"Mine refuge shelters are designed to protect mine workers from hazardous environmental conditions after a mine disaster, but high temperature and humidity levels inside these shelters may pose a significant safety risk. Due to the safety risks associated with human testing, detailed thermal models of shelters and human occupants have been developed using TAITherm simulation software. These models are used to predict the temperature and humidity within the shelter resulting from metabolic heating, evaporation due to sweat and respiration, moisture and heat from the shelter’s carbon dioxide scrubbing system, and heat transfer within the shelter. A detailed human thermoregulation model simulates the sensible and latent heat generated by the shelter occupants, and predicts the occupant’s body core temperature and moisture lost due to sweating and respiration. This information is used to assess the safety of the shelter. In this paper we will review technical details of the human thermal model, validation comparing the human model to human subject test data, and results of a mine shelter analysis. INTRODUCTION Portable mine refuge chambers are used in US coal mines to provide protection to mine workers from hazardous conditions following a traumatic event. Although these shelters are designed to supply clean air and sustenance for up to 96 hours, prolonged exposure to the mine shelter environment itself can pose a substantial risk to human safety. Heat generated by the shelter occupants combined with heat from the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system can raise the shelter interior temperatures and relative humidity to dangerous levels that can lead to heat stress in humans. Unfortunately, the thermal burden associated with mine shelter exposure is not well characterized due to potential hazards associated with underground human subject testing. In order to assess the thermal burden on people within a mine shelter environment, a detailed thermal model was created to accurately predict the temperatures and humidity within the shelter, as well as the impact of these environmental conditions on human occupants. The model consists of a mobile inflatable tent-type mine shelter, 23 humans, and also includes the surrounding mine environment. The thermal simulations were performed using ThermoAnalytics' validated commercial heat transfer prediction code, TAITherm (v12.0). Additionally, TAITherm's Human Thermal Module (HTM) provided the capability to simultaneously model the thermo-physiology of 23 unique humans contained within the mine shelter. The human thermal models accounted for the thermal interaction with the environment and also provided a core temperature response prediction, which can be used to evaluate survivability in heat stress situations [1]."

Numerous articles have been written about the coal mine ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. How- ever, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers' Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio's, and in 1876 by Maryland's. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. In 1907 near the town of Fairmont, WV, there were, within three days, two explosions resulting in a total of 597 deaths. Because of this, the federal government took action and by 1910, the US Bureau of Mines had been established. This was perhaps the most significant change in health and safety for miners during the first half of the 20th century as the USBM concentrated its entire efforts in the study, research, and testing of methods totally directed towards improvement of the health and safety of the miner. After a mine disaster in Illinois, a federal law was passed in 1940 calling for federal coal mine inspectors. Then in 1969, Congress enacted the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act following a mine explosion near Farmington, WV. In 1977, the law was revised and included noncoal mining operations.

The effluent from the bio-oxidation of arsenopyrite contains high concentrations of iron(III) and arsenic(V), the pH being in the range 1.0-1.3. The use of lime to increase the pH causes the precipitation of calcium sulfate, calcium arsenate and a mixture of solids containing calcium, iron and arsenic. The presence of calcium is due to slaked lime encapsulated by the iron arsenate precipitates. These iron arsenate solids are related to known minerals. The use of sodium hydroxide to effect the precipitation of iron and arsenic produces solids which are more stable than those produce by using slaked lime. The use of limewater produces an initial precipitate of calcium arsenate.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

It is generally agreed that C.C. White was the first to describe and market coal mine roof trusses beginning as early as 1967. White was issued a patent in 1969 1. Coal mine roof trusses were extensively used in the 1970’s, and their use has proven valuable in many difficult conditions. Beginning in the mid 1990’s, several types of bar/cable trusses have been introduced. A new and innovative bar/cable truss recently introduced offers several advantages. By eliminating many small parts, and simplifying the installation, these new trusses are much easier and faster to install, thereby increasing operator safety.

Fermilab is constructing a large underground cavern in Limestone to house scientific equipment. The cavern will have a complex L-shaped geometry and about 215-foot depth with relatively shallow rock cover, with service/egress shafts accesses into the cavern. Three-dimensional analytical models were developed to study the ground behavior and support performance. Multiple rock constitutive and failure models were evaluated. The models were significantly impacted by the high lateral in-situ earth pressure at the site. This paper will describe the design approaches that were taken to optimize the cavern arch geometry to allow safe construction in shallow rock, and permanent support requirements.

