The principles of quality management are well developed and, from a practical stand- point, thoroughly implemented in the process industries of Japan. Although these principles are now applied to the U.S. manufacturing industry, and as a result, the steel industry, they have been largely ignored in the non-ferrous and precious metals industries. This paper presents the concepts and practical approaches to implement a total quality management program. Contrary to the beliefs of many managers, such a program increases yields, recoveries and output while it decreases unit costs. In fact, quality management incorporating statistical process control will be an essential ingredient for metallurgical plants to effectively compete in the '90's.

There are many advantages to upgrading coal with dry jigging technology. The most obvious is the lack of process water, which eliminates the need for fines dewatering and slurry confinement. Dry jigging eliminates the clean coal moisture penalty associated with wet processing. Particulate emissions are virtually nonexistent due to inclusions of fabric dust collectors on all modern dry jig plants. Due to the environmentally kind nature of dry jig plants, installation permits are often measured in days, not months. Coupled with all these advantages there has been a fundamental advance in dry jigging efficiency. All of these advantages have renewed the coal industry’s interest in dry jigging. But, air jigging isn’t right for every application. There are limitations due to particle size, particle shape, moisture, and near gravity content. This paper explores the evolution of dry jigging; reviews parameters important for determining the suitability of dry jigging; compares historical performance data as measured by imperfection, against results from modern dry jigging technology; and presents actual data from modern dry jig installations.

An integral part of site investigations for shafts and underground workings should be hydrogeologic evaluations of the need for and method of ground-water control. Such investigations should include: 1. Classification of the problem by aquifer type. 2. Integration of other site investigations with hydrogeologic programs, including assessment of the need for water control. 3. Planning and conduct of aquifer tests tailored to the aquifer situation. 4. Evaluation of pumping requirements to achieve water control objectives. 5. Scheduling of dewatering for optimum results and costs. 6. Evaluation of environmental impacts of pumpage and water discharge. 7. Planning of operational monitoring for program modification and liability limitation. Early hydrogeologic involvement can result in avoiding unnecessary duplication in site investigations.

The problem of defining the optimum final limits of an open-pit mine has challenged the mining industry for the last three decades. The difficulty results mainly from the great number of variables involved and from the sheer computational effort required in real-life applications. An actual lignite deposit is used in this study to introduce and apply a new methodology that can be used as a basis for surface-mine design optimization. A geologic-reserves model of the deposit is first developed with the use of an integrated geostatistical-modeling package. The model is transformed into an economic one through the use of flexible objective function formulation(s). The final open-pit limits are then optimized using a competent commercial optimizer, and comparative-sensitivity analyses are performed to study the effect of some basic mining and economic parameters on the optimal pit design. The conclusions drawn can develop useful guidelines for decision making by the mine operator.

This paper examines methods for limiting occupational silica exposures for roof bolting personnel in underground coal mining. A canopy air curtain and an air tube were evaluated as means to provide filtered air over the breathing zone of these personnel. Laboratory testing showed that dust reductions beneath the air curtain and air tube approached 60 percent and 40 percent, respectively, with low interference air velocities. The data also showed that dust reductions were highest for positions closest to the device and that these levels decreased with distance. This paper also evaluates a metal rake, a flexible insert, and a rigid insert for cleaning the roof bolter dust collector box. Less dust was produced when using the rigid insert. Surprisingly, the flexible insert was sometimes no better than scraping or raking the dust onto the mine floor. However, little dust got on the coveralls when using either of the inserts.

Activated bleaching clays, so called because of their ability to remove color bodies from bleach fats and oils, are produced from clays of bentonitic origin. Activation is achieved by subjecting these clays to physical or chemical alteration to increase selective sorption capacities (1) . The future of activated bleaching clays depends upon the ability of producers to recognize the new areas of applications which are arising, and their skill in developing sophisticated active clays to meet new and stringent requirements. The major portion of activated bentonites are produced for decolorization of oils. New techniques of activation will improve these clays for broader spectrum use. General properties expected to result from present activation methods are: 1. Modification of hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties and increased available surface area in non-aqueous systems, thereby improving sorption capacity and ability to remove color bodies from oils. The following additional properties will be expected from future activated clays: 2. High purity of the active clay with interfering impurities totally removed. 3. Increased selective sorption capacity in aqueous systems. 4. Selective chemical reactivity, such as oxidation or hydrolysis. This property is required for removing

