Hecla?s Lucky Friday Mine is a deep, underground producer of silver, lead and zinc in the Coeur d?Alene mining district of northern Idaho. Main access into, and production from, the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk by J.S. Redpath to an original depth of 1,890 m (6,200 ft) in the early 1980s. The shaft is divided into four compartments (Fig. 1), with sets made of 225 mm x 175 mm (9 in. x 7 in.) hollow structural section (HSS) steel buntons and 150-mm x 150-mm (6-in. x 6-in.) HSS dividers spaced every 4.5 m (15 ft) down the length of the shaft. Two skip compartments on the east side of the shaft are equipped with 125-mm x 150-mm (5-in. x 6-in.) HSS steel guides and 9-t (10-st) skips with three deck trailer cages for men and materials. The west side of the shaft is divided into a manway, and a fourth compartment that was originally designed for a service cage. Shaft services consist of a 250-mm (10-in.) a compressed air line and 150-mm (6-in.) sandfill line along the south side of the shaft, and 250-mm (10-in.) discharge (gray) water and 150 mm (6 in.) fresh water lines on the north wall. The mine?s primary 13.8 kV power lines, as well as communication lines are located on the west wall of the shaft. The production hoist is a 3.7-m (12-ft) diameter, double drum, double clutch, 2,238 kW (3,000 hp), direct current unit equipped, at the time, with thyristor drives. The 30-year-old drives would prove to be problematic during the rehabilitation project, leading to an upgrade to modern ABB drives later in the project, after the shaft rehabilitation was complete. The shaft had been subjected to the typical wear and tear of 30 years of operation, including intermittent sandfill and muck spills, and, in the lower areas, some corrosion. During those 30 years, the west compartment, originally designed for the service cage, could only be accessed from a work deck on top of the skips or from the manway.

After almost 60 years of application in this country froth flotation is still by far the most important process for concentrating metallic ores as well as a number of nonmetallic ores including fluorspar, phosphate rock, and potash. Its use on iron ores and coal is increasing. In the metals groups the largest plants and the greatest progress are found in copper and molybdenum mills, and the section of this paper that deals with applications will be found most pertinent to that field. During its long reign the flotation process has passed through several phases of evolution and has achieved progress in economy, efficiency, and simplicity of operation. Much of today's success in the flotation of low-grade ores can be attributed to that progress. Even more important to us than our ability to cope with today's conditions are tomorrow's problems, which we can contemplate with some prescience and confidence. Our annual production of copper, lead, zinc, and molybdenum--to mention only the most important metals occurring in the U.S. as sulphides--must be held at a high level in the face of a declining grade of ore. It is probable that the tonnage of such ores mined and processed will double in this country before the turn of the century. Not only will many of the existing flotation mills be enlarged again and again, but larger mills will be built here and abroad to meet our needs. At this moment, in fact, there are at least three proposed new foreign mills or expansions that envision 100,000 tons daily milling rate on copper ores. "The Sistema de Potabilización Área Norte project (Northern Area Purification System) was a major expansion of the potable water system in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The aim of the project was to transport and purify raw water from the Paraná River to provide potable water for five communities in the northern part of the province, benefitting up to two million people. The project was constructed by a joint venture (JV) of four South American contractors and consisted of the following key components:• Treatment plant: A 16-ha (39-acre) area was cleared for the construction of a treatment plant to purify 900,000 m3/day (1.2 million cu ft/d) of raw water from the Paraná River and distribute it to the surrounding communities.• Bored tunnel: Nearly 15 km (9 miles) of 3.6 m (12 ft) inner diameter tunnel, ranging from 18 to 22 m (59 ft to 72 ft) below grade, was bored with two earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) to draw the raw water from the river. The TBMs started from a central launch shaft and proceeded in opposite directions. Cristina advanced northbound to the Paraná River Intake System, and Liliana advanced southbound to the new treatment plant.• Access and ventilation shafts: Five access shafts and eight ventilation shafts were installed along the length of the tunnel. The access shafts were designed to provide entry points for inspection and maintenance of the final tunnel. The five shafts consisted of one central launch shaft in the middle of the tunnel alignment, one retrieval shaft at each end of the tunnel (intake and treatment plant, respectively) and two intermediate shafts. The intermediate shafts were installed before the TBM passed, with a final liner to be installedafterward."

Natural materials can be used successfully in the construction of heap leach pads. The use of these materials usually result in the least expensive approach for such facilities. Sufficient geotechnical experience has been gained in the design and construction of clay heap leach pads so that they can be used with confidence. A number of operators presently use clay pads in their heap leach facilities; these include Alligator Ridge, Ely, Nevada (gold), and Union Carbide, Gas Hills, Wyoming (uranium). This paper describes the construction and field investigation of a clay pad for the heap leaching of agglomerated precious tailings. The project is located in the Mojave Desert, Southern California. The design had to satisfy operational requirements as well as regulatory requirements. The California Water Quality Control Board (WQCB) was one of the agencies which had to issue a permit for the project. Their biggest concern was the discharge or escape of cyanide into the environment. Rather stringent requirements were therefore placed on the pad design criteria, especially in terms of permeability.

