Coal and water are the two basic external feedstocks required for a coal gasification project. The WESCO project in northwest New Mexico, a joint undertaking of Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation and Pacific Lighting Corporation, will require about 25,000 tons of coal and approximately 7.5 million gallons of water each day to produce 250 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of pipeline quality substitute natural gas (SNG). The coal and water supply arrangement with Utah International, Inc. assures the project of an adequate supply of these two vital feedstocks.

Pea Ridge Iron Ore Co., previously Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property, now wholly owned by St. Joe, is located near Sullivan, MO, about 112 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950s by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drill¬ing in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was minable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Pro¬duction commenced in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 396 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 792 m (2600 ft) long, and up to 182 m (600 ft) thick. It dips about 1.39 rad (80°) and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 45-m (150-ft) intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the ore body on 58-m (190-ft) centers. Banks of stopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modi¬fied shrinkage stoping method (Fig. 1). This was done by undercutting a 12 m (40 ft) wide by 45-m (150-ft) long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 1.5-m (5-ft) intervals. A 20-m (65-ft) sill was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fin¬gers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a "lattice" of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar re¬covery program was necessary (Fig. 2). INITIAL PILLAR RECOVERY PROGRAM The program was started in the upper western por¬tion of the ore body, furthest from the shafts. Due to the fact that the ore body narrows in the western extremity, the stope orientation was changed to mini¬mize required development. This left pillars 18 to 24 m (60 to 80 ft) wide and up to 79 m (260 ft) in length. The area selected for the start of the program had been developed between the uppermost level at 419 m (1375 ft) below surface and the 510-m (1675-ft) level. Due to the 91-m (300-ft) difference in depth, sublevels were driven on 15-m (50-ft) intervals and the ore was taken by rather classical sublevel stoping methods (Fig. 3). This left a structure with accesses compatible with drilling with 114-mm (41/2-in.) bore drifters mounted on columns. Most holes were drilled 63.5 mm (21h in.) diam and reamed to 100 or 127 mm (4 or 5 in.). Practical depth capability was about 21 m (70 ft) for holes above horizontal and 13 to 15 m (45 to 50 ft) for holes below horizontal. The interdependence of these long pillars necessitated that several of them be blasted simultaneously, making large blasts the only practical approach. Due to the required length of such loading cam¬paigns, it was necessary to select an explosive which could stand in the hole in an underground mine for a 4 to 6 week period. After some consideration a pump¬ able water gel was selected for both uphole and down¬hole loading. This afforded a high velocity, high density explosive which could be handled in large quantities. Loading the downholes was a fairly straightforward process. The holes were lined with an 8 mil polybutylene plastic sleeve and water gel was pumped into them with a double diaphragm pump mounted on the bottom of a stainless steel tub with a 81-kg (180-1b) capacity. Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), an alkali compound that is the 11th largest inorganic chemical in terms of production of all domestic inorganic and organic chemicals, excluding petrochemical feedstocks. Despite that most people have never heard of soda ash, it is an important industrial compound used to manufacture glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and many other familiar consumer products. Natural alkalis have been used by mankind for thousands of years; however, their industrial manufacture dates back to only the latter half of the 18th century. Natural deposits of sodium carbonate have been known as early as about 3500 BC, when the Egyptians used natural soda ash in making glass. They also mixed lime and soda ash to make sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) that was combined with silicate minerals found in the Sinai desert. This made a soluble silica, which when added to aluminum-rich silt from the Nile River, produced a silica- aluminate cement mortar with excellent bonding properties for construction. The Romans in the first century AD also used natural soda ash in glass manufacture but expanded its use medically for the treatment of colic pains and skin eruptions, and in the making of bread. Elsewhere, people used the ashes of wood to obtain their source of alkali. People learned over time that different types