This is an introductory paper on a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits which has been developed by Scintrex Limited. The method, which we call Luminex, for luminescent mineral exploration, is based on time- resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultraviolet light source. It has the ability to detect and resolve a group of key minerals which are either ore minerals themselves, or more often, are accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. Fortunately, these minerals are commonly found at the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits which are remotely detectable from the air to include those such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold and bedded lead-zinc deposits and, is therefore, a natural supplement to our three classical methods of airborne geophysics.

PRINCIPLES OF MAGNETIC SEPARATION The application of magnetic separators relies on the different behavior of individual mineral particles under the influence of magnetic forces. When exposed to a magnetic field, all materials are affected in some way. According to whether materials are attracted or repelled by the magnetic field, they are designated paramagnetic or diamagnetic, respectively. Paramagnetic materials are attracted along lines of magnetic force from points of lower magnetic field intensity to points of higher magnetic field intensity. The very strong response of some materials to a magnetic field is sometimes designated ferromagnetic and the particles attracted frequently retain magnetic properties after the applied magnetic field is removed. Diamagnetic materials are repelled along the lines of magnetic force from points of high magnetic intensity to points of lower field intensity. Only limited commercial use of diamagnetic effects has been made. For practical applications, the paramagnetic groupings are: 1. Strongly magnetic (ferromagnetic) 2. Magnetic 3. Weakly Magnetic 4. Non-magnetic The limits of these groupings are not well defined and will vary in some mineral species. Only a few minerals are ferromagnetic (magnetite is an example) and arbitrarily some investigators have selected 10,000 gauss, or 1 Telsa, as the dividing line between low and high intensity magnetic fields. I. S. Wells has developed a table indicating the magnetic intensity required to separate a selected grouping of minerals which is shown in Table 1 on page 2. A similar table has been developed by Carpco Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida in conjunction with the use of its high tension separators. This table, Table 2 on page 3 shows other minerals grouped in the broader categories cited above. Magnetic separation methods are used either to separate valuable minerals from nonmagnetic waste or magnetic impurities or other valuable magnetic minerals from bulk nonmagnetic values. After World War I the character of my mining life changed completely. Before then adventure had been almost continuous but after the war there was lots of staying in one place, almost routine, between adventures. This was fortunate, as the life of a mining engineer is a wandering one at best, and it makes being married and raising a family a dubious enterprise. It would have been quite out of the question with the life I led before I got married at the end of the war The new sort of life made the "beaconing of adventure" intermittent. There were often long stays at home between wanderings which was fortunate as it changed the continuity of these memories. I must briefly summarize accounts of the more or less routine periods and concentrate on the occasional exciting episodes between. After a long visit with friends in Berkeley, Dorothy and I left for Arizona and three days at the Grand Canyon that were nearly too much for both of us. One beautiful day we started a short walk down the Bright Angel Trail. It was such a lovely bracing day that we kept on walking and enjoying the views until, just after noon, we reached the Colorado River. We were the only ones in sight so to enjoy the sunshine to the full we both had a good swim in the swiftly flowing river. So far, everything was wonderful. But when we started to climb back up the trail, rising nearly 6000 ft in ten miles we soon found that we had counted too much on our youth and endurance. We had to rest every few hundred feet and it seemed as though we would never reach the top. It was eight o'clock in the evening when we finally staggered into our room and collapsed. On the way to the Canyon I had seen John Greenway and Dr. Ricketts in Santa Barbara and they had little idea what would happen to them or to me. Before resuming his position as general manager of Calumet and Arizona and New Cornelia, Greenway must recover from the effects of the gas he had suffered in the war. Dr. Ricketts

The operation of a modern coal preparation plant, particularly in western Canada, is a very complex task. Most western Canadian operations are processing two or more, sometimes up to ten, different seams through the same plant. This requires a sophisticated multi-circuit plant that needs close operational control. Add the soft nature and large amounts of natural fines of western Canadian coal and you have a formidable cleaning task. To assist in the operation, programmable controllers and sophisticated control concepts are being more widely used. Two of the newest coal preparation plants in Canada have been designed by Raymond Kaiser Engineers Inc. and its Canadian subsidiary, Phillips Barratt Kaiser Engineering, Ltd. The use of programmable controllers and control systems will be illustrated by showing their application in a "typical" western Canadian coal plant. This example will cover flowsheet design, control concept systems application, and possible future uses.

