Two types of hydrothermal massive sulfide fields were discovered in the Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR) in the last twenty years. The first type associates with basalts and includes the TAG, Snakepit, Broken Spur, Lucky Strike and Krasnov hydrothermal fields. The second type is related to ultramafic rocks and represented by the Logatchev, Rainbow and Ashadze hydrothermal fields. In 2007 a new, probably, the largest cluster of hydrothermal massive sulfide field on the MAR (Fig. 1), related both to basaltic and ultramafic rocks, was discovered at 13°31'N of the MAR (Beltenev et al., 2007). Of the six forms of asbestos, only three have been used to any significant extent in commerce. These are chrysotile, crocidolite, and amosite. Between 1870 and 1980, approximately 100 million tonnes of asbestos was mined worldwide, of which more than 90 million tonnes was the chrysotile variety, about 2.7 million tonnes the crocidolite variety, and about 2.2 million tonnes the amosite variety. The three principal diseases related to asbestos exposure are (1) lung cancer, (2) cancer of the pleural and peritoneal membranes (mesothelioma), and (3) asbestosis, a condition in which the lung tissue becomes fibrous and thus loses its ability to function. These diseases, however, are not equally prevalent in the various groups of asbestos workers that have been studied: the amount and type of disease depend on the duration of exposure, the intensity of exposure, and particularly, the type or types of asbestos to which the individual has been exposed. Lung cancer is caused by exposure to chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos; however, increased risk of this disease is usually found only in those who also smoke. Asbestosis is caused by prolonged exposure to all forms of asbestos, whereas mesothelioma is principally caused by exposure to crocidolite asbestos. There is good evidence that chrysotile asbestos does not cause any significant amount of mesothelioma mortality, even after very heavy exposure. The common nonasbestiform amphibole minerals, cummingtonite, grunerite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite, which are often defined as "asbestos" for regulatory purposes, have not been shown to cause disease in miners. Chrysotile asbestos, which accounts for about 95 percent of the asbestos used in the United States, has been shown by extensive Canadian studies to be safe when exposures do not exceed 1 fiber per cm3 for the working lifetime. Chrysotile dust levels found in buildings rarely exceed 0.001 fibers per cm3. Such dust concentrations will have no measurable health effect on the building occupants. Present and future controls of minerals defined as "asbestos" and removal of asbestos from buildings and homes may cost many billions of dollars. Much of this expense is unnecessary and even counterproductive. Asbestos abatement could in fact produce a health risk to those exposed to dusts during and after removal operations overly restrictive controls could force the use of poor or dangerous substitutes, and could greatly affect the hard-rock mining industry.

The use of full face boring machines in underground mining has increased considerably in recent years and over 200 raise-boring machines are now in use in the Western World. Several tunnel-boring machines have been tested notably in America, West Germany, Britain and South Africa. A relatively new concept is the blindhole borer, where the machine stands on the lower level and bores a full diameter raise upwards without the use of a pilot hole. Four of these machines have been tested to date in South African quartzites with varying degrees of success. The development of boring technology has created new problems for ventilation engineers and exacerbated several existing ones. This challenge has been met in many varying ways and this paper attempts to provide a review of the current state of the art. Technology and methods are developing at great speed in this field and therefore no final and absolute solutions can be proposed, since each machine and site pose individual problems which are best handled by local knowledge and experience.

Intensive coal cleaning usually necessitates fine grinding of the feed in order to liberate inorganic constituents from the surrounding organic matrix. This however adversely affects the ability of flotation techniques to beneficiate coal. Such difficulties are mainly attributed to the increase of particle population density, the decrease in capture efficiency, and the greater tendency of inorganic components to report with the froth. A three-pronged approach was adopted in an attempt to overcome these difficulties. The aggregative flotation technique was used to reduce particle population densities and improve capture, while unconventional spargers were used to generate a wide range of bubble sizes. Use of unagitated flotation columns allowed for the maintenance of countercurrent flows in both the recovery and washing sections. The combined effect of these parameters enabled the recovery of 92% of the carbon content of coal having an average particle size of 20.5 µ m, while rejecting 85% of the ash. This was accomplished using 2 kg of fuel oil per tonne of coal in a column 2 meters high operating at 2-3 tph/m3, a capacity which compares favourably with conventional cells.

The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role and the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Estimates of an electrical double layer attractive energy between the bubble and the solid particle are made.