"The European aluminium industry, through its member organisation the European Aluminium Association (EAA), initiated a program on sustainable development for the aluminium industry in 2001. The first step involved the development of a set of sustainable development (SD) indicators for the industry, taking into account of the different interests involved and also the different existing conventions. The indicator set was developed during 2001 and 2002 with the assistance of recognised partners, including Wuppertal Institute from Germany and Versailles University from France. As well, both internal and external stakeholder groups were involved in order to validate the indicators. This has resulted in a set of thirty-four indicators used in the first survey exercise. In the survey the EAA, together with the national aluminium associations, attempted to cover all European plants producing alumina, primary aluminium, rolling ingots, extrusion ingots, foil and recycled aluminium -covering approximately 800 plants. The survey used two points in time, 1997 and 2002, in order to start developing a trend for the individual indicators and to measure progress over time. The industry response to the survey was very positive, with a total industry coverage based on tonnage reported of over 80% for 2002 data and 70% for 1997 data. The results also show a solid progress for most indicators and particularly for social indicators such as training performance, community involvement and employees health programmes. The EAA is committed to conducting this as a regular exercise and is engaged in a number of stakeholder workshops in order to present the survey results, to review the indicators used and to also consider adjustments of these based on feedback from stakeholders and experiences from the first data collection."

Fuzzy logic and neural networks are new technologies being applied in many areas of engineering and business. While it is not always clear which kinds of problems are best suited to these technologies, and which problems are best approached with more standard methodologies, both fuzzy logic and neural networks appear to show great promise in the field of control systems. This paper demonstrates two advantages that these technologies offer: Easy controller design in the absence of a mathematical model of the plant to be controlled, and adaptive control capable of quickly responding to changes in the plant.

Soil pollution, a very serious environmental problem, has been attracting considerable attention in recent years. It is now generally recognized that land as a component of the environment deserves the same attention and protection as water and air. This recognition has arisen perhaps because of increased incidents of land pollution, the scarcity of land, and increased awareness and concern about long-term effects of land pollution on terrestrial and aquatic eco-systems and on ground water quality. Contamination of land results from a wide range of human activities, including industrial discharge process, disposal of wastewater and agriculture. The environmental impact of exploration, production and refining of crude oil is a major concern in developed and developing countries. Because of the known adverse effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on soil ecology and fertility there has been growing interest in the development of efficient technologies for the remediation of contaminated land, with a view toward making it available for further use. Crude oil is a natural product and as such is susceptible to degradation by naturally occurring micro flora. Bioremediation has become an important method for the restoration of oil-polluted environments. A bench scale study was conducted to evaluate the bioremediation technique in treating soil contaminated with transformer oil. The steps involved in this study are: (1) Preparation of contaminated soil, (2) Extraction of PAHs and PCBs from contaminated soil, (3) Treatment of contaminated soil in slurry batch reactor, and (4) Analysis of PAHs and PCBs by gas chromatography technique. The performance of reactor was assessed by measuring parameters like COD, PAHs and PCBs. The study was con-ducted for six different pulp densities ranging from 20% to 40%. The maximum removal of PAHs and PCBs was observed for 20% pulp density.

This study describes the positioning strategies used by operators of radio controlled underground mining machines. The observations have implications for task design to insure adequate visibility and task performance. Radio controlled continuous coal mining machines have allowed many mines to increase safety and production by placing human operators away from the hazards of an unsupported mine roof. The operator is no longer confined to an operators component and visibility can be enhanced with proper positioning. Also, the operator is no longer subjected to the shocks and vibrations of the mining machine. The operator's ability to move freely about the worksite requires a careful analysis of several competing safety and production considerations. Thirty-five operators of remotely controlled continuous mining machines were observed using work sampling followed by interviews to determine where the operator was positioned and what he or she was watching. These observations were separated according to the task being performed by the continuous mining machine and summarized as position density plots. The specific task of tramming in reverse through a crosscut is analyzed along with more general summaries of the time miners spend outside of the policy-defined operating positions while performing other production tasks. The operators were: observed to frequently vary from company standard operating procedures (SOP). Many of the variations from company SOPS were based on task demands. Interview responses indicated that portions of the mining task place visibility demands on the operators that are difficult to accommodate within existing procedures. An improved task design process would include these visibility requirements. Also, the operator's vision can be augmented thorough video cameras in future teleoperated mining systems, and the operator can be increasingly isolated from environmental hazards.

