Perlite is rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 percent by weight (wt.%) bound water held within the silicic-glass structure. It is often distinguished by vitreous, pearly luster and concentric perlitic fractures ("onionskin"). Occurrences worldwide are associated with Tertiary to middle Quaternary volcanic rocks. Perlite is in silicic domes, plugs, laccoliths, flows, vitric tephra, chill margins of dikes and sills, and welded ash-flow tuffs. It is a hydrated volcanic glass formed through secondary alteration of obsidian by the incorporation of water into the glass/silica structure. Post-emplacement hydration (weathering) of cooled glasses by meteoric water is the principal alteration process, but some hydration by magmatic or meteoric water during or shortly after emplacement, or hydration by water exsolved during cooling may occur. Commercial "perlite" is any volcanic glass that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam and thus forming a lightweight, frothy material. The expansion temperature typically ranges from 1,100 to 1,500°F. An expanded volume increase of 10 to 40 times the original volume yields expanded densities of 1.5 to 11 pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft3). Perlite is mined by eight companies at 10 operations in six western states. New Mexico accounts for more than 80% of the total tonnage mined. The rest comes from Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Nevada. In 1992, domestic production was 571,000 short tons (st), domestic apparent consumption was 591,000 st, and the value of crude perlite was $15.3 million. In 1991, with about the same production and price of crude perlite, the gross value for expanded perlite was $101.7 million. Perlite exports in 1992, primarily to Canada, are estimated an 30,000 st; and imports, from Greece, are an estimated 50,000 st. In 1992, 70 plants in 33 states expanded crude perlite. Construction uses of expanded perlite accounted for 66% of total domestic sales. Expanded perlite used as filter aid accounted for 15%. All other markets, including use as a filler and in agriculture, accounted for 19%. Leading states for expanding perlite, ranked by order of sales, were Mississippi, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and Georgia. Domestic perlite encounters transportation disadvantages in some areas of the eastern United States compared to perlite imported from Greece. However, western U.S. perlite exports to Canada offset this in large part, and net import reliance for perlite is about 3% of domestic consumption. Perlite grab samples were tested at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Minerals Resources (NMBMMR) for their basic suitability in horticulture, construction, filter aids, and fillers/extenders using Perlite Institute techniques modified by the NMBMMR. Most commercial perlite ranged from 2.5 to 3.0 wt.% bound water for all major types (classical, granular, and pumiceous). Expanded density varied widely, but the lowest density of 1.9 lbs/ft3 was for granular. Average brightness of expanded perlite was 47.6 to 69.3%. Nonexpansibles, commonly obsidian or "dead" perlite, ranged from 18 wt.% to less than 1 wt.%, with granular perlte generally the lowest. Compacted density was not related to either perlite type or nonexpansibles present. Sieve analyses of the -50+100 mesh product showed that, in general, pumiceous perlite produces more fines and classical and granular perlite average 60 to 80% -30+100 mesh after expansion. Samples were tested for crystalline silica that ranged from below the detection limit of 0.5 wt.% to nearly 0.2 wt.%, but most tested below 0.5 wt.%. Although quartz content can be lowered in the expanded product by the expansion process, producers can further lower crystalline silica in the product by mixing low-quartz crude with high-quartz perlite before expansion. Chemical analysis by x-ray fluorescence confirms the rhyolitic composition of perlite, but indicates that surface weathering may increase the concentration of some elements, such as potassium and calcium, by infilling cracks or fissures developed during or after perlite emplacement.

The molecular form of aliphatic amines precipitates in alkaline solutions when the amine solubility limit is exceeded and forms a typical colloidal system. The zones of mines precipitation and micellization are defined and it is shown that the appearance of a colloidal system in a certain pH range is a unique feature that makes weak electrolyte type surfactants differ from strong electrolytes. The formation of iono-molecular complexes reported in the literature is shown to be a pre-precipitation phenomenon. The zeta potential - pH curves for minerals and bubbles in the presence of amines in the pH range where the amine forms a colloidal precipitate are entirely determined by the precipitate. The pH dependence of the flotation of certain minerals using amines is discussed in the light of these findings.

