Old tailings from Zn, Au, Cu, and Ni mining operations were characterized. Their mineralogical variation in depth is compared with matching pore water and solids chemistry. A geochemical model was used to predict minerals precipitating from pore water solutions. These are compared with actual secondary minerals occurring. The degree to which the precipitation of secondary minerals controls the sulfate and iron concentration of the pore water was also investigated. The results obtained are related to the selection of the most appropriate modes of tailings deposition.

The Carr Fork mine is located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Bingham or West Mountain District, adjacent to the Bingham open pit copper mine. Applied geology at Carr Fork, by Anaconda Minerals Company personnel, includes detailed geologic mapping and sampling of underground workings, logging and sampling of drill core and cuttings, and the preparation and posting of geologic maps and cross sections for geologic interpretation, ore reserve calculation, mine operations, and long range planning. Accurate and easily understood graphic recording of Carr Fork geology is essential for optimum use by operating and engineering personnel. The design and implementation of exploration, development and definition drilling programs, research into geological spatial relationships, and analysis of structural complexities of the Carr Fork deposit are also integral parts of the applied geology program.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has investigated various factor effects on cab air filtration system performance. Factors experimentally investigated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading (filter flow resistance), recirculation filter use, and wind penetration. Adding an intake pressurizer fan to the filtration system was also investigated. Results indicate that the intake filter efficiency and recirculation filter were the two most influential factors on cab protection performance. Use of a recirculation filter significantly reduced cab penetration over the intake air filter by itself due to the multiplicable filtration of the cab interior air. Cab penetration was also affected to a lesser extent by intake filter loading and air leakage. Adding an intake pressurizer fan notably increased intake airflow and cab pressure while providing only minor changes to cab penetration.

The Rio Piedras Alignment Section 7 of the Tren Urbano is currently being constructed beneath a historic commercial section of San Juan. Different portions of the section are being constructed using open cut, cut-and-cover, New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM), and as tacked drift mined support system. The combination of complex geology, low ground cover, and several innovative construction methods present many challenges to the ground control program. Mining and construction sequences were first developed to minimize ground movements and risk of damage to structures. A unique compensation-grouting program was developed to improve the ground, limit settlement, and recover settlements incurred due to mining.

1- Importance of Shafts for the Exploration and Extraction of Coal Deposits Coal mining in the Federal Republic of Germany is carried out in a depth between 800 and 1200 m below sea level (Fig. 1). The shortest connections underground in a mine and up to the surface are vertical shafts. Such shafts assume, with ventilation, manriding and the winding of material, the most important functions for the maintenance of mining operations. In the German coal mining industry, a difference is made between the main shafts providing a direct access from the surface to the deposits, and the so-called "blindshafts" which serve as a connection between two or several haulage levels underground. Various types of Tertiary (Miocene) lignite occurrences had been formed and alternated with volcano-sedimentary Bigadiç Formation in the field of study, which resides in the middle and eastern parts of Biga Peninsula. The focus of the study is to identify the geochemical and petrologic properties of coal occurrences and the formation mechanism of the deposits. A comparative study of the deposits will also be studied. Biga Peninsula is a very rich zone in terms of both metallic ores and industrial minerals. Most of the metallic deposits and industrial occurrences in the region have been known and mined throughout the history. This richness of the region is related to the volcanic and tectonic activities that have developed during different geological periods. These activities are the main reasons of weathering and alteration phenomenon.

Several controlled recirculation systems are in operation wor1dwide. As an unconventional technique of ventilation the implementation of such a system requires particular safety conditions and a well-founded set of feasibility factors and parameters. On the other hand, many mines in Romania are facing problemms in meeting the growing ventilation demands, so that controlled air recirculation could give an answer. The present paper presents the results of the work in this field, based on a detailed theoretical approach. Parameters wich must to be taken into account were identified and analysed, numerical simulation are carried out and an experimental test-scale model is presented.

During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerized generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all-too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerized reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984; Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of orebodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metals deposits.

A method of improving the efficiency of solid-liquid separation during centrifugal filtration has been developed. It consists of increasing the pressure drop across the filter cake using extraneous means such as pressurizing a filter chamber. This method, which may be referred to as hyperbaric centrifugation, is designed to increase filtration rate during the drainage cycle and, hence, to produce drier cake. In the present communication, the results obtained in a series of batch centrifugal filtration experiments are presented. The results obtained on fine coal and mineral samples show that cake moistures are approximately 50% lower than the case of using ambient pressure.

A probability-based analysis method in conjunction with the finite element structure modeling technique to evaluate an entry system stability is developed. Variability of the rock properties and loading surrounding the entry system is taken into consideration to predict a roof stability by using the probability of failure instead of the common safety factor concept. A dynamic programming is applied to establish a recurrence relationship between the degree of potential roof fall and accumulated roof fall index in an area of interested. A probable distribution of roof fall is assessed by using a developed computer program, RFSTAB. The assessment of the roof falling boundary in the longwall entry system is used as the example to illustrate the procedure and effectiveness of this analysis method

The discarded phosphatic clays from mining operations have historically been stored behind earthen dams for long periods of time before any reclamation was accomplished. In efforts to expedite the dewatering and reclamation of the clay ponds, the phosphate industry explored alternatives to conventional clay disposal practices. One alternative, employed by CF Industries, Inc., combines the clay and the discarded sand prior to disposal behind earthen dams. The sand encourages the clays to 'give up' trapped water more readily resulting in enhanced consolidation behavior. This paper provides an overview of the sand-clay mix process including the reclamation of sand-clay disposal areas.