Specific software tools for Statistical Multivariate Analysis combined with real time process data were applied to Concentrator Plant at Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi SCM in Chile, basically to two Mill Lines, each one with one SAG mill (32’x15’8MW)and one Ball mill (22’x36’9.7MW). The main objective was to empower the operator actions using process patterns references instead of process variable set-points. Pattern clustering and the analysis of pattern deviations regarding normal or desired pattern, allows for improvements in process control and the further implementation of soft sensors for those variables not included in the initial model.

In a fully mechanized top coal caving mining process, the mechanical properties of the top coal deteriorate constantly, and the stability of the support is determined by the boundary position of the top coal entering the limit equilibrium state. Top coal flaking occurs more easily along the advancing direction owing to an increase in the distance of the boundary from the wall. Moreover, the strength of the coal seam is an important factor that determines the boundary position. The equation of the top coal limit equilibrium zone boundary, used in fully mechanized top coal caving mining, was determined based on the limit equilibrium theory, continuum damage mechanics, and the Hoek–Brown rock empirical strength criterion. Using the RFPA3D and UDEC numerical analysis methods, the effect of top coal strength on the mechanical behavior during the mining process was determined; and the space–time relationship between the top coal deformation failure, damage evolution, and boundary of the limit equilibrium zone was established. The results revealed that when the coal mass entered the limit equilibrium zone, accelerated crack development, accelerated damage, and axial unloading occurred. Moreover, an increase in the coal seam strength caused the boundary of the top coal limit equilibrium zone to be closer to the wall. By comparing the numerical results with the theoretical results, the overall trend was found to be consistent, allowing the verification of the rationality and reliability of the determination equation of the boundary position of the limit equilibrium zone.

Toronto Tunnel Partners (TTP), under contract to Metrolinx/IO, is constructing new twin rail tunnels under the Highway 401 & 409 interchange to accommodate additional tracks to support the GO Expansion program for future two-way, all-day service. The new tunnels are being constructed using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) and utilize a tunnel pre-support system consisting of a series of 800 mm diameter steel pipes to form a pipe canopy. The pre-support pipes were installed with an Auger Boring Machine (ABM) in four separate headings; one heading from each of the tunnel end portals, and two from a shaft in the middle of the highway. To facilitate the auger boring operation, a custom steel reaction frame was required to counteract the thrust from the ABM at the portals, and a temporary shaft structure was installed in a narrow median space of the highway. The installation of the pipe canopy had to overcome challenges including removal of obstructions, alignment issues, and controlling settlements to the highway surface. This paper discusses the purpose of the pipe canopy, design and installation of the temporary shaft and structures to support the auger boring operation, the experience of the contractor during the installation of the pipes, and brief overview of the experience tunneling below the pipes.

Metal complexed cyanides in wastewaters form as a result of interactions of free cyanide with metals present in the wastewater and exhibit varying degrees of stability, toxicity, and treatability. Thiocyanate, a pollutant commonly found in cyanide bearing wastewaters, is formed through the interaction of free cyanide with sulfur containing species (i. e. pyrrhotite) both present in the wastewater. In certain industrial processes, such as the beneficiation of gold and silver, cyanide is an essential reagent. Since free cyanide, complexed cyanides, and thiocyanate are potentially toxic to humans and aquatic organisms, these compounds must be removed from wastewaters prior to their discharge into surface or ground waters serving as potential potable water sources, marine or fresh water habitats

The paper addresses heat stress in underground coal mines, which poses significant threats to miners’ health, safety, and productivity. It involves a comprehensive ventilation survey in three deep and mechanized underground coal mines in India. Using VentSim software, 3D simulation models were developed to predict heat stress conditions and explore the application of auxiliary ventilation and spot coolers to reduce heat stress.

Lignite reserves occur all over the world in different climatic regions. This means, that the impact of the hydrologic regime upon mining activities and, vice versa, of the mining activities upon ground and surface water conditions will be different between any two mines. On the other hand, most economically important lignite deposits can be grouped according to principal depositional and structural features described briefly in the following section. These features do allow a preliminary assessments of the nature of ground water problems which may face the mine. The cost of protection against water which threatens a mine, the environmental impact of the appropriate measures to achieve this end and the restraints of population density which both might exclude the most cost-effective approach will govern the project expenditure for drainage work. Whether or not this expenditure can be borne by the project must be established during the feasi¬bility phases of mine planning. So, the somewhat provoking title of this paper does not mean that its question can be answered once for ever. It should rather serve to bring to the attention of the audience the major features of mine water control.

