"A comprehensive analysis of the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems has been investigated. Cations chosen for this analysis included groups 1A and 2A, rare-earth elements and other common transition metal ions such as Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Ag+, Cd2+, U4+, UO2 2+, Hg2+, Al3+ and Zn2+. The Newton-Raphson technique was used to calculate and plot various metal species over a wide range of pH. This study has clearly shown that by adjusting the concentration of OH-, the separation of Fe from Mn, U from V, Ce and Eu from other rare-earth elements, and In from Sn is possible. The effects of hydrated metal ions on the separation and removal of various metals from each other under various conditions is discussed.IntroductionThe primary purpose of hydrometallurgical processing is to extract, remove and purify various metals from diverse sources. Hydrometallurgists are frequently preoccupied by the extraction of cations in metallic form, but overlook the important role anions play in such processes. A proper choice of anions can determine the fate of successful extraction, removal and purification of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2005; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), and also separation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974) of cations from various solutions.In this study, the authors have examined some of the effects that anions play in various solutions. The anion considered in this study was the first hydroxide, OH-. Other anions, such as Cl-, Br-, I-, and CN-, will be dealt with in the second part of the series of two papers."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research related to unconventional gas wells positioned in abutment pillars associated with active longwall mining in Southwestern PA. The Ventilation and Explosion Prevention Team at NIOSH is working toward predicting and characterizing a hypothetical casing breach and its effect on the safety and health of mine workers, gas well workers, and the general public. An important aspect of this research is to distinguish coalbed gas from shale gas in the mine environment as an indicator of a casing breach. Another noncoal gas source exists in the region in the form of underground gas storage fields which also have the potential to migrate towards mine workings. During a potential gas breach, the addition of excess natural gas to coal mine environments will exceed the anticipated ventilation loading and can create a mine explosion hazard. A methodology has been developed to distinguish these gas sources. Gas samples from the three sources were analyzed by gas chromatography, and interpretive methods were applied to distinguish the populations graphically and statistically. Bivariate plots using the hydrocarbon index and the normalized molecular ratios showed that the sources occupy different regions of the graphs. All samples of non-coal gas contained under 2% CO2, and all coal samples included greater than this amount. A multivariate T-squared (T2) test analysis relating comparing data in pairs showed a low p-value (dimensionality parameter) and a high T2 test statistic for all comparisons, indicating that these sources are different and distinct gas populations. Ultimately, stakeholders from the mining and gas production industries can utilize this method to identify gas sources and a potential casing breach.

Abstract - This paper examines the ventilation network problem from a view point of solving a system of B equations in B unknowns, where B is the number o f branches in the network. Based on Kirchhoff s current and voltage laws, the solution to the general ventilation network problem must satisfy B network equations. In this paper, the air quantities and control-device pressures are chosen as variables and are grouped into B dependent variables (unknowns) and B independent variables, resulting in a system of B equations in B unknowns. Based on whether their variables are dependent or independent, the network branches are classified into f our types: five d, non-fixed, p-fixed, and q fixed. The ventilation network problem may include all four types of branches. There are .some conditions under which the problem as defined in this manner does not have a unique solution. To have a unique solution, the Jocabian matrix of the equations m us! he nonsingular. It then follows that: • the number of branches with independent air quantities must be less than or equal to the number of chords with respect to a spanning tree; •the subnetwork of branches with independent air quantities must not contain any cutset; and •the suhnetwork of branches with dependent control-device pressures must not contain any cutset. These three conditions must be met regardless of the values for the variables. In addition to the problem formulation, a solution procedure applying the Newton (or Newton-Raphson) method is outlined and illustrated with an example problem.

