Introduction Synthetic soda ash production began to decline in the late 1930s. This was due to high operating costs and waste disposal problems. Since soda ash was used as a major component in manufacturing glass, an alternate method of producing that chemical was necessary. A process to produce soda ash from trona was developed by FMC Wyoming Corp.'s predecessor, as well as an economical way to obtain trona. Existing trona operations are located about 40 km (25 miles) west of Green River, WY. Five operators presently mine trona in this area. FMC's property has 153 km2 (59 sq miles) leased. Its eight shafts reach 488 m (1600 ft) deep to the uniform trona deposit. The seam ranges in thickness from 2.4 to 3.6 m (8 to 12 ft). History Egyptian tombs, dating from 4000 to 3000 BC, contained mummies preserved by an embalming process using soda ash. For many years, soda ash was produced by burning marine plants, then dissolving the soluble material (sodium carbonate) from the ashes. The name soda ash is derived from this method of production. In 1791, Nicola LeBlanc developed black ash, or salt cake, from salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. This process remained in use until 1863, when Ernest Solvay developed a method for producing soda ash from salt, coke, and limestone with ammonia as a catalyst. This Solvay process was widely used. And, in the 1930s, there were 17 plants in the US alone. High plant operating costs and waste disposal problems, however, necessitated finding an alternative to the Solvay process.

The former mayor of Los Angeles, CA is a believer in public transportation but thinks neither his city nor the entire country is spending enough on basic infrastructure. In fact, the United States has fallen behind most other developed nations in improving public transportation, the former mayor said. Antonio R. Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker at the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, held June 22-25 in Los Angeles, CA. The event, held every two years, is sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This years? conference attracted 1,091 underground construction professionals from around the world. The accompanying exhibition continues to grow, attracting 142 exhibiting companies occupying 162 booths. As always at NAT, registered attendees received the proceedings volume of the conference, which contains 132 papers. The proceedings volume, including a CD of the papers, is available from SME for $149 member, $139 student member and $189 nonmember. "Workers at mineral processing facilities are often exposed to high levels of dust generated when ores are processed. Crushing, grinding, screening, and other processes generate large quantities of dust, which can exceed the threshold VALUES (prescribed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Many ores contain quartz (silica), which has been known to cause serious health problems in workers over time. Given the structure of mineral processing plants, the airflow regime is not coherent inside the building, which may lead to multiple recirculation zones. These recirculation zones can trap dust, and concentrations of dust can then rise over time. Therefore, there is a need to understand the airflow phenomenon that occur inside of mineral processing facilities and how these occurrences interact with the dust generation processes to identify zones of potentially high dust concentration. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling can give a better understanding of the airflow and help recommend designs and methods to mitigate the high dust concentrations in a mineral processing plant. This paper presents the CFD modeling of airflow inside of a mill building to demonstrate airflow patterns that will affect the generation and subsequent dispersion of dust due to crushing, grinding, and other activities. This study was conducted by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). INTRODUCTION In a mineral processing facility, minerals go through various mechanical processes in order to reduce their size for separation of economic minerals from gangue minerals to produce a final marketable product. This research, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), focuses on ore mills in metal and nonmetal mining (MNM) operations, but the applicability of the approach will be valid for any large structure where workers are exposed to airborne contaminants. The processes of crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, and product sizing in these facilities generate a large amount of dust, creating hazardous conditions for the workers in these facilities. This is highlighted by the fact that MSHA sampling data for the years 1997–2012 indicate that 12.3% and 15.9% of the gathered samples were over 100 µg/m3 for silica for metal and nonmetal mills, respectively [1]. Mineral processing operations typically use some type of engineering control to address their most significant dust sources. Engineering controls include such approaches as bag-house-type dust collectors, scrubbers, and electrostatic precipitation [2]."

"Tin ore from the southeast of Yunnan in China is a complex polymetallic low-grade ore. Because of the highly disseminated extent ore, cassiterite flotation was applied in industrial production instead of the low efficient gravitational separation. Benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) was widely used as a collector in cassiterite flotation, but the consumption of BHA was large. In this study, the influence of octanol in cassiterite flotation from the southeast of Yunnan using BHA as the collector was investigated. The results indicated that single octanol showed almost no flotation capability to cassiterite without BHA. However a small amount addition of octanol as the auxiliary collector can decrease the consumption of BHA significantly, while did not reduced the recovery of cassiterite obviously. Infrared spectra analysis indicated that the single octanol adsorbed on the surface of cassiterite was unsteady adsorption, and a new entity assembled of BHA and octanol in a well manner was able to adsorb on the surface of cassiterite steadily. The probable self-assembly structure model of BHA and octanol existing on the surface of cassiterite was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Cassiterite is the prime and economic mineral from which tin metal is extracted economically (Qin et al., 2011). The estimated tin metal resources in the world is about 4.9 million tonnes, about 30.5% of which is distributed in China (Mineral commodity summaries, 2013). Cassiterite has many characteristics such as including heavy, hard, and extremely brittle in nature. Hence cassiterite is preferentially concentrated by gravity separators. However, the influence of particle size on gravity concentration is obviously. The separation efficiency is very high for coarse particles while it drops down considerably for fine sizes. (Turner and Hallewell, 1993). Application of flotation and development of selective surfactants have made it possible to recover fine and ultrafine cassiterite from the gravity tailings. A substantial amount of research work on cassiterite flotation has been reported in the past years. The outcome of such research has helped to develop various collector reagents such as cupferron (Vivian, 1927), sodium dodecyl sulfate (Edwards and Ewers, 1951), sodium oleate (Collins et al., 1968), salicyaldehyde (Marabini, 1978), alkyl and aryl arsonic acids (Senior and Poling, 1986), alkyl and aryl phosphonic acids (Gruner and Bilsing, 1992), alkyl sulfosuccinamates (Khangaonkar and Kamarudin, 1994), and alkyl hydroxamates (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002)."

