In some 35 years in the explosive and construction industries, we have probably seen the extremes in drilling and blasting practices. All of you know that it is difficult if not impossible, to separate those two operations, particularly when we are searching for an optimum. Early in my career while doing engineering survey work for a major cross country pipeline construction company, we witnessed some of the wildest blasts imaginable, and they were wild for two reasons. Both the drill hole diameter and the drill pattern were such that when loaded with explosives, the factor in terms of pounds/cu. yd. was extremely high. On the other hand, in 1982 we were in an underground coal mine where just one hole was used to prepare a 20-ft. (6m) wide face. In this coal mine, they brought down 7 yd3 (5.35m3) of coal with just 1 lb. (.454 kg) of explosive. On a pipeline job, the factor may only be .1 yd3 per lb. of explosives. Open pit operations in the same geographical area may have almost the same type of rock, but similarities could end there. The several operators over the years will have installed different size-crushing equipment or variances will exist in other facets such as drilling, excavating, and haulage units. That tells us that if we have 6 operations in that common area, we are faced with a fact that there is an optimum drilling and blasting pattern for each of those six. We start at that point. We will note from Figure No. 2 the simple equations for determining either cu. yds. or tons. For a rock heavier than limestone, it may require only 10 to 11 cu. ft. (.31m3) for 1 ton (.91 metric ton) of rock in place.

Epithermal vein systems are often modeled as simple, discrete high grade structures within low grade host rock. However, geologic setting and structural preparation influence how such vein systems form. In structurally complex areas, veins may follow several structural trends and occur on a variety of scales. Geologic and grade modeling within such complex structural regimes can be difficult as individual veins cannot be delineated from host rock based on grade alone. Structurally complex areas require a different approach than traditional discrete vein modeling. Presented herein is a study of a structurally complex area that hosts vein mineralization to be mined underground. All veins could not be modeled discretely, so an alternate approach was needed. Major structures were modeled using surface and underground mapping and were then used to create a structural trend for the area. This trend was used to guide 3D grade shell construction. The grade shells replaced 3D vein solids for grade estimation in order to mitigate the influence of high grade samples. Structurally guided grade shell construction offers a more effective modeling method than discrete vein modeling in deposits that are structurally complex.

In the screening process, used to prepare particles for many applications, shape is known to have a significant effect. The degree of flakiness of construction aggregates has been considered particularly important. The objective of this research was to find values of operating parameters that optimize the separation of flaky from non-flaky particles by slotted screens. Thus an investigation was conducted to experimentally determine the influence of the particle size and thickness on the screening process. The Response surface method was employed for modelling and analysis of the data. Experiments employing a central composite design were performed on a pilot-scale, rectangular-aperture, vibrating screen to examine the effects of the screening variables the mass recovery of flaky and non-flaky particles to the oversize product. The SAS statistics package was used to fit a second-order model to each response and to analyze the fitted surface to determine the optimum levels. The optimization associated with a dual response system was then considered. The results of this study should provide a basis for optimizing screening conditions to obtain maximum recovery of non-flaky particles to the screen oversize while minimizing the recovery of flaky particles, which should be of interest to the aggregate industries.

