Political events during the past decade have caused businesses throughout the world to think globally. Countries once closed to free market enterprises are now open and seeking out foreign investment to help improve the well being of their populations. The mining industry has always been a global one. Today, though, the industry has become even more global. The driving forces behind this include the opening up of higher grade, lower cost mineral deposits in undeveloped and developing nations. In addition, permitting delays in the United States, coupled with stricter environmental guidelines and a general anti-mining attitude, have forced the mining industry to look outside US borders. The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) took as the theme of its seventh annual professional program "Economic Globalization of the Mining Industry." About 100 people attended the conference held in Arlington, VA in late March. Speakers included members of the investment community, academia, government and the mining industry.

Cluster analysis is used to design grade soft-sensors in a rougher flotation plant and a ball mill overload soft-sensor. Soft-sensors are virtual sensors which either replace unavailable actual sensors or infer measurements for non existing sensors. In the case of the grade soft-sensors clustering serves to determine clusters of related operating points. To each cluster there corresponds an ARMAX model structure whose parameters are estimated using only the points in the corresponding cluster. Thus a much better correlation is found than if all the data points were used for a global model. The problem of identifying clusters when the measurement of the real sensor is not available is addressed. In the case of the overload soft-sensor, variables were selected which are related to overload, either from a phenomenological point of view or according to operator experience. Different clusters are formed, some of which are identified as determining an overload condition or a possibility of such condition. Each of these clusters has a set of operating conditions which suggests the corrective action to be taken when necessary. Both kinds of soft-sensors are tested with industrial plant data and promising preliminary results are obtained.

CODELCO-CHILE, the world's largest copper producer, began an integrated study of the informatics situation in the corporation at the end of 1980. As a result, a five years strategic Systems Plan was elaborated and approved by top Corporate management. Main points in this plan were: a systems architecture with information integration to the top level management; a higher degree of information technology in the production areas, an optional systems development resources utilization and a high profitability of the plan itself. During the study phase a series of theoretical definitions were fixed and used as a basis for the plan's design. A "common systems" approach was chosen as the development strategy instead of corporate systems or separate divisional efforts. Top management should be highly involved in the revisions of the plan, as well as qualified users should be chosen as project managers. The systems architecture should grant the information integration to the corporate level, in order to support an integrated planning and administration environment for the corporation. A total of 15 projects were defined, involving 570,000 man-hours and shifting the development efforts towards the production and production services areas. The paper presents a critical evaluation of the whole process, showing its good and bad aspects and a positive global balance. It also points some suggestions and hints to any corporation who wishes to get involved in a similar experience.

The production of radioactive and reactive metals, such as plutonium, uses various pyrometallurgical techniques that generate significant quantities of waste salts contaminated with hazardous, reactive or radioactive materials. Health concerns, environmental regulations and economic considerations require proper mitigation processes to recover the valuable components and for recycling or unrestricted release of these salts. The Oxygen Sparging Process converts soluble metal halides, such as chromium-, plutonium-, cerium chlorides, into insoluble oxides and/or oxychlorides which can be consolidated and separated for long-term storage or further processing. The matrix salt phase, viz. calcium and/or alkali chlorides, are clean after oxygen sparging and fit for recycling. This method has been described and its optimized parameters discussed to show that RCRA regulated elements, such as, chromium, lead, cadmium, etc. report to the consolidated phase making the salt recyclable. Salt Scrub Reduction Process for the recovery of radioactive and RCRA metals from the waste salts has been developed. The process uses a Ca-Ga intermetallic alloy which recovers over 98 percent of the reactive metals. The matrix salt phase in this process, viz. calcium or alkali metal chlorides, are clean after salt scrub reduction.

