Book reviews Fiftieth Annual Report (1971) of the Safety in Mines Research Establishment, published by H. M. Stationery Office, London on behalf of the Department of Trade and Industry. Advances in extractive metallurgy and refining. This excellent volume, published by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, contains all the thirty papers presented at the International Symposium held in London in October, 1971. Electric Melting Practice by A. G. E. Robiette, Charles Griffin and Co. 412 pp. In recent years the application of electric furnaces to melting processes has expanded to such an extent that it has become a topic in its own right, quite distinct from the related subject of electric smelting which is still limited, for the most part, to those areas where inexpensive electrical power is available. Optimum use of manpower by A. J. van Zyl. The sixties represented one of the longest periods of sustained economic growth South Africa has experienced. At the same time it caused a certain amount of inflation and an acute manpower shortage.

The use of dilute sulphur dioxide (SO2) gas mixtures for the oxidation/precipitation of manganese has been explored widely in recent years. The technical merit of the concept is well proven and implementation of the technology on commercial scale is imminent. This paper reviews the technology of manganese removal by means of dilute SO2 gas mixtures and highlights some of the challenges associated with its implementation on industrial scale. A brief review of the technology is presented; the review considers both the mechanism and chemistry of manganese oxidation/precipitation with dilute SO2 gas mixtures. The impact of variables such as temperature, pH and SO2 concentrations on the manganese removal process is assessed. Challenges associated with implementation of the technology on industrial scale are discussed. Gas dispersion is highlighted as a critical design consideration.

Liquidus temperatures in the Cr-Fe-Si system in the composition range representative of ferrochromium-silicide produced in South Africa J. C. M. Wethmar, B.Se. (Eng.) Rand D. D. Howat,U B.Se. Strydom, M.Sc., Ph.D. Alloys in the composition range of chromium, 20 to 50 per cent, iron, 10 to 30 per cent, and silicon, 25 to 55 per cent, were subjected to both differential thermal analysis and the classical quench method so that the liquidus temperatures of ferrochromium-silicide alloys could be determined. The results are presented as liquidus curves on pseudo-binary sections at various ratios of chromium to iron and as liquidus isotherms in the ternary section.

Flyrock remains a significant threat to the health and safety of mine employees and integrity of infrastructure, as well as to the safety of the neighbouring communities and their property. This investigation was motivated by the general lack of fundamental research and mathematically quantifiable data in the literature regarding the relationship between blast design parameters and their impact on flyrock. The focus was to develop a concept that can be used to mathematically quantify the trajectory of flyrock resulting from a blast, which can be used for future research. The ultimate goal for this technique, once it has been fully developed, is to: ➤ Enable mining operations to generate a database with accurate historical flyrock measurements resulting from their blasting operations ➤ Allow research teams to conduct scientific investigations into flyrock and the impact of various blast design parameters ➤ Generate point-cloud data to visualize blasts and flyrock in a virtual reality environment for training and education purposes. This paper summarizes a conceptual technique and preliminary fieldwork that was carried out to determine the technique’s feasibility and motivate further development. The results show conclusively that a modified photogrammetric technique is capable of capturing flyrock data for further processing and analysis. The data acquisition procedure can, at this point, be used to meet the first aim of the project, namely to gather a field database of historical flyrock generation. Further development of the technique is ongoing and it is envisioned that the scientific-based technique will provide a method whereby future flyrock studies will be comparable and that assumptions will be limited.

