This paper describes the results of a study of hydrometallurgical methods of producing sodium arsenate for the glass industry from arsenic oxide wastes occurring in carbon dioxide washing. This paper addresses the following aspects: theoretical assumptions for leaching arsenic and its oxides, experimental results of As(III) oxidation to As(V) in aqueous solutions, sodium arsenate crystallization (the system As2O5-Na2O-H2O), characteristics of the crystalline product, and pilot-plant tests using sodium arsenate in the glass industry.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from a high-extraction retreat room-and-pillar operation in southern Illinois. The objective of this monitoring program is to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a structure during a subsidence event. Data from such a study should enhance the understanding of the mechanisms that produce structural damage and aid in the design of structures that resist such damage. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tiltmeter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations caused by the mining subsidence sequence is demonstrated. Using data from this tiltmeter, the development of curvature in the foundations as they conformed to the displaced ground surface is shown. This curvature is rep- resented by differences in tilt at various points on the foundations, indicating a change in tilt over a horizontal distance. Also, even though subsidence damage has not been fully analyzed, preliminary observations of the cracks that formed in the foundations are reported. These cracks resulted in the separation of one footing into distinct pieces; therefore, their effect on the tilt readings is cited.

INTRODUCTION Main mine fan installations at underground coal mines must be designed to comply with the requirements outlined in 30 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 75. However, very little emphasis is typically placed on the aerodynamic optimization of shaft collar designs, ductwork configurations, and the selection of a fan isolation, or "closing door," system. Field testing has shown that poorly designed systems may produce large pressure losses between the shaft and fan inlet, as well as air turbulence problems which adversely impact fan efficiency and sometimes fan structural integrity. This paper analyzes each component of a surface exhaust fan system for an underground coal mine: • The shaft collar arrangement, • The 45 or 90-degree turning duct that isolates the fan motor from the return airstream, • Alternative ductwork arrangements for parallel fan installations, • The self-closing doors or dampers that are required for multiple fans, and • Horizontal and vertical evas6 arrangements on the discharge side of the fan. While discussion is limited to axial fan installations at shaft mines, most of the recommendations would also apply to centrifugal fan installations and to main mine fans for drift mines. FEDERAL REGULATIONS The mandatory safety standards for underground coal mines that apply to the installation of main mine fans are listed in 30 CFR Part 75.310. Stipulations which impact the design of the fan sys- tem arrangement are contained in paragraphs (a)(l), (a)(5), (a)(6),(d), and (1) of 75.31 0: • Each main mine fan shall be installed on the surface in an incombustible housing; • Each main mine fan shall be protected by weak walls or explosion doors in direct line with possible explosive forces; • Explosion doors or weak walls shall have a cross-sectional area at least equal to the area of the return air shaft or drift opening through which the pressure from an underground explosion would be relieved; • Each main mine fan shall be offset by at least 4.57 m (15 feet) from the nearest side of the mine or shaft opening; • Automatic closing doors shall be provided to prevent possible air reversals through the fans in mines ventilated by multiple main mine fans. The installation of main mine fans underground is prohibited by 30 CFR Part 75.310, (a)(l). Providing explosion doors or weak walls in line with a possible underground explosion and offsetting the fan 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the edge of the shaft preclude the installation of the fan directly over the shaft. In addition, 30 CFR Part 75.507-1 specifies that all electrical equipment used in return air courses be permissible, which requires locating the fan motor outside of the airstream exhausted through the fan. To comply with the Part 75.310 regulations, explosion doors are typically located directly over the shaft as part of the shaft cover or 'bonnet." A sufficiently long section of ductwork placed between the shaft enclosure and fan, equipped with a 45 or 90- degree turn, enables the fan to be offset at least 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the shaft and the motor to be isolated from the airstream. The need for the turn in the ductwork can be eliminated by driving the fan from the discharge side, instead of from the inlet side, and providing for a 90-degree bend in the evas6. For multiple main mine fan systems, self-closing doors can be located on the inlet or discharge side of the fan. FAN SYSTEM COMPONENTS A poorly designed exhaust fan arrangement will produce turbulent conditions at the fan inlet and significant pressure losses between the shaft and fan. Field tests have shown that pressure losses through inlet ductwork at some installations may constitute as much as 30 percent of the total mine head. Unfavorable flow conditions may cause a change in the operating point on the fan performance curve, resulting in reduced fan efficiency and pres- sure generation capability. In some instances, poor airflow distribution through the fan may create mechanical stresses that lead to fan blade or fan housing fatigue failures. The objective in designing an air duct arrangement for a fan system is to provide a low cost duct that will move the air from the shaft to the fan in a uniform air distribution and with minimum energy requirements. The optimum solution is a compromise between technical and economic factors. Aerodynamic design considerations for the shaft collar and cover, fan inlet ductwork for both single and parallel fans, self-closing doors, and evas6 are discussed in the sections below. Shaft Collar/Cover To prevent excessive turbulence and non-uniform air distribution through the fan, a smooth transition for the change in direction of airflow at the top of the shaft must be provided. However, the concrete lining of the shaft is abruptly terminated at the surface at many coal mine installations (see Figure I), creating a sharp 90-degree bend. The requirements for controlling air and stream pollution are a most timely subject for all concerned people. The coal industry has taken great measures to reduce both types of pollution. Through the use of more efficient scrubbing equipment on their thermal dryers, pollution has been considerably reduced. In many cases, the complete elimination of thermal drying by using centrifugal dryers to dewater fine coal products and meet customer specifications has completely eliminated air pollution from this source. To help eliminate stream pollution and the hazards created by tailing ponds, the coal industry is using centrifugal dewatering equipment. Use of centrifugals to dewater fine refuse for disposal would eliminate refuse ponds or extend their life. In doing this effectively and economically, preparation plants have the option of recycling the clarified water to close the water circuit or of discharging the water into receiving streams with the assurance that it contains an acceptable amount of refuse solids.

