Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a common and well-known health hazard in the mining environment. The current approved method for monitoring both the organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC) portions of DPM is a laboratory method with a turnaround time of approximately one week. In order to evaluate exposure levels and take corrective action before overexposures occur, a portable real-time device capable of quantifying both OC and EC is needed. To that end, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed and tested a device based on narrow bandpass optical filters that is capable of targeting infrared absorbance bands associated with DPM. Five optical bandpass filters were chosen based on previous work quantifying DPM using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry. The resulting device, referred to as a filtometer, is optimized to exclusively determine DPM and could serve as a cost-effective, field-portable alternative to laboratory-grade FT-IR analysis and instrumentation. INTRODUCTION The estimation of ore reserves is a process that begins with the earliest exploration stages on a property and continues throughout any subsequent evaluation and exploitation of the deposit. During exploration and preliminary evaluation, the results of these reserve estimates constitute the basic data for prefeasibility studies and economic analysis. The decision to continue exploration and development or to abandon a prospect is often based upon these studies. During the active life of a mine, reserve computations are continuously revised to assist in development planning, cost and efficiency analyses, quality control, and improvement of extraction and processing methods. Accurate reserve estimates are also required when financing a project, purchasing or selling a property, and for accounting purposes such as depletion and tax calculation. It is important to remember that the reliability of ore reserve estimates varies progressively through time as more and more information becomes available. The lowest order of reliability of estimation of reserves exists at the time of discovery. The maximum level of certainty concerning the ore reserves within a deposit is reached when the deposit is completely mined out. Between these two extremes are variable levels of certainty as to the tonnage and grade of the resource. This is particularly true of that portion of the mineral resource that constitutes the "minable reserve," as this portion is dependent upon economic as well as geological and technological factors. In the following discussion, several of the factors affecting ore reserve computation and some of the commonly used methods of calculation are presented. The first part of the discussion is confined to classical methods of hand calculation utilizing level maps and sections. The second part of the discussion presents an overview of somewhat more sophisticated methods of geostatistics which have been developed within recent Years. Geostatistical methods frequently provide the best ore re- serve estimates for many deposits. However, a digital computer is required for such geostatistically derived estimates due to the number and complexity of the cornputations involved. For many properties the classical nongeostatistical methods are adequate, particularly in the early exploration stages. In fact, it is the author's contention that even at those properties where the geostatistical approach is employed for reserve estimation, the geological and engineering staffs should prepare an estimate by traditional means. This provides an internal audit for the reserves and at the same time requires a continuing close appraisal of geologic problems that influence the presently known geostatistically estimated reserves and production at the mine.

The practice of impounding mine water and liquid fine waste in underground mines is increasing. Often these underground impoundments are created by constructing seals or bulkheads designed to withstand the expected hydraulic pressures. Occasionally seals are built for another purpose, usually to act as explosion-resistant ventilation barriers. Due to factors such as clogged drain pipes or unexpectedly high inflow rates, these explosion-resistant seals sometimes become subjected to hydraulic pressures. The incidence of seal failures due to inadequate design and/or construction is also on the increase. Fortunately, to date, no lives have been lost by water seal failures, but a clearer understanding of the design and construction considerations specific to water seals is vital to keep this from occurring in the future. This paper presents technical considerations for the design and construction of seals which will specifically be required to withstand hydraulic pressures in underground mines.

The Nevada Barite industry has experienced a 277% growth over the last five years with a total production of 2,542,000 tons. Total production prior to 1970 approximates 2,700,000 tons dating back to 1907 Annual production, as can be seen in Table 1, has increased from 192,000 tons in 1971 to 723,000 tons in 1975. During this same period U.S production has increased from 825,000 tons to 1,056,000 tons. Nevada is now the leading producer with 69% of the market. The increase in the Nevada barite production is, of course, directly related to the increased demand for weight material coupled with the lack of other sources and the relative economic advantage of the Nevada barite, A significant tonnage of Nevada barite is utilized in the non-oil well market, principally at FMC's barite chemical plant at Modesto, California; however the growth has been in the oil well market.

Techniques utilized to incorporate geological data in computer modeling and ore reserve estimation have undergone considerable evolution during the past fifteen years. Computer analysis and evaluation of two precious metal deposits are presented as examples of innovative computer techniques developed at Asarco. The first is a gold deposit occurring in a steeply dipping Pre-Cambrian greenstone sequence. The second is a manto-like manganiferous silver deposit occurring in a relatively flat sequence of Late-Paleozoic sediments. In both deposits, four sub-horizontal zones of geological influence are evaluated.

