The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. The paper reviews current mining subsidence research at The Department of Mining Engineering, University of Notting- ham. Special attention is being devoted to prediction of ground movements between the mining horizon and the surface using physical and computer-based models. The paper presented discusses linear and non- linear finite element methods and compares results with those from physical models and field observations. Special attention is focussed on the determination of the effect of caved zones on overlying and underlying geological structures. The paper presents data from comparisons with U.K. case histories.

Due to inefficiencies of the flotation process, significant effort has been recently provided to develop gravity separators for treating ultrafine particles. As a result, several enhanced gravity concentrators have been developed and commercialized. The Altair Centrifugal Jig is an enhanced gravity separator that provides relatively efficient separations on +25 µm size fractions. An experimental program conducted on -600 µm coal found that the Altair Jig reduced the ash content of the 600 x 44 µm from about 30% to 10% with an 86% combustible recovery value. The pulse water pressure, feed volumetric rate and ragging volume were found to be the key operating parameters affecting the separation performances obtained from the process. An extremely low density cut point of 1.54 and an Ep value of 0.08 were indicative of the high process efficiency values achievable by the Altair jig.

It is appropriate to discuss diatomite at an AIME meeting in San Francisco. California has led the nation, and the world, in the production of diatomite products for more than 40 years. It appears that our State will maintain this position for a long time to come. Diatomite today ranks high in the list of California mineral commodities, with a total value since 1889 well in excess of $100 million. California's production has more than doubled since 1942. In 1959, the value of diatomite production in California is exceeded only by the following industrial mineral materials-borates, stone, sand and gravel and cement20,28. Also, not unimportant is the production of diatomite in each of our other Pacific Coast States, including Nevada. First, let us define diatomite. It is a sedimentary siliceous rock of organic origin, which consists mainly of the fossilized remains of diatoms. Diatoms are microscopic aquatic plants which have the capacity of precipitating silica bio-chemically so as to form a part of their organized structure. In the economic sense, we are not concerned with the numerous types of sedimentary materials which contain minor amounts of diatom residues, or with impure or highly indurated siliceous materials, which may have been formed from diatomite2. Diatomite (synonyms--diatomaceous earth, kieselgurO is a term generally restricted to material of such qualities as to be suitable for commercial uses. Diatomaceous silica is a designation which is best used to distinguish the basic component of diatomite, that is, the substance of the silica shell itself, and which is the major' constituent of beneficiated diatomite or processed diatomaceous products.

Compliance standards for respirable dust which are reduced because of high quartz concentrations have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quartz-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may be coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quartz particles of a mine dust are "pure," then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should be lowered. If, however, the quartz is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not be appropriate.

Assessment of abrasivity and cutter life are necessary to properly manage risks when tunneling in mixed face ground which includes ground with cobbles and boulders. Maximizing cutter life requires: (1) abrasivity and strength parameters for soil matrix and rock clasts, (2) methods of combining both, (3) proper selection of cutters and (4) modified TBM operation including use of boulder detection methods from the TBM to help make operation decisions. This paper presents approaches for addressing these factors sufficiently to improve tunneling success in mixed-face and cobbly-bouldery ground. Current laboratory abrasivity testing will be assessed along with equivalent quartz content correlations to soil matrix and rock clast abrasivity. New approaches to combining abrasivity testing of both the soil matrix and rock clasts for various cobble and boulder volume ratios will be suggested to estimate cutter life and intervention intervals. Methods for detecting boulders and using detection data to modify TBM operations to minimize boulder impacts are provided.

Processing of various ores and materials in a reducing atmosphere has been done for many years. However, the typical device currently used is a large, often high maintenance, expensive piece of equipment; the rotary kiln. While it is a very reliable and a proven technology, the rotary kiln also has its limitations. It is limited by its ability to process very fine materials without creating a huge dust loss to the air pollution control equipment. This leads us towards the development of an alternate technology; the Gas Suspension System. Gas suspension preheating of various materials has been in commercial use since the early 1950's, but recently has been expanded to include Gas Suspension Reduction. Laboratory experience has proven successful on several materials; Nickel Laterite Fines, Iron Ore Fines, Fluorspar, and Clays. The gas suspension reduction system has many advantages over the conventional reduction kiln when processing fines. They are; lower cost, more fuel efficient, able to process fines, less real estate required, etc.

