In this article, a case is made for the importance of the transfer and management of tacit knowledge to ensure continued sustainable competitive advantage within the pyrometallurgical industry in South Africa. The state of knowledge management (KM) is assessed through a theoretical and empirical study. The empirical part of the study was conducted by means of a survey questionnaire. An important prerequisite within the research entailed determining the current state of KM within the pyrometallurgical industry, and the findings are presented throughout this article. The research argues for initiatives to address the high turnover of pyrometallurgical knowledge workers. This industry needs to entrench tacit knowledge and therefore address the problems associated with the continuous loss of inherent specialized knowledge. Appropriately, emphasis is placed on identifying initiatives required to embed and retain not only human capital lost through mobility, but rather retaining tacit knowledge through a practical KM framework.

INTRODUCTION To prepare the reader adequately, reference should be made to the paper 'The Pioneering of Fully Mechanized Longwall Coal Mining in South Africa' by R. T. Naude and M. J. Deats, published in the February, 1967, edition of the Journal. At the time mechanized longwalling had been proved operationally feasible with encouraging results since its inception in South Africa in mid 1965. Subsequently, further top seam panels were successfully extracted with improved productivity and with some modification to equipment. In 1968, after an overseas visit by mine officials, equipment specific to suit local conditions was acquired and lower seam trials commenced. Despite initial obstacles and difficulties the first panel was successfully mined. Modification and improvements to equipment and techniques resulted in the second lower seam panel being extracted economically during 1969-1970 and with productivity exceeding even that of top seam faces. During extraction of the second lower seam panel, gradual and complete surface subsidence occurred over the panel without affecting face operations. Rock mechanics investigations had originally indicated some uncertainty regarding adverse dolerite sill behaviour which could have caused longwall mining to be hazardous. All such doubts have now been removed. RESUMÉ AS AT FEBRUARY, 1967 Mechanized longwalling was introduced in 1965 on an experimental basis in an effort to improve productivity in the newer area of the mine and to increase the quality of the comparatively dirty run of mine feed to the washing plant. In addition advantages could be predicted in the long term by better utilizing reserves of straight coking coal and increasing the life of the mine. The top seam unit was obtained on a rental basis and by the beginning of 1967, two panels, the first having a face length of 215 m, a panel length of 345 m, seam section of 1 219 mm, and the second the same face length, a panel length of 453 m and a seam section of 1 067 mm had been successfully longwalled. At this stage a best month of 24 602 metric tons with an average of 17 364 metric tons per full working month could be reported. Results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment as its own asset and from 1967 onward, the unit has operated on this basis. From the point of view of rock mechanics, the dolerite sill over the first two panels was known to have 'bridged', only the material below the base of the sill having truly 'goafed'. No adverse pressure effects had significantly affected face operations except for two 'bumps' towards the end of operations in each panel. Gate road maintenance presented no problem. The strong inflows of water experienced on the first face were now known to be associated with an isolated water bearing fault plane and were not experienced on the second face. TOP SEAM EXPERIENCE - MAY, 1966, TO DATE Panel 2 (February, 1966, to November, 1966) The operations in panel 2 (see Fig. 1 for location of panels) continued uneventfully until the final month in this panel. At this stage, the chocks behaved most inconsistently often lowering under the weight of the canopies alone. Roof trouble became so severe that the unit was unable to produce adequately and blasting of chocks became a daily occurrence. Finally 24 m short of the planned limit it was decided that a complete overhaul was the only solution and the extraction operations commenced. At this time, the only fatal accident associated with longwalling occurred when a Non-White inadvertently fell into the panzer conveyor transfer point at the main gate. Some gate road difficulties in this panel were overcome by bolting tapes to the roof as decking and allowing them to pass over the gate chocks and collapse into the goaf. Two cribbed roof falls were also negotiated by the gate chocks at the face ends without undue difficulties. It was decided in the light of maintenance problems encountered on this face that the best solution would be to appoint a foreman solely in charge of face maintenance crews. This step has to a large extent contributed to success achieved subsequently. Panel 2-face length 213 m panel length 456 m cutting height 1 092 mm average monthly output 16 443 t best month 19 130 t Panel 3 (December, 1966, to June, 1967) By the end of 1966 results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment. This was negotiated and the unit has operated as such to the present date. Prior to installation in panel 3, all face equipment was thoroughly overhauled underground and the chocks boost-tested to yield-load. The costs of overhauling, including almost complete hose replacement, were much higher than anticipated. Advice had been received that complete hose replacement was common practice after +/- 18 months' operation. Shortly after commencement of operations in panel 3 the chocks again failed as they had towards the end of panel 2. At this stage, the suppliers advised that the valve gear should have been repaired during the overhaul as the needle and seat seals could no longer be relied upon. This operation was impossible to carry out on the face and would have been e1ttremely time consuming. Fortunately a new type of valve gear was then available from the suppliers, termed the capsule-type valve, and a complete change over could be made on the face. Brigadier Ralph Shelton Griffin Stokes D.S.O., C.B.E., M.C., who died in England on 24th February, 1979, at the age of 96 years, was one of the most colourful personalities in South African mining history. After the South African War, in which he served as a trooper, he joined the Crown Reef Mine as an assistant assayer (1902), and was to serve the mines of the Corner House Group intermittently for the next 57 years until his retirement in 1959.

