This investigation (Bowles, 1990) involves consideration of technology utilized by three separate fields of metallurgy and materials science: 1) The recovery of metals employing the use of solvent extraction, 2) The fabrication of materials using powder metallurgy, and 3) The use of composite materials in fabrication of engineering materials. The research considers each of the processes in order to realize the benefits of each. In light of the fact that materials have an intended use -it does seem plausible to simplify the process required between "mother earth" and final use. For instance, a primary copper producer that already employs a solvent extraction and electrowinning process could produce value added products directly. Part of the existing extractant flow could be diverted into a pressurized hydrogen stripping process in order to produce specialty composite powders. Innumerable methods have been employed for the recovery of metals; solvent extraction, the one considered in this study, was used due to the possibility of it providing a pure powdered metal. The use of solvent extraction in the recovery of metals has gained wide acceptance and its use proves beneficial in many applications (Ritchey and Ashbrook, 1984). Pressure hydrogen stripping of solvent extractants may provide the benefit of flowsheet simplification compared to conventional solvent extraction followed by electrowinning. It may also provide the benefit of direct production of high purity metal powder (Demopoulos and Distin, 1985).

The evolution of open-pit mining has been rapid during the last two decades. The development of larger, more productive and efficient equipment has been one of the key factors in this open-pit advancement. Selection of the proper equipment and its correct usage is paramount to successful operation while maximizing return on investment. The quantity of material being moved prior to mining the saleable product is increasing at a significant rate. For example, at a southwestern copper mine more than two hundred million tons of over- burden have been removed prior to exposing an ore which contains less than 1% copper. A recent survey of twenty-three Western Hemisphere copper mines reveals the average strippingratio was 2.2:l with a range of 0.9-8.5:l. In the face of increased mineral demand, the resulting technological developments and rising overburden to ore ratios, many open-pit mines now use totally different concepts for the removal of ore and overburden. An increasing number of these concepts now being installed include wheel tractor scrapers as a major part of the material handling system for unconsolidated overburden removal. To say scrapers move only unconsolidated overburden is incorrect. On the contrary, ripped phosphate rock, copper ore, iron ore, and moderately consolidated overburden are also being moved by scrapers in various areas of the world. As reported in the Minerals Year- book, however, about one-half of the material moved in metal and non-metal mines is never drilled and blasted or broken by other means. We will, therefore, in this paper, concentrate on the role of wheel tractor scrapers in unconsolidated overburden; the area of greatest usage.

The effects of pH, pH modifier (lime or caustic soda) and cyanide on the pulp rheology of a number of ore types ranging from highly siliceous to highly kaolinitic has been investigated. All experiments were performed in fresh water at solids concentrations of 25 and 45% solids and in the pH range 6 to 11. The kaolinitic ores exhibited greater changes in rheology with pH and calcium ion concentration than did the siliceous ores.

A previous investigation showed that corrosion currents estimated from polarization curves for the pyrrhotite-grinding media system under abrasion correlated well with corrosion currents estimated from marked ball wear test data by applying the Faraday's Law. Freshly abraded metal debris were magnetically attracted to pyrrhotite and lowered the rest potentials of the mineral particles, thereby affecting the corrosive wear. The investigation was extended to explore the interactions between a nonmagnetic sulfide mineral, pyrite, and abraded metal debris and their effects on the corrosive wear mechanism. The electrochemical behavior of a three-electrode system involving pyrrhotite, pyrite and grinding media was also investigated as a first step towards elucidating the nature of interactions that occur in the grinding of complex sulfide ores.

It has been estimated that 30% of the United States coal reserves occur in the Western States at depths which would preclude exploitation by surface techniques. Much of this coal occurs in seams considerably thicker than those presently mined in other parts of the country. Recognizing the lack of technology and experience in exploiting the thicker seam range the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines is implementing a major "Mining System for Western Coal," research program which has as its ultimate objective the development and demonstration of underground mining methods and technology for extracting these seams. One investigation, being carried out by D'Appolonia Consulting engieers, under contract to the Bureau of Mines, is concerned with design of an entry system for longwall top slicing of thick western coal seams. This presentation presents an overview of some of the problems which have to be faced in designing such layouts.

The lack of metrics to assess clamshell formation dredgeability limits the ability of engineers to predict the dredgeability of compact material and increases the risks associated with clamshell selection. Research is needed to develop metrics for predicting clamshell dredgeability. The objective of this paper is to evaluate possible metrics to predict the dredgeability of compact aggregates by hydraulically actuated clamshell dredges. Data on cylinder pressures and displacements, motor current, bucket tilt and cycle time (CT) were collected from a dredge. Work done and motor energy, potential metrics, were computed and their suitability in predicting dredgeability evaluated. Data analysis shows that; there is no correlation between tilt angle and work done or motor energy; a low correlation between CT and work done, and a strong correlation between CT and motor energy. Work done is a better measure of formation dredgeability, than motor energy, as it shows lower variability. However, in difficult digging conditions, work done alone does not accurately predict dredgeability. This work shows that, it is feasible to use cylinder pressures and motor signals data to predict dredgeability.

