A panel discussion on carbon-in-pulp processing of gold and silver ores was one of the highlights of the 1981 AIME Annual Meeting in Chicago. The session generated considerable interest and discussion among panelists and the audience. For those unable to attend the panel, the program was recorded and the discussion appears in this two-part report. The panel was co-chaired by Robert S. Shoemaker, vice president of San Francisco Mining Associates, and Laurence D. Hartzog, principal engineer with Bechtel Civil and Minerals Inc., San Francisco, CA. Panel members included: George Potter, consultant, Tucson, AZ; Kenneth B. Hall, metallurgical superintendent, Homestake Mining Co., Lead, SD; and Donald M. Duncan, resident manager, Pinson Mining Co., Winnemucca, NV. There have been several types of carbon-in-pulp adsorption vessels in use, such as the Dorr-type agitator, the simple propeller agitated tank, the Pachuca tank, and, lately, the draft tube-type of agitated tank. Which one of these is best and why? Potter: On the selection of the most appropriate adsorption vessel, there is a considerable difference of opinion that stems largely from the fact that every ore is different. The mesh of grind, the pulp solids, and the apparent viscosity of the pulp as caused by its clay content and chemical conditions all differ. The traditional Dorr agitator with the slow speed center sweep and either peripheral or center column air lifts has worked quite well on the finer grinds of all minus 65 and probably 70-80% minus 200 mesh. Pachuca tanks have also been successful and they may be capable of handling a coarser feed than the traditional Dorr tank. One uranium mill, for example, handles minus 28 mesh sandstone ore in a Pachuca. The most recent development and one that commands consideration is the draft tube agitator in which there is a turbine which closely fits inside a draft tube. Velocity in the tube is carefully calculated to avoid undue shear and thus abrasion of the carbon. The objective in all cases, of course, is to mix the granular carbon, which is typically 6 x 16 mesh, very gently but thoroughly in a slurry with minimum carbon abrasion. I do not know that there is one outstanding choice just yet and I have been unable so far to get information on C-I-P service for ore grinds as coarse as 35 mesh. Duncan: The major advantage of draft tube-type is the ease of startup. At the Pinson plant we installed draft tube-type agitators but it is too early to quote experience with them. We also haven't operated long enough to determine just what our carbon loss is. The advantage, of course, in the draft tube design is that it requires only about one-third the horsepower input of a conventional agitator. If it has no other advantages, it has that. Hall: The type of vessel most suitable for C-I-P adsorption depends on the type of ore treated and the prevailing operating conditions. In most cases, a deep tank with turbine-type mechanical agitator and low speed tip velocities would be satisfactory. Turbine-type impellers give a positive type of agitation which assures optimum ion contact and reduces short circuiting. Thorough aeration is possible with an air sparge properly located. A mechanical agitator can easily be started up after an outage, but it is usually necessary to drain and wash out a Dorr rake-type or Pachuca before restarting. The turbine-type impeller requires more power, but maintenance costs are negligible if rubber covered impellers are used. Carbon losses are minimal. In smaller plants, Pachuca type agitators provide adequate aeration and agitation. Bob Polak, Occidental Minerals (from the floor): Mr. Hall, you favor the mechanical-type agitator with the preface that the proper design is critical. Could you elaborate on this for us? Hall: The most important thing is low tip speed to prevent carbon attrition. I think the impeller should be sized so that you get a good sweeping action toward the bottom of the tank, across its bottom, up the sides, and back to the center. The advantage of the draft tube is that you get a more positive agitation and you probably get improved aeration too. Polak: Do you know of anyone using an upflow mechanical agitator rather than a downflow unit? Hall: I think that Bob Wilson at Custom Equipment has designed one where he has located the sparge directly beneath the impeller. The air bubbles are broken up by the impeller as the slurry passes through it. The slurry flows upward, outward, down the sides, and, again, back to the center of the tank. I don't know that any tanks of this design are in commercial use. Hans Von Michaelis, Randol International (from the floor): A question to any of the panelists on flat bottom versus conical bottom Pachucas. Hall: I would say the conical bottom would be most suitable in most cases. Some plants have experienced problems with flat bottom Pachucas in that they have a tendency to sand in on the sides of the tank so only the center of the tank is active. Duncan: With our draft tube tank we placed an inverted cone in the center of the tank bottom and blanked off the bottom comer around the circumference of the tank to facilitate movement of the pulp. Other than that, as far as conical bottom tanks are concerned, I'm generally opposed to them because of the cost and height differential. Larry Kramer, Kennecott Minerals Co. (from the floor): Mr. Duncan, you mentioned that the draft tube-type could be agitated with about one-third the horse-power applied to a conventional propellor agitated tank. I have trouble trying to pin down that kind of number. Could you give a bit of rationale as to why that mechanism has a lower horsepower requirement? Duncan: I think it has to do with the fact that below the propeller you have straightening vanes. The pulp, which is flowing vertically downward, is turned and flows upward again without any recirculation. You have an inherently less horse-power requirement in that type of tank. The one-third horsepower requirement is a number I obtained from Lightnin, which supplied us with details of the draft tube. There is probably much more recirculation with a conventional impeller type that is wasted motion. Potter: Last week I saw some agitators in South Africa with short draft tubes and actual turbine-type impellers. This plant was handling 200 kt of ore per month. The tanks were flat bottomed, and the agitation appeared to be quite satisfactory.

