Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in1983 with the formation of De Beers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around 1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geo-survey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. DeBeers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geo-survey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in DeBeers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities are also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydro transport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet-pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

Dr Hanekom I would like to thank Dr Hanekom for a very valuable -contribution; it summarizes careful statistical test work which was an omission from the original paper. Minor manipulative details, the application of a finer measuring graticule and the reproducibility of the procedure are described and the author accepts with gratitude this ready-made answer to the first and second points of Dr Finkelstein's comments. Mr Williamson The author is indebted to Mr Williamson for historical background to early experiments with captive bubbles and it is conceded that the original paper described another avenue to an old flotation goal. The field of application is restricted and we would not work with all the material illustrated by Klassen and Mokrousov.1 The particles in Figure 74(a) are far too large and irregular; material in Figures (b) through (d) could be employed for semi-quantitative work in spite of obvious disadvantages; Figure 74(f) represents ideal conditions. We have studied this mineral-collector association in the size range given and results were satisfactory. For larger pick-up values than that illustrated an induction period of more than 0.01 second was required (actually 90 seconds for a maximum bubble load at pH 7.2 with 25 g/t oleic acid!). Mr Slander and Mr Kooij Researchworkers in a practical mineral development laboratory may well ask what contribution yet another micro-technique can make to the problems of large scale ore flotation. The obvious answer is that there can be little or no direct translation of results obtained with a static system comprising air bubble and pure mineral concentrate to a dynamic multicomponent operation. However, for the rapid study of one mineral or variable some small scale apparatus must be employed. In the Anglo American Research Laboratory, the described semi-quantitative pick-up technique has filled a niche and requirement. For ourselves, the system represents a definite advance over the contact angle approach in that samples of minerals conventionally prepared in laboratory or plant may be used, which is a desired step nearer flotation. We bracket this pick-up apparatus with the Hallimond tube1,2 and evidence is now to hand that pick-up curves may often be related to flotation recoveries obtained from this tube with pure mineral samples and from the Fuerstenau glass cell3 with the total ore at low pulp densities. We would not wish to push the comparison of pick-up results past this stage for there is much published development work relating the Hallimond and Fuerstenau equipment to flotation on a larger scale. At the Anglo American Research Laboratory for example, a test in a Fuerstenau cell is often the final integrated step in laboratory investigations into the TORCO process. As these contributors rightly point out, pick-up tests can offer nothing towards the determination of optimum reagent dosage for large scale flotation. This is the function of bench-type flotation cells with up to 2 kg batches of ore. At this level, collector performance and consumption and physical properties of the froth are more comparable with large scale operation. The pick-up cell, Hallimond tube and Fuerstenau cell are essentially equipment from which the effect of control parameters can be derived. For the assessment of collector behaviour, the pick-up approach is rapid and economic and we offer here a pick-up contribution towards the flotation of Witwatersrand uraninite with anionic sulphonate collectors (Fig. 1). A large crystal of the local mineral was not available for contact angle measurements and owing to its low concentration in Witwatersrand gold-bearing reef, a small sample was laboriously obtained by tabling, superpanning and heavy medium separation. The pick-up values of a sized portion were determined by the described procedure in the presence of nine petroleum sulphonate collectors. Responses fell into two categories; "normal" curves (dotted lines) and a group of collectors which were very active at low concentration but showed depression of pick-up at the higher levels. The similarity in form of curves for collectors 1 and 3 was apparent and reagent 3 was found to be simply a diluent of 1. Otherwise, collector performance could not be related to either sulphonate content or molecular weight of the active constituent. However, reagent 2 gave the best performance in a bench flotation cell with regard to overall uranium distribution but, as predicted, reagent 1 yielded the best grades. Later pick-up tests with a similar class of collector have suggested that depression at high reagent concentrations may be due to "bubble armouring" whereby an hydrophilic air-liquid interface is produced which rejects mineral attachment. Prolonged investigations with the same mineral sample have not been required except for the study of uraninite which lasted for more than a year. Variation in pick-up response could not be detected over this period during which the mineral was stored under distilled water. The only visible change was a small efflorescence of lead sulphate, readily removed and decanted off after stirring with a glass rod in the sample tube. In its main role as a "trouble-shooter", the pick-up method is applied to fresh mineral samples taken from a flotation plant and soon discarded or from a current run in the ore-dressing laboratory. After production of a concentrate, a solvent cycle, as described in the original paper, may be required to remove heavy organics or other contaminants as when a sample has been taken from circuits containing detergents, grease or return flotation solutions. This solvent cycle will not remove chemisorbed collectors and we prefer not to work with minerals from flotation tailings or with pick-up cell discards. It has been thought preferable to answer the contributors' other apprehensions with regard to sample preparation, activators, depressants and the physical properties of reagents in another paper on offer to this Journal. It covers pick-up investigations relating to the flotation of nickeliferous pyrrhotite at two Anglo American Corporation Mines, which approach seemed the correct orientation for a reply to another contributor to this paper.

