"With maintenance costs rising and an increasing demand for higher production, the use of sealed spherical roller bearings can reduce maintenance costs while providing increased production uptime. The sealed spherical bearing has increased bearing life by slowing the ingress of contamination. This paper will describe how contamination and bearing wear is reduced by reviewing case histories from coal and metal mines that improved their production by decreasing downtime using sealed spherical roller bearings. INTRODUCTION The spherical roller bearing (SRB) is a robust rolling element bearing that can accommodate high radial loads, low to moderate axial loads, and misalignment with no loss in carrying capacity. (i.e. Figure 1) Because of these characteristics, it is a favorite in mining applications and many other heavy industry applications. Primary applications are the various pulleys on conveyors. Coal and hard rock mines have hundreds of miles of conveyor lines and countless head, tail, drive, and idler pulleys. Maintaining the bearings on these pulleys and replacing bearings that have failed can be a huge expense to a mine in components, labor and downtime. Ideally, the bearings are replaced when the pulley is changed out according to the maintenance cycle, about every 4 years. Reality, however, causes the bearings to be changed out every year, or sooner. These premature bearing replacements can cause production shut downs for as long as 8 hours. Conveyor pulleys have been targeted at many mines as the single biggest maintenance pain point.The primary reason for replacing conveyor bearings is internal wear from fine, solid particle and water ingress through the bearing housing seals. (i.e. Figures 2 & 3) Traditionally, the bearing is mounted in a split pillow block housing (SAF, FSAF, SDAF or SNL are typical industry styles) with only labyrinth seals (LER/LOR) for protection against the ingress of contaminants. The bearings are lubricated with grease. A common way to extend the MTBR is to purge the bearing system with large quantities of grease to flush out the contaminants. If the bearing, and thus the housing seals are not frequently purged with grease, fine solid contaminants enter the housing and bearing through the labyrinth cavities."

"The U.S. stone industry is in a transition from surface quarries to single and multiple level underground stone mines. The factors driving this transition include surface quarries; ? reaching their economic stripping ratio, ? encroaching on the mineral reserve boundary where the remaining reserves are below the active pit, ? dust, noise, and blast vibration concerns as suburban neighborhoods and development move into formerly rural areas. Ground control is critical to the success of a safe and productive, mining operation. The primary focus of the ground control engineer in an underground stone mine is the stability of the roof or back, development and benched pillar stability, stability of the sill pillar between vertically adjacent mining levels, and floor stability. Roof stability begins with the selection of a stable back horizon based upon the presence of a thin shale parting, stylolite, or other discontinuities from which the production shot can easily ""peel"" away leaving a stable back stratum. Room width and the decision of whether to bolt the roof, the bolt length, bolt type, bolt diameter, and spacing of the support is controlled by the thickness, fracture spacing, jointing, and material properties of the back strata. Horizontal stress controls the header and crosscut azimuth as to avoid driving perpendicular to the maximum horizontal stress direction. Stable pillar dimensions depend upon the interaction of the; ? vertical stress resulting from overburden thickness and multiple level interaction of overlying level(s), ? mining height during development and the final mining height after floor shots are taken while benching, ? presence of faults, folds, or joints passing through the pillar, and ? stone lithology recognizing that the presence of oolitic bands, shale partings, and bentonite beds create zones of weakness that can destabilize an otherwise competent pillar. Floor stability is typically not a significant issue for underground stone mines because the bearing capacity of the stone exceeds the vertical pressure transferred through the pillar. However, floor heave can be a ground control issue where shale partings, moisture sensitive strata, weak stone bands, or horizontal stress is present. Roof stability and pillar stability problems can be initiated as the floor heave enables the pillar and roof to settle. The ground control issues for underground stone mines are most clearly presented through a series of case histories. The case histories presented in this paper are a mix of ground failures and successful mining. The focus is on the geotechnical data required for underground stone mine ground control for roof, pillar, and floor design and stability analysis."

The successful selection of a slurry pump depends on the accuracy and completeness of the information provided for the application. Inaccurate or incomplete information can result in incorrect pump selection and / or operational problems. Some information is more critical to the selection process than other information. A full description of the slurry (liquid -solid mixture) including the particle size distribution and maximum concentration, the flow, head and NPSH requirements are most important for successful slurry pump selection and operation. Common problems resulting from improper slurry pump selection will be discussed to illustrate the need for correct selection requirements.

A 200 pound per hour Magnex Pilot Plant was designed and constructed. A non-compliance Eastern Coal which would generate more than 2.0 lb of SOZ per million Btu upon burning was brought into compliance (less than 1.2 lb of S02 per million Btu) during continuous operation of the pilot plant. Approximately 85 percent of the pyritic sulfur was removed while recovering 86 percent of the Btu of the feed coal. Pilot plant operation is summarized and preliminary economics presented. Present status of the Magnex Program is reviewed.