History of Underground Coal Mining in Illinois The production of coal in Illinois using underground mining methods, commenced early in the 1800's; however, the first shaft entrance was not sunk until 1842. The shafts range in depth from 16 feet (4.9 m) in Peoria County to 1,001 feet (306 m) in Christian County. The earlier mines were smell, private operations that worked outcrops and shallow seams at less than 100 feet (30.5 m) in depth. By 1975, there were reported 4,076 abandoned underground coal mines in 70 Illinois counties (Nawrot, 1977). There were many more mines; however, only 4,076 underground mines have been documented. Small mining operations characterize the majority of the underground mines. There have been no significant multiple seam operations in Illinois. The most extensively mined seams were the number two, five, and six seams. Number two seam was worked in the early 1900's by 252 mines in the longwall mining region of northern Illinois (Nawrot, 1977). Available records for 2,054 abandoned mines identify 1,043 as shaft nines, 700 as slope mines, and 311 as drift mines. Some operators began reporting annually to the State Department of Labor in 1879 and by 1882 all mine operators were reporting. Annual reporting still continues to date. The information is compiled by the State Department of Panes and Minerals in their "Annual Coal Report." By the end of 1974 there were 800,000 acres (323,756 hectares) of abandoned underground coal mine workings (Smith-Stall, 1975)2 Copies of abandoned underground coal mine maps may be inspected by interested parties in the State Department of fines and Minerals office in Springfield, Illinois, or at the office of any county recorder for mines within their county. Copies of active underground coal mine maps may be inspected at a State mine rescue station near the mine site or at the county recorder's in the county in which the mine is located. Copies of active underground coal nine naps shall be open to the examination of all interested persons, but such examination shall be made only in the presence of the State mane inspector or the recorder. At the present time, the Department of Mines and Minerals has 1,746 maps of abandoned underground coal mines in its possession. These maps cover the majority of

Introduction From the days of the Spanish in the eighteenth century, Colorado's San Juan mining district has attracted miners and public interest. The Spanish left behind names - San Juans, La Plata, Animas, legends of lost mines, and the remains of a few scattered mining operations. They came, but did not stay. Again in 1860-61, as a spinoff of the Pike's Peak gold rush, prospectors climbed the mountains and descended into the canyons searching for gold. They found some, not enough to convince them to remain and confront the isolation, often hostile environment and the Utes, who rightfully felt this to be their home. Not until the 1870s did miners come to stay. In their wake little camps grew in the high valleys and squeezed into narrow canyons. Nowhere else in Colorado were there more rugged mountains, a higher average elevation, nor a climate that one old Swede said was "three months of mighty late fall and nine months of winter." The San Juans proved eventually to be a mineral treasure chest. At the moment, however, the prospectors sought gold. Then they discovered silver deposits and the first rush was on. It got started just in time to be completely overcome by the Leadville excitement. At Leadville, investors almost fell over themselves to buy claims and stock in the hopes of becoming another millionaire like Leadville's own Horace Tabor. The San Juaners could only look from the sidelines and speculate how it might have been had fate been kinder. Fate was seldom kind, as these pioneers quickly discovered. From the mid-1870s on, the San Juaners wrestled with some major problems. And the fate of their district rode in the balance. The problems they faced were similar to those of other Colorado districts, compounded by their geographic isolation. Every mining district needed the best transportation system available, experienced investors combined with sound investment, and mineral reserves to develop. The San Juans offered the last in abundance. It was hoped the first two would appear. Railroads - much needed transportation link Nothing was more desired than railroad connections, the penultimate nineteenth century form of transportation. Colorado's own, the Denver & Rio Grande, resolved the issue with its mountain-hugging narrow gauge. As early as the mid-1870s, the D&RG dreamed of tapping this potentially lucrative market in southwestern Colorado. A national economic depression and then the Leadville silver excitement prevented immediate construction. Not until 1879-80 did survey crews start work.

