In mechanized tunnelling operations, performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequately dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole project. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer’s point of view.

Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.

The Navajo Mine is exclusively a multiple-seam surface coal mine located in the northwest comer of New Mexico. The property is situated entirely on the Navajo Indian Reservation. It is owned and operated by the Broken Hill Propriety Co. Ltd., of Melbourne, Australia. The mine began production in January 1963 with a long-term fuel supply agreement with the Four Corners power plant. The 2175 MW nominal generating capacity of the Four Corners powerplant consumes 7.2 Mt to 7.7 Mt/a (8 million to 8.5 million stpy) of coal. The Navajo Mine has estimated reserves totaling 1 Gt (1. I billion st) of strip minable coal. Only about one-third of that total is presently committed to the generating station. As development continued over the years, mining operations advanced into more complex geologic areas to satisfy the utility's demand for coal. To optimize the committed reserve and provide competitively priced coal to the customer, the Navajo Mine began developing a new pit in June 1986. The Dixon Pit boxcut development was completed in April 1987. About 6 hm3 (7.9 million cu yd) were stripped, uncovering 929 kt (1 million st) of coal. Strip ratio was 7.74:1 including 36.8% rehandle of prime yardage. This case study of the fourth production cut highlights a variety of dragline stripping techniques including highwall bench (overburden) side cast, intermediate highwall bench (parting-interburden) side cast and spoilside bench (partings-interburden) stripping methods. The Dixon Pit offers considerable challenges in the surface recovery of up to seven seams of coal within the 1432 m (4700 ft) of total pit length.

Productivity is a fascinating concept. Like motherhood or apple pie, we know it as a good thing. Just what it means is not so clear. To a coal miner we assume it means tons of coal hauled from the mine. To the company president it means profit after capital, labor, and other costs have also been reckoned. To the government economist it means output in a balance of payments. What does it mean to the biologist, and can reclamation really be productive? In this paper we discuss productivity from a biological viewpoint, give some yield data for various types of reclamation plantings, and discuss how our demand for or acceptance of differing kinds of productivity is tied up in bigger questions of land use, environmental stability, and resource allocation.

Thiourea is a reagent capable of complexing gold and silver. With the proper oxidant, thiourea can effectively dissolve metallic gold and silver. A thiourea leaching system possesses potential advantages over conventional cyanidation including acidic solutions instead of alkaline, cationic complexes in contrast to metal-cyanide anionic complexes, and faster leaching rates with acidic solution of thiourea. Generally, the rate of metal dissolution in thiourea solutions is fastest when ferric ion is employed as an oxidant. Acidic thiourea solutions for certain applications could offer a nontoxic and noncorrosive option for processing gold and silver. This paper provides information regarding the fundamental chemistry of the acidic thiourea system, and reviews the dissolution of both silver and gold in acidic solutions of thiourea. The recovery of gold and silver from acidic thiourea solution is discussed.