Oil and gas together are the most important energy sources consumed in the United States. In 1983, 67% of total energy consumption was represented by these two resources (43% was oil and 25% natural gas), while coal accounted for only 23% of U.S. energy use. All other sources (hydroelectric, nuclear, geothermal, wood and other waste products) accounted for only 10% (U.S. Department of Energy, 1983, p. 1). In this chapter we address the issue of regulation in the oil and natural gas sectors of the U.S. energy industry. In addition, we analyze the cartel characteristics of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). If OPEC is an effective cartel, then U.S. oil as well as substitute energy prices, production, and consumption will be affected by cartel action. Further, as the nation learned in the 1970s, major changes in oil prices produced major disturbances in other sectors of the U.S. and world economies. Consequently, it is important to determine whether the roughly ten-fold increase in nominal prices that occurred in the 1970s was the result of cartel action, the result of normal economic forces adjusting to the fact that the world was running out of cheap oil, or some combination of the two. Furthermore, the presence of OPEC- associated oil price increases is related to regulations that were imposed on the energy sector during the decade of the 70s. THE RATIONALE FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION Economists have traditionally judged the state of an economy to be efficient if it is impossible to improve the welfare of any one member of society without harming someone else. Any economy that satisfies this condition is said to be Pareto efficient, after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who first gave rigorous attention to such questions (see Chapter 4.10). It is easy to see why an economy that fails to satisfy this condition could not be efficient; by definition, it would be possible to alter the allocation of resources in a way that improves everyone's welfare.' Much of the appeal of this weak efficiency criterion is that it avoids comparisons of levels of well being among different individuals. The cost of such generality, however, is that in any given economic system a wide array of different Pareto efficient states will typically be attainable. In the simple Robinson Cursoe economy of the undergraduate textbook, for example, efficiency could just as easily be attained in the case where most of the island's resources are owned by Friday as in the case where they are under Crusoe's control. However, the distribution of welfare among the two inhabitants would obviously be quite different in the two situations. Such equity issues cannot be settled on objective or scientific grounds. To decide which distribution of welfare is socially "best" an explicit value judgment is needed. It is useful to keep in mind the preceding distinction between efficiency and equity issues when analyzing the role of government in a market economy. Decentralized market processes will not necessarily result in a distribution of welfare that society considers just. INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups: that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh (< 0.60 mm); in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < 8, in. (< 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1 to 2% in. (25 to 63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6X 1/14 in. (150X32 mm). The past decades has shown a steady increase in the tonnage of coal cleaned, 1 but it seems probable that the next decades will produce much wider applica- tion of deep coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. Since different cleaning processes work better with different ranges of coal size and the degree of cleaning possible is intimately connected with the size of coal, a systems design engineer will need as much information as possible concerning the size distributions produced by different types of machines and how these can be modified by different ways of operating the machines. In general, the following questions will be of concern: 1.What type of crusher or grinder is best, or most satisfactory, for reducing a given feed size and type of coal to a desired product size? Frequently, the desired product is smaller than some nominal size, but with as few fines as possible, or the fraction in some size range has to be as high as possible. 2. How big does the machine have to be for a given throughput rate? 3. How much electrical energy (or its equivalent) is required per ton of product? 4. How does the size distribution vary with change in throughput rate, and is a control scheme necessary or desirable? 5. Can the size distribution be readily varied if desired? 6. What is the optimum way to operate a machine in a given system? This section will emphasize certain general principles which guide us in answering these questions. Study has been carried out to apply fly ash as a high strength, water-resistant precast construction material through geopolymerization. Experiment results show that the working conditions such as water content, the concentration of NaOH, curing temperature and curing time, significantly affect the mechanical property of geopolymer matrix. Through optimization, an above 100 MPa compressive strength has been achieved with the geopolymerization products. Water soaking tests show that the geopolymerization product has a very high water resistance without losing noticeable compressive strength even after a one month soaking time. To elucidate the geopolymerization mechanism, microscopic techniques such as SEM/EDS and XRD are also applied to investigate the microstructure, the elemental and phase composition of geopolymerization products. The findings of the present work provide a novel method to apply fly ash as a high strength water-resistant precast construction material. INTRODUCTION Geopolymerization is a process of obtaining a polymeric structure from aluminosilicate by dissolving aluminosilicate sources in a strong alkali (NaOH) solution and condensation of free [SiO4] and [AlO4] tetrahedral units (Davidovits, 1985 and 1988; Duxson et al, 2005; Xu et al, 2000, 2002). After being cured at an elevated temperature for a specific time, the geopolymerization product shows a greatly increased compressive strength. Therefore, the product can be used as construction material such as bricks and road pavement. It provides a very promising method to apply aluminosilicate sources such as fly ash as a construction material for a sustainable development. Fly ash is a main industrial waste which needs to be carefully impounded because of its potential impact on environment. Many efforts have been tried to utilize fly ash as construction materials substituting Portland cement because of the following reasons. First, fly ash is a silica/alumina rich aluminosilicate source, which makes the specific material an ideal source for the geopolymerization process. Secondly, the particle size of fly ash is usually very small (< 50 microns) and it saves a lot of energy consumed during the production process of cement for grinding. Thirdly, fly ash is an ideal source for geopolymerization because it is reactive to alkali even at a mild temperature. In the past twenty years, many studies have been carried out on the geopolymerization of fly ash to a make construction material. However, there are some disadvantages associated with the conventional methods of treating fly ash (Palomo et al, 1999; Perera et al, 2007; Temuujin, et al, 2009; Hanjitsuwan et al, 2014). First, in most of the proposed geopolymerization methods, a salient amount of sodium silicate has to be added. It therefore makes it complex whether the achieved mechanical strength of geopolymerization products is due to a real geopolymerization process between fly ash and alkali or just largely the solidification of metal silicate in air at an elevated temperature. Secondly, the authors have noticed that when the geopolymerization product is soaked in water, the solution pH increases sharply and the products will lose its compressive strength gradually in water. Thirdly, the compressive strength of the geopolymerization product as reported is usually less than 50 MPa.

Borates are defined as &apos; &apos;salts or esters of boric acid; a compound containing the radical B203" (Bates and Jackson, 1987). Borates are defined by industry as any compound that contains or supplies boric oxide. A large number of minerals contain boric oxide, but the three that are the most important from a worldwide commercial standpoint are: borax, ulexite, and colemanite. These are produced in a limited number of countries (Fig. 1), dominated by the United States and Turkey, which together furnish about 90% of the world&apos;s borate supplies (Lyday, 1991). Production in the United States originates in the Mojave Desert of California; borax and kernite are mined by US Borax from its large deposit at Boron. Borate containing brines are pumped from Searles Lake by North American Chemical Co., and a limited amount of colemanite is mined by Newport Mineral Ventures from Death Valley. Turkish production is controlled by Etibank, the national mining enterprise, which supplies most of the commercially traded ulexite and colemanite from mines in the Bigadic and Emet Districts, plus borax from the huge deposit at Kirka. Borate minerals have been employed in a wide range of uses for many centuries, dating from at least the 8th century when they were used primarily as a flux for assaying and refining gold and silver. Their valuable properties and relative rarity soon stimulated international trade in borates; Marco Polo claimed to have trans- ported Chinese borate minerals from Tibet to Europe, and his home port of Venice was the center for borate imports and use throughout the Middle Ages (Travis and Cocks, 1984). Borates were traded at relatively high prices for highly specialized applications into the late years of the 19th century. At that time they were being used for medicines, food preservatives, ceramic glazes, and in expanded applications as metal fluxes. It was in that era that borax was discovered in Clear Lake, CA, and more significantly, the playa deposits of western Nevada were found and exploited by F.M. "Borax" Smith and others. Research and development by Smith&apos;s company began the evolution of borates from a high priced commodity with a few specialized uses to the relatively low priced chemical raw material used in large tonnages on a worldwide scale today. Borates are often defined and sold by their boric oxide or B,03 content, and most statistical data are listed in tons of B203. Of the products sold by the industry, borax pentahydrate or 5 mol and boric acid are the most commonly traded commodities. Boric acid plants are operated by all of the major borate producers. Glass fiber insulation is the major end use in the United States followed by textile glass fiber and borosilicate glass, detergents, and ceramics. Detergent usage continues to be a major end use in Europe.

The Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit Project is a 12 ft. 0 in. inside diameter—15 ft. 4 in. excavated diameter tunnel, 8,300 lf. in length. The tunnel is divided in two parts a 4,460 lf. reach to the West and a 3,770 lf. reach to the East separated by a flow regulation structure in the middle. The project was built for the City of Portland, Oregon Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) by the Frank Coluccio Construction Company (FCCC) Seattle, Washington under a $22,600,000.00 contract starting in 1998 and completing the contract in 2000 at a total cost to the City of $25,448,000. An increase of 12.6% from the original contract. The tunnel was constructed in an alluvial sediment that ranges up to 1,500 feet thick. The sediment varies from ?ne silty sand and sandy silt (SM-ML) to coarse sand and gravel (GP-GM) with varying quantities of cobbles and boulders. Most of the tunnel was constructed above the water table although one reach of almost 1,000 lf. had water to above the tunnel crown. The contractor, FCCC, used a Lovat 15 ft. 3 in.900 hp shielded TBM with multiple doors (4) of variable opening to excavate and support the tunnel. Tunnel supports were 5 in. WF 16 lbs. per foot at 4 ft. spacing and4 in. Douglas Fir lagging. Tunnel excavation was worked in 10 hour shifts with additional equipment maintenance and repair on the off time. The original Geotechnical Design Summary Report (GDSR) established a baseline for contractual purposes of slightly over 5 boulders (between 12 in. and48 in.) per foot of tunnel. (Table 1) At the pre-bid conference, three test pits were excavated to approximately tunnel invert, one at each end of the project and one in the middle near the flow regulation structure. The test pits encountered a few boulders but did not seem to support the five boulders per foot (varied from one boulder per foot of tunnel to eight b/lf.). Subsequent to the pre-bid meeting and the test pits, BES issued any addenda which changed the baseline boulder quantity in the GDSR to 1.7 boulders per foot of tunnel (varied from0.2 to 3.5 boulders per foot) a reduction of 67% from the original baseline. It is interesting to note the two separate tunnel reaches and how they were evaluated in the GDSR. Originally the Eastern portion of the work was projected at5.08 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 5.30 boulders per foot of tunnel for a variance of less than 5%. In the revised quantity the Eastern portion was projected at 2.01 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 1.42 boulders

In June 1997, Mount Polley Mining Corp., a division of Imperial Metals Corp., completed an 18-kt/d (20,000 stpd) gold-copper mine in central British Columbia. Fast-track construction and extensive off-site construction were combined with an aggressive project schedule to build the mine in one year. This was three months ahead of schedule and 7% below the original budgeted cost of C$123.5 million (US$86 million). The Mount Polley Mine was the first of a crop of new open-pit mines in British Columbia. The Mount Polley deposit has been explored since the mid-1960s when it was known as the Cariboo Bell property. From 1988, Imperial Metals completed drilling and metallurgical testing on the deposit. This led to a positive feasibility study and the issuing of a Mine Development Certificate in 1991. The project was later shelved due to falling metals prices and the strength of the Canadian dollar. In late 1994, Imperial merged with Bethlehem Resources Corp., bringing a strong project team to the company. The deposit was then re-evaluated, ore reserves revised and additional metallurgical testing was performed. The result was a revised project plan. It indi¬cated that a financially feasible gold-copper mining op¬eration could be constructed at Mount Polley operat¬ing at 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). In May 1996, an agreement was reached with Sumitomo to jointly fund and develop the project. By early 1996, final plans and permits were being prepared for construction, scheduled to begin in June 1.996. On-site work commenced on May 28th, 1996 following lifting of the road restrictions. Mount Polley Mining acted as its own project manager. Construction was completed in June 1997. Plant runup took place in July and full production began in August. Through the use of off-site construction and the careful selection of contractors who cooperated to complete some 12 major contracts, it was possible to reduce the mine and mill construction time from 16 to 13 months. Off-site construction for all possible aspects of the work and the use of used milling equipment allowed significant savings in overall capital costs of construction. Total costs for the mine, mill and tailings dam equated to C$6,100/t/d of throughput. The mill design incorporates several innovative features that will aid maintenance and allow flexibility of operation. The operation is designed as a closed system and meets the latest environmental standards. Concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Vancouver. Revenues for the mine come from the mine&apos;s production of about 3.1 t/a (100,000 oz/year) of gold and 10.8 kt/a (24 million lbs/year) of copper during the first four years of the 12-year mine life.