The advantages of producing a fine mill feed have been recognized for many years. The extent to which fine crushing can be carried out will vary and depends on the ore characteristics, plant and crusher design. Unfortunately, the ore characteristics are generally beyond our control, so the concentration of effort lies primarily on the plant arrangement, equipment design and operation Where fine crushing should stop and grinding begin is controversial and is influenced greatly by personal opinions and experiences. Often, this break point will be different if consideration is being given to a new plant in comparison to a modest expansion. Most new plant designs employ the largest and most efficient equipment. The modification of existing plants becomes more complex because of the space requirements and the related equipment already in operation. Fine crushing is, of course, a relative term. Obtaining a final crusher product of minus 3/4" is commonplace today and can occasionally be obtained in an open circuit final crushing stage.

Underground coal mining practice often requires that some coal be left in place at the seam boundaries after mining, for purposes of ground control, quality control, machine guidance, or good operating practice. Many methods for measuring the thickness of boundary coal have been developed, but only the natural % R gamma background method as bee used in routine operations. Use of this method is constrained by the level and consistency of the natural gamma background in the bordering strata, the accuracy of the gamma detection instrument, and the elevation profile of the seam boundary being detected. Computer simulations for three commercially available gamma detection instruments, designed for mine use, showed that measurement of boundary coal thickness by the natural gamma method can provide satisfactory input for horizon control systems when the gamma detector is large, when the sensor is mounted on the mining machine, and when the elevation profile of the seam boundary does not change rapidly in the direction of advance.

