The classification of rock and coal will assist in automated coal rib rating and shearer horizon control, and is studied with machine learning techniques in this work. A database of rock and coal images is created by filtering photographs taken by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The classifier was trained with patches extracted from the coal and rock images, and an accuracy score of 0.9 was obtained. The trained classifier was then applied to classify rock from a new coal rib image with three rock layers of different thicknesses, and good agreement was achieved. The results demonstrate that it is promising to use machine learning techniques and rib images for rock and coal classification.

EASTERN COAL CORPORATION is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountain area of extreme Eastern Kentucky, The mountains are of sedimentary origin, and have been deeply eroded by streams as the area has been thrust up during geologic time. There are many seams of coal interspersed between beds of shale and sandstone. While some of the seams are thin, there are a number that can be economically mined. We are mining the Pond Creek, or No. 2 Gas Seam, at a rate in excess of 6,000 tons per day. Our central preparation plant utilizes tromp baths for the plus 3/8" size and Rheolaveur for the minus 3/8" portion. No provision was made to recover the fine coal, which was included with the plant effluent pumped to a 12 acre refuse pond. The pond is impounded behind the coarse refuse dump. This pond rose 15 feet last year. Obviously, no pond could stand many years at this rate. Limited pond space in this rugged area of steep hills and narrow valleys dictated a revised disposal method. Our first thought was that it would be necessary to dry the fine refuse sufficiently to permit inclusion with the coarse refuse, which is hauled uphill by monitor and then trucked to final disposal.

Since start-up in 1985, the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170-g/ton (5 oz/ton) gold flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processes have been investigated to economically produce done' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes laboratory and pilot scale test work used in the process design and engineering. feasibility study of a 73-t/d (80 stpd) pressure oxidation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of verti¬cal autoclave units operating at 170°C (338F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

Comminution is an old art. Unfortunately the analysis of the unit operations has been handicapped by the lack of both theoretical and experimental information. Two types of infor¬mation are needed, one an understanding of what happens when a particle breaks in a brittle manner; and two, an understanding of what happens when the daughter fragments pass through the mill. This paper is concerned with the former, the catastrophic fracture of a brittle solid. Recently, successful theoretical attacks on the frac¬ture of brittle solids have yielded significant-results. New experimental techniques are yielding insight into the physical phenomenon occurring during brittle fracture. Many of the re¬doubtable shiboliths of the last century are either being laid to rest or verified.

The existing methods for recycling lithium-ion batteries present initial hurdles related to the safe handling and preparation of the batteries to avert potential explosions. Submerging batteries in sodium chloride (NaCl) solution has become an acceptable industrial practice. However, the use of NaCl to discharge lithium-ion batteries rusts the batteries’ cases and releases metals which impacts the downstream processes that involve selective recovery of Li. This study aimed to determine the optimal concentrations and pH range of NaCl for the discharge of lithium-ion batteries for the purpose of minimizing the leach of Al, Co, Cu, Fe, Li, and Ni.

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. The coal mining industry is being called upon to vastly increase production in the coming years. Many mining operations will have to prepare an environmental impact report of some kind and all will have to comply with various types of environ- mental regulations. Therefore there is a great need within the industry for access to environmental data, information, and literature. This paper discusses the informational resources available, the current lack of access to these resources, and the Environmental Data, Information and Literature (EDIL) Bank of the Kentucky Institute for Mining and Minerals Research. The bank's major emphasis concerns the environmental, social and economic aspects of producing clean solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels from coal. The data bank promotes information interchange between other related governmental and private projects and the energy development community.

Blast furnaces of high specific throughput capacities producing 10,000 tpd of pig iron or even more, require burden materials which, because of their chemical, physical and metallurgical properties, guarantee such high performances. Meanwhile, it should be generally accepted that for evaluating the quality of iron ore pellets, it is not sufficient to know the chemical analysis and the physical properties, i.e. grain size distribution, cold compression strength and abrasion of the fired pellets. It is indispensable to determine the metallurgical properties indicated by swelling, reduction-softening under load and reducibility, as well as grain disintegration in the low-temperature range in the beginning of reduction. By introducing new test methods, and in the face of the need to meet more strict requirements, pellet producers are being confronted with steadily increasing tasks and problems which require a deepening of our knowledge of the ways and means of making high-quality iron ore pellets.