Kittilä Mine is a gold mine located in Northern Finland, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Finland. The mining operation started in 2008 with open pits which were completed in 2012 and production moved to being entirely underground. The mine consists of four separate orebodies, currently producing 2.0 Mt per annum, and requiring over 19 km of development on a yearly basis. The principal mining method is long hole stoping with delayed backfill. Microseismic monitoring was initially tested in the Suuri orebody, in the mining block between the 625 and 500 Levels. A small monitoring system was installed in 2018, after observations of stress-induced damage to the rock mass and in anticipation of future mining at greater depth. The initial goals were to evaluate if useful data could be recorded and test the signal quality of different sensor types. Prior to 2018, ground control related challenges in the Suuri and Roura mining blocks had been mostly related to sill pillar mining and block movements between weak graphitic schist planes. Seismic monitoring in the Suuri deposit proved successful for following the rock mass response to mining and helped support the rationale for early monitoring in the new, deeper mining block in Rimpi at 900 m depth. Preliminary geotechnical characterization and testing of the rock mass showed areas of silicification in the footwall rocks with potentially continuous structural features. Seismic monitoring of the Rimpi area has confirmed the brittle behavior of the rock mass, with strong seismic responses induced by stress changes following blasting being recorded. In addition to this expected behavior, a large magnitude event associated with significant damage in the footwall drive development 90 m above the stoping was experienced. Initial investigation of the rockburst showed two separate damage locations with over 300 tons of displaced rock. The seismic monitoring system recorded this rockburst as a single seismic event with magnitude significantly larger than previously recorded. Additional analyses indicated a possible thrust fault event, triggering two separate strainbursts. Following this event, the ground support system was upgraded in parts of the footwall drives to improve dynamic capacity. Nickel ores may be classified into two major categories : sulphide ores, and oxidized lateritic ores, these latter containing nearly 80% of the known reserves of the metal (1). Two types of lateritic ores are recognized; ores high in iron but low in magnesia and silica are known as "limonitic", while ores low in iron but containing high percentages of magnesia and silica are called "silicate" (see Table I). Sulphide ores can be beneficiated readily by conventional ore dressing techniques and the technology for nickel recovery from such ores has been well tested in a number of commercial processes (1-4). Unfortunately, no economically viable process for the concentration of nickel from low-grade deposits has yet been developed, and so only the high grade ores are able to be worked profitably. Silicate ores have been treated pyrometallurgically for the production of ferronickel (2) (3) (5); limonitic ores have been processed hydrometallurgically to produce nickel metal (2) (3) (6) (7).

The El Soldado copper mineralization occurs as relatively high-grade irregular ore bodies with assay contacts and with frequent inclusions of barren rock. The sampling method must be timely for production grade control purposes, as well as accurate and inexpensive. Sampling techniques evolved from sampling dump cars at the haulage level to sampling scooptrams at the loading pockets. These were abandoned in favor of sampling production blast holes. Several sampling alternatives are discussed. These involve the selection of optimum volumes and sampling frequencies while taking into consideration geological parameters and statistical analyses of sampling data.

Background ground water quality is often used to drive remediation programs at sites with waters affected by mining activities. In the past these levels were sometimes chosen without rigorous statistical and geochemical analysis. A probability distribution approach was used at the Sweetwater Uranium Project to separate a large set of geochemical data into populations that represent contributions from different sources. Natural background populations were identified for major ions, metals, and radionuclides, and were submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to modify the extent of a Corrective Action Program and to establish control limits for future monitoring.

During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

Flexible synthetic membrane liners have become a standard facet to copper and gold heap leach pad design. While gold heap leach operations have utilized most types of synthetic liners, copper leach operations have commonly only been lined with polyethylene. The objective of this study was to determine if there are any chemical reasons why other synthetic membrane types could not be used to line a copper heap leach facility. With engineered consideration, the flexible membrane liner under the ore pile serves two purposes. The first provides a near impermeable boundary which aides greatly in the collection of the metal laden process solution. The second advantage to the flexible membrane is the almost non-permeable barrier to benefit increased environmental awareness that has led to an increase in solution containment technology. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a compatibility test for solutions and membrane liners. The EPA Method 9090 is intended for use in determining the chemical effects of a solution on the physical properties of the flexible membrane liner material intended to contain them. Data from these tests would assist in deciding whether a given liner material is acceptable for the intended application.

Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. A recent report to President Reagan from the Business-Higher Education Forum, entitled, "America's Competitive Challenge: Need for a National Response," (1) observes that in the recent past, ". . . much of that research, which is necessary for major breakthroughs and sustained productivity improvements, was redirected to short-term objectives ... At the same time, American universities, which conduct more than half of the nation's basic research, have suffered from an accumulated under-investment in facilities and equipment amounting to an estimated $1-4 billion." Also contributing to the decline in America's productivity, the report said, are "...weak technology transfers between government and industry and between universities and industry..." This report as well as other recent reports and articles have, reopened a subject which has long been debated but rarely resolved-- the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is unfortunately, too often treated as a controversial issue involving ethics and the profit motive when, in fact, the two branches of society -- industry and academia -- are necessarily part of the same system. I would like to speak to you today on the subject of university-industry interactions and to some extent discuss the role of government in such interactions. Finally, I will make some remarks as to how this subject applies to the mining industry.