The kinetics of the reduction of chromite from the LG-6 layer of the Bushveld Complex in Fe-Cr-C alloys were studied in the temperature range 15OO°C to 1680°C under an inert argon atmosphere. The rotating cylinder technique was used, and the rotational speed of the chromite cylinder ranged from 0 to 1000 r/min. The melt consisted of 30 to 80 per cent chromium and 2 to 8 per cent carbon. The initial chromium-te-iron ratios of the melts varied between 0,42 and 4,95. The reduction of chromite spinel was analysed in terms of the decarburization of the metal. It was found that decarburization increased with an increase in the temperature, the carbon content of the bath, and the rotational speed of the cylinder up to 400 r/min, after which it remained almost constant. Decarburization also increased with an increase in the chromium content up to about 50 per cent chromium but, at higher chromium contents, it decreased. In the early stage of the reduction, up to about 30 minutes of reaction time, the liquid-state mass transfer of oxygen was found to be the most likely rate-determining step. The apparent activation energy was calculated to be 84,864 kJ per mole of oxygen. In the later stage, diffusion of iron and/or chromium in the solid state is the most likely rate-determining step. The apparent activation energy for the diffusion was calculated to be 471,18 kJ/mol.

An editorial in the April 1990 edition of Mining Magazine is worth a wider audience in South Africa, particularly as the SAIMM enters its own centenary decade and the process of change in the minerals industry world-wide makes increasing demands on the professionalism of its leaders. The editorial considers the changing status of engineers, who up to the 1880s had been held in high regard by society. Alumina and bauxite Economists forecast a slower economic growth rate in 1990, but expect continued increase in demand for aluminum at a 3 per cent annual rate during the decade. Structural and numerical analysis Struceng & Femcad (structural analysis and finiteelement method) is a conference and exhibition that is to be held in Grenoble (France) on 17th and 18th October, 1990. It is sponsored by the Institute for Industrial Technology Transfer (ITT-International).

This paper will review some methods used to manage geotechnical risk at Damang Pit Cutback. The pit depth is designed up to 250m with push back on the eastern and western walls of the existed and depleted Railway Cutback (RCB) pit. The geotechnical design was presented by SRK Perth, focussing on the optimisation of the bench face angle which finally evolved with ?steep slope strategy?; 24m at 800 and 24m at 750 on the eastern and western walls respectively. The east wall was designed strategically to optimise the proximity of the tailings dam to the final pit crest of the push back. The pit has experienced failure in the weathered profile transgressing through the transitional material into the fresh rock at different location of the east wall since development in July 2005. To ensure stability and to minimise ore loss, the east wall has been redesigned using 700 batter angles and reduced berm width of 4m compared to 800 and 8.5 berm width of 24m bench height. The paper will also discuss how slope failures to the east wall had been sustained, managed and monitored to enhance production. Emphasis is placed on slope management at Damang which includes the principles of wall control blast, visual inspection, slope depressurisation and the state-of-the art of slope monitoring using Autoslope automated prism monitoring. Future slope monitoring is considering the use of 3D Laser and Radar to provide early warning so that evacuation could be effected. The intension is to provide mine personnel the means to identify risk areas during mining activities.