INTRODUCTION In order to understand the transport and deposition of radon daughters in mine atmospheres, it is necessary to know the variation in the attachment of the daughter atoms to particles as a function of particle size, composition, number density, relative humidity, temperature, and radon concentration, the free gaseous diffusion coefficients of the daughters, and the variation in the mass transfer of the activity, both free and attached to particles, to mine surfaces as a function of particle size distribution, surface roughness of the mine walls, and the flow conditions. If all of these parameters are known in a model system, it should be possible to understand the transport and fate of the airborne radioactivity in real mines under certain well-defined flow conditions. There have been a number of recent investigations of the attachment of radon decay products to particles 1-4, but there are still a number of unanswered questions regarding the process. However, it is clear that for most real mine atmospheres, the vast majority of the activity is attached to particles. The size distributions for the activity-bearing airborne particles have been studied 5,6, and it has been found that most of the activity resides on particles with diameters in the range of 0.05 µm to 0.3 µm with an average mass median diameter between 0.1 and 0.2 µm. The behavior of the unattached radon daughter species has also been recently studied[ 7], and many of the previous problems regarding the value of the diffusion coefficient for Po-218 have been resolved. A major problem in the understanding of the airborne transport of radioactivity in mines is the lack of detailed knowledge of mass tranfer to and fluid flow over rough walls under fully developed turbulent flow conditions. This paper will report the progress on a project that is designed to obtained that information. MATHEMATICAL MODEL DEVELOPMENT Deposition of particles on smooth surfaces in turbulent flow has been extensively studied. A comprehensive review of these results has been prepared by Sehmel 8. There has not been such a comprehensive study of particle deposition on rough walls under such flow conditions. In recent years, only a single model has been proposed to explain such deposition 9,10 and in both of these papers the flow structure in the rough walled pipe was not taken fully into account. As part of the work being conducted on this project, a more complete model was outlined in a previous report [11]. The basic theory will be reviewed to provide a context for the flow measurements to be reported. The flux of particle deposited on the walls of a pipe in a turbulent flow is derived from the one dimensional form of Fick's law as given by [N = Dpdpp/dr (1) where N is the flux of particles deposited per unit area per unit time, D is the total eddy diffusivity of the particles, p is the airborne concentration of particles, and pr is the distance measured from the center of the pipe. The rate of deposition is best expressed by a deposition velocity Vp = NIP pb (2) where P b is the mean particle concentration in the sulk flow. The shear radius, V/ut and the shear velocity, u , are used to calculate a nondimensional distance, and velocity, respectively, where v is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. The nondimensional form of equation 1 is given by Vd = DP dpp(3) V dr+ where Pp = Pp/ Ppb(4) By integrating equation 3 from the rough wall stopping distance, S , to the center of the pipe, the deposition velocity can be obtained. In order to make this calculation, it is necessary to have accurate descriptions for the particle eddy diffusivity, stopping distance, and shear velocity in order to insure that the influence of the flow structure has been properly accounted for. Road tunnels in recent infrastructure projects in Sydney, Australia, are designed to have a fire resistance level of either a 4-hour cellulosic fire or a 2-hour hydrocarbon fire. Where permanent ground support for tunnels consists of systematic rock bolts and relatively thin layer of shotcrete, it is important to ensure that during and after the fire event the ground support is designed/predicted not to pose risks to the tunnel occupant. The global behavior of the ground support can be predicted using finite element analysis, and its resistance is derived with consideration of the material strength degradation due to the elevated temperature.

A stable and continuous leaching process for niobium and tantalum extraction from ferrocolumbium tantalum (FT) was developed. The effects of initial concentration of HF and H2SO4, grinding fineness, leaching time, and temperature on the leaching rate of Ta, Nb, Fe, and Si were studied. Experimental results show that the leaching rates of Ta, Nb, Fe, and Si were enhanced by the increase of acid concentrate, fineness, leaching time, and leaching temperature. The optimum process conditions are HF initial concentration of 5 mol/L, H2SO4 initial concentration of 2.5 mol/L, − 74 μm percentage of 65%, leaching time of 20 min, and leaching temperature of 25 °C. Continuous leaching of FT was carried out by feeding ore and acid every 20 min. By leaching with HF − H2SO4 for 4 h, then adding appropriate amount of HNO3 into the solution and keeping for another 1 h, a high Nb extraction rate of 99.8% was achieved. The established method provides a promising technique for the high-efficiency separation of niobium and tantalum from FT.

"Slurry Microtunneling is a well-established technology building on over 20 years of experience in successful tunnel installations under all kinds of soil conditions across the U.S. and Canada. Recent microtunnel installations prove that initial hesitation, e.g. curved drives, is fading and long-distance pipe jacking projects as well as lake outfalls are being considered. One of the younger technologies is Direct Pipe®, which combines the benefits of HDD and Slurry Microtunneling. It fits exactly into the area where HDD is not feasible or too risky to apply. The paper points out the benefits of the Direct Pipe® technology for owners, engineers and contractors and discusses the latest developments of Slurry Microtunneling for long-distance, curved drives and sea/lake outfalls with wet recovery of the equipment such as on the ‘Keswick Outfall Project’ in Ontario. The first Direct Pipe® installation in the US was executed in August 2010. Since then, another 22 crossings have been carried out amongst a total of more than 60 Direct Pipe® crossings worldwide. INTRODUCTION Pipelines installed underground are indispensable for supplying the growing world population with water, oil, gas and electricity, for removing wastewater and for providing functioning telephone and communications networks. During recent years the limits of trenchless applications have been permanently shifted, leading to higher and more stringent project requirements and consequently new technologies, either as further development of existing methods, or through the development of new methods by incorporating elements of proven technologies. MICROTUNNELING TRENDS IN NORTH AMERICA Slurry Microtunneling has a wider geological application range in comparison to EPB and hard rock Microtunneling. The Slurry MTBM can be equipped with specific cutting wheels to cope with different soil conditions. The most flexible and most often employed type is the mixed soil cutting wheel, which contains a mixture of disc cutters as well as scrapers for varying soil conditions from cohesive soils (clay, silts) to highly permeable soils including sands, gravels and cobbles and even hard ground formations such as rock and boulders. A detailed geotechnical report provides the appropriate data to configure the MTBM and its features to the ground conditions expected. Mixshield or hydroshield (AVN/AVND) MTBMs in particular, can be safely operated with little overburden (~ 3-5 x machine diameter) and minimum risk of frac-out or settlement on the surface. This is especially beneficial in urban areas with sensitive buildings or for river crossings with protected fish habitats."

