Fluorine is a lively element in both its chemical and economic behavior. It was not isolated as an element until 1886 by Moissan. However, its principal source to this day, fluorspar, was known and its special merits recognized long before that time. Our own mining brother, Agricola, is credited with having named fluorite, the mineral name, in 1546 from the Latin, "fluere", to flow. It made things melt and was already being used as a flux. Because fluorspar has been found as a relatively common gangue mineral in metal ore veins, it has long attracted the attention of geological thinkers seeking to, explain the whys and wherefores of veins. Fluorine has been thought of as one of the principal mineralizers, holding metals in ascending vein solutions for deposition close enough to the eventual surface to be accessible for profitable mining.

RIP is the process of recovering uranium from an unclarified slime pulp which comes in contact with a moving bed of ion exchange resin, T e sand-slime separation of the acid-leach slurry is accomplished through the use of cyclones and spiral, akins type classifiers. Course sands are discarded to tailings and the combined slimes and leach liquor become the IX feed. Uranium in the IX feed is absorbed on the resin and after exhaustion the barren pulp is directed to tails, Following the uranium exhaustion cycle an eluant solution passes through the resin bed stripping the uranium from the beads, The uranium is precipitated from the clarified pregnant eluant, filtered, dried and packaged for shipment to the AEC, Normally, the ore received at the Mines Development plant is a loosely cemented sandstone containing small quantities of clay and bentonite, The ore is easily crushed and requires only a 1/3 load of rods in the rod mill to reduce the ore to grain size, Very little of the ore is recirculated by the 42" spiral classifier.

High anionic functionality acrylamide co-polymers and poly(sodium acrylate) are used as red mud flocculants in bauxite processing operations. These synthetic polymers are effectively displacing starch as the dominant polymer in red mud settling. The performance of these polymers is primarily dependent on the bauxite mineralogy, the alkalinity of the red mud slurry, and the anionic functionality and molecular size (viscosity) of the polymer. In this paper, the physical and chemical properties of the synthetic watersoluble polymers will be reviewed. The relationship between polymer structure and red mud slurry properties as they control polymer performance in settling red muds common to digester and washer circuits will be illustrated. The availability of polymers of varying functionality and viscosity will permit bauxite processors to make significant improvements in the economics of red mud disposal and valuable reagent recovery.

Two recently published papers describing the use of psychological tests for selection and placement of coal mine personnel have created considerable interest within the Coal Industry, one paper, published in the April 1957 "Mining Congress Journal," entitled "Personnel Evaluation and Training," discusses the use of tests by the Christopher Coal Company, The second paper, published in the "West -Virginia Coal Mining Institute's 1957 Report" and in the September 1957 "Coal Age," entitled "Testing to Select Better Personnel for Coal Mining Today," outlines Hanna Coal Company's test and selection procedures. Since these rather detailed sources are readily available, and to avoid repetition of the material in them, we will confine this paper to a very brief review of the essential steps already taken by these companies and a more extensive look at newer material. Briefly, the Personnel Managers, Mr. Harold L, Durrett and Mr. Albert M,. Rowe, of the Hanna Coal Company and Christopher Coal Company, in conjunction with Dr. Quin F, Curtis, Head of the Psychology Department of West Virginia University, developed two different groups oftests for coal mine personnel, The first group oftests was designed to assist in the selection of supervisors. These tests of the supervisory group were "The California Short Form Test of Mental Maturity - Advanced Series," which gave an I.Q. rating, and the second test is known as "The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory," which measures several personality characteristics, These tests must be given, grade, and interpreted by a person trained in psychological testing. As a result of testing all of Christopher's supervisory employees (seventy in number) by this method, and then comparing the individual results with the individual ratings of the foremen on the job, a so-called foremen's scale was developed. If this resulting foremen's scale had been used to select the foremen who were rated as, the best men in on-the-job performance, it would have correctly identified seventy-four percent of that group.