Despite the severe drought conditions that reduced farm requirements for industrial mineral products, most industrial minerals markets in 1988 continued their growth or, at worst, remained flat. Earlier projections of output declines did not materialize in most segments. Preliminary estimates of demand in Europe and Asia show strong growth for most industrial minerals. Profitability in industrial minerals in North America was best in those minerals that had a significant export market or were not strongly regional. Growth and price trends in the more regional industrial minerals markets in the US such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, and cement, more closely followed the broadly disparate regional economic conditions. For example, sand and gravel and crushed stone grew strongly in the Pacific Coast and northeastern markets but not as much as in the Southeast. Total growth for sand and gravel in 1988 is projected at about 3% above 1987 levels. Combined production is up about 27 Mt (30 million st) to 2 Gt (2.2 billion st). Following the relentless trend of foreign acquisition of US cement companies (currently about two-thirds are owned by foreign interests), several aggregate operations have been purchased by foreign companies. Notable among these in 1988 was the acquisition of Rinker Materials Corp. by CSR of Australia. The acquisition of this Florida-based aggregate and concrete operation will expand the current holdings of CSR in the southeastern US, with operations consolidated under the Rinker logo. In addition, Pike Industries of New England and J.L. Shiely Co. of Minnesota were significant aggregate producers that were acquired by foreign firms. New England's only cement manufacturer, Dragon Products, was acquired by a subsidiary of Cementes del Norte of Spain. Dravo continued to expand its influence in the lime and limestone markets. It became the major supplier of construction aggregates on the inland river system with its purchase of Cyprus Minerals' limestone aggregate operations in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas. Although lime production continued to grow from 14 to 15 Mt (15.7 to 16.7 million st) in 1988, lime imports decreased for the fifth consecutive year to 145 kt (160,000 st). In the more export-oriented industrial minerals markets, performance was generally very good for 1988. Soda ash enjoyed an excellent year, with its price up to $102.50/t ($93 per st). This reflected the tight market situation for soda ash, particularly in late 1988. Soda ash production in 1988 was 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st), reflecting the industry's improved efficiency. Particularly significant was the increase in caustic soda prices that led to increased substitution by soda ash. The export market remained at 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st). Phosphate production recovered to the 42 Mt (46 million st) level, a 12% increase despite a soft export market. The price, however, remained soft throughout the year. W.R. Grace sold its interest in its Florida phosphate mine and its phosphoric acid complex as part of its divestiture of the agrichemicals business. The strengthening of the major producers has continued as lower cost capacity has been idled. Future permitting of phosphoric acid facilities and development of reserves will be necessary to maintain current production levels beyond the mid- to late 1990s. Despite new developments worldwide in the titanium minerals market, strong demand has continued to apply pressure to price, with concentrate and slag prices going up. The demand for high quality slag as feedstock for pigment production has resulted in process improvements in South Africa (Richard's Bay) and in plans by Canada to import high quality ilmenite by 1991 to produce a 90% TiO2 slag. Although growth in industrial silica sand applications was small in 1988, concentration in the industry continued. Unimin continued to acquire silica operations. Unimin is now the nation's leading producer of granular silica. The end users of silica have consolidated further. Owens-Illinois purchased Brockway Inc., a leading container glass producer. Three companies now control 75% of the container glass industry. ECC continued to be an aggressive purchaser of industrial minerals operations throughout the world. It acquired Cyprus Minerals' calcium carbonate business as well as two operations in Italy. In addition, ECC continued its aggressive acquisition of kaolin (Australia) and aggregate producers. 1988 was a good year for industrial minerals markets worldwide. More importantly, though, it was a year that showed continuing consolidations of reserve ownership in the industry around the world. Barite AN. Castelli, Baroid Drilling Fluids Inc. US mine production of barite decreased 9.4% during 1988. Consumption (sold or used by grinding plants) increased by 37.9%. Imports are estimated to have increased by 21.2%. World mine production decreased by 9.8%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 4.6%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported ground barite during the first 10 months of 1988 increased from $37.16/t ($33.71 per st) in 1987 to $37.92/t ($34.40 per st), according to Bureau figures. Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 72% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. The Bureau of Mines estimates 69% of US mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The other 31% was used in barium chemicals, glass, or as a filler. Acid rain legislation as proposed by President Bush [1], if enacted, will immediately refocus current thinking on the economic decision-making as related to coal preparation facilities. Unit operations currently ignored because of their costs, will become mandatory to coal plant designers and operators to ensure maximum energy recovery and sulfur reduction in the entire coal stream. In anticipation of this need, the U.S. Department of Energy, The Ohio Coal Development Office, EPRI and others are sponsoring research in several areas of coal preparation, and coal plant designers are beginning to consider more innovative techniques as they configure their flowsheets for plants of the future. The use of standard dense-media cyclones is well known, as they have been in use for many years. They are especially well suited for operating at low separating densities and for treating difficult coals containing a high percentage of near-gravity at the point of separation. Very few modifications of the basic design have ever been made. The author recently, however, has been interested in the development of a new type of dense-media cyclone that has been produced in Japan. He has observed the testing of this unit and has collected much data which he feels should be of considerable interest to coal preparation engineers. He feels that this unit, called the Swirl Cyclone, may be of substantial value as an alternate to the standard cyclones. It is certainly worthy of further investigation. There has been relatively little written in English-language publications on the Swirl Cyclone. It was briefly described at the Fifth International Coal Preparation Congress. I It has been described in a general manner by the author in two prior publications. 2, 3 This paper proposes to describe this device in more detail and at the same time submit technical data illustrating its wide characteristics.