Maintenance and inventory are usually the last items considered in mine development. They need to be addressed properly and early. The micro-computer brings sophistication within the reach of even the smallest mines. Maintenance and inventory programs, if properly installed, will reduce costs 15 to 25% and allow management time to address the mining and metallurgical problems at start up. Shops and warehouses are rarely designed properly. Large engineering firms spend 5 to 20 times more than is necessary for first class facilities. There is an optimum design, size, and layout. Take the time necessary to assure you get the right people, programs, and facilities in that order. Maintenance, inventory, and inventory control must be addressed early if a small mine is to have a chance at optimizing costs during the first two years of operation. This is hard work and is usually put on the back burner until the mine is in some degree of trouble. Hiring an experienced maintenance superintendent is important but it is not the complete solution. Maintenance systems, design of facilities, and use of computers are not skills that maintenance people usually have. In addition, the work of ordering spare parts and working with erection people is a full time job and any maintenance people on site during construction are quickly recruited. The end result is that few mines start up with an adequate Maintenance or Inventory System in place. The months, and in some cases years, that the mine attempts to operate without a system are both painful and expensive. Designs of successful integrated maintenance and inventory programs are virtually 100% supported with some outside assistance. Our system is the approach that we are most familiar with and this paper will isolate how Rushton International would go about setting up systems and designing support facilities. Micro-computers are the only way for a small mine to go. ~ini-computers cost more originally and operating costs are many times higher than even the most sophisticated micro system. Micro- computer software is developed further and recent advances in hardware makes medium priced units equal to most mini&apos;s in RAW COMPUTER POWER. Mines in general, and especially small mines, have no need for main frame power. MAINTENANCE A good maintenance program has: 1. Equipment Master List a. Equipment Detail Reports 2. Work Order and Backlog Control Program 3. Component Control Program 4. Tire Program 5. Wear Materials Program 6. PM Control Program 7. Maintenance History Program 8. Performance Program We also track miscellaneous items such as MSHA training and inspections, timekeeping, etc. Rather than going through the program step-by-step, it makes more sense to go through a typical Maintenance Day and show how the programs are used. Introduction Until recently, there were many jobs for mineral engineering graduates. Traditionally, minerals-related career paths available to university graduates stem from rather standard offerings in the disciplines of mining, metallurgy, petroleum, geology, geophysical engineering, and mineral economics. Within each discipline, there exists many career opportunities. In fact, until fairly recently, the most difficult decision for most graduates was choosing among all the available alternatives. Unfortunately, this relative state of euphoria changed quickly and dramatically within the minerals sector. Within two or three years, graduates from minerals-related engineering disciplines found it exceedingly difficult - and then almost impossible - to secure employment in the minerals sector upon graduation. At the same time, there were dramatic reductions in production requirements and, ultimately, mine closings. This resulted in massive layoffs and often termination of professional personnel possessing significant and valuable industrial experience. Obviously, this worsened an already bad employment picture for those hoping to begin a career in minerals. Certainly, there is no universal agreement on what the future offers for the US minerals industry or the career opportunities associated with it. However, there are a number of considerations that deserve study by students, faculty, administrators, and industrial personnel before minerals-related career paths are chosen. Where Will the Jobs Be and How Many? Everyone is aware that the minerals industry is very cyclic. It is not surprising then that job opportunities for new graduates also fluctuate. Typically, there is a two-to-four year lag between industry&apos;s engineering manpower needs and the academic community&apos;s ability to produce this talent. Due to the response lag, there will necessarily be years when supply and demand do not match. Employment Projections It is extremely difficult to anticipate what the key career paths might be within the next few years. Considerable speculation remains with respect to whether activity in the US minerals sector over the short-, intermediate-, and long-term will improve, remain status quo, or further deteriorate. However, some information pertaining to the prospects for career opportunities in mining engineering was offered by Tingley and Ghose (ME, Sept. 1983, p. 1274) from a study performed by Fenvessy and Schwab. Results from this industry-sponsored survey suggest that the US will experience 700 more mining engineers than needed in 1985, 1300 in 1990, and 1800 in the year 2000. These conclusions were based on the assumptions that future graduate levels remain flat and demand increases 3.6% annually. Educators quickly argued that depressed job markets, coupled with university student mobility, would negate the assumption of flat mining graduate levels in the immediate future. Student Mobility Student mobility from one engineering discipline to another is high. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the tremendous growth in programs such as computer engineering and computer science at the expense of enrollments in the more traditional engineering programs. The ability and willingness of students to quickly change engineering disciplines in response to existing and perceived job market demands have created significant student, faculty, and resource dislocations within universities nationwide. The oil and gas drilling industry is the largest user of "functional" industrial minerals for well drilling and completion. (Functional industrial minerals can be defined as those used for performance characteristics rather than composition.) This industry&apos;s use of industrial minerals involves complex mining, processing, and distribution of products. The cost of these products at the well site reflects the complexity of distribution to typically remote locations and the cost of service. Table 1 illustrates the use of functional industrial minerals by the drilling industry. The total tonnage shown is almost 2 1/2 times larger than the 3.3 Mt (3.6 million st) of kaolin used by the paper industry for filling and coating, another major use for functional industrial minerals. Drilling fluids are an indispensible part of a drilling operation. These fluids perform several functions simultaneously. They cool and lubricate the drill bit, remove formation cuttings, increase the specific gravity of the fluid to counteract formation fluid pressures, provide a filter cake on the wall of the drill hole to prevent drilling fluid loss to the formation, protect the porosity of producing zones, and prevent reaction of the formation or formation fluids with the drilling mud. When porosity of a formation exceeds the ability of the drilling fluid to form a wall cake, it is referred to as lost circulation. Because these fluids are being constantly formulated for changing formation conditions, they require a skilled technician or drilling mud engineer on the site at all times. Drilling fluids are composed of oil or water as the liquid phase, and industrial mineral products and chemicals to control chemical and physical properties. The basic function of viscosity and suspension result from the use of gelling clays and chemical and mineral dispersants; specific gravity of the mud is adjusted with mineral weighting agents; filtration control is maintained by clays and various natural and synthetic polymers; platey minerals and scrap products are used for controlling lost circulation in porous or fractured zones; salts are added to the mud to inhibit shale and clay swelling; chemicals are added for pH adjustment, prevention of corrosion, and as scavengers for formation fluid components. Because of the clay component, drilling muds have rheological properties different from conventional fluids, behaving as Bingham plastic fluids as opposed to the Newtonian behavior of water and oil. Newtonian fluids will begin to flow with the application of any force, however small. Bingham plastic fluids require a finite force or shear stress (yield value) before flow begins. Thixotropy is another property of clay-based drilling fluids. At rest they form a gel structure that suspends the weighting agents and rock cuttings. These gels break down when a finite force is applied and circulation is restored. At the bit where shear rates are the greatest, the viscosity or resistance to flow decreases, so hydraulic pressures and pumping costs are