Rates of return realized on investments in the gold mines of the newer goldfields outside the Witwatersrand were calculated and analysed over various time intervals and on various bases. It is shown that these rates of return are strongly correlated with changes in the gold price and cannot be equated with the returns that are expected when investments are made, and that the changes in gold price also affect the rates of return on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as a whole. These correlations are used, together with a limited application of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, to suggest the expected levels of threshold returns in real terms for new mining projects, for projects on existing mines, and for share valuations.

The measures taken by Rand Carbide Limited from the 1950s to 1976 to control dust emission from the electric furnaces at its Witbank factory are described. A new design of furnace for calcium carbide followed by a dry-fabric filtration plant for the furnace gases was not successful in arresting the dust. A 131 m chimney commissioned in 1968 effectively dispersed the dust-laden gases from both carbide and ferrosilicon production and so brought considerable alleviation. In 1974 a bag-filter dust-collecting plant was successfully commissioned on a 6 MV.A carbide furnace, and this was followed in 1976 by a bag-filter plant on a 46,5 MV.A ferrosilicon furnace. The company has spent considerable effort and money over two decades in trying to combat dust emission, but eventual success had to await technological development.

The Grootegeluk coal-beneficiation plant was erected in the Waterberg coalfield, near Ellisras in the Transvaal, to supply Iscor's steelworks with a predetermined tonnage of coking coal in accordance with strict quality requirements. This plant has to handle a high tonnage of raw coal, which is not easy to beneficiate, in order to produce 1,82 X IQ6t of coal. Extensive tests were conducted on borehole cores and a mass sample of coal obtained from the area. These tests were carried out on a laboratory and pilot-plant scale, and were aimed at the establishment of the most effective beneficiation methods and the choice of suitable equipment. This led to the completion of a full set of design and manufacturing drawings that resulted in the project approach . described in this paper.

Optimizing the public gains from the exploitation of mineral resources By Dr A. AZIS and Dr J. ZWARTENDYK Every nation must decide how it should exploit its mineral resources so as to contribute most to its national objectives. It is argued that the present value of the future corporate income tax flow derived.from mineral exploitation may serve as a useful indicator in moving toward a taxation policy that would contribute optimally toward the greatest public benefit. The future stream of corporate income taxes depends largely on the mineral endowment, consisting of deposits now being mined, known unmined deposits, and unknown deposits. Unknown deposits may be estimated by geological inference. Both known and unknown deposits can be categorized according to grade and size, and divided into economic and uneconomic deposits on the basis of certain prices, costs, rate of return and taxation levels. Computer simulations can be run of discounted cash flow models at various taxation levels to showthe impact of taxation changes on future tax revenues.

This paper describes a study of the destination of the mercury that is present in the ore during the recovery of gold. It was found that over 96 per cent of the mercury passed through the process untouched. A small amount finds its way into cyanide solution, and is concentrated with gold in Zinc dust as Merrill precipitate. When the precipitate is calcined, the mercury is driven off and finds its way into the atmosphere. However, dilution of the stack gas in the atmosphere appears to be sufficient to prevent hazardous concentrations arising at ground level. No other significant concentrations of mercury were found at any stage of the process. The amount of mercury lost to the atmosphere by this mechanism appears to be less than 200 kg per year throughout the gold-mining industry in South Africa. Virtually no mercury vapour could be detected in the air in the smelt-house. Slight increases in mercury concentrations above background level were observed in soils around the reduction plants and in the discharge or return waters, but no environmental stress is anticipated from these increases.

An elevated location of a paste thickener on a ridge close to the disposal area is considered at a Swedish iron ore mine. About 0.7 M tonnes of thickened tailings are planned to be layered as paste in the vicinity of the thickener over several years with pipeline lengths of up to 900 m after about 20 years. In order to clarify the pipeline pumping characteristics of the tailings product for volumetric solids concentration from 40 to 50%, experiments in loop systems with pipeline inner diameters from 0.063 to 0.152 m have been carried out with various types of pumps. The results and comparisons carried out here showed that the performance of centrifugal pumps cannot simply be related to the rheology, but factors related to pump design and build-up tendencies of material within the pump and other particle properties may be of equal importance. During the first years of operation only one thickener underflow pump is required. The reliability and performance for various pump configurations are planned to be investigated systematically in order to meet the most effective long-term solution for paste thickener operation, pipeline distribution and placement in the disposal area as the discharge point advances over the life of the project.

