Cortez Gold Mines completed a feasibility study for a new openpit gold mine in north central Nevada. The production schedule calls for a peak in material movement. This schedule is based on current operational efficiencies and equipment parameters observed at the company’s existing openpit operation. To mitigate risks of over/under predicting production, simulation modeling was used to validate the loading and haulage requirements during the peak production period. The advantage of simulation is the ability to provide a realistic model of a mining operation based on scheduled and unscheduled random events during the period under analysis.

Every two years, industry leaders and practitioners of tunneling and underground construction gather at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) to learn from their peers about the most recent advances and breakthroughs in this unique fleld. Industry experts from around the world highlight their most recent projects and share real-world experiences. They also share with their colleagues new technologies and methodologies that attendees can take home to their respective projects. The 2013 RETC was held June 23-26 in Washing-ton, D.C., itself home to several major tunneling and underground construction projects. The conference is sponsored by SME. Attendance was 1,384 professionals. The accompanying exhibit hosted 159 companies in 188 booths. A few of the topics covered in the technical sessions dealt with caverns and large spans, contracting practices, tunnel linings, design and planning, geotechnical considerations and instrumentation. The conference was preceded by four short courses, all well attended. They were ?Grouting in Underground Construction,? ?Tunnel Lining Design,? ?Microtunneling Application? and ?Risk, Uncertainty and Hard Decisions.? In addition, a sold-out field trip to D.C. Water?s Blue Plains Tunnel took place following the conference. The Blue Plains Tunnel is part of the agency?s Clean Rivers Project. Also during the meeting, three students each received $5,000 scholarships from the UCA of SME, while another three students each received $2,500 scholarships from RETC (See page 53).

"The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. The Candelaria copper-gold mine is located approximately 25 km south and east of Copiapo in Region III, Chile. The original concentrator was designed to treat 28,000 t/d (30,800 stpd) of chalcopyrite-bearing ore through a circuit consisting of a single 11.0 m(36 ft) diameter SAG mill, two ball mills, conventional rougher and scavenger flotation, column cell cleaner flotation, and ceramic disc filtration. The plant was commissioned in August 1994 and quickly reached design capacity and expected levels of metallurgical performance. In May 1996, a decision was made to double the capacity of the concentrator by the addition of a second line of equipment. The expanded facilities were commissioned in October 1997, less than 18 months after the decision to proceed, and well within the budget. The original concentrator facilities were replicated or duplicated as much as possible, however, a number of important equipment changes were made to take advantage of industry developments since the original concentrator was designed. These included the use of Eimco 120 m3 (4,200 ft3) cells for rougher and scavenger flotation and the installation of a Svedala VTM-800Vertimill for regrinding. This paper describes the rationale behind these changes and explores the reasons for the success of the project.

Washability analysis determines the maximum separation efficiency that can be achieved in the operation of coal preparation plants. Unfortunately, there are no on-line techniques for determining this most fundamental information. It now appears possible to determine coal washability on-line through the use of x-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis. This paper presents the results for the development of a CT-based, on-line coal washability analyzer. The development of appropriate hardware and software necessary to adapt a CT analyzer for use in determining coal washability is discussed. Testing of the analyzer using well-characterized coal samples is presented.

Soon New York City will have a new train station. A tunnel project is under construction to extend Line 7 to a new station that is located near the Jacob K. Javits Con-vention Center. This is also part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment project that is intended to aid redevelop-ment of the west side of Midtown Manhattan around the Long Island Railroad?s Caemmerer Railyard. The station, or ?cavern? as it?s called by those excavating it, will be the portal for that growth. In the city, public transportation means high-rise residential proper-ties will have better access to the business district, and those outside the area will have greater access to event facilities ? two factors that are critical for development investment.

?Classification System Efficiency (CSE)? is a simple, powerful concept which can be used to measure and improve ball mill circuit efficiency. This paper describes six plant case studies which demonstrate the use of CSE to diagnose and/or improve grinding circuit performance, with related improvements in circuit efficiency ranging from 3 to 30 percent. The increased effective mill grinding energy is recaptured from energy that was going into over grinding, which can greatly benefit downstream mineral separation. The achievable CSE for given circuit design/operating variables is described, providing every plant metallurgist with the means to determine the potential for increasing their particular grinding circuit?s efficiency through increased CSE.