minimized. A drilling rig provides a means of rotating a hollow pipe attached to a cutting bit. A mud pit or tank is used for mixing the drilling mud and its components. The recent recession has severely impacted the performance and results of virtually all of our natural resource companies. The depressing climate continues to linger and recovery maybe sometime away. Problems remain for resource companies in the steel and petroleum industries as well as the mining business. In February, at the AIME Annual Meeting in New York, an All-Institute session presented a variety of views on the situation. A. T. Yu, chairman of ORBA Corp., Mountain Lakes, NJ, organized presentations by top management personnel of four natural resource companies. This well attended session heard management strategems for the present and views for the future. A compilation and synthesis of these presentations, gathered by Dr. Yu, are presented here for ME readers. Leading off will be William A. Griffith, president and chief executive officer of Hecla Mining Co., Wallace, ID. Other speakers presented here include Wilfred P. Schmoe, executive vice president of Du Pont Co., Wilmington, DE; Frank W. Luerssen, chairman and chief executive officer of Inland Steel Co., Chicago, IL; and Adam H. Zimmerman, president and chief operating officer of Noranda Mines Ltd., Toronto, Ontario. First, then Griffith&apos;s remarks. Introduction The key to successfully managing a natural resource company in austere times is good management in good times. In other words, position the company during prosperous times to survive the times when the well dries up. Although we know how to manage properly, for various reasons we sometimes do not do it. We forget the lessons of history. We allow ourselves to be carried away by our egos. We fail to position our companies properly in good times. As a result, in bad times we find ourselves in deep trouble. We need constant reeducation in the things we already know. In the natural resource industries, proper positioning in good times involves becoming a low-cost producer, retaining the flexibility to pull in our horns, developing a lean and effective organization, and maintaining a healthy balance sheet. Nothing improves the chance of survival during austere times as much as being able to produce at a lower cost than your competitors. In our business, that means having low-cost mines - low cost because the ore bodies are high grade or favorably located, and because they are efficiently operated. It also means recognizing the competition. The key numbers are the cost to produce an ounce of silver or gold. Nothing else really counts. And our competition is every other precious metal mine in the world. Flexibility is important when one gets stuck with a high-cost operation, often because things do not work out as we expect. It is important to be able to shut down an operation quickly and easily, without high holding costs, and without disrupting the corporate organization. A lean and mean, effective organization of competent people is vital during bad times. A company will not have that if it is not developed and maintained during good times. Finally, a natural resource company has to develop a healthy balance sheet during good times if it is to survive the bad. Money in the

I was very glad to see an article on alkali-silica reactivity of concrete aggregate in Mining Engineering. It is a topic that should be reexamined every 45 or 50 years. The last paper (that I am aware of) that examined this topic in Mining Engineering was Rexford (1950), who, at the time, was chief of the Petrography Section, South Pacific Division Laboratory, Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles, CA. The paper was presented at the AIME meeting in Los Angeles in October 1948. Professor Leming&apos;s discussion generally reflects the current state-of-the-art; but it provides no references for more detailed information. I wrote a paper titled "How to avoid excessive expansion of concrete due to alkali-aggregate reaction," which was included in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reactions in Hydroelectric Plants and Dams (Mather, 1995). In it, I emphasized that it was the hydroxide ion (not the alkali ion) that caused the pore fluid in the concrete to dissolve reactive silica, producing alkali-silica gel capable of taking up water, thereby, causing swelling and rupturing of the concrete. Excessive expansion will not occur unless there is a sufficient amount of potentially expansive alkali-silica reaction product and water. However, this will not occur unless there is a sufficient quantity of reactive aggregate and unless there is a mechanism by which the pH of the pore fluid can get well above the normal value of about 12.6. In many cases it is sufficient that the cementitious medium not only contains portland cement but also contains ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) or a pozzolan such as fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, volcanic glass or calcined shale - any of which may have been included for economic reasons. If, however, the person selecting the ingredients for concrete knows that the aggregate is reactive (with no alternate nonreactive aggregate available) and if the person knows that the only available portland cement has a high alkali content (i.e., more than 0.6% Na2O.; Na2e = % Na20 + 0.658 x % K20), then it becomes irresponsible not to establish what reasonable precaution one should take. Professor Leming suggests using one of the following: 30% Class F fly ash, 50% GGBFS or 7% to 10% silica fume. My view is that one should prepare test specimens with the cement and aggregate to be used and then expose these both with and without at least two dosages of each of the various alternative materials (slag, pozzolan and lithium salts), so that the required dosage. to control the expansion is established. Then, economic considerations can dictate the final selection. I would point out to the author that GGBFS is not a pozzolan and is not an admixture, but, rather, it is a latent hydraulic cement. An admixture is, by definition, a material other than hydraulic cement. I commend him for suggesting that aggregate producers should become more active in knowing about the reactivity of their products and the precautions needed to permit those products to be safely used in concrete.

The microtunneling test program is one of three main elements of the research project, "Trenchless Construction: Evaluation of Methods and Materials to Install and Rehabilitate Underground Utilities." The other elements of this project include an evaluation and demonstration of horizontal directional drilling technology and pipeline rehabilitation systems. The research is a Corps and Industry cost-shared project funded under the Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) program. The laboratory partner is the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Geotechnical Laboratory. The industry partner is the Louisiana Tech University&apos;s Trenchless Technology Center. Industry participants are contributing over half the total cost of this research. The overall objective of the CPAR program is to improve productivity in the U.S. construction industry, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the U.S. industry in domestic and overseas markets. The Corps and other federal and state agencies will benefit by realizing reduced costs, enhanced safety and better products and services as the products of this research program are developed, tested, and pushed into the market place. The microtunneling demonstrations and evaluations were performed during September and October 1992 at a specially constructed test facility built at WES in Vicksburg, MS. The test facility is 104 m (340-ft) long, 5 m (16-ft) wide, and 4 m (13-ft) deep. It was constructed, ironically, by first excavating a trench into which 6 different types of soils were placed and compacted in approximately 18.3 m (60-ft) long sections. The soil profiles include a lean silty clay (loess), a dry sand, highly plastic buckshot clay, wet sand, clay gravel and silt. The interfaces between soil profiles were sloped to simulate mixed face conditions as the machines exit one zone and enter another, and provided challenges to ground control and alignment and grade control during these transitions. Moisture and density tests were performed on all materials in each lift to assure uniformity. Horizontal inclinometers and 3 levels of settlement plates were installed at key locations in the test bed. The settlement plates and rods and the horizontal inclinometers, together with surface survey points, provided data to evaluate settlement and heave along the test section. Penetration resistance was measured in each section of the completed test bed. Strain gages were installed in 8 of the 0.6 m (24 in.) diam. Hobas pipe sections to measure strains in the pipe as it was being jacked into place. Steering jack loads, jacking thrust loads, and cutterhead torque were also measured during the drives. The results of these tests will be used together with other information to develop guidelines for conducting feasibility studies and selecting proper methods compatible with anticipated conditions.