The term bentonite was first proposed in 1898 by Knight, a year after he had named this clay taylorite, because taylorite had been previously used for another mineral. The name taylorite was after the Taylor ranch, the site of the first mine, near Rock River, WY, and the name bentonite is from the Benton Shale in which the clay was thought at that time to occur. The Benton Shale was, in turn, named after Fort Benton, MT, located more than 640 km miles north of Rock River. Early in the 20th century, several geologists recognized that bentonite, mainly in beds in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks, originated from transported volcanic materials. This recognition led to definitions based on origin, the one most widely quoted and generally accepted by geologists is the following definition by Ross and Shannon (1926): "Bentonite is a rock composed essentially of a crystalline clay-like mineral formed by devitrification and the accompanying chemical alteration of a glassy igneous material, usually a tuff or volcanic ash; and it often contains variable proportions of accessory crystal grains that were originally phenocrysts in the volcanic glass. These are feldspar (commonly orthoclase and oligoclase), biotite, quartz, pyroxenes, zircon, and various other minerals typical of volcanic rocks. The characteristic clay-like mineral has a micaceous habit and facile cleavage, high birefringence and a texture inherited from volcanic tuff or ash, and it is usually the mineral montmorillonite, but less often beidellite." The difficulty in applying the foregoing definition to bentonite as an industrial mineral commodity is that it is based on origin and is restricted to an ash, tuff, or volcanic glass parent material. Therefore, deposits consisting of the clay minerals required by this definition, but having uncertain origin or parent materials, cannot properly be called bentonite. Furthermore, many deposits in the western United States and in other countries that have formed from rocks other than the types required by the definition are being mined and sold as bentonite. Perhaps the best definition of bentonite as an industrial mineral is one given by R.E. Grim in a plenary lecture at the International Clay Conference (AIPEA) at Madrid, Spain, June 27, 1972. According to this redefinition, which will be used in this chapter, bentonite is a clay consisting essentially of smectite minerals (montmorillonite group of some usages), regardless of origin or occurrence. This definition solves the problem of the difference between the geologic and industrial usages of the term and overcomes the difficulty in assigning a name to smectite clay that formed from igneous rock other than ash, tuff, or glass, or those of sedimentary or uncertain origin. However, bentonite, when used with this meaning is still a rock term (consisting of more than one mineral), and it will not be possible to distinguish it from fuller's earth in many instances. One way of classifying bentonite is based on its swelling capacities when wet or added to water. Bentonite having sodium (Na+) as either the dominant or as an abundant exchangeable ion typically has very high swelling capacities and forms gel-like masses when added to water. Bentonite in which exchangeable calcium (Ca++) is more abundant than other ions has much lower swelling capacities than sodium varieties. Some calcium types swell little more than common clay, and most crumble into granular masses in water. Intermediate calcium-sodium bentonites, the so called mixed types, tend to swell moderately and to form gels of lesser volumes than equal masses of the sodium type bentonite. Because of the general relationship of swelling and exchangeable ion characteristics bentonite is commonly divided into the high swelling or sodium, low swelling or calcium, and moderate swelling or intermediate types. The term sub-bentonite (Davis et a]., 1940) is used inconsistently in industry for the low or moderate swelling varieties. The authors believe the use of this term should be discouraged because of its implication of low quality or low value and the lack of a mineralogical or use basis for it. In the United States bentonite is also classified by geographic location and the uses for which it is sold. Inasmuch as most of the low swelling calcium type occurs in states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, this variety is commonly called Southern bentonite. The largest high swelling sodium bentonite deposits and the major producing districts are in Wyoming and adjacent states. Therefore, this bentonite is commonly called the Wyoming or Western type. Such terms as drilling mud bentonite, foundry bond bentonite, and taconite bond bentonite relating directly to use are applied in marketing. Other terms including high and low yield bentonite, high and low gel bentonite, and high and low strength bentonite are also used to distinguish different grades. The varied classifications notwithstanding, bentonite occurs in so many different varieties that some cannot logically be classified according to any of the foregoing groupings. One of these types is hectorite, which is a high swelling lithium-bearing variety of smectite occurring mainly in California and adjacent states. It is, therefore, not a Wyoming type, and it occurs even farther west than the so called western bentonites. Others are bentonites having magnesium (Mg++) or hydrogen (H+) as the most abundant or dominant exchangeable ion. These types are neither sodium nor calcium varieties, and apparently some are low swelling, whereas others have rather high swelling capacities. In a recent National survey, Seattle topped the list for having the worst daily traffic congestion. To address this problem, Sound Transit is planning to build 40km (24 miles) of light rail, including ten kilometers (six miles) of twin tunnels with four subway stations 40 m (130 ft.) to 65 m (210 ft.) deep. The overall schedule is very aggressive and Sound Transit is preparing four separate heavy civil construction contracts for simultaneous underground construction. Three of these contracts are being considered for design-build. Final design will start in March2000 and all underground construction must be completed by the end of 2005.

Windborne dust from alkaline salt flats and mining-related tailings ponds is especially prone to threaten applicable ambient air quality standards. Sodium carbonate crystals, typically present, weather to an exceedingly fine, non-cohesive dust, causing air quality problems for miles downwind. Recently developed specialized polymers react with alkaline dust to form sturdy, wind-resistant crusts with good longevity. An on-going demonstration project at a major trona facility has developed techniques for cost-effective application of these polymers over large areas of soft tailings or sediments in a wide variety of situations. Recently treated areas on the order of 80 acres show effective suppression of dust.

Diesel powered underground mining equipment is presently the most productive, safest and efficient equipment used in underground mining operations. The widespread application of this equipment to underground mining is restricted, however, largely because of the difficulty of controlling the diesel engine exhaust emissions. This paper briefly examines control devices currently available for underground application, and also discusses the theory and mechanics of controlling diesel missions with particulate traps and filters.