Less than optimum production in mining always results when poorly blasted material is provided at loading points. More often than not the cause is due to blasting founds that fail to fully control and utilize explosive energy. In many cases the problem exists because too few blasters understand how blastholes actually break rock and recognize that blasting is a three-dimensional process in designing their blasts. To better understand how blasts can be more effectively designed the two major rock breakage processes are described. In addition, the respective contributions of the borehole and detonation pressures are defined as are the specific roles of the several important blasting design variables. The concept of stiffness as an engineering principle and its significance in blasting design is introduced for explaining the breakup of rock. Basic guidelines for affecting control over fragmentation and side effects like over-break are offered.

The two calcium sulfate minerals, gypsum and anhydrite, occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaSO, . 2H20) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO,) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the larger part of total calcium sulfate resources. Although it has very minor economic use, it is important to the understanding of gypsum deposits and is referred to frequently in the following discussion. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal constituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [ ] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have not yet been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. Most gypsum produced ranges from 80 to 95% pure and beneficiation is normally limited to selective mining or quarrying or upgrading by crushing and screening during mill processing. END USES The largest use for gypsum is based upon the unique property which calcium sulfate has of readily giving up, or taking on, water of crystallization. With the application of a moderate amount of heat in a process known as calcining, gypsum is converted to plaster of paris, the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 ½ H2O), which when mixed with water will set or harden as the calcium sulfate returns to the stable dihydrate form. This semifinished product, usually called stucco, is then manufactured into a large variety of plasters, wallboard, and block for construction use, or into plasters for industrial applications. About 75% of the gypsum used in the United States is calcined for these purposes. Uses of uncalcined gypsum are principally as a retarder for portland cement, as a soil conditioner, as a mineral filler, and other minor industrial applications. About 25% of the gypsum mined in the United States goes into these markets; however, in other countries with building practices different from those in the United States and Canada, relative usage varies widely. Calcium sulfate deposits are the world's largest sulfur resources; minor quantities of gypsum and anhydrite have been used to produce sulfur or sulfur compounds. This use is accompanied by a unique site-specific set of economics because sulfur is generally available from non-gypsum sources at lower cost.

The Bellavista Gold Deposit lies 75 Kms north west of San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, Central America and 3 Kms north east of Miramar, in the Province of Puntarenas. The total road distance from San Jose to the deposit is 120 Kms all paved road except for a 2.5 Km graded, gravel road on the property (Figure 1). Infrastructure services in the Miramar-Puntarenas area are well developed with electrical power distribution, a modern port facility and community services being available. The deposit lies on the south west flank of the Tilaran Mountain Range between an elevation of 550 and 800 meters above sea level. The local topography is steep, originally covered with pre-montaine, tropical wet forest vegetation which has been largely destroyed due to clearing for cattle grazing. The annual rainfall is approximately 2,950 mms, 90% of which occurs between May and October.

[The Atlantis-II-Deep is a hydrothermal mineralization located along the median valley of the Red Sea at a water depth of about 2200 m. Extensive exploration of the metal-rich brine deep revealed a potentially mineable deposit on economic interest consisting of oxides, silicates and sulphides with considerable concentrations of zinc, copper, cadmium and silver. Geostatistics was applied to assess the most likely in-situ vague of the metal potential for economical exploitation. Semi-variograms were constructed to characterize the structure of the regionalized distribution of the geological parameters. Volume grades and thicknesses were determined by the kriging technique, avoiding systematically biased high or low grades, and then block .tonnages were computed. The estimation variances, distribution of errors and histograms of observed and kriged values in each grid Mock were also produced.]

Contrary to active subsidence, which occurs concurrently with mining operations, or is completed within a few days following coal extraction, delayed subsidence may take many years to appear at the surface after coal mines are abandoned. There are two principal morphological types of delayed subsidence: troughs, which are shallow depressions, and sinks, which are steep-sided crown pits. Both types are damaging to surface structures, and a variety of methods have been introduced to deal with the problem, ranging from subsidence insurance to site restitution. In planning insurance or restitution measures, a predictive model is of value in estimating the magnitude of the problem and the size of long-term budgetary commitments. Only one model is known, which was developed for the Bureau of Mines by GAI Consultants of Monroeville (l,2,3). The GAI model is presented in qualitative terms. This report develops a formal basis for the model and tests a numerical implementation on one of the best-described study areas, Allleqheny County in Pennsylvania.