The current Canadian coal production is approximately 57x106 tonnes per annum of which some 25 million tonnes is exported. Two thirds of the Canadian output is classified as thermal and one third as coking or metallurgical coal. The Canadian coal industry, like the industries in some other industrialized nations, has gone through a cycle of ups and downs. The current world vide recession and stable oil prices have somewhat dampened the plans for a further growth of this industry - albeit temporarily. No new mines are expected to be developed within the next few years. However the production is projected to increase to 60x106 tonnes in 1985 increasing to an estimated 75 to 80x106 tonnes by 1995. The Canadian mines are highly mechanized and are willing to employ the modern technology to maintain its competitive position in the world's coal market. This paper reviews the recent technical developments which continue to improve resource recovery and productivity.

Total suspended solids (TSS), generally referred to simply as sediment, is one of the four major parameters of water pollution associated with surface mining activities. The other three para¬meters are iron, manganese and pH. Currently the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in the process of developing and implement¬ing effluent limitations for these pollutants pursuant to section 301 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972, 33 USC 1811.1 To date, effluent guidelines for existing point sources have been published, and guidelines for new sources are forthcoming. The effluent limits which have already been developed for TSS have been subjected to some controversy.1 Some industry spokesmen have indicated that they may be unable to meet these effluent limitation guidelines for TSS. The industry claims that in certain areas the suggested limit is unattainable since high suspended solid loads already exist in streams due to numerous and various sources of nonpoint pollution which include agriculture, silviculture and urban construction for which no TSS effluent limits have been set. An opposite viewpoint asserts that the TSS limitations are too lenient since permit data from the Regions (U.S. EPA Regions) indicates present compliance for several companies under more stringent TSS limits. The experience at the Centralia mine in Washington is one example.2

Suboleski and King (1990) analyzed the reasons for the dramatic increase in underground coal mine productivity during the last 10 years. This paper examines whether this increase can be extended. The paper forecasts whether the mix of technological, procedural and other factors that produced the increase will change in the future. The forecast is based on the base case and spreadsheet production model described in the previous paper.

"In underground continuous mining operations, ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded bed scrubbers are the primary means of controlling respirable dust exposures at the working face. Changes in mining arrangements, such as, face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and equipment operator positioning, can impact the ability of dust controls to reduce occupational respirable dust exposures. This study reports and analyzes dust concentrations measured by the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research for both remote-controlled continuous mining machine operators and haulage operators at ten U.S. underground mines. Results of these respirable dust surveys show that continuous miner exposures varied little based on depth of cut, but are significantly affected by ventilation configuration. Haulage operators experienced elevated concentrations in blowing face ventilation. The type of cut influenced exposures, with elevated exposures observed for both continuous miner operators and haulage operators when working in crosscuts driven into, or counter to, the section airflow. Individual cuts are highlighted to demonstrate instances of minimal and excessive dust exposure attributable to particular mining configurations. These findings form the basis of recommendations for lowering face worker respirable dust exposures when performing a variety of continuous mining cuts.INTRODUCTION Underground continuous coal mining operations may encounter a wide range of conditions and arrangements during production and development activities. These activities typically produce respirable coal mine dust, putting operators of continuous mining machines and coal haulers at risk for elevated exposures. In order to comply with federal regulations limiting respirable dust exposures for the duration of a working shift, mine operators typically implement ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded-bed dust collectors (scrubbers) to dilute and control mine dusts during coal cutting. Nevertheless, changes in operational conditions can limit the ability of these controls to effectively reduce dust exposures. Some examples of conditions that can change during the course of mining include face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and operator positioning. Because these arrangements are largely under the control of mine operators, any insight into associated exposures may inform future plans and behaviors, reducing occupational exposures to respirable dust. The objective of this OMSHR study is to evaluate respirable dust exposures associated with a range of continuous mining arrangements by comparing occupational dust concentrations measured during a series of field surveys. These comparisons consider face ventilation configurations, depths of cut, and crosscut mining practices."

