Mine managers need useful data to support production and maintenance decisions; for example, to evaluate the performance of replacement components. Today, managers rely solely on past experience, supervisors, opinions, and time studies. Our paper describes the concepts and algorithms we are developing for an automatic, intelligent decision support system (IDSS) that will aid managers by reducing and analyzing large amounts of, monitoring system sensor data and report only key production and maintenance information.. IDSS contains a pattern recognition, subsystem (IDSS/PRS) prototype to report graphical trends in traditional time study elements. We are designing. and prototyping a knowledge representation subsystem, using Knowledge Craft Tools, that will learn and adapt to the dynamic mine environment and reason about the recognized patterns using representations of manager's knowledge, equipment, capabilities, and mine layout and operating procedures. This subsystem will reduce, large quantities of time study type information to key issues that interest different managers.

OSIRIS is a continuous monitoring system for respirable dust which has been specifically designed for mining and related industries. By using the latest microprocessor technology, OSIRIS provides a sophisticated dust measuring system which is a cost effective alternative to regular gravimetric sampling. The system is certified intrinsically safe for use underground. Up to eight underground OSIRIS sensors can be controlled and monitored by a single IBM PC computer located at the mine surface. This computer provides continuous and instantaneous information about the dust concentrations at the sites being monitored. Information is available in tabular and graphical form. The paper gives details of proving trials of the OSIRIS system in some UK coal mines. During these trials, adjacent OSIRIS sensors placed on the same underground roadway cross-section gave virtually identical results. Throughout a good correlation was obtained with conventional gravimetric dust samples. The OSIRIS equipment proved both reliable and easy to operate. This paper reviews the state-of -the-art techniques for estimating the duration of post- mining subsidence arising from different mining techniques and evaluates existing post-mining liability systems in the United States and abroad. For each mining technique (room-and-pillar and longwall) the mechanism of subsidence development is examined and the critical factors influencing the duration of subsidence are evaluated. These are followed by a comprehensive summary of field data on the duration of subsidence movements collected in various parts of the world. Using this information, graphical charts are developed to depict the relationship between the time duration and critical controlling factors. Also included are any mathematical relationships that may exist between the different variables. Finally, a survey of current state, federal and foreign legislation on mine operator liability time spans is provided. These laws are evaluated for their applicability in light of the data on duration of residual subsidence. On the basis of this evaluation, guidelines are suggested for the establishment of the mine operator liability structure for the United States.

Lost foam casting is a process in which a polymeric material is formed into the shape of the part to be cast. Parts that are more complex are fabricated by simply gluing several patterns together. The pattern is then coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Finally, hot metal is poured into the pattern, evaporating the expanded polystyrene and taking the shape of the coating shell. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably landfilled. In this study, a process was developed for the recovery of expanded polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and pneumatic separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene. Key words: Casting, Lost foam process, Expanded polystyrene recovery

"INTRODUCTION Shield tunnelling is often used in constructing underground infrastructure in cities due to the ability to limit settlements and damage to existing buildings. However, in an urban environment with soft overburden and buildings on pile foundations such as the North-South Line project in Amsterdam, there is a tendency to design the tunnel well below the surface and below the pile tip level in order to reduce interaction between tunnelling process and piles. This results in deep tunnels and deep station boxes. When the tunnels are located close to the surface and above the pile tip level, this would reduce the required depth of the station boxes and the construction cost. Moreover, other benefits of shallow tunnels are the low operational cost in the long-term and shorter traveling time from the surface to the platforms. Still, the tunnels should be constructed in such a manner that existing buildings are not structurally damaged, which results in a minimum required distance between tunnelling process and existing buildings. In this paper, the extent of the area that is influenced by tunnelling will be investigated in order to determine the limit distance from tunnelling to existing foundations without inducing too large building deformation. From analysing empirical data of many shield tunnels, Peck (1969) firstly presented the settlement trough on the surface induced by tunnelling in soft soil as a Gaussian distribution. This is also confirmed by other authors (Cording and Hansmire, 1975; Mair et al., 1993; Ahmed and Iskander, 2010). In this study, the Gaussian curve is used to investigate the ground movement when tunnelling in order to find the effects on existing structures. Based on the results from centrifuge test and empirical data, Mair et al. (1993) showed that the subsurface settlement profile distributes as the Gaussian curve also. The width of settlement trough at the depth z depends on the depth of the tunnel z0 and a coefficient K depending on depth. Other studies by Moh et al. (1996), Grant and Taylor (2000) and Jacobsz (2003) based on Mair et al. (1993) proposed a limited change of K in various kinds of soil."