"Southern Africa is generally thought to be well explored, with only limited potential for major new diamond discoveries. However, Chiadzwa in Zimbabwe and reports of a significant new kimberlite find in Angola are testimony to the dangers attached to an attitude that ‘there is nothing left to find’.Since the major discoveries in the central interior of South Africa in the 1870s, diamond exploration in the region has been led by market and political factors that influence the key exploration drivers of opportunity and value proposition. Unexpected new discoveries by new players always impact on existing producers and, from time to time, denial of opportunity through political or protectionist policies has inhibited investment in exploration.Entrepreneurial exploration appetite in southern Africa will be tempered by the potential value equation and security of investment. Overlaid on this, developments in diamond recovery technologies provide opportunity to reinvigorate current mines and old prospects previously considered too difficult or costly to exploit. Position on the cost curve will remain a key factor for survival in an increasingly competitive environment. IntroductionThe diamond industry in southern Africa boasts a history of 150 years of discovery and mining, forming the cornerstone of development of the core, modern economies at the southern tip of Africa.Since the discovery, in the 1860s and 1870s, of the secondary diamond placers and primary diamond-bearing kimberlite deposits in the central interior of the then Cape Colony and Orange Free State, southern Africa has endured as the pre-eminent diamondproducing region in the world. Notwithstanding periodic competition from significant new discoveries in other parts of the globe and the paucity of recent, new discoveries in the region, its ranking is unlikely to change in the short to medium term.In a geological context the region contains the Kaapvaal-Zimbabwe and Angola-Kasai cratons, identified in terms of Clifford’s rule as areas inherently prospective for diamonds, being underlain by portions of the Earth’s crust that are tectonically stable and older than 1.5 billion years (Clifford, 1992). Although the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) would, in a geographic context, be considered to be part of Central Africa, for the purposes of this review it is included in southern Africa since northeast Angola and the adjacent parts of the DRC form part of the same geological terrane and diamond production from both countries needs to be considered together. Historical and current diamond production from the northeastern parts of the DRC around Kisangani is not considered to be significant and its inclusion in the overall numbers for the DRC does not materially affect the overall picture presented here."

A unique means of obtaining sea-water by G. R. W. WALKER, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Hons.) (Min. Eng.) (Member) Although the mining and treatment operations at The Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa, Limited, are located within an average distance of I km from the Atlantic Ocean, the supply of clear sea-water in large and continuous quantities for use in treatment plants is made difficult by siltation of water-holes and the amount of sand in suspension in the sea itself. The need for sixty million litres of sea-water per day at the new No. 2 treatment plant necessitated the construction of a system that would ensure a continuous and reliable supply. Several sea-water intake schemes were proposed. This paper outlines the need for an improved means of obtaining water and describes the construction of the scheme eventually chosen - a tunnel driven through bedrock for over 400 m beneath the Atlantic Ocean. At the end of the tunnel, two large chambers were excavated from which vertical holes were drilled to intersect the sea-bed.

Flumes are ubiquitous throughout the mining and minerals processing industries as well as being used in the polymer processing and pulp and paper industries. With the increased demand for the transport of highly concentrated slurries in rectangular open channels, there is an impetus for a better understanding of the role of rheology in flow hydraulics. Until recently, design of such channels has been based on either the Chézy or Manning equations used for modelling open channel flow of Newtonian fluids. This has been done for modelling turbulent flow of low concentrated slurries with some success. However, this is not the case for highly concentrated slurries where the flow in the channel is no longer turbulent. Unlike Newtonian fluids, work carried out on flow of pseudo-homogeneous, non-Newtonian fluids in open channels is somewhat limited. Moreover, these results have been published in a variety of sources. This paper attempts to give a critical review of the work carried out on Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow of pseudo-homogeneous non-settling slurries in rectangular open channels. A comparison is also made of the models based on power law, Bingham plastic and Herschel-Bulkley fluids for laminar and turbulent flow in rectangular open channels.

Land rehabilitation transcends the mere establishment of vegetation across disturbed landscapes; it should be conceptualised as a specialised ecological reconstruction process. This process necessitates a long-term perspective on the success of land repurposing. It requires a continuum of inputs specified and managed by a dedicated and qualified custodian to ensure the sustained economic viability and ecological sustainability of the land. Based on the authors’ combined experience and field observations over more than five decades, they advocate for an urgent shift away from traditional land rehabilitation practices toward a paradigm centred on land capability reconstruction and active stewardship. The prevailing rehabilitation culture has overly simplified the process to a mere revegetation exercise, which is fundamentally incompatible with the comprehensive requirements for sustainable land capability. While the regulatory framework provides valuable guidance for obtaining a mine’s social license to operate, a paradigm reset is essential. Mining companies must prioritise rehabilitation quality, set achievable sustainability goals, and establish clear pathways and milestones to meet relinquishment criteria. Currently, the status quo view—a model reliant on outsourced contracting and agricultural approaches—is that mine rehabilitation is a one-time intervention rather than a complex, systemic, and long-term process. This perspective presents significant challenges, as the success of ecological interventions can only be accurately assessed over extended timeframes, often spanning decades. Shortsighted rehabilitation specifications, coupled with practitioners operating within agricultural decision frameworks, frequently overlook the necessity for integrated rehabilitation expertise and the scientific foundation essential for designing and implementing effective ecological outcomes. A lack of long-term monitoring information impedes the required adaptive management of rehabilitated systems and, therefore, delays the transition towards final land use. This short approach costs the mining industry millions annually, often without recognising the inadequacies in long-term liability mitigation and the substandard ecological success achieved. The disconnect between procurement processes, the qualifications of service providers, and the unclear pathways to relinquishment can impede successful rehabilitation outcomes, frequently undermining progress toward sustainability milestones. Unless there is a fundamental reset of the land rehabilitation culture, pursuing sustainability will remain an elusive and perhaps impossible objective. Consequently, mining companies may hesitate to fully commit to sustainable land rehabilitation practices, as the prospects for relinquishment and final closure remain uncertain at best.