It is well known in both the research field and in commercial flotation processes that the grades and recoveries obtained from flotation plants are heavily influenced by the structure and height of the froths produced in the flotation cells. The development of steady-state mathematical models of flotation processes based upon practical and readily obtained parameters have demanded detailed information about the structure of flotation froths. The important parameters are the distribution of floating values, gangue and water in the froth with respect to froth height, cell pulp density, cell air flow rates and flotation inducing additives. Little work has been conducted in this field although considerable attention has been paid to bubble loading and other factors close to the cell froth/pulp interface. Laboratory batch tests are prefaced for the derivation of the above mentioned parameters for both practical and economic reasons. The standard laboratory flotation tests using a batch cell produces a froth of low height (1 to 3 cms generally) together with a varying cell pulp density as the test progresses due to the addition of top up water and the removal of froth from the cell. This form of test can be considered only as giving information about froth conditions close to the cell froth/pulp interface under conditions of widely varying cell pulp densities. In commercial processes the froth heights are much larger (frequently greater than 10 cms); therefore the laboratory batch test, although useful in many ways, does not directly yield parameters relating the state of the froth flowing over the cell lip to process operating conditions. To investigate flotation conditions, where more realistic froth heights are developed, an equilibrium type of batch cell has been developed at Warren Spring 1 Laboratory . Federally owned mineral deposits generally fall into one of three categories: (1) minerals locatable under the General Mining Law of 1872; (2) minerals leasable under the Mineral Leasing kt of 1920; and (3) minerals salable under the Materials Act of 1947. Unlike valuable deposits of gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, etc., which may be locatable, industrial minerals are acquired through a variety of methods depending on use, composition, and date of acquisition. Table 1 may be used to establish the method of acquisition for most industrial minerals.

Conveyors constitute a critical artery, essential to the successful operation of most ore processing plants. Technological progress is permitting the recovery of metal from low grade ores which previously could not be worked economically. Significant in this progress are improved material handling techniques highlighted by the frequent and successful application of conveyors. From the standpoint of the plant manager the successful conveyors are those he never hears about. They continue to economically transport the loads applied to them, requiring only routine maintenance attention. When such conveyors are subjected to closer scrutiny you will find that they have been carefully selected and engineered to perform the required function under the anticipated conditions. Among the primary elements in a conveyor drive are the electrical motor and the speed reducer. The selection of these elements can be aided by the systematic consideration of several factors. These factors which focus attention on the critical operating conditions, will be individually evaluated and their effect upon the selection of the electrical drive system and speed reducer analyzed.