Scrap printed circuit boards were selectively smelted at 1 200°C to produce a metallic alloy having three phases. These phases were identified as a lead-rich phase, a low tin content alpha bronze phase, and a high tin delta phase. Electrochemical leaching studies on this alloy were done in 1 mol/dm3 sulfuric acid or in 2 mol/dm3 hydrochloric acid (adjusted to an ionic strength of 3 mol/dm3). The lead rich phase was more strongly passivated in sulfate media, and in this medium the high tin content delta bronze was more resistant to corrosion than the lower tin alpha bronze phase. In chloride medium the lead phase and both bronze phases corroded readily, but with current densities about an order of magnitude lower than in sulfate medium (static conditions) for the bronze phases. The high tin delta bronze phase was found to form a passivating layer in sulfate media. A similar layer was not seen in chloride medium. The leaching studies in sulfate medium also showed the existence of an alpha bronze phase of lower tin content in the centres of the alpha phase grains. This phase was quite resistant to leaching in sulfate medium.

Sustained growth in demand for platinum group metals has resulted in an unfettered increase in new projects undertaken by the platinum producers. These projects are outsourced to various degrees. The argument of this paper is that both the client?s project manager and the consultant?s project manager are essential elements in the successful execution of a project. Their roles are not only different but also complementary, and are defined in the paper. Data gained from considerable experience in the South African corporate mining environment underpins the opinions expressed in the paper. Furthermore, an extensive literary search was undertaken to determine trends in related industries outside the South African context. Throughout the argument it is emphasized that project philosophy emanates from a systems view and must be treated as an overarching whole. The elements of project management become meaningless unless they are connected to one another and integrated into a cohesive unit. Advancing the knowledge field of project management is of critical importance to mining investors. There is no doubt that a key determinant of the sustainability of mining business is closely related to the efficiency of all-inclusive project management. From pre-investment and feasibility studies, implementation and execution, to ramping-up to full production, scientific project management has a critical role to play. Guidelines for the pursuance of this ideal are proposed. The introduction contextualizes the subject matter in an overview of the evolution of mine management in South Africa and abroad. Then, brief insight is given into the philosophy of project management. This exposition is confined to the predispositions, presuppositions and defining characteristics of project management. The core of the paper looks at the roles of the client?s project manager in relation to the consultant?s project manager. This section is underpinned by practical experience gained by the author on numerous mining projects. A view is taken of the future of project management in the mining industry. The conclusion summarizes the argument and aligns project management trends in the mining industry.

Goode (President): South Africa is known for its sunshine and mineral deposits-especially its gold and its diamonds-and as this year marks the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, it is appropriate that I say a few words about mining and metallurgy and the part this industry and our Institute has played in the life of this country. Africa, as the Dark Continent, with its fascinating tales of Prester John, Ophir, Queen of Sheba and its myths and legends has throughout the ages fired the public imagination. Pharaoh Necho, 600 years before the birth of Christ, sent an expedition from Egypt around the Cape to probe this strange land. The gold for King Solomon's throne was said to come from Monomotapa-the country now known as Rhodesia. Centuries later the Arabs and Portuguese searched for this mineral wealth. The Arabs found little gold but unfortunately established a lucrative trade in black slaves. Now let us take a brief look into the closing stages of the Stone Age when the indigenous population of the lower portion of this continent consisted of the Bushmen, a nomadic hunting people who knew no metals and kept no stock, and the Hottentots who were a pastoral folk with cattle and sheep. Then somewhere about the 11th century the Bantu started their long migration southwards and brought with them the knowledge of smelting of iron ore. One of their settlements was here in Johannesburg on the Melville Kopje at Emmarentia. These people were the first miners and metallurgists on the Witwatersrand and the beautifully preserved iron smelting furnace constructed nearly 1,000 years ago is a tribute to their technical ability. This ability to use iron to make better spears for hunting or to fashion hoes for cultivating the soil led to their establishment as a superior tribe. The earlier Bushmen were pushed back to the inhospitable swamps and deserts and the Hottentots fled to the south. The Bantu also knew the art of copper smelting. In the days of the Dutch East India Company, at the end of the seventeenth century, Bantu workers brought copper from the north-west Cape to Simon van der Stel, but it was another two hundred years before the white man turned this to advantage. Stories of the Bantu mining gold spurred the early European hunters to travel deeper into the heart of Africa in search of wealth, and we are told that Karel Kruger, in 1834 whilst leading an ivory hunting expedition, discovered gold on the Witwatersrand, and took samples to Cape Town; but when he returned with a larger expedition a few years later his party was attacked by Moselekatze's Matabele near Potchefstroom. Kruger was killed and only the legend survived. The real spur to mining in this country was the discovery of diamonds in Griqualand West in 1867. The field seemed fabulously rich and diggers flocked to the scene from the four corners of the earth. With them came Cecil Rhodes, Barnato, Beit and some of the finest mining and financial brains the country had yet seen. These giant entrepreneurs were not tempted by the small deposits of gold in the Barberton and Pilgrim's Rest areas when these were made a few years later but

