Concentrate flowrates have been measured for the flotation of -100 mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer controlled 0.076 m x 3.5 m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height), air flow rate, and solid feed concentration. The size distribution of concentrate and tailings samples were determined. The results obtained show that the concentrate flow rate was independent of collection zone height, but dependent on the gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of these fundamental operational parameters.

One of the rare consensual points among different resource-based economic analytical approaches refers to the strategic role of rent from mineral extraction, as a decisive tool to ensure that the temporary wealth generated in the present can turn into permanent income in the future. For this reason, evaluation, distribution and use of mining rent plays a central role in the sustainable development of mining cities. Brazilian legislation provides for this at the municipal level by means of participation in the financial results of mineral extraction accomplished in these municipalities, with the Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration (CFEM). CFEM is a type of ad valorem royalty, which charges taxes of up to 3% of the net revenue of mineral production. However, legislation does not establish how these resources should be used. Therefore, there is wide variation in the use of CFEM income among Brazilian mining cities. A study from a sample of the 15 largest mining cities in eight Brazilian states made possible identification of two main patterns with regards to the use of CFEM which were labeled "sustained use" and " the pitfall of the single treasury." In that regard, this article discusses the pressuring factors that contribute to these patterns, as well as the institutional arrangements which may be more favorable to inducing more sustained use of CFEM.

This work describes the effect of process parameters on the acidulation of Moroccan phosphate rock using nitric acid, i.e., the nitro-phosphate process. A series of bench scale experiments were conducted, using a stirred tank reactor (STR) system, to investigate the chemical reactions involved and optimum conditions for the formation of nitro-phosphate fertilizer. The effect of reaction time, temperature, mixing speed, acidulation ratio, and acid concentration were investigated, and were found to have an effect on the dissolution of P2O5 from the phosphate rock, using nitric acid. An increase in nitric acid concentration resulted in an increase in P2O5 dissolution, however, the dissolution was also found to be a function of acidulation ratio. A nitric acid phosphate rock ratio of 4:l ensured 90% dissolution for nitric acid concentration > 30%.

In relation with the construction of the Sölk power station in Steiermark, Austria, tenders were called in October, 1976, for the construction of the 12-km "Donnersbach collector tunnel" by "Steirische Wasserkraftund Elektrizitäts AG". The specified showed both conventional blast tunneling as well as mechanical excavation with a tunneling machine, diameter 3.55 m. Total construction time from the date of the invitation to tender was given as 4 years. Part of the project was the construction of a concrete circular tunnel lining 20 cm thick. In 1977 the contract was awarded to "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donnersbach", a joint venture formed by two companies, G. Hinteregger & Söhne, Salzburg, and G. Hinteregger, Bregenz. It provided for the project to be carried out with a tunnel boring machine. GEOLOGICAL DATA The entire tunnel was to be bored through a complex of the garnet mica schist group of the Wölz schists formations. These range from highly quartz-bearing to quartzitic mica schists, with thick, discordantly interstratified beds of marble and dolomite. Preface Pipe heading is a customary and proven technology for the underground installation of all types of piping. In over 90 % of all cases, straight pipe sections are used between shaft constructions since, e.g. this follows roadways or it is necessary from the operational aspect due to pipe control methods, e.g. to use a remote control pipe sensor or comparable control devices within sight from shaft to shaft. Frequently, a straight pipeline is impossible, and is replaced by a more or less spatial alignment due to surface conditions, structures in the ground or foundations. This situation applied for the construction of the Nebensammler Neuland (intercepting sewer) in Hamburg-Neuland for sections IV and V. The following paper is not intended as a description of the complete project. It deals mainly with the special features of this pipe heading, with what I believe to be its somewhat unusual route. In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

An exploration bore core sample of coal ought to be reduced from its original cylindrical form to a particle size distribution and particle composition that reflects, insofar as possible, a process stream of? raw? coal it represents. Often, coal cores are reduced with a laboratory crushing machine, the product of which may not match the raw coal size distribution or size fraction composition. This study employs drop-shatter impact breakage followed by dry batch tumbling in a steel cylinder rotated about its transverse axis in order to characterize the core material in terms of first-order and zeroth-order breakage rate constants. These are indices of the propensity of the coal to degrade during excavation and handling. Initial drop-shatter and dry tumbling tests were done with synthetic cores, to reduce material variables and . conserve difficult-to-obtain coal cores.? Cores of three different coal beds --Illinois No.6, Upper Freeport, and Pocahontas No. 5 -were subjected to drop-shatter and dry batch tumbling tests to determine breakage response. Comparison of coal preparation plant feed with a crushed bore core and a bore core prepared by drop-shatter and tumbling (all from the same Illinois No.6 coal mining property) indicated that the size distribution and size fraction composition of the drop-shattered/tumbled core more closely resembled the plant feed than the crushed core.