An industrial site near the centre of a historical town in Flanders is characterized by chromium(VI) contamination of the groundwater. Since the potential for natural attenuation was not sufficient to control the groundwater plume as observed from different analyses like pH, Eh, soil oxidation and reduction capacity, the feasibility of site remediation based on in-situ bioprecipitation of chromium was examined in lab microcosm studies. By creating reducing conditions by addition of a carbon source in the groundwater, chromium(VI) can be biologically reduced to chromium(III), which can form an insoluble precipitate of chromium(III) hydroxide. Microcosms contained contaminated groundwater and aquifer samples that were collected and manipulated under anaerobic conditions. Three different carbon sources were screened for their effectiveness: molasses from sugar beet production, molasses form starch production (protamylasses) based on potato juice and lactate. The different concentrations of sugar molasses were used to determine the optimal conditions. A range of parameters was monitored at regular time intervals for a period of six months such as chromium(VI) and chromium(III), DOC, methane, pH, Eh. A rapid conversion of chromium(VI) to chromium(III) was observed for all conditions tested. However, extensive removal of chromium from the groundwater by precipitation was only achieved for a limited number of conditions. In general, lactate was found to be the most effective carbon source, slightly better than the lowest concentration of sugar molasses that was tested, which itself was more effective than molasses based on potato. Higher concentrations of molasses, although causing a steeper decline in redox potential, resulted in less effective Cr removal. Typically, the fermentation of molasses results in acidification and this drop in pH may hinder the formation of insoluble chromium(III)hydroxides. It may also be possible that certain components of the molasses form soluble complexes with chromium(III). For lactate, no significant drop in pH was observed. Following the laboratory microcosm tests, the stability of the chromium precipitates was examined by performing a sequential extraction on the microcosm materials. These were performed under redox conditions which were similar to the ones observed in the field. Since the outcome of these tests was positive, a pilot scale test was implemented in the field in April 2005. Two different substrates, the cheap waste product sugar molasses and lactate are being injected creating two different impact zones and typical parameters are monitored. Frequent re-injections were important to maintain reduced conditions and are carried out three-weekly up to now. To study the stability of precipitates formed, mesocosm socks containing aquifer material were installed in the monitoring wells and harvested at regular intervals. Results of this pilot test will be presented and compared to the laboratory results. Based on the success of this field test, a full scale process will be designed and implemented as remediation strategy.

A shield on a tunneling machine has two basic purposes. Firstly to provide temporary support in unstable ground, maintaining the integrity of the bore and protecting the operators, and secondly, in conjunction with other sealing devices, to prevent the ingress of water. In any specific tunnel, unstable ground and water may or may not occur together. Further, there are a number of different ground behaviors that may be termed unstable and these must be defined in order to determine the most suitable type of machine. Beyond the shield itself, the cutterhead and the mucking system design are critical in successfully traversing difficult geology. In any but the shortest tunnels, variations in the geological conditions and the requirement of an acceptable advance rate can impose increasing degrees of sophistication in the machine design. In this paper we will review current designs of shielded type machines and their application, and discuss new developments which blend hard and soft ground tunneling technology. We will also indicate that in some conditions, although first impressions seem to favor a shielded machine, in fact an open gripper TBM may be the wisest choice.

The soft kriging algorithm allows interpolating these priors into posterior probability distributions of the unknown. The curse of ?negative kriged grades? is solved. The consideration of additional soft information, whenever deemed necessary, becomes possible within the framework of well-proven kriging techniques.

Near misses can enhance awareness of the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, the value of these reports and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks are unclear. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. The analysis provides insight into ways that risk-communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.

