The Tertiary Silverton caldera collapsed asymmetrically to the southwest 27.5 m.y. ago. Resurgent volcanic activity is expressed by a quartz-monzonite stock at the southern caldera margin and by the Red Mountain porphyry stock in the northwest of the caldera which were emplaced at 25 m.y. and 11 m.y. b.p., respectively. The apical Eureka graben formed between 27.5-22.5 m.y. ago and transects the Silverton caldera southwestward. In the northeast it terminates at the 22.5 m.y. Lake City caldera margin. This graben as well as caldera faults provide dominant structural control for base and precious metal deposits. The epithermal gold mineralization of the Gold King mine is proximal to the Red Mountain stock in the north central part of the caldera. Here, west-northwest striking faults related to the collapse of the caldera intersect northeast faults of the Eureka graben. Superimposed upon earlier base metal mineralization at 23 to 22.5 m.y. b.p., the 11 m.y. younger gold metallization was a distinct event at Gold King. Supergene enrichment of the hypogene precious metal assemblage resulted in a metal tenor of up to 3,016 g/t gold and 1,088 g/t silver. The deposit is hosted by quartz-latite tuffs, flows, and flow breccias of the Burns Formation. Veins, up to 5 m wide follow steeply southeast and northwest dipping structures of the Eureka graben. Subsidiary veins up to 2 m wide branch off the main lode and are termed "flat veins" because of their conformable strike but shallow dip of 45' to 50' toward the northwest. A new suspension electrolysis method has been developed, which enables without any gas or dust pollutants a direct anodic extraction of zinc from zinc sulfide concentrates, while simultaneously oxidizing sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur. The investigations were performed in a laboratory scale electrolytic cell with suspended zinc sulfide concentrate particles with or without graphite powder additions in dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. By regulating the redox potential of the electrolysis system in combination with some additions, for example [Fe3+/Fe2+, MnO 4/MnO2, MnO 2/Mn2+ or MnO 4/Mn2+], the anodic dissolution reaction of zinc sulfide has been accomplished effectively without evolution of hydrogen sulfide. Under optimum conditions the anodic current efficiency of zinc dissolution ammounted up to 95 %, while sulfide sulfur was converted nearly completly to the elemental form. Purification by removal of sulfur and other impurities gives a zinc sulfate solution suitable for electrolysis to cathode zinc.

A new pillar strength formula is presented, incorporating a function P of size and shape, which takes into account the size-shape interaction effect as well as the enhanced strength exhibited by wide pillars. Existing pillar formulas, lacking these capabilities, are not suitable for extrapolating small-specimen test results to mine-pillar sizes and shapes. Interpreting compressive-strength test results as function of P clearly reveals wide-pillar behavior in much old test data. Model relationships are discussed, along with their scaling implications.

There are three parties to the oil imports controversy: the domestic oil producers, whose side has just been ably summarized by Mr. Jameson; the oil importers; and the public. Domestic producers and importers are both motivated by economic self-interests, that is by their natural and legitimate desire for profit maximization, in their respective positions. Thus, domestic producers, rightly, regard every barrel of imported crude oil (with the exception of some specialty crudes) as a displacement of a barrel of their own crude. Hence, the lower the import Level the better they like it. Conversely, U .S. refiners whose plants are located at the seaboard or at certain inland waterways generally welcome a higher level of imports because refiner profits are based primarily on the spread between the crude oil price and the refined products price, since crude oil represents by far the refiner?s largest cost factor. The relatively low cost of foreign oil means therefore higher profits to those refiners able to process such oil, This applies particularly to integrated companies whose own domestic oil production is insufficient, to meet their refinery requirements but who have developed ample low-cost foreign oil supplies.

Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger mines have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.

Minewater from many western U.S. uranium mines often contains radioisotopes in concentrations higher than permissible for discharge to unrestricted areas. .Radium 226 has the lowest permissible concentrations of all radioisotopes and usually greatly exceeds this limit in untreated effluents. This radionuclide is derived from the natural radioactive decay of uranium: [ ] The treating of minewater effluents has been studied previously (1) and the classical removal method for radium has been adsorption on barytes or freshly precipitated barium sulfate. This paper describes the removal of radium from minewater by utilizing a selective complexer based on a crosslinked organic polymer matrix.

