The mining industry collects a significant amount of operational data. However, gleaning useful information from the terabytes of data is difficult, and not just because of the sheer volume of the data. Therefore, an automated tool was developed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to go through data and apply sophisticated statistical and neural network techniques in order to identify the data streams that are important to a process. This paper presents results from the tool as applied to SAG mill data from a gold mine. The results were compared to results achieved earlier with available commercial modeling tools. The comparison indicates that there was little or no loss in performance by automating the very complicated process of neural network modeling. Therefore, the intent of the exercise, to examine if complicated modeling tasks can be automated, was realized. Mining Engineering, 2011, Vol. 63, No. 12, pp. 52-54. Agglomeration for the heap leaching of gold and silver ores is the process of attaching fine ore particles-less than 150 µm (100 mesh)-to coarser particles. The fines are thus immobilized and uniformly distributed throughout the heap. This is needed to make heaps more porous and uniformly permeable to the flow of a leaching solution. This article describes liquids and binders used to form agglomerates. Agglomeration techniques and equipment are also described. These include drum and disk agglomerators, stockpile and belt agglomeration, and the use of vibrating deck and reverse-running conveyors. The need for agglomeration The main reason for agglomerating heap leachable ores is to prevent percolation problems in a heap. This is different than pelletizing iron ore. In the latter case, the purpose is to bond very finely ground material into coarser, strong particles. These particles can then withstand the rigors of transportation and the loading forces in a blast furnace. Most percolation problems in heaps are caused by the segregation of coarse and fine particles during heap construction. This segregation creates areas with significantly lower permeability because fines plug the channels between coarse particles. Consequently, the leach solutions are subject to channeling, following the path of least resistance. They percolate downward through the coarse ore areas and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines. This results in lower extraction, longer leach time, and higher reagent consumption. Permeability problems in heap leaching are compounded because of the vertical migration of fine particles after the heap has been built. These fines eventually accumulate in pockets or layers and impede uniform solution flow. The fines move because they are not attached to a coarser particle. Moreover, the sluicing action of leach solution flowing over the surface of particles may break the bond between fine and coarse particles. Some fines are also created by the decomposition of ores after being wetted. Percolation problems are minimized if the fines can be attached to the coarser particles. Fines are thus uniformly distributed and rendered immobile within the heap. Heinen (1979) conducted comparative tests of nonagglomerated and agglomerated gold and silver ores. He showed that percolation rates through agglomerated material usually are improved by 10 to 100 times. This reduces leach time for economic recovery to less than one-third of that for nonagglomerated material, and total recovery may be increased. Cyanide consumption is also reduced in most cases because of the shortened leach time. Even run of mine (ROM) ore should be agglomerated. This can be achieved with moderate success by passing each truckload of ore under a water spray to bring total moisture of the ore up to about 8% to 10%. The ROM ore will mix when the ore is dumped, when it cascades down the slope of a heap, or when it is pushed up with a dozer. Overall, agglomeration allows low-cost heap leaching technology be applied to gold and silver ores and tailings that could not be economically processed by conventional methods, according to Phariss (1982). How agglomeration works Agglomeration means that the clays and fine particles contained in the ore adhere to the coarser particles. This creates a coating of fines around the coarse particles. When the ore has few fines and the percolation problems are not severe, the addition of a liquid may be all that is necessary to make the few fines adhere to coarser particles. However, when the quantity of fines is substantial, e.g., +10% -75 µm (-200 mesh), a binding agent may be needed. The European Economic Community (The Common Market) is now shifting from I a coal oriented to an oil oriented economy. The proportion of energy supplied by oil has increased from only 13% in 1950 to 38% in 1962, and will approach 50% by 1970. In the past five years Common Market petroleum demand has in- creased 15% per year compared with only 3% per year in the United States. This rapid shift to oil can be explained by looking at oil's competition, First; there is simply not enough other energy - European coal, natural gas and hydro-electric power - to meet the demand, Secondly, oil?s primary competing energy in the Common Market is coal, and Community coal is high-priced - it costs more than two and a half times as much as U. S, coal at the pithead. The third reason for the shift to oil is consumer preference for the ease of handling, convenience and cleanliness of liquid fuels. As these reasons suggest, much of the shift to oil and the resulting growth in demand would have occurred whether or not the Common Market organization had existed. On the other hand, the Common Market has stimulated the use of oil by causing a higher rate of energy consumption, and oil has been the beneficiary of most of this growth.