Rio Algom Mines Ltd. owns eight uranium mines and mills in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, seven of which were producing before 1960. At present only one mine is operating meeting current contract requirements. Under present economic conditions, it is not feasible to mine ore of less than 2.0 lbs./ton U308, although there are very large reserves below this grade. We are interested in preconcentration for three possible applications: to extend ore reserves by permitting use of lower grade ore, to reduce costs on processing of present grade ore, and to reduce capital investment in expanding production to meet future production goals.

Ethoxylated phosphoric ester surfactants were evaluated as collectors for flotation of carbonates from sedimentary phosphate ores, at slightly acidic pulp pH, using sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as a phosphate depressant. With 12 to 15 carbon atoms in the hydrophobic chain, maximum collecting power was observed for 9 to 10 ethylene oxide units. Only fine carbonates, ranging in size from about 20 to 160 µm or 40 to 200 µm, were effectively removed with phosphoric ester collectors. Utilization of seawater, or water of extremely high hardness, did not detrimentally affect selectivity. Silica, silicates, and residual fine carbonates can be separated in a second flotation stage, with primary amine as a collector. Coarse carbonates are separated by direct flotation of phosphate with fluoride ion as a phosphate activator and primary amine as a collector. In a seawater pulp, fluoride ion was not required. Typical examples of laboratory and pilot- scale test results are given to illustrate capabilities of the various flotation flowsheets.

The Three Rivers Protection & Overflow Reduction Tunnel is part of the Long-Term Control Plan of the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana (USA). The 4.9 m internal diameter tunnel, of length approximately 7.5 km, is excavated at a depth of approximately 40–60 m through carbonate rocks using a slurry TBM. Due to the high hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass and the high in-situ ground water pressure (up to 6.5 bar), the management of the water inflow during the TBM advance and standstills, represents the major challenge for the project. This paper outlines the geotechnical conditions and the hazards related to the large water inflows expected in the pre-excavation phase and discusses the experience gained during the construction of the first 8,224 feet (2,507 m), (first third of the total length of the tunnel).

Automation is a word whose meaning has been broadened by popular usage to include any labor saving device. We with restrict our usage to the replacement of human judgement by instrumental measurement and mathematical analysis in the control of industrial processes. Mineral concentration is an area which has resisted automation because of the great difficulty in developing measuring instruments which can exist in the rugged environment and can measure useful properties with acceptable accuracy. This is not the only factor limiting progress, but until recently it has been of over-whelming importance. The development of on-stream X-ray analysers, magnetic flowmeters and nuclear density meters for mineral slurries has eliminated this obvious barrier and is enabling us to locate and attack the less obvious problems which still limit our ability to automate concentrators. If we examine the history of automation in industries which are highly automated we find that it has usually gone through three distinct phases. The first phase has been regulation. This is the simplest form of control and involves manipulating some variable whose value is of no importance in order to maintain the value of some other variable which is important at a constant specified value in spite of disturbances which may occur in other variables which affect it. A simple example is the use of a control valve to maintain a constant flow of fluid in a line in spite of changes in pressure in the vessels at the ends of the line. The froth flotation of coal, differing greatly from that of most minerals1-5, is not improved but rather impaired by temperatures higher than room temperature6-10 This phenomenon has long taunted us for an explanation. Gayle and Associates 8,9 reported the lack of relationship between their contact angle measurements and their flotation of American coals under various temperatures. Bailey and Whelan6 stated that the viscosity of flotation reagents, offering some clue for their flotation of British coals at low temperatures, could not be put forward as an explanation either in whole or in part for the effect of temperatures on coal-flotation. In this paper, a froth hypothesis is proposed to explain the flotation behavior of coals under various pulp temperatures. Test work involved the flotation of coals and the frothing of reagents.

