A heavy-mineral deposit about 1.6 kilometers (I mile) in length and averaging about three meters (10 feet) in thickness is exposed approximately130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert County, Colorado near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium Ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet, and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan, and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Georgia. Thus, Titanium Ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late Cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.

Before 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. When considering expansion, it was decided that the existing process would not lend itself to a program geared toward processing the total output of copper precipitate and copper concentrate from KUCC mining and concentrating operations. During 1989 and 1990, several smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1 Mt/a (1.1 million stpy) of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 Mt/a (1.3 million stpy). The smelter facility that used the Noranda technology was shut down in May 1995. The flash smelting furnace operation began in June with the flash converting furnace start-up a few weeks later.

A few months ago, Congress passed, and President Bush signed, a national energy bill. Designed to decrease the nation’s dependence on foreign sources of energy, the bill earmarked several billion dollars to increase the use of U.S. coal reserves. The bill also modified permitting regulations to speed up development of the coal reserves located on federal land. Coal currently supplies more than half of the nation’s electricity needs. And as housing starts continue to in-crease and with the nation’s appetite for electronic gadgetry, the demand for energy in the United States will only go up. That means coal producers must expand production while at the same time containing costs so they can enjoy this period of improved coal prices.

Initial investment for mechanical boring of tunnels is found to be high in most cases. Conventional drilling and blasting is not the possible especially in urban area. In these conditions impact hammer offers many advantages over conventional drill and blast techniques and boring tunnels. These include improved safety, minimal ground disturbances, elimination of blast vibration, reduced ventilation requirements, reduced cost etc. Therefore, hydraulic impact hammers have been used widely in metro tunnelling projects in Istanbul since 1992. Accumulated and published data from various tunnelling projects serve to improve predicting the machine performance and scheduling of job duration. This paper is prepared under this objective. Machine utilization time of impact hammer was evaluated in this study. The main rock formation named Kartal formation arepaleozoic aged sedimentary rocks, shale, sandstone, siltstone, andesite dykes and sediment fillings. The first stage of the project is commissioned to Yapi Merkezi- Yuksel- Dogus- Yenigun- Belen consortium.

The Getchell Mine is located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, NV. Mining in the area first began in 1883 for copper, lead and silver in skarn-related deposits. Tungsten was discovered in the skarns in 1916 and was mined sporadically until 1957. The first major discovery was made in 1933 when two Winnemucca prospectors, Edward Knight and Emmett Chase, found gold at the present site of the Getchell gold mine. In 1934, after a small amount of preliminary prospecting, the claims were purchased by Noble H. Getchell of Midas, NV. The Getchell Mine Inc. was organized and exploration and development work began on a broad scale. Major funding was provided by George Wingfield and investors he assembled. Laxalt described Wingfield’s immediate history prior to his financing of Getchell as follows.

INTRODUCTION With only about 30% of Japan's entire population served by sewer systems at the end of 1980, extensive sewerage construction programs have been implemented. As major sewer networks in large cities are near completion, construction of smaller sewer networks in less populated areas and branch sewers in urban areas is on the rise, where a demand for sewer tunnels of 600mm to 1500mm diameter is very heavy. The pipe jacking technique, usually employed to excavate such small diameter tunnels, therefore has become the subject of further technological development and sophistication to cope with the increasing volume of construction. At the 1979 RETC, the state of the art on the slurry shield tunneling method at that time was reported. This paper is a follow up to the last paper and discusses a newly developed boulder crushing equipment and automatic pipe jacking system for the slurry shield method and their application. Such technological advancement as high-degree mechanization and automation will significantly improve tunneling operations in response to the aging society to come. Through application of the technique on so called factory automation, this is a step towards field automation for the construction industry.