Most copper mines produce both ore and low-grade "leach" rock or acid waters that contain recoverable copper. The sulfide ores pre¬dominate, and a portion that is too low grade for milling to produce concentrates for smelting, but has to be mined and trucked away anyhow, may be leached successfully with acid in dumps. Most of this leach material consists of sulfides and silicates or carbonates, and if the gangue is such that it consumes a high quantity of acid, this factor may rule out a leach operation. There are also valuable deposits that contain mostly acid-soluble copper, or occasional sulfide ores from which a sulfide concentrate can be roasted and acid-leached to produce a copper-bearing solution. Finally, there are milling ores in which the lesser part of the copper is acid-soluble and can be precipitated with iron or synthetic inorganic precipitants that produce metallic copper or copper sulfides that will float with the sulfides. Ordinarily, ores that contain copper associated with the sulfur ion, such as in the minerals chalcopyrite, chalcocite, bornite (and others), are milled to produce a 25-30% Cu concentrate for smelting, while a lesser amount of acid-soluble copper may be converted from solution to cement copper on iron scrap. A fast-growing percentage of such copper, however, is removed from solution with exchange resins or organic compounds in organic carriers such as kerosene (solvent extraction), then eluted with strong acid and subjected to electrolytic precipitation either in marketable form or as anodes that can be refined further. From the point of view of conventional copper smelting, copper flotation concentrates and cement copper are of chief interest in this chapter. Table I is a condensed open schedule for concentrates that generally run between 25 and 35% copper, and much less frequently as low as 12-15% or as high as 65-75% copper, the former being due to intimate relationship with pyrite (like the former United Verde Extension), and the latter representing such ores as the Bolivian Coro¬coro ore in which the copper is in the form of chalcocite in sandstone. These extremes are no longer common. When they occur, a special purchase schedule has to be negotiated. Included in Table 1, copper precipitates (cement copper) generally run from 70-85%a copper, and the same basic purchase schedule is used as with flotation concentrates. Sulfide Flotation Concentrates The sulfide copper concentrate produced in the mill as a flotation froth, with water then added for transportation of the heavy mineral particles from the flotation cells to thickeners, may run 60-80% water by weight, and the removal of water down to 25-50% by weight by means of thickeners, followed by further dewatering by continuous vacuum filters to 7-18% moisture by weight (depending on size of solids by screen analysis and also by content of clay) is a critical operation. Mill operators would like to produce a filter cake with 7-9% moisture content, but even with the help of steam on the filter this desirable condition is seldom realized when the concentrate is as fine as 80% -325 mesh. More commonly, the final concentrate is reground in pro- to produce best copper recovery and grade of concentrate (or molybdenite separation). In those cases, increasingly frequent, the filter product may not be a cake at all, but a mud that is hard to handle-even requiring a thermal dryer. Greater difficulty of form¬ing a manageable cake often comes from the copper-molybdenum separation by flotation, because the alkaline sulfides and hydrosulfides, or cyanide, or other similar reagents used for the separation, may leave the now relatively molybdenite-free copper concentrate even more difficult to filter. Handling a wet filter cake is difficult enough when its destination is only a short distance away-a matter of yards rather than miles. In those cases the filter cake may be thermally dried near the point of production, using rotary or multiple hearth, or fluidized-bed dryers. Alternatively, the concentrate may be pumped or carried in slurry form to the smelter and filtered there, or it may be spray-dried and compacted. For transportation to a smelter just a few miles to a few thousand miles away by ship or railroad other factors may be important, such as: in shipping by sea, avoidance of spontaneous combustion; in shipping by rail, losses by leakage if too wet or by wind and sun if too dry. It is the responsibility of the millman-usually the mill superinten¬dent-to make sure that his concentrates are in satisfactory condition when they leave the mill so that they meet these requirements: 1) They must have been accurately sampled and dry-weighed, the latter meaning that a moisture determination and gross weight must have been taken. 2) They must be dried sufficiently when necessary to prepare them for safe transportation. 3) They must arrive at the smelter with reasonable likelihood that they can be check-weighed and sampled fairly and equitably,

The systems optimization approach to mine planning has led to the adoption of a number of mathematical and computer models for short, medium and long range planning of mining operations. In the realm of open pit mine planning, the most common uses of such an approach have been in the areas of optimal pit design and planning of materials handling operations. Since a truck-shovel combination is the most widely used method of materials handling in open pit mines, a number of models have been presented in the past to analyze and optimize such systems. Broadly, these models can be divided into two categories. The simulation model, which is primarily used as an aid in analyzing the performance of either an operating or a proposed haulage system under the influence of externally alterable parameters, and the linear or integer model which is used as a tool for short or medium term optimization of the system under the operating constraints. In the first part of this paper, a brief discussion is presented of the linear/integer optimization models presented in the past, and in the second part a new model is described which is actually a combination of the simulation and the integer programming models. In its bare essentials, the model consists of an integer optimization algorithm, but the constraints are regularly and dynamically updated by incorporating the conclusions drawn from a stochastic simulation model of the mine haulage system. Since the successive optimization is performed by the mine operator who manipulates the constraints to guide the model towards the optimum, the mystical black box approach is minimized and should help in adoption of the model by the mine personnel. Also, by combining the stochastic simulation model and the deterministic integer model, some of the advantages of each are acquired.