Introduction Though temporarily shutdown due to the depressed economy, the Henderson mine is a large underground molybdenite producer, using a continuous panel-caving mining system. The location of the ore body requires access from the surface through three shafts, the collars of which are located about 3.15 km (10,350 ft) above sea level. At this altitude, normal temperatures are such that heat must be added to intake-ventilation air for about half of each year. This prevents ice from building up in the intake shafts, waterlines from freezing underground, employee discomfort, and equipment-related problems such as pneumatic rock drill icing and cold starting of diesel engines. Because of topographic and environmental constraints, the Henderson mill and concentrator are located 24 km (15 miles) from the mine, on the west side of the Continental Divide. All ore from the mine is transported to the mill by an electrified rail haulage system, with 15.4 km (9.6 miles) of the trip being underground through a double-track tunnel. A shaft at the midpoint of the tunnel exhausts air drawn from the mine and from the portal that is at an elevation of 2.7 km (8,950 ft). Intake air at the portal must be heated for part of the year to prevent ice buildup. Mine Ventilation System The mine ventilation system uses three sources of fresh air and two exhausts. The primary freshair intake is No. 3 shaft. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 698 m (2,291 ft). An airflow of 755 m3/s (1.6 mil¬lion cfm) is supplied to this shaft by two vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) fans on the surface. The air is distributed within the mine by means of fresh-air distribution levels connected to production and development levels by raises. A secondary source of fresh air to the mine is provided by No. 2 shaft, the primary man and material access. This shaft is concrete lined to a diameter of 8.5 m (28 ft) for a total depth of 946 m (3,105 ft). Downcast airflow is induced by a pressure differential produced by the fans in the system such that net intake and exhaust volumes are equal. The No. 2 shaft flow of 165 m3/s (350,000 cfm) enters the mine network from the production and haulage levels. Exhaust air is moved from the various working levels through connecting raises to exhaust col¬lection levels that return it to No. 1 shaft. No. 1 shaft is the primary mine exhaust. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 788 m (2,584 ft). Three vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) exhaust fans are located at the collar of No. 1 shaft, producing a flow of 850 m3/s (1.8 million cfm). In addition, an airflow of 71 m3/s (150,000 cfm) from the intake distribution level is exhausted via the haulage tunnel, by means of No. 4 shaft located midway in the tunnel. The main features of the mine ventilation network are summarized in Fig. 1. The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.

The European Commission published its Communication of the Thematic Strategy on the sustainable use of natural resources ("Resource Strategy") on 21 December 2005. The Resource Strategy aims at reducing environmental impacts associated with resource use - called decoupling - in a growing European economy and worldwide. The impacts of unsustainable resource use include e.g. climate change due to fossil fuel use, land use and environmental degradation due to mineral extraction and processing, or overexploitation of soil and fish stocks. To decouple environmental impacts from economic growth, a life-cycle approach is adopted. It means that the environmental impacts are taking into account at each stage of the life cycle of a resource, avoiding that negative impacts are shifted to other environmental media, to other stages of the life cycle, or to other countries. Key to achieving decoupling are three factors: - More value - creating more value while using fewer resources (?resource productivity?); - Less impact - reducing overall environmental impact per unit of resources used (through ?cleaner? technologies and consumption pat-terns); - Better alternatives - substituting currently used resources with better alternatives. The paper focuses on the implementation actions of the Resource Strategy in particular related to the minerals industry: 1. The Data Centre on natural resources; 2. Indicators to measure progress; 3. The involvement of economic sectors to take concrete actions; 4. EU Member States involvement, focusing on resource uses with the most significant impacts; 5. The International Panel on the sustainable use of natural resources, set up together with UNEP. With its 25 years time horizon and its wide approach the Resource Strategy will have a co-ordinating function to ensure enhanced coherence and efficiency. The challenge will be to integrate this approach into all policies and decision-making.