Overcasts are indispensible ventilation control devices to permit one airway to pass over another without mixing in room and pillar coal mining. The airflow distribution inside the overcast depends on its spe-cific configuration at which the flow enters into it. This study uses 3D numerical simulation to examine the pressure and velocity distributions inside an overcast. The effects of the overcast angle on the flow field are also examined. The flow is assumed to be turbulent and isothermal and the standard k-e model is utilized. Simulated results display flow separation and recirculation regions of different sizes occurring not only upstream and downstream from the overcast but also inside it. The results also show that the size of the recirculation regions in-creased with the increase in the angle before and after the overcast influencing significantly the flow field and pressure losses. The stream-lines are plotted to show the 3D structure of the flow field. The results from the simulation can guide overcast design commonly used in un-derground coal mines. Exploration expenditures in Alaska last year amounted to $8.9 million. This was comparable to 1985's $9.1 million. Development expenditures dropped 29%, $24.3 million in 1986 vs. $34.1 million in 1985. The exploration industry is restructuring and stabilizing after the loss of major mineral firms during the last few years. These included Anaconda Minerals, Asarco, Hecla Mining, Enserch Exploration, Phillips Minerals Division, Exxon Minerals, Noranda Inc., General Crude, Mohawk Oil & Gas, Inspiration Development, Teton Exploration, and St. Joe Minerals Division. Some of these companies were mineral subsidiaries of oil companies and were either dissolved or redirected to programs outside of Alaska. However, recent entry exploration firms include Echo Bay Mines Ltd., Long Lac Minerals, and Exvenco. They are busy evaluating prospects and mineral developments in the southeastern panhandle. In the 1970s, about $254 million was spent on Alaska mineral exploration. Of this, about 5% ($12 million) was for nonmetallics and coal, about 26% was directed at precious metals ($66 million) mainly gold, and 69% ($175.3 million) for the base metals zinc, copper, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, and nickel. Since the early 1980s, trends have reversed. Of the nearly $196.3 million spent from 1981-1986, 48% has been for precious metals ($94.3 million) and 40% on nonmetallics and coal. In the last two years, nearly 70% of the Alaskan exploration dollar has been spent in search of precious metals. Three gold skarns were explored during the year - the Nixon Fork project in western Alaska (Battle Mountain Mining Co.), the Nebesna and Rambler lodes of the northern Wrangell Mountains (Nebesna Mining Partners), and the Zackley project near Paxson in southcentral Alaska (Nerco Minerals). Nearly 7.6 km (25,000 ft) of diamond and rotary drilling were conducted on these three properties. Rock bolts are components of tunnel support structures and their efficacy in reinforcement requires the appropriate estimation of the bolt pre-tension. However, cases of ineffective rock bolt application due to loosening are common which leads to the potential failure of the support structures, thus negatively affecting the tunnel stability. The effective employment of pre-tensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut pre-load. Henceforth, this paper presents a load indicator washer (LIW) capable of withstanding assigned static loading as well as provides an appropriate pre-tension. The different LIW breadths are numerically analysed in the finite element code (ABAQUS) to estimate deformation when a designated 60-kN pre-load is applied. The numerical simulation employs a bi-linear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nutLIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, a long-term relaxation effect on bolt pre-tension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW-predetermined deformation is the bolt pre-tension. It is drawn from the simulation results that the 1.5-, 2.0-, 3.0-, 3.5-, and 4.0-mm-thick LIWs are completely flattened when subjected to 28-, 42.5-, 65-, 76-, and 88-kN pre-load respectively.

1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. As mining continues toward deeper reserves in thick western US coal fields, the control of mining induced-seismicity has become a priority in many operations in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Gradual floor heave, common in many coal mines, has historically not been a safety issue. However recent occurrences of sudden floor heave accompanied with seismicity in a few deep mines have fueled this investigation. The focus is to identify and study the mechanisms resulting in sudden heaving of the mine floor in western U.S. deep coal mines through analytical calculations and back analyses of an actual event in a cooperative mine. Based on review of available data in three mines, underground observations and back analyses of an actual event, the authors have identified the following contributing factors (1) presence of stiff stratigraphic units and thick seams mined at depths exceeding 1000-ft (2) presence of geological discontinuities reducing the in-situ strength of the coal with calculated factor of safety near 1 for the mine floor (3) mining approaching areas of higher than normal stress gradient associated with previous mining or structural anomalies or surface topographic highs and (4) an additional source of energy triggering sudden failure such as periodic caving or slip along geological discontinuities. Preliminary examination of seismic data for the actual event in the cooperative mine and underground observations excluded fault slip at the mining horizon as the triggering mechanism but highlighted the significance of weak, anisotropic strata conditions near the intersection of two faults.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) is currently conducting a coal resource assessment of the coalbeds and zones that are projected to provide the bulk of the nation’s resources for the next few decades. The Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coals are the first two beds in the northern and central Appalachian basin region to undergo fully digital coal assessments. The bed-specific assessments are being carried out in partnership with the state geologic surveys of West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Comprehensive stratigraphic and geochemical databases have been developed for both of the beds. The extent of the bed with mined areas, structure contour, isopach, and overburden thickness maps for the Pittsburgh coal bed have been released as USGS open-file reports.

In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of the ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill grinding circuit has vast applications in the mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy, and research laboratories; however, this system has some challenges. The grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which the high interaction between loops, the variation of the system parameters with time, and time delay are some of the problems that pose a challenge. Since the controller parameters are determined offline in classic PID control, these gains are unchangeable and cannot overcome the mentioned challenges in this system. Hence, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller, which is a combination of fuzzy logic and a conventional PID controller, is proposed to control the grinding system, especially in the presence of model mismatch and disturbances. In addition, in order to solve the system challenges, a multivariable control approach based on an improved disturbance observer is proposed to suppress the effects of the disturbances. The most important feature of the algorithm proposed in this paper as the combination of fuzzy logic self-tuning PID and improved disturbance observer is its ability to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances, and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit. Simulation results in the cases of the set-point change in particle size and circulating load in the presence of model mismatch and external disturbances confirmed the controller performance compared to other controllers.