Many companies in the mining and minerals processing industry are finding themselves in the transition stage from the Industrial Age to the Information Age and are trying to become prepared for the Knowledge Age. To remain competitive in the decades ahead, they are faced with integrating the enterprise through the use of computers and networks. This paper discusses some common human and organizational barriers to enter- prise integration. It proposes how to develop the organizational and human' networks to match the capabilities of the technical networks which are being' implemented. Ten practical considerations are then presented for consideration in the executive suite in addressing the human side of implementing the computer integrated enterprise.

The Zabirah bauxite is a Cretaceous paleolaterite exposed by postTertiary uplift and erosion of the Phanerozoic sequence. The laterite profile, which is preserved in situ, occupies a prominent angular unconformity over a sequence of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones ranging from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous in age, and is overlain by a Late Cretaceous terrigenous and carbonate package. The profile is known to be preserved over an area of 250 sq km and at depths below the present surface of up to 80 m. The bauxite layer is hard, compact and predominantly pisolitic, with a variety of subordinate, superimposed textures resulting from post-formation alteration. The bauxite minerals are boehmite and gibbsite. Boehmite generally predominates, and the boehmite:gibbsite ratio averages 2:1, with a marked tendency for the proportion of boehmite to increase down the profile. Kaolinite, a major constituent of the profile, is concentrated in two zones, one above and one below the pisolitic bauxite layer. Iron content is variable and bears a direct relationship to parent-rock lithology. Genesis and preservation of the bauxite are due to the favourable coincidence of a number of geological controls of which the most significant are the local structural and sedimentary regimes, the lithology and chemistry of the parent rocks, and the Cretaceous paleogeography of the region.

The Pokorny sulfur deposit is located in the northwest comer of the Delaware basin in the Rustler Springs sulfur district of west Texas. To date, 57 sulfur test wells have been drilled by Addwest Minerals delineating a resource of greater than one million long tons (It) of native sulfur. The deposit, hosted by the Permian Ochoan Castile Formation evaporite sequence, is a sulfur-bearing bioepigenetic limestone replacement of banded bituminous anhydrite. Three distinct mineralized horizons are present that correlate with zones of halite dissolution in the Castile. Sulfur mineralization occurs as hydrocarbon-poor disseminated grains, and as crystalline linings of discontinuous planar voids and large vugs.

Artificial Intelligence research has produced several tools for commercial application. Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic and Expert Systems are some of the techniques that are widely used today. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are excellent predictive, pattern recognition, and data analysis tools. In the mining industry, ANN techniques are being used commercially for real-time process control applications. Modeling of spatial data, ore reserve estimation, tunnel design, longwall stability prediction, and geologic roof classification are additional application areas in which neural networks have been applied successfully. A standard back-propagation algorithm was used to train a series of neural networks for a real-world predictive task. After training and optimizing the neural network architecture, performance of the network is measured on an independent validation set. Results indicate a correlation coefficient of up to 84 % between the actual and predicted values. A neural network model is developed for learning the spatial continuity of a mineral field and, consequently, for predicting sulfur values given coordinate values. The neural network performed not only satisfactorily, but in some cases performed better than the kriging model.