Large language models (LLMs) have generated a lot of hype since ChatGPT was released in early 2023. In essence, they allow people to interact with computer systems through natural language and have the ability to generate highly complex text, images and videos (Patil and Gudivada, 2024). It is clear that this technology has significant potential, however most mining companies have not yet found practical applications for it within their operations. In this paper, we present a range of such applications along with the tactical considerations associated with developing and implementing them. We have identified use cases across a variety of operational and functional areas within the mining industry and evaluated them based on their potential business value and ease of implementation. Firstly, we provide an overview of how LLMs work and a review of how LLMs are being applied in other industries to provide best practice inspiration for mining. Next, we present a list of possible applications in mining and a critical assessment of each use case. This section also includes a technical deep dive into the different methodologies for developing the technologies as well as an analysis of barriers to adoption within mining organizations. Finally, we share a discussion of the potential path forward for LLMs in mining and the impact they could have on the industry. We analyze the potential differences between early adopters and laggards in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. This research draws on interviews and surveys with artificial intelligence experts as well as mining subject matter experts to connect cutting edge thought leadership with the specific problems faced by our industry.

The Buckskin Mountains Tunnel is a key link in the Bureau of Reclamation's Central Arizona Project. The 22-foot (6.7-m) diameter tunnel is being bored in a north-northwesterly direction through volcanic rock near Lake Havasu in western Arizona. The 6.9-mile (11-km) conveyance tunnel will carry up to 3,000 cfs (85 cu m per sec) of water through the Buckskin Mountains as part of the Granite Reef Aqueduct. The water for the project will be drawn from Lake Havasu behind Parker Dam on the Colorado River and pumped some 800 feet (244 m) above the lake to the inlet portal of the free flow tunnel where it begins its 190-mile (300-km) journey to Phoenix, Arizona, and beyond into Orme Reservoir (figure 1). Precast concrete segments are being used as a single system initial support and final lining in the tunnel being excavated by a tunnel boring machine specially designed and built for the job by The Robbins Company. J. F. Shea Company, Inc., of Walnut, California, is constructing the tunnel for the Bureau of Reclamation.

INTRODUCTION In Canada, radium-226 is removed from uranium mining and milling effluents by the addition of barium chloride to precipitate barium-radium sulphate. Large settling ponds are provided to effect solid-liquid separation. However, the barium-radium sulphate precipitate [(Ba,Ra)S04] is a fine, slow-settling crystalline solid which is not easily removed by simple sedimentation systems. Consequently, settling pond effluents may contain appreciable quantities of particulate or suspended radium-226, depending upon the specific pond system and/or the time of year considered. Also, current technology is expected to be incompatible with ultimate disposal goals since safe recovery of the barium-radium sulphate sludge from the settling ponds may be difficult to achieve (IAEA, 1976). Under the auspices of Environment Canada, a Government-Industry Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical--chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the Sub-Group recommendations, a bench scale feasibility study began in March 1976 at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada. The bench scale work was expanded and accelerated in 1977 with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the (Ba,Ra)S04 precipitate greatly increased settling rates (Wilkinson and Cohen, 1977). Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was initiated in January 1978; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry as indicated in Table 1. The principal goal of the Joint Government-Industry Program is the development of a physical-chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. At the RETC 1979 in Atlanta/Georgia it was reported about the beginnings of the Hydroshield system and the first site experiences. Since that time over 10 miles of tunnels in various diameters have been built with that system, and the discussion of the two most interesting projects will be the main topics of this paper. AURELIA TUNNEL, ROME In Rome, the railway system is going to be completed and modernized. Therefore, it is necessary to tunnel through the Roman hills. Part of the new railway system is the Aurelia Tunnel, located some 100 feet below the famous Via Aurelia Antigua, close to the Vatican. The double track railway tunnel has an internal diameter of 9.44 m and a length of 2.410 m. It runs through completely differing soil conditions. Following the success achieved in this first application, the Nazzano Method was strengthened considering all the possible suggestions arising from the previous experience and then taken up to enlarge the north bore of the ‘Montedomini’ two-bore tunnel (Italy, Bologna-Taranto A14 motorway), in situ and the presence of traffic."

The five tunnel contracts of Milwaukee Northeast Side Relief Sewer System are about 80 percent complete. The tunnels are all excavated for 1.9 meter (6'-0") finish diameter sewers in a variable rock, mixed face, and glacial soil environment. Different contracts were let under two primary types of specifications, performance and prescriptive, which treated aspects of construction, such as primary ground support and groundwater control, differently. Interfacing of design and construction through field personnel allowed the needs of all parties to be met and resulted in savings in time and money to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). Interfacing, cooperation and risk sharing allowed resolution of problems such as line and grade variations and potential differing site conditions. It also allowed the parties to pursue constructive changes to construction activities. Thus on one contract prescribed use of compressed air was eliminated, but migration of fines into the tunnels was stopped with filter fabric. Use of an expensive primary support system was dropped, but concern about deterioration of lagging was alleviated by use of special materials.