The economic value of calcium carbonate when used as an extender or filler basically falls into two categories: 1. Lessening the cost of the final product to which it is added. 2. Contributing desirable physicals to the final product. In most instances, a combination of these two may be achieved. The mineral limestone which is found in abundant quantities in many areas of the world is the source of 99% (+) of the calcium carbonate used as fillers and extenders. Precipitated, or chemically formed, calcium carbonate is also available, but by comparison, in very limited quantities.

A program has been written to combine the Klimpel-Austin approximate model for liberation in a binary system with a mill model applicable to ball milling. The model applies for a system where the volume fraction of valuable B in host matrix A is small. The mill model is treated as an equivalent series of fully-mixed reactors. Twenty-three classes of material are considered: pure A; pure B; unchanged AB; 0-10.2 B in AB either as surfac- exposed B or as wholly-contained grains of B; 10-20% B in AB, surface-exposed or wholly- contained;etc.. to 90-100% /b ub /ABm syrface-exposed or wholly-contained. Illustrative cases are given making reasonable assumptions concerning relative rates of breakage and primary breakage distribution functions for each class of material.

By-products from mining and processing plants and coal-fired power plants are being utilized more as valuable resources in Virginia. Mining-related by- products are divided into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation, and those generated from mineral processing or from industrial plants. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where by-products have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include coal- combustion products (fly ash and bottom ash), lime-kiln dust, flue-gas-desulfurization residue, rock fines, magnetite, Cold Spring clay (kaolin), Austinville tailings, soapstone rock, and calcium-carbonate paste. Some of these by-products have never been utilized, although several ideas have been investigated over the years.

From 1993 through 1999, Cyprus Amax Minerals successfully completed eight major construction projects around the world. Six greenfield mines were brought into production, an ongoing operation was completely modernized and an environmental issue was appropriately remediated. The projects stretched over three continents: from arctic Russia to the Atacama Desert, from sea level to an elevation of 4,900 m (16,00Oft), from city suburbs to remote wilderness and from a low of US$130 million to more than US$ 1billion. The operations included open-pit and underground mines, mill and leach facilities and involved gold, copper, molybdenum and coal. The diversity of these projects inspired Cyprus Amax to create a "best-practices” project-management protocol to steer corporate expansion in the new millennium. This paper summarizes these best practices, while highlighting the project-management pirfalls to avoid.

