Freeport Minerals Co.'s Ertsberg East underground operation typifies the cliche that all the "easy" ore deposits have already been found. Despite its location, in a remote Indonesian rain forest, and the effort and expense required to develop the ore body, the mine was developed on schedule, under budget, and with minimal disruption of the adjacent open-pit mining operation. Development of the Ertsberg East copper, gold, and silver ore body took less than two years after exploration drilling and feasibility studies were completed. In addition, the project came in well under its targeted budget of $101.5 million. Initial block caving and underground ore production took place last year. About 3 kt/d of Ertsberg's total 8.6 kt/d ore production is currently mined underground. This will increase to 5.4 kt/d by year's end. Underground operations will eventually account for all of Ertsberg's production, as the open-pit ore body is depleted. Freeport Minerals is currently studying the possibility of increasing total Ertsberg East production tonnage to 10.5 kt/d by 1983. The equipment, work practices, and development methods at Ertsberg East (Gunung Bijih Timur or "GBT"), while typical of other block caving mines, were modified for rapid mine development and maximum ore recovery. Located in the Irian Jaya province, "Gunung Bijih" is the Indonesian expression for the Dutch "Ertsberg" that in English means "ore mountain." "Timur" means "east" and relates to the fact that the new underground ore body lies about 1 km east of the open pit. The area surrounding GBT is mountainous, with peaks from 4.2-5 km. The underground mine adit and surface plant are located at a 3.6-km elevation. The mine, 4° south of the equator, gets 5.1 m/a of rain, but has an average daily temperature of only 13°C because of the mine's elevation.

On December 8th of last year, the new St. Clair River tunnel was holed-through to Port Huron, Michigan. The tunnel, commissioned by the Canadian National Railway, was needed to replace an existing tunnel that had been built between 1889 and 1890, and had remained in continuous operation until the new tunnel was opened to traffic in April of this year. The original tunnel, after more than 100 years of service, was still structurally sound, but was too small to accommodate the double stacked container cars and other advances in the railroad's equipment that had developed over the years. Prior to the construction of the first tunnel, all freight was barged across the river. It was a slow, expensive process, which in winter was sometimes impossible. The nineteenth century tunnel was built in twenty months, utilizing two shields that mined to the middle from each end. The lining, which is still in excellent condition, consisted of bolted, cast iron segments, with an O.D. of 6.4 meters. It was the first sub-aqueous tunnel built in North American, and it's use of compressed air under the river and hydraulic power on the shields may also have been firsts. The digging was done by hand, and the muck hauled out by mule drawn wagons. Boulders and methane gas were reported to be a constant problem during the drive, and compressed air sickness was common, but when the two shields came together in August of 1890, it was reported that the alignment was within 6 mm. The new St. Clair River Tunnel was constructed for basically the same reason as the original. The larger equipment which the railroad is using today would not fit through the old tunnel, and once more they were forced to ferry the cars across the river.

"Among Tokyo Metro’s approximately 200km of subway lines, the Tozai Line that connects Chiba Prefecture and mid-Tokyo experiences congestion of up to 199% at worst and relief of this has become urgent. Therefore, as it is imperative to increase the number of trains operating in the exceptionally congested area from mid-Tokyo going east, a large-scale renovation work is planned between Iidabashi Station and Kudanshita Station that will facilitate turn-back via 3 tracks. While ensuring the safe and stable operation responsible for about 1.35 million passengers daily, this highly difficult work of inner wall demolition and reinforcement of the side walls and floor slabs will only be implemented for 3 hours during late night. This paper discusses large-scale plans to improve turn-back facilities, and the methods of construction therein as an example of operational improvement of a subway network. 1) INTRODUCTION The Tokyo Metro Tozai Line (“Tozai Line”) opened over the entire 30.8 km distance from Nakano to Nishi-funabashi on March 29, 1969. It has the longest operating length of the nine Tokyo Metro lines, and was the first subway line to extend past the borders of the Tokyo Metropolis. Through train services with two other railway companies are available from the Tozai Line. Tozai Line trains join the Sobu Line of the East Japan Railway Company (“JR East”) and the Toyo Rapid Railway Line of Toyo Rapid Railway (“TR”) from Nishi-funabashi Station, and the JR Chuo Line from Nakano Station. The line is structurally distinctive in that 51% of it was built using the open-cut method, 43% of it is elevated and the remaining 6% was built when we used the shield method for the first time 1)2)3)."

Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

After 15 years of production, 91 Mt (100 million st) of ore mined and nearly 227 kt (500 million lb) of molybdenum produced, Climax Molybdenum Co.&apos;s Henderson Mine and Mill are being modernized as a new mining level is brought on line. The $40 million investment in mine development and plant modernization positions the Henderson complex as one of the largest, low-cost primary molybdenum producers for the next 15 years. Henderson history The Henderson Mine and Mill facilities are located on the east and west flanks of the Continental Divide about 80 km (50 miles) west of Denver, CO. The underground mine and surface mill sites are linked by 16 km (10 mile) of railroad tunnel and 8 km (5 mile) of surface trackage. The mine, railroad and mill were built between 1968 and 1976 at a cost of $500 million. Each has operated at various levels of production over the past 15 years. The Henderson Mine was originally developed using a highly mechanized, panel caving mining system. Over the past 10 years, mining methods, equipment and railroad operations have been improved to position Henderson as one of the most productive and lowest cost underground mining operations. At the same time, the mill and concentrator facilities were upgraded to reduce costs and improve product quality. During this time, manpower was reduced from 2000 to 560 employees. These 560 people increased productivity to 54 t (60 st) per total manshift. They reduced operating costs by 50%. And they dramatically improved safety performance. However, as the 1990s approached, the modernization of the Henderson mining and milling complex and the development of the new 7700 mining level became the primary goals to guide Henderson into the 21st century.

Gold production is one the most important mineral process­ing industries in Western Australia. The gold is usually found in either weathered oxidised zones, or associated with sulfides. In the latter case, oxidation is achieved by some form of chemical processing, such as roasting or more recently bacterial leaching. In all cases, gold is dissolved out of the oxidised matrix by cyanide solution. Pyrrhotite is an iron sulfide generally represented by the formula Fe1_,S where O x 0.125. Three different structural forms ofpyrrhotite are known to occur naturally, stoichiometric FeS (troilite), hexagonal pyrrhotite Fe1_xS and monoclinic pyrrhotite Fe7S8 [I]. Substitution of iron atoms within the pyrrhotite structure by other ions of similar atomic radius such as nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese is also possible [2], and often observed in natural pyrrhotite samples. Pyrrhotite is abundant in Western Australian sulfide mineral deposits which are commonly associated with gold bearing ores. It is generally believed that pyrrhotite has a detrimental effect on gold recovery from such ores, as it is commonly claimed to decompose in alkaline, aerated cyanide solutions to form iron cyanide complexes, thus consuming free cyanide, and to form sulfur/oxygen containing species such as sulfate, through oxidation of sulfur in pyrrhotite, which thus consumes oxygen. From information gleaned from the literature, claims about the high reactivity of pyrrhotite in cyanide appear to be based on early cyanidation studies performed on gold ore samples which have been poorly characterised, and contained impurities such as pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, which may have also contributed to the levels of species observed in solution [3-5]. In addition, the investigations do not take into account that iron atoms in the pyrrhotite structure may have been partially substituted by other atoms that influence the solubility of pyrrhotite in cyanide solution.

INTRODUCTION The Control Problem The need for automatic control in flotation plants stems from frequent and randomly occurring disturbances to the feed slurry. Typical disturbances occur in the solids feedrate, the slurry percent sol ids, and the mineralogy and flotability of the gangue and valuable minerals. In plants where semi -autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are used, feedrate changes are very large and changes in feed percent solids of 1m or more are common. Mineralogy changes between valuable minerals are common, as are changes in the host gangue rock. As these changes occur, the operator can attempt to compensate for them by making adjustments to the flotation cell levels, the dosage rates of the collectors and frothers, the pH, and in some cases the aeration rate of the cells. This problem is sometimes complicated by the fact that different sections of the flotation plant will be processing different ore types at the same time. Potential Savings with Control Flotation control brings about savings or plant improvements in two areas; the first is in improved metallurgy and the second is in reagent savings. Improved metallurgy includes increases in the average plant recovery and achieves target concentrate grade level s more consistently. Average recovery increases between 1.0 and 5.0 percentage points have been widely reported (Paakkinen, 1979; Sutherland, 1984). Reagent savings of up to 40 percent have also been reported (Hales, 1985). VARIABLES OF IMPORTANCE Control led, Manipulated, and Disturbance Variables The initial step in the analysis of the flotation control problem is identification of important variables which can affect the efficiency of separation. The efficiency of separation is represented by a group of controlled variables which can quantify the performance of a flotation circuit. This group includes variables such as grade, recovery, tonnage through- put, and circulating loads. The efficiency of separation of a flotation circuit may generally be defined by a grade recovery map, where each point on this map re- presents a set of operating conditions (see Figure 1). However, the combination of operating conditions must be set to operate close to the economic optimum. The group of operating variables which are changed in order to achieve desired circuit performance are called manipulated variables and can be classified into two

