The recent nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble-salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. These results also indicate that the sign of the surface charge has a significant effect on the extent of particle dispersion/aggregation. In this regard, the nature of such particle interaction forces at high ionic strengths are examined to improve our understanding of these systems. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now being used to directly measure the interaction forces responsible for the stability of these alkali halide aggregates observed in optical microscopy studies. Results from this study indicate that, while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions.

At the present time Climax Uranium Company recovers vanadium oxide from carnotite type uranium ores in the mill at Grand Junction, Colorado, The flowsheet of this mill is shown in Figure I. Vanadium is solubilized by a salt roast of the slime fraction of the ore and dissolution is accomplished by a water leach. The metal is precipitated from the pregnant liquor as sodium polyvanadate by heating to boiling and adjusting the pH to 3 with sulfuric acid. The sodium polyvanadate, commonly called, "red caken, is filtered, melted, and cast into thin flakes. This fused flaked vanadium oxide is the material which is packaged for sale. Fused vanadium oxide, marketed by Climax, contains approximately 87% V205, 7% alkali oxide, 0.08% sulfur, 0.03% phosphorus, and less than 0.5% Insoluble. This material is of a lower grade and has a higher alkali oxide content than other vanadium products offered for sale at this time. A typical analysis of a high grade vanadium oxide currently offered for sale by another company is 98% V205, 1 - 2% alkali oxide, less than 0.05% sulfur and less than 0.2% Insoluble. The only reagent consumed in the precipitation of the sodium polyvanadate is sulphuric acid. The total reagent cost is 0.58 cents per pound of vanadium oxide produced.

It is shown that dewatering of fine coal particles (D50 = 21 µm) is enhanced near the point-of-zero-charge. The coal surface is modified by the addition of copper ions and by adjusting the pH to precipitate surface-active metal hydroxy species, which promote agglomeration and produce low-moisture cakes. Filtration kinetics data are used in calculating filter cake parameters from an integrated form of Darcy's law. The influence of copper ions and pH on filter cake parameters and the correlations among them are presented.

"Nearly every input to a mine plan is based on an estimate. The estimates may be from sample data, historical information, models, or personal opinion, but in all cases, these values are simply expected values (means). In real life, we do not get to iterate the exact conditions at our mining operation many times to ensure that that average value is attained. The expected value also tells us nothing about the spread of values that that input might take on. The result is a significant amount of unquantified uncertainty in our mine plans. Unfortunately, it is often too expensive or time consuming to update planning processes and software. This paper presents a proof of concept spreadsheet scheduling tool that can be utilized to incorporate many geologic realizations (simulated models) into the mine scheduling process. While this POC is not intended to be a detailed model of uncertainty, it is to show that there are stepping stones available for mine planners to begin to embrace uncertainty and produce more achievable plans without requiring a significant change in their planning process. INTRODUCTION Mining companies have included quantifying uncertainty, or at least risk, as a requirement of project justification for many years, however many times this process lags behind the traditional mine planning process and the results are rarely used to improve the plan. Nearly every parameter used in a mine plan is an estimate and the mine planning engineer should recognize and even embrace the inherent uncertainty in those parameters and its effect on their forecast results. While many of the uncertainties are beyond the scope of the traditional mine plan (e.g. global market uncertainty, socio-political uncertainty, environmental uncertainty), some uncertainties can, and should, be included in the mine planning process. Many mining engineers have incorporated techniques such as Monte Carlo Simulation or Discrete Element Simulation to understand the range of productivity that can be expected for an operation but most still rely upon one estimated model for what is likely the critical component of technical uncertainty, the geologic resource. Modern geostatistical methods can provide multiple ore body realizations to provide a thorough unbiased “picture” of the geologic uncertainty but most traditional mine planning techniques are not formulated to allow for multiple (100-200) realizations of each material quality/grade parameter. Commercial software companies and research groups are progressing with development of tools that can incorporate geologic uncertainty, and even optimize extraction plans in the uncertain environment. Unfortunately, this author believes that a significant number of mining operations will not be able to adopt these techniques due to the computational requirements of the advanced techniques and the costs associated with implementing proprietary software. In an attempt to encourage mining engineers to embrace the inherent uncertainty in their mine plans, this paper presents a cost-effective alternative that can be developed in-house, at any mine, to schedule mid to long-term mine plans while continuously monitoring the uncertainty in the results. The author hopes that by demonstrating the usefulness of such a system that mining companies will encourage engineers, geologists, and geostatisticians to find ways to incorporate this powerful data into their processes and procedures."