X. Huang (1997) recently suggested a poroelastic model for simulating the hydraulic fracturing breakdown pressure. His paper began with a discussion questioning Haimson and Fairhurst's (H&F) model. He claimed that the H&F model failed to lead to the Hubbert and Willis (H&W) model as[ a --> 0.] Huang also tried to explain why the H&F model could only work for special types of rock conditions. He pointed out that one possible reason could be that the Terzaghi's effective-stress concept had been adopted. The H&F model (Haimson and Fairhurst, 1969) was derived under the conditions that the borehole wall is fully penetrated (pp = pi) and a drained state is realized (steady pore-pressure field). Cui et al. (1997a) demonstrated that, under drained conditions, the total stresses in the penetrating poroelastic model (identical to the H&F model) degenerate into their counterparts in the elastic model (identical to the H&W model) as [a -- 0.] However, the effective-stress conditions are different for both of these models, because different pore-pressure conditions at the borehole wall were adopted. In the H&W model, p = po was assumed, i.e., the pore pressure field is not disturbed; but pp = pi was assumed in the H&F model. Assuming that Terzaghi's effective-stress controls tensile failure (that was the hypothesis adopted in both the H&F and the H&W models), only the following two special drained poroelastic cases may degenerate into the H&W model for very small a: • when the pore pressure at the borehole wall remains at the same level as the virgin pore pressure for a penetrating model and when the borehole wall is simply impermeable (i.e., the nonpenetrating model, Cui et al., 1997b). Therefore, simply setting a = 0 in the H&F model generally does not lead to the same problem described by the H&W model. On the other hand, when the porepressure boundary conditions do not correspond to the ones in the H&W model, a degeneration of the poroelastic model to the H&W model as [a – 0] should be questionable. The pore pressure at the borehole wall is generally dependent on the injection-fluid pressure and the penetrating conditions at the borehole wall, such as the existence of a filter-cake. For an impermeable wall, pp is independent of Pi, and it is basically an unknown [(how¬ever, pp -- po as t --oo).] For a fully permeable wall, pp is the same as Pi. Between these two extremes, pp should be a function of p; and the permeable condition of the borehole wall, which may be dependent of the leak-off coefficient cf. (the range of cf is from 0 to 1). Theoretically, for a rock with low permeability, a penetrating borehole wall is still possible. For saturated porous materials with very low values of a, poroelasticity shows that a pore pressure will be built up due to the stress concentration subjected to a nonhydrostatic in situ stress field (Cheng et al., 1993). This phenomenon is known as the Skempton effect. The variation of the pore pressure may be evaluated by [AP = 3 B(A rr + 06ee + A (Y,,)] (1) where B is the Skempton pore pressure coefficient. This pore pressure variation dissipates as time increases (it is totally gone as the drained state is approached). The rate of the dissipation mainly rely on the permeability of the formation. The dissipation is very slow for tight formations because their permeability is very low, and it is fast for rocks of high permeability. According to our analyses, the time period for this process could be from seconds (for sandstone's) to a couple of days (for stales). One possible reason that the H&C model did not agree well with the experimental results for rocks with low permeability might be that the time interval between the application of the loading and the fluid injection had not been long enough for the dissipation of the Skempton effect. The effective-stress law basically defines how much pore pressure contributes to the total stress. The difference between Terzaghi's effective stress and Biot's effective stress is that 100% of the pore pressure contributes to the total stress in Terzaghi's definition, while only a certain portion of the pore pressure ((ap) goes to the total stress in Biot's definition. Therefore, when the pore pressure at the boretole wall (pp) is determined according to Biot's effective-stress law, app in the total tangential stress is attributed to the pore pressure. Introduction Mining and minerals transportation spans the distance from the pit face and mine wall to the consumer. This transportation can be as simple as coal transfer from the mine and preparation plant by conveyor to a mine mouth electric generating plant. Or it can be as complex as copper ore transportation: concentrated, smelted, refined; drawn into wire and insulated; and cut into reels and transported to local industrial supply houses. The route of aluminum from the bauxite pits to the supermarket shelf in the form of household food wrap is another example of the potential complexity of minerals transportation. For perspective, however, mine to market minerals transportation can be split into three components: materials handling, transportation, and distribution. It should also be recognized that each mineral, market, producer, and consumer has unique transportation characteristics regarding costs, transportation mode, and alternatives in the transportation scheme. Some obvious considerations are the number of producers and consumers, the number of markets and customers the mineral serves. Concerning the latter, are you selling a million tons to one customer or a ton each to a million customers? Transportation volume About the only generalization that can be made about minerals transportation concerns the large volume of materials involved. No other industry compares to the mining and minerals industry in its huge movement of product in the crude, semi-processed, processed, fabricated, and converted states, as shown by the accompanying table of US mineral production. Whether it is crushed stone or sand and gravel moving by truck to a local market from local producers, or coal moving by 9.07 kt (10,000 st) unit trains from a mine to a power plant, or iron ore moving by lake vessel from the upper lake ports to the lower lake steel mills, mineral transportation volumes are huge. The nature of production and consumption affects the transportation mode. More than 60% of the coal moves by rail. The majority of iron ore