Feeding laterite nickel slurry into high pressure acid­leach (HPAL) autoclaves in an aggressive environment with slurries heated up to 200°C requires a special pump design. For decades the GEHO piston diaphragm pumps have been used for autoclave feeding at gold ore pressure oxidation plants with slurries up to l 77°C. Lessons learned from these installations have been instrumental in designing second generation feed pumps for processing laterite nickel with operating temperatures of 200°C and a flow rate of 400 m3/h. The Australian nickel industry is using momentarily 8 GEHO positive displacement piston diaphragm pumps. For this application six GEHO ZPM 900 "dropleg" pumps have been supplied to the Murrin Murrin project and two to Bulong.

A significant portion of the, coal mined by U. S. Steel is beneficiated to upgrade the quality of the resultant coke to meet blast-furnace requirements. Primarily because of degradation from modern mechanized mining methods, a considerable quantity of the coal to be beneficiated is in the 1/4-inch by 100-mesh size range. In the cleaning plants, this coal is usually cleaned on concentrating tables and then mechanically dewatered in solid-bowl centrifuges to 9 to 14 percent water. At some plants, to further decrease the amount of water shipped with coal, and to improve the coking characteristics of the coal at its destination, mechanical dewatering is followed by thermal drying. At U. S. Steel's-Alpheus preparation plant at Gary, West Virginia, approximately 50 percent of the total coal produced is in this fine size range, and two fluidized-bed dryers are used for the thermal drying step. The two fluidized-bed dryers are 14 feet in diameter and were designed by the Dorr-Oliver Company. Although the original design called for a rate of drying equivalent to 37 tons, of moisture per hour, presently they are removing twice that amount. This paper describes, the major problems encountered' in operating these dryers at the present, high capacities and how they were overcome.

The geology of the Gulf Coast Salt domes has been extensively studied by Kupfer (1,2,3,4,5), Atwater (6,7), Balk (81, Hawkins (9), and Wharton (10). dominant geological feature of Southern Louisiana is the Gulf Coast Geosyncline. The axis of this geosyncline corresponds with the present day coastline of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. This geosyncline has been continually subsiding since Cretaceous times and receiving large deltaic accumulations of sediments from Central North America. These accumulations progressively thicken toward the South. In the vicinity of the Coast, these sediments are reported to be about 40,000 feet thick. Another dominant feature of the region is the large number of salt domes scattered along the Gulf Coast (fig. 1). Typically, these domes are roughly cylindrical in shape, 1 to 5 miles in diameter, and extend to more than 20,000 feet in depth. It is hypothesized that these domes are derived from the thick Louann salt formation lying below the deltaic sediments. Due to its low specific gravity and buoyancy, the salt layer protruded upwards plastically and pierced the overlying strata. As a result of this upward flow, the adjacent strata are locally lifted upwards, creating excellent traps for petroleum accumulation.

In deep strip mines the job of moving overburden may be so much bigger, and more costly than the removal of coal or ore that the operation is often called dirt mining. Constant improvement in stripping machines and techniques of using them is needed to offset rising costs and to increase production in mines that are now operating, and to make it economically possible to work deeper or thinner deposits.

Landusky Mining, Inc. and Zortman Mining, Inc. are two registered Montana Corporations wholly owned by Pegasus Gold, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. The Zortman and Landusky Mines are located in the Little Rockies District of central Montana. The Zortman-Landusky mines produced 2,100 kg gold in 1982. A total of 3,250,000 t of ore per year are mined during the period March 1, to September 15, at an average grade of 1.04 gm/t (0.03 oz/t) gold and 13.4 gm/t (0.385 oz/t) silver at a cutoff grade of 0.35 grams of gold/ton (0.01 oz of Au/t) of ore. The stripping ratio during 1983 is anticipated to be 0.75/1 waste to ore. Combined average plant capacity of the two Merrill-Crowe plants is 9,840 lpm (2,600 gpm). The combined heap spray capacity of the two plants approaches 18,900 lpm (5,000 gpm). The mine employs approximately 200 people, about half of these work for the mining companies and the other half for the mining contractor, N. A. Degerstrom of Spokane, Washington. Net profit in 1982 for Zortman and Landusky Mining, Inc. approximated $4,900,000 at an average gold price of $11.40/gm.