Over 800 mines have closed in Australia in the past 25 years. This paper summarizes the data obtained from those closures and includes all Australian States and Territories and all commodities, including metalliferous, coal and industrial minerals. Twenty five percent of the mines closed due to resource exhaustion or depletion; 24% due to high costs, price drops, or declining grades; 8% due to open pit resource depletion (but with underground reserves remaining) or underground reserves depleted (but plans to open cut remainder) and 7% due to receivership or voluntary administration. The environmental, social and economic impacts of these closures are also significant and include acid mine drainage and impact on mine employees. An understanding of the causes of premature mine closure will better equip mining companies and governments to better manage future mine closures, wherever in the world the mines are operating.

This paper presents the design and construction of a multi-channel geophone array that improves tomographic imaging capabilities in both surface and underground mines. Especially important in the design of the array is sensor placement. Three issues related to sensor placement are addressed in this paper: 1) sensor placement in long, horizontal boreholes, 2) development of simple, robust, MSHA-acceptable clamping unit, and 3) orientation of the geophones within the borehole. Improved imaging capabilities will produce energy, environmental, and economic benefits by increasing exploration accuracy and reducing operating costs.

Project Description The Ok Tedi Mine is located approximately 18 km east of the Papua and New Guinea-Indonesia border, on the southernmost extremity of the Star Mountains Range, it is situated almost equidistant from the north and south coastlines. The headwaters of the Fly River system are in the Star Mountains. The open pit mining activities are on Mt Fubilan with a (pre-mining) elevation of 2,095 metres (6,871 Feet) in the Western Province. The mine is in an area characterised by very steep topography and dense tropical rainforest. The pit has been free draining but will cease to be so in the first quarter of 2009. Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) required a drainage tunnel to be driven under the mine, if possible before free drainage was no longer possible. The tunnel was required to be at least 5 m in diameter and 4,200 m (13,776 ft) long, with a possible extension of 1,100 m (3,608 Feet) if the mine decided it was required for additional drainage and underground exploration. The tunnel is being driven up grade at 0.67%, and will be connected to the pit by the raising boring of two 1.1 m (3 Ft. 6 In.) diameter shafts from the tunnel level 250 m (820 Feet) below to the pit. In Tabubil, the adjacent township at an elevation of 640 m (2,100 feet), air temperatures range from a mean at night of 20 (68°F) degrees centigrade to a daytime aver-age of 27 (81°F) degrees. Extremes of 12 and 39 (54°F?102°F) degrees centigrade have been recorded. Rain falls, on average, 339 days each year and totals 8,000 mm (315 inches), and have been known to approach 12,000 mm (472 inches) making the area one of the wettest places on earth. The portal site is at an elevation of 1,200 m or 4,000 ft and the air temperatures are a little cooler and the rainfall a little greater. Access to the mine is by air for personnel and light freight and by ship for heavier goods and materials. The port is at Kiunga on the Fly River 153 km from the portal site. The program for the project was tight, the decision to purchase the required TBM was made in July 2007 and the final decision to go ahead with the construction of the tunnel was made in November 2007.

Ball mills are commonly used for regrinding operations in the mineral processing industry. But, in recent times, efforts are being made at the introduction of stirred mills particularly for those instances where very fine grinding is required. Media type (steel shot, glass beads, alumina balls and crushed quartz), media size, mill speed and the number of passes required to obtained the target product size are studied. The product size and energy consumption are used in the evaluation of the test results. The grinding media size, shape, density, filling ratio, mill circumferential speed and grinding time play a distinct role in product size fineness.

The metamorphic terrane of southwestern India is a geological environment containing ilmenite source-rocks, transport drainage systems, and resultant beach sand deposits that contain altered ilmenites greater than 60wt% TiO2. As such, this environment provides a geological laboratory, from source to deposit, for the investigation of ilmenite origin, alteration, and geochemical character. Ilmenite samples from potential source rocks, river sands, and beach sands all show degrees of alteration and a variety of alteration textures (iron leaching) producing leucoxene (here defined as >70 <90wt% TiO2) and progressing to rutile (here defined as >90wt% TiO2). Distinct alteration textures are specific to different source rocks and are used together with trace element geochemistry as provenance criteria. Ilmenites are classified on the basis of their trace element content. In India, the ilmenites are classified principally according to the Mg, Nb, and Mn content and this signature defines potential source rocks, even where the ilmenite is altered to a TiO2 content of 70wt%. The trace element data may fingerprint source rocks whose ilmenite is more prone to iron leaching and that criterion has application in exploration for higher-grade ilmenites.