This paper deals with theoretical considerations and practical applications of ventilation network calculations, based on mass flow rates and performed by computer simulation in our deepest operating mine - Creighton. The paper also deals with natural ventilation. In the usually accepted air-flow theory, the air is assumed to behave like an incompresssible medium. This introduces considerable error where temperature and pressure changes are great. Therefore, any study of the air flow in deep mines, must take into account compressibility. Basing ventilation calculations on mass flow allows a distinction to be made between air leakage and such quantity changes which occur due to air density changes. The energy which is required to convey one pound of air through a mine can be obtained by adding all head losses hL (ft-lb) of the ventilation paths through which the air flows. However, this total energy will not be correctly expressed in a compressible fluid by summing all pressure losses PL = hL x d (ft-lb/ft3 = lb/ft2) d = density. There is a law of mass conservation, but no law of volume conservation. Natural ventilation is caused by the conversion of heat into mechanical energy and not by the difference in upcast and downcast densities, as often believed. In an existing mine natural ventilation can be determined correctly by plotting a pressure volume diagram and measuring the area ? [ ] vdP = hN, where v = specific volume, or by measuring the sum of all friction losses and work provided by a fan. These procedures are tedious. The natural ventilation head (hN) can be approximated by the equaticn hN =[ ] tdZ. Where T is the average absolute temperature, t air temperature and Z elevation. In Prof. R. Greuer's computer program this determination of hN is automatically done for every mesh of the network.

Discussion by N. Standish and P.N. Standish Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage-"the bottom line evaluator." Correct. Theory Definitions Coal bulk density is the ratio of the mass of a collection of discrete particles to the volume that it occupies (ASA, 1980). There can be no possible argument about this definition. Mass and volume are readily measured both in laboratory and large scale installations. So, to obtain the bulk density, one simply divides the measured mass by the measured volume. It is here that we come unstuck as everybody who has ever had to reconcile book values with the measured stock tonnages knows. Where does the problem originate? Almost invariably in a too casual a reading of the above definition and the words "a collection of discrete particles." The word collection means "a number of objects collected or gathered together, viewed as a whole" (The Oxford English Dictionary, 1989). The Henderson mine is a large continuous panel caving operation in central Colorado. The orebody is roughly 760 m by 910 m and will be extracted from two production levels. Each level is divided into three north - south panels 244 m to 317 m wide. The general arrangement of a production level and its associated undercut drifts is shown in Figure 1. The production drifts (3.6 m by 3.7 m) are spaced 24 m apart center to center and have undercut drifts (3.4 m by 3.8 m) 17 m directly above them. The production drifts are interconnected with drawpoint crosscuts (4 m by 4.3 m) driven on 12 m centers. Drawpoint crosscuts receive substantial brow steel and concrete support prior to undercutting. The brow steel is a 15 cm by 46 cm wide flange beam with a 2.5 cm wear plate to box in the 'cave' side of the beam. The concrete is a minimum of 0.3 m thick and the batch design results in 27 500 kPa strength. The finished drawpoint opening is 3.7 m by 3.2 m with a choke area of 3.7 m by 2.4 m. (Figure la) Undercutting and bell formation is accomplished by blasting rings of 7.6 cm holes drilled from the undercut drifts. The rings have a burden of 2.0 m and six rings develop one complete bell.

The development of flotation machines since the first industrial use of the process can be divided into three stages. The first, up to about 1930, was marked by diversity in the means for contacting floatable mineral with the air/ water interface and for generating the interface, as well as in cell design. By 1927 Taggart (1) could list 170 patents covering flotation cells, and he mentioned dozens which were or had been in operation. He divided cells into eight categories according to design, type of separating interface, and where in the cell and how separation took place. These were: (1) Film or skin flotation with wet or dry oiling of surfaces; (2) pulp body process with bubbles generated chemically by pressure reduction, by vacuum or by boiling; (3) agitation-froth processes involving local supersaturation with air; (4) bubble column; (5) pneumatic; (6) cascade; (7) subaeration; and (8) combination and miscellaneous types and processes. Most widely used then were the agitation-froth, sub- aeration, pneumatic types. By 1943 a significant reduction in categories had occurred to the two main divisions of mechanical and pneumatic cells according to whether agitation and aeration were (a) by an impeller with or without compressed air, or (b) by compressed air alone. Cells at that time were still relatively small; the Morenci Concentrator completed in 1942 used 432 1.7m3 (60 cu ft) Fagergrens for roughing 45,000 and later up to 55,000 t/d.

Accurate positioning information is a central step in the process of increasing automation and digitalization in the mining industry. Underground mine environments are prime examples for GNSS-denied environments that pose several additional challenges for the employed indoor positioning system (IPS). This work presents an ultra-wideband (UWB)- based system specifically tailored for underground mine environments. Initially, the UWB technology is reviewed and basic concepts of IPS are explained. Both software and hardware are described in detail, including positioning algorithms, electrical circuitry and the mining-compatible enclosure. Finally, the results from field tests in an underground mine are presented and positioning performance and the influence of dilution of precision (DOP) on positioning results are empirically evaluated. The results show that the localization errors are mostly below 1 m. Individual zones of high localization errors are suspected to be caused by noise interference. Significant DOP influence due to the mining drift geometry can be confirmed. The system shows promising localization results for different mining applications, while influences negatively impacting the accuracy are presented as items for future research.

