Construction of Shaft 17B-1, a part of The New York City water supply system, required an excavation of approximately 38 m (123 ft) through water-bearing overburden soil and more than 152 m (500 ft) of gneiss bedrock to make a connection to Water Tunnel No. 3. Ground freezing was the specified method to provide temporary earth support and ground water control for the overburden material. The ground freezing process relied on a supplemental geotechnical investigation and comprehensive laboratory testing of the frozen soil to evaluate the potential long-term creep behavior of the soil and the elimination of a temporary lining system. This paper describes that process as well as the drilling and installation methods of the ground freezing system. Additionally, the methodical system of excavation and insulation is discussed that permitted a safe and timely excavation followed by the installation of the permanent concrete liner.

"INTRODUCTION The Lisbon Valley Mining Co LLC (LVMC) operates the Lisbon Valley Mine located in SE Utah. The mine includes 3 open pits, 150-acre heap leach pad, and solvent extraction electro winning plant (SX/EW). Approximately 25MM tons of ore has been mined since 2005. The ore is stacked on the leach pad to an average height of 55 feet and occurs as a blend of crushed material (minus 2”) and run-of-mine (minus 24”). The host rocks include Dakota and Burro Canyon Sandstones. Copper occurs finely disseminated in this material at an average grade of 0.46%. Minerology is 63% sulfide, 27% oxide, and 10% insoluble. Total inventory mined through 2016 is approximately 230 MM lbs. METALLURGICAL CONSTRAINTS Copper production is constrained by areas of low permeability ore and geochemical issues, including acid consumption. The intrinsic permeability the ore ranges from 10-2 to 1 Darcy. This permeability does not permit sufficient aeration by natural convection, therefore oxygen transport is largely limited to the mass of oxygen that can remain dissolved in leachates. As a result, greater than 50MM lbs of copper remains in inventory and occurs secondary sulfides, including chalcocite, covellite, and bornite. BIOLEACHING FUNDAMENTALS Due to the higher activation energies of secondary sulfides, notably covellite and bornite, a strong oxidant is needed to remove an electron from the metal-sulfide lattice and release the copper cation into the sulfate solution. This process occurs most efficiently using the strong oxidant ferric iron (Fe3+). Ferrous iron can be oxidized to ferric iron by oxygen via chemical oxidation or biologically; which was measured to occur 500,000 times faster when using microbes versus oxygen.1 The microbes that oxidize ferrous iron (Fe2+) to ferric iron are naturally abundant and will develop biomass when appropriate conditions and nutrients present themselves. Most nutrients are provided by the ore/irrigation (P,N,Mg, Ca & Fe2+) while the others (O2 and CO2) are provided by air. In most cases, oxygen transfer is the rate limiting step during copper sulfide leaching. 1 Lacey & Lawson 1970 FORCED AERATION SYSTEM DESIGN This paper describes LVMC’s efforts to bioleach the remaining inventory by forced aeration. Two basic aeration systems were installed and tested including vertical wells and horizontal piping. Vertical System The vertical system was installed using the mine’s blast hole drilling rig. Wells were constructed using 4” high-density polyethylene (HDPE) connected to 4” polyvinyl chloride (PVC) screens similar to conventional bioventing wells. Ore samples were collected at each well location to characterize the spatial distribution of the remaining inventory along with fines (minus 200 sieve), pH (acid consumption), and iron. A block model of each analyte was developed and mapped in 3D."

Mining engineers spend countless hours and resources when designing a new underground coal mine. Their primary objective is to design the safest and most efficient operating mine with regards to coal production. A key variable often overlooked in this design stage is the slope conveyor. Typically, a slope conveyor is expected to operate with a 98-percent or higher availability. However, too often little effort is put forth by the mining engineer to optimize its design. Coal companies will rely on engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) companies for the preliminary design, because the slope conveyor will be considered part of the surface material handling processes. This preliminary design will be used when soliciting quotations for the slope conveyor. Unfortunately, EPCMs may not have enough expertise with conveyors to optimize the design. This expertise is available with an original equipment manufacture (OEM) of conveyors, which ultimately may be responsible for supplying the slope conveyor. Each OEM will provide a bid package that represents what it considers to be the optimal design.