Case Studies in Open Pit Design Using Whittle 4D will be discussing the following four examples: 1) Optimization of process plant design using Whittle 4D as a sizing tool. In this case, the home office and project team had different views of the size of the final project. The home office wanted to reduce the size of the project to reduce capital expenditure, while the project team suggested a larger project. Whittle 4D was used to determine Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return using the Whittle scheduler (FDAN) to schedule many alternatives, and calculate the NPV and return for each alternative. 2) Comparison of pit optimization methods: Lerchs-Grossman vs floating cone. Many pits are developed based on floating cone economics. A comparison of methods in one large gold mine resulted in the stripping ratio of the pit being reduced by 10% in the Whittle 4D optimization as compared to the floating cone optimization. 3) Pit optimization to determine if a new mill is justified. A large heap leach gold and silver mine needed to determine if a new mill was justified. The planning and scheduling would take several man months if completed without pit optimization and scheduling software. Whittle 4D software proved to be very effective in providing optimized pits and a mine schedule in a short time frame. 4) Pit optimization to determine how to mine and size. Open pit optimization determined where the underground operation should start, and whether the material should be processed by milling or heap leaching. One of our clients asked for help in determining where the pit should end and a new underground operation start. We used Whittle 4D to help determine where the pit should end and where to go underground. In addition the operation needed to determine how to process the material.

Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. On September 13, 1973 MAPCO Inc. leased from Pocahontas Land Corporation an 18,000 acre tract of coal lands in Eastern Kentucky's Martin County (See Figure 1.). In July, 1974 initial run of mine coal shipments commenced and in April, 1976 shipments of a 12,500 BTU, less than 1% sulphur, washed coal was being shipped. Results of exploration demonstrated that large quantities of overburden would have to be moved. MAPCO decided to invest in large surface mining equipment to tackle the job.

Since 1992 the Grasberg Mine, located in the remote regions of Indonesia, has utilized the Modular Mining System. Over the last several years, major steps have been taken to maximize this productivity enhancement system. These steps include; the Automated Lineup, the Linear Program upgrade, tracking of Mean Time Between Failure, a MEDS system interface, a VMIS system interface, and implementation of the new Graphical Operator Interface Console with Global Positioning, This application of new technology and innovation has lead to improved performance, understanding and reporting, as well as the quality of the Indonesian Engineers. These efforts have contributed 10 Grasberg achieving one of the lowest mining costs in the copper industry.

The present interest in beryllium seems to be the result of recent developments in the uses for the metal discovery of significant deposits of disseminated beryllium ores, and the development of chemical and physical processing techniques, for recovering the beryllium values contained in these ores. At the present time most of the new and potential uses for beryllium are in the research stage of development and are not consuming large quantities of the metal. However, they do point to an expanding market. Interesting new discoveries or extensions of previously known deposits have been reported during the past year from the Boomer Mine in Colorado, the Mesquite area of Nevada,, the Chemalloy pegmatites in Canada, the Brazilian and African pegmatite districts and from other areas, However, this paper will discuss only four of the beryllium deposits, which appear to be of special significance due to their; large reserves of ore and promise economic development. The new chemical and physical processing techniques are not discussed in detail, but it should be stressed that the development of an economical process to handle the pegmatitic and low-grade non-pegmatitic beryllium ores is of great importance to the development of the beryllium industry. Scientists in both government and industry are co-operating in this effort and it is expected that commercial processes will be developed in the near future.