"Two types of extreme event, earthquakes and rainfall, potentially affect open pit slope stability. In the case of earthquakes, there are rather well-developed analysis procedures and acceptability criteria. The analysis procedures relate mainly to selection of the dynamic loading either through design earthquakes and/or pseudo-static seismic coefficients. The acceptance criteria are typically expressed in terms of a minimum safety factor in pseudo-static analyses. The acceptance criteria are often promulgated by governments despite the fact that no open pit slope has ever been adversely affected by an earthquake. This paper explains why open pit slopes are seemingly more resistant to dynamic loads than natural landforms, which can experience catastrophic landslides.Extreme rainfall events are much more likely to cause open pit slope problems than earthquakes. Two types of problem are common – slope erosion and slope instability. Slope erosion is often mitigated by appropriate surface water controls. Slope instability due to elevated transient water pressures is more difficult to mitigate. Analysis procedures and acceptability criteria are rare. This paper will discuss the mechanisms for rainfall-induced slope instability, as well as analysis methods. Examples will be discussed and analysis methods are proposed. An investigation was conducted into the reactions between the slag system MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2(AI2O3) and the alloy system Mn-Fe-Si-(C). Synthetic slags representative of plant melts and a plant alloy were reacted in alumina crucibles at temperatures of 1400°C, 1450°C, 1550°C, and 1600°C. In similar experiments, slags were used that comprised a South African manganese ore with various amounts of lime and several synthetic alloys with various silicon contents and manganese-to-iron ratios. These experiments were conducted in a vertical molybdenum-wound resistance furnace with full temperature control. Slag-to-alloy ratios were also varied during the tests. The rate of reduction of Mn.O3 and the MnO from the slag by the silicon in the alloy was extremely rapid, most of the reaction being completed within five minutes. The strongly exothermic nature of the reaction resulted in considerable generation of heat at the slag-alloy interface, causing convectional stirring of the contents of the crucible and promoting the rate of reaction. Equilibrium was usually attained after fifteen minutes. The major limitation governing the recovery of manganese is the need for the silicon content of the alloy to meet a maximum specification of 2 per cent. Higher concentrations of silicon in the final alloy of between 8 and 12 per cent favour good recoveries of manganese from the slag, but, since such an alloy is not salable, lower recoveries must apparently be tolerated. In alloys of 2 per cent silicon, low activities of the silicon are responsible for poor recoveries of manganese. The activity of MnO in the slag can be increased by moderate additions of CaO and small amounts of MgO, i.e., by an increase in the basicity of the slag.

To be held from the 9th to 14th April, 1972, in Johannesburg, South Africa. GENERAL INFORMATION The first symposium in the series was staged by the University of Arizona in 1961. Since then Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University and the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers have acted together with the University of Arizona as co-sponsors of the series. The 9th Symposium in 1970 was sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy together with McGill University and Ecole Poly technique in Montreal. The 10th Symposium, the first to be held outside the North American continent, is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation) in close collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. OBJECTIVES Mineral ventures increase in scale and complexity. The planning and control of these projects requires more and more sophisticated techniques. The intention of the symposium is to pool and exchange experience and knowledge and also to discuss new and potential developments. The papers presented in the main sessions, which will extend over one week, will together indicate progress which has been made in the successful application of operations research, mathematical, statistical and computer methods in each of the various aspects of operation in the mineral industry. A coherent account will be developed by consideration, in consecutive sessions, of the stages through which mineral prospects evolve in the course of their life. Primary aims are thus to stimulate discussion in depth of previous applications, to highlight current trends and to provide guidelines for future developments. PARTICIPATION The intention is to bring together persons responsible for managing the various operations in the mineral industry and the workers engaged in the development of mathematical and computer methods relevant thereto. SYMPOSIUM TOPICS 1. Market Analysis-demand and supply trends, models of mineral markets, price prediction. 