INTRODUCTION As the experience in Canada indicates, it is becoming more and more common to evaluate major mining projects, especially those relating to uranium, with respect to their environmental effects. As part of this evaluation public hearings are becoming the rule rather than the exception. In this area the 1970's and presumably the 1980's can be characterized as the age of "Environmental Assessments" or "Environmental Impact Statements" which form the basis of these hearings. These documents tend to require significant amounts of research, data collection and effort in their preparation, and tend to be closely scrutinized by the hearing body and by groups in opposition to the project. This opposition is becoming more organized and sophisticated. The assessment or impact document, together with the evidence supporting it during the hearings can: (a) mean the difference between a lengthy and hence costly hearing and a smoother, shorter and less expensive one, (b) result in requirements for extensive modification at the expense of the proponent to his project, (c) result in the proponent being required to carry out extensive studies, research or monitoring programs, and (d) conceivably may in certain situations result in the project actually being turned down. Therefore, while on the one hand it is important to have available technical answers to concerns relating to uranium, its associated and perceived hazards, it is getting more and more important to be able to present these answers in both a written and oral format in such a way as to meet the criticism and concerns of the opposition, be they citizens in general or special interest groups including environmental lobbyists. An in-seam seismic (ISS) - based void detection technique was developed and tested for three general mine conditions: anthracite, bituminous and trona. The detection range tested varied from 80 to 100 m for trona mines and from 33 to 66 m for bituminous mines. High quality and broad band signals were obtained from these tests and were used to delineate the voids. The paper provides a brief discussion on the technical features of this void detection technique, the testing conditions and results, and a general assessment of the technique.

The mechanical mining of coal seams where roof, partings, and floor rock are extracted along with the coal often introduces large numbers of quartz particles into the mine atmosphere. This study concentrates on the quartz properties in situ and in the airborne dust to determine how they are released from the source rock and whether they are fractured by the mining machinery. Three mines using drum-type continuous miners from different geographic areas were sampled to provide a data base. The roof and floor rocks were primarily siltstones containing 5% to 25% quartz measured by the X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) method. Much of the work presented here is based on the morphologies of the mineral grains determined by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The study concentrated on particles of 0.2 to 10.0 µm and on particles containing > 75% Si. Mechanically-crushed quartz particles were also examined for comparison purposes. Particle shapes from the airborne samples suggested that fractured quartz particles were rare. Particle statistics also show that the average size of quartz particles in the airborne samples were similar to the average size of all particles. The conclusion is that very few quartz particles from the source rocks are fractured during mining due to their small initial size and the protection of the associated clays.

"Flotation is regarded as the best available method of upgrading minerals and coal fines. However, its efficiency deteriorates rapidly with decreasing particle size. Further, ultrafine concentrates are difficult to be dewatered economically, forcing companies to discard part of the ultrafine materials to impoundments. To overcome these problems, a new method of separating and simultaneously dewatering ultrafine particles has been developed. Following extensive laboratory-scale test work, the process, known as hydrophobic-hydrophilic separation (HHS), has been tested successfully in continuous operations at proof-of-concept (POC)- and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the HHS process is capable of producing high quality clean coal with high recoveries and low moistures. INTRODUCTION Coal preparation plants are designed with up to four parallel processing circuits for treating coarse (> 12 mm), intermediate (12x1 mm) small (1x0.15 mm), and fine (<0.15 mm) particles. The plus 0.15 mm fractions can be effectively cleaned efficiently with gravity separation methods (Wills, 2006). At present, the only commercially viable option for cleaning the finest fraction is froth flotation (Yoon et al., 1999). In flotation, air is dispersed in the form of small air bubbles in a tank in which coal fines are suspended. The small air bubbles selectively collect the hydrophobic coal particles and float to the surface, forming a froth phase which overflows into a launder. As is well known, ultrafine coal particles of less than 30-50 µm are difficult to be collected by the air bubbles, resulting in low recoveries. Furthermore, fine particle flotation suffers from low carrying capacities and poor selectivity due to entrainment problems. (Bethell et al., 2005; Luttrell et al., 2014). In addition, the froth products containing ultrafine coal are difficult to dewater. Mechanical dewatering in general becomes inefficient with decreasing particle size due to small cake porosity and high surface area, resulting in high moistures (Hucko et al., 1988). The cost often becomes prohibitive with particles of smaller than ~45 µm (Bethell et al., 2005). Moreover, the high-moisture products are difficult to handle and incur high shipping costs and lower thermal efficiencies (Honaker et al., 2013)"