A method of hand-calculating the air-cooling requirements of a conceptualized underground mining operation is presented for the reader's orientation. Separate air heat load calculations were conducted for adiabatic compression, electromechanical equipment, wallrock, broken rock, groundwater, and blasting operations. The air heat sources were calculated for four mining levels under conditions representative of a typical planned mining operation at depth. The total heat gain on each level will approximate the level air-cooling requirements. The results of these hand calculations can be further modified by the use of mine ventilation computer software that refine the heat-source calculations, predict underground ambient air temperatures, and establish the air-cooling requirements of a mine. INTRODUCTION The principal mining method employed is a modified vertical crater retreat (VCR) blasthole operation. Typical scopes range from 20 to 40 feet wide, 75 to 100 feet long, and 100 feet in height. Six and one-half inch blastholes are drilled with an "in the hole" hammer drill. Eight-foot high horizontal rounds are blasted down. Mucking of ore from the undercut to orepass is done with LHD equipment operated from a remote control station. Backfill includes hydraulically placed tailings with cement, and waste rock when available. Stope access is from ramp sub-levels on 50-foot vertical intervals. Crosscuts are ramped down to the first stope cut 25 feet below the sub-level elevation. Then the crosscuts are raised by taking down the back when each stope cut is completed, until an elevation 25 feet above the sub-level is reached. The crosscuts are filled with tailings, and/or waste rock. See Figure 1. Typically, a two-pronged approach to defining the air-cooling requirements is conducted. First, the principal sources that make up the air heat load are individually hand-calculated. Second, projections of mine heat load are calculated by utilizing computer modeling techniques. This paper discusses the first method (hand calculations) of determining the individual components of heat flow into the mine. CALCULATED AIR HEAT LOADS Adiabatic Compression The plans for the mine include delivery of 300,000 cfm of air to ventilate the lower level operation. This is equivalent to approximately 200 cfm/ton of rock produced (300,000 cfm/1500 tpd of ore and waste). As air flows down a shaft, with no heat interchange between the shaft and air and no evaporation of moisture taking place, the air is heated in the same way as if it were compressed in a compressor. Dry air increases in temperature about 5.4°F per 1000 feet. One BTU is added to each pound of air for every 778 feet of decrease in elevation, or is subtracted for the same elevation increase. For dry air, the dry-bulb temperature change is 1/(0.24 x 778) = 0.00535°F/ft., or 1°F/187 ft. elevation. Auto-compression may be masked by the presence of other heating or cooling sources, such as shaft wallrock, groundwater, air and water lines, electrical facilities, etc. The major factors influencing the temperature of the air delivered underground by a shaft are (1) the night time cool air temperature's effect on the rock or lining of the shaft, (2) temperature gradient of ground rock related to depth, and (3) evaporation of moisture within the shaft which increases the latent temperature and decreases the sensible temperature. [Calculation For Adiabatic Heat of Compression] a. Assumptions: 1. Three hundred thousand cfm of fresh air at 3000 level has increased in temperature during the summertime to the point where it has little available cooling power. Air-cooling will be required on 3000 Level and below. 2. Elevation of 3000 Level is approximately +1000 ft. above sea level.

The use of clay granules as carriers for pesticides dates from the early 1940's and by the present day represents a business conservatively estimated at between 200 - 300 thousand tons / year in the U.S. alone. Aside from economic and specific target pest efficacy advantages, the use of clay granules as pesticide carriers also delivers a number of environmental benefits which will be reviewed. Topics to be discussed will include: 1) drift control (versus liquid sprays), 2) mobility (in the environment), 3) worker safety, and 4) transportation (spill) safety.