"Standardization of the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) method for gold in cyanide solutions was undertaken to provide a more sensitive method to quantify the gold content than the atomic absorption method standardized in 1994 (E1600). The gold concentration range covered is from 0.001 mg/L Au - 0.3 mg/L Au (0.00005 toz/t Au – 0.009 toz/t Au). Interlaboratory testing was carried out with the assistance of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International on two committees to determine the within laboratory and between laboratory reproducibility. Three barren solutions from metallurgical operations were measured in triplicate to satisfy statistical requirements for Committee E1 on Analytical Chemistry of Metals, Ores and Related Materials. A synthetically prepared matrix representing the metallurgical processing solutions was used to prepare Youden pairs to satisfy the requirements of Committee D19 on Water. Results of the standardization program are presented. INTRODUCTION Analysis of process solutions for gold concentration requires accurate and sensitive analytical methods in order to manage process control and metallurgical accounting. Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) has been the work horse of the assay lab for this duty for decades. In 1994 the FAAS standard method was approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) (1). Six process solutions were collected and preserved by measuring the pH and adjusting to greater than pH 10, if necessary. Duplicate solutions were provided to eight laboratories in random order for analysis by FAAS covering the gold concentration range of 0.19 µg/mL (0.006 toz/t.) to 10.7 µg/mL (0.312 toz/t). A high precision method was used, which involved bracketing the sample with the higher and lower standards nearest to its concentration repeating readings three times and averaging the results. The optimum precision for the FAAS gold method was found to be at the 1.00 µg/mL (0.029 toz/t) and lower scope limit 0.3 µg/mL (0.009 toz/t) gold concentration. Since tailings solutions typically have concentrations below the lower scope limit, use of ICPMS was developed at Newmont USA Limited (Newmont) to assay the lower range solutions."

From 1996 to 2001, Wayne County and 13 suburban Detroit communities constructed the Downriver Regional Storage and Transport System (DRSTS) to improve area water quality, protect public health and alleviate basement flooding. The project consisted of a 10-mile long storage and transport tunnel, a pump station at the existing wastewater treatment plant, 9 miles of relief sewers (6 in tunnel and 3 in open cut). The work was separated into 10 contracts. Due to hydraulic design requirements and other constraints, the tunnel profile was located generally 65 feet below ground surface within a soft to medium clay strata which skimmed along the top of a very dense glacial till “hardpan” overlaying bedrock. Boulders within the tunnel bore were recognized as a significant, but indeterminate risk. This paper presents a case history of the owner’s contracting strategy for risk assumption and management of the boulder impacts on the project. Actual conditions encountered during construction and contractual adjustments made to address problems are reviewed, and recommendations for future contracts are included.

The Ship Canal Water Quality Project (SCWQP) includes a 2.7-mile long, 18'-10" internal diameter tunnel which is located inWest Seattle. Tunneling in urban areas and soft ground conditions (Till and Till-like soils in Seattle) is associated with the risk of settlements, especially in presence of groundwater above the alignment. The Designer foresaw the use of soil improvement (jet grouting) outside of the launch shaft to mitigate the risk of flowing ground and to provide a redundant sealing. The Contractor proposed and ultimately successfully executed a different approach by using a “Steel Bell System” or Pressurized Can as described in this paper.

"Within the framework of the European project NeTTUN, the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Building Sciences of ENTPE in Lyon (France) is in charge of a large experimental campaign to investigate the impact of tunneling on neighbouring piled structures. For this study, an original reduced-scale (around 1:10) physical model of EPBS is used. This ""1g"" laboratory model is able to reproduce the main features of the excavation method. For this new experimental program, the miniature EPBS advances inside a large tank filled with a model soil (dry sand), in which instrumented piles were pre-installed. In this paper, the authors describe briefly the original 3D device and present results concerning the impact of tunneling on a single pile located above the tunnel. Different tunneling face pressure are studied in connection with the practice. Machine parameters, pile solicitations and stress-strain behavior of the soil mass monitored under real time conditions are discussed. INTRODUCTION When tunnels are constructed in urban areas, they often come close to pre-existing structures, such as pile foundations. Perturbations of tunnel construction on these neighbouring structures must be considered during design and construction of the tunnel. Ground movements due to tunnelling may induce bending moments, lateral and vertical loads, settlements and lateral deflections in the piles, which may lead to structural damage or failure of the piles or the supported structure. The interaction between piles and a tunnel in construction is a complex three dimensional problem. To date, several experimental approaches have been carried out to analyse the effects of tunnelling on piled foundations (Bezuijen et al., 1994, Loganathan et al., 2000, Jacobsz et al. 2004, Lee and Basset, 2006, Marshall and Mair, 2011, ). These different studies carried out in the laboratory on 1 g or centrifuged models aim at a better understanding of tunnel - piles interaction and a quantification of the influence of each dominating parameter on the structural responses. Parameters like foundation type (single pile, group of piles) and geometry, relative tunnel – pile position, volume loss induced by tunnelling, ground characteristics, pile loading history were considered. However, most of these experiments were carried out under plane strain conditions by modelling the volume loss due to tunnel excavation by decreasing the tunnel diameter or the radial support pressure. As a result, these models do not adequately account for the variations of settlements both in the longitudinal and the transverse direction, which can induce significant flexional and torsional effects on the structures. These effects are particularly critical and detrimental in the case of historical monuments."