Fuzzy logic is a useful tool for Sustainable Development (SD) decision making because it can express uncertainty, both in the informational and in the decision-making environment. The general linguistic definition, acceptability for environment (air, water, nature, risk, etc.), as well other aspects of sustainable development (health, management issues, etc) is proved to be useful in approximate reasoning and decision-making. According to this definition, the various fuzzy functions of environmental acceptability can be constructed. This construction is based on the concept of special kinds of fuzzy functions generally defined as Linguistic Variables (LV), which are suitable for mapping to fuzzy sets. Various SD indicators could be used as domains of such functions, expressed either in their physical values (e.g. production, emissions, risk of accidents) or in Measure of Preferences (MP). The most important MP are mentioned below: Stated Preferences Techniques (SPT) of economic evaluation of environment, economic instruments of environmental protection mostly based on Revealed Preference Techniques (RPT), preferences scales (ordinal, cardinal) according to various methods of their construction, etc. Also, the possibility theory (analogous to probability) could be exploited in such construction. It could be used together with environmental engineering modelling formulas for the purpose of determining fuzzy functions. The appropriate forms of linguistic variables, considering limit cases for this purpose, are also discussed.

Introduction Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is an essential nutrient required for growth. Since all living things need potash, the major demand for potash - about 95% of the total - is as a fertilizer. Agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times. This increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows then that potash will always be in demand. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain phosphorous (P) and nitrogen (N) are complementary and not competing products. Fireplace ashes (pot-ashes) have a relatively high potassium content. Their value as a fertilizer had been recognized for centuries. But today's potash industry did not begin until deposits of potassium-rich ore were discovered and exploited in Europe during the 19th century. Canadian potash development Potash in Saskatchewan was first recognized in 1943. It was discovered as a byproduct of an oil exploration program. But it was several years later before the existence of a major commercial deposit was acknowledged, and not until 1951 that the first attempt at development occurred. That attempt was unsuccessful. The shaft flooded and was abandoned. It did, however, demonstrate the need for new technology to penetrate the waterlogged Blairmore layer. This was eventually developed and the first mines were brought into production in the early 1960s. Once the technology was available, and the extent and quality of the potash beds became known, a number of companies proceeded to develop mines. By 1970, seven mines were in operation and three more were nearing completion. Combined, total capacity then was 7.6 Mt/a (8.4 mil¬lion stpy) K20. At that time, world potash consumption was about 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy). This increase in supply from Canada produced a large potential surplus that shattered the prevailing balance between supply and demand. Although world demand increased steadily throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, it was several years before world supply and demand were again in balance. Saskatchewan capacity has been expanded a number of times. It now stands at 10.7 Mt/a (11.7 million stpy) K20. Actual production has not approached this figure, however. Two new mines in New Brunswick have recently been built with a combined annual capacity of 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) K20. Total Canadian capacity of about 12 Mt/a (13 million stpy) now amounts to 30% of world capacity. Central offshore marketing organization Canadian Potash Exports Ltd. (Canpotex) was created in 1970 as the offshore marketing organization for Canadian producers. Canpotex is owned by Saskatchewan producers and is their exclusive marketing organization for offshore business. Each company handles its own sales in Canada and the US, but all sales to other markets are handled through and by Canpotex. The Saskatchewan industry has an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere in the world. Large efficient mines have production costs that compare favorably with other producing countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets. It therefore needs the ef¬ficiencies that stem from one organization that coordinates all offshore shipments and minimizes distribution costs. Agriculture guides potash market In the period following World War II, potash was a classic growth industry. World demand increased each year from 1945 to early 1970s. Since then, demand has been more erratic. Some years show substantial increases, but are followed by significant declines. For about the last decade, the pattern has been unclear and future demand has become correspondingly difficult to predict. North America and Europe together account for about 40% of the world potash consumption. In both areas, farming is characterized by surplus production, declining crop prices, and expensive government support programs. Under those circumstances, farmers respond by minimizing input costs. Fertilizer is one of the items they reduce. Potash is retained in the soil. It is possible to reduce potash application with no immediate deterioration in crop yield. The Crosstown 7 Collector System, Contract C28G11, is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's Waste Pollution Abatement Program. The contract involves the construction of 1.6 km (1 mile) of 3 m (10 ft.) diameter tunnel in soft ground. The tunnel is 10 m (35 Ft.) below surface and passes through a variety of soils. The eastern leg of the tunnel along Bruce Street is mainly in till material, a stiff, relatively dry clay. The northern leg along 16th Street starts in till, and continues in estuarine deposits - moist sticky clay, with intrusions of alluvial sand and gravel. The contract specifications required that the tunnel be constructed either under compressed air or with an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The S. A. Healy Co., the general contractor, chose the latter option. Additionally, a single pass, pre-cast concrete segmental liner was selected as the lining system. The mining machine was manufactured by Lovat Tunnel of Canada and the segments were made by the Sehulster Company of Milwaukee. The use of this combination of machine and lining is relatively new to the United States and this tunnel is the most extensive built to date with a gasketed, segmental single pass lining for transportation of fluids. This paper details the various aspects of the construction of the tunnel and associated shafts.