The electrochemical behavior of massive chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) electrodes has been studied in the absence and-in the presence of mesophilic microorganisms, using cyclic voltametry as analytical technique. The culture was principally formed for Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. The results showed that the reactivity of the chalcopyrite gradually increased with the bacterial treatment. The anodic dissolution process of the chalcopyrite treated with microorganisms was related to the breaking of passive layers when the applied potential increased. The analysis of the surface products showed that the chalcopyrite was covered with a superficial film avoided its dissolution during the bioleaching test. So, the rest potential of the bioleached samples increased possibly as consequence of its superficial transformation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a novel technique to control methane in underground mines by using methane oxidizing microorganisms termed methanotrophs. Coalbed methane has been responsible for many mine disasters and will continue to be a safety obstacle to mining deeper coal seams. Deeper seams of coal contain more methane gas, and better strategies for removing the methane will need to be developed. Methanotrophic microorganisms offer a novel alternative since they physically remove the methane, are commonly found in soils, and already have been found to exist in many foreign coal mines. Proposed applications of this concept include the inertization of buffer zones separating active mining areas from sealed gobs, reducing ventilation from ventilated gobs and reducing methane content from longwall gobs. Current work includes an assessment of the abundance of naturally occurring methanotrophs in U.S. mines, testing the amount of methane that various types of microorganisms can consume, studying the effects or use of the byproduct gases, and finally developing practical appl ications of this biotechnology to coal mining. This paper reports on the initial laboratory testing that measured the quantity of methane consumed by two types of methanotrophic microorganisms. Average rates of methane consumption were between 1 and 4 ml/hour in column flow tests. A possible gob application may require that 750 cfm of methane be consumed during periods of maximum outgassing. It is premature at this time to accurately scale from laboratory to mine application.

Many of the wastes produced by modern steel plants are pulps or sludges containing significant concentrations of iron and displaying some ferromagnetic characteristics. These waste materials are often suited to treatment by magnetic cycloning to produce a high solids content underflow and a clean water overflow. Alternatively in the classification mode, the magnetic cyclone can produce a high iron underflow product for recycling by discarding fine non-magnetic material to the overflow. Results for the treatment of a variety of steel plant wastes in 5.0cm, 2.5cm and 1.25cm diameter cyclones, operating with and without an applied magnetic field, are presented. It is demonstrated that the magnetic cyclone increases solids recovery to the underflow product, especially at finer particle sizes and for higher solids content feed pulps.

Studies were carried out to determine whether filtration rate changes observed in an iron ore concentrator were due to variations in particle shape. It was confirmed that ores mined from different locations differed in filtration rates by as much as 60%. However, when image analysis was used to quantify the shapes of the individual particles in the filtration feed, it was found that the particle shapes showed almost no variation, and the shapes did not correlate with the filtration rate. It was also determined that the filtration rate variations were not caused by changes in particle size distribution. These results suggest that the differences in filtration rate are due to factors other than size and shape, such as surface chemistry.

Introduction The endeavours to mechanise the shaft sinking operations have led to the development of shaft boring using a V-Mole. The method implies competent ground and a pilot hole of sufficient verticality. This connects the top and the bottom of the shaft and serves for air ventilation and the transport of mullock. The shaft boring machine - nick name V-Mole - with a general pattern similar to a tunnel-borer reames the pilot hole to the designed diameter of the shaft. (Figure 1) The excavating of the rock, the removal of the mullock from the face and the lining of the shaft wall are done simultaneously. If they can be done also continuously this than creates a high potential of productivity. The verticality of the shaft can be garanteed due to the laser beam guided steering system. The diameter of the shaft is variable in steps of 0.5 m between 6.0 and 10 m in accordance with the need. It decides the capacity of the V-Mole to be applied. The depth of the shaft does not depend on the machine. It is practically unlimited as long as a suitable pilot hole is available. Up to 1988 almost 12.656 m of shaft have been drilled on 40 individual projects in Germany and the U.S.A. using a V-Mole. The rocks penetrated were Carboniferous sediments consisting of Sandstones, Shales, Conglomerates and Coal seams. The average uniaxial compressive strength was in the range of 300 - 700 Mpa with a maximum of 1700 Mpa in some singular sandstones.

Vibration screens are commonly used not only in classifying bulk material but also in dewatering it. The lack of a comprehensive physical theory of dewatering often leads to difficulties in the design and operation of the vibration screens. Firstly, the dewatering of bulk material will be shown, based on a physical model. Because of the oscillatory motion of the liquid in the bulk, the inertial force of the accelerated liquid and the dripping of water out of the bulk or screen must be taken into special consideration. The physical model put forward shows the effect of the various operations parameters of dewatering screens. The comparison between dewatering theory and practice will be shown by measurements using coal, limestone, etc. Dewatering measurements, which have been conducted on a vibration screen, demonstrate that different vibration frequencies and rates of acceleration lead to different residual moistures. Finally, the possibilities of improving vibration dewatering will be described.