moves by lake vessel. Ninety per cent of the sand and gravel and more than 80% of crushed stone moves by truck. Factors Affecting Minerals Transportation Some would define minerals transportation as the cost and route to move a mineral product from the first point of sale to the first point of consumption. Discussion by B. Mather I was very glad to see an article on alkali-silica reactivity of concrete aggregate in Mining Engineering. It is a topic that should be reexamined every 45 or 50 years. The last paper (that I am aware of) that examined this topic in Mining Engineering was Rexford (1950), who, at the time, was chief of the Petrography Section, South Pacific Division Laboratory, Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles, CA. The paper was presented at the AIME meeting in Los Angeles in October 1948. Professor Leming's discussion generally reflects the current state-of-the-art; but it provides no references for more detailed information. I wrote a paper titled "How to avoid excessive expansion of concrete due to alkali-aggregate reaction," which was included in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reactions in Hydroelectric Plants and Dams (Mather, 1995). In it, I emphasized that it was the hydroxide ion (not the alkali ion) that caused the pore fluid in the concrete to dissolve reactive silica, producing alkali-silica gel capable of taking up water, thereby, causing swelling and rupturing of the concrete. Excessive expansion will not occur unless there is a sufficient amount of potentially expansive alkali-silica reaction product and water. However, this will not occur unless there is a sufficient quantity of reactive aggregate and unless there is a mechanism by which the pH of the pore fluid can get well above the normal value of about 12.6. In many cases it is sufficient that the cementitious medium not only contains portland cement but also contains ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) or a pozzolan such as fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, volcanic glass or calcined shale - any of which may have been included for economic reasons. If, however, the person selecting the ingredients for concrete knows that the aggregate is reactive (with no alternate nonreactive aggregate available) and if the person knows that the only available portland cement has a high alkali content (i.e., more than 0.6% Na2Oe; Na2Oe = % Na2O + 0.658 x % K20), then it becomes irresponsible not to establish what reasonable precaution one should take. Professor Leming suggests using one of the following: 30% Class F fly ash, 50% GGBFS or 7% to 10% silica fume. My view is that one should prepare test specimens with the cement and aggregate to be used and then expose these both with and without at least two dosages of each of the various alternative materials (slag, pozzolan and lithium salts), so that the required dosage to control the expansion is established. Then, economic considerations can dictate the final selection. I would point out to the author that GGBFS is not a pozzolan and is not an admixture, but, rather, it is a latent hydraulic cement. An admixture is, by definition, a material other than hydraulic cement. I commend him for suggesting that aggregate producers should become more active in knowing about the reactivity of their products and the precautions needed to permit those products to be safely used in concrete. ? I am grateful to him for bringing these issues to my attention, as well as to the readers, and I am grateful for his discussion of several important factors in alkali-silica reactivity. Mr. Mather's discussion of the mechanism of alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) notes the critical role of the hydroxide ion. While the alkali hydroxides are highly soluble (reducing the solubility of the other primary hydroxide in pore solution, i.e., calcium hydroxide, and providing hydroxide ions that initiate alkali-silica reactivity), it is, as Mr. Mather quite correctly notes, the hydroxide ion that attacks the silica structure. This point was not clearly stated in my original article. As noted in the text, the requirements for mineral admixtures to mitigate or control ASR vary widely depending on the specific characteristics of the materials

INTRODUCTION The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, is the daring and unique concept developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer over-flows (CSOs). Phase I, primarily for pollution control, includes the tunnels, shafts, connecting sewers and structures. These Phase I facilities intercept, during wet weather events, the CSOs within the MWRDGC TARP service area. The tunnels and shafts provide temporary storage of the CSOs for subsequent treatment at Water Reclamation Plants (WRP) before discharging into waterways. Ultimately, upon completion of Phase II, the tunnels, located from 45 m(150 ft) to 100 m (330 ft) below ground, will convey the CSOs to reservoirs for storage until WRP capacity is available. Phase II, which includes the reservoirs, pumping facilities, additional tunnels and shafts, has been planned to serve a dual purpose. The reservoirs provide storage of excess flows during wet weather events, those beyond the WRP capacity. Following the wet weather events, the stored flows can be conveyed, at controlled rates, to the WRPs for full treatment. These excess flows previously would have resulted in both overflows into the waterways and eventually backups in the local sewer systems. The storage capacity of the reservoirs also will promote the full utilization of the conveyance capacity of the tunnels and shafts, which in turn results in optimizing the conveyance capacity of the existing sewer systems. Therefore pollution control is further enhanced by allowing for capture of a greater volume of CSOs and greatly minimizing backups in the local sewer systems. The TARP project consists of four systems: O’Hare, Mainstream, Des Plaines, and Calumet, covering a total area of 971 km2 (375 mi2) and serving the City of Chicago and 51neighboring communities as shown in Figure1. With only two contracts left before completion of the Phase I tunnels, the 12.7km (7.9mi) Torrence Avenue leg, to be awarded in 1997, and the 12.4km (7.7mi) Little Calumet leg unfunded as of yet, both part of the Calumet System, the pollution control phase of the project is now 86% complete (Table 1).

