People are our most valuable resource. It is as true today as any point in mining history as we face unprecedented personnel shortages aggravated by a workforce that is aging, significant generational gaps and difficulties recruiting younger professionals all amidst increasing global mineral demand. The educational system has a similar, but slightly contrary problem. Many historically strong mining engineering programs have died. Now, fewer mining oriented universities are trying to produce more students in order to meet the demand. Moreover, their situation is aggravated by a similarly aging workforce, a general lack of mid-career PhD?s with the interest and field experience to teach effectively, an extremely slow hiring and funding process, and an inability to be competitive against private industry compensation packages. The traditional instructional model, while not necessarily broken, is most certainly dated, and can penalize programs and students where schools do not have in-house expertise in a given topic. Mining companies, like Rio Tinto, have the opportunity, if not necessarily the obligation, to positively influence how this model works. Educational Partnerships may be the key. This paper will address some observations, and possibilities, associated with Rio Tinto?s efforts in this area.

Several years ago it became apparent to some of our people that; there was developing a very definite need for largee coal reserves in the West to satisfy- the need for fuel for the furnaces of electric generating plants with the rapid development of, the West, of both population and industry, it was impossible for hydro-electrics plants to keep up with the ever increasing demand for electricity. In 1960, Mr. E. R. Phelps, then associated with the engineering department of Peabody Coal Company, began a search for and development of coal deposits in the very remote northeast section of Arizona near the village of Kayenta. Travel to this section of the country was not easy even at this late date, and it was an eight hour drive from Farmington, New Mexico to Kayenta, Arizona, a distance of some 130 miles. The trip was over roads that even' a-horse and wagon had trouble negotiating and a four wheel drive vehicle was about the only type of transportation that could satisfactorily traverse these roads, as testify many badly beaten sedans and coupes that tried it. Since that time a very excellent road has been constructed from Shiprock; New Mexico to Cameron, Arizona where it junctions with another excellent road that runs north to Page, Arizona and the Lake. Powell area and south to Flagstaff, Arizona on highway 66. Kayenta is a small village nestled at the foot of the Black Mesa near its northeast extremities. The coal deposits of interest were on the surface of the mesa. This location presented another problem, as the only trail to the top of the mesa was intended for walking, horseback, or a brave soul In a horse and wagon. Once again the four wheel drive vehicle was about the only answer. To reach the coal deposits you must climb the mesa, which is vertical ascent of some 1,500 feet, and then proceed southward into the bowl of the mesa with an ensuing descent of some 1,000 feet, finally coming to an elevation of 6,500 feet, at which elevation the coal outcrops become apparent.

"The Mine Haul Road Optimization Alliance is an Australian industry-academia collaboration which has been developed to support mine haul road operators by fully integrating mine road design research solutions with industry end-user service providers to design, assess, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies required to optimize the safety, environmental and economic performance of a haul road. Initially, a broad overview of the university-industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis, internationally. This insight places realization of a collaboration between Curtin University Western Australian School of Mines Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering (WASM ME2) and the Haul Road Optimization Alliance (HROA) industry members into context of opportunity. Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry can collaborate to deliver a more robust solution to mine haul road design, performance or management needs, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service-providers alike forms the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and implementable solutions. The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver improved mine haul road designs and optimized operational performance, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through focused, end-user driven research and integrated solutions implementation."