Paper presents project results investigating current techniques for dragline wire rope removal and the development of less hazardous means of performing the task. The cannon is the most prevalent method used in American surface mines. A cannon test program was conducted that used 40-and 50-grain primer cord to establish force produced using a 56-pound projectile. Socketlwedges were separated to establish separation force data. Two alternative removal methods, pendulum ram and portable hydraulic pusher, were developed and tested. Both provide sufficient force to effect separations under normal conditions on draglines with up to 78- cubic yard buckets.

When systematically compared to other engineering fields, mining engineering is distinctive in 1) having a total systems concern. 2) dealing with encumbered space and 3) requiring full spectrum practice. The total systems concern results from having to design and then co-ordinate in space and time several major systems: excavating and bulk handling, ground control, life support and normal support. This requirement favors a generalist rather than a specialist approach. In coping with encumbered space especially in underground coal mining, the uncertainties of geologic conditions are compounded by tightness, roughness, remoteness and hazards. Into this difficult setting the total systems * complex is "stuffed," adding congestion and interference. Because of significant ground deterioration a flexible "rapid in-out" approach is usually vital to mining. Full spectrum practice arises from the need to manage, as well as to plan and design, a labor intensive operation. Since market conditions can also fluctuate most aspects of administration are needed in many respects, mining engineering functions relative to civil engineering in a way similar to industrial to mechanical engineering, with encumbered space being crucial. On this basis stress is placed on: 1) personal relations, 2) field work and 3) entrepreneurship, viewing time as money. Specific recommendations for improving engineering, safety and management and leadership are made. Since most new deposits are marginal, by applying these recommendations with high technology they could possibly now be mined on a widespread basis.

In the past, considerable work has been done on the applica­bility of bromine chemistry in the extractive metallurgy of gold. While the research in this area spanned from the understanding of fundamental dissolution chemistry to the demonstration on a pilot plant scale, no work was done on the fate of discarded leach residues with respect to the stability of accompanied heavy met­als. Because the leach residues were the discharge products of halide/halogen systems, the general perception was that the con­tained heavy metals would be more susceptible to dissolution than in typical sulfate systems, thus causing increased environ­mental problems. A long-term study was performed to obtain the information on the stability of heavy metals contained in the leaching residues after bromination. The study involved the leach residues of three different ores, as well the precipitates prepared from the synthetic solutions (not presented here). The conclusion of this study is that the stability of solid residues produced by bromination leaching was same as the sta­bility of leach residues produced by leaching in the sulfate sys­tems. Also, contrary to the past expectations, the presence of bromide ions in the test solutions (up to 1 g/L NaBr) did not enhance the solubility of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, As) beyond the solubilities found in the sulfate systems.