It is important to study the ventilation system in order to better design and control of the working environment in deep underground mines. With increasing depth, heat, and humidity performance may be reduced and impair the attention of workers. The purpose of this paper is to apply a complex; development-end model configured in the MULTIFLUX program, developed at the University of Nevada, Reno, USA. The MULTIFLUX development-end model template has been benchmarked against measurement results from two UK coal mines in previous studies. The present study is a test of MULTIFLUX application in a metal mine. The model incorporates the simulation of the air flow field in the drift and the auxiliary air duct; simultaneous heat and humidity transport from the drift wall; heat and mass exchange between the air in the drift and the ducts; and the evaporation of process water and/or condensation of vapor as governed by the psychometric conditions. The results are compared with field data, measured at the Lucky Friday Mine (LF) in Idaho, USA, an underground mine and also shown between the results from the MULTIFLUX-based model, and those from another program, Kduct, developed at the Kyushu University in Japan.. Residence time distributions (RTDs) were estimated by water tracing in a number of wet overflow ball mills (diameters 0.38 to 4.65 m) producing dense, coal-water slurries. In open-circuit mills of 0.38 m diameter and various length-diameter (L/D) ratios, the mean residence times of solid were also determined from measured mill holdups. Holdup increased with increased mill feed rate, but the mean residence times of coal and water were still equal to each other. The experimental residence time distributions were fitted to the Mori-Jimbo-Yamazaki semi-infinite, axial mixing model, and the dimensionless mixing coefficient was determined for each of 25 tests in single- and two-compartment mills. This coefficient was found to be independent of the feed rate but linearly proportional to the D/L ratio. The mixing coefficient was smaller for two-compartment mills than for single-compartment mills, showing that there was reduced mixing introduced by the diaphragm separating the compartments. Equations are given to scale residence time distributions for changes in mill diameter and length.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region&apos;s dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming&apos;s increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986&apos;s 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel&apos;s recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984&apos;s stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY An approach borrowed from the petroleum industry was applied to the gas development evaluation for the Bulga underground coal mine in New South Wales, Australia. The results enabled the coal mine operator, Xstrata Coal, to systematically plan the extraction of gas in harmony with mine production planning of multiple coal seams. This has allowed for a more proactive approach in preparing the resources and infrastructure needed to capture the gas and accelerate coal mining while maintaining their high level of commitment to safety. Norwest has for decades used gas recovery simulation models to assist the petroleum industry and the coal bed methane (CBM) industry in understanding and forecasting fluid saturations and flow behavior. Norwest developed a similar process with Xstrata to migrate existing mine data at Bulga into reservoir simulation models to study various drainage alternatives. An interesting feature to the evaluation was also developing an understanding of test procedures and nomenclature from the mining industry to properly translate the data for input in simulators developed for the petroleum and CBM industries. The model was then calibrated to actual field data collected from drainage pilot tests that Norwest helped design and monitor at Bulga. The resulting calibrated predictions were then used to develop budgets, schedules, resource requirements, and alternatives for capturing the gas and delivering it to market ahead of mining. Increasing revenue, reducing emissions, improving schedules and cutting costs for the mining operations have all contributed to justifying this advanced approach at Bulga. It has also allowed Xstrata to expand their focus to the sizable gas reserves in seams not currently planned for mining. Several of these seams would be economic gas development targets once the gas recovery infrastructure is installed for the mine. The evaluation process was refined throughout this project and the resulting approach will benefit Xstrata with their broader strategic development of resources in the Hunter Valley and beyond to their worldwide operations.

Recently developed clay deposits that will impact regional and world markets are described. These deposits, their location, geology, and physical properties are delineated. Kaolins from the State of Para in Brazil and from Ukraine; bentonites from Argentina and India; and palygorskite and sepiolite from China are world class deposits that when processed using modem technology will produce excellent products. Other deposits that may affect regional markets are kaolins from China, Australia and Indonesia; bentonites from Georgia (formerly USSR) and China; and palygorskite from India and Ukraine. New ball clay deposits that will affect regional markets are in China and Indonesia.

Asarco Incorporated’s Omaha, Nebraska refinery site and the City of Omaha’s downtown redevelopment projects are the perfect example of the marriage of the Brownfield and Sustainable Development strategies. Nebraska’s largest voluntary site remediation project created a focus point for redevelopment and has spurred over $1 billion in economic investment within a 1-mile radius of the site. Asarco was faced with options of very expensive and uncertain facility upgrades or a shutdown. Local leaders, Asarco, and regulators worked together to convert a controversial and complex site to a park-like redevelopment area with numerous long-term benefits to the City and the environment.