In December of 1999, Newmont Mining Corporation’s Eastern Nevada Operations commissioned its commercial biooxidation facility. The commercial biooxidation facility is a refractory gold whole ore heap process that uses bacteria to assist with the oxidation of sulfide minerals thus liberating occluded gold for further processing by cyanide for gold extraction. Before the commercial biooxidation facility was started, a decade of research went in to developing this state-of-the-art process. During final design and construction of the commercial facility a decline in gold price necessitated cost saving and project scope changes. As a result, the biooxidation process experienced many challenges. Some of the more significant challenges include poor heap permeability due to haul truck stacking, unhealthy bacteria population due to a lack of solution aeration, and insufficient biooxidation time because of limited pad space and high carbonate content in the ore. This paper discusses the many challenges encountered and addressed during the first 2-3 years of commercial biooxidation operation.

Hanford Reservation, in the State of Washington, with its deep basalt formations, is one of the three sites recommended by the Department of Energy for detailed investigations in order to select the first nuclear waste repository in the United States. Information obtained from several deep bore-holes drilled at Hanford indicates that the underground facility can be developed in one of the major basalt flows belonging to the Grande Ronde Formation in the Columbia Plateau, at depths greater than 3200 ft. One of the main concerns in the underground repository design is the achievement of acceptable environmental conditions during the development and the operation of the repository. For this, ventilation and air-conditioning are of prime importance and should be fully addressed. Besides the factors that determine the airflow requirements to meet the personnel and equipment operation needs, there are two major concerns that impact on the ventilation system design: the temperature of the in situ virgin basalt rock and the influx of groundwater. These two factors are related by the fact that the groundwater has the same temperature as the rock itself and they both constitute main sources of heat underground. Current information indicates that the temperature of the virgin rock at a depth of around 990 m (3250 ft) is 52°C (12S°F). However, there are some indications that the rock temperature at the selected horizon might be higher. This paper addresses the impact of the virgin rock temperature on the ventilation system and air-cooling requirements. Graphs with heat loads and cooling required for different rock temperatures have been prepared for a given model and network, using computer techniques for simulating the climatic parameters.

The mineral processing engineer must have some knowledge of mineral identification, and the greater his knowledge in this field, the greater will be his potential to do his own specialty well. Most metal-bearing ores and industrial minerals require processing of some kind to produce a salable product or a material suitable for further processing. The types of treatment are many, but each one is aimed at separating a mineral or family of minerals from others. Obviously, then, it is basic to all mineral processing to identify the minerals present in the raw material and in intermediate and final products resulting from processing. Very often the mineral processing engineer will enter planning while exploration of a mineral prospect is going on. He will examine hand specimens, drill cores and cuttings, bulk samples, and materials in place. He must identify the valuable minerals, their occurrence and associations with other minerals, and the identity of diluents or host rock. An exact and detailed knowledge of the raw material will usually suggest the treatment processes that should be investigated in the development of the most suitable scheme for that particular raw material in that particular location. Physical properties of a mineral often lead directly to a process for separating that mineral from others. Some well-known examples of these are: magnetic separations for such minerals as magnetite, rutile, ilmenite; gravity separations for gold, silver, galena. cassiterite; flotation separation for most sulfides; distillation of mercury from cinnabar; and selective dissolution in specific solvents such as halite or sylvite in water, gold and silver in cyanide solutions, copper oxides, carbonates, sulfates and silicates in dilute sulfuric acid. These processes and many others are described in detail elsewhere in the Hand¬book and so it is not appropriate to give details here, except to emphasize that processing is aided greatly by complete mineral identi¬fication. Developing a treatment scheme for a new mineral discovery is an exciting assignment fag the mineral processing engineer, but much more of the usual work relates to quality control in existing plants. Here too, mineral identification is important. Some processing is aimed toward producing an end product which will meet exacting specifica¬tions regarding purity or allowable diluents. The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