"The mining environment presents challenging and complex situations for the application of medical care. The combination of remote locations, difficult access and longer response times may create an increase in morbidity and mortality in the event of serious accidents. The U.S Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has only minimal requirements of first aid training for mine workers. For mine rescue team members, MSHA requires medical training at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level, as only prescribed by mine rescue contest rules. This paper examines, based on mine accident statistical information, whether a higher level of medical training, for example at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level can better address injuries most commonly disabling or leading to the death of miners in the United States. BACKGROUND Prehospital emergency medical care for the sick and injured has evolved considerably from first inception. Ambulances used to be staffed by persons with little training and equipment and prehospital care was focused largely on the rapid transport of the injured person to a hospital and. The modern prehospital care model was initially developed in military applications, where medics were responsible for some treatment on the battlefield and rapid transport to the care of a physician. In 1965, the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock published Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society (National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock, 1966). This white paper laid out the consequences of the insufficiency of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) in the United States at that time. According to this paper, in 1965, 107,000 people were killed from accidental injury, with another 400,000 injured with permanent disability. The authors estimated that approximately 50% of ambulance services were provided by local morticians that were not capable of rendering advanced life support. The paper states that, based on experiences in the Vietnam war, seriously wounded soldiers had a better chance of survival in the battle field compared to traffic accident victims with similar traumatic injuries because the military was capable of providing first aid and efficient transportation to emergency care facilities. The white paper states that death rates from battle injuries declined significantly from 8% in World War I to 2% in Vietnam. The publication of this white paper is credited for the broad evolution and rapid advance of the civilian EMS system after 1965. It eventually lead to the creation of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Standard Curricula (NSC) for emergency medical care in 1985. Training, and therefore required skill and knowledge for prehospital emergency care has continued to grow to reach the current standard."

The US minerals industry, as well we know, has been hit hard by the recent recession and is faced with what is projected to be a slow recovery. Even so, there was an underlying feeling of optimism at American Mining Congress&apos; International Mining Show in Las Vegas, NV, Oct 11-14. More than 25,000 people attended during a particularly rough financial year, dispelling fears that attendance would dip sharply below 1978&apos;s 30,000 plus tally. The equipment expositionheld every four years-was the largest show of its kind this year in the Western Hemisphere in terms of exhibit space, providing an extensive view of mining-related equipment. In addition to the nearly 700 exhibits occupying more than 445 hm2 (11 acres), 20 technical sessions were held covering topics ranging from minerals availability and the state of the mining industries to communications, computers, and accounting. Government officials were well represented, with six US senators and five US representatives participating in various convention functions. Sen. Paul Laxalt (R-NV) was the keynote speaker at the welcoming luncheon. Other senators involved in the show included Howard W. Cannon (D-NV), Pete V. Domenici (R-NM), James A. McClure (R-ID), Frank H. Murkowski (R-AK), and Steven D. Symms (R-ID). Representatives on the program were Joseph M. Gaydos (D-PA), Guy Vander Jagt (R-MI), Don Young (R-AK), Jim Santini (D-NV), and Ceil Heftel (D-HI). There were also many international vistors at the show, including exhibitors from Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Finland, Sweden, South Africa, and West Germany. Equipment Highlights Equipment and services featured at the exposition ranged from aerial mapping to wire rope. Aisle space alone between exhibits exceeded 8 km (5 miles). And the companies represented ranged from small businesses to large corporations. Some of the company products described here are representative of the many exhibitors in attendance. Atlas Copco&apos;s extensive display of rock drilling and tunnel and shaft boring equipment featured its Boomer H-201, the newest addition to its line of underground drifting rigs; the ROC 306, a new track-mounted, high pressure down-the-hole drill rig; a new hydraulic surface crawler drill, the ROC 712H, designed for small and medium-size holes in quarries and small open-pit mines; a computerized analysis system, CARE (see page 1570), designed to project productivity and operating costs for various mining operations; several electro-hydraulic loaders, including the new rail bound LM E60 and LM E80, and two Hagg-loaders-the 7HR and 10HR-that use two digging arms to rake and guide muck; a mechanized blasthole charging system; rock bolting equipment and its new Swellex roof bolting method; Sandvik Coromant drill steel and bits; and its new Jarva R200 raise boring machine.

Open-pit mines in the US and throughout the world are typically characterized by increasing operating costs and decreasing ore grades. Thus, companies must continue to improve their use of human and technological resources to remain competitive in the marketplace. Duval Corp. has historically been very sensitive to mining costs, in part because of relatively low grade copper-molybdenum ore bodies. These concerns have resulted in three haulage system generations at the 218 kt/d (240,000 stpd) Sierrita-Esperanza open-pit mine south of Tucson, AZ. Each generation has exceeded the performance of the one replaced. The latest system of portable crushers and conveyors reduces hauling costs by combining both hardware and technique. Savings are achieved not only bysubstituting conveyors for haul trucks, but also by permitting the crusher-convey or system to closely follow mining as the pit deepens and/or mining areas change location. The Duval system is capable of easy and inexpensive relocation in varying site configurations in relatively short time periods. Its implementation in active mining areas results in minimum disruption to both the mine operation and mine design. This haulage concept allows the mining engineer maximum freedom to design an open pit for profit rather than for equipment. Maximum savings with a portable system are achieved by minimizing truck haulage costs. At Sierrita, for example, the yearly estimated operating cost savings for each thousand feet of +10% truck ramp replaced by conveyors is about $1 million per portable crusher. A savings of $30 million could be achieved fora three-portable system overa 10 year period simply by reducing the average truck Iiftto the crusher by 30 m (100 ft), There is also the added capital expense of buying trucks to cover the additional 30 m (100 ft) of lift. Relocation costs are an important consideration in a portable system. Direct costs can become a significant operating expense if frequent relocations are necessary to take full advantage of potential haulage cost savings. A site preparation cost of $375,000, for example, would add an additional operating cost of 2.8¢/t(2.5¢/st) for a system handling 13.6 Mt/a (15 million stpy), assuming one move a year, In addition to the direct cost of site preparation, such as installation of retaining walls, apron feeder slots, and equipment pads, there is the cost of site renovation after abandonment. Indirect relocation costs, while less tangible and more dependent on specific mine design and scheduling, can be of significance. A slowdown in the mining rate or a less efficient mining plan can result from a site not being immediately available for mining after abandonment. Conversely, mining in narrow areas can be adversely affected if two or three month lead times are required for site preparation.