In the non-operational ?Górka? quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha, containing approximately 1 million ton wastes from high aluminium content materials (incl. about 400000 t of wastes from aluminum hydroxide production), and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water and infiltrates from the disposal site mentioned. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Górka pond is both their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and a variable analysis of pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides, first of all, remedial pumping and a treatment of effluents retained in the Górka reservoir. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant according to a process verified so far on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product, a brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl) whose amount may reach up to 100000 m3 might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine, which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. In parallel, an intake of underflows of infiltrates would be provided (previous geochemical identification) in order to take them away from the high aluminum site (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches). Such effluents would be subject to treatment. The successive stage is the utilization of approx. 50000 m3 of bottom slurry, left in the emptied reservoir, in the production of self-solidifying mixtures, which would be then used for sealing the bottom and the banks of the Górka reservoir. The empty and sealed reservoir would be filled up with a volume of approx. 600000 t of ashes, coming from coal burning in the thermal-electric power station. For the last stage, instead, is scheduled the rehabilitation of the entire waste disposal site in the Górka quarry. The site will be drained, covered with a leveling, sealing and rehabilitating layer, which will allow to introduce plants on the rehabilitated waste site. Inco Limited operates 11 underground mines in the Sudbury District. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55,000 tons per day. Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960&apos;s. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30 years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 to 330 (cubic metres per second), with motors from 100 to 2500 hp. Fans of the axial flow type have been in common use for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages. The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter of that with a horizontal fan of the same capacity. (1) This is not a problem with isolated fans and flat surface outcrop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly favour vertical fans. MAIN FANS INSTALLED There are 43 main surface fans in operation at 11 mines. Twenty-seven of these fans are supply units, and 75% of them are vertical installation. The remaining 16 units are main surface exhaust fans, with predominantly horizontal installation. Within the last five years, some 20 main booster fans have been installed underground at several mines. Axial flow fans, with adjustable pitch blades, are used for both surface and underground installations. Exhaust fans are equipped with stainless steel or cast aluminum blades. Main underground fans are arranged horizontally and the majority of them have a floating shaft between the fan shaft and the motor. (2) The size of the fans in service varies from 1.8 m to 5 m in diameter, with the majority ranging from 1.8 to 2.5 m. The pressure produced by these fans varies from 0.25 kPa to 2.0 kPa. At Inco Limited, two main fans in parallel are preferred, rather than a single fan, so that if one fan fails, the remaining fan can still supply up to 70% of normal air quantities, while the damaged fan is repaired. This requires closure doors on each of the fans so the fan can be isolated in case of failure. It is more expensive than a single fan, but results in less production interruptions. The fan installations are well away from sharp inlet and outlet bends. FAN DESIGN INTEGRITY Both the mine operator and the fan manufacturer must understand that the main fan is critical to the mine operation, and that everything technically possible must be done in design and manufacture to ensure the highest degree of reliability. Some of the design parameters and criteria, based on Inco experience, are outlined and discussed below. RESONANT FREQUENCIES AND HOUSING MODEL ANALYSIS Any fan assembly will have many different resonant frequencies. It is a challenge to the designer to arrive at a design in which forcing frequencies do not coincide with any of these resonant frequencies to produce unacceptable vibration levels in operation. Finite element analysis is a useful tool that can be used to identify the most critical of these, so that housing and blade stiffness can be adjusted to change any resonances that might be close to forcing frequencies. Shaft critical speeds should be at least 25% above the fan operating speed, and there should be sufficient separation between other resonant and forcing frequencies to avoid excitation that might result in high vibration levels. QUALITY ASSURANCE Radiographic Blade Examination Mine fan blades are normally cast in small lots. To ensure that the castings are sound, a full radiographic examination is recommended in the highly stressed lower 1/3 of the blade.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) can occur as a natural phenome­non through oxidation of sulfide minerals. Oxidation by air and water can be exacerbated by mining. Because AMD can exhib­it low pH, it is capable of extracting heavy metals from mineral deposits. The result is highly acidic drainage with elevated heavy metal concentrations - the combination of which can cause extensive environmental damage. Because of the importance of these factors, this paper is focused on sulfate based AMD. Due to widespread mining, the occurrence of AMD is ubiqui­tous. As a result, several approaches to treatment have been developed. Chemical treatment using alkali is most commonly employed to treat AMD. There are alternative methods of treat­ment, as well as alternative ways of handling treatment sludges or concentrates. Dewatering of sludge or concentrates is beyond the scope of this paper. Within the family of chemical treatment processes, there are three principal recognized methods, namely, "Conventional," "High Density Sludge" (HDS) and "Heavy Metals Removal Process" (HMRP). All three are now employed or specified for treating AMO at mining sites which are being reclaimed under Superfund. Only limited data are available for more specialized chemical treatment processes such as "ferrate", borohydride membrane and electrochemical methods. Therefore, these data are not included here. Performance data for these three processes are presented in this paper and comparison among them is made. Comparisons include consideration of water quality, sludge characteristics, and operational ease. Capital and operational cost comparisons of these processes were addressed in a previous paper by the authors (see bibliography). The results presented here are impo1tant not only to metals mining, but are also applicable to other industries experiencing metals-laden acidic wastes including: coal mining and prepara­tion, metal plating, and electronics circuit board manufacturing. The acceptance of any process should be based on bench scale demonstration before implementation is contemplated. The three processes included herein are discussed in relation to the particular sites at which they are in use, or their use is planned. The sites selected were representative of the various types of processes and the wastewater parameters.

