cause stability problems. In this study, a number of detailed two-dimensional finite-element models were made, consisting of mine floor, roof, coal seam, shield structure, gob, etc. to analyze the influence of geological anomalies on longwall shields. Two different categories of anomalies were simulated. The first ones are shear zone and sandstone channels, with variable sizes and locations in the roof. The second category is fault or fracture plane, with variable friction factors, locations, and orientation of the fracture plane. The results of the analyses are' integrated with an artificial intelligence system for developing a forecasting guideline for prevention of underground hazards due to the existence of geological anomalies.

A placer ore jig, typically used to recover fine gold, tin and diamonds from alluvial ores, has been modified to remove fine pyrite from minus 6.4 mm (-114 inch) coal. In parallel tests, it proved to be far superior to two conventional coal jigs, the Baum and the Baum-feldspar, in removing fine pyrite from coal. The Pan-Am placer jig was found to remove essentially all of the +28 mesh pyrite and from 99% to 90%, decreasingly, in the 28 to 200 mesh range. This jig also showed a superior performance to the Baum-Type jigs in removing fine coal from its associated refuse. The superiority of the Pan-Am placer jig is related to the strong emphasis given on the suction stroke and, hence, on consolidation trickling, whereas the Baum jigs principally emphasize the pulsion stroke during jigging.

The use of clay-based granules as carriers for pesticides dates back to the early 1940s. It now represents a business conservatively estimated at between 180 and 270 kt/a (200,000 and 300,000 stpy) in the United States alone. Prices for these materials typically range from $110 to $165/t ($100 to $150/st). Aside from economic and specific target pest efficacy advantages, the use of clay granules as pesticide carriers also delivers a number of environmental benefits, which are reviewed. Topics discussed include drift control (vs. liquid sprays), mobility (in the environment), worker safety and transportation (spill) safety.

This paper deals with the various electro- and biochemical mechanisms involved in the bioleaching of multisulfide minerals such as those containing copper-lead-zinc and copper-nickel-iron. Galvanic series for sulfide minerals consisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pentlundite, and pyrrhotite in an acid bacterial leaching system is illustrated, and the role of relative electrochemical activity on selective dissolution is discussed. Typical leaching results are shown to illustrate the practical applicability of galvanic effects in bioleaching of multisulfides. Attachment of Thiobacillus fewooxidans onto chalcopyrite and sphalerite mineral substrates is illustrated through scanning electron micrographs. The role of high-metal-tolerant, specially adapted strains in the leaching of multimetal concentrates is also outlined.

The Department of Energy is presently sponsoring the development of automated miner-bolter machines in an effort to increase production and productivity in the continuous room-and-pillar mining sections. This study is concerned with the production potential of these machines in three different mine layouts. The Underground Material Handling Simulation (UGMHS) computer model was utilized in the study. The effect of variables such as bolt installation delay, shuttle car capacity, and equipment availability on production are analyzed.

A new method for the design of long- wall chain pillars, called Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), is described. The method provides estimates of the relative stability of different longwall pillar designs during all stages of their service life. The key issue addressed by ALPS is the magnitude and time-of-arrival of the longwall abutment loads applied to chain pillars. A field study was conducted and other available field data were analyzed in order to develop an approach for estimating the abutment loads. An example based on longwall experience in the Pittsburgh seam is used to illustrate how ALPS can be used in mine design.

Venezuela, once a world's top gold producer until 1886 Witwatersrand discovery, did let fall its role then because of a serious lack of infrastructure and population, and lately (since World war II times), because of discouraging mining and taxation laws, laying upon an oil prizes bonanza. Recent research leading to estimates of about 5.000 mt. of gold, mainly related to the greenstone belts of the Guiana Precambrian shield outcropping in Venezuela, are opening the scope for both Government and international investing and mining companies, for gold exploration and development projects in the country. This paper overviews Venezuelan Gold mining industry, as seen from the point of view of a participating mining company.