The analysis of mine safety indicators using a scientific method can improve mine safety and assist management in making informed decisions. This research establishes a mine safety evaluation index and proposes an integrative evaluation model based on the entropy weight and grey clustering methods. The index consists of 27 indicators classified into seven criteria: working environment (A), miners’ attributes (B), safety policies and education (E), prevention and control (F), and monitoring and supervision system (G). Using Pakistan’s mine safety situation as a case study, the proposed model categorized the indicators into five safety levels (very low, low, medium, high, very high) for the present situation and for their relevance in terms of future safety improvement. The results show all of the criteria falling into the very low level for the current mine safety situation. Three of the criteria — C, E and G — are identified as having very high levels of significance for future safety improvements.

"Constructed between 1939 and 1945, the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct is 45 miles (72 km) long. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) first identified suspected areas of leakage from the RWBT in the 1990s. A $1 billion project is underway to mitigate the leakage through the construction of a bypass tunnel around the area of most severe deterioration, a 2.5-mile (4 km) section located beneath the Hudson River. Two shafts, 800 and 900 feet (244 and 274 m) below the ground surface, are being sunk to support the tunnel construction. The deep shafts will be subjected to high groundwater pressures and have been designed to accommodate multiple tunnel portals. This paper discusses the engineering decisions and analyses leading up to the final design. INTRODUCTION Project Background The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) provides over 1 billion gallons (3.7 billion liters) of water to over 9 million residents of the City of New York and surrounding communities each day. This water is stored in upstate reservoirs and conveyed to the City via a system of aqueducts and tunnels. Water is delivered to the City almost completely by gravity and consists of three systems: the Croton, the Catskill, and the Delaware. The Delaware System is the largest of the three and supplies between 50% and 70% of the City’s daily water supply. In the 1990s, the NYCDEP discovered leaks in the central 45-mile-long (72 km) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct known as the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT). The leaks release between 15 and 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million liters per day) and are concentrated in two areas near Wawarsing and Roseton, New York. As part of the Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel and Wawarsing Repairs Project (Bypass Tunnel Project), the leaks in the Wawarsing area will be repaired by grouting from inside the existing RWBT, and the leaks in the Roseton area will be mitigated by constructing a bypass tunnel parallel to and 1,750 feet (533 m) north of the leaking portion of the existing RWBT. Two deep shafts will be excavated on either side of the Hudson River: Shaft 5B in Newburgh and Shaft 6B in the Town of Wappinger."

This paper reviews major developments in continuous haulage technology for underground coal mines. Haulage systems in use and development are investigated through a comprehensive literature search and visits to mines and manufacturers. The systems include flexible conveyor train, mobile conveyor, multiple- unit continuous haulage, extensible and belt turning systems. Strengths and weaknesses of the systems are assessed in light of their operating under remote control and their application to the computer-assisted continuous mining machine being developed by the US Bureau of Mines. Through mining scenarios, candidate haulage systems are conceptualized to be consistent with the capabilities of the mining machine.

Growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans on pyrite mineral surfaces and in 9K leach media was studied through estimation of bacterial protein in the different phases. Bacterial attachment was found to be governed by particle size of the mineral, period of incubation and by stationary or agitation conditions used during incubation. Increased bacterial growth in the liquid as well as on the solid phase was observed with decreasing particle size and increasing incubation periods. Increased bacterial attachment to pyrite mineral surfaces was observed to promote iron dissolution.

A computer-assisted resources and sedimentological study of the Andersonville, Georgia kaolin-bauxite district was begun in 1975 under a grant from the Office of Mineral Resources of the U.S. Geological Survey (Grant # 14-08-1110-G-173). A preliminary report on the kaolin and bauxite resources of the district has been placed on open file at the U.S.G.S. in Reston, Virginia; the Georgia-Geological Survey in Atlanta, Georgia; and Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. In addition to a resources estimate, the objectives include the determination of the mineralogical variation, sedimentological parameters, and paleogeographic patterns of the deposition of the high alumina materials and their associated sediments. In the process of compiling data for the resources estimate, isopach maps were developed that provide information as to the shape, size, and distribution of the kaolin deposits and the kaolinitic sediments that contain them. These or similar maps developed for other districts can be useful exploration tools.

The provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei (and most recently Fujian) were the prime exporters of barite during this period. Guangdong and Shandong were exporters too but not major participants. These are all primarily agricultural areas so there existed a sufficient labor force willing to work in the mines to supplement their income from farming. During the early years, barite export pushed the existing transportation systems in these provinces to operational capacity. The mines from which this barite is extracted are located about 250 to 1,400 kilometers from the sea ports. Transportation of the ore from the mines to the ports follows a net-work that includes trucking to various rail-heads where it is then shipped via freight trains to ports for loading into seagoing vessels. in some instances, the barite travels by truck or train to the Yangtze River where it is then barged to an ocean port.