"INTRODUCTION Barrick Goldstrike underground mine is located in Northern Nevada on the Carlin trend. The underground mine produces approximately 1.5 to 1.8 million tons a year and approximately 400,000 ounces of gold a year. The mine is comprised of two main mining methods, underhand drift and fill and long hole stopeing. The mass blast project stated in 2012 as Value in Use project between Barrick, Southwest Energy and Orica, the goal of this project is to be able to blast an entire drilled stope in one blasting event instead of taking multiple blasts. This will improve productivity by eliminating intermediate blasts, reducing additional blast time, eliminate drill hole cleaning due to the previous blast. Project implantation started in the fourth quarter of 2013 and mass blasting has been common practice throughout all of 2014. STOPPING PRACTICE AT GOLDSTRIKE BEFORE MASS BLAST PROJECT The production from the Goldstrike mine is approximately 70% from stopes. The timely completion of all stoping blocks is imperative to maintaining the plan, delays in the execution of any particular block can have detrimental ripple down effects as neighbouring stoping blocks become delayed. Before the implementation of this project the standard practice for Goldstrike was to: 1. Drill the entire stope 2. Blast a bottom shot, normally between 10 feet and 20 feet off the bottom of the slot rings. This would be mucked out before the next shot 3. Blast a pull through shot, this included the raise and one or two production rings. Again mucking this out before the next shot 4. Blast production rings, one or two more blasts depending on stope size. In most cases between each of these blasts the holes in the other rings of the stope would have to be cleaned. This meant either cleaning manually using air and water, or mechanically cleaning with a bench drill. In many cases this resulted in delays in completing the stoping block."

To date, large-scale solution mining has received little attention in Australia, although the potential of this technique has not gone unnoticed. The possibility of long-term damage to the local environment has also been recognized. Because no two orebodies are the same, it is clear that the application of solution mining techniques and the assessment of environ- mental damage will be somewhat different for different orebodies, even though the general principles will be the same. At present the most significant copper solution mining operation in Australia is at the Mammoth (Gun- powder) Mine in northern Queensland. This mine currently produces more than 3 000 t of cement copper a year.1

A new coal interface detection (CID) method is under investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This novel concept is based on utilizing a passive infrared system (FIR) to measure temperature changes associated with the cutting of coal and adjacent strata. For this method to work successfully, a definite mechanical/hardness contrast must exist between coal and rock. Advantages include that FIR responds instantaneously at the coal-rock interface and it is minimally affected by dust and/or water sprays. Based on preliminary tests, results indicate that the PIR method can be applied successfully in mines having a hard immediate roof.

The Mariana arc is an ~1,400-km-long intraoceanic arc that marks the southern extension of the Izu-Bonin arc, and is host to 62 ?volcanic centers? of which at least 27 (21 submarine) are hydrothermally, or volcanically active. A surface ship cruise in early 2003 mapped the distribution of hydrothermal plumes emanating from these centers, followed by remotely operated vehicle (ROV) cruises with ROPOS in 2004 and Jason II in 2006. With the exception of one volcano (East Diamante), none of the vent sites visited by the ROVs were host to sulfide mineralization. Rather, they were characterized by high sulfidation mineral assemblages dominated by native sulfur. The sulfur was seen marking the vicinity of vent sites, or as sulfur ?chimneys? (e.g., NW Eifuku and Nikko), or more spectacularly as ?lakes? of molten sulfur, either occupying the summit crater of the volcano (e.g., Nikko), or perched on the flanks of the volcano, near the summit (e.g., Daikoku). Gas (H2S and CO2) was discharging through the molten sulfur. Evidence for these lakes to have either been substantially ?deeper? in their recent past (e.g., Nikko), or existing at other volcanoes (e.g., Seamount ?X?) is given by remnant ?pillars? of native sulfur that are reminiscent of rock pillars in lava lakes found along mid-ocean ridges.