The Endeavour Colliery is operated by Powercoal Pty Ltd. It is located in the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. The mine has been in operation for about 30 years, producing around 600,000 tons of export coal annually from two production sections. On June 28. 1995, an explosion occurred underground in the 300 Panel at approximately 9:50 a.m.. There were thirty miners underground at the time of the explosion, all of whom were safely evacuated. From June 29 through July 10, personnel did not enter the mine. However, gas samples of the mine atmosphere were obtained from underground monitoring stations and analyzed. Samples were also obtained from boreholes that were drilled from an adjacent mine. On July 10, the atmosphere at the underground monitoring locations and at the boreholes appeared stable with minimal risk of combustion occurring underground. Plans were developed to begin the recovery of the underground workings. The recovery of the underground workings was completed on July 13. The underground investigation of the explosion began on July 14. The investigation was conducted by the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources. Technical assistance was pro- vided by the United States Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

As a supplement to an analysis involving methodologies for the estimation of airflow resistance in shafts used for both ventilation and hoisting, a detailed shaft characterization survey was distributed worldwide. The survey provided detailed information which enabled verification of recommended velocities and established limitations on fill factors and relative velocities. This paper evaluates the information obtained for 37 shafts and presents a statistical evaluation of the results. Apart from airflow rates, conveyance rates, and physical characteristics, qualitative information regarding means of conveyance stability and velocity control techniques at unloading and loading points are also presented. Calculations of fill coefficient, free area velocity, and most importantly, relative velocity between the airflow and hoist, are conducted. These results are presented by frequency diagrams which illustrate the trends, as well as provide limitations for these parameters. The data illustrates that, commonly, the fill coefficient for two or more conveyances, does not exceed 30 %. A limit of 50% is suggested for a single conveyance shaft. A recommended free area velocity of 10 m/s (1,970 ft/min) for combined ventilation and hoisting shafts, is sup- ported by these results. Relative velocities of 30 m/s (5,905 ft/min) are most frequent and 50 m/s (9,840 ft/min) being a practical maximum.

The Baltimore Red Line Project is a proposed 22.7-km (14.1-mile) long east-west light rail transit (LRT) line envisioned to connect the areas of Woodlawn, Edmondson Village, West Baltimore, downtown Baltimore, Inner Harbor East, Fells Point, Canton and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Campus. The Red Line LRT System has two tunnel segments - the Cooks Lane Tunnel (CLT) and the Downtown Tunnel (DTT). The CLT segment is roughly 1,920-m (6,300-ft) long. It commences at the west portal located at the highway ramp for I 70 (to be removed) and terminates at the east portal that is at the intersection of Edmondson Avenue (U.S. Route 40) and Glen Allen Drive. This segment of the project consists of the following construction components: approximately 1,458 m (4,786 ft) of tunnels, 143 m (469 ft) of cut-and-cover tunnel, and 318 m (1,045 ft) of retained cut (U) section. The approximate horizontal alignment for the Red Line LRT Project is shown in Fig. 1.