One of the most important considerations in the efficient operation of an under¬ground mine is the haulage system. Often the determining factor between profit or loss is the quick removal of ore and waste from the working places to secondary and main-line haulage areas, and so on to the outside. Important, too, is moving supplies from the surface to the working faces so that the loading process can continue with little interruption. Men must he transported in a rapid but safe manner. It has been through the efficient use and generally the combination of mine cars, track, belt conveyors and rubber-tired haulage equipment that underground operations have been able to compete with the more popular strip or surface mining. As near-surface ore bodies are exhausted, underground haulage will play an expanding part in economically furnishing the world's needs for all types of minerals. The choice of underground haulage equipment, wherever possible, should be one that will give the smallest overall cost of ore removal during the life of the mine while meeting necessary safety requirements. The reader is referred to Sec. 12 for equipment such as scrapers and load-dump-¬haul units that perform loading as well as haulage duties. 14.1-MINE CARS AND TRACK NILES E. GROSVENOR Main-Line and Secondary Haulage-Many mines today use a combination of belt and rail haulage. Even if a- belt system is used to carry the product from the face to the surface, track is used to transport workmen and supplies. A track system, when properly installed, will provide interruption-free and safe haulage. Schrecengost 2 lists the following as major advantages of track haulage: 1. Safety in transporting men in and out of the mine in personnel cars. 2. Easy and rapid transportation of supervisory personnel. 3. A temporary shutdown occasioned by a roof fall or power failure along the haulage system will not shut down the production areas. 4. Quick availability of repair parts and supplies. 5. Large pieces of coal or rock can be handled without damage to the haulage equipment. 6. In areas where quality fluctuates noticeably, different cars may be separated out for special preparation. 7. Rock or equipment may be loaded and moved out of the mine without interference with the production or preparation of the coal. 14.1.1-MINE CARS Mine cars with steel bodies are used in all types of present-day mining. Wooden cars usually are more bulky and less resistant to wear and damage, but are more easily repaired. Regardless of the type of mine car selected, it is most practical to standardize on one type or make to simplify repairs and limit the amount of spare parts necessary to stock. Rigid-body flat-bottomed cars are simpler and usually lower than others of equal capacity. The function of the mine surveyor is to (a) provide a network of points of accurately known position, covering the entire mine property, (b) obtain the required data for the preparation of useful maps and sections! (c) provide position and directional control for the guidance of the operations, (d) measure the progress of the work, (e) measure the movement of rock masses, and (f) make miscellaneous surveys as needed. Mining properties range from the very small to the extremely large, and from those which involve only surface operations to those involving extensive underground workings. Active mines undergo constant change, necessitating continual updating of the surveys. The differences in the character of the deposits, the scale of mining and the mining methods result in large differences in the surveyor's activities and techniques, but many of the problems involved are common to most mines. The surface work of the mine surveyor is very similar to that, of the plane surveyor in that control points are established by triangulation, trilateration and traversing. Detail is taken by direct measurement, by stadia and by aerial photography. The equipment used, the techniques and the methods of processing the resulting data are likewise very similar. However, the underground work is quite different : A. The lines of sight frequently must be carried through constricted openings, often involving short lines of sight and awkward setups. B. The lighting often is poor, requiring illumination of the backsights and foresights, and the crosshairs. C. The ambient conditions often are difficult, involving falling water, high tem- peratures, poor visibi 'kv and heavy traffic through the area being suneyed. D. The surrounding rock map be unstable, resulting in movement or loss of the surveying stations, as well as hazard to the surveyors. E. The points to be measured often are difficult or impossible to reach. F. Steep vertical sights often are necessary, requiring the use of special equipment. G. Many working levels commonly are involved, requiring the transfer of position and orientation to each with a high level of precision. This section therefore will concentrate on surveying problems peculiar to the mine surveyor, chiefly underground work. 22.1-THE MINE COORDINATE SYSTEM A system of coordinates is essential for all permanent mining operations It is very desirable that all mining operations in a ,given area b~ tied into the same system, as this minimizes problems of boundaries and connections Whenever possible this system should be tied into and made part of the state or regional grid system. It is desirable to orient the coordinate grid on a true-north line and to position the origin of the coordinates so that all of the work will be in the "northeast" quadrant, making the north and east coordinates always positive. This can be done by subtracting suitable constant values from the north and east coordinates of the regional system The residual values are of more convenient magnitude and can be used as the local mine coordinates. If the long axis of the mineralization is not generally north-south or east-west.