Industrial-scale test results indicate superior metallurgical performance of column flotation compared to conventional cell flotation for copper cleaning. A technical comparison of bubble generation systems for column flotation is made. Two types of bubble generation systems are considered: the filter-cloth type spargers and the Turbo-Air® sparger, which utilizes an air-water mixture fed to the column through injection tubes. Examples of the improved technical performance available with an external sparger system are presented using data from plant tests conducted for specific applications with several different mineral ores. INTRODUCTION Column flotation is now a valuable unit operation which mineral processing engineers employ in the design and operation of flotation circuits in nearly all mineral applications. The acceptance of columns in the mid- 1980s by the minerals industry was paralleled by a rigorous approach to developing a scientific understanding of the design, scale- up, and operation of column flotation units (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Since then, column flotation has become a standard unit of the cleaning stage in many new mineral concentrator projects and has replaced older mechanical cells to improve process efficiency. The size of column cells has continued to grow from the initial 0.9- to 2.1 -meter diameter range, and it is not uncommon to find column cells today being 2.7- to 3.6-meters in diameter. With the success of the smaller units, the scale-up to larger cells has been proven and demonstrated by the performance of the large-diameter cells (Murdock and Wyslouzil. 1991). The use of columns in flotation circuits has also been accompanied by developments in modelling. control, and optimization of column performance (Lee et al, 1991). The bubble generation system is the heart of the operation of column flotation cells. The most common methods for generating bubbles can be divided into two types: the internal and external spargers. Internal spargers are typically a porous material, such as sintered glass, porous rubber or filter-cloth, or maybe a single- or multi-nozzle sparger. External spargers implies that a gas and a liquid (either water or slurry) are brought into contact outside the column and that mixture is then introduced into the column. Several types of external spargers are available today, and innovative designs for externally mounted air sparging systems have been a significant factor in the successful application of columns. INTRODUCTION Tunneling machines were introduced into civil con¬struction in the 1800s, but their practical applications were not realized fully until the 1950s. As of 1977, tunneling machines were being used on most tunneling projects of substantial size. As in civil construction, the mining applications of tunneling machines have included long drives such as tunneling for long ore-body develop¬ment drifts, long haulage tunnels, longwall access drifts, and long crosscut developments. Tunneling machines ranging from 1.75-m (5.7-ft) to more than I1.0-m (36-ft) diam are available from several manufacturers; machines for mining applications generally have ranged between 1.75 and 6.0-m (5.7¬and 20.0-ft) diam. Tunneling machines usually operate at or near horizontal grades and are supported by a rail-haulage backup system. However, declines and inclines have been made using alternative backup equip¬ment. Either circular or shaped tunnels may be bored, depending upon the particular equipment used. Using tunneling machines to bore openings through rock offers several advantages over the use of the drilling and blasting technique. These advantages include a rapid advance, continuous operation, uniformity of the opening size, smooth walls, and safe working conditions. Compared to drilling and blasting, boring reduces the disturbance of adjacent rock, thereby reducing the ground-support requirements and the exposure to water inflows. The smooth walls provide natural arching and present minimum resistance to the flow of air. A tunneling machine should be considered a spe¬cialized mining tool that is well-suited to certain mining applications. Properly applied and sustained, a tunnel¬ing machine contributes to realizing substantial econo¬mies in the development of underground mines. All costs herein are expressed in 1977 US dollars, unless otherwise noted. The mention of trade names and manufacturers is not intended to imply an endorse¬ment of any specific equipment. TYPES OF TUNNELING MACHINES As listed in Table 1, five principal types of tunneling machines were being manufactured in 1977. Each type of machine offers a special solution to a specific mining problem. Although each of these types of machines is described herein, most of this chapter is devoted to the full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine that has demon¬strated the greatest production in both civil construction and mining applications. Full-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 1, a full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine consists of a rotating head that is fitted with rock-cutting tools and is forced into the tunnel face. This head is supported by a bearing on a structural support member that, in turn, is held in place by a hydraulically positioned wall-gripping mechanism. Both torque and thrust are reacted from the cutterhead, through the structural support and gripper mechanism, and to the tunnel wall. The rock cuttings fall to the invert at the tunnel face, and they are removed by means of cutterhead buckets or scoops that transfer the cuttings to a conveyor belt. After advancing the cutter¬head through a preset boring stroke, the tunneling machine is advanced by hydraulically pulling the gripper mechanism in from the tunnel walls, stroking forward, and resetting the gripper to the new forward position on the wall; the machine then is set for the next advance stroke. Full-face machines cut only circular openings. Ma¬chines with diameters as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) and as large as 6.1 m (20 ft) have been used in mining applica¬tions, excavating rock with unconfined compressive strengths in excess of 276 000 kPa (40,000 psi). Although special machines have been designed to turn on a radius of 30 m (100 ft) in both horizontal and vertical directions, the conveyors and backup sup¬port equipment generally limit tunneling machines to turns with a radius of more than 60 m (200 ft). The full-face rotary rock-tunneling machines have provided the fastest and most reliable production of any mining method or machine. These machines can be equipped to place any of a variety of ground-support systems, and they can be provided as "open" machines, as shown in Fig. 1, or as "shielded" machines, as shown in Fig. 2. The open machines have the