Miners have long known that rock noise, or the popping and cracking of the rock commonly heard during mining, can indicate instability of the mine structure. For many years, miners have "listened" to the rock talk and many times have interpreted changes in rock noise activity to be a warning of failure and have retreated from the potential failure area. Microseismics, or the study of rock noises, was begun in the early 1940s partly because of this historical fact. Microseismics is based on using geophysical equipment to detect and analyze rock noises on audible and subaudible levels. Thus, these systems are much more sensitive than the human ear and "hear" even more of the rock "talk" than do miners. Research has shown that micro-seismics can be used to precisely locate portions of a working area that are generating rock noise, and that rock noise release rate information from each area can be used to analyze its stability. On the basis of research results, microseismic systems are now commercially available and have been purchased and installed in many mines around the world. Introduction When a rock mass is subjected to changing stress conditions, such as those caused by mining, small-scale adjustments occur within the rock that release seismic energy. When this energy is in the audible range it is called rock noise. Those areas where stress changes occur are also the areas of the structure most likely to fail. Individual rock noises can be detected and analyzed to determine their precise location relative to the mine structure. Over a period of time plots of this data provide a pictorial representation of where stress changes are occurring. This is because rock noise activity tends to concentrate in those structure areas most actively adjusting to the changing stresses. Since these areas are the most likely to fail, they can be pinpointed and mapped relative to the structure. Rock noise rates, or the number of rock noises occurring per unit of time, also tend to vary dramatically before failure. Thus, the ability to locate the source of individual rock noises provides a means of determining where failure may occur, and rate counting within each area offers a means of assessing when failure may occur. This information, properly treated, can be used to avoid, control, or warn of impending failure. Successful applications of this technique have provided recent impetus to the effort of developing microseismics into a practical, reliable, and economically feasible tool. The phenomenon of naturally occurring rock noise was discovered in 1938 by Obert and Duvall (1939) who were measuring seismic velocities in mine pillars. Seismic energy other than what they were generating continually registered on their recording equipment. Further study by these researchers showed that the extraneous seismic energy being recorded was from rock noises that were being generated within the rock in highly stressed areas. Pursuing this interesting phenomena both in the laboratory and in the field, Obert and Duvall documented the dramatic change in rock noise rate before failure (Obert, 1941). They also established the fact that, in many instances, rock burst failures could be predicted by monitoring and listening to the rock noise activity in rock-burst-prone areas (Obert and Duvall, 1945). These early efforts clearly showed that microseismics had great potential as a tool for measuring or estimating mine structure stability. Extended testing, however, showed that sometimes rock bursts occurred with no apparent microseismic warning, and that at other times sharp increases in microseismic data were not accompanied by failure. Also, because precise location of individual rock noises was not possible at that time, one never knew where the failure was going to occur, only that failure near the observation point was likely. Thus, while the technique clearly offered promise, it was not considered practical then. In the mid-1960s, the Bureau of Mines undertook a new research effort to improve the microseismic technique. Major improvements were judged possible mainly because new and vastly improved electronic and system components had become available as an offshoot of space program instrument development. Thus, in 1967, development of a multichannel, broad band, microseismic system began (Blake and Leighton, 1970). Application of this system in rock-burst-prone mines showed it worked well and provided the incentive to develop methods whereby the source location of individual rock noises could be easily and directly calculated (Leighton and Blake, 1970; Leighton and Duvall, 1972; Redfern and Munson, 1982). El desmuestre de un criadero tiene un buen número de finalidades. En la fase inicial es necesario definir los límites del yacimiento y el contenido o ley del mineral hasta el punto de que pueda ser establecido si es, de hecho, un yacimiento económico. Igualmente, las muestras tienen que ser generadas de forma tal que las evaluaciones geológicas y metalúrgicas puedan ser Ilevadas a cabo. Con las minas actuales grandes y complejas a cielo abierto los métodos de desmuestre único deberían de ser inadecuados. La perforación por diamante, la perforación por percusión, pozos subterráneos y galerías, juegan todos conjuntamente un papel parcial en la definición total del yacimiento. En la mina Twin Buttes, de la Anamax Mining Company, el desmuestre y la definición del yacimiento conducirán eventualmente a la existencia de tres plantas metalúrgicas de proceso y, quizá a, una operación de minería subterránea. Fue puesto en marcha un concentrador de sulfuros de 30.000 tons. por día en Septiembre de 1969 y una planta de 10.000 toneladas diarias de lixiviación de óxido fue puesta en servicio en Mayo de 1975. La finalidad de esta presentación es la de exponer históricamente el desmuestre del yacimiento que ha sido Ilevado a cabo en Twin Buttes, describir brevemente el criadero, y exponer los métodos analíticos corrientemente utilizados para ayudar al geólogo, al metalúrgico y al diseñador de la mina en sus respectivas evaluaciones.