Construction for the new 2.5 MGPD raw water intake project commenced December 2002. The project, initially designed as a 12' Ø concrete lined intake shaft,145' deep, with two offset 24" lake taps, 520' and 470' long was subsequently “value engineered” running the two lake taps through a single conduit. The offset for summer and winter pools was accomplished via a second shaft located at the lakes edge. Construction involved the use of blind drilling techniques for the shaft development and drill and blast techniques for the tunneling. All works were completed through extremely hard crystallized sandstone. The project came online August 12, 2004.

The early part of the decade was marked by world-wide problems and economic difficulties. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter ordered the failed military mission to rescue hostages in the U.S. Embassy in Iran, Mt. Saint Helens, WA erupted killing 60 people and the Soviets and Mujaheddin guerrillas clashed in Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion. Later in the year, Ronald Reagan was elected president, defeating Carter. The first launch of a space shuttle (Columbia) occurred in 1981. Also in 1981, the first IBM-PC’s begin to roll off the lines. In 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands and Mexico’s economy was in collapse. In 1980, the U.S. unemployment rate stood at 7.1 percent, and by 1982 the rate increased to 9.7 percent. 1980 marked SME’s first full year in its new office building in Littleton, CO. The new facility was dedicated in November 1979. Claude L. Crowley was executive director of SME in 1980 and remained in that position throughout the decade. SME’s membership stood at about 26,000 throughout this period (1980-1982).

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2004 was estimated to be 635 kt (700,000 st). This was a 2-percent increase from 2003. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $164 million in 2004. Production was from six companies with 13 processing facilities in four states. Nevada and California were the principal producing states. They accounted for about78 percent of the U.S. production during 2004. U.S. diatomite exports were about 136 kt (150,000 st). Imports were negligible.

INTRODUCTION The subway line B of Toulouse (France) has been realized with three different tunnel boring machines (TBM) techniques: Contracts 2 and 5 are excavated with earth-pressure balanced TBM, Contract 4 with a slurry shield TBM, and Contract 3 with a compressed-air TBM. The first three machines are around 7.7 m in diameter, while the last one is 5.3 m. Moreover, a small part of the line (50 m) has been excavated by a conventional method. The tunnels run through the Toulouse molasses, composed of hard sandy clay with pockets and lenses of dense sand. Geotechnical investigations have shown that in these formations, K0 is greater than 1, around 1.8 at a depth of 25 m (Serratrice,2005) and that geotechnical characteristics are homogenous on the whole layout (? =22 kN/m3, Su = 300 kPa, c' = 30 kPa, F' = 32°). The water table is found between 2 and4 m below ground level. As geology, stratigraphy and tunnel cover (between 10 and 20 m) are almost identical, a comparison of movements induced by the excavation by each of the four excavation techniques is possible. This paper presents the soil mass movement measures in the case of the conventional excavation method and in the case of TBM sections. It shows how tunneling parameters may explain the different surface movements observed during excavation. For the sake of simplicity, only the results of Contract 2 (earth pressure balanced TBM)will be presented. On Feb. 11, 2005, more than 20 mining professionals gathered in Elko, NV for a day-long round-table discussion on heap leaching. Attendees included project managers, operators and environmental professionals. They represented 10 mining organizations. Knight Piésold sponsored the special event. Its seven representatives included three staff members from the company’s Elko Operation, and one each from its Denver, Cajamarca (Peru) and Vancouver offices. The roundtable format was chosen to allow people from the mining industry to share ideas and experiences in an open forum. Rather than presenting prepared talks, spontaneity was encouraged. This resulted in a lively and enjoyable discussion.

INTRODUCTION This is the first in a series of papers addressing practical tunnel lining design. The format for this and future papers is to present a particular topic and support the presentation of the guidelines by the practical application of a case history. The primary intent is to provide guidelines for the geotechnical and structural design of tunnels where the tunnel size and/or ground conditions dictates that systematic support of the excavation is required following each increment of excavation. This method of tunneling is commonly referred to as Sequential Excavation and Support(SES) and is also commonly termed the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) The authors developed the design guidelines from experience gained over the past two decades during the design and construction of several major railway, highway and water-transfer tunnel projects in Africa and Asia. During this time it has been possible to compare the performance of the as-constructed structures to the predicted performance as given by the design process. Excavation was typically carried out in widely varying ground conditions (weak-bedded rock, jointed hard rock, and soil-like poorly cemented rock with groundwater). It is therefore intended that the design guidelines could be applied, in general terms at least, to any tunnel excavated in any ground mass condition with any ground material type (hard rock, soft rock, bedded rock, soft ground, and soil) with or without ground water. This first paper is an introductory paper that defines the scope and a brief outline of the design issues that may be presented in detail in later papers. What is design? It may be thought of as any rational/verifiable/justifiable process whereby a concept is transformed into information that can be used to bring the concept to reality. In the case of a civil structure, design may be defined as that process, which is documented and can be audited, that determines information such as the shape (form) of the structure, the dimensions (size) of the structure, the thickness and strength of structural members that comprise the structure, etc. This information can be used to compute the time, money and resources required for