Western Australia is the largest state in Australia with an area one and three quarter times the size of Texas. Most of the State is desert or semi-desert, and only the southwest corner is heavily populated. The State has a population of one and a half million people, and one million of these live in and around the city of Perth. Perth is located on the narrow Swan Coastal Plain and is flanked by the Indian Ocean and the Darling Plateau. The Darling Plateau is an ancient peneplain rising some 300 metres above sea level, and forms an important resource base for the population. The Darling Plateau is old, having been formed some 200 million years ago, and its soils are deeply weathered. The parent materials were granite and gneis which have broken down to form lateritic gravels, overlying dense kaolinitic clays. Some 30 million years ago, in the Tertiary period, a sub - tropical climate prevailed. Appropriate conditions of moisture, temperature and drainage led to extensive laterisation. Some of the laterite contains bauxite of mineable quality. Some 1.9 million hectares of the south-west of Western Australia is covered by eucalypt forests. Introduction Soda ash is known chemically as sodium carbonate, an important inorganic chemical. It has been produced for several centuries by processing certain vegetation and minerals. The US soda ash industry has evolved from several small sodium carbonate mining operations in the West. Now, a nucleus of six companies produce about one-fourth of the world's annual soda ash output US producers currently dominate the world market. But certain international events are occurring that will reshape the domestic soda ash industry in the next decade. Historical perspective Soda ash is used mainly in the manufacture of glass, soap, dyes and pigments, textiles, and other chemical preparations. All of these are the first basic consumer products produced by developing societies. About 3500 BC, the Egyptians became the first society to use crude soda ash. The soda ash was used to make glass containers. It was most likely obtained from dried mineral incrustations around alkaline lakes. Soda deposits were virtually nonexistent in western Europe. So people resorted to burning seaweed to obtain the ashes. The ashes were then leached with hot water and the solute was recovered after evaporating the solution to dryness. The solute, a crude "soda ash" was impure. But, it could be used to make glass and soap. These two products and industries were important to the population and economic growth of the region. About 11.5 t (13 st) of seaweed ash was required to produce about 0.9 t (1 st) of soda ash. Along the coasts of England, France, and Spain, seaweeds with varying alkali contents became important items of commerce and sources of soda ash before the 18th century. The LeBlanc process used salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. It became the major method of production from about 1823 to 1885. In the early 1860s, Ernest and Alfred Solvay, two Belgian brothers, successfully commercialized an ammonia-soda process to synthesize soda ash. It used salt, coke, limestone, and ammonia. The Solvay process produced a better quality product than the LeBlanc method. In 1879, Oswald J. Heinrich presented to the Baltimore meeting of AIME, a paper entitled "The manufacture of soda by the ammonia process." The paper compared the two processes and foretold the demise of the LeBlanc technique. World production of soda ash in 1880 was 680 kt (750,000 st). Of that, 544 kt (600,000 st) was produced by the LeBlanc process. Of the 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st) of soda ash produced worldwide in 1913, only about 50 kt (55,000 st) was by the LeBlanc method. The LeBlanc process was never used successfully in the US, except for a brief period from July 1884 to January 1885 in Laramie, WY. Previously, soda ash had been produced by burning certain plants, as exemplified by the early Jamestown colonists, or by recovering small quantities of natural sodium carbonate found in alkaline lakes, such as those found near Fallon, NV, and Independence Rock, WY. Before the 1884 startup of the first synthetic soda ash plant in the US at Syracuse, NY, most of the domestic soda ash demand in the East was met by imports, primarily from England. Large-scale commercial production of natural soda ash began in California in 1887 from surface crystalline material at Owens Lake. Production from sodium carbonate-bearing brines at Searles Lake began in 1927 (Fig. 1). In 1938, during exploration for oil and gas in southwestern Wyoming, a massive buried trona deposit, presumably the world's largest, was accidentally discovered. Recent mineral resource evaluation by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines indicates that the Wyoming trona deposit contains 86 Gt (93 billion st) of identified trona resource in beds 1.2 m (4 ft) thick or greater. Additionally, there is about 61 Gt (67 billion st) of reserve base trona. Of this 36 Gt (40 billion st) is in halite-free trona beds and 24 Gt (27 billion st) is in mixed trona and halite beds. In 1953, the Food Machinery and Chemical Corp. (later shortened to FMC Corp.) became the first company to mine trona in Wyoming. Soda ash demand increased.

The effects of certain variables on the extraction of gold by thioureation have been investigated on a quartzose gold-bearing ore using a statistical multifactorial strategy. The factors taken into consideration were milling time (which corresponds to a given grain size), oxidant concentration, thiourea concentration and liquid/solid ratio. The influence of these four variables was ascertained first by a full factorial design at two levels for each variable (16 runs). This permitted the estimation of first-order effects of the factors affecting the process. Then 9 runs were added whose levels were both in the centre of and outside the axes of the previous plan thus originating a central composite design. This permitted estimation both of second-order effects of the factors involved and of parameters of a second-order polynomial model. The results show that extraction of gold depends only on milling time and oxidant concentration, at least in the experimental range considered. The equation fitting experimental data, as calculated by the least squares method, allows a response surface to be drawn. Due to the low gold grade of the ore (6 ppm) statistical analysis could lead to contradictory results, hence strict observance of Gy's rules for sampling and very accurate and precise chemical analyses were required.

 The paper combines theoretical and experimental analysis to improve the accuracy of predicting paste yield stress by slump flow. It derives an analytical model of slump flow for yield stress, providing a theoretical basis for quantifying the rheological properties of paste with slump flow. The study uses three different tailings-prepared pastes and constructs an empirical yield stress model, showing high accuracy and good generality.

The Flat Gap Mine is on Copper Ridge in the Appalachian Valley of East Tennessee, Large zinc orebodies occupy zones of solution and collapse breccias in lower Ordovician Kingsport limestone and dolomite, The principal ore mineral is sphalerite and the principal gangue is dolomite, The orebearing horizons are considerably more than 95% covered by thick residual clay, and geochemical prospecting under these conditions is an effective exploration technique which played an important role in the discovery and exploration of the Flat Gap Mine, The residual nature of the over-burden at Flat Gap is emphasized, Background heavy metals (mainly zinc) range from 50 to 200 ppm, and the anomalies range to 3000 ppm and more, About 80% to 9W0 of the soil zinc is in relatively insoluble form in solid solution with the hydrous iron oxides and in the crystal lattice of the clay minerals. Quite discrete zones in the soil with sharply contrasting metal value boundaries mark vestiges of bedrock mineralization, and such anomalous soil areas are often contiguous with partially weathered ore. It has not been possible on the basis of chemical criteria to distinguish between an anomaly formed from non-commercial mineralization and one formed from ore.