In December 1988 Phelps dodge corporation brought an underground gold mine into production in the republic of Botswana. The mineralization is associated with steeply dipping shear zones in Archean greenstones of the Tati Schist Belt. The gold is intimately associated with sulfides and is refractory in nature. The deposit is being exploited by underhand open stoping methods. Vertical and inclined shafts are used to hoist the ore to surface where it is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation, followed by fluid bed roasting with CIP elution and carbon regeneration. Adjacent deposits are being explored with a view to increasing production. Legal and taxation aspects of operating in Botswana are discussed.

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.

Instrumentation and observation of real mine structures helped define the pressure arch at White Pine, a large copper mine in sedimentary rocks. The pressure arch, which is attributed to inherent horizontal stresses, is used in the design of mine openings.

Budgets are key financial and behavior drivers for most businesses, including mining. Budgets are used to link strategic objectives to tactical decisions, to measure performance, and to provide basic financial planning. More accurate and pertinent budgets should result in improved strategic decision making and performance measures. This paper discusses how a process based production and cost database, based on activity based costing models and the one year production plan, can be used to create the annual budget for an operating mine as an Activity Based Budget (ABB). A case study is used to compare budgets derived from traditional methods and an ABB approach. It is evident that the ABB method is more accurate.

Cohesive clay soil poses a significant risk to earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines (EPBM) due to unstable face pressure, clogging potential, high cutterhead torque, poor muck flow, low advance rate, etc. This paper details the performance measures desired when EPBM tunneling in clay soil, and the scientifically-supported conditioning methods to transform in-situ clay to a muck with such characteristics, giving particular attention to ground conditions. The paper then examines TBM data from multiple clay soil projects in the context of these performance measures to demonstrate the influence of cohesive soil conditioning on EPBM performance.

Practical, effective solutions for the more serious common problems are described, along with some recommendations on design practice for specifying, selecting, and installing large screens.

Arch Mineral's Captain Mine has used the Bucket Wheel Excavator System(BWE) for over 3 years in conjunction with a 180 yd3 (138M3) stripping shovel. The bucket wheels prestrip the soft overburden ahead of the shovel. This soft overburden is brought to the spoil side through a series of shiftable conveyors and placed by a spreader over the ungraded or partially graded shovel spoils. The placement of the soft overburden and top soil is accomplished in a manner that meets the reclamation mandates. The prestripping by the BWE has reduced the incidence of the highwall and spoil slides, depth the stripping shovel has to dig and the volume handled by the pullback draglines.

The mining industry has recognized the importance of engineering controls as a primary means of preventing hearing loss. The noise control treatments most commonly observed on drills and bolters during this study were windshields, sound absorbing material, and hydraulic motor covers. These controls were evaluated on machines at underground metal mines to determine the amount of noise reduction achieved by each control. The results indicate that absorbing material has very little effect on the noise level. The noise reduction attributable to the motor covers was dependent on the material used to create the cover. Properly installed windshields were the most consistent control.

"The air flow problems in open pit mines are complex. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models provide a detailed knowledge of the airflow pattern and velocity distribution, temperature, and pollutant concentration within an enclosed domain of the open pit. A range of turbulent model can be selected for varying complexity and accuracy. Pollutant transport models, however, differ in their assumptions and structure as well as in the algorithm they use; as a result, prediction varies from model to model. This paper presents a study of pollutant transport in an actual open pit mine under stable boundary layer. The objective is mainly to test two turbulence models using the same input conditions, model constants, and similar geometry. Measured data are used to compare results of the two CFD models, namely, the kappa-epsilon (?-e) model and the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model. Despite the complex synoptic situations, different meteorological input data and the fast changing conditions, the simulation results from both the models are in good agreement regarding the dispersion of pollutants.INTRODUCTION Modeling of contaminant transport under Arctic air inversion is an important step for an assessment of the amount of pollutants within the open pit. The Airflow in open pit mines is of larger scale and does not follow the principles of pipe flow. The air flow problems in actual open pit mines are thus far more complex. CFD models provide a detailed knowledge of the airflow pattern and air velocity distribution, temperature, and pollutant concentration within an enclosed domain of an open pit. There is no known application of CFD in three-dimensional modeling of air flow in large open pit mines. Two equation RANS kappa-epsilon (?-e) and Large Eddy Simulation (CFD) models, however, have been developed to solve the stable boundary layer (SBL) problems in Atmospheric Sciences (Baklanov 2000, Basu and Porté-Agel 2006, Dop and Axelsen 2007, Bandopadhyay et al. 2014). Because an exact flow situation in open pit mines is not known a-priori, it is therefore, necessary to investigate various turbulent models to identify the appropriate model that would simulate the flow phenomena with reasonable accuracy, and predict the contaminant distributions within the pit. Dispersion models differ in their assumptions and structures as well as in the algorithm they use and, as a result, predictions vary from model to model. Furthermore, it is also important to investigate the behavior of a CFD model in simulating a complex phenomenon such as the transport and distribution of contaminants in open pit mine under Arctic air inversion. The simulation of an enhanced period of turbulence in SBL is of particular interest because traditional air pollution dispersion models cannot explicitly treat such intermittent events, and yet the SBL is often the worst-case scenario in an open pit pollution transport"