This paper presents the results of Caldagi Nickel-Cobalt Ore Deposit's, located in Turkey, reserve and ultimate pit limit design analysis. Reserve analysis of any deposit requires two steps. First one is to constitute of block model of the deposit and second step is to generate ultimate pit limit. The block model of the Caldagi ore deposit has been created by means of geostatistics. The reserves of nickel and cobalt in this block model are defined as resource, approximately 12 million tons of nickel and 1 million tons of cobalt with average grades of 0.9% Ni and 0.03% Co, respectively. Ultimate pit limit analysis has been performed by considering economic, technical and legal factors. In this paper, the ultimate pit limits are generated by Lerchs & Grossmann (L&G) algorithm. As a consequence of ultimate pit limit design, total amount of tonnage to be excavated is 1.4 billions of tons, 700 million of which contains ore and 747 million of which is the tonnage of waste.

Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

The global mining industry will always face significant challenges. Some, though, are bigger than others. What do you consider the major challenges facing the mining industry as a whole and SME in particular? Without a doubt, the major issue in both coal and metal/nonmetal mining industries is the ?graying? of the workforce in all aspects of mining. As the baby boomers continue to age, valuable experience is being lost by industry, government and academia. And there is the potential for SME to lose some of its membership. Now with that said, I should note that, despite the aging of the workforce, SME membership continued to grow by 7.1 percent during 2011.

This paper presents a successful case history of the ground improvement efforts and excavation of twenty-three cross passages between twin bore tunnels driven by EPB tunneling machines in Los Angeles, California on Section 1 of the Westside Subway Extension. Unique and complicated ground conditions local to the tunnel alignment include San Pedro sands, siltstone/claystone Fernando Formation, and zones of “asphalt impacted soils.” To provide water cut-off and soil stabilization, jet grouting was performed prior to TBM excavation at the location of many of the cross passages. However, upon investigating the cross passages prior to excavation, the subsurface conditions required additional measures and SEM tools to ensure successful completion of the project.

The total amount of ferrous slag generated in the U.S. is about one-third the amount of iron ore mined, thus ferrous slag can be considered a significant mineral body for processing. Steelmaking slag contains up to 30 wt.% metal of which only the >25mm fraction is commonly recovered. A grinding study was conducted of BOF, EAF, and LMF slags using the Bond Work Index method to determine grindability to 106µm. Work Index values obtained were 13.8-24.9 kWh/ST, depending upon the slag type and composition. Steel particles were magnetically recovered from the crushed and ground samples for size-by-size analysis, yielding up to 18 wt.% of the slag weight recovered as magnetic. The recovered material, as characterized by inert gas melting, was found to be 61-96 wt.% metallic.

The effect of cooling rate on the flotation behaviour of copper slags of flash smelter plant in Samsun was investigated. Fresh molten slag was solidified in laboratory scale in three different ways. All the samples were characterized by chemical and mineralogical analyses. The chemical analyses showed that samples prepared from fresh slag had 0.9 to 1 % Cu with 40 % Fe and 30 to 32 % SO2. Old pit slag samples contained between 1 to 3% copper. Microphotographs showed that rapidly cooled slags showed fine size distributions, e.g. the copper grains in granulated slag had sizes in 1-2 microns. On the other hand, the size of copper grains in slowly cooled slags increased above 40 microns. Flotation tests carried out by using potassium amyl xanthate and Flotanol-C showed that slowly cooled slag reduced the copper losses in the tailing and improved the grade of concentrate. Under the light of laboratory investigation, the pit dimensions of Samsun Plant have been modified which resulted in a pronounced improvement of the grade and recovery of concentrate produced at Samsun slag flotation circuit.