Breakthroughs in software technology and in computer hardware capabilities have opened new opportunities to develop more accurate process simulators and to reduce the operating time to reasonable levels. As a result, there are several new simulation packages being commercialized for modeling coal preparation plants and pulverized coal-fired power plants, and the users of these packages are reporting significant improvements in process efficiency and operating costs by implementing the simulators' results. This paper provides an overview of some of the models currently in use at CQ Inc., including the ASPEN PLUS"" Coal Cleaning Simulator, the Ultramax® process optimization software package, and EPRI's Coal Quality Impact Model?. Case histories of specific applications are also presented.

Many states are considering the need to establish or modify policy relating to the disposal of coal ash. One of the primary concerns is the impact of leachate from the ash disposal sites upon groundwater and nearby bodies of surface water. A detailed site investigation was conducted at a coal ash disposal facility associated with a power generation station. The disposal site is situated alongside a major river. Monitoring wells were installed and soil samples were taken for characterization. Groundwater models were used to simulate migration of leachate from the disposal site toward the river. Such models could be used potentially to verify regulatory compliance. This paper addresses the validation and adaptability of these models to this case and their usefulness as possible tools to be used in future environmental audits.

A process was developed to recover coal, clays and pyrite from coal wastes. The process consists of fine grinding followed by coal flotation and pyrite flotation leaving the clays in the flotation pulp. A bituminous coal refuse, containing l0% S-30% C*, was treated by this method to yield a coal product containing 4% sulfur, 10% ash; a pyrite product containing 45% sulfur (84% FeS2), 1% carbonaceous material and a clay product containing 2% sulfur (3.5% FeS2). The coal yield was about 89%. The pyrite yield was about 77%. The process steps may be entirely flotation, or gravity separation (hydrocyclone) may be used to increase the pyrite: coal ratio in the flotation feed. Cost estimation shows a profit of $2.28 per ton of low pyrite grade refuse (Labor, maintenance, overhead and plant depreciation were not included). The development of this process consisted of three parts: 1) exploratory tests, 2) optimization tests and 3) confirmatory tests.

Heap leaching is a simple means of recovering copper from oxide and oxide-sulfide ores. Although this method requires relatively low capital investment, it suffers from low copper recoveries and relatively high acid consumption. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine what factors influence these shortcomings, and (2) to establish a basis of correlation. between laboratory and field testing. The principal methods of leaching copper ores at the present time are heap, dump, in-place, and vat. A number of references are presented in the bibliography on the theoretical and practical aspects of these methods. In the heap-leaching method, crushed or uncrushed oxidized copper ore is placed on a prepared drainage pad. Acid leach solutions are dis¬tributed over the top of the heap, caused to percolate downward through the ore bed by gravity, and are drained from its base. The leach duration is generally a matter of a few months. Dump leaching is used to recover copper from very low-grade oxide-sulfide pit-waste materials. Here again, leach solutions are, percolated downward through a heap. However, in this method, little or no acid is added to the leach liquors, prepared drainage pads are not used and the leaching cycle is generally measured in terms of several years. Leaching agents are usually autogenously generated by the breakdown of sulfide minerals within the dump.

Passive seismic monitoring is a useful tool for measuring wave propagation in rock mass in deep underground mining. About 20000 mining ? induced seismic events of a hard rock mine, are identified and investigated. The travel times of source-receiver pairs allow us to demonstrate temporal change in velocity. It was found that the average P wave velocity is about 6000 m/s in the mining regions. Velocity investigations on the data during about three months around the main shocks show a significant decrease of the average seismic wave velocity after the main shocks. The sudden drop of average velocity change after the main shocks implies the creation of new fractures in the rock mass due to the main shocks. Afterward, the average velocity increased to a normal level after a time duration of several days. A reasonable explanation for the post seismic velocity increase is that opened cracks begin to close due to crack healing.