The Roybal Raise incorporates the simplicity and low cost of a short bald-headed raise while overcoming the usual impediments to driving a high baldheaded raise. The concept provides for speedy excavation and maximizing the use of the excavated opening, using the rock for structural support. The design is simple: two baldheaded raises are driven parallel to one another, interconnected by dogholes about 8 m (25 ft) apart. In this fashion, the raise can be driven safely and efficiently to 60 m (200 ft) or more. When the raise is complete, the excavation requires no timber for support or partitioning. Rather, the rock itself supports the construction. As a test, a two-compartment Roybal Raise was attempted at the Independence mine in the Willow Creek District of Alaska. One side was driven 2 x 2 m (6 x 6 ft), intended for a manway and equipment skip. The other was driven 1.5 x 1.5 m (5 x 5 ft) for a muck compartment. Both sides were driven at a 65° angle from horizontal and 1 x 1 m (4 x 4 ft) dogholes spanned the 4.6-m (15-ft) pillar between the two compartments. After topping out at 50 m (160 ft), the raise was found to meet all expectations of efficiency, low cost, and practical simplicity. Technique Preparing the Roybal Raise for driving involves no elaborate or costly site prep except assembling materials and providing for muck removal. Normally, the raise muck falls directly onto the sill or track and is picked up either by an overshot mucker or a front-end loader. Raise mining proceeds initially by taking up both compartments simultaneously to the first doghole. It progresses by alternating one side as a clear manway for access with the other side, the active side, as a muck compartment (Fig. 1A). This stage proceeds quickly for no mucking or staging is required to cycle the first three rounds. On the fifth round, in addition to the normal raise round, rib holes are winged out toward the adjacent raise, thus starting the dogholes. Finally, as the sixth raise rounds are drilled and shot, the first doghole is also completed from both sides. The second stage commences by establishing one side as a clear manway for access while the other side, used as a muck compartment, is prepared for active mining. Figure 1B illustrates this step in the succession of raising with the active side advancing to the second doghole level. During this stage, services are maintained through the manway side and equipment is stowed in the doghole during blasting. As the active side advances, muck may be allowed to fill the bottom portion of that side since it is unnecessary to clear it for access. The next stage of raising involves cleaning out the former muck compartment and preparing it for use as a manway. At the same time, the former manway is prepared for advance and use as a muck compartment (Fig. 1C). As in the previous step, the same doghole is used for access and equipment storage. The active side advances until the second doghole is completed, at which point equipment and access are moved to the new doghole. From there, the active side is driven past the second doghole 8 m (25 ft) more to the third doghole level. Again, half of the doghole and the next raise round are mined. The fourth stage involves switch ing back the manway side for the muck side (Fig. ID). The new muck side is driven to the third doghole where equipment storage and access are reestablished. From there, the active side is advanced to the fourth doghole. In the same fashion, the raise is advanced to the top, alternating the manway side with the active side, maintaining access through the inactive manway, and storing equipment in the uppermost doghole. The cycle time for driving each compartment, regardless of the raise height, is greatly improved over that for normal bald-headed raises of comparable height. By storing equipment in the upper-

INTRODUCTION In the last twelve years, underground stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine have evolved from open cut-and-fill with jacklegs, cribbed raises and electric slushers to ramp-based mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR) with dieselpowered loaders, trucks and drill jumbos. The evolution was swift. Unfortunately, ventilation practices have had trouble keeping pace. Stope ventilation is still too dependent on auxiliary fans and coolers. A single large MCF stope might contain up to eight headings, each of which requires significant ventilation resources when a diesel loader is present. Air is shortcircuited all too frequently through mined-out VCR panels. These factors and the recent rapid decent of the center of mining prompted a study to improve ventilation practices and to more accurately project future requirements. BACKGROUND In 1992, the underground portion of the Homestake Gold Mine produced 8336 kg of gold from 1407 ktons of ore (268,000 oz from 1,551,000 st). The ore is hosted in low to medium grade meta-sediments. Stoping took place from 420 to 2347 m below the surface (1400 to 7700-ft levels). The weighted center of mining was 1662 m deep (5450-ft level) in 1990 and is projected to be 1890 m (6200-ft) in 1993. The deepest level is 2440 m (8000-ft) where the virgin rock temperature (VRT) is 56.1°C (133F). The mine is ventilated by 504 m3/s (1,069,000 cfm) measured at mid-exhaust-circuit density. The air-conditioning system includes an 8.1 MWR (2300 ton) controlled recirculation plant, a 2.0 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant, a 1.0 MWR (290 ton) exploration drift refrigeration plant, 28 spot-coolers totaling 3.4 MWR (960 tons) and 35 spray coolers totaling 1.5 MWR (420 tons). The mine employs 117 diesel units with a total nameplate rating of 7961 kW (10,672 hp). These units include twenty-four 1.5m3 (2-yd) loaders, twenty-six 2.7m3 (3.5-yd) loaders, fourteen 3.8m3 (5-yd) and two 7.6m3 (10-yd) trucks, and assorted utility vehicles and drill jumbos. THE STUDY In April 1991, the University of Nevada-Reno (Mackay School of Mines) and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology cooperated with Homestake on an MCF study. Mackay instrumented a stope with thermocouples, air velocity meters and hygrometers (Duckworth, 1992). South Dakota Tech conducted a finite-elements computer analysis of a back-filled MCF stope with/without light-weight shotcrete insulation on the sidewalls and back (Chellam, 1992). Homestake conducted an empirical analysis of deep-level MCF stoping. This paper describes the Homestake study. Twenty-three of the forty MCF stopes deeper than 1800 m were surveyed at least once during the last quarter of 1992. The stopes not included were being cable-bolted or back-filled. Figure 1 shows the complexity of one of the ramp-based stoping areas included in the survey. This particular stope has six separate production headings. A baseline wallrock heat load was derived for each stope or heading from psychrometric calculations. Broken ore, waste rock fill and fissure water were noted when present and the effects included in the baseline heat load. Other heat sources often mentioned in the literature such as metabolic heat from workers, heat from explosives and small electric loads were neglected. Fan heat was considered part of the ramp & crosscut heat load and thus not included in the study. Diesel heat was addressed separately. RESULTS Survey results, plotted as the heat flux against VRT, are shown in Figure 2. The equation for the regression line is: W/m2 = 2.1236*VRT - 75.405 The 0.31 correlation coefficient is poor which implies that the results should be used cautiously. "With the background of water shortages and serious water pollution, issues of water involved in energy exploration and utilization have become critical problems affecting urban water usage. In order to identify the relationships of the energy-water nexus, this paper characterizes the energy-water nexus literature using a bibliometric method and based on the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database platform. The results reveal that 1) Scientific outcomes in this field have increased sharply since 2003, with a slightly higher growth rate than that of general disciplines. 2) China Water Resources, Yangtze River and Express Water Resources & Hydropower Information are the dominant journals, and the main research fields include industrial economics, environmental science, and management, among other disciplines. 3) Hohai University, the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, and the Changjiang Water Resources Commission are the main research institutions in this field. However, the proportion of publications of these institutions is not high, which suggests that there is no institution dominating this field. 4) According to the keyword analysis, the hot spots in this field include ecological environment, sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change, etc. Energy-mining related keywords have increased over time, implying that the energy-water nexus from the perspective of the energy exploitation industry can become a key issue. At the same time, the frequency of keywords related to sustainable development has been maintained at a high level, and the studies concerned with the impacts of climate change were introduced into this field relatively late. The conclusion of this study provides a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the current situation as well as for further research in the energy-water nexus field.Introduction As an important strategic resource for national economic and social sustainable development, water has been increasingly focused on by the Chinese Government. Over the next decade, the total water demand of China will continue to grow steadily, which lead to a significant trend of increasing water consumption in the future (Zhang 2013). To reasonably exploit, utilize, conserve and protect water resources, the Water Law of the People's Republic of China was enacted by the members of the 9th National People's Congress Standing Committee in 1988 and after multiple revisions, the latest of which, in September 1, 2016, has involved water infrastructures in the national economic and social development plans of the government at all levels and regulated the rationale for water engineering construction. Thus, in the context of serious water shortages and water pollution, China’s government has taken several measures to make rational use of water resources."