Long tunnels with only one access shaft pose many program problems for logistics, combine these with the requirement to drive directly out under the seabed for 10.2 km, and the program issues become even more challenging. The Musaimeer outfall tunnel was one such tunnel and to meet and eventually improve on the planned completion date required a complex and extensive management of all tunnel logistics required to support consistent tunneling for a two-year period. This technical paper will discuss the management issues and solutions implemented to meet the challenges of the Outfall tunnel construction.

Method - A direct approach to instrument users, initially by letter and later by telephone or personal contact was made. The resultant data was compiled to give specific use information on the seven instruments. During the course of the study attempts to evaluate the Griswold Gage were abandoned when it became apparent that the gage was not being commercially produced. One company is developing the gage for its own use. The information presented is the result of over 1200 inquiries.

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). "Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust. Not only does quartz have many valuable industrial applications, it is also one of the most concentrated gangue minerals encountered in the processing of other minerals. Minerals such as hematite, apatite, calcite, feldspar, barite, and many more. Numerous applications of industrial minerals are sensitive to the hardness and abrasiveness encountered with quartz minerals, while other applications may lead to processing challenges for the end user. Therefore, process and chemistry optimization must be applied to ensure optimal grade is obtained for these valued industrial minerals. Extensive studies have been conducted in processing various industrial minerals, thus achieving a range of quality specifications, which entailed the application of ArrMaz’s CustoFloat and CustAmine collectors towards the separation of quartz from other minerals. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals often have the misfortune of the gangue mineral being very similar in surface charge, and coordination properties, to that of the mineral of interest. An example is seen in phosphate beneficiation, when dolomite can be a gangue minerals (Table 1). Therefore, the development of processing reagents are quite complicated. Some minerals, like clays, may be washed away. However, most require the manipulation of the pH, in efforts to fine tune the system to the narrow difference in isoelectric points of the different minerals, as well as the knowledge, and resources that are necessary to exploit the differences to yield and an optimal grade/recovery. In some cases, the application of a depressant may be required, such as the phosphoric acid commonly applied to achieve the optimal balance of grade/recovery for phosphate from a mineral with elevated concentrations of dolomite (Wang, 2016), or the application of hydrofluoric acid to assist in producing feldspar product from a mineral rich in quartz (Heyes, 2012).ArrMaz's CustoFloat and CustAmine product lines have successfully been applied to the processing of industrial minerals for more than 50 years. Applications include, but not limited to phosphate, sand (glass, foundry & high purity quartz), clays (feldspar, kaolin, etc.), and many carbonaceous and sulfate minerals. The successes of these 50 years are largely due to ArrMaz's ability to tailor make the processing chemistries to fit the ever changing and declining mineral feed grade and variations in water quality (Moore, 2015; Moore, 2016). This technical knowledge of mineral processing is strongly complimented by the intimate service programs in place at many of the beneficiation plants."

Arch Mineral has developed several computer programs that aid the surface mine planning function. These programs are utilized to perform long term projections for various area or semi-area stripping operations. The program generated reports include yardage, tonnage, quality and ratio information for the user-specified time periods. The projections are used to anticipate the annual budget, to compare alternative mine plans and to analyze acquisition candidates. The programs are user friendly, fast and accurate. Geological Grid File Two data files must be set-up and used in conjunction with the mine planning programs. These are a geological data file and a general input file.