Hydrometallurgy has a well-known and established role in the production of manganese metal (1) and manganese compounds, including battery grade manganese dioxide (2). Also, several leaching processes have been developed and applied at various times for the recovery of manganese from low grade ores (3). Recently, interest in the hydrometallurgy of manganese has been stimulated by the problems presented in the processing of sea nodules (4). Fumes and dusts from the ferro-manganese furnaces also offer a potential field for the application of manganese leaching techniques (5). In treating low grade manganese ores a major requirement of the leaching process is that it should dissolve manganese from a mixture of manganese and iron oxides. The most selective reagent for this purpose is ammonium carbamate applied after preliminary pyrometallurgical reduction of the ore (6). Since soluble carbamate complexes of the postulated type (7) are formed by both manganous and ferrous, but by neither manganic nor ferric, ions, selectivety of manganese leaching is achieved by control of the reduction operation to yield, essentially MnO and Fe304? A potential improvement to this two step process would be to simultaneously reduce and selectively leach the manganese in one hydrometallurgical operation. This possibility has been experimentally studied and the results are described below. Early in 1977, Amoco Production Company and Houston Chemicals, a subsidiary of Pittsburg Plate Glass (PPG) Industries, started producing iodine commercially in northwestern Oklahoma. This is significant because it is the first plant in over 40 years to be built in the United States with iodine as its sole commercial product. With the exception of a limited amount of iodine produced by Dow Chemical in Michigan, the United States is dependent upon imports from Chile and Japan for its iodine needs. The two million pounds of iodine produced annually from the Woodward plant will supply over one-third of the United States' requirements. Routine analysis of subsurface brines by the Formation Water Lab at the Amoco Production Company Research Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, revealed unusually high concentrations of certain potentially economic minerals. Investigations determined that, of the minerals in question, iodine appeared to offer the best potential. The brines in question are located in the Morrow sands (basal Pennsylvanian) at a depth of 7,175 to 7.400 feet, in an area where Amoco has been active in a gas play for the past 20 years. The regional iodine concentration ranges from 10 to 700 ppm and averages around 300 ppm with the project area. The project is located 8 miles north and slightly east of the town of Woodward, where the well-developed, porous, and permeable sands of the Woodward trench contain large volumes of brine.

Placer material, regardless of the value of gold, tin, titanium, diamonds or other value mineral it contains, remains worthless until the valuable constituent is separated from the bulk of the material. This separation is no mean task when considering that a gold placer containing 0.01 to 0.03 oz/yd3 of gold, which is the range of grade of typical placer deposits; yes, 1:3,000,000! It is a miracle that gold placer mining has ever been profitable. Added to the situation of minute quantities of gold are several other problems, such as the gold often being very finely divided, the association of boulders and clay, and running and/or ground water. As each placer deposit is individual and distinctive, many factors have to be considered in planning the method for gold recovery from the alluvial deposit. Previous chapters have shown that in the exploration and sampling stage, some knowledge of the amount of each size of coarse and fine material which occurs in the deposit as well as the size distribution of the discrete gold particles is determined. Unless informed to the contrary, as a general rule of thumb, plant designers will consider that 40 percent of the material will pass through a 5/8-inch screen or punched plate hole. During 1983, The Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company's lost-time-incidence rate was 8.1, equal to the average for underground bituminous operators. How- ever, one half of all lost-time injuries were low back, back and neck related. In reviewing these results, we determined that substantial improvement could be made. We investigated existing back schools and the possibility of opening an in-house clinic. In September 1984, we began The Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company's Back Care Program. The objectives of the program are to reduce the number of back injuries incurred at the work site, hasten recovery time, decrease medical and workers' compensation costs and provide the employee with a thorough understanding of his problem. A state-of-the-art clinic capable of treating injuries to the spine and extremities has been established at the work site. The clinic is staffed by a licensed physical therapist and is offered to all employees on a voluntary basis under physician referral. The approach to treatment is multi-phasic. For the typical patient, the initial goal is to reduce pain and correct dysfunction. Treatment modalities such as auto-traction, extension exercises, ultra sound and moist heat are frequently used. During this period the patient is given extensive education regarding his problem. As soon as more vigorous activity can be tolerated, a work-hardening pro- gram consisting of job simulation activities designed to improve flexibility, strength and functional capability is begun.