of wood yielded various ashes with different properties; therefore, various plants were burned specifically for their ashes. Ash from plants grown in salt-bearing soils (such as saltwort) and from kelp and other seaweeds, especially Spanish barilla, were so different from ashes obtained from other vegetation that it became known as soda ash (due to its sodium content) versus pot ash, a potassium-based alkali ash. About 13 t of barilla ashes produced 1 t of sodium carbonate and 14 kg of iodine as a byproduct. The difference between these two ashes was relatively obscure until Duhamel Dumonceau made the distinction clear in 1736. The word soda ash developed from common usage and is perhaps more well known today than its synonym sodium carbonate. One of the primary ores of soda ash is trona, a sodium carbonate-bearing mineral that's name is traced back to Arabic origin. Trona also is known internationally by other names such as urao (Venezuela), kaum (Nigeria), natron (from Greek nitron and Latin natrium), and szekso (Hungary). The beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe in the late 18th century soon put a strain on the availability of raw materials to meet consumer demands. One of these scarce materials was soda ash. Because of the Seven Years War with England and the Napoleonic wars with other parts of Europe, France could not obtain sufficient quantities of Spanish barilla or other supplies of vegetable alkali to meet the growing demand. Efforts were needed to synthesize soda ash. In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a large prize of 2,400 livres to someone who could find an inexpensive method to make soda ash. In September 1791 at St. Denis, Nicolas Leblanc (1742- 1806), a French chemist, developed such a technique using salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. The French Revolution interfered with its development, and his patent and factory were confiscated with Leblanc receiving only token compensation. Napoleon returned his factory to him; however, Leblanc was not able to raise enough capital to reopen it, and he committed suicide in 1806. A small, but not particularly successful, Leblanc plant was established in England in 1814. It was not until 1823 when the process first became commercially successful in Liverpool, England. The process was introduced in Germany in 1843 and in Austria in 1851 (Harness and Coons, 1942). Soda ash production by the Leblanc process reached its peak of about 599 500 t in 1880, after which it began to decline as the Solvay process became more popular. The Leblanc process was used to a limited extent in Europe during World War I but had disappeared by World War II. The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, was developed by Alfred and Ernest (1 838-1922) Solvay in 1861 based on a concept by Fresnel that had been known since 1811. For the next 50 years, the implementation of the idea evaded industrial chemists because no large-scale and economic means could be found to commercialize the concept. Although Ernest Solvay was unaware of the existance of an ammonia-soda concept, he solved the problems by utilizing carbonating towers. The Solvay process produced soda ash from salt, limestone, and coke, with ammonia as a catalyst. With a capital of 136,000 francs, the first plant was built by the Solvay brothers at Couillet, Belgium, in 1863 with production commencing in 1865. Synthetic soda ash production amounted to 1.5 tpd in 1866, but reached 10 tpd by 1872. They patented their use of carbonating towers in 1872 that had made ammonia-soda manufacturing a successful continuous process. Their second plant was built in 1872 at Dombasle, France. In 1874, the first Solvay plant in England was built at Northwich by Ludwig Mond, the namesake of Brunner Mond and Co. (formerly Imperial Chemical Industries), the company that currently operates the two English Solvay plants. In the United States, William B. Cogswell in February 1879 heard a presentation on the Solvay process and sailed to Europe to meet with the Solvay brothers to seek their support for using their process in New York. At first, the brothers were not interested; however, Mr. Cogswell was persistent and ultimately gained their support. The Solvay Rocess Co. was formed Sep. 2 1, 1881, and construction began immediately on the first Solvay plant at Geddes, near Syracuse, NY. The plant came onstream Jan. 10, 1884, and produced 11 180 t in its first year of operation. In 1910, rotary calciners were installed that increased capacity to 1 000 tpd. By 1930, plant capacity was up to 2 400 tpd. The facility remained in continuous operation for more than 100 years. By 1939. 10 Solvay soda ash plants were in operation in 6 States throughout the nation. The Syracuse plant was officially closed Jan. 6, 1986, with total shutdown completed by Feb. 1986. Ironically, this facility was the first Solvay plant as well as the last. Other than the first Solvay plant beginning in 1884, the majority of US soda ash supplies during the 19th century came from imports. The remainder of the US supply