We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

The west central Upper Peninsula of Michigan contains a large resource of graphitic slate. The slate has potential industrial use as a substitute for shale currently used in the production of portland cement. Some of the unweathered slate, however, has a high concentration of pyritic sulfur that can create emission problems when processed in a kiln. A low-cost method to reduce the sulfur content of the slate through the optimization of pyrite oxidation in a bio-heap leaching operation was investigated. In this study, optimal conditions for the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were created to promote pyrite oxidation and, therefore, sulfur removal from the slate. Preliminary lab scale flask tests using crushed and sized slate (-40 + 100 mesh) and T. ferrooxidans bacteria in a sulfuric acid medium resulted in 70% oxidation of pyrite over a one-month period. Subsequent column leaching tests on coarser materials (-3/8+1/4 in.) operated for six months resulted in a maximum reduction of total sum of 75%. These data suggest that bio-heap leaching to remove sulfur from the slate for use as a kiln feed material is viable.

Mining on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administered lands is affected by Federal laws and regulations requiring the mining industry to plan for the environmental consequences of surface disturbance. Regardless of the requirements for obtaining a claim, permit, lease or contract to mine, a notice or a mining and reclamation plan will be submitted and an acceptable environmental document must be prepared prior to mining. A bond may be required based on the results of the environmental evaluation, public interest and the operator's past history of compliance. In several areas, Federal requirements are different from California's requirements under their Surface Mine and Reclamation Act (SMARA). Therefore, the BLM is negotiating with the State in order to work out problem areas of responsibility and duplication of effort.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the stability of the mass flow rates and average pellet size in the different streams of an industrial-scale balling circuit. The variables in this study include water content, drum speed and fresh feed rate. It was found that both the mass flow rates and pellet diameter are greatly disturbed when a change, positive or negative, in any of the variables takes place. For most of these disturbances to be damped don, a period of one hour or so is required. When a disturbance in the feed rate was made, the transient period extended to more than one and half hours (the duration of the experiment). It was observed that there is an interaction between the drum speed and moisture needed for producing an acceptable green ball product. The moisture content of the product pellets was found to be a function of the pellet size, with the larger pellets retaining a higher moisture content.

Evidence of the fact that the beneficiation of sand and gravel is now going on is readily observed by visiting various and and gravel plants almost throughout the U.S.A. of necessity this beneficiation process is concentrated more in certain areas than in others, and it is steadily increasing. Therefore, it can be said that beneficiation is now one of the processes inn the manufacturing of sand and gravel, It started some ten to twelve, years ago when the need for beneficiation made itself known, and when the manufacturers of sand and gravel producing machinery began to make equipment available to the industry.

The Paupers Dream Property is located in the northern Boulder Mountains, southwestern Montana, 30 km southwest of Helena. The property is situated in the central portion of the Butte-Helena gold belt, a NE trending lineament marking a zone of recurrent, late-Cretaceous to mid-Tertiary volcanic activity. Geology consists of a plutonic basement of late-Cretaceous quartz monzonite overlain by a pre-volcanic basal conglomerate and a complex sequence of Oligocene rhyolitic volcanics. Gold mineralization occurs in fracture-controlled quartz veins, silicified stockwork, and brecciated shear zones as auriferous pyrite, arsenopyrite, and disseminated free gold. An estimated 60,000 tonnes averaging 2.5 g/t was produced from the Porphyry Dike, Venus, and Paupers Dream Mines on the property. Current drill indicated reserves (May, 19861 are placed at 6,946,000 tonnes averaging 1.45 g/t gold.

"The US coal mining industry has suffered a recent decline in profits caused by a combination of decline in commodity demand and more restrictive government regulation, forcing coal mining companies to cease production in numerous mines. A 40% decrease in the total number of coal mines occurred from 1994 to 2000. The number of mines remained relatively constant until 2008 when a change of government sparked a series of new environmental regulations which have contributed to another 15% decrease from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, production has only decreased by 3%, increasing from 1994 to 2008, and then decreasing since 2008. However, this value is skewed by large increases in sub-bituminous coal production and decreases in other coal ranks. Several aspects assist in executive decisions on mine longevity and economic worth. Studies of open source mine data collected by mandated government surveys coupled with commodity history can be used to find relationships between mine closures and these elements, which include statistics on production tonnage, seam height, coal rank, etc. This paper looks at coal mining trends since 1994 by comparing mine, market, and regulation factors that may influence mine closure. INTRODUCTION The US coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history, and regulatory impact. TRENDS SINCE 1994 Each year, US coal mines are required to submit data on a wide variety of categories to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data includes administrative records, production values, and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the following figures."