Gold Fields Mining Corporation started processing ore from it&apos;s Chimney Creek operation in northern Nevada in November, 1987. Since that time production has averaged about 200,000 ounces per year from the milling and dump leaching circuits combined. The events that led up to commissioning of the plant started in January of 1985 when the Gold Fields exploration team drilled their first hole in an area now known as Discovery Hill. The major orebody was located later in the year in what is currently the major focus of activity, the North Pit. Subsequent drilling since plant startup has found another 14 million tons of ore two miles south of the original orebody. This South Pit orebody is currently being stripped and metallurgical testing is underway. Engineering Engineering on the Chimney Creek plant started in earnest in May, 1986. Davy McKee Corporation from San Ramon, California, did both the engineering and the construction management. Before engineering began the entire senior staff of the Plant Department was hired and assigned to the project. Senior staff included the Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist. Gold Fields does not employ an internal central engineering staff to design their plants. We feel that the people who design the plant should be the ones who will be required to run it once it has been commissioned. This philosophy affords a continuous accountability from start of design through commissioning and operations. All four of the senior staff spent the most critical phase of the engineering stage at Davy McKee, so the plant is truly a reflection of all four disciplines. In bringing on the Maintenance General Foreman from the start, there was a focus placed on ease of maintaining the plant. Another philosophy that was adopted from the start was that the plant be easy to work in and maintain for both operators and maintenance personnel. Numerous design criteria were given to Davy McKee to ensure this. For example, we required that every piece of equipment could be reached easily with a crane or fork lift. All conveyors were required to have walkways on both sides for ease of maintenance and a minimum of 30 inches of clearance under them for ease of cleanup. Visibility for operators was considered very important and the control rooms and general plant layout were designed with this in mind. A list of about 100 general rules were given to Davy McKee during the early layout meetings and these were held as the general design criteria throughout engineering and construction. While engineering was progressing in San Ramon, California, dump leach test work was being done at the site. Three 6 foot diameter fiberglass columns were constructed and filled to a 20 foot height with low grade ore. Leaching characteristics were determined and the dump leach design was based on information collected from these columns. Construction The major contractors on the project were The Industrial Company for the bulk of the piping and structural, EMKO on the electrical/ instrumentation and Hunewill for most of the earth work and leach pad construction. All plant operating and maintenance personnel were employed eight weeks before startup for intensive training. Instructors were Gold Fields personnel, including foremen, and Davy McKee engineers. On occasion, selected suppliers representatives were brought in to discuss major pieces of equipment. Project completion was targeted for January, 1988 at a projected cost of 78.9 million dollars. Actual startup was about 1 1/2 months ahead of schedule and slightly under budget. Full design capacity was achieved the first full month of operation. Crushing Run of mine ore is delivered to the crusher and dumped into a 90 ton hopper which is topped with a 30" X 30" opening stationary grizzly. The Alligator Ridge mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Ely, NV. The deposit was discovered in 1976 by a lone prospector working under a grubstake contract for Amselco Minerals Inc. Evaluation of mine potential proceeded quickly. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility and mine design studies by the end of 1978. Mine construction began in early 1980. By September of that year, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold was poured a few months later. Alligator Ridge is designed to produce 1.9 t (60,000 oz) of gold each year. The projected mine life, based on proven reserves, is to mid-1988. However, Amselco is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine&apos;s life. Amselco, a subsidiary of the British Petroleum Co., is based in Denver, CO. The company is mine operator and jointly owns the project with Nerco Minerals Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light. Alligator Ridge is Amselco&apos;s first US mining operation. Geology Alligator Ridge, so named because it appears in outline to be an alligator at rest, contains disseminated micron gold embedded in iron-streaked siltstones. Although definitive conclusions have not been drawn on age and origin, the gold ore bodies are probably young by geological standards. They were formed in a recent volcanic period still evidenced in parts of Nevada by geysers and hot springs. As these superheated solutions rose through the permeable siltstones, they deposited minerals in the rock and formed the present gold ore bodies. During 1977, an extensive soil geochemical sampling program with additional geologic mapping and outcrop sampling were conducted. The results generated several drill targets. Initial drilling was performed in November and December 1977, and ore grade mineralization was encountered in the first drill hole. The Alligator Ridge mine is unusual in relation to other and more recent western US mineral discoveries in that it occupies an area that had no previous mining history. The ore deposits are hosted in upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that consist predominantly of a thick carbonate sequence. The main ore host is the Devonian-Mississippian Pilot shale, which occurs locally as a sequence of thin bedded calcareous, carbonaceous siltstones and claystones. The maximum observed thickness of the Pilot section in the mine area is about 140 m (460 ft). Rocks in the Alligator Ridge area have been folded into a series of low amplitude anticlines and synclines that strike north-south and plunge to the south at about 20°, with limbs that dip nearly 20°. The folds have been truncated and deformed by later high-angle faults that generally strike northwest. Although multiple stages of movement are evident on the fault systems, the youngest period of activity is along the major northeast trend. The predominant structural pattern in the area is of the basin- and range-type high angle normal faults. Alligator Ridge is actually a horst block between two basin and range faults. Vantage Ore Deposits There are three principal ore deposits within the Vantage Basin and several smaller satellite mineralized areas. The three Vantage deposits are encompassed in a mineralized zone that covers an area 915 m (3,000 ft) long and 305 m (1,000 ft) wide. All mineralized zones have been outlined by more than 600 rotary drill holes, with an average depth of 150 m (500 ft). Mineralization occurs in both carbonaceous and oxidized rocks. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is not amenable to current heap leaching practice. Therefore, only oxidized ores are now treated. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is segregated and stockpiled as it is encountered during mining. The three ore bodies occur along a north-northeast strike, with mineralization becoming progressively deeper from north to south. The ore block dimen-