2. Exploration and ore reserve estimation--exploration strategies, choice of drilling and sampling patterns, quantification of geological information, geo-statistical analysis, ore reserve assessment. Storage and retrieval of associated data. 3. Project design and analysis-influence on viability and risk of capitalisation, scale and method of operation, processing, uncertainties in design premises. 4. Planning of operation-planning and scheduling of construction, of development and of depletion of ore reserves. Logistics, rock mechanics and ventilation. 5. Control of operations-financial, production, cost and quality control as applied to both mining and processing. Flow and processing of relevant information. CALL FOR PAPERS An invitation is extended to intending authors to submit a synopsis, in 200 to 300 words, of papers which would develop the themes outlined above. The Programme Sub-Committee will choose, on the basis of these synopses, some 20 to 30 authors who will be invited to submit papers. Selection will be aimed at the provision of a coherent structure. Other authors may be invited to submit short papers either as contributions to the primary papers or for brief discussion in ancillary sessions which will be scheduled to follow on the main sessions. The official language of the symposium will be English. A tour which will include mineral projects of interest and the Kruger National Game Park will be arranged in the week following the symposium. LADIES' PROGRAMME Arrangements will be made for the reception and entertainment of ladies. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation will be available at hotels convenient to the symposium venue. The cost of reasonable hotel accommodation in Johannesburg is in the range R5 to RIO (7 to 14 U.S. dollars) per person per night. The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should be of sufficient high standard and contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Their publication should be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to mining and industry. Authors must realize that because a mine shaft is new or the mine itself is newly established, this in itself does not justify a paper unless significantly new techniques or processes were involved in the opening-up procedure. A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of less well chosen material. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Papers should be submitted at least three months prior to the intended date of presentation. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of foolscap paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 11/2 inches, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. The Centenary Distinguished Lecture was held on Thursday, 24th March, 1994 at the Convention Centre of the Sandton Sun, Johannesburg at 20:00. Herewith the proceedings that followed. P.R. Janisch: The South African Institute of Mining and Metalurgy began life one hundred years ago tonight, and eight years (almost to the day) after the 1886 discovery of gold, which has impacted so profoundly on the course of events in our country since then. The Early Years That discovery was a mater of fortune, but not in the sense of the conventional prospector's lucky strike. Canny explorers, such as the Strubens, had been around for some years and, if George Harrison had not stumbled over the Main Reef when he did, someone else would surely have done so within months. The element of luck was that the gold-bearing rocks of the Witwatersrand actually lay exposed to sight. We now know that they are something of the order of 2,5 billion years old. Rocks of that age are usually covered by younger formations. In fact, the bulk of the Witwatersrand Basin is covered by lava, dolomite, and Karoo measures. What, one wonders, would our history have been had the Karoo, which stops at the Vaal, extended no more than 60 kilometres further north. Dr H. Scot-Russell A piece of advice attributed to Paul Kruger, the who was President of the South African Republic one hundred years ago, was the following: 'Seek from the past that which is good, and build on it for the future'. It is advice that can be applied universally and, whether deliberately or not, it must have motivated my predecessors when this Institute celebrated its 40th, 50th, and 75th birthdays. Those milestones were each marked by retrospectives, as Peter Janisch has so ably presented tonight on our hundredth anniversary. The parallels do not end there. We find ourselves in times no less daunting than those our predecessors. Next month will see the birth of a new kind of South Africa; so did May 1902, May 1919, and May 1948.