Reaction kinetics for gold dissolution in acid thiourea solutions were investigated using formamidine disulfide as an oxidant. For the conditions studied it appears that a surface reaction limits the rate of gold dissolution. The rate was found to be first order with respect to thiourea concentration and half order with respect to the concentration of formamidine disulfide; the apparent activation energy for the reaction was 10.40 kcal/mol (43.40 kJ/mol); and the reaction rate was independent of pH for the pH range 1.0 to 3.0.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), located in Tucson, AZ, will hold its 16th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet Saturday, Dec. 5,1998. The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by selected individuals and industry partners. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two mining history honorees are chosen by the , Hall of Fame Committee and the Board of Governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual, technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. In 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker will be Charles G. Preble, president and chief executive officer of Southern Peru Copper Corp. He is being recognized for outstanding performance as an executive of an American company operating under difficult circumstances in a foreign country. The Hall of Fame will induct H. Myles Jacob, former chairman and CEO of Inspiration Copper Co., for innovation and farsightedness in matters pivotal to the cop- per industry of his time. In addition, John Cromwell Lincoln, former president and chairman of Bagdad Mining Co., will be inducted for his outstanding contributions to the American mining industry. These contributions include metallurgical research and development of the Bagdad Mine as well as pioneering innovation in the electrical industry. Medals of Merit will be awarded to David N. Skillings, editor and publisher of Skillings Mining Re- view, for his dedication and support of mining interests. J. Ruben Velasco Rodriguez will also receive a Medal of Merit. He is economic geologist, professor and former secretary of the board of directors and secretary general of Compania Minera de Cananea. His medal is for fostering excellent relations between Mexico and the , United States in mining geology and management and for advancing the professional development of others in the field of earth science. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to Stephen Bechtel and the Bechtel Corp. in recognition of Bechtel's 100th anniversary and the company's outstanding service to the mining industry. A variety of standards comprising a multitude of indicators often require similar information but with different data quality, level of detail and coverage. This may lead to inconsistencies in external communication because of the difficulties in collection and aggregation of data from different company sites and organisational levels. Using a central database system accessible via internet makes the process of data management more efficient: All relevant information can be collected on-site, with a defined data quality, credibility and consistency. "This study aimed to determine the optimum operating parameters of a continuous bioleaching system to leach arsenic (As) from mine tailings using a mixed mesophilic bacterial culture. The microbial consortium, previously adapted for effective growth at high pulp density and metal concentrations, was mainly composed of Leptospirillum ferriphilum, and Acidithiobacillus caldus. The mine tailings, collected from the Janggun mine (South Korea) contained 11% (w/w) of As. The tests were performed in a laboratory-scale unit composed of three reactors connected in series following a cascade configuration. Agitation speed, air supply, solid concentration, residence time and temperature were systematically optimized by assessing the leaching activity. Several parameters were monitored on a daily basis, including the As released into solution, iron oxidation rates, pH, cell concentration, dissolved oxygen and redox potential. Overall, improvement of oxygen transfer, by optimizing the agitation speed and air supply, presented the most tangible impact on the leaching performance. The highest As leaching efficiency observed in this study was 82%, which supports the feasibility of the process. INTRODUCTION Worldwide, around of 65 billion tons of mine tailings are produced every year (Jones & Boger, 2012). These materials comprise the waste minerals produced after ore beneficiation. Mine tailings usually contain heavy metals (e.g., Cobalt (Co), Lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn) and Arsenic (As) (Falagán, Grail, & Johnson, 2016; Nguyen, Lee, Park, & Lee, 2014). The exposure of these materials to the environment can produce serious health damage and environmental degradation (Martin, Dowling, Pearce, Sillitoe, & Florentine, 2014). Mine tailings management represents a major issue in South Korea. There are more than 1,000 abandoned mines containing stockpiled mine tailings within the territory (Choi, Park, Hong, Park, & Kim, 2013; Kim, Kim, Ahn, Ko, & Lee, 2005; Lee, Lee, & Kim, 1998). These tailings comprise high concentration of arsenic. Therefore, the Korean Government has directed its efforts to developing eco-friendly technologies, for the arsenic detoxification of mine tailings Continuous bioleaching is explored as a remediation technology (Borja et al., 2016). The present study aimed to develop a mixed mesophilic bacterial culture for optimal growth at high metal and solid concentration; and optimize the operating conditions of a continuous bioleaching unit. This investigation forms part of a larger study aimed to develop a bioleaching technique to treat Janggun mine tailings (Borja et al., 2017; Ngoma et al., 2017)."