Grefco Inc. exploration has defined a large embayment of commercial grade freshwater diatomite in Shasta County. Exploitation of this massive deposit could substantially increase California's diatomite production.

Crushing and grinding practice in Sweden follows largely the international pattern. Certain special circumstances, however, have had an influence on the development. Most mines are worked underground in either quite small or in very large units. To utilize small sulphide ores, custom milling is rather common. Apart from the cement industry, the rock species treated are hard and abrasive. Another important factor is the increasingly strict requirements placed on the mechanical condition of different products, especially lump ores and coarse iron ore concentrates. A significant feature in the design and development of Swedish crushing and grinding practice has also been close cooperation between machinery manufacturers and the users. An account of these conditions and an outline of the crushing and grinding techniques employed in Sweden are presented in this paper with emphasis on the mining industry. For background purposes it may be mentioned that crude ore production in Sweden last year included 45 mill. tonsx) of iron ore, of which some 20 mill. tons from Kiruna alone, and 4 mill. tons of sulphide ore from 22 other mines, fig. 1. In addition 8 mill. tons of limestone were quarried for cement production and several million tons of stone and sand for roads, aerated concrete, etc.

The Dee disseminated gold deposit is the northernmost mine in the Carlin gold belt. We analyzed soil samples £ran undisturbed areas overlying the deposit to determine the usefulness of soil geochemistry in identifying ore zones. The depth of sampling ranged from 12 to 14 inches, depending on soil development. The -80 mesh fraction was analyzed by atomic absorption for Au, As, Sb, Hg, and T1 and by semiquantitative spectrographic analysis for Ag. Highly anomalous Au, Kg, As, Ag, and Sb are most closely associated with ore zones whereas T1 is more broadly dispersed. Hg is the only element that identifies deep ore.

Thorite and rare earth deposits in the Lemhi Pass area of southeastern Lemhi County, Idaho, are contained along complex shear and fracture zones and in reopened gold-quartz veins and copper lodes in quartzitic and phyllitic rocks of the Pre-cambrian belt series. Some of the shear and fracture zones are several tons of feet across and comprise broad zones of irregularly mineralized rock. These lodes contain a notable concentration of thorium and rare earth elements along with considerable amounts of barium, .potassium, calcium, iron, aluminum, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. The principal minerals are thorite, locally allanite, monazite, xenotime (?), apatite, specular hematite, barite, potash feldspar, occasionally calcite and quartz. Exept for some of 'the specular hematite, barite, reddish feldspar, calcite and quartz, the minerals are not distinguishable without the microscope. The thorite and locally allanite were deposited first, then the monazite and other phosphates, which were in turn followed successively by barite, potash, feldspar, calcite, and quartz. In exceptional cases, deposition of thorite and specular hematite was repeated after the feldspar. Some of the deposits contain several percent thoria, but the average os generally under one percent. The rare earth content is comparable with that of the thoria. The deposits appear to be of hydrothermal origin and are probably related genetically to late Cretaceous or early Tertiary igneous activity, manifested locally by a few dioritie and lamprophyric dikes.

A quantitative x-ray diffraction method has been developed for the analysis of alteration minerals in wallrock. Alteration data are plotted and contoured (analogous to geochemical data). Alteration trends outlined by this technique correlate closely with geochemical anomalies, and in some cases attend well beyond the perimeter of anomalous base metal values. "Monomineralic contouring," applied originally to porphyry-type mineralization, has been extended to other types of mineralization, including volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Equipment and techniques used in the quantitative measurement of alteration mineralogy are discussed.