The rare earth elements (REE) which include the 15 lanthanide elements (Z = 57 through 71) and yttrium (Z = 39) are so called because the elements were originally isolated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as oxides from rare minerals. Most REE are not as uncommon in nature as the name implies. Cerium, the most abundant REE (Table 1), comprises more of the earth's crust than copper or lead. Many REE are more common than tin and molyb¬denum, and all but promethium are more common than silver or mercury (Taylor, 1964). Promethium (Z = 61) is best known as an artificial element, but has been reported in very minute quantities in natural materials. Lanthanide elements with low atomic numbers are generally more abundant in the earth's crust than those with high atomic numbers. In addition, lanthanide elements with even atomic numbers are two to seven times more abundant than adjacent lan¬thanides (Table 1) with odd atomic numbers. The lanthanide elements traditionally have been divided into two groups: the light rare earths (LREE), lanthanum through eu¬ropium (Z = 57 through 63); and the heavy rare earths (HREE), gadolinium through lutetium (Z = 64 through 71). Although yttrium is the lightest REE, it is usually grouped with the HREE to which it is chemically and physically similar. The REE are lithophile elements (elements enriched in the earth's crust) that invariably occur together naturally because all are trivalent (except for Ce+4 and Eu+2 in some environments) and have similar ionic radii. Increase in atomic number in the lanthanide group is accompanied by addition of electrons to an inner level rather than the outer shell. Consequently, there is no change in valence with change in atomic number, and the lanthanide elements all fall into the same cell of the periodic table. The chemical and physical differences that do exist within the REE group are caused by small differences in ionic radius, and generally result in segre¬gation of REE into deposits enriched in either light lanthanides or heavy lanthanides plus yttrium. The relative abundance of individual lanthanide elements has been found useful in the modelling of rock-forming processes. Comparisons are generally made using a logarithmic plot of lanthanide abundances normalized to abundances in chondritic (stony) meteorites. The use of this method eliminates the abundance vari¬ation between lanthanides of odd and even atomic number, and allows determination of the extent of fractionation between the lanthanides because such fractionation is not considered to have taken place during chondrite formation. The method is also useful because chondrites are thought to be compositionally similar to the original earth's mantle. Europium anomalies (positive or negative departures of europium from chondrite-normalized plots) have been found to be particularly effective for petrogenetic modelling. REE were originally produced in minor amounts from small deposits in granite pegmatite, the geologic environment in which they were discovered. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, REE came mainly from placer deposits. With the exception of the most abundant lanthanide el¬ements (cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium), individual REE were not commercially available until the 1940s. Since 1965, most of the world's REE have come from two hard rock deposits: Mountain Pass, United States, and Bayan Obo, China. GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF REE DEPOSITS More than 70% of the world's REE raw materials come from three countries: China, the United States, and Australia. China emerged as a major producer of REE raw materials during the 1980s, while Australian and United States market share decreased dramatically (Fig. 1). Table 2 gives recent annual production figures along with estimated reserves by country, and Fig. 2 shows loca¬tions of significant REE mining. MINERALS THAT CONTAIN REE Although REE comprise significant amounts of many minerals, almost all production has come from less than ten minerals. Table 3 lists minerals that have yielded REE commercially or have po¬tential for production in the future. Extraction from a potentially economic REE resource is strongly dependant on its REE miner¬alogy. Minerals that are easily broken down, such as bastnasite, are more desirable than those that are difficult to dissociate, such as allanite. In general, producing deposits contain REE-bearing min¬erals that are relatively easy to concentrate because of coarse grain size or other attributes. This paper reviews earlier in-plant testing at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant at Port Cartier, Quebec, Canada. It describes the result of the more prolonged use of coke breeze during recent months and in addition, the effects of varying dolomite and coke additives upon the metallurgical properties of the pellet production have been studied. Mention is also made of some brief test work carried out to use peat moss as a carbonaceous additive to the pelletizing process and in particular the plans for future work in this respect. Earlier laboratory pot-grate test work had indicated that a production rate increase of between fifteen and twenty percent was a practical possibility, or alternatively that the plant could be run at design rating with significantly lower energy consumption. These energy reductions were of the order of ten to fifteen percent for fuel and main process fan power respectively. The physical and metallurgical pellet properties for both blast furnace and direct reduction furnace use were little affected by the production rate increases, and were actually somewhat improved when practicing maximum energy conservations. Pellet properties could be further improved by not extracting the maximum energy economy. Two phases of carefully controlled in-plant testing were run to assess the effect of energy conservation under plant conditions. These two phases of testing confirmed that an overall fuel saving of approximately fifteen percent could be realized, with a reduction in the Bunker C oil consumption of about forty-five percent, and a reduction in main process fan power of approximately ten to fifteen percent. The present scope of work is aimed at establishing the use of varying levels of coke addition up to about one percent under normal plant operating conditions.