advantage of allowing the ground to be supported as near to the tunnel face as possible. The shielded machines have been designed principally to allow placing precast con¬crete segments. The shielded machines completely pro¬tect the equipment and personnel at the heading, but they are economically limited to permanent long-life haulageways where full lining is required. Partial-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 3, the partial-face rotary tunneling machine is equipped with a cutterhead that rotates slowly at about 0.21 rad/s (2.0 rpm). The single-disk cutterhead produces the tunnel section shown in Fig. 4 by means of an oscillating motion. These machines work on the undercutting principle, and they are avail¬able in spring-line dimensional increments of 0.1 m (0.32 ft) from 1.5 to 2.1 m (5.0 to 7.0 ft); the vertical dimensions are 2.4 to 3.2 m (8.0 to 10.5 ft), respec¬tively. Depending upon the tunnel width, the cutterhead disk may be fitted with from 8 to 16 drag-bit cutters. Penetration is achieved by means of hydraulic rams that force the tungsten-carbide bits into the rock mass. The operation is cyclic, with cutting occurring only on the upstroke. On the downstroke, the rotating cutter¬head draws the fallen muck from the invert into the panzer-type conveyor for rearward transfer. This feature allows time to either reposition ore cars or to exit the tunnel with muck trains while the machine is cutting, as shown in Fig. 5. Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. Recently, the North American mining industry experienced a severe recession, forcing managers to take dramatic steps to cut costs and compete in the difficult international market. Some of these steps were closing mines, reducing work forces, renegotiating wage agreements, and purchasing the most productive equipment. Managers are now looking beyond these traditional avenues and are focusing more on advanced technology. In the present environment, it is essential that mine operators obtain the maximum use of capital expended on equipment. However, mine workers do not obtain maximum efficiency or productivity from equipment because the adverse and hazardous mine environment impedes human performance. Also, the efficient use of large, complex machines calls for levels of precision that many times are beyond the capability of even highly trained miners. A possible solution to this problem is a machine that mines without operators - autonomous mining machines. However, numerous problems confront researchers who are attempting to develop such equipment. Some mining tasks are not always composed of a series of cyclic motions readily performed by factory floor robots. In addition, mining takes place in the geological environment where conditions are highly variable and unpredictable. As a result, these machines must be able to sense and adapt to variations in operating tasks and environment. Considerable autonomous vehicle research has been completed, especially for defense. However, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has not advanced to practical application yet (King, 1988) and mining research is necessary in areas: representing mining specific knowledge; •analyzing and reasoning about sensor data in the mining environment; and •discovering completely new mining methods or new approaches to existing methods that become apparent when we remove the constraints imposed by the necessity of human operators. A specific machine, the LHD, can be used to show the problems for researchers who are attempting to develop autonomous machines for mining. This author chose the LHD because it can borrow concepts developed for autonomous navigation by military programs. But considerable mining research is also required. Furthermore, studies done at the Henderson mine, in Colorado, show autonomous LHD &apos;s promise cost and safety benefits (King, 1988). At Henderson, LHDs load ore from draw points, tram to an ore pass, dump and return, or switch to another draw point. An autonomous LHD must sense vehicle position along the route, relate sensor data to stored-map information, to determine location, follow drift center lines, plan paths between dump position and initiate appropriate control commands, sense vehicle operating status and vehicle health, key on features or targets for special tasks like high speed turns, perform end of travel tasks (loading and dumping), and detect and avoid obstacles. These goals are similar to those for shuttle cars, trucks, and front-end loaders. Therefore, much of the technology is transferable. Each Henderson LHD extracts six to 40 dippers from each of a series of draw points. The LHD transports the ore to an ore pass within 55 m (180 ft) of the draw point, making the longest round trip 110 m (360 ft). The LHDs have very fast hydraulic dumping and loading systems that reduce the round trip cycle to less than one minute. Even though the LHD is capable of 500 trips per shift, the average production is 300 dippers. Man trip and lunch reduce available operating time to 6.5 hours per shift. Mucking difficulties (setting large boulders aside), operator breaks for activities like talking shop, and cleaning and smoothing roads further reduce operating time. Supervised autonomy can reduce the number of operating units by increasing operating time per shift since computer controlled machines can operate during lunch and between shifts and reduce operator errors. If dippers per shift increase from 300 to 350 (long-range goals are 500 dippers per shift), constant production requires only 10 operating LHDs and two spares. Manpower requirements drop from 24 to four by controlling five machines from one workstation. A review of technology available from the Autonomous Land Vehicle, the Advanced Ground Vehicle Technology, the Ground Surveillance Robot, and other programs, show the following differences between others work and mining industry needs: •If we focus initially on mobile haulage vehicles, we can navigate from a map. We do not need to explore. •We can modify the environment to reduce the navigation requirements. •We have a harsher environment than any of the research programs have encountered. •Our equipment must operate faster and more precisely than present AVs. •Our equipment must operate reliably over long periods of time. •We must have better onboard machine health monitoring and diagnostics. •The AV programs do not address geosensing. •The major AV programs are not cost-effective. For example, we cannot afford the computer power for robust image processing, yet. To computer control an LHD, we must replace the guidance and monitoring skills of experienced operators with sensors, computing hardware, interfaces, and several software mod¬ules. INTRODUCTION Perspective The phrase "minerala resource appraisal" is widely and loosely used to