INTRODUCTION In the USA regulatory agencies have adopted standards which limit the allowable concentration of ore dust in underground uranium mines. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has recommended a threshold limit value for silica which has been incorporated by reference in federal regulations (30 CFR 57, 1980). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) imposes a limit for unprocessed uranium ore dust for reducing the exposure to radioactive materials from inhalation (10 CFR 20, 1980). We have been unable to trace the origin of the NRC standard. Recently the ICRP has published recommendations concerning limits for intakes of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979). We have used the ICRP methodology to compute the dose equivalent commitment to lung and bone from inhalation of insoluble ore dust particles. These values were used to derive air concentrations which would provide an acceptable risk for induction of cancer from occupational exposure. Results indicate that the new ICRP recommendations are more restrictive than the present NRC standard for radioactivity. The maximum allowable dust load in a uranium mine will depend on both the concentration of silica (% Si02) and the amount of radioactivity (% U308). We have combined these standards assuming complete independence of biological hazard to establish boundary conditions for which either silica or radioactivity is the dominating factor. Based on these results we present suggestions for analysis of ore dust to insure compliance with regulatory agencies. SILICA STANDARDS Silicosis, fibrotic lung disease produced by crystalline silica, was one of the earliest forms of occupational disease to be recognized. The pulmonary lesions caused by silica, silicotic nodules, consist of concentrically arranged bundles of collagen fibers. Fusion of these nodules results in progressive massive fibrosis causing alveolar changes which decrease ventillation and blood flow in the lungs. The current Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for mineral dusts is based on the concentration of free silica. The standard is expressed in three forms: (1) Particle count standard: TLV (mppcf) = 300/(% Si02 + 10) (mppcf = million particles per cubic foot) (2) Respirable dust mass standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 10/(% respirable Si02 + 2) (3) Total dust standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 30/(% Si02 + 3) The most commonly used form is the respirable mass standard. These curent values for silica are based primarily on epidemilogical studies of Vermont granite workers and other occupationally exposed workers. In the Vermont study no cases of silicosis were seen in individuals employed after dust control measures were initiated and whose subsequent exposure averaged less than 5 mppcf. The free silica concentration in the airborne dust to which these workers were exposed averaged 25%. A concentration of 10 mppcf of granite dust is considered equivalent to 0.1 mg/m3 quartz. The current respirable mass standard allows a maximum silica concentration of 0.1 mg/m3. NIOSH (1974) has recommended a reduction in the current TLV for respirable silica to 0.05 mg/m3 Si02. As with radiation standards, the TLV for mineral dusts is an upper limit for time weighted average exposure. It is recommended that dust concentrations be maintained as far below the TLV as current practices permit. RADIATION STANDARDS The present concentration limit for airborne natural uranium in ore dust prior to chemical separation is 75 µg of uranium per m3 of air ( 10 CFR 20, 1980) . This corresponds to 1.85 Bq/m3 (50 pCi/m3 ) of natural uranium, U-238, U-235 and U-234 and is equivalent to 3.7 Bq/m3 (100 pCi/m3 ) of gross alpha activity with radioactive equilibrium between the long-lived alpha progeny through Ra-226. The origin or basis for this standard is not known, but it presumably includes both chemical toxicity and risk from somatic radiation injury. Recently the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977) has published recommendations concerning the objectives and criteria for limiting radiation exposures. This was followed b y a revision of the limits for intake of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979; ICRP, 1980). The previous compilation of limits for internal emitters was published by ICRP Committee II in 1959 (ICRP, 1959). The use of mining tailings-based geopolymer binder as a substitute for cement can be an interesting alternative to the problem of final disposing of large volumes of them. Indeed, mining tailings have a high silica content, which makes them suitable for geopolymerization. The tailings samples contain Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Cd and Bi, mainly. X-ray diffraction results show that the tailings are composed of quartz, SiO2 (81%). Geopolymerized tailing samples (GTPS) were obtained by varying the ratio of SiO2/ Al2O3 and SiO2/NaOH. The compressive strength of the GTPS varied between 2 MPa and 8 MPa. The electrical conductivity in the leaching tests varies between 13.91– 16.11 mS/cm2 indicating that ions are present in the solution. However, the pH = 10.5 indicates that acidity is not being generated. The element that mostly leaches is iron. The highest percentage of leaching is observed for cadmium (69%) and chromium (93%). The concentrations of elements are under the maximum permissible limits for water according to the Peruvian legislation. However, mass transfer leach tests and immersion leach tests must be realized.

Four different types of fire suppression systems were evaluated in large-scale fire experiments to study the effect of air velocity on their effectiveness in extinguishing conveyor belt fires. The four different types of suppression system were water sprinkler, deluge-type water spray and two different dry chemical fire suppression systems. The large-scale fire tests were conducted with 1.8-m- (72-in.)-wide fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G Flame Test). Each fire suppression system was tested at air velocities of 152 - 168 m (500–550 ft) per minute (mpm) and 411 - 457 mpm (1,350 - 1,500 fpm). Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each fire suppression system. Both of the water-based fire suppression systems were able to suppress the fire to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. However, the amount of water needed to suppress the fire to the point where a miner could walk up to and extinguish any smoldering belting was greater than the current MSHA regulations required. MSHA regulations only require 10 minutes of water supply for a suppression system. In the test setup, neither of these systems would have suppressed the fire had the water been turned off to the system after 10 minutes. The dry chemical suppression systems produced mixed results. Dry chemical suppression system A did not suppress the conveyor belt fire at either air velocity. Dry chemical system B suppressed the fire at 152 mpm (500 fpm) air velocity, but produced mixed results at the higher air velocity. Details are presented on the large-scale fire test setup, arrangement of the fire suppression systems and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity on fire suppression system design and performance.