The Sheep Creek project area lies between 15 and 20 miles north of White Sulphur Springs in west central Montana, on the southern flanks of the Little Belt Mountains. The Sheep Creek project is a joint venture in which Cominco American Resources, Inc., has a 50% operating interest and BHP-Utah International, Inc., has a 50% participatory interest. The property consists of over 40,000 acres of leased fee land and lode claims. Modern exploration of the Sheep Creek area began in 1973 and 1974, when Homestake Mining Co. examined the extensive Sheep Creek gossans with soil sampling, trenching, and drilling. Cominco American Inc. began exploration in the area in 1976. Between 1978 and 1985, Anaconda Copper Co., Exxon Minerals Co., and Freeport also conducted exploration programs in the area. In 1985, Cominco completed consolidation of the district, gained BHP-Utah International, Inc., as a joint venture partner, and the joint venture drilled the first significant copper mineralization on the property. Of six bodies of copper mineralization so far located, the best defined are an upper copper zone, which includes a probable resource of 4.5 million metric tonnes grading 2.5% Cu and 0.1 % Co, and a lower copper zone which includes a possible resource of 4.5 million metric tonnes grading 4% Cu. Exploration drilling of the property is in progress.

A five-year effort by the ASTM subcommittee E10.14 on Uranium Resource Evaluation has culminated in the approval of E901-82, Classification System for Uranium Resources. The standard classification was prepared with participation of representatives from the Dept. of Energy, the Dept. of Interior's Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines, utilities, and consultants. The classification of a resource is based on level of knowledge and the economic producibility of the resource at a given time. Alpha-numeric identifiers are used rather than words to avoid confusion with existing terms, definitions, and classifications. An effort is underway to develop estimation criteria to guide users in classifying a resource according to the above format.

The various facets of university-company cooperative activities and the opportunities for collaborative research for the mineral industries are presented in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of various alternative research funding arrangements for the researcher, the university, and the sponsoring corporation are discussed. Examples of university-industry cooperative research programs are briefly outlined. The concept of a cooperative mining research program is presented. The improvement of performance through techno- logical developments and human skills may well be the greatest competitive edge available to the U.S. mining industry. In this regard, the need for new endeavors between industry and universities can hardly be overemphasized.

For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man's time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don't always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day's production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. In the Fall of 1987 The Wellmore Coal division of The United Company installed a fines separation circuit in its #20 plant near Big Rock, Va. The addition of the fines circuit included a bank of classifying cyclones and two flotation units; one a conventional 4 cell, 34 m3 Wemco cell, the other an 2.4 meter diameter by 7.6 meter tall, 28.3 m3 column flotation cell. The new fine coal separation circuit is depicted in Figure 1. The column flotation cell is manufactured by the Deister Concentrator Company, Inc., under the trade name Flotaire. The Deister Flotaire column cell utilizes a counter current flow arrangement and a different means of generating air bubbles than that of conventional mechanical flotation cells found in coal processing plants. Other features include diffusers for additional air supply and a froth washer. This cell is one of the few commercial scale column cells processing coal.

Earlier publications from The University of Alabama have indicated that column flotation performance is improved when operating at low pulp levels and when the feed is directed into the froth phase. To validate these early observations a series of tests were performed in which the position of the feed entry to the column and the pulp-froth interface were systematically varied. The optimum grade-recovery relationship was achieved with high feed entry (WA) of column height) and very low pulp levels (<10% of column height). The position of the pulp-froth interface appears to be the more critical variable. When operating in this mode (1. e. at low pulp levels) column flotation becomes. in reality. a froth separation process.

Most commercial explosives contain 70 to 94% ammonium nitrate, by weight. When portions of these explosives end up in shot rock and ore, through spillage or incomplete detonation, ammonia and nitrates leach out of them and into ground water. In recent years, State and Federal regulators have been applying more stringent water quality standards, particularly at new mines and development projects. Bulk ANFO, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, is the explosive of choice at most mines, when mining conditions allow it. ANFO use is desired because it less costly than other explosives, but when spilled it dissolves readily in water. Several case histories in the United States and Canada show a clear connection between uncontrolled losses of bulk explosives and high nitrate levels in mine effluents. Mining companies have tried several approaches to reduce ammonia and nitrate levels in groundwater. They either control explosive losses, or they treat mine effluents at the end-of-pipe. This paper addresses the former solution --controlling explosive losses. For both packaged and bulk explosives, guidelines designed to limit losses during storage, handling and use, are described in detail.

Through the early 1980&apos;s, surveying at Bingham Canyon required a great deal of repetitive and manual work. The advent of total station surveying equipment provided an opportunity to improve the speed and accuracy of surveying work while reducing manpower needs. An evaluation of total station systems and their ability to meet the surveying requirements of Bingham Canyon culminated in the purchase of a total station system as the mine re-opened in 1986. This paper presents the procedure for evaluating, implementing and using the total station survey system at Bingham Canyon.

Goldcorp is one of the largest gold producers in the world with projects in South, Central and North America. Goldcorp?s flagship operation is Peñasquito, a world-class, poly-metallic deposit that started production in 2010 which is one of the largest mines in Mexico. Since the early stages of the project, Goldcorp has used the most advanced technologies available to maximize its value. However, the implementation of optimum mine plans has been challenging to put into practice. This is due to the fact that the mine operation involves more complexity than the plans usually reflect. This challenge is an industry wide issue that presents opportunities for improvement. This technical session discusses the mine planning methodologies and procedures used to connect long, medium and short term planning strategies in order to bridge the gap and produce optimum mine plans that can be practically implemented in the field.

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company&apos;s Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold&apos;s revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada&apos;s gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple."