"The new tunnels of the Copenhagen ""Cityringen"" will be excavated, at Kongens Nytorv square, crossing over the existing M1 and M2 metro lines. After the crossing, the tunnels will underpass the historical building of the Magasin du Nord and adjacent masonry buildings, with a minimum tunnel cover of about 4.5 m. The tunnels have an internal diameter of 4.9m and are being excavated through earth pressure balanced Tunnel Boring Machines in mixed face.The Magasin du Nord estate is characterized by a very complex structure, with different blocks built in different times. An assessment of the condition of the building and its sensitivity to tunnellinginduced ground movements has been conducted through a fully coupled soil-structure interaction analysis; based on the results of this analysis, mitigation measures have been designed.INTRODUCTIONThe Copenhagen Metro Cityringen is expected to be running in July 2019 and will consist of two single tracks in a twin tunnels, each approximately 16 km in length, for transporting up to 243,000 passengers on an average work day. The Cityringen includes 17 underground stations with island platforms, 4 crossover facilities and 3 construction and ventilation shafts. The tunnels is being excavated using earth pressure balanced Tunnel Boring Machines and have an internal diameter of 4.90 m.The intersection with the existing M1 and M2 metro-line will take place at Kongens Nytorv and at Frederiksberg. According to the design alignment, in Kongens Nytorv the new tunnels will pass over the existing M1 and M2 ones; as a result of this, the tunnels will underpass the historical building of the Magasin du Nord and the adjacent masonry building hosting a Mc Donald’s with a minimum cover of about 4.5m.In the framework of Risk Assessment for sensitive buildings, the effects of tunneling-induced ground movements on the Estates ØS0437 (McDonald’s building), ØS0428 (Magasin du Nord) and ØS0004 (Hviids Vinstue) were evaluated. To achieve this goal a fully coupled soil-structure interaction has been considered and the entire excavation process has been reproduced in a 3D model where the abovementioned buildings have been modeled. In this way, a risk assessment analysis was performed evaluating directly the effects of the excavation in terms of settlements and variations of the internal forces as far as the excavation process proceeds. Classification of Mills Mills may be classified under four categories that relate to the type of action utilized to grind the material: Tumbling. The most important of these to the minerals processing industry are tumbling mills. Grinding media is actuated in a free¬form pattern in a rotating drum causing it to tumble, material being ground passing through the tumbling media. Work is done by a combi¬nation of attrition and impact. Impact. Grinding media is actuated in a distinctive pattern so that it impacts the material being ground. Work is done by impact. Roller. Grinding media is actuated in a distinctive pattern, mate¬rial being ground passing under or between the media. Work is done by compression. Fluid Energy. There is no grinding media as such. Energy is imparted to the material by transfer of kinetic energy from the fluid to the material. Grinding is accomplished by interparticle impact and attrition. Tumbling Mitts The main physical arrangement consists of a lined cylindrical drum mounted on trunnion bearings driven by a ring gear and pinion, in turn connected directly or through a reducer to the electric motor. Variations to this general arrangement include: (1) Drum mounted on rollers instead of trunnions. (2) Bearings on the drum directly, not on trunnions. (3) Utilization of multiple pinions on the gear. (4) Trunnion-type drive arrangement through a gear reducer with¬out the use of a ring gear. (5) Motor rotor mounted directly on the drum with stator around the drum, thus eliminating the gearing. The drum consists of a shell and heads lined with replaceable liners of various types and configurations. Various types of tumbling mills are tabulated; illustrations of some are shown. The types are so designed for specific purposes. Media utilized include steel rods, balls, or rock of the same material as being ground or of special material in the instance where iron contami¬nation is detrimental (see Figs. 9 and 10 and Table 2). Impact Mills Although there may be some overlapping of interpretation of terms, impact mills are considered those in which the media is actuated in a distinctive manner, at relatively high speed, impacting the material to be ground. There is an overlapping also in what may be considered to be crushing equipment rather than grinding equipment. Hammer Mill or Impactor. Material is fed into the equipment; inside hammers of impactors revolve at a high speed, breaking the material on impact with the hammers (see Fig. 11). "During the mid to late 1960’s, the underground potash industry in Saskatchewan was born. For the next four decades the industry operated at a steady pace supporting a large part of the world demand; until 2008 when the potash market heightened. Operators were motivated to capitalize on this increased demand, new mines were proposed while existing mines were planning upgrades. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) was one of the major producers planning upgrades to their production facilities quickly, including modifying the existing headframe and shaft at the PCS Cory Site to accommodate a new 1500 tonne per hour hoisting plant. Upon completion of the project, the innovative operations group continuously reviewed methods to increase production and reduce operating costs, allowing PCS to continue being competitive on the world market. This paper will describe the design challenges encountered during the development of the infrastructure around an operating facility whilst minimizing down time, schedule, capital and construction costs. This paper will also explore the strategy to increase capacity of the newly commissioned hoisting plant. BACKGROUND Potash production is a major Saskatchewan industry, and has played a significant role in the economy for over 40 years. Production commenced in 1962 when water problems were overcome at the International Minerals and Chemical (IMC) mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. A surge of development by other companies resulted in twelve companies opening ten mines by 1970. In 1975 Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan was created by the government of Saskatchewan and shortly thereafter purchased several mines in Saskatchewan, including the Cory Mine (Cory), near Saskatoon. Cory has been in operation since 1968 and is located 12 km (7.5 mi) west of Saskatoon in central Saskatchewan. The mine is located in the center of the world’s largest potash deposit, 1,000 m (3300 feet) below surface. PCS has embarked on sizable capital expansions of more than CDN $7 billion. The Cory CDN $1.6 billion expansion was expected to raise operational capability of the site to 2.7 million tonnes per year, an increase of 1.9 million tonnes per year (MTPY). To achieve 2.7 MTPY of finished product and considering the 22.6% average production recovery1, 12 MTPY of ore must be hoisted to surface for processing. To deliver this rate required upgrading of the hoisting plant to 1500 tonne per hour (TPH). To accomplish this ambitious challenge, creative thinking, careful planning and a cohesive team was needed to work together to ensure the schedule, budget and most importantly the work was completed safely"

