Underground production of coal by longwall methods has increased significantly in the last few years and will very likely continue to: increase. There are several reasons for this. First, as mining moves into seams having greater overburden, roof exposure must be reduced since support will become' increasingly expensive. Secondly, the growing demand for coal has forced the coal industry to seek alternative, more productive, coal mining methods. In addition, the longwall method greatly simplifies the underground ventilation network. This paper addresses itself to the design of longwall development headings, particularly to those of the United States where multiple development headings are required by law. The most burdensome problem encountered in many longwall mining installations is deterioration of the tailgate due to the combined effect from, the active longwall gob and the old gob made by mining the previous panel.1 Portions of the tailgate entry are sometimes closed to such a degree that extensive repair work is necessary to keep the entry in usable condition. The purpose of this paper is to present the result of a study in progress which combines field measurements with numerical model analysis to reduce the cost of maintaining tailgate entries in longwall mining systems.

Processing of fine mineral particles in a slurry is a difficult problem. Methods to make fine particles magnetic have been developed recently and may offer a solution to this problem. Particles of nonmagnetic materials can be selectively rendered magnetic through surface interactions with magnetic reagents. When adsorption occurs, the magnetic susceptibility of the material is increased. Magnetic enhancement at several orders of magnitude can be achieved. Selectivity of the adsorption can be controlled by the functional groups of magnetic reagents and various surface interaction mechanisms. This approach allows a new degree of freedom for the processing of fine mineral particles, even with conventional magnetic means. Separation of valuable minerals and filtration of slimes from tailing ponds and recirculated water are examples of the applications. Basic principles of this technology are discussed in this study.

The new Tren Urbano heavy rail transit project in San Juan, Puerto Rico has one very significant part, the Río Piedras Contract, being constructed underground. This paper will give an overview of the tunneling work that started construction in1997. Design-Build procurement for tunneling is addressed. The new and modern transit system in San Juan will be 17.2 km (10.7 mi)long and have 16 stations in its first segment of construction, which is due to open in 2001. The line connects the city center district of Santurce to the outlying suburban municipality of Bayamón. All construction is being done under design-build contracts as a demonstration project funded by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The Río Piedras Contract is completely underground and involves practically all types of construction in soft ground. One station is built as cut-and-cover at the University of Puerto Rico. One portion has twin tunnels to be driven with an Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) and lined with one-pass precast concrete segments. Another has four short tunnel drives at a turnout that will be constructed with an initial support of shotcrete and lattice girders (i.e., the New Austrian Tunneling Method of construction). The most complex construction is the Río Piedras Station, which is being built as a stacked drift with a total of 15 individual tunnel drifts. After being sequentially excavated and concreted, they will form the arch of the 19 m (62 ft.) wide by 16 m (53 ft.) high cavern station. This structure is excavated in soil with less than 5 m (16 ft.) of cover to overlying historic buildings.

The Bureau of Mines has developed and tested a new concept of combining thermal and hydraulic energy processes for hard rock cutting. The study shows that this novel combination method overcomes the fragmentation limitations of the thermal process in nonspalling rocks and the cuttability limitations of the hydraulic process in high-strength rocks. The method effectively cuts hard rocks at moderate hydraulic pressures (below 30,000 psi). Theoretical predictions of the rock damage process are made and are correlated with experimental results obtained by using both single pulse and continuous water jet hydraulic systems. Traversing point heating and line heating techniques were used for heating rocks preceding the continuous jet impingement. Heating induces structural weakness of the rock material and assists fragmentation by the water jet impingement. The thermohydraulic process is effective if the significant depth of heat penetration induced by the surface heating exceeds the cutting depth produced by the jet impingement. Hydraulic specific fragmentation energy values reduce by about an order of magnitude using the combination technique. The process efficiency and the rate of themohydraulic hard rock cutting increases significantly by increasing the intensity and duration of heating.

The Japanese iron and steel industry has been developed remarkably, supported by the increase of steel demand. In particular, progress in various technical aspects of the ironmaking process, including burden materials, equipment, and operation has greatly contributed to the increase in productivity and the reduction of the fuel rate in blast furnaces. With the recent rise in the price of petroleum, the conversion of the energy source from oil to coke has resulted in a temporary increase in the fuel rate of blast furnaces.

During the early design stages of the San Manuel Concentrator, numerous questions were raised concerning the required slope for tailings pipelines. The tailings disposal area which had been selected was so situated, that an average down-slope of 5% existed. A gravity tailings disposal system was to be designed and it was necessary to determine the optimum pipeline slope for design purposes. This information was also necessary to determine the life of the available disposal areas before tailings pumping would be required. At approximately the same time as this problem arose, it was reported that a concentrator in the southwest was having considerable operational difficulties due to periodic plugging of tailings lines. These factors combined made it seem desirable to conduct some sort of test work which might give information concerning the flow characteristics of the tailings to be produced, from the San Manuel Concentrator. It was felt that the maximum information could be obtained if a tailings line could be erected which would allow for varying slopes, varying heads and accurate measurement of pulp velocity. A five-foot Denver Agitator was installed on a bank overlooking a cut for a rail- road track. Approximately 160 feet for new &-inch pipeline with victaulic connections was installed on low trestles along the track, with provisions made for varying the slope of the line by use of accurately constructed sets of shims, A valve discharge was installed on the tank so agitated pulp could be run into a standpipe at controlled volumes. This standpipe was 10 inches in diameter and approximately 5 feet high. A 4-inch nipple welded into the side of the standpipe approximately one inch from the bottom was connected to the 4-inch pipeline. At the discharge end of the 4-inch pipeline a launder arrangement was so constructed that the entire discharge could run into a pump sump or into 50-gallon measuring vessels. In normal operation the flow was from the agitator to the standpipe through the pipeline into the pump sump and from there pumped back to the agitator tank.