The subjects to be examined in my portion of the session entitled "Technology of Aluminum.. Recovery" will be twofold. 1. Economics of the basic aluminum economy--supply-demand-price. 2. Specifications of aluminum products produced from municipal waste--from the secondary aluminum standpoint. It is the object of this speech to first impress everyone with the excellent long-run markets for the aluminum products from municipal waste and then to acquaint everyone with the rather liberal scrap specifications that the recycling industry can tolerate. The most important statement that can be made about the recycling of aluminum is that it is now and will be an economic necessity. This is true far many reasons; one which hit the headlines recently was Interior Secretary Rogers Morton's statement "Third-world nations could use mineral wealth not to achieve political ends but to jack up economic positions. The result could be sky-rocketing prices and dwindling supplies on world markets." There is no reason why the group of countries that supplies most of our bauxite can't get together the way oil-producing countries got together on the price of oil. (Jamaica and Surinam, are original sources of two-thirds of the aluminum used in the United States.) The worry is not so much that we will end up without the basic raw material but rather that the price might be so high that we could not afford it. So much for the blackmail reason for recycling aluminum; the supply and demand picture in both the primary and recycling sectors of the aluminum economy is far more meaningful.

In many ways a government could be regarded as a macro business enterprise. Its shareholders are its peoples, the productivity of the nation depends on them, and, indeed, the profits or losses of a nation's balance sheet can be linked to the surplus or deficit in its balance of payments. International loans need to be repaid, and in most developing nations the noose is tied so tightly that one wonders if such debts will ever be repaid. In their endeavour to meet such obligations, their currencies may be devalued [sometimes in frightening proportions], in the hope of boosting the export potential. However, this is a vicious circle, since exports will not be achievable unless sufficient technical expertise and infrastructure exist to address the opportunities which may have been created through devaluation. Many of the poorer countries have exportable resources of minerals, which are supplied on the international market. This may be the good news, but, unhappily, steps were seldom taken to enhance the value of the mineral products through further beneficiation and the production of high-value sophisticated products. That is where the vicious circle comes in: inadequate infrastructure is created, competent and well-trained manpower is not generated, and the result has inevitably been that the GDP slips backwards, and the nation becomes progressively impoverished. To exacerbate the problem, it is unfortunate that the more impoverished a nation becomes, the greater is its birthrate, and hence the greater the need to create wealth at the very time that the nation is becoming poorer and poorer. Within this scenario, one may well reflect that this is exactly what nations on the African Continent are experiencing, namely exploding populations, although most of the poorest nations in the world are found on this continent. Yet they often possess a superior mineral production potential. Africa still suffers from what may be called the colonial influence, in that the developed world has regarded this continent as a source of raw materials to feed its own factories. The colonial powers gave only secondary attention to developing the nation's peoples and its infrastructure, such as railways, roads, harbours, and other services. These problems all naturally fall within the ambit of government interest, and it is therefore obvious that the state should play a dominant role in addressing them. The reasons for governmental involvement in mineral-related research and development differ considerably, depending on the state of industrial development of that country. Thus, in the highly industrialised world, government's interest will lie mostly in the fields of strategic minerals, which may not be economically exploitable. An example would be the exploitation of American low-grade chromites during the Second World War, or minerals which need to be imported from unfriendly or unreliable sources, such that disruption would not be in the national interest. Colonial powers like the United Kingdom and France established R&D facilities to assist, inter alia, in the exploitation of mineral resources in their colonies. The approach of developing countries would differ from that of the industrialised nations, in that their primary quest would be to promote, support and encourage the development of infrastructure, and the establishment of major industries in order to create and provide employment opportunities, as well as to support small operators who cannot afford to undertake their own research and development. On the debit side, it is a sad fact that, however good their intentions may be, underdeveloped countries are invariably unable to provide the requisite financial support to sustain their own research-and-development laboratories. In a high-tech world, the cost of sophisticated equipment is steep and cannot be afforded. Again, the proverbial vicious circle comes into play. The competent researchers find themselves without rewarding employment and would therefore shun such institutions. Recent trends in the developed world have been to privatise research-and-development institutions, the argument being that they should draw closer to the industry they serve, and that the provision of taxpayers' money for strategic purposes is no longer as important as it may have been once. Complete state withdrawal has had its negative effect in that long-range, high-calibre research has tended to be replaced by short-term problem-solving projects. Industries engaged in the minerals business differ somewhat from major ones, like motor, computer or pharmaceutical industries, which are large enough to support their own internal research and development, and whose work is highly confidential, so that any leakage could have disastrous consequences. Furthermore, private companies are answerable to their shareholders and costly long-range, 'blue-sky' research would be difficult to justify. Since mineral research has become of lesser importance in the sophisticated First World, this trend has persisted. On the positive side, R&D institutions which are totally financed by government, suffer because they tend to forget the reason for their existence. They have often become a form of auxiliary to an academic institution where higher degrees are collected by scientific boffins who, in their quest for academic excellence, tend to disregard the benefits that industry may ultimately gain from this research endeavour. The trend in recent years - and South Africa is no exception - has been for the state to progressively reduce its subsidy, whilst at the same time encouraging research organisations [for their ongoing survival] to interact closely with industry, and to conduct work directly for them on a contract basis. Organisations such as CSIRO in Australia, CANMET in Canada, the USBM in the United States and Mintek in South Africa all generate income from the private sector. Management Information System (MIS), is a system using formalised procedures to provide management with appropriate information to make timely and effective decisions. Before developing MIS, first functions of the organisation should be defined and grouped into subsystems. After determining the information required and produced by each system and interaction between subsystems, the related data resources should be structured into a series of databases and files. In this study, the MIS developed for Soma Open Pit Mines, Turkey is described in this respect. First, analyses of the existing system including user requirements and scope of the system are given. Then the designed information system, its subsystems, interaction between subsystems and system structure are presented in detail.