"Mining in the Carletonville area of the Witwatersrand Basin predates 1934. Owing to the depletion of higher grade ore, the current activities focus increasingly on the extraction of lower grade secondary reefs as well as remnant extraction. Of particular interest is multi-reef remnant extraction. Numerical modelling was conducted to investigate some rock engineering aspects of remnants being understoped on a secondary reef horizon. An analysis of the stress evolution in the middling between two reef horizons indicated that a zone of high major and low minor principal stress develops between the two reefs. This indicates a high risk of violent shear failure. Some pillars were nevertheless successfully understoped in the past and a study was conducted to better understand this phenomenon. An ’extended’ energy release rate concept introduced by Napier and Malan (2014) proved to be useful for investigating this problem. It was found that bedding planes and lithology appears to play a role in the stable dissipation of energy in multi-reef remnant geometries. The study indicated that the stope convergence and the various energy components are affected by the presence, position, and properties of a bedding plane. The energy solutions are complex and sometimes counterintuitive. Care should be exercised when modelling specific cases. The modelling was nevertheless valuable as it indicated that energy dissipated on weak layers may reduce the risk of violent failure in a multi-reef mining scenario. Additional work is required to investigate if crushing on the reef plane plays a prominent role when mining these remnants. IntroductionTo extend the lives of the Witwatersrand gold mines, work is being conducted to include a larger number of remnants and pillars in the reserve base of the mines. According to Jager and Ryder (1999), a remnant is an unmined block of ground surrounded by extensive mining. Remnants are typically left because of adverse or difficult mining conditions caused by geological structures, poor ground conditions, low grade, or rockburst damage (Durrheim, 1997). In contrast, pillars are typically the result of rock engineering designs to control energy release rates (ERR) and seismicity. During the early 1900s, remnants formed by the practice of scattered mining layouts had a significant effect on seismicity. Numerous task teams were appointed during this period. As the industry expanded, the severity of rockbursting increased and the research was formalized after the 1960s. Various recommendations were made and many of these are still used as best practice today (e.g. Jager and Ryder, 1999)."

"SynopsisSlime coating is one of the most common ways for serpentines to contaminate metallic mineral concentrates during traditional flotation of coarse sulphide particles. This could pose quite a complicated and challenging problem in the case of some types of low-grade and finely disseminated Cu-Ni ores bearing high serpentine contents. This is the case for the copper and nickel sulphides from the Yunnan Mine, China. Previous batch flotation tests of this ore resulted in satisfactory recoveries of 86.92% Cu, 54.92% Ni, and 74.73% Pt+Pd, and concentrate grades of 4.02% Cu, 3.24% Ni, and 76.61 g/t Pt+Pd. However, the MgO content in these concentrates was more than 19%. In the current study, microflotation tests and settling rate tests were introduced to investigate the effects of a combination of strong collectors (a 2:1 weight ratio of butyl xanthate and butyl ammonium dithophosphate) on entrainment of serpentines in metallic mineral concentrate, as well as visual observations of the concentrates in suspension using still photography. All test results indicated the presence of serpentines entrapped in the hydrophobic flocs that resulted from these collectors, even with the use of effective gangue depressants. These strong collectors are used to flocculate the ultra-fine sulphides by forming loose and ‘fluffy’ hydrophobic flocs. However, these hydrophobic flocs may also be able to load or entrap some serpentine slimes into the concentrate, and this entrained serpentine could be harder to remove by using depressants or intensified conditioning than serpentine slime coating on the particle surfaces.IntroductionSerpentine minerals, which have the generalized composition (Mg,Fe)3Si2O5(OH)4, can be easy to crush and grind due to their convoluted and bent layered structures. These serpentines can hinder the enrichment of some metallic minerals and dilute their concentrates by entrainment during flotation. The resulting high pulp viscosities, slime coatings, and high content of dissolved ions adversely affect the flotation recoveries of copper and nickel sulphides, and high levels of MgO entrained in the concentrates lead to heavy penalties from smelters. Since the quality of nickel flotation concentrate depends heavily on its MgO content (generally less than 6–7% for No.1 or 2 grade nickel concentrate according to the standard requirement from National Nonferrous Industry), reducing the entrainment of serpentine during flotation is becoming more and more pressing. Previous research has focused on the collectors and depressants that are commonly used in copper-nickel flotation, as well as their interaction mechanisms."