"The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered more than 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the United States. The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Co. (Fig. 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 t/day (800 stpd) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut-and-fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas.This article describes the methods that Hecla Mining Co. has employed during the past 50 years to combat these issues, with emphasis on the current efforts to implement continuous, mechanical mining with automated or teleremote operation and to introduce electric and battery-powered equipment to minimize refrigeration and ventilation requirements for the removal of DPMs.Geology and in situ stressThe host rock mass is an extremely thick sedimentary sequence (the Belt Series) that has been tilted vertically by mountain building. The rock mass in the current section of the mine consists of weak, heavily foliated argillites and stronger, bedded silty-argillites termed siltite. The vertical veins (80° to 85° dip) are parallel to the foliation with an approximate width of around 3 m (10 ft). There are two regional, vertical faults that parallel the vein; one forming the hangingwall of the orebody and one approximately 90 m (300 ft) in the footwall. Additionally, there are several thin, rough northdipping faults that occur in the footwall of the vein which terminate on the major vertical faults.Both the argillite and vein package rock have moderate strength, with uniaxial compressive strength averaging about 100 MPa (14,700 psi with a range from about 70 to 125 MPa), and are moderately abrasive, with CERCHAR abrasivity index of 2 to 3. The major in situ stress is horizontal and oriented in a northwest direction with magnitude about 1.5 times the vertical stress. Consequently, the Lucky Friday stress magnitude at depth is analogous to significantly deeper South African gold operations."

The Relief Canyon gold deposit is located approximately twenty- four kilometers east of the town of Lovelock in Northwestern Nevada. At Relief Canyon, the Late Triassic Grass Valley Formation has been thrust over the Late Triassic Natchez Pass Formation. The lower plate Natchez Pass Formation is composed of massive gray dolomitic limestone which is locally silty and sandy. The upper plate Grass Valley Formation is composed of shale, siltstone, argillite and quartzite. Gold mineralization at Relief Canyon occurs along the highly brecciated thrust contact between these two formations. Weak gold mineralization often occurs above the thrust in the Grass Valley Formation, however, most of the ore grade mineralization is present below the thrust in the brecciated Natchez Pass Formation or where the two formations are mixed as a result of movement along the thrust. Several types of gold mineralization have been recognized at Relief Canyon. A large amount of the ore is present as a jasperoid breccia, however, significant amounts of ore occur as a mixed breccia composed of upper plate rock, fresh limestone, clay and jasperoid breccia. Gold ore also occurs in a fresh limestone breccia which contains a large amount of clay. Below masses of jasperoid, jasperoid stringers containing gold extend into the fresh limestone. Gold mineralization at Relief Canyon appears to be truly disseminated and has the typically associated trace elements of arsenic, antimony, mercury and fluorine. The Relief Canyon deposit can be classified as a structurally controlled disseminated gold deposit. Other deposits that fit this classification are the Pinson and Dee gold mines.

The Sixteen-to-One Mine was originally designed and operated using Blasthole Stoping with end slicing as the primary mining method. This method changed to Modified VCR Stoping in response to efforts to control dilution. The new method combines Blasthole Stoping with shrinkage methods, pillars, and reduced sublevel intervals to provide the most practical dilution control avail- able for low cost bulk mining.

"DC Water’s First Street Tunnel (FST) is part of the $2.6 billion Clean Rivers Project designed to reduce the occurrence of combined sewer overflows into local waterways. Due to flood events in the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park neighborhoods, the FST Project was accelerated by DC Water to mitigate future flooding by boosting storage capacity and thus relieving the undersized combined sewers.The FST Project was finalized in 2016 as a collaborative effort between DC Water, its consulting team consisting of Greeley & Hansen and McMillen Jacobs Associates, and the design-build team of Skanska, Jay Dee Contractors (SKJD) with WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff as the designer.Scope of project. The FST Project (Fig. 1) included four primary shaft sites, a large 6 m (20 ft) internal diameter, 823- m (2,700-ft) long bored tunnel and three adit connections from the off-line shafts to the large-diameter tunnel. The adits which vary in size and length, are the subject of this article. The Channing Street site (Fig. 2) was established as the main site for an Earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) and included a 49-m (160-ft) deep shaft with slurry wall support of excavation and 20-m (65-ft) internal diameter final cast-in-place permanent concrete liner. The construction sites at Adams Street, V Street and Thomas Street each consisted of off-line shaft structures tied to near-surface sewer diversion chambers and ventilation facilities. These three off-line shafts were connected to the large bored TBM tunnel via adit tunnels. Each of the three adits had a portion or the entire length excavated by sequential excavation method (SEM) in frozen ground.The Adams Street adit (Fig. 3) was constructed in two phases. The first phase is the 23-m (75-ft) long and 5-m (16-ft) diameter section immediately outside the drop shaft which also serves as the deaeration chamber and was excavated by SEM. The second phase which is 91 m (300 ft) long and 3 m (10 ft) in diameter was excavated by Micro TBM (MTBM) launched from within the permanently lined deaeration chamber. MTBM excavation commenced toward a reception chamber that was excavated by SEM from the previously bored FST TBM tunnel. This SEM excavation had a 5 m (17 ft) diameter and a length of 4.5 m (15 ft)"