Carbonaceous gold ores containing gold dispersed in sulfides are refractory to cyanidation because: ( 1) the carbonaceous materials adsorb gold during cyanidation; (2) a portion of the gold is so finely dispersed in the sulfide mineral lattice as to preclude contact with cyanide solution; and (3) a portion of the gold is chemically combined with carbonaceous material. Techniques which have been used to treat these ores are: (1) roasting or chemical oxidation to decompose sulfides and carbonaceous materials; (2) flotation to reject carbon; (3) the use of kerosene or other reagents to passivate the adsorptive carbon compounds; (4) carbon or resin in pulp; (5) flotation of a bulk concentrate which is treated by one of the above methods; and (6) the use of chelating agents which have a stronger affinity for gold than the activated carbon in the ore.

"Cyanide heap leaching of gold ores in areas with extremely low winter temperatures requires special considerations to prevent freezing of the leach solution. Factors that impact the solution temperature include ore temperature at the time of stacking and during operation, burial of drip irrigation lines, use of geomembrane covers and heating of the leach solution. Thermodynamic modeling was performed to simulate expected ore and solution temperatures under different operating strategies for Kaminak Gold’s Coffee gold project in the Yukon Territory. Mean monthly temperatures at the site ranged from a low of -22.5 °C (-8.5 °F) to a high of 13.6 °C (56.4 °F), while in situ ore temperatures ranged from -0.5° to about -1.5 °C (31 ° to 29 °F). The modeling results were used to optimize the operational parameters and indicated that a combination of drip line burial and heating of the leach solution during the winter months was required to maintain solution temperatures above freezing during the initial years of stacking, although as the size of the heap increased, heating was no longer necessary.Modeling objectivesThe successful operation of a cyanide heap leach under extremely cold winter temperatures requires the implementation of operational strategies to prevent freezing of the leach solution and the ore within the heap. Thermodynamic modeling of the heap provides the means to quantify the effectiveness of these different operational parameters on maintaining the required operating temperatures to avoid freezing within the heap. This paper highlights the use of an innovative mine production scheduling scheme for grade-control planning tasks that take into consideration grade-model uncertainty. The scheduling exercise has been carried out with the help of a multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGa) for the production scheduling operations. The underlying motive behind the use of MOGa has been the generation of a set of pareto optimal solutions to meet the goals of the target-grade specifications for the considered multiple grade attributes. Several new concepts related to MOGa formulation, in particular the mutation operation and the convergence criteria of this algorithm, are proposed in this paper. The modeling of grade uncertainty into the scheduling outputs has also been incorporated through a set of conditional simulated grade maps. The proposed scheme of production scheduling operations has been applied for the grade-control planning operations in an iron ore mine to meet the targeted grade specifications of iron, silica and alumina, and a risk analysis has been performed to this end.

"In April 2016, MSHA began requiring the use of continuous personal dust monitors (cPDMs) to monitor and measure respirable mine dust exposures to underground coal miners. After the cPDM’s implementation, mine operators discovered that it interfered with proximity detection systems (PDSs), thus exposing miners to potential striking and pinning hazards from continuous mining machines. NIOSH was sought out by MSHA and mining industry stakeholders to determine how the cPDM and PDS interact with each other. Accordingly, NIOSH investigated existing standards, developed test protocols, designed experiments, and conducted lab evaluations. Some interferences were observed to be caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the cPDM. Results showed that there was no significant interference when the cPDM and the miner-wearable component of the PDS were separated by distances of 6 inches or greater. In this study, the cPDM and PAD needed to be at least 6 inches apart in order for them to be used simultaneously and reduce interference potential. INTRODUCTION Underground coal miners are exposed to a variety of hazards on a daily basis such as coal dust exposure, high noise levels, roof and rib falls, the potential for fires and explosions, and operating and working with heavy machinery. One of the hazardous jobs is operating or working nearby a continuous mining machine (CMM). According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics, 40 miners have been fatally struck or pinned by a CMM since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems have been developed and are required on all operating CMMs in underground coal mines, with the exception of full-face CMMs, by 2018 (1,2). Proximity detection systems (PDSs) are designed to alarm miners and stop machine motion in order to protect miners from being struck, pinned or crushed by CMMs(3). Currently, MSHA-approved PDSs, installed on CMMs, are based on the principle of magnetic flux density (B-field) (4,5). The system generates a magnetic field around a CMM and determines the relative distance a miner is from the CMM based on a detected magnetic flux density. A PDS typically consists of multiple magnetic field generators mounted at different places around the CMM, and personal alarm devices (PADs), which are worn by the miners to detect the magnetic flux density. When a miner, wearing a PAD, gets closer to the machine, the PAD detects a stronger magnetic field from the generators and detects a weaker magnetic field when a miner moves away from the machine. The magnetic field generators installed on CMMs typically produce modulated magnetic wave signals at frequencies between 10 kHz and 120 kHz. The magnetic fields are measured by three small magnetic coil antennas mounted on orthogonal axes inside of the PAD worn by the miner. According to Faraday’s Law, the changing magnetic field induces a voltage in each coil antenna, and the voltage values are transmitted from the PAD back to a controller on the CMM wirelessly, typically at a frequency between 400 MHz and 2.5 GHz. These values are then used to determine the distance between the miner and the generators of the machine. Typically this information is used to determine when a miner wearing a PAD is in a warning zone or stop zone which would trigger different alarms and actions such as slowing the machine down or stopping it."