"A unique pumped hydro storage facility using the ocean as a lower reservoir, combined with solar PV to create consistent, clean power will be presented: the Espejo de Tarapacá Project is comprised of a 300 MW seawater pumped storage hydroelectric plant using the Pacific Ocean as its lower reservoir and an existing natural concavity at the desert as its upper reservoir. The plant site is located in Chile’s northern coast 90 km south of Iquique. The site is characterized by a rocky shoreline and about 600 m of flat terrain moving inland, with an abundance of rock outcrops, after which there is a steep 700 m cliff. The power house and all waterways will be underground. The main focus is to present the rocks being expected in the underground works. As one of the actual most tectonically active regions of the world the seismic activity is particularly relevant and will be outlined in the presentation. INTRODUCTION Valhalla Energy is an independent Chilean-owned power development company. It focuses on the development, ownership and operation of renewable power projects. Valhalla was founded in 2011 with the goal of developing Chile’s natural renewable energy resources and strategically diversifies the country’s energy matrix away from an overdependence on imported fossil fuels. Valhalla began developing pumped storage hydro projects to provide scalable, clean, competitive, and reliable electricity by combining Chile’s superior solar resources with the country’s unique and extensive coastline suitable for storage.The capacity for renewable energy supply is driven by two distinct and unique natural characteristics found in northern Chile: (1) the abundant and reliable solar irradiation in the Atacama Desert and (2) a coastal site that benefits from a steep cliff and a natural concavity both within a relatively small land mass (see Figure 1). There are several potential sites in the northern part of the country that can be developed. The “Espejo de Tarapacá Project” is the first one to be built and subject of the present paper."

Due to the remote locations of the mining projects and the demand for long transmission lines to provide electrical power, mining sites often operate with poor network power quality and low short circuit capacity. In order to cope up with this situation, more and more mining projects are considering the installation of appropriately designed Synchronous Condensers(SC) together with Power Factor Correction and Harmonic Filter System(PFC&HFS). The installation of these power quality equipments is viewed as a technological advancement in the mining application. An adequate level of short circuit power is essential and has to be ensured for the safe and reliable operation of especially large cycloconverter driven gearless mill drive systems used for grinding application. Increase in plant short circuit power is generally achieved by lowering the impedance of the supplying network. The SC also provides smooth voltage control during mill starting or major load trips, thereby regulating the plant voltage within the required limits. This paper will explore the impact, technical advantage and reasoning for the selection of the advanced hybrid technology mentioned above, in order to cope with the power system challenges for future mining projects. It also highlights the potential problems and how to address them carefully.

Hanna has developed three production planning systems to help the mine engineers determine the sequence of mining from available ore supples. The Production Scheduling System was developed to give the staff a tool for long range planning by sequencing the removal of blocks from an open pit property. It was needed to determine the year of removal for each block so that the optimum present-valued pit limits could be established by our pit design program. Since in this type of planning short term grade control is less of a factor than it is in daily or monthly planning, the system gives the program greater control and more latitude in block selection. It permits only full blocks to be taken.

The Bituminous Coal Mining Industry of the Federal Republic of Germany produces nearly 100 million t/yr of clean coal. The largest coal mining area is the Ruhr District with dimensions of 100 x 40 km (65 x 25 miles). Figure 1: Here is the general administration of Ruhrkohle Akteingesellschaft RAG with its three divisions. Other coal mining areas in Germany are the Saar District and the Aachen District. Ruhrkohle produces 70 million t/yr of clean coal. The company operates 28 mines in the Ruhr District with an average raw coal production of 18000 t/day. Their average mining depth is 831 m (2740 ft.) and the average seam thickness is 177 cm (70 in.). Figure 2: Preparation plant reject is 44.6%. All following production figures will be with reference to raw coal because the raw coal production is the technically relevant number. Mining operations are mainly in non-dipping coal deposits whereby mechanized equipment for flat seams is also applied to deposits dipping up to 45? Coal extraction is done exclusively by the longwall method. Approximately 200 longwall installations are in production at any time. The average longwall length is 221 m (730 ft) ranging between 140 and 290 m (460 ft and 960 ft). The average longwall advance of all operations is 2.8 m/day (8.4 ft per day). Average production