Ground support systems must provide safe and effective designs for underground excavations under high stress conditions. These systems must be capable to resist dynamic impacts and yielding during the loading process. In this context dynamic testing of the reinforcement and retaining elements that compose the ground support system are required to study and improve the behaviour of these elements under dynamic load events. During the last years, Geobrugg has been working on the improvement of retaining products by testing them in a large-scale impact test facility located at Walenstadt, Switzerland. The test facility is composed of a double level platform with a square-shaped pyramidal trunk geometry, in the upper level housing a loading mass that drop from a height up to 5m. The loading mass is guided by one central steel pipe, and the impact occurs in the sample to be tested located at the lower level in a slab with an area of 3.6m × 3.6m where the ground support system is installed. During the last years, this innovative facility has been used to test several configurations of ground support systems. The results of these tests have enabled to improve the understating of the behaviour of ground support systems under dynamic loads. In this manuscript, the arrangement, measurement, results, and the preliminary analysis of a single impact dynamic test performed during 2021 of a ground support system with a high-tensile steel wire mesh MINAX 80-4.6 is presented.

Gold processing methods have evolved to such an extent that low grade and complex ores once considered uneconomic are now becoming viable. Constant efforts are underway to innovate technologies in order to improve the efficiencies and cut down the capital and operating costs. The methods are discussed.

With continuing pressure from stockholders not only to maintain but to increase mineral revenues, producers have increased plant capacity. Depressed mineral prices have accentuated the trend toward higher production rates to maintain consistent cash flow, and these same trends have promoted the development of large-scale processing equipment. In addition to the need to handle increased throughput, larger flotation equipment can result in decreased capital-equipment and operating costs. The development of larger column and conventional flotation equipment relies, in part, on suitable scale-up procedures. To properly scale-up large flotation cells and columns, certain constraints and design parameters must be taken into consideration, including velocities in the vessel, residence time, solids suspension, and lip loading. This paper will review the design constraints and scale-up criteria for WEMCO® flotation cells. Scale-up criteria are augmented with computational-fluid- dynamics analyses and high-speed imaging techniques, as well as multiple regresesion analysis of in-plant operational data.

The possibility that a hypothesis explains almost all observed facts may be satisfying. Yet the almost gives a distinct sense of uncertainty. Moreover, overlooking the almost, reliance on the favored hypothesis may close our eyes to the discovery of new information and, in the field of mineral exploration, to the possibilities of finding new and hidden ores. A case in point is that of mines such as the Elizabeth and Ely, along the copper belt in eastern Vermont, principally in Orange County. The geology of the Strafford Quadrangle, where the Elizabeth Mine is located, has been described by Doll (1944). Two informative papers (McKinstry and Mikkola, 1954, Howard, 1959) present much valuable information about the geology of the Elizabeth Mine. Both reach the conclusion that the ores were emplaced after the peak of metamorphism, through the agency of metal-bearing hydrothermal solutions. Both, therefore, conclude that the source of the ores was somewhere below the outcrop area, presumably in some hidden intrusive mass. Neither yields a satisfactory guide for further exploration. Howard (1959) cites geophysical observations which show that there is a mass with a density similar to that of granite under the Strafford dome, adjacent to the Elizabeth Mine on the West. Yet examination of gneissic granite in the Chester dome, 25 miles to the South gives no suggestion of a young, near-surface intrusive capable of carrying or mobilizing large quantities of sulfur and metals. A statistically-designed exper¬mental study showed how gangue minerals, flux additions, fineness of grind, firing temperature and time affect the properties of acid pellets made from a Western Australian hematite ore. Alumina has less effect than silica and lime, but various interactions between the six variables occur, which influence abrasion index, reducibility and cold compression strength. Finer grinding has little influence on reducibility but improves the other two properties. The major variable is firing temperature. It interacts with all other variables in its effects on pellet properties. Calculations based on the data show the implications for straight-grate pellet plants and optimum hood temperature range.

Non-ferrous smelting industry in Japan often had the severe problems about the over production of sulfuric acid. There has been such a closed relation between amount of sulfuric acid from non-ferrous smelting industry and the products of copper, zinc and lead metals that the production of one ton of copper accompanies three tons of H2S04. When the proper balance exists in both markets this situation certainly brings bigger profits. In Xining and Metallurgical Institute of Japan the research commitee concerned with the fixation process of sulfur in non-ferrous smelting industry was established in 1977 and continued the activity for four years untill 1981. This paper will introduce some of the activities involved in the report published by the committee.

Previous research developed guide- lines to restrict the placement of air velocity sensors to areas of Low turbulence in underground nines. Even though these guidelines are theoretically correct, and may be easy to follow in underground coal mines, their application in small underground metal mines is difficult. As a result, study was undertaken at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine to determine if an air velocity sensor could be placed in other locations with acceptable results. It was found chat by applying a variable calibration function to correct for changes in amounts of turbulence, instead of the previously used calibration factor multiplication, the sensor could be used successfully in areas of moderate turbulence.