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. Extracting lunar ice, to be processed into pure water or hydrolyzed into oxygen and hydrogen, faces many challenges. On the Moon icy-regolith deposits that contain up to 10% water are found within Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSR) at both lunar poles, where temperatures approach -220 ⁰C. NASA has identified several technology gaps that exist in developing these resources including: • Excavating large quantities of icy-regolith • Delivering large quantities of acquired resources • Hardware that is lightweight and energy efficient • Hardware that is reliable and durable. NASA uses public challenges to incentivize innovative approaches to closing these gaps. The Break the Ice Lunar Challenge provides over three million dollars in prize money to teams that compete in developing solution to mining the Moon. This paper describes the rules for this challenge and presents some of the proposed solution.

Minnesota contains a major low- grade copper-nickel sulfide resource within the Duluth Gabbro Complex. Several companies have actively explored this resource. Open pit mining would be required to develop portions of the resource, and as a result, large quantities of sulfide-bearing lean ore and waste rock would be stockpiled. Although the problems associated with high-sulfide tailings and acid mine drainage are well documented, the leaching characteristics of low-grade mineralized stockpiles must be understood for environmental impact assessment, siting, and planning. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and AMAX have cooperated in a research program to study leaching and revegetation -of test stock- piles, Six small (1600 'tons) stockpiles were constructed at the MINNAMAX Project Site and they range in composition from 0.29 to 043 g % copper, 0.075 to 0.09% nickel, and 0.6 to 1.45% sulfur. Two of the stockpiles were covered with mineral soil, one was covered with topsoil, and three were not treated Revegetation plots were established on the piles which received a soil cover. Leachate samples and flow measurements were collected at the base of the piles. Initial results indicate that metal concentrations in leachate samples range from 10 to 10,000 times the concentrations found in the streams of the area. During the first growing season, the test pile covered with topsoil yielded 30% less water than untreated test piles. No reduction in yield was observed for the piles that were covered with the less fertile mineral soil. First-year vegetative growth, expressed as biomass, was four times greater on the-topsoil pile than on the mineral soil piles. The long-term effects of vegetation on leachate quantity and quality continue to be investigated.

Loss of visibility due to the occurrence of atmospheric fogging in underground mine airways can lead to a reduction in travel times and loss of production efficiency, an increase in the frequency of vehicular and foot traffic accidents and difficulty in checking rock surfaces for instability and loose material. Where hot and humid surface air meets colder underground air, conditions for fog formation nay be present. Further, suspended particulate matter from diesel exhausts or stoping operations together with slow movement of air along passageways nay contribute to formation. The study describes an investigation being undertaken with the cooperation of Kennecott's Ozark Lead Company to identify causes of the problem.

In this paper, we show that the methane emission and the dust generation in under-ground mining currently and in the future pose operational, health and safety conditions which adversely Impact face productivity and worker satisfaction. One solution is the use of a dual-aircourse system of ventilation. In this concept, one aircourse captures and exhausts to the surface the dust generated and the methane emitted in coal/mineral fragmentation while a second aircourse provides workers with cleaner air for breathing and comfort. Various dual-aircourse configurations adapted to the Variable Wall Miner are analyzed and compared with conventional mining in gassy seams, indicating a marked reduction in the required air quantity and the number of aircourses.
