The determination of the optimum cutoff grade for a surface mine may be very different from that of an underground mine because a selectable mining method may be used in the latter case. A review of research into the theory of cutoff grade is made and then a new method, based on Optimal Control Theory, is presented. This method uses a Hamiltonian function to assist in obtaining the solution. It is shown that the life of a mine can be divided into three parts: a beginning period bf planning before mining; an intermediate period when both an average price and market information are used continually to adjust the cutoff grade; and, a final period when the main consideration is the current market situation.

A simplified two-dimensional plane strain numerical technique for the non- linear modelling of a tabular mining excavation in brittle host rock under high stress conditions is described. The model has been developed using relatively straightforward assumptions based on extensive underground investigation of the fracturing and deformation of rock at the stope face in deep gold mines on the Witwatersrand, together with observed rock behaviour under laboratory conditions. The reef rock is modelled as a linear string of yielding elements which interact horizontally, while the elastic rockmass remote from the reef is modelled using boundary element techniques. This elementary technique is shown to produce results which agree closely with the observed behaviour of the fractured rock during the mining of a remnant pillar

Mining is important to the economies of both Tanzania and Namibia. Recently, both nations revised their national mineral policies to ensure future economic benefit. The main difference in the mineral policy-formulation processes followed by the two countries is identified as the degree and timing of stakeholder involvement during the articulation process. In the case of Namibia, the stakeholders were involved from the start in identifying issues and in suggesting policy solutions. In contrast, the Tanzanian process involved stakeholders after a framework had been developed by a task team. The Tanzanian emphasis was on attracting foreign investment into a traditionally state enterprise system of mineral investment and development. One can argue that the policies developed met the initial requirements, and both are, therefore successful, despite the different processes of policy formulation that were used. However, several fundamental questions arise as a result of the two approaches. This paper attempts to answer these questions by providing a comparison of the processes used for developing and formulating the mineral policies of Tanzania and Namibia. It concludes that the Namibian consultative process is perhaps more sustainable in the long-term because of its wider public support. Time will tell which of these policy-formulation processes provides a basis for sustainable economic growth for developing mineral economies.

Day-to-day operations on the Broken Hill mine of the Black Mountain Mineral Development (BMMD) Company require a detailed knowledge of the distribution of the ore minerals within the orebody. The data are acquired by systematic underground diamond drilling of the orebody and subsequent geological and analytical borehole logging. These data are then captured onto a database, available for further analysis. Before mining commences in a mining block, copper, lead, zinc, silver and bismuth assay values, and the specific gravity of each sample, are extracted from the database. 3-dimensional variogram and kriging calculations are performed for each geological zone; for all the metals of interest. A computer representation of the mining block in the form of an ore model is then built using these kriged data. From these ore models information is extracted as required by the Geology Department on the mine, and used in numerous operations. These include: daily grade control to supply optimum feed grades to the treatment plant; the compilation of short, medium and long term production schedules; orebody outline definitions for the detailed planning of mining operations; ore resource calculations. The system has been modified and updated since its inception and provides timely information in a production environment.

"As geological and mining conditions become more complex, and as overall mining economics become more marginal, short- and long-range decision-making regarding multiple-seam surface mining becomes more difficult. The decision-making problem involves a study of economics, cut-off grades and ratios, equipment capabilities, sequencing and selective mining practices.This paper is concerned primarily with multiple-seam mining of bituminous coal. The research has led to the development of an economic decision-making model for use as a day-to-day tool to aid mine operators and pit geologists to decide what and how to mine.The model is designed as an aid for feasibility decision-making in multiple-scam situations and for situations where selective mining is needed or desired. In effect, a simulation of the feasibility and preliminary mine planning phases has been developed. The model is divided into four separate segments: decision-making, simulated mining, cost calculations and the determination of the discounted cash flow return on investment."