Coal exploration may be defined as the acquisition of data necessary to define and acquire a block of coal which can be mined at a profit. Unlike ore minerals, coal resources are widespread and relatively abundant with supply exceeding demand in almost every case. Thus simple discovery of coal is generally not enough. The chemical and physical variability of individual coal seams, the capital intensive nature of coal mine development, and the changing patterns of utilization require that a multiphase, three-dimensional evaluation be made of each potential reserve. Factors which must be investigated include not only the quantity and quality of the coal but also the geologic, hydrologic, and engineering characteristics of the seam and its surrounding strata. Acquisition of property to provide a secure base for exploration and mine development is equal in importance to the geologic and engineering programs. The successful development of a coal reserve requires that control of coal and, in the case of a strip mine, the surface be in the form of contiguous blocks of sufficient size to support mining.

"Top-down wall construction was selected to excavate the tunnel portal headwall areas of the ORB East End Crossing tunnel. Benefits included an expedited construction schedule realized by staging excavation and rock support with development of temporary construction access roads. Rock mass properties, proximity to right-of-way lines, and blasting impacts were considered to design suitable lift heights, intermediate bench locations, and permanent ground support systems to provide supported permanent excavations. Carbonate rock formations contained adverse subsurface geotechnical features including solution cavities, clay seams, weathered joints, pinnacled rock, and boulders, which were addressed by flexibility in design. The resulting over-break conditions and long-term water infiltration issues required economic design solutions. This paper discusses the unique considerations required during design of top-down tunnel portal headwalls excavated in carbonate rock formations including temporary excavation and permanent ground support systems which provided flexibility for unforeseen over-break, minimized construction delays, and provided long-term stability. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East End Crossing is an approximate 8-mile highway connection of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing (ORBEE) project. Currently under construction, this connection will link State Road 265 in Indiana with the Gene Snyder Freeway in Kentucky to form an outer loop bypassing the Louisville-Southern Indiana metropolitan area. This highway project features a 2,510-foot long, three-span cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River, and a 1,680-foot long tunnel. The project, being managed by the Indiana Finance Authority and Indiana Department of Transportation, is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2016. The new twin three-lane tunnel under the historic Drumanard Estate requires steep cut excavations for approach and tunnel portal walls on the order of 60 feet deep through overburden soil and carbonate bedrock formations. This paper focuses on the design considerations for the permanent support of the top-down wall construction of the tunnel portal headwalls and approach retaining walls."