The design of slurry launders has usually been based on strictly empirical concepts. An examination of the most common procedures reveals that they do not account for many of the variables that are recognized as Significant for slurry transport. These may include flow rate, volume concentration of solids, solids specific gravity, solids size distribution particle shape, launder geometry, and roughness of the wetted surface. It was decided to develop a design procedure, which would accomplish two things: First: Take into consideration most of the known significant variables and systematize the procedure to assure consistent results. Second: Provide a rational basis for examining and utilizing operating data to refine and improve the system. To accomplish this, it was necessary to develop a basic design concept. This concept has been developed through a complex development history, and yet still appears workable and technically sound. That concept may be outlined as follows: First: The solids transport velocity is the fundamental basis for slurry launder design. Second: The stream configuration, hence the launder size, is integrated with the solids transport velocity so that the actual stream velocity exceeds the solids transport velocity. Third: The launder slope is that which will achieve the required actual stream velocity. It was originally planned to utilize a series of charts and nomographs for the design procedure. A nomograph, based on data given in Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing (1), was developed to determine the solids transport velocity. The velocity thus determined was used with Manning charts to determine the launder slope .and configuration as though the fluid were water. It was planned to utilize a "slope adjustment factor" to increase the slope to compensate for the apparent viscosity of the slurry. All attempts to develop a suitable correction factor failed. This failure was principally due to the complex relationship of viscosity to the required slope. It was then decided to revise the entire approach. Specifically, the present procedure is based on the Darcy-Weisbach flow equation, which is rationally preferable to the Manning equation. The Camp (2) equation is used for the solids transport velocity. The necessity of reference to the Moody curves for the Darcy friction factor is avoided by using the Colebrook and White (3) equation. The resulting mathematics require iterative solutions for several of the unknowns.

This paper discusses the ways in which the metals industries dealt with surplus capacity in the past, primarily the twenty years, 1950 - 1970. During this period, the bulk of metals production in the market-economy countries was controlled by private sector companies. Since then, public sector companies have played an increasingly important role in the metals industries of the market-economy countries. Of course, the change was not overnight. It occurred gradually over a period of many years. Indeed, by 1965, several developing nations had adopted policies of government control of metal operations previously in private hands. The metals industries are so many, so large and so diverse that the constraints of time make it impossible to deal with all segments. To illustrate the problems of surplus capacity in the metals industries during the period, this paper focusses primarily on three metals. One experienced rapid market expansion between 1950 and 1970; one had a growth more or less in line with the expansion of the world economy; and one lagged well behind the pace of industrial expansion. No one will be surprised if aluminum is identified as the metal with rapid growth; copper is identified as the metal that kept pace with the world economy; and tin is identified as the laggard. Individual computations of the rate of growth for these metals show some variations, but most estimates place the increase in aluminum consumption in the market economy countries between 1950 and 1970 at a compound annual rate of about 8%. The corresponding figure for copper is a compound rate of 4%. Tin consumption showed no growth. A widely accepted point of view is that sharply rising demand will force the price of a commodity to increase substantially in order to attract a necessary expansion of supply. The corollary to this is that stagnant demand will hold prices down, as there is no need to stimulate new supply and it may be necessary to force marginal producers out of the market. The experience with aluminum, copper and tin in the years 1950-1970 does not support this theory. In 1950, the average prices in the United States market as reported by the American Bureau of Metal Statistics were 17.74 a pound for aluminum, 21.24 a pound for copper, and 95.54 a pound for tin. The corresponding figures in 1970 were 28.74 a pound for aluminum, 57.74 a pound for copper and 174.24 a pound for tin. Aluminum, with the greatest market growth, rose by 60%, whereas tin rose 82% and copper by 172%. Clearly, other factors were a more important influence on price than was the trend of demand To revert now to the capacity issue, during the period under review aluminum demand was rising so sharply that that industry had no sustained problem with surplus capacity. Instead, if anything, capacity may at times have been a constraint on demand. The industry succeeded in attaining explosive market growth through imaginative research and promotion programs. Some of this growth was the result of substitution of aluminum for other commodities – steel, copper, wood and glass as examples. But much of the growth was the consequence of developing entirely new products through technological innovation. Prior to World War 11, the number of aluminum producers was extremely limited. Alcoa and Alcan in North American and Pechiney and Alusuisse in Europe were the dominant firms. The developing countries had virtually no production and in Japan and Germany production was only a small fraction of the North American output. During the War years the United States had financed the construction of many new facilities. After the war these plants were sold by the government to Reynolds and Kaiser in order to foster more competition in the market. Subsequently many other concerns became aluminum producers, both in the United States and elsewhere and competition for markets intensified.