Two major events highlight recent developments in US ore and coal ports: completion of the last series of modern taconite pellet transshipment facilities on the Great Lakes; and modernization and construction of coal ports, particularly on the East and Gulf Coasts. The New Taconite Transportation System To reduce raw material transportation costs, a fleet of new generation high-capacity 304-m (1,000-ft) self-unloading vessels were built to carry iron ore pellets from the Minnesota-Michigan iron ranges to the steel plants on the lower Great Lakes. Existing port facilities had to be modernized, revised, or completely rebuilt to accommodate these large vessels. Some of these were Burlington Northern&apos;s Allouez, WI, loading dock; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co.&apos;s Two Harbors, MN, facility; Republic Steel&apos;s Lorain, OH, facility; and Chessie&apos;s Toledo, OH, dock. Allouez and Two Harbors receive taconite pellets from unit trains and load them onto large vessels either after dumping or via a large stockpile and reclaim system. The Lorain facility receives iron ore pellets from self-unloading vessels&apos; discharge boom conveyor and reloads the pellets into rail cars or small vessels destined to inland steel mills. The Toledo facility receives Armco pellets from vessels, stockpiles them through the winter, and reloads into unit trains destined for Armco&apos;s mills along Chessie&apos;s rail tracks. Burlington Northern&apos;s $75-million Allouez pellet dock, completed in June 1977, was built to receive pellets produced by Hibbing Taconite Co. and National Pellet Plant in Minnesota, stockpile them through the winter when the lakes are frozen, and load them into 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels in the shipping season. As much as 10 Mt (11 million st) of pellets may be stockpiled within the loop track. A 6-km (4-mile) long conveyor system connects the stockpile area and the dock. Thirty-six new concrete silos were built on the dock to house 2 kt (2,000 st) each of pellets before shiploading. The $35.5-million expansion of the Two Harbors transshipment facilities began shiploading in July 1978 after ground breaking in Aug. 1974. Particularly noteworthy is the first application of the Orboom system-a breakthrough in technology for the modernization of the century-old pocket docks on the Great Lakes to accommodate the new generation of super vessels. The pocket-type loading dock has been a standard on the lakes for nearly a hundred years. Bottom-dump rail cars fill the ore pockets on top of a finger pier. Gravity chutes matching standardized ore ship hatch spacings are lowered to fill the holds of a 20.3-kt (20,000-dwt) ship. The construction is simple and the loading swift. In spite of advances in technology elsewhere, most of these docks continue to serve the iron ore and coal trade in the same manner they did in the 19th century. Although performance of the pocket docks on small vessels remains outstanding, the new 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels are beyond the reach of the old docks. After extensive development, the Orboom system (Patent No. 4,065,002) for pocket docks was successfully developed. The heart of the Orboom system is the retractable shuttle loading arm which loads the wide beam vessels. MDL Rock Lasers has undertaken successful mapping trials of abandoned mine workings using its underground cavity scanning system. The work was being performed for Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), Australia&apos;s largest gold producer. MDL Rock Lasers supplies underground surveying systems to the mining and quarrying industry KCGM&apos;s Fimiston Super Pit, located in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, is Australia&apos;s largest open-pit gold operation. Fimiston&apos;s final pit design is expected to be 3.7 km (2.3 miles) long, 1.5 km (0.9-miles ) wide and 540 m (1,770 ft) deep. During the early days of Australian mining, underground operations were labor intensive. Mining was selective and generally narrow stopes were mostly backfilled. Improved processing technology and mine mechanization during the 1970s and 1980s has permitted larger scale operations to adopt less selective underground-stope operations. The "super pit" concept was a logical step for mining companies working toward economies of scale. However, the industry recognized that there was no precedent for excavating a 500-m- (1,640-ft-) deep open pit through ground previously affected by old workings. To appreciate the geotechnical challenge facing KCGM, it is necessary to consider that under the pro¬posed area at the open pit, stoping reached a level of 1 km (0.6 miles) and was supported by more than 2,000 km (1,240 miles) of development headings. The company was fortunate because plans were available for the Golden Mile underground operations. The existing plans were interpreted by the mine&apos;s geotechnical team and computer models were constructed of the underground workings. These models can be imported into three-dimensional mine planning packages, such as the Vulcan&apos;s Unix-based software, Envisage, to assist analysis and design. This prior knowledge of the workings provided the focus for investigating and confirming ground conditions using probe drilling. After several iterations of drilling, followed by detailed analysis, several decisions were made relating to the nature of the ground and the mining approach to be taken. It was recognized that the stope models were not perfect due to hu¬man error, lack of original survey information and progressive deterioration in ground conditions. It also became apparent that the sole reliance on probe drilling was inefficient in terms of time and quality of information. This was particularly true in complex areas where stopes are in close proximity. A major concern was the presence of open stopes (voids). In many cases, stopes consist of combinations of filled and void sections. The condition of pillars within these underground workings is extremely important. In time, pillars collapse and voids will propagate in upward and lateral directions. So systems needed to be developed that allowed rapid and accurate verification of ground conditions. KCGM was introduced to MDL Rock Lasers while investigating technology for underground mining. The two companies decided to use the C-ALS, MDL Rock Laser&apos;s underground laser, cavity scanning system, to improve the management of mining through affected ground. This system was to be used in conjunction with probe drilling and void mapping activities. A field test in one area of the Fimiston Mine verified the capability of the C-ALS system to quickly and efficiently assist in this decision making process. The C-ALS scanner features lightweight, carbon fi¬ber alignment rods from Measurement Devices Ltd.&apos;s (MDL) Boretrak MKII. This is a borehole deviation system that stops the two axis measurement head rotating and lowers the system down a borehole. The scanner is deployed by a 110-mm (4.3-in.) borehole, up, down or sideways. The operator can then carry out vertical and horizontal plan section scans at any user specified ARC (an angular increment of 2°) or the distance between two points on the ARC (CHORD) increments. Windows &apos;95 software enables the operator to control the cavity scanner remotely, surveying the area in real time. The system makes data quick and convenient.