Continuing interest in processes that will effect separations in the fine particle size range has prompted intense interest in the use of high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) for beneficiation of uranium ores. Some of the uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by HGMS. This paper presents a brief review of the problems associated with uranium ores beneficiation, a description of the HGNS process, and the effects of the parameters--pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading and magnetic field gradient on product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGHS is related to ore specific properties such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix and interference of micron sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined.

The Lornex mine is located on the Southern slope of the Highland Valley in South Central British Columbia. The large low grade deposit was discovered in 1964; stripping began in 1970, and the mill started commercial production in October of 1972. The orebody is classified as a complex porphyry type having as major constituent quartz diorite, with varying amounts of quartz, grano diorite, and porphyry. A substantial degree of alteration is evident in the host rock, and this became the key factor in major equipment selection for the grinding section. A pilot plant was constructed on the property capable of treating 100 TPD of ore. The ore was mined to be as representative as possible of the entire orebody by sinking a shaft and cross cutting the deposit underground.

Laboratory and pilot scale tests have been made to deter- mine the utility of heavy media separation, particularly a cone type separator, as a means of recovering aluminum from shredded municipal solid waste. The effect of the method of shredding on the behavior of aluminum in a heavy media system was deter- mined. Two-stage pilot scale heavy media separations were made with size fractions of shredded refuse. Recoveries of aluminum, as well as other components of the refuse, were measured and medium losses were determined. The experimental results indicate that with certain reservations a heavy media cone system can be utilized for aluminum separation and recovery from shredded and air classified municipal solid waste. Observations made using two-stage heavy media separation in a drum unit are included. Qualitatively, the results from the two types of separators are similar.

The word "line" has been used loosely for many forms of the common steel plant flux. For example, many people use the word "lime" for nigh calcium and dolomitic limestone, for high calcium and dolomitic quicklime (also called caustic lime, calcined lime; burnt lime, pulverized and pebble lime) and ;van for clinkered dolomite. Calcium hydroxide, also called slaked lime and hydrated lime, is called "lime" but is seldom used as a flux except when the quicklime air slakes in open boxes or bins. All of the above forms of "lime" are used in the steel plant. Calcium hydroxide is used for water treatment, acid neutralizing, and as a lubricant for wire drawing. All the other limes are used as fluxes in the sintering plant, blast furnace or steel producing furnaces. In the production of self-flux or super-flux sinter, high calcium and dolomitic limestone fines are used. Where quicklime fines are available, they may be added to the sinter mix also. The blast furnace uses both high calcium and/or dolomitic limestone. A few trials have been made using iron oxide stabilized dolomitic lime in an attempt to reduce coke consumption and to increase the production rate. The trials were very successful but would' not be economical, except in periods of coke shortages, with resulting extremely high coke cost and exceptionally high hot metal demand.

A ground-support system for grizzly and haulage drifts was tested in Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel mine. Eight two-piece, wide- flange steel sets were erected in a ventilation drift on the 2315 grizzly level. The sets were lagged with three different materials and back- packed with pea gravel and sand. The pillar on either side of the drift support system was instrumented with stressmeters and rock-bolt load cells, the backfill with pressure cells, and the steel sets with load cells. Results indicate a better survival rate than with typical monolithic concrete.

The Carajás Hills are in Brazil's Eastern Amazon, between the Araguaia and Xingu rivers, and parallels 5° and 7° Latitude South. A location map is given in Fig. 1. It is an area of low mountains (maximum altitude 900 meters), covered by the Amazon rain forest. Annual average temperature is 25°C, ranging from 31°C (maximum) to 19°C (minimum). Annual rainfall averages 2,000mm. Although it rains throughout the whole year, heavy rains occur from December through March. At the beginning of the 20's, Brazilian explorationists made brief geological descriptions of the area. Due to the thick soil, scarce fresh rock outcrops and the tropical forest covering a completely unpopulated area, detailed geological studies were difficult and reconnaissance expeditions were limited to the river margins.

In a stream of ore in an underground mine or in a beneficiation plant bins are installed between machines or machine system. When the upstream machine is stopped the downstream machine can continue operation for a while and vice versa. The paper describes a procedure for calculating the total capacity of a system consisting of two machines with an intermediary bin as a function of the bin's live volume and of the installed machine capacities and their production variations, which are defined. Extensions to several machines in parallel and in series are shown as well as practical examples.