This paper deals primarily with roof bolting in Kentucky coal mines from January 1, 1949, through December 31, 1954, a six year period. The Consolidation Coal Co? (Ky.), a division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., began systemmatic roof bolting in November 1948 in Mine #204, Elkhorn #3 Seam, at Jenkins, Kentucky, After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proven by the Consolidation Coal Co., this procedure was adopted by other companies throughout the state. In December 1954, approximately 46.4 percent of Kentucky's total production of coal from underground mines was obtained from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the progress made in roof bolting during the six years, in addition to the roof bolting being done as of December 31, 1955. Significant progress has been made in the coal mines of Kentucky in reducing the roof-fall fatality, rates, during the past several years by adopting systemmatic roof bolting. The ground work by the Consolidation Coal Co, (Ky.) in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead. Cc, in its Southeastern Missouri Mines and The Tennessee Coal and Iron Division of the United States Steel Corporation. A finite-element algorithm was developed for an axisymmetric heat-transfer problem involving phase change. The finite-element treatment of the phase-change problem was dealt with by using the enthalpy method. The finite-element algorithm was subsequently applied to model the heat exchange between mine ventilation air and frozen ground in the presence of roof bolts in an underground mine with permafrost. This paper analyzes a single bolt in the problem domain with the convection boundaries at the roof level of the mine airway. A short-term study, comprising the evaluation of roof bolting (friction-anchored type), was conducted, and recommendations were made regarding the applicability of roof bolts as a support system for a given thermal condition.

An improved understanding of the significant role of electrochemical reactions in sulfide flotation has evolved in the past 20 years, This understanding has been accompanied by a corresponding increase in attempts to control the electrochemical potential of flotation pulps for monitoring and controlling sulfide flotation circuits to improve metallurgical performance. This paper discusses the basic electrochemistry of sulfide flotation and the use of electrochemical potential as a control parameter.

This literature review discusses the role of the Albanian institutions, the natural resources industry, potential investors and stakeholders in order to provide a set of indicators that can help to monitor amelioration within sustainable development principles. A map with the potential prospects of the natural resources will be a first step in identifying the further potential for exploitation. Mineral resource policies and governance, sustainable processing and supply chain as well as environmental management information system are some of the crucial tools identified, that will help to set up the indicators and quantify the achievements in environmental management in Albania. Moreover, the integration of practices that will support institutional capacity building; follow-up practices; the mainstreaming of global environment into planning; and the compliance monitoring process will additionally improve the environmental situation in Albania. Aligning business strategy with environmental policy, socio-economic analysis, environmental auditing are decisive tools in order to provide the Albanian authorities with a clear overview of the economic costs and the social benefits for sustainable development.

Cobalt, nickel and manganese can be recovered quickly, cleanly and selectively from cobalt-rich manganese ocean crust by leaching in dilute acid solutions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Common selective precipitation methods can then be used to recover these metals from the leach liquor. The leaching reaction produces only oxygen as a byproduct, and the waste residue from leaching was tested and found to be nonhazardous under existing EPA specifications. The leaching process is effective in either fresh water or seawater. This research is a part of the Bureau of Mines program to identify the mineral resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone and devise methods, for recovering their valuable components.

The Saskatchewan industry has the advantages of an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere else in the world, and large, efficient mines with production costs that compare favourably with those in other countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets, and producers face a distribution challenge to reach the offshore markets which is the main focus of this presentation. One of the characteristics of the world potash business is that all of the major sources of production are located in the developed areas of the world, while there is no significant production in any of the highly populated developing countries. The major potash producers are located in Canada and the United States, in West Germany, France, Spain and the U.K., in Russia and East Germany, and in Israel and Jordan. There is currently no significant production in any of the countries in Asia (with the exception of Jordan where a plant is currently in the start-up phase), Africa, Latin America or Oceania, and all of these areas must, therefore, import a11 of their potash requirements from the producing countries.