refer to any quantitative description of a naturally occurring source of fuels, metals, or nonmetals. This leads to confusion when mineral resources are so conceived, for the term refers generically to information on stocks-mineral endowment, resources, reserves, and potential supply-that differ in ways that are important in economic analysis. Mineral resource and other stock measures- these are not flows, e.g., the supply of minerals-have precise technical meanings, which are presented in this paper. Quotation marks are used to separate the nontechnical use of mineral resource from the technical. The term appraisal also leads to some con- fusion because it too is loosely used. When an appraisal employs probability and statistical methods, the appropriate term is estimationb, not appraisal or assessment. This paper presents a conceptual framework or mineral resource information which renders technical, or well defined, relationships of mineral endowment to physical attributes of the earth&apos;s crust and earth processes, as distinct from economic values, and identifies estimation approaches that lead to different economic measures of stocks and flows. An important result of this approach is the distinction between the relevance of mineral resource information to economic and policy issues about potential sup- ply (stocks) and dynamic supply (flows across time). With regard to policy analysis, this paper recognizes that mineral resource information has a cost as well as an imputed value. Such a treatment implies that there is an optimum state of resource ignorance, or enlightenment, for a given policy issue and that the relevant economic issue is the selection of that information strategy and appraisal methodology that is indicated by the optimum state. Until the initiation of the OPEC oil embargo, the demand for information on mineral re- sources and potential supply was limited to occasional studies commissioned by Congress or the President of the United States. In these, mineral and energy resources remained loosely de- scribed. When quantitative estimates were supplied, they were not rigorously made, and the estimates and the methodology accordingly escaped close scrutiny. Usually, neither the geo- logical nor economic bases for estimation were carefully described or critically examined. The imposition by OPEC nations of the embargo on oil caused a sudden change in the public and scientific demands for specific &apos;resource" appraisals, especially of oil and of uranium. These

INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal cleaning by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken the loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Netherlands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War II in the laboratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15-tph (13.6 t/h) pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of Fuel in London.51 In April 1945, operation of this pilot plant was observed by H. F. Yancey, who was so impressed with the potential of the cyclone process that, on his return to the United States, a research program on the cyclone was immediately started by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). This work led to an AIME paper in 1946 in which the first details of cyclone operation on American coals were made available.52 Commercial adoption of the cyclone proceeded in Europe, initially in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. In the United States, where coal is less costly and most of the coals are easy to clean and respond well to simpler cleaning processes, the first cyclone plant was not built until 1961.53 THEORY Before discussing the theory of a dense-medium cyclone, a brief description may be helpful to some readers who are not familiar with its basic operation. In a typical dense-medium cyclone, illustrated in Fig.7-51 a mixture of medium and raw coal enters tangentially near the top of the cylindrical section, thus forming a strong vortical flow. The refuse moves along the wall of the cyclone and is discharged through the underflow orifice. The washed coal moves toward the longitudinal axis of the cyclone and passes through the overflow orifice, or vortex finder, to the overflow chamber. Washed coal is discharged from this chamber, usually through a tangential outlet.

"The proliferation of unconventional gas well development in the Northern Appalachian coalfields has raised a number of mine safety concerns. Unconventional wells, which extract gas from deep shale formations, are characterized by gas volumes and pressures that are significantly higher than those observed at many conventional wells. The gas is composed largely of methane as well as other hydrocarbons. Hundreds of planned and actively producing wells penetrate protective coal pillars or barriers within active mine boundaries, including chain pillars located between longwall panels. Gas released from a well damaged by mining-induced ground movements could pose a risk to miners by flowing into the mine atmosphere. The mining-induced ground movements that may cause well damage include conventional subsidence, non-conventional subsidence (e.g., bedding plane slip), pillar failure, and floor instability. This paper describes the known risk factors for each of the four failure mechanisms. It includes a framework that can guide the risk assessment process when mining takes place near gas or oil wells.INTRODUCTIONSouthwestern Pennsylvania has served for centuries as a producer of coal, oil, and natural gas. Coal mines were first developed in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam in the 1760s, with the first recorded mine in 1761 being the Fort Pitt Mine (Edmunds, 2002). Natural gas was introduced to the region when the Haymaker Well in Murrysville, Pennsylvania experienced a blowout on November 3, 1878. Although it was originally drilled prospecting for oil, it produced an estimated 30 million cubic feet per day of natural gas. Without well controls or pipeline infrastructure in place, it burst into flames and lit the night sky for over a year. Soon after, the Penn Fuel Company continued development of the Murrysville gas field and is credited with making Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the first major city in the U.S. to have natural gas supplied for home and industrial uses. “Natural gas is king in Pittsburgh,” proclaimed an October 18, 1885, article in the New York Times headlined “Value of Natural Gas, Its Use Clarifies the Atmosphere at Pittsburgh” (AOGHS, 2018). By the early 1900s, coal, oil, and natural gas production had reached the southern extents of Pennsylvania in Greene County. The county had first produced oil in 1886, and shortly after began producing natural gas in 1890. By 1906, over 1,300 wells had been drilled (Stone and Clapp, 1906)."