The Kubota surface melting system has been under development since 1975. It has found commercial application on the melting of municipal sludge, and ash from solid waste. The melted product has physical properties allowing its use as a substitute for aggregate in cement and asphaltic construction. This paper describes the surface melting system, its current use and anticipated future use.

"Phosphate" is a misnomer as often used. The word is increasingly used to refer to any material containing phosphorus - an element essential to any form of life. Phosphate rock, a mineral - fluorapitate - is recovered from Florida's sedimentary deposits in particle sires ranging from 0.1 to 13.0 millimeter. This product of mining, washing, screening, and flotation is commonly called "phosphate". Its phosphorus content, measured and reported as P2O5, varies from 29% to 35%, and is essentially insoluble. "Phosphate" is also used to describe products containing soluble phosphorus obtained from acidulation of phosphate rock with mineral acids; primarily, sulfuric acid. Many miners have nearby chemical plants wherein phosphate rock is converted into upgraded products such as phosphoric acid, superphosohates, and ammonium phosphates with 45% to 70% P205, soluble and suitable for use as fertilizer. The rock and upgraded products are all commonly called "phosphate"; the plants, "phosphate plants' and the producers collectively are known as the "phosphate industry". The public in Central Florida generally loses identification of the individual operators that include major corporations such as IMC. Williams Companies, W.R. Grace, Mobil, Embark, U.S. Steel, Borden, American Cyanamid and others. They all become just a "phosphate company".

Geologists searching for carbonate rocks suitable for chemical uses traditionally have relied on extensive laboratory testing in order to locate strata or zones that might be suitable for mining. However, when considering the significant time and costs involved in sampling and performing chemical analyses, any exploration technique whereby fewer samples and analyses are needed would be of great value. In other words, if the exploration geologist could "zero-in" on select areas, considerable time and money could be saved. In general, the major-element chemistry of carbonate rocks is determined by the abundance of the minerals present. CaO occurs with CO2 as the mineral calcite, which is the primary mineral comprising allochems, matrix and sparry cement; MgO is found in high-magnesium calcite (many calcite fossil species contain appreciable amounts of MgO in solid solution), dolomite, and chlorite; iron occurs in pyrite and in limonitic stylolites, as well as in chloritic and glauconitic clay minerals; materials containing abundant Si02 are microcrystalline quartz (chest) silt-sized quartz, and clay minerals; and Al203 is found primarily in illitic, kaolinitic, and chloritic clay minerals. The presence or absence of these minerals determines the chemical composition of the carbonate rooks.

Conductive metal powders are important building blocks for today's micro-electronic circuitry. Formulated into inks, they provide the interconnects needed to complete a complex integrated circuit and the means to enter the world of miniaturization. Traditionally, the inks have been based upon expensive metals such as silver, palladium, platinum and gold because of their excellent electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion and oxidation. The use of a copper based ink, as an alternative to precious metal inks, recently has received considerable attention. Instability in the prices and limited supply of certain precious metal systems have driven up production costs, making the development of a lower cost copper system more attractive to manufacturers. However, lower production costs are on1 y real ized if performance and reliability can be maintained. While the development has been driven by cost, copper does offer some significant performance advantages over noble metal systems: conductivity as good as silver and 4W better than gold; leach resistance better than silver and equal to gold; stability at high frequencies better than gold or silver; strong film bonding characteristics; and compatibility with most solders. These benefits, however, do not come without cost. The inherently reactive nature of pure copper, while providing unique performance properties, makes it difficult to process. Unl i ke precious metals which can be fired in air, copper would oxidize and so requires special furnaces and atmospheres. Despite these difficulties, the transition from precious metal thick film systems to copper is gaining momentum. Manufacturers of high density, high performance circuitry are exploring the performance advantages of copper over gold and silver and the manufacturers of consumer products are considering the potential cost savings of copper over silver-palladium. Sherritt has developed a fine copper powder for this industry. Through association with the ink manufacturers, it has been found that performance properties of the ink vary with the physical and chemical characteristics of the powder. Production Process The production of very fine copper powders at Sherritt is based upon the disproportionation of cuprous ions as outlined in Equation [1] (1).