Cyanidation is one of the most common practices used in the extraction of gold and silver. One method of application is heap or dump leaching which entails the leaching of the gold or silver ore by spraying or dripping a cyanide lixiviant over the ore and collecting the effluent. The ore is placed on what is known as a leach pad system. A typical leach pad system consists of a foundation, a leakaqe detection system, a liner, and a cover layer (Strachan and van Zyl, 1988). There are many types of liners available for use. The type of liner depends upon what type leaching pad system us used. Generally, leaching pad systems can be categorized into two types: an expandable pad and a reusable pad. An expandable pad exposes the liner to the elements only in the initial stages of ore placement on the leach pad system. A reusable pad exposes the liner to the elements on a periodic basis. In addition to the exposure to the elements, the liner is also under the stress of the ore placed on it and the stress of the vehicular traffic across it. These stresses and exposure to the elements are the major causes of liner failures, which can appear as punctures, tears, cracks, and deterioration. Because of the possibility of the failure of the pads to contain cyanide-laden solutions the designs for liners of pads and ponds have become more and more stringent. Currently, though, there is some recognition that in some locales such stringent design criteria may not be required (Chatwin, 1989). Some soils have significant cyanide attenuation and degradation capacity. It has been found that soils containing carbon- aceous materia1 wi11 remove cyanide from solutions percolating through them (Chatwin, 1989). Of course metallurgists have long recognized the deleterious effect of carbonaceous material in the mill circuit. Sheridan, et a1 (1988) have shown that WAD cyanide is detected in the effluent of a 2 m column filled with ground carbonaceous ore only after it had been continuously washed with greater than 9 pore volumes of NaCN solution. It was decided to examine the potential of successfully attenuating cyanide by placing an organic material layer between a 1iner and the prepared soil base. One consideration for the selection of the organic material was cost. Sawmill wastes, ground agricultural wastes (such as corn cobs), and other organic wastes were considered. But the first waste to be tested was a product found at any metropolitan area, sewage sludge.

INTRODUCTION Radioactive deposits were observed in 1972 in some of the Upper Silesian coal mines. They were located mainly in the drains in galeries and on the inside surfaces of water pipes. They also caused some problems by accumulating in water pumps. It has been postulated that the deposits are produced by natural radioactive waters seeping from the rocks. Investigations were initiated to answer the following questions: - What is the composition and the amount of radioactivity in the deposits? - What radioisotopes are present in the water? - How are the radioactive deposits formed? - Do the radioactive waters also occur in other mines? - How does the radioactivity of the water depend on chemical composition? - What is the origin of the radioactive water? - Does the water and the deposits cause radiation hazards for miners? -How can the radiation hazard be reduced? METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Determination of Radium Isotopes in Water The commonly used methods of radium determination in water are either based on measurements of the radioactivity of 222Rn which is in equilibrium with 226Ra, or on the detection of alpha particles of the radium radioisotopes after chemical separation of radium from the water sample. The method based on radon activity measurements is very sensitive and does not require any chemical Separation, but it can be used for determination of 226Ra from the uranium series only, because the thorium daughter 220Rn has too short a half-life (55s to yield the required accuracy. The method developed by Goldin, 1961 [2] involved alpha-particle measurements in thin layers of RaS04 and BaS04 separated from the water. This method is not convenient for saline water and water with high barium concentration because the amount of barium carrier in this case is too large to obtain a thin layer of precipitate with sufficient activity. The Upper Silesian carboniferous waters are often saline with high barium content, so the method described by Goldin was not convenient for this case and it was necessary to change the detection system and modify the chemical preparation. The procedure developed by the authors for the determination of radium isotopes in water was as follows: - Depending on the Ba2+ content and the required sensitivity of measurement, a water sample of 200 cm3 to 3 dm3 was taken. - 10 cm3 of 0.25 M citric acid and 5 cm3 15M ammonia was added to form complex Ba2+ ions and avoid the immediate precipitation of BaSO4. (This was repeated as long as the addition of BaC12 did not form a precipitate.) - 1 cm3 of 1N solution of Pb(N03)2 as a carrier for radioactive isotopes of lead and 10 cm3 of 0.1 N BaC12 as a carrier for radium were added. - The sample was heated to the boiling point and the precipitation of RaS04, BaSO4 and PbS04 with 50% H2SO4 was carried out. - After several hours the sample was centrifuged and the precipitate was purified by washing with nitric acid and distilled water. - The precipitate was then redisolved in 20 cm3 0.125 M Na2EDTA and 3 cm3 6M ammonia and reprecipitated from the solution by dropwise addition of acetic acid to d pH of 4.5. At this value of pH, precipitation occurs only for the barium and radium sulfates, while lead and all other radioactive elements remain in the solution. The date and time of deposit precipitation was recorded. - The final barium-radium sulfate mixture was washed with distilled water and transferred to standard measurement vials. - Each vial containing a deposit had 6 cm3 of distilled water added and was then shaken vigorously. 