"The objective of any mining company is to sustainably maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). The expected NPV over the LOM is calculated based on a mine plan, yet the actual value realized by the mining company depends greatly on the level of intertemporal execution against the mine plan. Consequently, a major key performance indicator (KPI) that is often overlooked in open pit mining, due to a greater focus on temporal KPIs, is the degree of spatial compliance to the mine plan. Such focus sometimes leads to short-term actions being detrimental to long-term plans. In this paper we describe the development and implementation of a spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach for an open pit mine. Application to a case study open pit iron ore mine in South Africa indicated a significant improvement in the spatial mine-to-plan compliance, from 69% to 94% over a three-year period from 2014 to 2016. These results indicate that implementation of the proposed spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution and assists in improving the alignment between short-term, medium-term, and LOM plans.IntroductionThe objective of any mining company is to maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life of mine (LOM). "Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in South Africa received official recognition after the change in government in 1994.The Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) recognized the sector as a vehicle for social and economic development for historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs) who had previously been excluded from participating in the mainstream economy. Having recognized the ASM sector, government introduced several interventions and support structures to foster the development of ASM, to encourage participation of HDSAs, and to address challenges facing the sector. The objective of this paper is to assess the progress made, with particular regard to challenges in the sector. The paper focuses on the policy requirements that were deemed important for the growth of the ASM sector by the White Paper on Minerals and Mining Policy (1998). These can be collated into five categories: access to mineral rights, access to finance, access to markets, technology and skills, and institutional support. The paper provides a review of the support interventions, their intended roles and impact on the sector, and identifies existing gaps and possible ways of dealing with the challenges. There is a need for research to assess the real impact of these past and existing interventions on the ASM sector to draw lessons for future development.IntroductionThe significant rise in artisanal and smallscale mining (ASM) activities worldwide has led to many countries recognizing the sector. ASM takes place in approximately 80 countries (World Bank, 2013). It is estimated that the sector employs between 20 and 30 million people around the world (Buxton, 2013). This compares to between 3 and 3.7 million in 1999 (International Labour Organization, 1999). ASM activities are widespread, occurring mostly in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Central and South America (World Bank, 2013). There has been a significant increase in the number of people participating both directly and indirectly in the sector and this is expected to continue given the socio-economic realities of most developing countries. High levels of poverty and unemployment and growing inequality continue to be largest problems facing the majority of developing countries today. The ASM sector plays an important role as a source of livelihoods, particularly for those residing in rural areas with limited economic opportunities. In the majority of countries, the recognition of the ASM sector was driven by its increasing contribution to socio-economic development through job creation, poverty alleviation, and rural development. In response, a number of intervention strategies were introduced in support of the sector to address its negative impacts and to increase its potential benefits."

The Bond standard grindability test provides a Work Index that is widely used to estimate the energy required for grinding, but the test cannot be applied to fine materials such as plant tailings and middlings. For such materials, a comparative grinding test must be used in which a reference material from an operating plant is ground in a laboratory mill to determine the 'equivalent' energy consumption per revolution of the laboratory mill. As the Bond grindability test mill and its operating conditions are specified, its equivalent energy consumption per revolution should be a constant, here designated as B. Once B has been determined, the mill can be used to estimate the grindability of fine materials without the need for reference materials. A value of B can be calculated from any Bond grindability test, and 245 tests that were conducted at Mintek were examined to determine its value. A wide range of values was found, but most of them were grouped around 198 x 10- 7 kWh/rev, which is taken as the best estimate of B that is available at present. Values of B that are not close to this figure are obtained from materials for which the Bond grindability test gives misleading or 'spurious' Work Indexes. These spurious Work Indexes lead to the apparent departure of B from its true value. Some limitations of the Bond grindability test arise from its use of a mill without litters and of screening, instead of classification, to close the circuit.

"Successful development of projects or life-of-mine strategies requires an understanding of the relative sensitivity of value drivers such as grade, tonnage, energy costs, direct operational costs, and recoveries. For example, the results could vary significantly depending on the grade strategy, given a specific orebody amenable to open pitting.Pit optimization is a very powerful tool widely used in the industry to determine the pit shell with the most attractive value potential. Based on the input parameters utilized, the pit optimization process determines the stripping ratio, mineable reserves, and pit shape, and effectively calculates a cut-off grade, assumed to be the optimal cut-off grade.Once the initial pit optimization process is completed, the need may arise to align the optimization results with the company strategy by further optimizing other criteria, such as maximizing short-term cash flow. This paper describes and discusses the selection of an alternative cutoff grade as a strategic intervention. It involves changing the cut-off grade, effectively increasing the head grade to gain a strategic advantage aligned with the company strategy, with a clear understanding of the financial value impact. With this knowledge, it is clear that pitoptimization establishes the basis for future analysis and refinement.IntroductionIt is common for companies to select the optimal pit shell defining the mineral reserve without much further consideration. However, companies may consider various strategies to optimize the long-term value of the project or to optimize the short-term cash flow. Analysis of the entire life-of-mine value estimation process shows that the selection of a cut-off grade and other parameters should be based on careful analysis. Determining the optimal cut-off grade of ore at a different period during the life of mine to maximize the value is often one of the most difficult challenges for a company.A cut-off grade is the lowest grade that mining activities will target. As a result the average mining grade, which drives the value of a project, will always be higher than the cutoff grade applied.According to Bascetin and Nieto (2007) cut-off optimization is still not widely practised. Cut-off grade optimization is an effort to maximize the value of a project by understanding the capacity constraints in the mine, mill, and the market. At any point during the life of mine, any or all of the limitations on tonnage mined, tonnage milled, and product sold may be constraining the system. To ensure cut-off optimization is done correctly, the capacity constraints must be independent of the cut-off grade."

In this paper ventilation planning methods are discussed, with particular reference to the application of computer techniques to the solving of the many problems associated with the forecasting of ventilation and refrigeration requirements in mines of high production rates going to depths and rock temperatures higher than previously experienced. The use of the Starfield-Dickson programmes for calculating heat flow into airways and advancing stopes is demonstrated in the case of ventilation planning on a large mine extending to a brief depth of over 3 km below the surface. The possible effects of new mining methods on ventilation requirements in the future is briefly discussed.