ENERGY POI.ICY-PRINCIPLES AND THEIR PRACTICE Persistently, at least since the end of World War 11, governments have intervened broadly, deeply, and incoherently in major energy markets. If we take a broad definition of energy that encompasses gas distribution and electric power, we can observe regulations of even older vintage. This trend, of course, is not unique to energy. Expansion of government controls has occurred in many areas. The relevant basic question about energy regulation, therefore, is not why is energy special, but whether any general principles exist to explain the wisdom of existing regulations. This review takes place at a time, the middle 1980s, in which a massive onslaught is being undertaken against government regulation. However, the present chapter is influenced primarily by my observations of the failures of energy regulations and not by any inspiration from those ideologically opposed to government intervention. Several subquestions arise in policy appraisal. A primary need is to establish clear objectives and determine the consistency between these goals and the policies imposed. Thus, the first step is to set objectives. The next is to outline ways to attain these goals. However, it should be recognized that many apparently distinct options are economically equivalent. When the goal is to charge producers or consumers for something, it is possible to attain the same result through either government ownership or taxing private transactions. The tax can raise the price to the level the government would have charged if it were the owner. Creation of a Department of Energy is not necessarily any different from having separate energy agencies well coordinated by some small supervisory body. Thus, a distinction should be made between substance and form in policymaking. The critical substance concerns such matters as whether the government imposes financial penalties, incentives, or rules to attain a goal. Then, there can be many equivalent ways to implement the basic policy form. The second prior illustration suggests that one favorite question is how to attain proper integration of policy. At various times, voices on either (or even both) sides of the Atlantic have called for a coordinated energy policy. The U.S. Paley Commission made this a primary goal for future policy. The western European governments that were the founding members of the Coal and Steel, Economic, and Atomic Energy Communities spent much time in the middle fifties and much of the sixties trying futilely to agree on an energy policy. (See Gordon, 1970 for an annotated review). The energy price rises of the 1970s rekindled United States interest in coordination. However, astute observers of the problem such as O. C. Herfindahl of the United States and Maurice Allais (1 962) in France warned the discussions confused form with substance. The crucial issues were what were the goals and what were the best types of policies to attain such goals. Policy suffered, not from poor organization, but from discord about the goals and how to attain them. All this suggests that we need principles to guide policy appraisal. The branch of economic theory known as welfare economics concentrates on providing guidance about the problems of policymaking. The theory examines both what

The way and methods used for the surface mining of bauxite until the end of the twentieth century in the area of Ghiona, resulted in a significant burden to the natural environment, especially in the cases where it covered extended parts of forests and forest areas as well as important geomorphological formations. The impacts from the surface mining of bauxite which in fact constitute the object of this study relate mainly to the interruption of the natural continuity of the land relief and the alteration of the natural geomorphological activities and are due to: a) the alternating excavations with fronts of great heights, b) the depositions of large volumes of waste materials which originate from the revealing of the ore and c) the dense road network constructed in order to get access to the mine locations.

Within the investigation works for the Copenhagen Cityring metro, Geo/CMT have carried out 90 geotechnical boreholes. Together with the previously available investigation, this resulted in more than 15 km of vertical drillings and several thousands of laboratory tests. The design is made for 17 stations, four shafts and two parallel 16 km long tunnels. The geotechnical investigation and design have been carried out in several stages comprising appropriate refinement of structural design and design of excavation operations, including TBM break-in and launching operations at each station shaft. Acceptance of the solution and / or refinement of the investigation and design schedule in the next stage were based on the geological conditions, area availability at surface level, planning and cost-control criteria. The applied recursive design refinement is presented herein with an example of the Østersøgade shaft location.

The accurate determination of free cyanide and metal cyanide complexes is of increasing interest to Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP) gold extraction operations as cyanide consumption is an important economic factor in the processing of complex ores. Characteristically complex ores are high cyanide consumers and these ores usually contain a range of sulfide minerals e.g. covellite (CuS), digenite (Cu1,S), chalcocite (Cu, S), Pyrrhotite (Feci-x)S), marcasite (FeS2), arsenic and antimony sulfides and zinc sulfide. These minerals can consume significant quantities of cyanide, e.g. various copper(!) cyanide complexes such as CuCN, Cu(CN)2·, Cu(CN)/ and Cu(CN)/ can form, depending on the cyanide to copper ratio in solution. Measurement of free and complexed cyanide is thus a prerequisite for efficient cyanide dosage control. Free cyanide can be determined potentiometrically or amperometrically but the methods are prone to error and are laborious [1]. Metal cyanide complexes can be determined by reverse phase HPLC, however, the species ofa single cation (e.g. Cu(CN)i-, Cu(CN);2 and Cu(CN)/) elute as one species [2]. Additionally the high amount of suspended matter in CIP leach solutions tends to introduce errors. Raman spectroscopy has the potential to be used as an in­line or on-line method of analysis. Free cyanide and the cyanides of gold, silver, copper and iron have been studied in aqueous alkaline solutions with a view to developing such a method. Spectra were obtained with a Bruker RFSl00 FT-Raman spectrometer using a 1064 nm laser delivering 800 mW of power at the sample. Depending on the solution, 250, 1000 or 4000 scans at 4 cm-1 resolution were accumulated. The cyanide stretches observed were relatively narrow (10 15 cm-1 full width at half height) and well resolved (Figure 1 ).

Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors.

Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the US. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and air- ways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof because the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight movements that are frequently hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support.

Its mission is to assess the feasibility of siting a nuclear waste repository in the basalt formations which underlie the Hanford Site of the U.S. Department of Energy. The progress in all program areas is summarized in this paper. Activities conducted to date have led to the identification of possible repository candidate sites within the Hanford Site.

COAL CHARACARISTICS AND PREPREPARATION REQUIREMENTS Preparation and Market Specifications The national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1977 require that when coal is burned, the environmental degradation should be a minimum. For this reason, even coal containing low ash and sulfur must be used in compliance with the NAAQS. The most important pollutants resulting from the combustion of coal are ash, SO2, and NOx gases, and the particulate matter escaping with the combustion gases. The ash is the residue left after complete combustion of coal. It results from the inorganic mineral matter existing in the coal before it is burned. The SO2 results from the combustion of inorganic and organic sulfur associated with the coal. The inorganic sulfur may occur as pyrite, marcasite, or as sulfate sulfur of mostly iron and calcium. The authorities disagree in the definition of organic sulfur in the coal. However, according to ASTM Standard D2492-77,1 the organic sulfur is that sulfur occurring in the coal after subtracting the sum of pyrite and sulfatic sulfurs from the total sulfur in the coal. The NOx gases are produced from high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in the coal that is released into the atmosphere. The particulate matter may consist of fly ash and unburned coal. Selective Mining The cleaning of coal from included ash and sulfur-bearing materials should start at the working faces of surface or underground mines. This can be done by (1) mining only those seams which meet certain quality standards, (2) not mining sections of the seams which may cause deterioration in overall quality of the mined coal, and (3) using a mining method that allows selective mining of coal areas or horizons either underground or on the surface. Since these steps improve the coal quality before the coal reaches the preparation plant, they can be considered to constitute precleaning of coal. During the exploration and development stage of a mine, core and channel samples taken from the coal seam are used to determine (1) petrographic analysis and physical properties,2 (2) character of roof and floor of the seam, 3,4 (3) character and quality of impurities,5 (4) proximate and ultimate analysis, and (5) washability characteristics. However, all of these parameters are subject to considerable variation even within the same seam during the advance of the coal face. This creates a problem in meeting the market demand for coal quality if the coal is to be shipped directly from the mine. "Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the US. More accurately, those explosions were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement; despite current explosion prevention standards. There are 4 basic strategies employed to manage the risk of coal dust explosions in many other coal mining countries around the world: removal of the coal dust, wetting of the coal dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, mixing of the coal dust with stone dust to increase the total incombustible content, and explosion activated barriers which make the entire roadway inert. However, American standards only mandate the first 3 of these 4 methods. It is possible that US coal mine safety measures could benefit from the implementation of the 4th method, the use of explosion barriers. This paper will discuss differences/similarities in barrier regulations used in other countries, as well as some potential difficulties with adapting a stone dust bag barrier system to US underground coal mines. Also, details and feedback gathered from two operating mine site trial barrier installations will be shared.INTRODUCTION Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the United States (US); 29 miners were killed at the Upper Big Branch mine in 2010, 5 at the Darby Mine No. 1 in 2006, 12 at the Sago Mine also in 2006, and 13 at the Jim Walter No. 5 Mine in 2001.[14] To be more accurate, the explosions that killed those miners were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement.[18, 19, 20, 21] These deaths occurred despite current explosion prevention strategies, standards, and regulatory oversight. This poses the question, can more be done in the US to prevent coal dust explosions and their widespread damage. In review of current practices and regulations from several large coal mining countries, a disparity in prevention strategies arose. The main difference between the US and other countries was that the US does not encourage, mandate, or regulate the use of explosion barrier systems as an additional coal dust explosion mitigation measure. This raised many questions. First and foremost was whether or not the US coal mining industry and its miners could benefit, in terms of safety and fatality prevention, from the implementation of the explosion barrier systems that are used in other countries. Furthermore, are there significant differences between the coal mines in countries where explosion barriers are used and US coal mines, which would preclude the system from being adapted and implemented in the US? Also, what are the similarities and differences in explosion barrier systems, use, and regulations between other countries that use them?"