The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. The long hole open stoping (LHOS) method is widely used in underground mining. While methods to predict stable stope geometries are well established, the ability to maintain a stable back often assumes effective ground support across the full stope span. The efficacy of the support strategy is dependent on rock jointing, quality, density, top cut width and height, and the type, amount, and orientations of bolts installed. However, it is becoming increasingly common for operators to assume narrow top cuts in service of wider stope spans with minimal bolting coverage. Failure to account for the required top cut drift size and support requirements can ultimately lead to raveling type instabilities along stope shoulders that result in back collapse. A new method has been developed to evaluate the minimum top cut dimension necessary to accommodate wider stope spans with various rock bolting configurations. Due to the economic impacts of top cut development and support, this is a critical consideration in the accurate costing and scheduling of a LHOS operation. Tables 1 lists the acronyms are used throughout this paper.

The three major catalyst markets that utilize industrial minerals as raw materials are petroleum refining, chemical processing, and emission control. Because of economic, competitive, and regulatory pressures, catalyst producers are pushed to develop products with improved performance to meet changing environmental standards. Also, refiners are demanding new families of cracking catalysts that will crack residual fuels. In 1987, worldwide cracking catalyst sales amounted to $457 million (Occelli, 1988a). Recently enacted federal and state laws to improve air quality have prompted strong growth for environmental catalysts, which in 1989 accounted for more than a third of the $1.9 billion catalyst market in the United States (Farrauto, Heck, and Speronello, 1992). A catalyst is a material that promotes or enhances a chemical reaction but does not itself enter into the reaction. One of the more important mineral groups used as catalysts is clays. The first recorded use of clay as a catalyst was its use in the dehydration of alcohol (Bondt et al., 1797). Clay minerals that are used as catalysts are kaolinite, halloysite, smectite, palygorskite, and sepiolite. Minerals used as catalysts, catalyst supports, or as a raw material to make zeolites are kaolinite, halloysite, sodium montmorillonite, calcium montmorillonite, hectorite, palygorskite, sepiolite, talc, calcined kaolinite, gibbsite, chlorite, and titanium dioxide.

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production, but the thermal state of pellets in the drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of the drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results indicate there is a coupling effect in the drying section of a traveling grate. Gas with higher temperature in down-draught drying (DDD) transfers heat to the up-draught drying (UDD) through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changes before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD are displayed in UDD in advance. To verify the model, a contrast experiment was conducted.

Energy costs have had a serious impact on all basic industries today. This is due to the significant amount of energy that is used to convert natural resources into usable products. Other factors such as transportation with its major energy requirement and materials employed in processing that have already required significant energy input for their manufacture accordingly influence delivered cost to the user. The farmer is a good example of this. While his large capital investment for land, machines, and buildings is highly impacted by today's interest rates, his chemical fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides as well as those same machines and transportation costs for his products have also been seriously affected by energy costs. With the many unit operations involved in mining and mineral processing, several of which require significant inputs of energy, one can only conclude that this industry has experienced a great increase in percentage of total cost for energy alone. Fuerstenau (1975) indicated that the minerals industry used about 12.5% of the total energy produced in the US. McNulty (1983) listed the total energy requirements for the production of 0.9 t (1 st) of various metals including the energy consumed in the manufacture of supplies employed, such as tires, explosives, chemicals, grinding media, etc. (Table 1).

The Santa Fe Railway serves the dominant U. S. potash producing region which is centered at Carlsbad, NM. This rail system extends over 12,000 miles stretching from Chicago to the Texas Gulf Coast to the state of California. (see Figure 1) Since Carlsbad mining operations began in the 1930?s, Santa Fe has been transporting potash to many of the important grain producing areas of the country and to the major ports in Texas and California. Santa Fe has maintained a close relationship with the potash companies and has adopted a marketing philosophy of attempting to maximize opportunities for the Carlsbad producers where it is mutually beneficial. Potash has been an important commodity for the Santa Fe. It accounted for 8% of our revenue in 1965 and 3% in 1984. In the 1950?s, Carlsbad became the second largest revenue producing point on the Santa Fe. But this prominent position has diminished as ore reserves became depleted, imports flooded the U. S. market, and truck transportation developed.