During the next 15 years, US coal production is expected to double, with the increased production evenly divided between the East and the West. Along with greater production, coal export markets should increase dramatically from East, West, and Gulf Coast ports. The annual overseas export capacity of US coal-loading terminals is expected to rise from 147.1 Mt (162.1 million st) in 1981 to a minimum of 278.1 Mt (306.6 million st) in 1985, according to the US Maritime Administration. Increased coal production and use will lead to more development of import and export terminals, a vital link in the coal transportation chain. With continually escalating capital costs and the competitive markets that the terminals will serve, a well designed and efficient terminal is necessary. This article begins a two-part series that presents concepts presently used in coal export terminal design. Part I looks at site selection factors and equipment needs, while Part II will examine environmental considerations in building a terminal as well as typical capital and operating costs. The world is nearing the end of the oil era. In a few years oil will not be available to sustain the growth rate and increasing standard of living we have known in our lifetime. The big question is what energy era are we moving into? With the decline of readily available oil reserves and rapidly increasing prices, many countries are trying to switch to alternate energy forms. While intensive efforts to find new oil reserves continue, alternate energy sources such as natural gas, coal, synthetic fuels, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power are being developed. Recent indications are that coal is expected to bridge the energy gap over the next 25-30 years until the technology and economics of the alternate energy forms reach satisfactory levels. Use of coal for energy is receiving strong attention due to its long-term availability (200-300 years minimum), relative ease of development, and its low cost per unit of power produced. By the year 2000, it is expected that 25% of world energy supply will be met by direct coal combustion and possibly another 5-10% by synthetic fuel from coal. Coal's expanding share in the world energy market, along with an increase in coking coal requirements, will result in a large increase in the world's seaborne coal trade. Recent statistics and projections for the future are shown in Table 1. This phenomenal development rate includes increases in both coking and thermal coal requirements. Because of the rapid increase of seaborne coal trade during the last 10 years and the even greater projected increase of trade to 2000, various sectors of the coal industry are faced with enormous technical challenges and huge investments in equipment, land, transportation systems, and port facilities. Very large bulk terminals are under development throughout the world. Latest surveys indicate that there are about 30 new coal export and import terminals under consideration and at least 30 existing terminals have expansion programs planned or underway. With the high cost of borrowed capital and rapid inflation rates there is great emphasis on new planning and design techniques to minimize capital and operating costs of coal transportation systems. Terminals A total coal supply system can be considered to consist of one or more mines; a train, barge, truck, or other haulage system; an export terminal; a fleet of bulk carriers; a receiving terminal; and possibly, local inland distribution networks that include barges and railways. Terminals, though only a small link in the total transportation system, play a key role in overall system efficiency. At ports or inland distribution centers, terminals act as transportation links bringing trains, ships, barges, or trucks together for cargo transfer and temporary storage. A well-designed terminal can provide maximum independence between two modes of transportation and optimum freedom for intermodal interference. A terminal acts as a buffer between the two transportation modes by providing sufficient storage capacity so a ship need not wait for its cargo on, for example, a train-by-train basis, but can load immediately from the ready stock. Similarly, a train need not wait for a ship to unload its contents but can dump immediately into storage. A terminal also can be used to properly mix various types of coal to satisfy a buyer's requirements. Consider the relative value of various production and transport segments for a typical steam coal

No economic activity would take place without human ingenuity, driven by our needs and wants. Economic activity is made possible by the energy from fossil and other energy sources, our technological hardware, the buildings and infrastructure made from materials such as metals, plastics, wood, water, and numerous industrial minerals. Industrial minerals are difficult to define; however, they generally include utilitarian minerals other than metals and fuels. Some of the industrial minerals form an exception to this categorization and, as explained elsewhere in this book, belong to more than one category because of the manner in which they are used. Industrial minerals are so numerous, and their applications so ubiquitous that they often do not receive the attention given to metals or fuels. Nevertheless, without industrial minerals, many of our most fundamental economic activities such as construction of our cities and towns, control of floods, transportation of our people, the search for minerals, the smelting of metals, and the delivery of supplies of clean water would be impossible. How then do we assess the economic importance of such a variety of materials lumped together under the general designation of industrial minerals? The price per ton or the total amount consumed do not satisfactorily explain the relative value of these materials to the economy. For example, the current price of limestone is about $5/t and the price of fluorspar is about $190/t. However, nearly 1.1 Gt of limestone, valued at about $5.5 billion, are consumed in the United States annually, compared with 590 kt of fluorspar, valued at about $1 12 million. It would not, however, be accurate to conclude that the mineral with the higher total value is always more economically important. Many other questions must be answered before making judgments of this type. These questions include how many people are employed in the production, processing, and distribution of the mineral? How is the mineral used? Is it partly or entirely imported? Where do the imports come from? How is the mineral transported? Is the mineral considered critical to national security? Is there a substitute material available in case the mineral supply is interrupted? Where would the substitute be produced? What would be the basic material from which the substitute will be produced? Even when these questions have been answered satisfactorily, the economic importance of the mineral is not completely known until the consuming sectors are studied as well. For example, even though the manufacture of fighter aircraft is vital to the national security, it employs only a fraction of the number of people employed in the housing and construction industry or the automobile industry or the appliance industry. Mineral commodities consumed in these latter sectors of the economy are more significant than those consumed in the production of fighter aircraft, because nearly two-thirds of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on the purchasing power of individual consumers. In comparison, the entire defense budget accounts for only 6% of the GDP. There is no easy way to present the importance of industrial minerals to the US economy because most minerals have diverse applications and products made from industrial minerals often con- tribute to the production of other goods and services. One way of highlighting the value of a mineral would be to relate it to the GDP reported by categories such as construction, machinery, stone, clay and glass products, electrical and electronic equipment, paper and allied products, and chemicals and allied products. These GDP categories represent industries fundamental to the economy totaling $644 billion, or about 12% of the GDP in 1990. However, these categories are not convenient for discussion of the many minerals that are used in our complex economy. In a general way, minerals are the 5% of our economy that make the other 95% possible. This chapter, therefore, discusses a selected few industrial minerals to illustrate their importance to various sectors of the economy.