Gentlemen : My object reads "Longwall Rapid Advance of Coal Mining in the Federal Republic of Germany". It is true that the percentage of coal obtained in your country from longwall faces, with at present 1.2, is still rather low, but it increased considerably since 1966 with 0.4 %. The coal mines of the Federal Republic of Germany ever used longwall as the classical method of coal getting. All attempts to introduce bord and pillar mining did not lead to any wider application of this method. The principal reasons, for this appear to have been: - the deeper depth of our workings, - the wish to keep working losses as low as possible and to utilize the deposits opened up by deep and therefore expensive shafts to the furthest possible degree, - the dense sequence of seams and the mutual influencing of the working points, - the high number of disturbances in the geologically much stressed deposits, - and the necessary considerations to the protection of the densely built-upon surface.

Tripoli is a naturally occurring, finely divided form of silica found chiefly in midwestern and southeastern states and used commercially in fillers and abrasives. The name comes from the location of a silica deposit in North Africa and was applied in the latter part of the 19th century to similar material near Seneca, Missouri. Subsequently, the North African material was found to be diatomite, composed of siliceous skeletons of microscopic marine plants called diatoms, and the material's name was changed to tripolite. The name, tripoli, remained with the Missouri silica, which is inorganic in origin, and tripoli is now used to designate all naturally occurring silica that is similar in characteristics and origin to the Missouri material. Just to confuse things further, in commercial trade tripoli usually designates silica from the Missouri-Oklahoma field, whereas silica from southern Illinois, the other major producing area, is called amorphous silica. Each term, however, may be used commercially for any material, regardless of place of origin that has the characteristics or uses ascribed to material from either major producing area. For example, Engineering and Mining Journal routinely lists under "tripoli," prices "f.o.b. Elco, I11." and "f.o.b. Seneca, Mo. and Rogers, Ark.", and under "silica, amorphous," prices "f.o.b. I11 and "f.o.b. Dierks, Ark." "Soft silica" is another term that has been applied to tripoli from Illinois, west central Arkansas, and Tennessee, presumably to distinguish it from the more compact Missouri material. It has also been used in the ceramic trade to distinguish tripoli from "hard" silica, or silica flour, which is produced by pulverizing silica sand. Tripoli is produced mainly in extreme southwestern Illinois, in the Missouri-Oklahoma district in Newton County, Missouri, and Ottawa County, Oklahoma; and in the novaculite belt of west central Arkansas. Some tripoli is produced for local and specialized uses near Austin, Texas.

Results obtained from conditional simulations and multiple indicator kriging were compared in the assessment of two different mining methods proposed for the extraction of the down-dip extension of a nickel-sulfide ore body located in the Thompson mining camp, Canada. An enhanced turning band simulation algorithm, supplemented with an unfolding technique, was used. A floating stope optimization process was used to effectively compare tonnage and grade figures. A calibration exercise was also conducted in the upper portion of the ore body. This study demonstrates that conditional simulations provide better spatial models for conceptual mine design and capital budgeting decisions.

The Sunshine Mining Co. has recently started up its new silver refinery in Kellogg, ID. The new plant recovers silver anc copper values from a high grade tetrahedrite concentrate using hydro- metallurgical processes. The plant and process are both new and have gone through the initial startup phase during the first six months of 1985. The full scale plant was developed from laboratory test work. While the metallurgy of the process worked as expected, the material handling problems were difficult to over-come. As might be expected, those parts of the plant that represented available technology started up easily, while the parts that represented new technology presented the most difficulty. Topics covered in this paper include: 1) insufficient type and amount of agitation in the leach vessels, 2) discharge of a non- homogeneous slurry from the leach vessels, and 3) problems associated with very low flow rates in slurry lines.

Equations developed by an early researcher in subsidence, F. Martos of Budapest, Hungary, have been slightly modified to produce effective equations for predicting the time-dependent nature of Green River trona mine subsidence. Following the initial study, a survey was run to check the results twenty years after mining of the area had been completed. The final results were within a few centimeters of the value that had been projected. Mining conditions in the Green River area are ideal for this sort of study with trough type subsidence being the surface manifestation of high extraction underground room and pillar caving operations.