The paper reviews the effects of fast-neutron irradiation on the tensile properties of austenitic stainless steels at irradiation temperatures of less than 400°C, using, as an example, work carried out at Pelindaba on an AISI 316 type steel produced in South Africa. Damage produced in these steels at higher irradiation temperatures and fluences is also briefly discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of some methods of overcoming or decreasing the effects of irradiation damage.

Some years ago, the authors developed an analysis of non-Newtonian pipe flow based on enhanced turbulent microscale and associated sub-layer thickening. This analysis, which can be used for various rheologic modelling equations, has in the past been applied to smooth-walled pipes. The present paper extends the analysis to rough walls, using the popular Bingham plastic equation as a representative rheological behaviour in order to prepare friction-factor plots for comparison with measured results. The conditions for laminar-turbulent transition for both smooth and rough walls are also considered, and comparisons are made with earlier correlations and with experimental data.

The paper describes how stress analyses were used to show the defect of a tunnel's shape on the overstressing potential of its periphery. The best profile was found to be that of a horizontal ellipse, for which there was little significant scaling, permitting temporary support to be incorporated into a permanent tunnel support system. This investigation was followed by the modeling of several support systems for tunnels with a horizontal-ellipse profile, which showed that such a profile can reduce the installed support required for a tunnel of different cross section by an average of 57 per cent.

This paper presents data collected from full-scale plants in order to verify the predictions of a new simulator of CIP or CL operations. Good agreement was found between the experimental data and the simulator predictions. The simulator is able to predict the effects of many of the complex operating phenomena in GIP and CL plants that previous simulation techniques could not describe. This is illustrated by predictions of how factors, such as the manner of carbon transfer, concurrent leaching, and gold loading on eluted carbon, can affect the performance of an adsorption plant.

The investigation, which was conducted at Iscor's Newcastle works (in Natal), was aimed at the development of reliable, consistent, and cost-effective methods of sampling. In the sampling of hot metal, it was found that lollipop and spoon samples had identical sulphur analyses, and negligibly different silicon analyses. Thus, spoon sampling of the hot metal was implemented, with a resultant saving of over RIOO 000 per annum on lollipop samplers. In the sampling of steel, aluminium -killed samples were found to have lower phosphorus analyses than titanium killed samples. Spoon sampling was rejected in this application since the use of titanium wire would be too costly. It was decided that titanium would be used as the deoxidant in lollipop samples of steel, and that the Leco carbon! sulphur analyser would be used as the sole arbiter of sulphur content.

SYNOPSIS This paper outlines the principles involved in the regeneration of activated carbon for renewed use in the recovery of precious metals or the purification of water. While chemical methods are effective in restoring the activity of spent activated carbon containing only single or defined adsorbates, thermal methods have to be used when the spent carbon is loaded with a heterogeneous mixture of adsorbates such as those normally present in industrial process streams or effluents. The steps involved in thermal regeneration are described, together with the operating conditions that can be controlled to give the required degree of activation. Finally, an account is given of the structural changes that occur in a new or spent activated carbon during thermal treatment.

With a view to enabling managers to use research more effectively, an outline is given of the features of research as applied to mining. Types of research are distinguished, and stages in the research-and-development process are identified. The time-scales and resource requirements of the various types and phases of research are explained. Examples of research that have reached implementation in gold mining are given to illustrate the features mentioned. Ph.D. (Toronto) (Visitor) A study was made of the kinetics in the leaching of nickel from pentlandite in dilute-acidic ferric sulphate solutions as a basis for subsequent studies on bacterial leaching. The chemical leaching rate was found to be highly dependent on the temperature and the concentration of ferric ions. The proposed mechanism for the leaching process is one involving rate control by chemical processes and mass transport. Good agreement was found between the experimental data and the proposed mechanism.

The gold deposits of the farms Lisbon and Berlyn in the Eastern Transvaal by V. C. H. R. BRERETON* (Visitor) This paper describes the discovery and recovery of gold, over a period dating back to the 1870s. on the farms Lisbon and Berlyn, situated approxim ately 1I km north-east of Pilgrims Rest. where mining ceased in July 1971. 99 years after gold was first discovered in the Pilgrims Rest and Sabie districts. Included in the paper are accounts of the discovery and mining operations of the Lisbon-Berlyn Company from 1884 to 1890. The operations of small companies and syndicates. the superficial winning of gold by diggers, and the encouraging reports of four mining engineers in 1890 are also mentioned.

Without minerals, man cannot possibly hope to maintain his present standard of living. Professional mining men throughout the world, particularly in mineral-exporting countries like South Africa, are faced with the increasingly difficult task of ensuring adequate supplies of minerals. The problems of gradually diminishing mineral reserves and rapidly rising mining costs can to a certain extent be overcome by the use of more-sophisticated technological techniques and by the improvement of efficiency wherever possible. However, there is growing concern in some quarters, that, despite the ingenuity of engineers, geologists, metallurgists, and scientists, the earth's mineral reserves will eventually become insufficient to meet man's needs. In order to ensure the continued well-being of the earth's population, it is therefore imperative that more attention should be paid to mineral research and the training of specialists in the field of mineral reclamation.