Caterpillar unveiled a new dozer, the new Cat D10T2 dozer, that builds on the success the company has had with its D10T model. The newest version of the dozer includes refinements to its power train, automated controls and structures. The result, the company said, is high productivity with superior fuel efficiency, reliable operation with long-lived structures, as well as enhanced access for service technicians and operators. The D10T2 uses the latest load-sensing hydraulics technology combined with Cat advanced engine controls to maximize the amount of material moved for every drop of fuel burned. Improved filtration protects the fuel system, hydraulic system and power train oil system to help ensure high reliability and minimal machine downtime. Refined large structures, such as redesigned track roller frames, deliver longer service before rebuilds. Improved access and egress features enhance safety and productivity of technicians and operators, and optional powered access systems and platforms enable configuring the D10T2 for the site. Caterpillar offers the D10T2 with two variations of the Cat C27 engine with ACERT Technology. One version is U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 Final certified, and the other is capable of achieving emission levels equivalent to EPA Tier 2 standards. Both engine configurations produce net power of 447 kW (600 hp) in forward gears and 538 kW (722 hp) in reverse gears. The engine controller automatically adjusts power output based on the direction of travel. With the new system, the D10T2 has about 20 percent more power in reverse compared to its predecessor model. The result is faster cycle times and greater productivity in certain applications. The D10T2 is suited for a variety of applications including mining, heavy construction and bulk materials handling.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of ventilation on the performance of automatic sprinkler systems in extinguishing wood crib fires. Experiments were conducted at airflows of 0, 0.76, 1.5, 2.5, and 4.1 m/s. Two experiments were conducted at each airflow, using 74° C fast response pendent sprinklers in one experiment and 74° C fast response horizontal sidewall sprinklers in the other experiment. In the experiments at airflows of 0 and 0.76 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 m upstream and downstream of the fire. The sprinkler directly above the fire was the only sprinkler to operate with no discernible difference in the suppression capability of the pendent and horizontal sidewall sprinklers. In the experiments at airflows of 1.5 and 2.5 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 and 4.8 m downstream of the fire. The sprinkler located 2.4 m downstream was the only sprinkler to operate with the horizontal sidewall sprinkler being more effective in extinguishing the wood crib fire. The average response times of the sprinklers at airflows of 0.76, 1.5, and 2.5 m/s were 3-1/2 times the average response time of the sprinklers at 0 m/s. The results of this study will help enhance the safety of the nation's miners.

Introduction The Harzwasserwerke, a public body of the Federal State of Lower Saxony, supplies drinking water to an area bordered by Braunschweig, Bremen, the Northern and the Western edges of the Harz-Mountains. From the very beginning in 1928, the Harzwasserwerke have been systematically constructing reservoirs in the western Harz which have the function of collecting and storing the frequently occuring flood waters as well as providing drinking water. The Grane-Reservoir with a capacity of 45 Million cu.m., the last of the big reservoirs, was built in 1968-1970. A system of connecting tunnels effectively enlarges the natural catchment area of this reservoir and the surplus waters of the Oker and Radau valleys - where floods occur particularly during the spring - are being conducted to the reservoir. By building the 4.800 m long "Radau-Tunnel", the waters of the Radau valley will now also be used more efficiently and its surplus waters will pass to the Grane Reservoir via this new tunnel and the Oker-Grane-Tunnel which was finished in 1970. The Project The Radaustollen has been planned and put out to tender by the Harzwasserwerke as a conventional "Freispiegelstollen". The horseshoe profile has a cross-section of 8 m2. Lining was required only in disturbed rock areas; lining of the whole tunnel was not necessary. The gradient of the tunnel is 4 % 0 rising = 25 m over the total length of 4.800 m.