A number of important studies, ongoing environment monitoring efforts and mining and road construction projects in the lignite based electrical power production area of Amyntaio ? Ptolemais in North West Greece require an accurate and up to date model of the topography. In recognition of the importance of such a model, a project was initiated by the Laboratory of Mining Information Technology and GIS Applications in the Department of Geotechnology and Environmental Engineering of the Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia. A massive surface triangulation model was generated from vector data using an optimized Delaunay based method. Combined with aerial and satellite imagery, the triangulation model provides a complete 3D terrain model of the area characterized by high levels of accuracy, detail and realism. The generated model is easy to modify with new data in order to improve its detail and keep it up to date with ongoing earth moving and development operations in the area.

The Prairie Creek intrusion, near Murfreesboro, Arkansas, is the site of the only commercial diamond mine in North America. Three major lithologies are associated with the intrusion, a hypabyssal peridotite, a volcanic breccia in .which the majority of diamonds occur, and associated tuff. Previous studies, including mining history, geological, geophysical, petrological and whole-rock and mineral chemistry are reviewed. The recent suggestion, by other workers, that this intrusion may be more correctly called a lamproite is examined and supported. This has serious implications for diamond exploration in Arkansas and elsewhere in the U.S.

Renewed interest in the vast reserves of anthracite coal in eastern Pennsylvania led to the use of a numerical model for simulating the hydrologic effects of constructing an open-pit anthracite mine. The proposed mine would be approximately 1800-m (5900-ft) long, 1000-m (3300-ft) wide, and 300-m (1000-ft) deep. A two-dimensional, finite-difference, ground-water flow model was used to calculate ground-water seepage rates into the proposed mine, to evaluate the effectiveness of various deep-well dewatering systems, to calculate drawdown in adjacent wells and properties, and to estimate the capacity of the water-treatment plant. Site-specific values of pertinent hydrogeologic parameters were used in the simulations.

At Fermilab, a 4000-ft long underground complex has recently been constructed for a high-energy physics experiment. The complex is sited up to 350 ft, below grade principally in bedrock. The rock excavations were mined by TBM and drill and blast methods and supported by a combination of rock bolts, dowels and shotcrete. Water control was achieved using a combination of pre- and post-excavation grouting, drainage systems, drip shielding and air desiccation measures.

The demand for thermal coal both nationally and internationally is projected to increase rapidly. The marketability of high ETU thermal coal produced in the USA is, however, limited by its high sulfur content. Fortunately, over 70 percent of the sulfur exists in pyritic form. The research conducted at Southern Illinois University indicates that over 90 percent of the pyrite can be removed by simple devices such as concentrating tables, cyclones, or froth flotation cells and the desulfurized coal can be blended with low sulfur western coal to produce EPA compliance coal. Thus, both the low BTU western coal and the high sulfur midwestern coal can be rendered competitive in the utility markets, here and abroad due to improved utilization.

Epithermal gold deposits occur in and near the marginal fault that circumscribes the Goldfield, Nevada, Tertiary caldera. The gold occurs disseminated in alunite, pyrite, and kaolin- bearing silicified zones that are controlled by the circular faults. Other Tertiary calderas (i.e., Summitville and Red Mountain No. 3) have epithermal disseminated gold deposits located in and near their marginal circular faults in settings that resemble the Goldfield example. These additional caldera- controlled epithermal gold deposits are also characterized by alunite, pyrite, and kaolin-bearing silicified rock that act as hosts for the gold disseminations. The Goldfield District is therefore an exploration model for those seeking disseminated epithermal gold deposits in a caldera setting.

The effects of postmining land use planning are addressed in this paper. These effects may include savings in reclamation costs and increased value of reclaimed land. However, this may result in greater planning costs and possible delays in production. Therefore, an economic analysis was undertaken in an effort to determine the importance of each potential result and to quantify the overall economic impact of postmining land use planning. A discounted cash flow analysis was performed using a surface mine cost model to analyze the sensitivity of selling price to changes in various postmining land use planning parameters. As a result of this analysis it was determined that the profitability of a project is most sensitive to delays in production, particularly, if the delay occurs after major investments have been made. Many methods have been proposed for evaluating postmining land use alternatives (Sweigard and Ramani, 1981). Both quantitative methods, such as benefit-cost analysis (Brock and Brooks, 1968), and nonquantitative methods have been proposed. The application of one specific analytical method is pursued in this paper.