The purpose of this paper is to outline the design, specification, and operation of the 8.5-m- diam (28-ft-diam) SAG mill commissioned at Kidston Gold Mines during January 1985. Amenability of Kidston ore to SAG milling, coupled with substantial cost advantages, led to the specification of this mill, equipped with variable speed drive to overcome the large variation in ore hardness. Operation of the mill is effected via a number of automatic control loops. Problems experienced with automatic control plus other electrical and mechanical failures have led to design changes and the formulation of future operating strategies.

The Mule Canyon gold deposit, located 14 miles ESE of Battle Mountain, Nevada, was discovered in 1986 as the result of a GFMC grass-roots exploration program. Drilling to date has identified six discrete orebodies which contain a demonstrated gold reserve of 8.487 million tons at an average grade of 0.136 oz/ton, totaling 1,152,000 ounces. Mineralization is associated with argillic alteration and silicification, localized along NNW trending high-angle faults within Miocene basaltic andesites. Trace element geochemistry at Mule Canyon is typical of upper level hot spring precious metal systems, displaying elevated Ag, As, Sb, Hg, and Se.

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are manufactured barrier layers containing a high-quality sodium bentonite clay attached or adhered to geotextiles or a geomembrane. The GCL's low permeability and high strength make it an ideal replacement for low permeability soil or clay liners for mineral extraction and processing containment applications. This paper will discuss the advantages of utilizing a GCL versus compacted clay in containment applications. Some of the advantages include: the GCL's lower permeability (5 x 10-9 centimeters per second (cm/sec)) and corresponding better composite liner leakage protection, the GCL' s greater resistance to desiccation, differential subsidence and freeze­thaw, and lastly, the ease and speed of installing the GCL. This paper will also detail a number of important case studies related to the mineral extraction and processing industry. These case studies include using GCL in two large reclamation capping projects, as a secondary liner in two gold heap leach pads, as a composite liner in a dam for stormwater runoff control, and lastly, as a primary liner for a tailings runoff diversion channel.

The in situ elastic moduli of rock are measured holographically by a borehole instrument in marble and oil shale. A point force induced displacement field is recorded with double expo- sure holography. Data consists of a fringe pat- tern on the viewed hologram. The elastic moduli are determined by modelling of the fringe pattern. Only Young's inodulus is fairly constrained by the present data reduction. Large-opening underground stone mines pose significant ground control challenges, including the risk of massive pillar collapses. These collapses can result in dangerous air blasts characterized by tremendous force and high velocity. Estimating the velocity of these air blasts proves challenging due to the absence of accurate air velocity instruments near the mine portals. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel approach that leverages closed-circuit television camera footage from the mine. Specifically, it employs the optical flow algorithm implemented in Python to estimate the velocity of the air blasts, providing a valuable tool for assessing and mitigating risks in such mining environments.

The approach to Risk Management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate successful delivery of a project. The $NZ4.4B Auckland City Rail Link project is the largest and most complex transportation project yet undertaken in New Zealand. Risk management prior and during procurement was undertaken in accordance the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP) and through the use of an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline report. This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. This included the use of cloud-based delivery of geotechnical data and 3-D geological models, reducing tendering costs and allowing a focus on risk mitigation measures during the tender rather than data management.

In the late1970s, mineral processing plants producing copper sulfide concentrates and oxide leaching feedstocks went online with operating tonnages that exceeded traditional installations. This created a need for larger capacity belt conveyors and apron feeders. Apron feeders are slow moving, heavily loaded conveyors that feed a deep bed of ore from a bulk holding location (a bunker) as a controlled stream, often into a large capacity crusher. Apron feeders use sprockets and caterpillars, while belt feeders use rubber belts with motorized head pulleys to convey the material. The damaging of belts and clogging of transfer points from tramp iron required larger magnetic separators and the removal of tramp metal cannot prevent these serious problems. Corrective action at this location is important for two reasons: Removing tramp iron early in the ore stream protects downstream equipment from potential costly damage. Installing apron feeder magnets before the primary large capacity crusher means that secondary and tertiary crushing steps (made up of multiple parallel units) operate more efficiently, since tramp metal is removed at the onset.