With the inauguration of the open pit operation in Bagdad, plans were formulated for a large scale leaching operation. Dump stockpiling was started almost immediately, but actual production was not initiated until the spring of 1961. Like all neophytes, we started something about which, on a commercial scale, we knew next to nothing, either dump preparation or leach procedure, and as a consequence, we are still paying the piper. True, we had been through an extensive laboratory pilot program, but it soon became apparent that there was considerably more to increasing solution volumes than simple multiplication. Had we initially possessed our present acumen, the Cyprus Bagdad plant could be operated more efficiently and at a better profit. During the past several years, the art of dump leaching of copper has improved in many ways, primarily because of the application of scientific principles gleaned from general mining practice. Rigid pH control and the use of atomic absorption techniques for rapid," accurate assaying have probably played a leading role in this respect, although we cannot overlook the other sophisticated electronic controls lending improvement to acid addition and pumping, better piping materials, and lastly, the more efficient use of our pregnant liquors. Thin too, the years of experience have given us a greater understanding of dump behavior in general; and, we can, to a greater extent, measure, predict, and avoid some of the idiosyncrasies inherent in every dump. However, it is my firm belief that we will still be confronted with unexplainable dump behavior as long as we are involved in leaching. We have found our dump to be a wonderful money bank, but one that is capable of yielding a wildly fluctuating profit.

The application of computers for control purposes in hydrometallurgical processes is not as well-established as in mineral processing plants. This is not only due to the comparatively new development of large-scale application of hydrometallurgy and the relatively small number of operating plants, but also due to some of the basic dynamic characteristics of hydro- metallurgical processes., Basically there is little difference in the development and application of digital control techniques in hydrometallurgical plants from those techniques widely in use throughout the chemical process industry and in nonslurry applications; particularly for those cases involving liquid streams only, the primary sensing elements are essentially the same. On-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis is a well-established method for determination of metal content in the process streams, and standard equipment is used for the measurement and control of pH, flow, density, temperature, pressure, and other variables. Nevertheless, the high proportion of corrosive slurry streams at elevated temperature and pressure poses a challenge to the instrument engineer concerned with developing long-life, reliable instrumentation. One major difference and potential problem area in developing control systems for hydro- metallurgical processes is related to the very long time constants which are common in the larger plant. In these circumstances, it is important to define the overall control objectives very carefully and be prepared to allow for considerable drift in intermediate variables. In larger projects with many control loops the general advantage of lower costs compared to conventional analog instrumentation can be confidently expected. Also in most cases, the process analysis necessary to design and specify a comprehensive computer control system and the increased operator involvement in implementing digital control systems yield additional benefits due to the increased understanding of the dynamic characteristics of the process.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 15th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards banquet on Saturday, Dec. 6,1997 in Tucson, AZ, preceeding the Arizona Conference of SME. The Mining Foundation's Hall of Fame, located in Tucson, recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by individuals and industry partners. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society at 949 E. Second St. in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining history are chosen by the Hall of Fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation also initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. And in 1995, an award was instituted to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee is James R. Moffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. He will be present as guest of honor and featured speaker. The Hall of Fame will induct John V. Dorr, metallurgist and chemical engineer. Also inducted will be Frederick L. Ransome, a geologist. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Hugo T. Dummett, senior vice president, Exploration BHP Minerals, and Spencer R. Titley, professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to the Colorado School of Mines for its continued support to the mining industry through education and research. Douglas W. Fuerstenau (DWF) grew up on a farm and in several small communities in rural South Dakota during the depression years, where he learned the value of hard work. Working hard can produce results but being clever and hardworking will give you a bright future. In his later school years, Fuerstenau’s family moved to Rapid City where his intellectual curiosity and capacity helped him graduate with a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1949. His technical interests led to graduate studies and completion of a master’s degree from the Montana School of Mines in 1950 and Sc.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1953.

Minnesota is a major mining state. This statement is not a dream or stretch goal but is a fact. As reported in a recent edition of Mining Engineering magazine, Minnesota ranks as the third largest state in terms revenues generated from nonfuels mineral production. The vibrancy of the mining sector in Minnesota can be attributed to several factors. The northeastern corner of the state is home to Minnesota?s iron range, one of North America?s largest deposits of iron ore. Iron ore from Minnesota is a strategic resource that has been [ ] instrumental to the nation?s development ? 90 percent of the iron used to build ships and planes during World War II came from Minnesota. Taconite pellets now produced from openpit mines on the iron range are shipped to steel mills worldwide.