"In order to conserve the coal resources, many coal mines which have been mined begin to re-mine. Re-mining face is of complicated circumstances and coal spontaneous combustion is unknown, so experiments are designed to study the characteristics of multiple oxidized coal samples. The investigation into the oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. The non-caking coal is collected as coal samples. The raw coal sample with initial oxidation and the sample after second oxidation and third oxidation are obtained after a certain treatment of the coal. The temperature-programmed system, and proximate and ultimate analysis are adopted to compare the releases of gaseous products of spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of the multiple oxidized coal sample. With the increase of oxidation times, experimental results indicate that the oxygen consumption rate, the release rate of carbon monoxide and the intensity of heat release are significantly decrease. The characteristic temperature dropped and the size of the pores in coal is smaller as well. INTRODUCTION China accounts for 13% of global coal resources [1-2]. In recent years, more and more coal mines begin to re-mine in order to conserve resources. This production mode is to mine coal pillar left by last exploitation or unavailable for mining. In the process of slicing mining for coal seam groups or thick coal seams, the second or multiple oxidation due to the mining-induced effect, may take place in the goaf of the lower seam. So the spontaneous combustion is prone to occur in this area. The study on oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. Scholars [3-7] have discussed the workability of re-mining for coal mines, verify the feasibility of the existing mining technology for re-mining area, and set up the prevention measures of coal spontaneous combustion. But all these measures are only based on on-site observation data, instead of experiment on spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of re-mining coal samples which have a great importance for early prediction and forecast. The authors aim at investigating the multiple-oxidated coal spontaneous combustion law, and perfecting the coal spontaneous combustion mechanism to provide a basis for the prediction and forecast."

"SJVN Limited successfully commissioned its Rampur HEP (412 MW) in 2014. The project has been planned to operate in tandem by directly utilizing the Tail Water of SJVN’s prestigious Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station 1500 MW located upstream. The initial filling of voluminous water conductor system of RHEP with 10.50 m diameter, 15 Kilometer long Head Race Tunnel, involved more than 1.5 million m3 of water. The filling operation of such a large diameter tunnel constructed in young folded Himalayas which always offer less ideal sites for tunnelling and their subsequent operations under pressurized conditions is worth sharing with tunnelling fraternity. The paper covers meticulous planning, execution, precautions taken, and performance monitoring during filling process keeping in view the fragile geology, low rock cover zones, shear zones in close vicinity of thickly inhabited areas, squeezing zones, hot water zones encountered during excavation.1.0 RAMPUR HYDRO POWER STATION IN BRIEFRampur Hydroelectric Project (412 MW), is located in Himachal Pradesh (India). This project is a downstream development of Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (1500 MW) constructed on river Satluj and commissioned during 2003. Both the projects today are now successfully working in tandem. The upstream NJHPS has been constructed on the left bank of the river while the downstream Rampur HPS is located on right bank of the river (Figure-1).The major length of HRT of Rampur project lies on right bank of river before it crosses under the river in its initial reach (Figure-2). The main features of the project are as below:• 10.50 m diameter 15 km long HRT ending in a 155.75 m deep, 38.00 m diameter surge shaft.• 3 steel lined pressure shafts, 5.4 m dia, 211-220m long.• Surface valve house 69 m long x 10.50 m wide x 23 m high housing 3 No. butterfly valves• 3 No. surface penstocks 5.4m dia 368-382m long, bifurcating into six penstocks, each of 3.80 mdia. to feed six generating units of surface power house 158 m long x 24.50 m wide x 48 m high, with Francis turbines each of 68.67 MW capacity."