?Wyoming bentonite? has become almost a world-wide trade mark for high quality sodium bentonite. Although bentonite is produced in more than a dozen U.S. states the largest producing area covers Wyoming and adjacent parts of Montana and South Dakota. Bentonite was originally known as Taylorite and later renamed Bentonite by Dr. Sam Knight, the State Geologist of Wyoming. The new name came from the Fort Benton shale member of the Mowry Formation. Bentonite is a clay consisting essentially of the montmorillonite group of minerals. Since bentonite has good ion exchange capabilities, various cat-ions are easily replaced. These cations are usually calcium and sodium; however, magnesium, lithium, potassium, and others can be exchanged. One way of classifying the clay is based on its swelling capacities when wet or added to water. Bentonite having sodium as the dominant exchangeable ion typically has very high swelling capacities and forms gel-like masses when added to water. Bentonite in which exchangeable calcium is more abundant than other ions has much lower swelling properties than sodium varieties.

Ore reserves are often less than 30% of geologic resource estimates that are initially prepared by exploration geologists. Differences of this magnitude between resources and reserves can lead to serious . problems in the early valuation of properties when the geologic resource estimates are interpreted to represent ore reserves and are later found to be misleading and gross overstatements of ore reserves. The geologist can avoid such difficulties by considering the implications of mining, metallurgical recovery, and economics early in the project and by using appropriate qualifiers in the resource statement Examples using typical deposit characteristics are used to demonstrate how cutoff grade, stripping ratio, dilution, mining extraction and metallurgical recovery affect ore reserve estimations.