Siderite ore with high phosphorus content was reduced isothermally at 1,050° C with pulverized coal and different dosages of sodium carbonate. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energydispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) were used to characterize the samples. The influence of sodium carbonate on the carbothermic reduction process was investigated. Sodium carbonate and its dosage played a considerable role in the carbothermic reduction. The iron particle size in the reduced ore was below 20 µm, and fayalite was abundant without sodium carbonate additive. With a mass ratio of Na2CO3-to-ore of 5% additive, the iron particle size in the reduced ore was generally above 50 µm, and the diffraction intensity associated with metallic iron in the XRD pattern increased. The effect of sodium carbonate on the phase transformation of fluorapatite during carbothermic reduction was also addressed via thermodynamic calculations and aqueous leaching experiments. The results showed that the fluorapatite was not reduced to P2 at 1,050° C, and a portion of the fluorapatite was converted to soluble phosphate. The reduction of siderite can be catalyzed by adding an appropriate amount of sodium carbonate. This catalytic activity was caused by an increase in the reducing reaction activity of FeO and the acceleration of the carbon gasification reactions. The decrease in phosphorous content in the iron concentrate was attributed to an improvement in the separation of the iron phase from the slag phase when sodium carbonate was added and with the formation of soluble phosphate.

Radon in the Environment Radon, as a natural nobel gas, can be detected nearly everywhere in the environment as a decay product of ubiquitous uranium. As it is emanated from soil and rocks measurable concentrations have been found at the surface of soils and in even higher concentrations in enclosed spaces like, for example, mines and buildings. While above soil surface activities caused by radon have been found in an order of magnitude of up to 1 pCi/l (Weigel, F. 1978), concentrations in enclosed spaces and mines are higher because of the lack of atmospheric circulation. Beside air circulation the relevant figure depends on the Ra226-concentration in the surrounding rocks or building material, as well as on emanation coefficient and the diffusion coefficient. While representative Rn222concentrations in well ventilated buildings are reported to be in an order of magnitude of 1 pCi/l maximum values up to one order of magnitude higher have been found in badly ventilated brick buildings (Ettenhuber, E., Lehmann, R., Clajus, P., 1978) (Aitken, J.H., et al., 1977). Just now it was stated that the reduced air circulation due to German legal regulations on energy conservation will increase radon exposure of the public considerably (Jacobi, W., 1979). Radon in Mines Radon exposure of workers is, of course, a matter of concern in uranium ore mines where relatively high concentrations of the uranium to be mined are present. Measures to protect workers' health have been implemented, based on experience on dose-effect relationship. They serve to meet exposure standards by limiting inhalation of radioactive particles, in reducing radon concentrations or in limiting working hours. Both improved measuring devices and capacity as well as the lower discrimination threshold enable to measure radon concentrations in other mines, e.g. in coal mines. It is known that radioactivity in coal is small compared with that in other minerals and even soil, rocks. Nevertheless, radioactive elements were identified in coal and so the question was whether the concentrations of radon in coal mines might be a subject of concern. The problems encountered when measuring radon in coal mines are described below, as the measuring device has to be flame proofed which is an important additional requirement. Measured radon concentrations in British coal mines have already been published (Duggan, M.J., Howell, D.M., Soilleux, P.J., 1968 (Dungey, C.J., Hore, J., Walter, M.D., 1978). The authors found concentrations of up to 14 pCi/l in Cornish mines. In most cases the values were in the order of 2 pCi/l. These results were consistent with measurements reported from U.S.-coal mines (Lucas, H.F., Gabrush, A.F., 1966). Such concentrations of radon were not considered to represent a hazard for British miners (Ogden, T.L., 1974). In Germany, too, first measurements have been carried out in five coal mines in the Saarland in the 60's. Air samples were taken at different places in the coal mines, dried, fed to an ionisation cell and measured by a device including reference cells. Samples taken at ventilated places showed radon concentrations consistent with the lower British results. They all kept within the standards of the first German regulation on protection against radiation. Measuring the radon daughters was renounced because of the relatively low radon concentrations and the requirements for flame proofness in coal mines. Moreover, it can be ascertained that because of the effective ventilation the disequilibrium factor between the decay products and the radon concentration remains far below the value of one (Muth, H., 1978) (Keller, G.). In 1979 the committee on mine safety and health protection in coal and other mines of the EEC proposed to have measured and evaluated radon concentrations in European coal mines to find out whether they complied with international standards. Great Britain and Germany agreed to this proposal and by commissioning such measurements to scientific institutes complied with the request to harmonize the methods used. In the Federal Republic of Germany, e.g. Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse (WBK) and Staatliches Materialprüfungsamt; Dortmund (MPA) were requested to carry out the measurements in coal mines of the Ruhr coalfield whereas Saarberg Interplan was responsible for the Saar coalfield. The WBK measurements are reported in later paragraphs.