Discussion by A. Unal Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use their in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 in (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two-seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al. (1990), surprisingly, does not give any geological interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics, It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimental variogram as no spatial correlation. This very well known phenomenon is called the pure nugget effect in geostatistics (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978) and perhaps can explain the lack of correlation found for pyritic sulfur content. The lack of correlation found for the total sulfur content may also be explained in the same way because the total sulfur content is dominated by the pyritic sulfur content in this case study. One should notice, however, that the situation may completely be reversed after cleaning the coal. Not all of the inorganic sulfur should be expected to be in the form of pyrite nuggets in a coal seam. It may also be disseminated in the coal seam and it is expected that it follows a certain spatial structure. However, an existing spatial structure may be masked by including a part of the roof rock, rich in sulfides, into the seam thickness in an arbitrary fashion because areas having a sandstone roof sometimes are known to show a higher sulfur content due to the downward percolation of solutions rich in iron sulfides (Clark, 1979). Plants use sulfur in their growth processes. Much of this sulfur is bound organically during peat accumulation and coal formation (Cecil et al., 1978.) This suggests a spatial structure of some sort for the organic sulfur. However, it is not possible to test this hypothesis because the results obtained by the authors for the organic sulfur content are not given in this paper. For this reason, the conclusion that simple average of the nearby samples would provide the best unbiased estimates is questionable for organic sulfur and is not based on any substantial supporting evidence. It is suspected that no spatial structure was detected and this was due to high sampling and laboratory analysis errors. Before concluding that sulfur variability in the seam at the location of study was random, a more detailed study for the disseminated non-pyritic sulfur should have been conducted, not for the sake of scientific curiosity only, but also due to its utmost importance with regard to coal cleaning and emission control. Pyritic sulfur can be cleaned to a considerable extent, whereas organic sulfur can not, making the emission control strategies highly dependent on the spatial distribution of the organic sulfur (Knudsen, 1981). In the light of these facts, one wonders why Barbaro et al. (1990) did not present the results of their study for the sulfate and organic sulfur content. Virtually all industries use sulphur in some form. About half of the world's production is used in the production of fertilizers. Sulphur is produced in one form or another in over sixty countries in the world. The major producing countries, in order of importance, are: U.S.A., Canada, U.S.S.R., Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, and Spain. Canada is the largest exporter of sulphur presently supplying about 30% of the world elemental sulphur export trade. It has held this position since 1968. World sulphur resources are virtually unlimited. Future world competition will come from Iraq and other Middle East countries as well as Central and South America.

Since undergoing a major mill expansion in 1979, Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Limited has successfully operated a somewhat unconventional rod mill/rod mill grinding circuit at its mill in Tungsten, N.W.T., Canada. The concentrator employs two rod mills in series, of unmatched size and horsepower, for production of feed to a gravity (tabling) circuit. Cyclones and screens are closed circuited with the secondary rod mill. Outlined in this paper are the rationale behind, and consequences of operation of this unusual grinding and classification configuration.

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To simplify the presentation of employed approach's main idea, the given below accepts as its component only one of many actually existing environmental profiles, that define mining pro- cess impact on environmental situation -the size of infringed (de- graded) lithosphere surface. Basically, the actually existed correlation between spheres. grounding the model of sustainable development - economic, environmental and social- is given in a form of nomogram under Fig.1. On the presented graph the prognostic values of broken lands relative extent within Erunakovsky boundary ( to be compared with total region area taken as 100%) are arranged on axis x". Axis "y- demonstrates the main values associated with complete economic background, making the intrinsic part of the principal for sustainable development, i.e. annual coal output for the given area. It's top, used in assessment value relates to actual showings implied for the study region project and quantifies 60 min. tons. In accordance with the cited above the economic level showings are plotted on the graph on "-x” axis, while "-y" one obtains the values associated with the point of ecological comfort presented in conventional units. For the maximum possible conventional point of living (corresponding in nomogram to 1.0 value) a welfare level secured with industrial region economic activity revenue was assumed in case the top planned annual amount of coal is delivered ( 60 min. tons).