The major problems are identified the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities, in, ,the iron bearing minerals, A process which combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation separation methods, is suggested. By these methods concentrates assaying 60-61 percent Fe exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56 percent Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90 percent iron recovery. Moreover it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25 to 0.03 percent phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

Microcomputer technology has begun to revolutionize petroleum engineering. Petroleum engineers' use of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC's) is likely to continue expanding rapidly. Since 1982 SPE's Microcomputer Applications Committee has developed a Society-wide users group, a bi-monthly newsletter (MICROCOMP NEWS), an SPE Short Course, a hardware and software distribution program, and a world wide electronic network (SPE NET). The purpose of this paper is to share SPE's experience in creating a dynamic program for meeting the individual member's need in the application of microcomputers to petroleum engineering. My hope is that this will encourage other engineering and scientific organizations to provide similar programs for their members.

The first of a series on the evaluation of rock cutting tools, this paper discusses the results of full-scale laboratory drilling tests that compare the performances of several polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) coring bits. The tests were performed in welded tuff as part of a site characterization program. Number of cutters, size of cutters, air course design, and other parameters were evaluated as they affect penetration rate, but this paper focuses mainly on the relationships of torque vs. thrust (weight-on-bit), specific energy vs. penetration rate, and thrust vs. penetration rate. These relationships change in diagnostic ways according to bit type, bit condition, and type of welded tuff.

This paper describes several variants of placement and design, from a technical and economic point of view, of shafts, ore bunkers and drifts near shafts of a Russian potash mine. Advantages and disadvantages of the position of different workings are shown as well as an analysis of stratigraphic and geological layers and their use for excavating pit bottoms, haulage drifts and bunker installations. The potash mine consists of two hoisting shafts and one service shaft. The hoisting capacity of one of these skip shafts is planned to be approx. 7 Million tons of crude potash salt per year. Both shafts together will have a hoisting volume of about 14 Million tons. When the mine will increase their highest level of production, it will be one of the biggest potash mines in the world. The skips, the hoist drives and the bunker near the shaft will belong to the largest ones worldwide, too. This paper specifies the features of such a double skip shaft pit in detail and demonstrates problems, which depend on the fact that the pit bottom is in a depth of nearly 1200 m.

The Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) is located in northern central Nevada, and is situated within the Basin and Range province, near the northeast end of the Osgood Mountains (see Figure 1). The TRJV mine consists of typical Carlin type- gold mineralization characterized by low strength rock of altered limestones, siltstones, and mudstones. The weak nature of the ground facilitates the underhand cut and fill mining methods. TRJV has been working to optimize ground support and mechanize top cut drift sizes and eliminate operating hazards associated with jackleg drilling. Safety Factor analysis based on bolt strengths has allowed us to pursue larger sized top cut drifts and to evaluate bolt length sizes and spacing. Switching from jackleg sized drifts of 10?W x 10?H to a mechanized 12?H x12?W top cut drift design has the potential to decrease overbreak, provide more uniform drift design sizes and bolt patterns, and increase ore production by at least 38%.

Pyrite depression is of great interest in sulfide mineral flotation, where pyrite is a common gangue mineral. Since the floatability of pyrite is a function of the pH and a variety of other chemical factors, pH control is a critical part of sulfide flotation circuits. A wide variety of pyrite-depressing chemicals have been studied and used in sulfide- mineral processing, with considerable success. However, there are certain applications where there are still no satisfactory pyrite depressants, and even when suitable depressants are available, there is always a need for less-expensive reagents. Microorganisms, such as the bacteria Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, are known to depress pyrite flotation. However, the dependence of the depression on the type of organism or on suspension pH is still being determined. In this study, the relative effectiveness of various microorganisms, and the effect of pH, has been examined. Screening tests using microflotation showed that every microorganism tested was capable of depressing naturally hydrophobic pyrite at acidic pH. Larger-scale experiments with two of the screened organisms and two different pyrites showed that microorganisms are very effective depressants at acid pH, but are largely ineffective at neutral and alkaline pH where the pyrite surface is not naturally hydrophobic.