Strictly defined, a stull is an inclined or horizontal timber support; a vertically placed timber is defined as a prop. Common usage allows the catchall term "stull" to refer to all such uniaxial mine support, regardless of orientation. Typically a stull is a round wooden column that is wedged in place to provide short-term auxiliary support between sill and back, or between hanging wall and footwall. Stulls may be used exclusively or in con- junction with other support systems such as roof bolts, shotcrete, or cribbing. Stulls are used both as local temporary support in stoping operations and for uniform systematic support installations. Where stoping areas are to be abandoned soon after excavation, stulls may be used to provide temporary support during mining operations. Where controlled caving and subsidence is required, stull supports are designed to fail in a systematic, predictable manner. Wood type is selected on the basis of availability, price, and load carrying characteristics. Coniferous woods are typically used, especially to carry heavy ground loads. Brittle woods are generally avoided because of their tendency to fail suddenly. Gradual yielding failure is preferable to sudden, unexpected failure of the support. Some usage of wood from deciduous trees such as cottonwood and other poplars has been reported in Grants, NM. These stulls reportedly mushroomed as the ground load increased but continued to maintain their structural integrity. Stulls fabricated from structural steel are used in special applications. Adjustable lengths are commercially available in mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic designs. The high cost of mechanical stulls limits their use to mining systems where recovery and reuse is possible. End blocking, also called headboards or footboards, uses wood blocks that are placed between the stull end and the ground they are supporting. The blocks are typically 50.8 to 101.6 mm (2 to 4 in.) thick, 203.2 to 304.8 mm (8 to 12 in.) wide, and 381 to 609.6 mm (15 to 24 in.) long. End blocking serves to distribute the support over wider back area. Compression of the end blocking gives visual indication of wall movement prior to failure of the stull. A common application of the stull is in flat-bedded uranium mining during pillar extraction. Many western US uranium mines use a pillar pattern development to delineate the irregular ore pods. After development of an appropriate sized pillar, the ore pillars are then sequentially mined out, leaving the undercut hanging wall or back to cave. Where thickness of the ore is less than 4.3 m (14 ft), stulls are generally used to provide ground control as the pillar is removed in slices. Experience dictates the density of stull placement. In general, the number and size of stulls should be sufficient to resist ground closure and to provide support for drilling and loading operations adjacent to the pillar. Stulls next to the mining face are often lagged 0.9 to 1.2 m (3 or 4 ft) up from the floor (or sill) to confine the blasted ore to a passage next to the pillar. Mucking is simplified by this confinement. Experience dictates whether back control along a mining face requires removal of stulls to allow con- trolled subsidence of the back or hanging wall. Without caving or closure, abutment pressure can create poor ground conditions near the pillar.

I cannot help but be reminded, as I stand here today, of my boyhood years and heritage, both of which are inextricably tied to this very valley and are, in a: bay, apropos of the theme of this Keynote Session. I remember the scarcity of people. For example, 48, 000 in Phoenix and 436, 000 in the State in 1930 and 65,000 in Phoenix and 499, 000 in the State in 1940. Today Phoenix boasts a population of over 500, 000 and the State a population of 1, 500,000. I remember the' lack of facilities, goods and services, including gas and electric power. I recall stories of my grandfather who had the freighting or teaming contract to haul all the supplies and generating equipment, by wagon mind you, up the old Apache Trail to Roosevelt Dam. . .a three day trip from the nearest railhead which, by the way, was not Phoenix, for it did not merit a railhead on those days, but the village of Maricopa approximately 25 miles south of Phoenix. I remember chopping firewood, heating wash water on an open fire in a No. 3 wash tub at the rear of the house and doing my school homework by the light of a kerosene lamp just 25 to 35 years ago within what is now a large metropolitan area

The ‘Westerschelde Tunnel’ underpasses the estuary of the Schelde in the Netherlands. The tunnel will consist of two tubes which are driven by two hydroshields (slurry shields). The tunnels will each have a length of approx. 6.6km and a bore-diameter of 11.33 m. Demanding ground conditions had to be considered during the design of the shield machines. Loose sands, extensive clay formations and high ground water pressures of up to 6.5 bar will be encountered during the tunnel drive. The tunnelling activities will start in the middle of 1999 and are scheduled to end by the end of 2001.

Introduction Pegasus Gold's Montana Tunnels mine is a large surface gold, silver, lead, and zinc mine located 37 km (23 miles) south of Helena in southwestern Montana. Milling operations commenced in late March 1987. The concentrator achieved full production in May that year after undergo¬ing several modifications and improvements. Production for 1988 is projected to be 2.48 t ,80,000 oz) of gold, 34.2 t (1.1 million oz) of silver, along with 8.5 kt (9400 st) of lead, and 22.6 kt (25,000 st) of zinc from lead and zinc concentrates. Mill throughput currently averages 11.7 kt/d (12,900 stpd), compared to the origi¬nally designed capacity of 11.3 kt/d (12,500 stpd). Cash production costs, net of bypro¬duct revenues for the third quarter 1988, were below $3.20/g ($100 per oz). The introduction of ore to the concen¬trator marked the culmination of 12 years ex¬ploration, evaluation, and development. Initial milling operations encountered diffi¬culties with the circuit as designed. As a result, several modifications and improve¬ments were made to the plant. This article is intended to assist other companies developing projects of this type and complexity. It discusses the mine's de¬velopment from feasibility and construction through start-up. The operation, as it exists today, is reviewed including the modifica¬tions and improvements made since start-up. History The mine is situated in Jefferson County, MT within the historic Corbin-Wickes min¬ing district. Underground mining began in 1864 and flourished until the early 1900s. Between 1864 and 1900 the vein deposits in the district produced about $41 million dol¬lars worth of lead and silver ores containing subordinate amounts of zinc, copper, and gold. At various times, three smelters were operated in the area.