Over the many years since the development of the steam powered shovel, various powering and control techniques have been employed for the various shovel functions. While volumes have been published on this subject, this paper will be limited to a very brief discus-sion of one of the latest of these and its application to a unique machine. The evaluation of the subject machine is far beyond the scope of this discussion, which will be limited to the techniques and equipment employed, and the considerations involved in their choice. The basic requirements for any power and associated control system for any power shovel function have remained relatively un-changed over the years. To the extent possible, such an equipment grouping must be: Easy to install during fabrication Easy to maintain and repair by available personnel Life cycle cost competitive Adequately reliable Adequately responsive And as may be expected these factors are arranged in various orders of priority by different manufacturers and users. All the various time honored approaches have to some extent fulfilled these require-ments but were discarded or fell into disuse when more effective approaches were developed. The latest in this long line of develop-ments and perhaps the most promising is that of electro-hydraulic controls and hydraulic drive.

The Alumet Company of Golden, Colorado, is currently engaged in the development of their Diamond Creek and Lanes Creek phosphate ore bodies located near Soda Springs, Idaho. The Alumet Company is a partnership of National Steel, Southwire Co., and Earth Science Inc. Davy Powergas, Inc., of Florida was contracted by Alumet to perform an evaluation study of these properties and, in general, determine the tonnage of altered and unaltered phosphate reserves which would be amenable to beneficiation and production of merchantable phosphate rock (defined as material with a P2O5 content of 3 1.0% and greater). The Colorado School of Mines Research Institute was retained by Davy Powergas to develop a beneficiation method for the studies of the altered and unaltered ores. Ore reserves were classified by Davy in a comprehensive range of categories such that any partial grouping could be made as dictated by future mine planning, mine or mill design, or prevalent economic conditions. Categories included ore horizon, stripping ratio, degree of certainty of their existence, and physical and chemical characteristics. The last category was of interest for beneficiation considerations in that it dealt with the degree of alteration of the phosphate ore.

Alkaline pressure oxidation (POX) is an oxidative pre-treatment option that is commercially used for high-carbonate sulfidic gold ores. The high carbonate grades within the feed ore shifts the ideal operating pH to a basic regime. Compared with acidic POX, alkaline POX typically requires additional steam input due to a lower sulfur oxidation load and a high rate of in-situ carbon dioxide generation that needs to be vented along with steam. The cost of this steam addition is the largest differentiator between acid POX operation and alkaline POX from a cost comparison. However, alkaline POX can offset these costs through reduced acid usage for pre-acidulation and decreased alkali reagent consumption for subsequent neutralization. This paper reviews the specific operating cost impacts of acid/base consumption between alkaline and acidic POX with ores which require pre-acidulation, the overall economics of alkaline POX, and the regimes in which alkaline POX is economically favorable. The findings aim to guide industry professionals in making informed decisions for alkaline POX adoption by providing a summary view of its operational benefits and costs, contributing to the development of cost-effective and sustainable gold ore processing techniques.