Abandoned mines in parts of the Black Hills of South Dakota have the potential for acid rock drainage. For this work, ten sites were examined on Black Hills National Forest land or on private land whose drainage could affect Forest Service land. Water samples from all the sites had pH values less than 6. Results of analyses from water samples and rock samples showed a correlation between metals content and pH. Acid-base accounting was used to determine acid drainage potential of the sites. One site (King of the West Mine) had a high potential for acid generation; fortunately, little or no surface runoff leaves the mine site. Six sites appeared to have moderate potential, including the Minnesota Ridge Mine, which currently is being remediated. Three of the sites had low acid drainage potential.

The Questa Molybdenite Mine provides a unique opportunity to study the geochemical dispersion of various hydrothermal events, utilizing drill hole analyses. Numerous post-ore factors have altered the primary ore-related geochemical dispersions to the present day configuration, e. g. dikes, faults, hydrothermal convection cells, and weathering. Due to the interaction of an andesitic volcanic pile with the silicic-alkalic generated volatiles, the geochemical haloes of the Goat Hill deposit demonstrate a marked divergence from the classic Climax-type molybdenite ore body. Certainly, however, the similarities to the Climax-type ore body are apparent as potassically-rich fluids have invaded the highly reactive country rock.

Carbon in the form of coke is used as a reactant in various chemical and metallurgical processes, The high cost of by-product coke along with its periodic lack of availability and high investment necessary for additional by-product recovery facilities indicate the need for a low-cost production unit based on a new procedure for coke manufacture, Traveling-grate coking-stokers were developed by Shawinigan Chemicals Ltd. to produce coke required for carbide manufacture, They were adapted to kilns so that the hot volatile gases could be used for lime burning, Their operation has been described in various patent disclosures (1, 2, 3), and their application to rotary lime burning kilns has been described by Andersen (4). Details of the process and plants have also been published by Kurt Baum (5,6).

Ore reserve estimation at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. open-pit oil sands mine in Northern Alberta has evolved since the project's inception. Early techniques followed a conventional petroleum reservoir analysis format, with relatively widely-spaced drill holes and semiquantitative grade data. Experience has developed a more standard mining approach, including classification of geological materials by both lithology and sedimentary origin, timely and multi-purpose drill holes, precise analytical data, empirical recovery factors, a computerized geological data base, and an ore body block model. Future efforts will involve enhancement of existing techniques, use of geostatistical algorithms, quantification of confidence limits, and improved control of the ore model by geological parameters.

JIM HANDLEY: Before we get to the third and final session, I want to introduce my co-conspirator for this session, John Mansanti. John is manager of milling with Newrnont Gold Company, Carlin, Nevada, and was very active in securing participation in this innovative symposium. I'm Jim Handley and I'm with Cyprus-Amax Minerals at the Sierrita copper and molybdenum mine. Our third presentation is titled "Geared Up or Wrapped Up?" I hear this topic discussed, but never at great length. I think that's because the opinions are fairly strong and diverse, and people generally aren't reinforced properly in their arguments. The first person to enlighten us on this topic is Scott Bird. He has more than 20 years with Kennecott, is a graduate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Utah, and is currently operations superintendent and deals with this phenomenon every day.