In mineral processing, the last century of the current millenium has been the century of froth flotation. The process did not result from fundamental research, but was developed over the years by empirical methods. In more recent years, our understanding of the fundamental principles of the flotation process have made significant strides. This paper reviews some of the historical perspectives of developments in flotation reagents, the development and application of experimental tools for delineating flotability and interfactial phenomena, advances in flotation fundamentals, and the development of flotation kinetics, both macroscopic and microscopic subprocesses. Through the application of surface chemistry, the flotation process has permitted economic utilization of a vast array of complex ores.

In conjunction with experiments to improve the particle size preparation of coal bore cores prior to washability testing, discrete-event breakage of coal, shale and homogeneous low-strength concrete cores was studied. Breakage of individual size classes by drop-shatter and by incremental tumbling in an end-over-end hand-driven tumbling cylinder revealed systematic changes in the breakage function, namely, that breakage in any size class diminishes as the number of events increases. The effect of the fines removal enhances the breakage of harder material (having lower grindability indices), but appears to have less effect for softer material.

The Tenmile Range is a north trending zone of high relief within the central Colorado porphyry-mineral belt, located between Leadville and Breckenridge. (Figure 1, the Index Map of the area surveyed.) The Climax mineralized zone is located at the southern end of the range on the northwest side of the Continental Divide. This portion of the total area surveyed will be discussed in detail today. A fixed wing aeromagnetic survey was flown over this range and mineralized zone in the fall of 1957. The survey was run as an experiment to see if a useful geophysical tool could be applied in the exploration for similar type deposits. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of this survey and the approaches used to aid in the interpretation of the total intensity data.

"The East Side Access (ESA) CM005 Contract - Manhattan South Structures - consists of the installation of the waterproofing and final concrete lining for railroad tunnels, 3-Level Wye track turnout structures, segments of the Main Cavern Station, and a series of Ventilation Structures excavated beneath the existing Metro North Railroad (MNR) Grand Central Terminal. Several key team decisions made collectively by the Construction Manager (CM), Designer, and the Contractor has allowed the scheduled construction duration of 29 months to be maintained. These strategies include the use of alternate design and construction methods, including the use of pneumatically applied concrete lining and precast lining. This paper discusses these strategies, and illustrates how successful teamwork and cooperation during the execution of a large-scale construction project can lead to lowering costs, improving quality, and maintaining the overall project schedule. INTRODUCTION The East Side Access Project The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already over congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodate the NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the NYCT Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The ESA Project includes building new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. (See Figure 1).The Manhattan Alignment In the Manhattan segment of the ESA Project the excavation in hard rock of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and shafts has been completed by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header. The construction of the structural concrete final lining, interior structures and fit-out of the previously excavated caverns and tunnels are currently being performed under Contract CM005 Manhattan South Structures awarded to Michels Corporation and Contract CM006 Manhattan North Structures awarded to Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspects of Contract CM005 which is the first ESA Contract in Manhattan to successfully construct concrete final linings in pre-existing excavated areas."

Airflow patterns in longwall bleeder systems are affected by gob permeability and porosity and the condition of the gateroad entries after mining. As longwall panels are mined, areas of the caved zone and portions of the remaining gateroad entries become inaccessible, making direct ventilation measurement impossible. Mine operators are left to estimate direction and amount of airflow in the gob and the surrounding gateroads. The most readily available locations are where air enters the worked-out area, approved measurement point locations (MPLs) and/or evaluation points such as bleeder evaluation points, intake evaluation points, and the outer bleeder entry. Ventilation models (network or Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD) can model the gob and the surrounding bleeder system but calibrating these models is difficult without field data. NIOSH installed a tube sampling system ahead of a longwall face and, as the face retreated, released a slug of tracer gas (SF6) to determine transportation times and flow rates in the inaccessible gateroads. The data was used to calibrate both network and CFD ventilation models for a longwall panel. Both model types were used to predict the airflow patterns in the gob and to determine the airflow rate from the longwall tailgate corner back to the bleeders.

I welcome this opportunity to appear before you and to review briefly the various health and safety services of the Bureau of Mines available to the mining industry, other than coal, and also to tell of our plans for extending these services to improve safety and health conditions. The Bureau's health and safety activities are basically services by which we attempt to develop and disseminate information on improved techniques in mine accident prevention and promote mine safety education in the mineral industries. Unfortunately, some mining companies, particularly some of the smaller operations, seem to be unfamiliar with these services, The Bureau of Mines is charged by law with the responsibility for inspecting coal mines; other services to the coal mining industry and are provided only on request, Safety inspections and other services that we offer are provided for noncoal mining industries solely upon request.

Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.