"With increasing demand for steel and depletion of high-grade iron ore deposits, more research efforts are being directed toward extending the life of existing ore reserves and developing technology to treat low-grade iron ore resources. Among all the reported technologies, biotechnologies in mineral processing – specifically bioleaching and microbially induced flotation – have emerged to be considered as low-cost, environmentally friendly potential alternatives to many of the current mineral processing techniques. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current research on the use of microorganisms for iron ore beneficiation and, further, discusses the applicability of bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation for the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores.IntroductionIncreasing global demand for raw materials has led to diminishing resources of high-grade iron ore. As a result, the mining and utilization of low-grade hematite, limonite, specularite, siderite and goethite ores have attracted more and more attention. However, these types of iron ores are of complex paragenesis and fine disseminated grain size, and often contaminated by phosphorus in the form of solid solution. The distribution of phosphorus throughout the iron mineral crystals prevents the effective use of physical separation techniques, and these complex ores are at present largely untapped due to a lack of cost-effective and efficient processing methods. Chemical leaching and roasting-magnetic separation approaches have been mainly tested only on the laboratory scale and are all either cost prohibitive or ineffective when used on low-grade complex iron ores."

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. Covers with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) have been used in recent years as gas barriers for the isolation of wastes, including reactive mine tailings. Capillary barrier effects help to maintain a high degree of saturation in the moisture retaining layer, which then reduces gas flux. Various factors affect the degree of saturation of the moisture retaining layer in a CCBE, such as the material water retention characteristics and layer thickness. Slope geometry can also influence the hydrogeological behaviour of a CCBE, but this factor has frequently been ignored in the past. In this paper, the authors show some results of a numerical study that illustrates the influence of slope on the behavior of capillary barriers made of different types of material. The numerical model calculations are based on an actual case of a CCBE constructed in northern Quebec. This investigation shows that the water content profile is greatly affected by the position along the slope. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the influence of the geometry to properly establish the performance of a cover system.

Some of the mineral deposits that are being processed today, and especially those expected to be processed in the future, have relatively low compositions of the valuable mineral. With these low-grade ores, it is necessary to be able to design processes that are sufficiently low-cost to permit exploitation. One approach to minimizing the capital and operating costs for these processes is to use the capabilities of computer process simulation in the design phase of development, to make important technical and economic decisions regarding the evaluation of alternative process flow schemes, the selection of equipment and the choice of operating conditions. There are mathematical simulation models for most mineral processing operations, including several each for size reduction, size classification and mineral separations. To be able to tie these individual operating models together in an integrated mineral process simulation, however, it is important, in fact in some cases essential, that there be a model which describes how the mineral system responds to size reduction in making the liberated valuable and waste mineral particles available for concentration or rejection operations and the locked particles available for possible recirculation. This, then, is the role played by the mineral liberation model, showing the relationship between particle size, quantity and composition throughout the process.

Recently, liquid carbon dioxide (L-CO2) blasting technology has attracted attention due to its good fracturing effect and safety performance, especially in coal seam permeability improvement. This paper analyzes the blasting effect of L-CO2 based on experiments and studies the fracturing mechanism from the perspective of stress wave action via theoretical analysis and peridynamic simulations. The results indicate that L-CO2 blasting achieves a good fracturing effect without forming a crush zone, and the loading rate and strength of the stress wave are key factors.

Operating uranium mill tailings containment and mill decommissioning activities are regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through numerous regulatory mechanisms. Reduction of radon emissions from tailings disposal areas, remedial actions to return groundwater to baseline constituent concentrations, and 200-to 1,000-year stabilization of tailings are major focus areas of regulation. The cumulative economic impact and uncertainty associated with regulation are very significant and will hinder future development of uranium milling facilities.