"Dust pollution is very serious in coal mining process, which is a great threat to the underground staff health and equipment and facilities safety. Coal seam water injection in mining process is an effective way to reduce coal mine dust concentration at the source. However, the effectiveness of water injection is limited in high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam. To improve the moisture content of coal seam, expand the wetting range and enhance the effect of dust reduction by water injection, the injectability and influencing factors of coal water injection are analyzed by numerical simulation method, and the sealing technology under high-pressure condition is studied. Then, according to the practical conditions of Tangkou coal mine, the parameters and process system of process system are designed, the effect of high-pressure water injection in coal seam was determined by testing water injection quantity, water increment and dust concentration. It is showed that the dust-removal rate of the high dust concentration operation such as falling coal and moving frame is 63.49% and 59.72%, the maximum dust-removal rate of multi-processes is 53%, which achieve a high level of application. The research results in this paper is of important theoretical and practical value to improve the water injection effect of high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam and improve the efficiency of dust removal in coal mining process.Introduction With the increasing of the depth and mechanization of coal mining, coal dust, the impact of ground pressure, ground temperature and other natural disasters continue to upgrade the harm degree (Wang 2011, Wu et al 2012), disaster incidents occur frequently, which seriouslythreaten the safe and efficient mining and the physical and mental health of underground staff. Coal seam water injection can effectively reduce the coal dust when coal crushing, prevent the impact of mine pressure, coal and gas outburst disasters, by increasing the thermal conductivity of coal, reduce coal temperature, and prevent spontaneous combustion of coal. In addition, coal seam water can soften the hard coal, so that speed up the recovery rate, improve coal production and efficiency (Wu et al 2008, Nie et al 2007). However, the coal seam in many mining area is with high-pressure and low-porosity feature, Coal joint cracks are not developed and relatively hard, water injection is difficult in these coal seams, then the desired disaster prevention effect cannot be achieved (Jin et al 2001, Zhao et al 2000). In this paper, the numerical simulation and field test methods are used to design the high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam water injection technology, so as to solve the difficult problem of coal dust control in high-pressure and low-porosity in deep well mining process."

A basic model has been developed to help assess methane control needs for longwall mining of coal in gassy areas. Rather than depending upon reservoir and rock mechanic theory, it uses an empirically-determined gas emission rate as an input and operates on the assumption that, within a specific region and zone, gas emissions will be relatively equivalent for uniform incremental volumes of gob created by mining. The computer program divides longwall panels into segments, keeps track of the face advance, and generates emission rates and volumes for both the entire panel and for individual zones within the panel by summing values for all undermined segments. This model can aid the determination of the number, size, and location of vertical wells or other methane control applications that are needed for gob gas control.

Limestone and Dolomite quarries located near Salto-De-Pirapora, Arroia Grande Gaucho, Conde Francisco and Candioita probably represent the closest, major sources of high quality lime and cement grade carbonate rocks to the major population center of Sao Paulo Brazil. The nearest major city to most of the limestone - dolomite sources is Sorocaba and Palma. All of the mining properties visited during this study are located in the state of Rio Grande Do Sul at approximately -32 degrees south latitude and -52 degrees west longitude, southwest of the major port city of Porto Alegre.

The quantum of coal fines below 6 mm in run-of-mine (ROM) coal has been increasing due to progressive mechanization of mining methods which has created a substantial incentive, worldwide, to develop suitable fine coal beneficiation techniques. The majority of the efforts have been directed toward reduction in ash/sulfur contents in clean coal. The beneficiation techniques may be broadly grouped as those based on specific gravity and surface property. The processes, which use heavy medium cyclone, water-only cyclone, concentrating tables, and spirals, belong to the former group while the latter group encompasses froth flotation, column flotation, oleo- flotation, and oil agglomeration. In almost all the gravity based techniques, it has been noted that a classification step prior to beneficiation is essential for effective treatment. In general, the effect of design and process variables on the performance of these units and also the quantification of the processes have been the main areas of research and development. In froth flotation, efforts throughout the world have been mainly to understand the effect of variables and to optimize the process. Quantification of the process has been attempted through kinetic studies and mathematical modeling. The efforts have led to the development of new reagents, machine designs, and flowsheets for a specified objective. The attempts so far with the column flotation and oleoflotation processes have indicated a great potential. Extensive R&D efforts are in progress to understand as well as to commercialize the processes. The efforts in the oil agglomeration process have been toward substantiating the inherent merits of the process by developing cheaper bridging liquids and technology to recover and reuse the oil to make the process commercially viable. Modeling of the process has also been attempted to predict the yield and size distribution of the agglomerates. This paper reviews and summarizes the recent developments in the science and technology of fine coal beneficiation processes. The current trends in R%D efforts for these processes are also highlighted.

Geostatistical estimation techniques were customized to enable forecast of production figures at the Silver Bell uranium mine (Uravan District). Surface drill hole data were used to provide a block model of kriged estimators of average uranium grades. The recoverable figures, such as ore-waste ratio and ore grade, are then deduced from regressive curves previously obtained from underground information and production data. Cross-validations of the entire model were performed and were found positive.