This paper investigated the ability of eight common hydrodynamic models – tanks in series (TIS); three compartmental model configurations (Comp-1, Comp-2 and Comp-3); advection dispersion (AD); piston exchange (PE); piston exchange-diffusion variant (PE-D) and piston dispersion exchange (PDE) – to simulate residence time distribution (RTD) data generated from tracer tests conducted on a packed bed composed of different size fractions of malachite ore. The chosen materials were packed into 0.1 m internal diameter columns to a depth of 0.155 m and drip irrigated at 5.11 L/ m2.h. The four size fractions tested were: 1 – 2 mm, 2 – 2.8 mm, 4.75 – 5.6 mm and 13.6 – 16 mm. Step-up tracer tests were conducted using potassium chloride. The results showed that an increase in the particle size of the malachite ore had little effect on overall bed porosity but resulted in significantly lower values of liquid holdup. Two of the monoporosity models tested, TIS and Comp-2, were the most affected by the changes in bed size fraction due to their inherent inability to cope with high degrees of non-ideal flow present in the larger particle systems. The dual porosity models performed relatively better with the dominant trend being a reduction in dynamic to total liquid holdup as particle size increased. Of all the models tested, the PDE and TIS models were the best and worst performers respectively, with R2 values averaging at 0.997 and 0.679 across all experiments respectively. Though the Comp-1, Comp-3 and PE-D models also performed well, the addition of the dispersion coefficient to take the axial spread of fluid molecules into account added a layer of complexity that allowed the PDE model to perform relatively better than the other dual porosity models. "Although the first large-scale application of copper recovery by solvent extraction took place in Zambia in the early 1970s, it is only in the last decade that this technology has become widely employed in this part of the world and is now a mainstay unit operation in copper hydrometallurgical flow sheets. The mineralogy of the ores of the African Copperbelt, and hence the characteristics of African leach liquors, differs significantly from those in Chile and the southwestern USA, where copper solvent extraction has had a long and successful history. These differences provide operators, metallurgists, reagent vendors, and engineers with many challenges: new approaches are needed to adapt solvent-extraction technology for successful implementation in this region. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copperbelt, discusses differences compared with other parts of the world, and looks at some of the challenges and opportunities presented by these flow sheets. IntroductionFollowing the success of the Rancher’s Bluebird and Bagdad solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX–EW) operations in Arizona in the late 1960s, the Tailings Leach Plant at Chingola, Zambia, became the first large-scale copper SX plant in the world, commissioned in 1974. Despite the equipment design now being outdated, this plant still continues to operate successfully, indicating the versatility and adaptability of this technology. Today, there are some 75 copper SX operations worldwide with cathode production above 10 kt/a. The top ten producers currently account for about 40% of the global 4.3 Mt/a SX–EW copper production. South America (predominantly Chile and Peru) is the largest copper cathodeproducing region, with annual production of some 2 Mt. The Central African Copperbelt (Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)) is second, with cathode production of 1.2 Mt/a, and North America (USA and Mexico) third, producing close to 0.8 Mt/a Cu (Solvay Cytec data, 2014). The remaining 0.35 Mt/a comes from all other regions combined (referred to as ‘Rest-of-World’)."

A study of fatigue-crack growth in a rail steel and an associated weld metal showed that fatigue cracks in the deformed rail steel had slightly higher growth rates than in undeformed rail steel. The crack growth in the weld metal was appreciably faster than either and exhibited plateaux that were above the upper bound reported for rail steels, The cyclic-life curves showed that, over an indicated service period of 8 years, both the deformed and the undeformed rail steels should not be prone to fatigue failures under the defined mechanical conditions, For the weld metal, the cyclic-life curves indicated the possibility of premature fatigue failures but, as al the input parameters represented a 'worst case' situation, this assessment could wel be ultra-conservative. In the rail steels at low levels, the extension of the fatigue cracks occurred by ductile striated growth. At a Kmax level of 35 MPa .J/n, cleavage facets formed initially on the surface of the fatigue fractures, and their incidence increased with Kmax until the onset of fast failure, The microstructure of the deformed rail steel exhibited cleavage facets at a slightly lower Kmaxvalue, and contained more cleavage facets at a given K level, than the microstructure of the undeformed rail steel. The average size of the cleavage facets agreed well with the pearlite nodule dimensions of 60 to 100 ILm. The microstructure of the weld metal was much coarser and contained columnar grains. At al f.K levels, the dominant fracture mode was cleavage, with small isolated regions of ductile striated fatigue cracks. The size of the cleavage facets varied from 150 to 600 ILm, and such a variation may be explained by the fact that cracking generally occurs in association with the pro-eutectoid ferite phase, and that this phase is distributed along some boundaries of prior austenite grains and the boundaries of the coarser columnar grains.