The aim of this work was to compare the corrosion behaviour of thermal spray WC ? based coatings before and after annealing. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the phases present in the coatings at various stages. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was measured using electrochemical and immersion corrosion tests. The results obtained from electrochemical corrosion (quantified by corrosion current density) and immersion corrosion tests showed that annealing appears to decrease the corrosion resistance of the coatings. From the XRD results it was determined that the phases that corroded preferentially were cobalt (Co), eta (Co6W6C) and W2C. Keywords: Corrosion, thermal spray, coatings, hardmetals.

An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction - primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

Regular analysis of different streams is important for the control of hydrometallurgical processes. Various physical and physical-chemical methods are applied for this purpose. Many modern methods require costly equipment and are subject to interferences. Therefore, redoxtitration methods remain of interest. The use of different types of oxidizing and reducing agents as well as redox indicators enables many cations and anions to be rapidly and accurately analysed. Sometimes redox titrations require the prior preparation and addition of masking agents. Selective, sensitive and low-cost methods of redoxtitration of copper and SO2 in plant conditions are described.

Several rate models for the adsorption of gold cyanide from aqueous solution onto activated carbon are given in the literature. The purpose of this study is to critically examine their ability to simulate the adsorption process over a wide range of conditions. An account is given of a comprehensive set of experimental work on the kinetics of gold adsorption onto a coconut shell- based activated carbon. Equilibrium isotherms were also determined. It is concluded that the homogeneous surface-diffusion model fits the experimental data reasonably well and provides a good balance between simplicity and descriptive accuracy. The model contains two parameters: the extra-particle mass-transfer coefficient and an effective intraparticle surface-diffusion coefficient. Both can be evaluated readily from simple adsorption experiments.

This paper discusses the concentrations of sulphides and total sulphur in widely spread regions around mine residue deposits, from which rain-water run-of can enter the Vaal River system. Analyses of borehole samples from several deposits are used to establish typical sulphur head grades. It is shown that a high percentage of al the oxidizable, and hence leachable and pollution-causing, sulphur has already been removed. When the residues were fresh, water that came from the deposits was highly polluted, but the dissolved solids from these residues are today of very minor significance. The data are supported by analyses of the drainage streams.

The dynamic behaviour of plant circuits and the available instrumentation determine the control strategies that are appropriate for the duty of the mineral separation plant. Although steady state modelling is appropriate to provide the main requirements of grade and throughput capability of a plant, it is the dynamic characteristics that determine the tolerance of the plant to disturbances and also its controller ability. This paper explores these issues with respect to the additional use of dynamic modelling to achieve these objectives.

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology used in a current PhD research study at the University of the Witwatersrand. Right now the South African mining industry is a high-profile, vital contributor to the nation just as it has been for the past one hundred and twenty-six years since the discovery of diamonds-perhaps even further back if the mining of copper, iron ore, tin, and other minerals in earlier centuries is included. The media in 1995, as has been the case over the years, bear testimony to the complex interactions between the industry and its stakeholders: shareholders, government, employees and their unions, training and educational institutions, researchers, markets, the public, and suppliers of goods, services, and infrastructure. The pressures and challenges that the industry continues to face can be summarized as safety and health, competitiveness, and social and environmental responsibility. There are no surprises here. The motivation for the industry to perform well in these areas is clear; the focus I intend to bring is on the most important tool required for success-that of good mining engineering. This Address sets out - to review the mining aspects that have been discussed in South Africa during the first five years of the decade, a discussion that shows the return of the country as an important mining forum, confirms the role of professional institutes and associations in the development of mining engineering, and brings current relevant issues into focus - to highlight the vital role of mining engineering in the industry, and to identify priorities for the remainder of the decade - to provide the prospective mining engineer, the mining-engineering student and trainee, and the practising mining engineer and mine manager with a better appreciation of the mining-engineering discipline. institutes and ssociations

Geological, tectonic, geochemical and geophysical data were utilized for the mineral resource assessment of the Biga Peninsula in NW Turkey. During the deductive phase of the project multivariate statistical methods were applied to accentuate characteristic parameters which sufficiently describe the different types of Pb - Zn mineralization. The parameters most likely to be indicative of mineral occurrences were determined. In the following prognostic phase these parameters were further statistically treated to determine favourability indexes for the occurrence of a deposit within each cell of the training area. Preliminary results of probabilistic, univariate and multivariate methods are presented.

The development of an accounting code for the metallurgical industry has been debated for many years. Following the series of tumultuous economic events in the nineties and earlier this century that have affected business, there was much need for legislation to be passed to minimize potential risk. One of the consequences to affect the mining industry was the enhancement of existing geological codes for reporting. In parallel the sponsors of AMIRA have taken the brave step to develop a generic code for metal accounting that embraces the full gamut of industry. In this paper the code will be reviewed in the context of metallurgical accounting as it applies to coal preparation. This paper provides the background for this development and an insight into the mechanism for the debate for the generation of this code. The key elements of the code as it applies to the coal industry are explained but most importantly the key opportunities are highlighted.