Reflected light microscopy was used to study the mineralogy and textures of experimental reactions of a nickel concentrate with a slag. Such an interaction is an important step in the bath smelting of nickel sulphide concentrate. Concentrate particles in the central portions of the pellets are rounded and develop vermicular S02 gas porosity. In the outer portions of the pellets, the original minerals of the concentrate, i.e., pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and violarite, have agglomerated and reacted to form two intergrown phases: pyrrhotite solid solution (FeO.75Ni0.18Cu0.01S) and pentlandite solid solution (Fe0.58Ni0.51Cu 0.03S). Magnetite formed euhedral crystals, skeletal crystals and dendrites at the margins of the matte. Prismatic, ferrohypersthene and octahedral Mg-Al-Fe spinet crystals and dendrites are present in the glassy slag. A slope stability study for the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines was undertaken to provide Wharf Resources, Inc. with a technical assessment of the stability of the slope for an overall pit slope angle of 60°. A rock analysis of the most critical and persistent combination of discontinuities was carried out using probabilistic methods. A detailed discontinuity mapping and assessment of the rock mass provided the orientation data used in this study. The orientation data were reduced and analyzed to identify the discontinuity sets. A statistical analysis provided information about the distribution of the data. A deterministic wedge stability analysis identified the critical combination of discontinuities; those with a low factor of safety were further studied using probabilistic kinematic and kinetic stability analyses. The results from this approach were used to obtain the reliability or probability of failure of the slopes.

ABSTRACT A comprehensive program of air flush core and reverse circulation drilling, trial mining and beneficiation test work was carried out in 1980-1982 to re-assess the potential of the Mitchell Plateau bauxite deposit. The results generally confirm previous work by Amax Corporation. The bauxite is a medium available alumina and reactive silica deposit which responds well to wet screen beneficiation. High grade pockets have developed locally, with the potential for refractory grade extraction. A major feasibility study of the Mitchell Plateau bauxite deposit was completed in 1983. Due to the unexpected severity of the downturn in the alumina market, development of the project has been deferred.

Mining of thin coal seams is both difficult and uneconomical. As a result, most of thin-seam coal reserves in the U. S. are not being mined. It is estimated that nearly 910 Gt (K. Unrug, 1985) of coal reserves exist in 355 to 710 mm thick seams. The Bureau is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm thick coal seams. This paper summarizes the research work on existing thin-seam mining techniques, testing on small and full scale physical models of the Bureau slot mining concept, and computer modeling of the full-scale process.

Bismuth, "the green metal," has become an important substitute for lead. The uranium industry was never really dead, anti-nuclear activists just wanted the world to think it was. And diamonds are fast becoming a miner's best friend. These commodities and others were discussed in May 1997 at the 47th Annual Minerals Processing Division meeting, held at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, CO. The meeting was put on by the SME Colorado subsection and was attended by about 115 people. In addition to the above three commodities, attendees learned more about the state of the copper industry, as well as lead and zinc and gold and silver. The program also included discussions of molybdenum, platinum and project financing. The following is a summary of some of the presentations.

In the, mathematical analysis of electrical networks, the electrical devices are often modeled using idealized network elements such as current sources, voltage sources and resistors. An analogous approach is outlined for the modeling of mine ventilation networks, which can be considered nonlinear resistive networks. The proposed modeling technique uses the following five basic (nonreducible) elements: H, Q, D, R and N. These elements are characterized by their pressure gain or loss, their air quantity and their pressure-vs. -quantity relationships, each of which may be known or unknown. In addition to the definition of the basic elements, the necessary conditions for which there exists a unique solution are discussed This is performed using theoretical developments derived from electrical circuit theory and illustrated in example networks. The proposed procedures are useful in the solution and characterization of mine-ventilation networks.

The design of solvent extraction plants has been generally based on the assumption of steady operating conditions in both the settler and the mixer units. However, recent experience in both large and small plants has shown this not to be the case. Mixer transients include start up aqueous locking and partial phase separation in secondary mixers, which both lead to reduced plant capacity or overflow of upstream mixers. Analysis of the hydraulic pressure profiles has generated new design methods to eliminate the effects of the partial or complete phase separation. Changes to the method of specification and selection of primary and secondary mixers have been made to eliminate the onset of partial separation during operation. The observation of settler operation has shown that it is also a dynamic process, even under "steady-state" conditions. Four transient phenomena have been identified that lead to internal circulating flows, poor disengagement of fine secondary haze and erratic and high entrainment levels in the discharges. A, first approximation analysis has shown that there are significant pressure differentials within settlers, and these change along the length and with the phase separation rates. A technique to control the effects of these transients was developed that allows plant performance to be improved beyond "standard" expectations.