The understanding of public debates over mineral exploration and mining largely originates from exceptional situations such as mining accidents of conflicts. Less is known about how mining is portrayed and understood under more conventional settings. What storylines dominate the local day-to-day public debate? This article presents results from a comparative case study focusing on newspaper coverage of mineral exploration and mining in three European countries representing different geological and socio-economic contexts. Newspaper articles from the Geyer-Erzgebirge region in Germany, the Andalusia region in Spain, and Northern Finland are studied. The sample looks into the period between September 2018 and February 2020 and shows that regional newspapers report about mining issues relatively intensively even in the absence of major accidents or other media events causing peaks of attention. The tone of the articles is generally neutral to positive towards mining activities, reflecting the specific local settings, historical experiences, and future expectations. Despite the different contexts of the three countries, there were considerable similarities to the topics highlighted, including common themes of mining revival, mining events and social interaction, history of mining, and damages related to mining. Past, present, and future employment opportunities related directly or indirectly to the mining sector are key storylines. Another recurrent underlying theme is the need to balance environment and safety risks and socio-economic prosperity, typically covered through ordinary disputes among the mining sector, public authorities, regional non-governmental organizations, and local initiatives.

With ore grades continually decreasing and finer mill feed requirements, it becomes increasingly important to have the capability to handle the larger tonnages economically. With the 10 ft. Standard capable of reducing 1,633 metric tons per hour (1,800 short tons per hour) to 80 percent passing 50 MM (2 inches) and the 10 ft. Short Head following to produce a mill feed of all minus 12 MM (1/2 inch) at a rate of 608 metric tons per hour (670 short tons per hour), we feel significant savings will be realized in installation and operating costs. The largest concentration of cost in the secondary and tertiary crushing stations is the building itself that houses the process equipment. An example of the savings to be attained can be seen from an examination of a 40,820 metric ton (45,000 short ton) per day crushing plant. A total of nine 7 ft. Symons Cone crushers is used to generate 12 MM (1/2 inch) ball mill feed. The average center distance between units is 6.1 M (20 feet) and allowing a 6.1 M (20 feet) nominal distance from the centerline to the wails, the building becomes 61 M (200 feet) long. For this production rate, four 10 ft. Symons Cone crushers would be required. With the 10 ft. crushing plant requiring a center distance spacing of 7.6 M (25 feet), the building length totals approximately 38 M (125 feet). Construction costs vary depending on location, but a reduction in building length from 61 M (200 feet) to 38 M (125 feet) will result in estimated savings of between $2,500,000 and S4,000,000. While the 10 ft. Symons Cone has been involved in a number of feasibility studies for some time, the Process Machinery Division of Rexnord commenced detail design work on the 10 ft. Cone crusher in 1972. For comparison purposes, the 10 ft. and 7 ft. capacities are given in Table 1.

Grupo Acera, HYLSA originated in 1942 when Hojalata y Lamina began operations to supply steel strip for the Cuauhtémoc Brewery, the parent company. Production began in April, 1943 with growth accelerated because of World War II. By 1948 the company was producing its own steel from electric furnaces charged with scrap iron. Further expansion was hampered by the fluctuations in availability, price and quality of scrap iron. As a result, a search was made for a suitable process to enable HYLSA to satisfy its need for a reliable source of feed for its steel-making facilities. Their relatively low iron requirements at the time did not justify the very high capital investments required using the conventional blast furnace method. Processes which by-passed the blast furnaces were very much in their infancy and were not commercially tested. HYLSA then undertook an investigation of the direct reduction processes, knowing full well that much larger companies in other countries had investigated several processes but their work had not established a trend toward direct reduction or any particular process. However, after much effort and persistence HYLSA arrived at a process which suited their conditions. By using Mexican iron ore and natural gas they developed the now well-known H. y L. Process to produce sponge iron. Concurrent with the start of investigations which led to the H. y L. Process, HYLSA began an exploration program for a suitable source of iron ore. Thus in 1951, Cia. "This paper will explain how the Contractor and Owner avoided a contractual dispute involving characterization, impacts, and final remedy for challenging ground conditions encountered during drill and blast excavation of the starter tunnel required for launch of the tunnel boring machine (TBM). During excavation more than 600 feet underground, the Contractor encountered a large complex fault zone subject to more than 14 bar of water pressure. Successive ground inflows from the fault complex over a six-month period presented significant technical and partnership challenges for the team and ultimately delayed the project by nearly one year. This paper will discuss how the Contractor, Owner, and their respective consultants worked together to address these challenges, make decisions, and ultimately move the project to successful completion. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven states of the western United States of America rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River basin, including the Rocky Mountains, the Wind River Mountains, and the Uinta Mountains. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. During the 1980s and 1990s, snowfall was relatively abundant and Colorado River flows were high on average. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present day, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished. In fact, a trend toward diminishing flows is evident during the period of the historical record. This variability in Colorado River flows and the trend to lower flows is represented in the following Figure 1."