12 cm3 of liquid gelling scintillator (INSTA-GEL UNISOLV-1 type) was then added and the vi 1 was shaken again. After a while the scintillator turns into a milky gel in which the deposit is uniformly distributed. - The standard sample of 226Ra was prepared in the same way. - The activity of the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation spectrometer. (In this case the TRICARB 3320 produced by Packard Instruments, was used). Tests run on standard radium solutions provided by Amersham Radiochemical Centre indicated that this method of measurement enables one to achieve an efficiency of almost 100% (within measurement error). For alpha particles no quenching effect was observed for the BaS04 concentration in the range up to 80 mg of BaS04 per 1 cm3 of liquid scintillator coctail (Fig. 1). Attendance exceeded 4,500 minerals professionals from all over the world at SME&apos;s March 9-11 Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Orlando, FL. The exhibit, of more than 600 booths, featured 398 of the mining industry&apos;s premier suppliers. The keynote session, "Change makers in the industry," opened the meeting. The session featured Jeffrey Clevenger, president of Cyprus Climax Metals; Mark Baker, senior vice president of Modular Mining Systems, a division of Komatsu; and John Correnti, vice chairman, president and chief executive officer of Nucor. The SME meeting also featured four specialty programs: Bulk materials handling by conveyor belt, Latin American perspectives, plant operators&apos; symposium and waste characterization and treatment. Also open to attendees were more than 60 technical sessions encom¬passing coal, the environment, industrial minerals, mining and exploration, minerals and metallurgical processing and minerals resource management. Ed Dowling was the chair of the 1998 SME technical programming committee. And Dowling, director of process management and engineering for Cyprus Minerals, acted as the host of the SME keynote session. Dowling said the mining industry has undergone incredible change over the last decade. And the forces of change continue to accelerate. These changes include globalization, regulatory pressures, technology, labor, competition, pricing and other market influences, he said. With that in mind, the SME program committee selected as the theme of this year&apos;s SME Annual Meeting, "The changing world of mining ... our role." Given some of the current commodity prices, Dowling said, the theme is timely. He also noted that a large percentage of the 60 technical sessions spoke to the evolving operational and business aspects of the mining industry as the industry crossed international boundaries. The keynote session mirrored the meeting theme by focusing on the increasing challenges and required changes the minerals industry faces. Dowling reminded keynote attendees that change is not a new idea. He said Benjamin Franklin described three types of people: Those who are immovable, those who can be moved and those who are movers. And so it was appropriate that three of the most forward-thinking movers in the business - Clevenger, Baker and Correnti - address the keynote session, Dowling said. John Callaway moderated the keynote session. He is senior correspondent for WTTW TV, the public broadcast station in Chicago. For the past 13 years, Callaway has served as host of WTTW&apos;s award-winning, primetime news analysis program, Chicago Tonight. Callaway said that the keynote changemakers are recognized as industry leaders whose vision has led to significant business transformation and results. "With decades of development and exploitation of coal resources, the first batch of coal-based cities in China are faced with the challenge of economic shrinkage and environment deterioration due to the rapid resource exhaustion and single industrial structure. Nowadays, as a policy instrument for sustainable development, a nationwide circular economy mode has been implemented during the design and planning of new coal mines to address the challenges arising from economic depression, energy shortage and environmental pollution. It should be mentioned that several national coal bases and most of constructing and planning coal mines are located in the underdeveloped areas in the Midwest of China which means that the distance between supply source for energy resources and the demand market is significantly increased. Moreover, the eco-environment vulnerability in these rural areas should be taken into serious consideration. Therefore, after comparison and analysis with several successful coals based and diversified circular industry chains, this paper presents a case study on the circular economy park (CEP) in the northwest of Shanxi Province. Through discussion and evaluation of ‘1+3’ mode in the CEP, this paper aims to enhance the understanding of coal mine sustainable development and shed light on the relationship between resources exploitation and local economic development.1. Introduction Earth's fossil energy resources are crucial to both economic prosperity and human well-being. Taking coal mining and consumption as an example, coal has been widely used to generate electricity since the 1880s, and more than 40% of the electricity globally is provided by coal nowadays. However, as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide releases (39% of global CO2 emissions), the extensive excavation and utilization of coal have brought a series of side effects to both natural environment and human health (Wikipedia 2017). As the largest coal producer and consumer in the world, China is leading the list over the past decade (as shown in Figure 1) (BP 2016). The excavation and utilization of coal resources have made a crucial impact and irreplaceable contributions to China’s industrial development and economic prosperity (Long and Zhang 2009). However, most of the air pollution in China are also attributed to the simplified and extensive exploitation of coal resources, e.g., 90% of SO2, 67% of NO, 70% of smoke ashes, and 70% of CO2 in 2016. In recent years, most of North China and the developed coastal areas were wreathed by smog due largely to the oversimplified extensive utilization of coal, suggesting that the development patterns of coal utilization need to be reshaped so that both the biosphere and humanity could thrive equally."