In this paper, electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed along with the role of galvanic interactions in bioleaching. Polarization studies using a manganese nodule slurry electrode system indicated that the maximum dissolution of iron and manganese due to electrochemical reduction occurred at negative DC potentials of -600 and -1,400 mV(SCE). Electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans at the above negative applied DC potentials resulted insignificant dissolution of copper, nickel and cobalt in IMH2S04 and in sulfuric acid solution at pH 0.5 and 2.0. Mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed. Galvanic leaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of externally added pyrite and pyrolusite for enhancement of dissolution was also studied. Various electrochemical and biochemical parameters were optimized, and the electroleaching and galvanic processes thus developed are shown to yield almost complete dissolution of all metal values. This electrobioleaching process developed in the laboratory may be cost effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Australia is the largest exporter of coking and thermal coal to the international market. This market has required that the coal being presented to the customer has a particular level and consistency of quality. In this context, the Australian industry has developed coal preparation practices that allow this criteria to be met while maximising the recovery of coal from the resource. This has required on- going developments in both coarse and fine coal cleaning technology over the past 30 years. Coal flotation has undergone a number of developments with regard to maximising recovery from the overall plant circuit. This includes innovative flotation circuits (split feed), methods of enhancing the use of reagents and control of pH. During the 1990s, there have been major changes in flotation as practised in Australian coal preparation plants. Columns have become the preferred technology for both greenfield developments and plant upgrades. This paper will outline the above developments with a number of plant examples and the reasoning that has driven the change. The ongoing research that is being carried out on new cells to optimise the overall fine coal circuit will also be discussed.

The Ohio valley division of consolidation coal company has incorporated two new aspects within its coal mining concern. A new communication system, thru the cooperation of the c. & p. Telephone company, has been established in each of our mines with its central control in the general office building. In conjunction with this system, a Texas instruments 960 a computer has been incorporated into the system. The purpose for our computer is to provide modernization and improvement to our safety, production and maintenance programs. Thru proper use, the computer will help eliminate inaccuracies and inefficiences that have previously caused inaccurate analysis of problems. Due to federal requirements for more reliable communications in underground mines, Ohio valley division is making a concentrated effort to improve its communication systems. Systems such as the magneto phone and trolley phone have been looked at more critically. It was found that these systems are being used well beyond their limits. With these facts in mind, division personnel started looking for a system that would have these built in advantages: ease of maintenance and installation, increased reliability, low cost, and an inherent ability as a multiple use system.

GENERAL BACKGROUND The first mention of the presence of bauxite in the mesozoic series of north-west Sardinia (fig. 1) is owed to Oosterbaan, a Dutch geologist, who carried out a geological survey of the area in the ninetten thirties. A more detailed study of the mesozoic series was attempted in the fifties by Pecorini and other, who concentrated particularly upon the stratigraphy of the bauxitic horizons, through examination of the various outcrops. In the sixties a pining company, Monte Amiata S.p.A., turned its attention to a section of the deposit outcropping near Olmedo and, considering it to be of some promise, carried out prospecting works consisting essentially of various trenches, some bore holes, a few adit and a. layout plan for the preparation and execution of trial exploitation. The results, although positive, did not convince the company's shareholders to continue the exploration. This report, which is intended as a new contribution to knowledge of the Sardinian bauxite deposit, takes into account the information acquired not only from a drilling prospection begun in 1979 in connection with the SOMIT-PROGEMISA joint venture, but also the results of structural studies and numerous chemical, mineralogical and

Green algae taken from an acidic mine drainage and blue-green algae taken from an alkaline hot spring stream were collected and tested for their ability to recover or remove dilute metal ions. Experimental results demonstrated that unwashed blue-green algae and washed green algae effectively adsorbed base metals ions and eluted them at pH 1. It was also found that washed and dried algae adsorbed precious metal ions more effectively than unwashed algae. For example, the washed and dried blue-green algae was capable of adsorbing 0.31 kg of gold per kg of algae. The gold from tetrachloroaurate solution which was adsorbed on washed blue- green algae was found to change to a metallic state following initial metal binding. In the case of a dilute gold complex solution leached with thiourea, only a small amount of gold could be captured by algae. Further experiments were conducted on components of the algae, such as alginic acid, agar, cellulose and chitin and mixtures of these components, in order to determine their contribution to metal adsorption characteristics. However, a mixture of these two components demonstrated both good adsorption and desorption characteristics indicating an interaction between the individual components.