Many a deposit estimation has been carried out since geostatistical methods were first implemented. To date however few mining programs have totally been completed and even fewer comparisons can be drawn between estimated reserves and extracted ore tonnages. Aluminium Pechiney work a number of bauxite mines in Southern France. As from 1969 they modified their deposit estimation methods, giving up traditional approaches and opting for geostatistics. At that time, the authors of this paper were entrusted with the first geostatistical estimations and in particular, those concerning the deposits mentioned herein. Over the past decade a number of deposits have been worked out and we thought it interesting to report about comparative results. French bauxite deposits are of the karstic, as opposed to the lateritic, type. The bauxite, formed at some distance of the present-day deposit, was brought to and trapped in limestone karst pits. Subsequent physical and chemical alterations may have taken place : silica and carbonate drifts, recent karst slips. The morphology of these deposits is often rather complicated. The deposits are small from a few hundred thousand to a few million tons at the most. The overburden thickness usually precludes open mining. Mining investments and financial risks are often high, making it necessary to obtain optimal information on the deposit considered for mining. For the three cases brought up in this paper, deposit sizes, exploration methods and conclusions differ. They are brought up mainly to show the advantages inherent to a quality geostatistical study and the lessons drawn by Aluminium Pechiney.

Since gold was first discovered in Colorado in the late 1850s' mining has been a major part of the state's economic history, according to Stanley Dempsey, chairman and chief executive officer of Denver- based Royal Gold Inc. While the mining industry has seen some lean times throughout the past century, it has always bounced back. Today, dozens of major gold companies are headquartered in the Denver area. The state's coal mines produced record amounts during 1996. And even some of Colorado's uranium mines are resuming production. Dempsey joined other speakers in addressing the state of Colorado's mining industry during the Colorado Mining Association's (CMA) National Western Mining Conference. Some 800 people attended the CMA meeting, held Feb. 2-5 in Denver. The meeting was the association's 100th since it was incorporated in 1897.

A comprehensive flotation study has been conducted on a Chinese fluorspar ore using the packed flotation column developed at Michigan Technological University (MTU). The results are compared with those for a conventional mechanical flotation method on the same feedstocks. Key factors controlling flotation performance of both methods are evaluated based upon a simple statistic design. The flotation concentrate produced in one stage of the packed column has 4% to 5% higher recovery and much lower silica impurity than the concentrate produced by up to six stages using a conventional mechanical cell. The results also show that the packed-column flotation process is particularly suitable for the recovery of finer fluorspar particles.

Water Only cyclones were introduced into commercial operation for cleaning of metallurgical and steam coal around 1950. Since its original introduction as a primary cleaning device, the employment of Water Only cyclones as recleaning and scalping devices has also grown in popularity. Examined are examples and uses of the water only cyclone as primary, re- cleaning, and scalping devices for fine coal cleaning. Also evaluated are conditions that should exist to ensure favorable cleaning in Water Only cyclones.

Previous models describing the aggregation of polymer-coated particles fail to take into account the fact that there are a limited number of sites onto which a polymer segment can adsorb, called "active" sites. Thus, the collision efficiency is a factor not only of the fractional surface coverage, but also of the number of active sites. In this study, a physical model of the flocculation system was devised in which the number of these sites could be varied, in order to study the effect on particle aggregation.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on the flotation hydrodynamics of fine particle flotation to improve the flotation efficiency in our domestic minerals industry. The turbulent fluid velocity profile was measured in various flotation cells at different levels of dissipation energy. The importance of dissipation energy and bubble size within the flotation cells for the flotation response of a chalcopyrite ore was evaluated. Both increased turbulent fluid flow and fine size bubbles improved the flotation rate of fine size chalcopyrite particles.