On 8th August, 1973, 57 members of the Institute visited Prieska Copper Mine at Copperton in the North Western Cape. After tea, the group was welcomed by the Management of the Mine, and Mr Grobler, the General Manager, gave an introductory talk. After they had been taken on a bus tour of the property, the members split up into groups and proceeded underground or to the concentrator. Of special interest to the mining members were the rock-handling methods in use at the mine. The stoping method that has been adopted is the continuous, long-hole sub-level open stoping system. The broken ore is moved with rubbertyred front-end loaders from the stope drawpoints to the ore passes. On the main tramming levels, the ore is collected by electric locomotives and discharged into the main shaft system at the bottom. At the shaft ore-pass system, a gyratory crusher that can accept rocks up to 1 m in diameter has been installed. The crushed product (minus 150 mm in diameter) will then be hoisted by a Koepe winder, which has a rated capacity of 900 tons per hour. The mine is also served by a declined roadway from surface, which facilitates the movement of heavy equipment. The most striking aspect is the productivity that can be achieved by the use of a trackless-mining system. For the production of 230 000 tons per month, it is estimated that 6 stopers and 7 developers will be required. The total labour force will be approximately 2500-2000 Bantu, 200 Coloured, and 300 Europeans. Training of maintenance and operating personnel is of the utmost importance, and it was interesting to note the extent to which non-White labour is being used in these occupations. Lunch was served at the single quarters, after which the group proceeded to the airfield for the return trip to Johannesburg. On behalf of the visitors, Professor de V. One of the main bottlenecks in the carbon-in pulp process for the recovery qf gold is the elution procedure, which typically requires the heading of caustic cyanide eluants to high temperatures for 16 to 24 hours. The present work demonstrates that sodium sulphide solution as an alternative eluant can effect complete elution in about 4 hours at ambient temperatures. Elution efficiencies of around 100 per cent were obtained in 4 hours with a single pass of eluant containing 0,2 M Na2S and 0,4 NaOH about 10 bed-volumes of eluant The initial rate was slow over the first hour of elution, probably because the activated carbon catalysed the oxidation of sulphide to polysulphide. Elution efficiencies of around 100 per cent were also obtained in less than 4 hours during the batch elution of carbon at liquid-to-solid ratio of about 100. Lower liquid to solid ratio resulted in the re-adsorption of gold, probably owing to the oxidation of sulphide to polysulphide, with the resultant formation of gold complexes that were eluted less readily. Improved rates of elution were obtained at higher sulphide concentrations and pH values greater than about 13. Higher temperatures increased the initial elution rate, but lowered the overall extraction efficiency, probably because of the deposition of elemental gold on the carbon. Variation of the ionic strength by the addition of NaCl had no defect on the elution, which confirms that the elution mechanism in the case of sulphide is different from that when cyanide or I1)1droxide is used as the eluant. It is proposed that the elution of gold by sulphide solutions proceeds by means of an initial step that involves the reaction of polysulphide ions with the adsorbed aurocyanide speeds, forming AuCN on the carbon and thiocyanate in solution. This step is followed by the formation of poorly adsorbed complexes with sulphide ions, such as [AUS3-2]-The presence of polysulphides, whether generated in situ by the catalytic oxidation effect of activated carbon or by the addition of elemental sulphur, reduces the elution rate and efficiency dramatically. This is probably due to the formation of complexes such as AUS-3 and AUS-2 , which have a high adsorption affinity.

The research presented in this paper investigated the practical aspects of the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were conducted on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of Pt, Pd, and Au were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours, and 100 per cent for Pt, 97.4 per cent for Pd, and 99.9 per cent for Au after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while Ni concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, Ni adsorbs at approximately the same rate as the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. The equilibrium loading of gold is exothermic in nature (Fleming and Nicol, 1984) which will result in an increase in gold elution kinetics with an increase in temperature at similar pre-treatment conditions. A similar result was found for the elution of Pt and Pd. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and results suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing due to increased ionic strength.