Gold heap leach operations often process low grade ores with little margin for cost increases. The advantage of heap leach operations is the considerable savings in both capital and operating costs. This paper looks at an alternative pH modifier to lime in the heap leach process, namely bauxite waste mud or red mud. The red mud can contain trace amounts of gold and was found to be an excellent source of slow release sodium hydroxide for long-term pH modification. Column cyanide leaches showed that 25 kgt-1 of red mud provided a higher pH and longer pH modification than 0.25 kgt-1 of lime. Contaminants leached from the red mud hampered the adsorption of the aurocyanide complex onto activated carbon.

In 1996 a KBR (Brown and Root) led international JV was appointed to design and supervise an underground and surface package. The design of 6 km of tunnels, plus enlargements, deep shafts in glacial and sandstone deposits for the conversion of the existing LEP underground laboratory at CERN, Geneva adjacent to the Jura Mountains/Lake Geneva had to be undertaken in an operational environment and in conjunction with other underground constructions associated with the US$3bn refurbishment.

Vertical hoisting of materials using hoists and skips is common in the Mining Industry. These systems have a number of drawbacks, one being limited hoisting capacity at medium depths. FKC-Lake Shore and Metso Flexowell have been developing and installing vertical belts for medium depth shaft applications for many years, progressively going deeper whilst increasing belt capacity. The latest development from Metso the Pocketlift® belt advances this technology allowing higher tonnages to be lifted from greater depths. The design, manufacture, installation and operational experience of a 1818 tonnes capacity, 273 meters vertical lift Pocketlift® system at the White County Coal Pattiki 2 mine is the subject of this work.

The existence of resins in some coal deposits in various parts of the world has been known for many years. These resins vary considerably in chemical structure and properties. The resin that is found in Utah coal, however, is rather unique, and has properties particularly attractive for the manufacture of printing ink mastics and adhesives. This resin is a rather dark, very high melting point, low molecular weight hydrocarbon resin. Its typical properties are shown in Table I. Its largest use by far, has been in the printing ink industry. The history of Utah coal resin is interesting, but unfortunately one of disappointment and failure.

Sanitary landfilling has become one of the most widely used methods of disposing of solid refuse. A principal concern of regulatory agencies and the public itself is that landfill operations do not degrade the physical environment, including water resources, and the ground-water reservoir in particular. Ground-water and engineering geology can guide landfill operations into suitable terranes or develop measures to compensate for any natural limitations at a particular site Experience and research in Illinois suggest four activities relating to landfill disposal that warrant attention by geologists and engineers: (1) Regional delineation of favorable and unfavorable hydrogeologic conditions to facilitate planning and preliminary screening of potential landfill sites. (2) Site evaluations, with considerations of geologic materials, topography, water levels, flow systems, and local occurrence and use of water resources. (3) Re- search on aspects of the hydrogeologic environment that control effects of, or are modified by, landfills. (4) Formulation of practices in the siting, construction, and operation of landfills that prevent, mitigate, or isolate deleterious effects. The first two activities are basically in the domain of earth science, requiring the application of fundamental concepts of geology and hydrology and conventional site-exploration methods. The third activity, research, requires contributions from geology as well as other disciplines, including soil physics, sanitary engineering, and chemistry. The fourth calls for policy decisions by regulatory agencies and elected officials, using the contributions of scientists and engineers.