Georgia?s Coastal Plain contains important sediment-hosted deposits of kaolin, bauxite, heavy minerals, sand and gravel, silica sand, carbonate rocks, and fuller's earth. Genesis, location, size, and quality of these deposits are related to terrestrial, marginal-marine, and shallow-marine depositional environments that evolved during development of the southeastern North American continental margin. From the Cretaceous to Eocene, kaolin and aluminous sediments, which contained mica and feldspar, were deposited in marshes, ponds, and bays located in deltas or behind barrier islands or spits. In the Cretaceous sediments, subsequent, intensive, in situ chemical weathering converted mica and feldspar to kaolin. Kaolin eroded from deeply weathered granitic rocks in the Georgia Piedmont was deposited in Paleocene to Eocene sediments. Subaerial exposure during the Paleocene and Eocene desilicated kaolin sediments to form bauxite. Sand and gravel, silica sand, and heavy-mineral deposits are found in Cretaceous to Eocene fluvial and shoreline sediments, some of which are associated with the kaolin and bauxite deposits. Source areas, intensive chemical weathering in the source areas, transportation by the major river systems, and deposition of these clastic sediments in similar or nearby depositional environments are common elements in the genesis of these resources. Eocene fuller's-earth deposits are opaline claystones in near-shore to shelf-marine sediments, which overlie the kaolin-bearing strata. These claystones consist of montmorillonite and opal/ cristobalite derived from alteration of diatom frustules. Favorable ocean currents provided nutrients for extensive planktonic growth. Oligocene and Miocene carbonate rocks were deposited principally in shallow-marine embayments. Miocene fuller's- earth deposits in south-central Georgia and adjacent parts of Florida contain palygorskite that formed through alteration of montmorillonite/bentonite clays. Deposition and subsequent alteration occurred in shallow, brackish-water lagoons under relatively high temperature and subtropical conditions. Middle and late Miocene phosphorites were deposited on a shallow carbonate-shelf platform and were concentrated proximal to anticlinal highs. Numerous marine transgressions and regressions since the beginning of the Pleistocene resulted in shoreline detrital deposits containing aggregate sand, silica sand, and heavy minerals on the Coastal Plain and on the Continental Shelf. Major river systems transported sand and heavy minerals from source areas in the Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain. Deltaic deposits of heavy minerals were redistributed and concentrated by longshore currents, shoreline processes, and aeolian processes. River-terrace sediments, correlative with the Pleistocene shoreline deposits, contain sand-and-gravel and silica-sand deposits. Aeolian dune sands are associated with both Pleistocene fluvial and shoreline detrital deposits.

Iron carbide, containing 93.3% Fe and 6.7% C, is a tailor made feed for the electric arc furnace (EAF) and has recently gained worldwide attention as a possible replacement for premium quality scrap. With 38% of the steel in the United States being produced in EAFs, iron ore producers have an interest in becoming direct suppliers to the EAF industry. This paper explains the advantages of using iron carbide in an EAF and describes test work on the product and development work being per formed on engineering designs for a commercial plant.

Production of building materials such as are stones, sand, gravel etc., is characterized by a relatively low economic value and requires reasonable transport costs. That is why we are often faced, in our practical work, with the fact that within the framework of a relatively small area several open pits of building materials are, developed side by side while neither ecological, urban and spatial nor location factors have been taken into consideration. Numerous locations together with heterogeneous factors. point undoubtedly to the problem of planning the open pits locations for building mateials as a very serious and complex one. Even when certain localities are in question, it is rather a difficult task to present a real state and encompass all the, important location factors by mathematical model ling. This paper presents one of such models for solving the problem of selecting a location for building materials open pit.

A filter consisting of a synthetic fibrous material has been determined to be a viable alternative to the wire mesh panels currently used in irrigated filter dust collection systems. An extensive laboratory investigation of the material showed that it removed a higher percentage of both respirable coal and quartz dust from the air entering a collector than did the flat and pleated wire mesh panel designs. This improvement in dust collection efficiency reduced the amount of coal and quartz dust discharged from the collector exhaust by approximately 44%. Since continued exposure to excessive levels (>5%) of respirable quartz dust presents a severe health hazard, this alternative filter medium could be of use to those mines required to comply with more stringent dust standards due to quartz.