The Gaudin lecture is devoted to fundamentals. Given my involvement with column flotation over the last 20 years, this is my topic. I have tried to identify spinoff basic research and provide a personal list of favorites. Two are selected for discussion here. They are single bubble rise and bubble surface area flux. The rationale for such work, as well as some of the findings, are reviewed. Support for fundamental work seems as volatile as the economy (and the link is probably not coincidental). I hope some utility to the minerals industry is evident in the text. Column flotation in its current form originated in the early 1960s. The method was invented by Boutin, patented by Boutin and Tremblay and pursued doggedly by Wheeler. Their aim was to overcome the problem of mechanical entrainment of fine particles in the water carried by the bubbles, which they were convinced contributed to lowering flotation concentrate grades (Wheeler, 1988; Finch and Dobby, 1990). The solution was a combination of columnar geometry, the addition of wash water into a deep froth and the maintenance of an excess of water to the tailings, as compared to the feed (a so-called positive bias). Success at Les Mines Gaspe, Quebec, on cleaning Mo in the early 1980s signaled the start of industrial acceptance, making the column one of the flotation machines of choice today. Over the next 20 years, column applications mushroomed to cover virtually all mineral commodities, as well as nonmineral applications such as soil decontamination, deoiling of water and deinking of recycled paper. In the wake, research groups are continuing to probe the fundamentals, conferences and workshops have been transferring the technology and specialist companies have emerged to service the demand. Innovations were triggered as problems arose (for instance, in gas injection systems) and novel flotation cells, much in vogue in the 1990s, had the door opened. Mechanical cell manufacturers have not been idle - there is nothing like competition to provoke a fresh look at an established business. Flotation-cell technology has probably not seen so much activity since the patent rush in the early days of flotation, which occurred around the turn of the century. For an industry often considered reluctant to risk innovation, this is not a bad record. A good idea will find a place, but patience (not always an innovators strong suit) and careful preparation are required. Two books (Finch and Dobby, 1990; Rubenstein, 1996), three symposia (Sastry, 1988; Agar and Huls, 1991; Gomez and Finch, 1996), and a series of reviews (Dobby and Finch, 1991; Finch and Dobby, 1991; Finch, 1995; Finch et al., 1995) document the period. Like many good ideas, column flotation has been overexposed, and there have been disappointments. The southwestern United States has an abundance of natural lightweight aggregate (NLA) deposits of volcanic origin that are being used in the construction industry within the region. New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California utilize NLA in portland cement concrete and concrete masonry units for weight reduction and related economic reasons. The geological environment of the western United States is amenable to the occurrence of natural lightweight rocks because it contains Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic products that include low-density glass and vesicular material. There are two major classical types of natural lightweight materials of igneous origin; pumice and cinder. These account for the vast majority of volcanic rocks that are presently utilized as NLA. Pumice is an ejecta product generally found as part of tuffaceous units associated with nearby siliceous volcanic centers. Cinder, also an ejecta product, is associated with mafic volcanics and is most often found as a cinder cone. Both are highly vesicular. A third type of natural lightweight material, though also associated with siliceous volcanics, is less vesicular than pumice. It is best described as being a slightly pumiceous rhyolite or rhyolite-tuff breccia that occurs as a siliceous dome or tuft unit that is most likely to be glassy. Uses of these natural lightweight rocks center on the construction industry where they are utilized in lightweight portland cement concrete and lightweight concrete masonry units. The major reason for usage in portland cement concrete is cost saving effected by weight reduction in high-rise construction. The major usage in concrete masonry units, or "block", is for weight reduction that enables a mason to lay more lock.

The use of activated alumina for the removal of selenium from heap leach detoxification solutions was studied at a laboratory scale. Three different aluminas were studied, one unmodified and two chemically modified to function better in a basic pH range. The best performer, Discovery Chemicals DD-6, readily accumulated selenium oxyanions. Furthermore, it could be stripped of selenium and several metals by a mild caustic solution (pH 11.5 – 12.0) and regenerated for further use. Tests using - 600 µm, + 300 µm (28 x 48 mesh) material indicated that 96 % could be removed from solution and using – 1.18mm, + 600 µm (14 x 28 mesh) material 91 % could be removed. However, soluble silica can accumulate on the activated alumina and subsequently interfere with its regeneration and should be removed from the detox solution prior to use of the adsorbent.

INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the common term used for the mineral fluorite, which is naturally occurring calcium fluoride (CaF2). It is the principal source of fluorine, the most reactive of the chemical elements, from which a great variety of unique and strategically important chemicals are produced. Commercial deposits of fluorspar are widespread throughout the world, and its availability is essential to the industrial progress of all nations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY In its pure form fluorspar, CaF2, contains 51.1% calcium and 48.9% fluorine, and has a sp gr of 3.18 and a hardness of 4. It is commonly a glassy mineral. colorless, white, or grayish. but may also be various shades of purple, pink, blue, green, yellow, or tan. It belongs to the cubic system mineralogically, and commonly crystallizes into cubic shapes in vugs and cavities, although most of it is massive, with interlocking crystals. Pattern recognition, speech processing, financial analysis, signal processing and process control are at present the most successful ones. This paper is an attempt to illustrate the potentiality of ANN applied to mineral processing. An introduction to the technology of ANN is first proposed to describe the various components and to explain the various phases encountered in setting up a network. Then examples are given to illustrate the use of ANN dynamic modelling of mineral processing units or plants and in process control.

The mining industry has recently been. - experiencing a difficult period. Escalating costs, lower grades and deeper level mining, are a few of .the reasons' why interactive graphics or CADD (computer aided design and draughting) systems are increasingly being used. CADD systems which support powerful and flexible mining applications have great potential for making all forms of mining more efficient and effective. There are many application programs which address almost every aspect of mining. Most of these programs originated to satisfy a particular need. Graphics and other features were added until they, reached a point where they were commercially viable as a mining package. Because of their evolution these packages, lack many CADD-type features. Today there are powerful personal computers (PC's) and engineering workstations running the best CADD systems available. These systems, support hundreds of applications in almost every discipline. Mining was until recently not well supported by interactive graphics vendors because of the highly variable nature of mining and the lack of common standards. Users of CADD systems have experienced the benefits of CADD and come to expect similar features from graphic mining packages. Several developers of mining packagers have either attempted to include some CADD features or make their packages compatible with one or other CADD system. Mining can benefit greatly From a combination of interactive graphics (or CADD) and the right mining application software.