Heavy media processes have been used for cleaning +28 mesh coals for a number of years, Two applications, i.e., the vessels and the cyclones are widely used in the U. S. for this purpose. The basic reason for the popularity of these systems is their extremely high efficiencies for particle sizes above 28 mesh, However, application of heavy media technology to fine coals below 28 mesh, has been limited due to the following reasons: o Inability to make size separations effectively at sizes below 28 mesh o Necessity of feeding large quantitites of magnetite to the separators o Difficulty of recovering magnetite in the presence of large quantities of coal o High levels of coal contamination in the recovered media, leading to high circulating loads and ineffective control of media gravity

Perhaps no other mineral commodities in this volume have as many uses as limestone and dolomite. These carbonate rocks are the basic building blocks of the construction industry, the material from which aggregate, cement, lime, and building stone are made. Carbonate rocks, and their derived products, are used as aggregates, fluxes, glass raw material, refractories, fillers, reactive agents in sulfur-oxide removal, abrasives, soil conditioners, ingredients in a host of chemical processes, and much more. Although the use of limestone and dolomite goes back before recorded history, new uses and products are continually being found. Carbonate rocks form about 15% of the earth's sedimentary crust and are widely available for exploitation. Found extensively on all continents, they are quarried and mined from formations that range in age from Precambrian to Holocene. Reserves of carbonate rock are large and will last indefinitely, although high-purity deposits may be absent or have limited availability in certain areas. Limestone and dolomite are so useful and so abundant that in 1989 about 798 Mt were produced in the United States. In fact, about 75% of all stone quarried or mined in the United States was carbonate rock. Sand and gravel was the only mineral commodity produced in greater quantity. In this chapter we have sought to provide the general reader an overview of carbonate rocks, their composition, distribution, production, and uses. The literature on the limestone and dolomite resources of the United States and Canada is so vast and diverse that one can easily become mired in print. We tried to list those references that are easily accessible and that provide the economic geologist with a starting point for more intensive study. The table listing selected references on limestone and dolomite resources in Canada and the United States reflects our attempt to be selective rather than exhaustive and to direct the reader to the best sources of detailed information.

A wide variety of materials have satisfactory to superior insulating properties and can be used to control the flow of heat, provide energy savings, improve personal comfort and contribute to personal safety. Such materials range from completely organic products--both of natural origin and synthetics--to completely inorganic. In many cases, thermal protective systems are actually combinations of both. Obviously, those insulating materials which are principally inorganic have the inherent advantages of low to minimal combustibility as well as utility at vastly elevated temperatures. Both of these properties are highly desirable in providing not only thermal energy conservation, but also personal safety in residential and commercial applications. As the thermal insulation needs of man and industry have developed, there has been an ever-increasing demand on the minerals industry to provide the resources required to fill these needs. On a global scale, industrial minerals have become the fundamental base upon which today's thermal insulation industry has been built. The use of minerals to control heat flow range from the most unsophisticated applications to those requiring the ultimate in scientific technology. In many cases the minerals are themselves converted in- to the major insulating media; for example, fiber glass, rock wool or refractory fiber. In other cases, minerals are used as the chemical reactants to form the binder matrix which in turn provides the product strength required for adequate handling and installation; for example, calcium silicate bonded products wherein the binder is the reaction product of lime and silica. In still other cases, low density mineral products are added to a high density binder System to provide lower weight and better insulating properties; for example, the use of expanded perlite in concrete.

With the goal of improving the strength characteristics of pneumatically emplaced material used for localized subsidence control, the binding additives: fly ash, bentonite, and Portland Cement, were examined for their effect on the support capabilities of coal refuse. It was found that, within certain concentration ranges, all three of them offered some increase in the ultimate strength of the backfilling mixture; however, Portland Cement gave the greatest percentage increases. Selection of the appropriate backfilling mixture will allow for the most economical and efficient subsidence control when pneumatic stowing is employed.