INTRODUCTION This presentation will address changing trade patterns in lead and zinc from the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. Lead and zinc deposits are developed where they are found in many parts of the world. As many are not in major consuming areas, there is significant international trade in both lead and zinc concentrates and in refined metal. Forecasts of mine production have been analyzed, primary and secondary refining capacity and future consumption levels have been estimated, to arrive at the changes in trade patterns expected during the next half decade. This paper will first address concentrate and metal trade patterns for lead, then for zinc, and finally some remarks will be made on captive mine/smelter agreements, on regional trade agreements, and on barriers to trade. I would like to note that. there is only a small international trade in semi-fabricated products such as zinc die-cast alloy, zinc oxide, lead oxide or rolled lead and zinc. Most of the world's zinc and lead trade is in concentrates or refined metal. LEAD TRADE PATTERNS Lead Concentrates Six countries are exporters of lead concentrates. Three countries are in the Americas - Canada, Mexico and Peru, with two in Africa - Morocco and South Africa (including Namibia), and Australia. Due to the limited growth in lead consumption and consequent minimum investment in new production facilities expected, mine and metal production levels and future consumption levels are not forecast to change much between now and 1990. Accordingly, the tonnage of lead concentrates exported will remain essentially unchanged from these six countries. In total they have exports of 480,000 metric tonnes (metal content)* and by 1990 this figure is forecast to rise only slightly with the only increase taking place in Mexico. The concentrates are exported mainly to Western Europe & Japan. Apart from these six main lead concentrate exporting nations, a significant change is expected in the United States. This paper focuses on maintenance of underground salt air curative quality using environmental friendly solutions. Possible ways to preserve its curative properties, in relation with the admissible salt air quality parameters, are analyzed. In situ investigations regarding microbiological impregnation in walls and the air inside the Romanian salt sanatorium were initiated. The results of a pilot project, which is in progress at Praid salt mine, are presented. After the end of the investigation at this site, investigations will continue in other Romanian salt mines, such as Slanic Prahova, Targu Ocna and Cacica.

"This paper discusses how an existing grey cast iron segmental tunnel lining responds to construction of a new SCL tunnel transversely beneath with zero clearance; how the damage assessment for the existing tunnel was conducted for impact of longitudinal movement; how the tunnel is subsequently instrumented to observe both movement and stress manifestation at its longitudinal connections and how the results from the instruments compare with the prediction. An assessment of neutral axis of the tunnel in longitudinal flexure is also explored using interpolated horizontal displacement data from a conventional monitoring system. INTRODUCTION The Royal Mail Tunnel (RMT) (formely Post Office Tunnel or ‘Mailrail’) was constructed using semi-mechanised deep level construction techniques from 1914 and 1917 (Lee 1938). Commencing full commercial operation in 1926, the system was until 2003; conveying parcels the 6.5 miles between seven sorting offices in the center of London, and linking the system with main line rail stations, Paddington and Liverpool Street (The British Postal Museum & Archive 2013). A single tunnel of 2.74m internal diameter facilitated a bi-directional twin narrow-gauge (~611mm gauge) railway road system for electric driverless operation. The tunnel lining is segmental grey cast iron (grade 10) made up of six flanged segments and a smaller flanged key segment; constructed into a ring of width 508mm The external diameter of the tunnel is 2.971m. For further details of the tunnel lining and material properties are outlined by (Devriendt & Alhaddad 2014).London Underground Bond Street Station is a major station of the London Underground system in the very center of London; in its vicinity, the RMT runs west-east perpendicularly above the north south Jubilee Line tunnels. Historic survey record of the Jubilee Line’s (the then Fleet Line) construction in 1974 and its impact on the RMT case is documented in (Crossrail 1993): it is one of only a hand full of case-studies frequently cited when assessing the impact of new construction scenarios of this type; not least including the assessment of the same tunnel, at the same site some 40 years later, and the subject material for this paper: It noted significant vertical displacement of ~90mm to the RMT without noticeable serviceability or operational impediment."

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD), is continuing its High-Energy High-Displacement (HEHD) testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement, and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link fence, welded-wire mesh, and combinations of these products. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can be used by the practicing engineer to evaluate installed support based on visual observation of cracking and deformation. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is continuing research on the behavior of shotcrete when used as the surface support component in mining ground support systems. Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often used to accomplish this (see Figure 1). Maintaining support pressure during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to ensuring miner safety. However, the toughness of a ground support system–the ability to maintain strength over large deformations–is difficult to quantify. Researchers at SMRD have responded to this deficiency by designing a full-scale test device, described previously by Martin et al. [2015a], and beginning a testing program to assess the behavior of shotcrete surface support reinforced with a variety of products including: fibers, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh, spray-on polyurea liners, and combinations of these products. This paper discusses design and construction aspects of the tunnel, shaft and station for the Weehawken Tunnel and Bergen line Avenue Station. The project consists of a 1,269 m (4,156 ft) long existing railroad tunnel, which will be enlarged and equipped with a two-track light rail system. The project also includes construction of a deep underground station, with a large shaft connecting the surface station to the below ground station for access and ventilation purposes. Vibration and noise from blasting is a critical community issue and blasting adjacent to two 230-kV duct banks located in the tunnel invert required special blasting procedures.