The need to modernise and increase the safety provision of older road tunnels raises challenges in maintaining the operation of the tunnel during such improvement works. The Mersey Kingsway twin road tunnels located in Liverpool UK, constructed in the late 1960s, have had three new cross passages constructed to allow emergency evacuation from one tunnel to the other tunnel and provide safer access for emergency services. The 3200m long road tunnels are lined with an unusual reinforced concrete steel-faced segmental lining with a paint finish. Construction of the cross passages occurred during night possessions with the tunnels returned to normal operation during the daytime. Constructed through water bearing sandstone and lined with precast concrete segments, the passages required advance ground treatment and support works. This paper presents the historical background to the Mersey Tunnels and describes the procurement strategy, design and construction approach adopted for these important safety improvements.

The Trombetas bauxite deposits were discovered by ALLAN, as from the original work of the geologists Drs. E. E. GREIG and 3.A. STAARGAARD on the axis of the Amazon river, between Manaus and Santarem - (see fig. 1). With research licences obtained in 1965 by the SANTA RITA BAUXITA - a subsidiary of ALAN a group of Brazilian geologists, under the supervision of IGOR MOUSASTICOUSHVILLY, begins researches on the areas of Parintins, Juruti and Mathias with unsatisfactory results. In 1966, photographs obtained from the US Air Force and the Brazilian Oil Company PETROBRAS -, covering an Amazon region between Parintins, Santarem and north of Trombetas river, permitted the identification of a great number of plateaux between the Nhamunda and the Trombetas rivers. Based on this information, a research group has worked intensively from 1966 to 1967 allowing the discovery of the trihydrated bauxite in a quite large area. After five years of intense work and analysis of approximately 56.000 samples, near 500 million of tonnes of bauxite are evaluated on the several plateaux of the, area, thus insuring the commercial exploration of these deposits. Such discovery places Brazil among the detainers of the main bauxite stocks of the world and as a potential exporter.

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. In-situ leaching, initiated in 1986 at San manual, was economically developed in 1989. The primary reason for this lag time between startup and viable production was the time required for technical development. The technical development pursued comprised detailed design, development, and implementation of in-situ well construction methods, formulation of suitable well pattern arrays, and the development of extensive hydrogeologic and geochemical knowledge of the mineral deposit. Since 1989, the in-situ leaching program has become a viable and cost effective method to extract copper from the supergene mineralized zone of the San Manuel deposit. The in-situ leaching methods that are currently utilized have been progressively expanded and continually developed and will became the cornerstone of copper production from the San Manuel oxide mineral deposit. This paper presents an overview of the supergene hydrogeology, current design techniques, drilling methods and well completion, pump determination and setting, solution management, and future plans for the increased extraction of copper by in-situ leaching methods at the San Manuel mine.

Exploration for sandstone-type uranium ore bodies which will be exploited using underground mining techniques is usually executed in sequential fashion. Geostatistical methods can be used at the earliest exploration stages to design drilling programs which have a high probability of success in the location and delineation of mineable ore-grade mineralization, should such mineralization exist. In succeeding development stages, geostatistics may be used to outline and define the potential grade of reserves and to apply confidence limits on the grade estimation. Delineation of mineable reserves for mine planning requires extensive development drilling; using such drilling data geostatistical methods may be used to minimize the drilling needed to achieve a desired level of confidence in the calculation of mineable uranium ore grade and tonnage. Because sandstone-type uranium deposits tend to be pod-shaped and are generally aligned along a mineralized trend, this paper proposes a geostatistical method of calculating uranium ore reserves which accounts for this fact and predicts the area within a trend which is underlain by ore. This method uses an indicator value; that is, drill holes which contain mineable ore-grade intercepts are coded as 1, those that do not are coded 0. The indicator may be kriged over the mineralized trend to obtain an estimate of the area underlain by ore. The thickness and grade-thickness may be kriged, and the average ore grade may then be obtained by dividing grade-thickness by thickness, as is conventional for stratabound deposits. The mean grade is then multiplied by the kriged mean thickness to obtain an estimate of the volume, and thence tonnage, of mineable ore within the trend.

As part of a general project to simulate a concentrator, the Brenda Mines Limited secondary crushing plant, located near Peachland, B. C., was sampled during the summer and winter of 1975 to develop a digital crushing plant simulator specific to the Brenda operation. The purpose of this simulator was to study the influence of manipulable process variables on important responses and to permit study of alternative circuit configurations if desired. This paper describes the simulation methodology employed and presents the results of a computer study of the secondary crushing plant (1).

The use of controlled recirculation can be dated back to the early 1930s. Although this method has been applied in many mines since then, a generalized comprehensive network analysis is still lacking. This paper presents a unique approach in which the ventilation network with a controlled district recirculation is divided into two subsystems: a main subsystem and a recirculation subsystem. The subsystems are analyzed individually and the results and their relationships are then integrated into discussions of the total ventilation system. The analysis of the recirculation subsystem is facilitated by introducing a non-dimensional parameter A, which represents the ratio of the air quantity for the working face to that for the subsystem. As a result, fan and regulator pressures and air power for various recirculation arrangements can be effectively expressed as a function of A and the subsystem air quantity. Numerical examples are included.