INTRODUCTION Historical mining activities in the Robinson Mining District, in the Egan Range of east-central Nevada (White Pine County), resulted in five open pits (Veteran, Tripp, Liberty, Ruth, and Kimbley Pits), several large mine-waste dumps, and numerous underground workings developed for copper, zinc, gold, lead-silver, and manganese (Figure 1). Groundwater percolating downward through the copper sulfide ores produced a blanket-like supergene zone enriched in copper, which has been one of the primary objectives of mining since the early part of this century. To obtain permits for future operation, an EIS was conducted that evaluated future pit- lake chemistry, groundwater quantity and quality issues, transport of water and solutes subjacent to a proposed tailings impoundment, and the potential for waste dump acidification. AREA HYDROGEOLOGY The mine area is on a ridgeline draining to the Steptoe Valley to the east and to the White River Valley to the West. Precipitation in the Robinson Mining District ranges from a low of 15 cm (6 in.) per year in the valley to more than 50 cm (20 in.) per year in the surrounding mountains. Evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation, leading to a net loss of water from the basin as either surface flow or underflow to the north at Currie, Nevada (Eakin et al. 1967). The White River Valley, which lies to the south and west of the mine area, includes approximately 4,200 km2 (1,620 mi2) of the upper part of the Colorado River Basin. This valley is 112 km (70 mi) long, 32-48 km (20-30 mi) wide, and like Steptoe Valley, evaporation and transpiration exceed precipitation (Maxey and Eakin 1949). The local groundwater flow system in the Robinson Mining District and the proposed mine area is dominated by two main components: (1) a groundwater mound or high between the Ruth Pit and Murry Springs, and (2) a shallow groundwater flow divide that follows the ridge crest south of Ruth, which contains the Veteran and Tripp pits. Besides the alluvium, the main hydrostratigraphic units controlling groundwater flow are limestones, shales, and sandstones, along with the intrusive quartz monzonite stocks. Introduction Flotation is a recovery process that utilizes natural or chemically-introduced hydrophobicity of minerals to separate ore from gangue by attaching the ore particles to bubbles. Flotation has been known since 1906, when it was patented by E. L. Sulman, H. G. K. Pickard and John Ballot. Flotation&apos;s first documented plant use was in 1911, when it was used on gravity tailings from a zinc plant. Cyanide leaching was first patented in 1887. Most early precious metals flotation was linked to lead or copper concentrates. Most precious metal flotation is linked to sulfide recovery and utilizes such reagents as xanthates, dithiophosphates and thiocarbanilides. But the involvement of flotation in precious metals recovery does not have to be limited to active flotation of the gold and silver bearing minerals. Flotation can be used to remove interfering minerals, such as carbon, or cyanicides, such as copper, arsenic bearing minerals or other cyanide complexing minerals. Cyanide Leaching The use of cyanide to recover precious metals is the backbone of the industry. The various recovery processes that use cyanide are: 1. Leaching-Counter Current Decantation(CCD) Merrill-Crowe 2. Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) 3. Carbon-in-leach (CIL) 4. Vat leaching 5. Heap leaching These processes are selected depending on ore grade, ore leaching characteristics, reserve size and capital limitations. Ore grade is used as the first criteria to determine the type of cyanide plant required. However, the reserve size can determine whether a ground ore alternative is used. The ore leaching characteristics may indicate that the higher recovery, associated with a process that employs grinding, is the only economic recovery alternative. There are some extremely large leaching plants with grades that would be non-economic for some existing heap leach plants. Many factors, such as strip ratios, metal recovery and reserve size, determine what the ultimate plant design will be. The exact processing scheme that is used, is a multifaceted decision matrix, which gives the process metallurgist some job security. Precious Metal Recovery Using Flotation Flotation recovery can conceivably be used on any ore that has been ground. Many operations utilize gravity separation on the ore to remove native gold from the ore prior to sending it to cyanide leaching. Maintaining stable high walls can be a challenging task. Complex geological and structural features, alteration zones, rock mass properties, and hydrogeological conditions must be well understood to design a safe mining environment. Economic considerations must also be taken into account as the mine operator must provide ore deliveries and protect reserves. However, even when good engineering practices are followed, and proper blasting and mining techniques are implemented, slope movements may still occur. When these slope instabilities are minor, the mine is often able to continue operations with minimal impacts on safety or production. When these occurrences are excessive and coupled with high rates of movement, a robust monitoring system is crucial to continuing mining activities while protecting personnel. This paper summarizes the approach an open pit mine in Nevada took as excessive and rapid high-wall movement was experienced in an integral area. Creative mining approaches, combined with slope monitoring radar technology, were utilized to maintain safe and successful mining activities despite active movement that exceeded an average velocity of 30 inches per day.