A. Continuous miners, and their operation at Bosjesspruit Colliery J. D. INCH*, B.Sc. (Min.), M. I. Min. E. (Visitor) A brief description is given of the main types of continuous miner and their incidence of application in South Africa. Definitions and descriptions of the design parameters and components of the main cutting head are given. together with an outline of the modifications carried out to improve machine cutting performance. An account is given of experience with the application of water infusion to suppress airborne dust during continuous-miner operations. B. The selection and performance of continuous miners at Matla Coal by J. D. STONE, B.Sc. Eng. (Min.,) M.B.L. (Graduate) The reasons for the choice of continuous miners for the development of accesses and the winning of coal in a modern underground coal mine are discussed. It is shown that, at relatively low depths, the extraction rate as well as the costs are more favourable than those of proved total extraction methods. The selection of a continuous miner is largely dictated by factors such as production rate, capital and running costs, imported content and the extent to which local content and manufacturing are to be increased, manpower requirements, seam thickness, expected floor and roof conditions, and maximum cutting height. The present inherent shortcomings of continuous miners, such as inefficient continuous transportation of coal away from the miner and the lack of an infinitely variable traction to match the sumping speed with the feasible penetration speed, are pointed out. Specific problems encountered and the methods of solving them, as well as a planned trial with a heavy-duty continuous miner, are discussed. C. Continuous mining within the Tavistock Group of collieries I. D. BRUMBY.Dip. Min. (Visitor) The Tavistock Group of collieries is situated some 25 km south of Witbank. The three collieries comprising the Group are Tavistock Colliery, Phoenix Colliery, and South Witbank Coal Mines. Continuous mining is practised to some degree at all three collieries. This system of mining was introduced at Phoenix during 1976, South Witbank during 1978, and Tavistock during 1979. For the twelve months ended June 1979, continuous mining accounted for 1,7 Mt of the 4,5 Mt hauled from underground. All the continuous miners introduced to date have been of the rotary-drum type. D. Pillar extraction at Usutu Collieries using continuous miners by c. J. BEUKES(Visitor) In 1969 Usutu Collieries began pillar extraction with conventional mechanized equipment. This was very successful, but certain disadvantages could be eliminated if continuous miners were used instead. In 1976 the first continuous miner was introduced for this purpose; this proved so successful that a second unit was introduced in 1977, and pillar extraction by conventional equipment was discontinued. By the end of 1978, 1,3 Mt had been mined from pillar extraction by continuous miners. This paper describes the method in some detail, and indicates that the operational costs are lower than for conventional bord-and-pillar mining. The plants integrated in the PhosAgro group of companies perform processes from scientific research to the project, from ore mining to shipment of fertilisers and feed additives to consumers. An extensive process chain maintains smooth interaction at all stages from research to production. As an example, the paper shows the revamp of two beneficiation plants (ANOF-2 and ANOF-3), requiring a comprehensive approach to task solving. The intention of the revamp was to increase the total yield of apatite and nepheline concentrate, taking into account the gradual decline in the quality of ore being processed and ensuring the yield stability of final products during re-equipment of the plants. At ANOF-3, the crushing and grinding cycle was modernised, the production of nepheline concentrate was implemented, and the capacity of apatite flotation, dehydration, and drying was increased. At ANOF-2 a new process chain was implemented for the production of apatite concentrate in workshops previously used for the production of nepheline concentrate. The main building was withdrawn from operation, where ore grinding, apatite flotation and apatite concentrate thickening had been carried out. The total increase in apatite concentrate yield at two beneficiation plants was 1.3 times. A further increase in concentrate production is planned. Experience with Mars pumping of underground water by N. E. K. SCHUTTLER (Visitor) As the result of a planned increase in production, Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Company Limited increased the hoisting capacity of their existing equipment to its fullest extent and installed Mars pumps and a washing plant. The layout of the installation is described, and details are given of the modifications made to overcome its weaknesses. Plans to change the present four-stage system to a seven-stage system are outlined.

Occurrences of hazardous events (explosions of methane or coal dust, fires, outbursts) have been investigated and presented as a flow of events in time. It has been shown that flows of hazardous events in a long time span are homogeneous, stationary and no-after effect flows and can be considered as stationary Poisson flows. A flow of CH4/coal dust explosions that had happened for the last 27 years in Ukraine was analyzed. The explosions have been statistically processed. Practicability of agreement of statistical and theoretical data on mathematical expectation and mean square deviation of time interval between explosion and the explosion intensity has been stated. Probability of an emergency event in time is expressed through an exponential function, while mathematical expectation of an accident and mean square deviation of time interval between successive explosions are in inverse proportion to the accident intensity. Accident probability for practical purposes can be determined as a product of accident intensity by calculated time interval.

Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) Technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance in the lead and zinc industries, as an efficient and highly flexible pyrometallurgical reactor with accompanying excellent environmental performance. For the processing of lead and zinc bearing feed materials twenty one (21) Ausmelt furnaces are now in operation, under design or under construction. With recent increases in the value of both lead and zinc and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of resources, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources as well as metal containing residues has substantially increased. Ausmelt Technology has proven to be well suited to the economic recovery of values from such sources. This has for example culminated in Ausmelt?s commitment to the Whyalla Zinc project as the owner/operator of a facility for the treatment of zinc bearing secondary feeds. This paper describes Ausmelt?s recent developments in the fields of lead and zinc processing, as well as further investigations into new processing areas, including the direct smelting of zinc concentrates. Ausmelt?s TSL Technology can now be regarded as Best Available Technology (BAT) for metal production.

Australian mining companies are actively exploring for and developing mineral deposits throughout the world with interests in emerging markets such as Africa, Asia and South America. It is important to understand emerging market risk as this will affect the willingness of mining companies and financial institutions to invest in a country, especially with reference to their key asset, the mining licence or operating/concession agreement. Mining companies looking to develop new projects in emerging markets have different risk profiles than projects in countries such as Australia and Canada. Examples of key risks faced in emerging markets include: 1. political - expropriation, nationalisation, contract frustration, currency inconvertibility, war, terrorism, strikes, riots and civil commotion; and 2. legal - mining legislation, arbitration and dispute resolution, trade agreements. There is a problem in the difference in risk perceptions between mining companies, financial institutions and insurers. This can cause different stakeholders to carry out different evaluations of the risks faced by a project, resulting in confusion about the risk margin attached to any project. In a time where resource nationalisation and energy security are prompting governments to become more involved in the mining sector we run through some recent examples of mining companies that have had problems due to the key risks highlighted earlier. Importance of carrying out the right due diligence to replace perceptions with reality: ? early identification of risks - detailed due diligence on emerging market risks that may arise will help with their identification and mitigation, ? make use of companies that can help identify risks and suggest solutions, ? control the cost of financing - risk margin applied to a project ? finance loan will be influenced by the risks faced, and ? risk management and using political risk insurance. There are plenty of opportunities in emerging markets but it is important to recognise the associated risks. Detailed due diligence at an early stage will provide long-term benefits.

"The behaviour of employees is an essential issue in the field of occupational health and safety. Safe behaviour is to a large extent determined by, apart from motivation and preventive actions, an employee’s attitude towards hazard. Thus, attention should be given to defining employees’ attitudes, and following that, to the possibility of correcting and shaping these attitudes in relation to hazard and obeying occupational health and safety regulations. The authors have focused on the analysis of employee attitudes to health and safety regulations in Polish coal mining companies, taking into consideration earlier research on the behaviour of selected employees. The paper presents the methods used to identify Z-type (passive) behaviour. Next, this behaviour is analysed to identify differences between a Z-type employee (enslaved) and other employees. To conclude, the paper presents a list of possible motivational tools that may be used to encourage occupational health and safety in Z-type employees. IntroductionThe technical state of equipment and conditions in the workplace greatly influence occupational safety. However, the deciding factor influencing the rate of accidents in the workplace is the frequency with which employees practise risky behaviour. Factors such as the social conditioning of conduct and motivation for organizing safe work conditions have been included in the notion of creating a positive culture of work safety. This notion has been approved as one of the main goals in management (Studenski, 1996).Safe behaviour is to a large extent, apart from motivation and preventive actions, determined by an employee’s attitude towards hazard. All actions undertaken in the field of occupational health and safety, including training, motivational systems, or imitation of behaviour resulting from a high culture of occupational safety in a given work environment, will not bring about the desire effects if workers have an inappropriate attitude towards occupational health and safety regulations."

In many practical situations, calculation of the point semivariogram is not necessary. Such a case is analysed in this chapter. The purpose of this analysis is to give a better understanding of the meaning of the mathematical formulae developed in the previous chapters. A similar problem will be studied in Chapter 11, using the point semivariogram.

SYNOPSIS A description is given of a new computer programme that has been developed for the rapid computation of the changes in temperature and humidity of air passing through mine airways. The programme enables the ventilation engineer to calculate air temperature increases along airways with an ease that is comparable with that of looking up a set of graphs or tables in an engineering hand-book. The pertinent information for a particular airway can be fed to the computer either on a standard punched card, or by typing directly into the computer at a remote terminal teletype unit.