Slurry or slimes dispersion is a critical factor controlling the efficiency of sulfide mineral comminution and concentration operations. The PQ Corporation has conducted innovative sodium silicate-based studies to determine the effects of enhanced dispersion on whole ore grinding and flotation behaviors and on downstream separation and cleaning steps. The work has advanced the understanding of the role of pulp rheology on the optimization of commercial grinding, agitation leaching, and flotation operations. This paper reviews the role of sodium silicate as a selective wetting agent and surface charge modifier in sulfide mineral systems, and discusses the results of silicate experiments conducted on various ores of copper and molybdenum, gold, platinum-palladium, and copper zinc, all of which contain clay minerals or highly floatable gangue constituents.

This paper discusses the process utilized by the City of Portland Oregon’s Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) to procure and compensate Impregilo-SA Healy (I/H)for the West Side Willamette River Combined Sewer Over?ow (CSO) Project. The contract method is a three-phase process consisting of qualifications based contractor procurement, pre-construction phase design assistance/construction planning, and facility construction where the contractor is compensated on a cost reimbursable-fixed fee basis. The paper focuses on pre-construction phase lessons learned from the development of the contract general conditions, establishment of a construction budget and cost control program, incorporation of contractor recommended design changes, and development of a subcontractor procurement program for construction.

Coal preparation for a company having several sources of coal and several contracts for sale of coal was modeled. The objective was to minimize wash loss by selecting the quantity of coal to be supplied from each source and the appropriate washbox specific gravity setting to yield contract quality for a given shipment. constraints inposed by silo and stockpile sizes, plant and rehandling capacities, and varying coal quality specifications were included in the model. Solution is by iterative linear programming on an Apple II.

A gravimetric method for measuring rates of capillary rise in powders was explored. Methods to improve reproducibility and consistency of the results were investigated. In particular, the effects of particle size and packing uniformity were addressed. Studies of the wetting behavior of both spherical glass beads and irregularly shaped synthetic graphite particles by various organic liquids were carried out. Standardized procedures for bed preparation will be described. The applicability of the Washburn equation for surface energy evaluation in such systems will be discussed. A detailed account is given of the spectral ratio laboratory method for the determination of seismic velocity and attenuation through rock cores under simulated in-situ stress conditions. An account of a computer program called AUTOQ is described for automatic processing of a complete set of laboratory results. Some of these results are shown and discussion is directed to- wards the suitability of in-situ velocity or attenuation measurements in determining rockmass condition or stress regime.

Explanations for commodity price levels (or movements) commonly focus on the fundamentals of supply and demand otherwise they are simply assigned to speculative activity. Comparisons of metal-price histories to monetary and other economic data support the argument that the supply of and demand for money are no less important in the determination of price than are the supply and demand of the commodity itself. That these relationships should exist is evident in the price identity and they are consistent with monetary theory.