A study of coal pillar strength at the Beehive Mine in central Utah was done in the 1970s. This study was a cooperative effort by the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Mine measurements of closure at 117 points and pillar stress using 119 vibrating wire stress gauges were made during retreat mining in this room-and-pillar operation. Laboratory testing for the strength and modulus of 372 coal cylinders up 0.3 m (1 ft) in diameter and 0.6 m (2 ft) in length was also done. Two-dimensional finite element model analyses complemented the study. However, the real world of mining is three-dimensional and in consideration of the significant advances in computing power since the time of the original study, a revisit of the data seemed warranted. In this regard, a novel finite element method was used that allows for the whole-mine analysis of tabular excavations on the kilometer scale and yet enables details to be obtained at pillar walls on the meter scale. The effects of material properties variability in situ and of joints can also be taken into account. Results that compare computed two- and three-dimensional seam-level closures with mine measurements show noticeable differences; three-dimensional results are reasonable, while two-dimensional results overestimate closure by nearly a factor of two.

A petrographic study was made of the type and sources of mineral contamination occurring on phosphate rock products from Florida. Emphasis was placed on contaminants in the screened rock (+1 mm) since this portion of the product undergoes no physical beneficiation except for scrubbing to remove slimes. Since iron and aluminum con- tent of the finished product affect the salability, special emphasis was placed on identifying types and sources of these contaminants and relating chemical composition to visual characteristics. Wavellite derived from the overburden was the major aluminum contaminant with some aluminum being included as secondary clayballs. Iron occurred as phosphates in the overburden, and as colloidal oxides included in the phosphate pebbles. Chert and limestone contamination were derived from the Hawthorne formation underlying the phosphate matrix.

In situ mining is emerging as a potential alternative to conventional surf ace and underground mining techniques. A major factor in determining recoveries by in situ mining is the proportion of ore minerals that can be contacted and solubilized by the leach solutions. To provide basic information on the processes occurring during in situ leaching, particularly at the microscopic scale, the Bureau of Mines has developed a geologic characterization research program. This includes laboratory experiments using leaching apparatus that can accommodate whole core samples. Whole core experiments result in higher leach solution-ore mineral contact ratios than packed column experiments, and also allow for the assessment of permeability changes taking place as the result of mineral dissolution, precipitation, and clay swelling within the flow channels in the rock. A nonreactive, reusable reaction cell has been designed and tested. The leaching apparatus can be used for constant-pressure or constant-flow experiments and allows for the control of flow rate, pressure, and temperature during the experiments, thus permitting studies on a wide variety of ore samples. Details of the experimental apparatus and design are presented, as well as preliminary results from the first series of experiments on an oxide copper ore from the Casa Grande, AZ, area.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project located in Doha Qatar, was designed to collect and manage ground and stormwater and then discharge the treated waters offshore. The project constructed a long outfall tunnel using an EPB TBM with segmental lining, each tunnel ring being 1.35 m in length with an internal diameter of 3.7 m.. The diffuser structure was a 6-arm structure, measuring 294m by 40 m connected to a central manifold in turn connected to the TBM constructed tunnel via a riser shaft drilled from an off-shore barge. This technical paper will discuss the planning, methodology and construction practices employed to connect the TBM tunnel to the diffuser structure 10.2 km offshore.

An entirely new level of magnetic filtration technology was put into full commercial production by the kaolin industry of Georgia, U.S.A. during 1973-1974. At present, four kaolin producers in Georgia are operating large magnetic filters each capable of processing over 1000 gallons of kaolin slurry per minute or over 65 tons of kaolin per hour on a dry basis. A fifth large filter will go on stream in August, 1975. Four of these units are 84" machines manufactured by the Pacific Electric Motor Company of Oakland, California. When operated at the maximum 1000 g, p. m. rate, these five large magnetic filters have a combined capacity approximating the entire waterwashed coating and filler kaolin produced in the U.S.