Heat transfer in partially wet mine airways has been the subject of study for quite some time. Of the available models some are quite empirical while some involve highly complicated computation. Models developed by Amano, Mizuta and Hiramatsu and Banerjee and Chernyak as well as that modified by Misra were evaluated for prediction of the rise in temperature and humidity (mixing ratio ) of partially wet mine airways at four different levels in the Mosaboni Mine of Hindustan Copper Ltd. Measurements of barometric pressure, virgin-rock temperature and changes in dry- and wet-bulb temperatures along a certain length of airway were made. The rise in dry-bulb temperature and mixing ratio of air over the sections were calculated using the three models. The study reveals that calculated values of temperature and moisture content agree within possible rage of experimental error with all the three models in case of three levels with low wetness factor, but the agreement was poor for the relatively more wet airway on the 30th level. Errors in the estimation of fw to the tune of 0.025 can lead to fair error up to 0.94 K in the estimated temperature while alternative ways of estimating the heat transfer coefficient [] can introduce errors up to 1.45 K.

In Australia, Safe Work legislation requires mines to have a documented ‘Safety Case’ explaining how a mine will safely manage all major hazards. A similar requirement is legislated or inferred by regulation in all jurisdictions. For small scale, instabilities leading to day-to-day seismic hazards, a ‘Stability Safety Case’ built around observational methods and measurement triggered responses can be effective because adverse situations are easily identified and the costs of lower control measures are not onerous. Also, if the influence of a volume of yield on the mine load system is small, the response of the system will be more predictable. However, for episodes of large scale mine instability, the hazard derives from the widespread, multi component influence of the event on the mine load system. As the system response depends on interactions between many parts, the resolution of predictions will be lower and situations can arise without local precedent. Further, as episodes of large scale instability change the stiffness and nature of the connectedness between parts of the mine load system, the behavior of the system before the event will be a poor empirical basis for forecasts of event related hazards. Most importantly, Triggered Action Response Plans (TARPs) and ‘traffic light’ warning systems cannot make design choices or identify new hazard phenomena. They are ‘lower’ control measures targeting explicit human-made instability hypotheses. As such, the Safety Cases related to management of hazard from potential large scale seismic events and mine instability cannot rely solely on TARPs. Mines that successfully manage meaningful dynamic instability always acknowledge the ultimate reliance on expert human intuition, knowledge and imagination to appreciate the range of possible hazard scenarios, to make stability hypotheses and propose solutions. Complex analysis, TARPs and measurements are critical steps in the human decision cycle, but only support the making and testing of ‘Stability Hypotheses’ made by expert engineers. Relying on expert skill and judgement as essential components of a Safety Case, however essential, introduces human vulnerabilities. Another challenge is that the expert decision making process is hard to document. Beck et al 2019 first described an organizational and procedural framework for maintenance of an ongoing large-scale ‘Stability Safety Case' where a degree of expert judgement and imagination is needed to manage a seismically active mine. The structured data appreciation process outlined sufficient measurements, analysis and appreciation to confirm the stability state of the mine and was applicable to all underground mines. After several years of implementation in various forms in stoping, caving and room and pillar mines, this update addresses lessons learned and describes some considerations for numerical forecasting to establish a base case, and some challenges for empirical hazard identification.

Two porphyry copper orebodies, the North and Central MM orebodies, have been found through regional and structural geologic works, about 5 Km south of Chuquicamata, under a gravel bed of approximately 100 m and in the west side of the West Fissure. The mineralization is emplaced in a coarse granodioritic porphyry, predominantly with sericitic alteration. In the North MM ore-body, with 200 million metric tons of 1.0% Cu, the mineralization is mainly chalcopyrite, bornite, digenite and molibdenite. In the central MM orebody, with 700 million metric tons of 1.3% Cu, there are large veins of enargite, chalcocite and bornite, the last one increasing in depth, separated by chalcopyrite and pyrite zones; in these veins there are interesting gold and silver values. Both orebodies have an upper enrichment of chalcocite and covellite, with pyrite envelope. According with these characteristics, the MM orebodies could he the upper part, with sericitic alteration, of the Chuquicamata porphyry copper system, displaced by the West Fissure system movements, but we couldn't eliminate the possibility that MM can be a new orebody, different of Chuquicamata.

Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's (H. B. M. & S.) Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for over 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars", left between them. These pillars range up to 100 meters long by 40 meters wide and 15 meters thick. H. B. M. & S. has been successful in removing these pillars through the use of cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel LHD equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has meant that many innovative techniques have been tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined.