"Since 1964, Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd., has been developing and using production scheduling methods for optimizing its metallurgical operations in the short term (up to one year). Medium-range metallurgical planning has been possible only by successive evaluations of a single-year L.P. A modified version of Rosenbrock's direct search technique has now been developed to allow multi-year optimization of both mining and metallurgy for medium-range planning. The modifications to the search technique have produced a marked increase in computational efffciency for this heavily constrained problem in many variables and the system is a usable planning tool, given a reasonably powerful computer. The plans are 'optimum' in the sense that they yield the maximum present value of the operations.Each of the resulting five-yearly mine plans forms the basis for further detailed metallurgical evaluation by the established production scheduling system."

SYNOPSIS This paper describes simple calculations to evaluate the stability of hangingwall and footwall strata at the work¬ing face and in backfilled areas. It shows that the benefits of support provided by backfill can best be realized when the fill is placed as close to the face as possible. The main beneficial effects of fill are that it reduces the stope span, at the same time providing a damping effect on vibrations, and prevents the fall-out of blocks in filled areas, thus maintaining the competence of the strata.

As you pointed out, furnace power factor (and consequently transformer MVA rating) depends upon the inductive reactance, and so it is desirable to design for the lowest possible value of this parameter. The further introduction on the primary side of the transformer of capacitors, whether in shunt or in series, increases the network power factor but does not alter the furnace power factor; that is, the phase angle between electrode to- hearth voltage and current remains unchanged. A control philosophy to be applied by Lonmin to maintain constant electrode immersion in their no. 1 circular smelting furnace is put forward. This control philosophy is facilitated though a combination of thermodynamic models used to predict the slag composition and empirical correlations to estimate the furnace geometric factor as well as the slag conductivity. The model can determine the operating resistance set point required in order to maintain a desired electrode immersion as a function of the feeds to the furnace, slag level and temperature. If modifying the resistance set point cannot maintain the desired immersion without moving out of the furnace P-V-I operating envelope, the model can be used to determine the amount of slag modifiers (silica or lime) required to shift the slag chemistry back into a region where the immersion can be controlled though resistance set point manipulation.

"The hydrofluoric acid (HF) industry in South Africa uses normalized mild steel (SA 516 Gr 70) for the storage and distribution of its technical-grade product (70% HF). The technical-grade acid is split from the anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF) product during distillation just after HF is produced, in a stainless-steel-lined kiln, from the reaction of calcium fluoride (CaF2) with sulphuric acid (H2SO4). Uniform corrosion of the storage tanks is mitigated during commissioning by contacting the steel with 70% HF. A corrosive reaction takes place (2H+ + 2F- + Fe - H2 + FeF2) to form scale inside the tank which diminishes the attack of the steel by fresh HF, thus prolonging the service life expectancy of the vessels. This iron fluoride scale in the vessel grows continually, resulting in corrosion of the vessels continuing at a predictable rate (approx.0.5 mm/a) since the first commissioning of the tanks at Necsa in 1993. In early 2012, an increase in the average corrosion rate of the tanks to 3 mm/a measured at and below the liquid band in the storage vessels was noted. Three months later the corrosion rate had increased to 30 mm/a, just before the first leak from the tank was detected. The tanks were decommissioned shortly afterwards and an investigation revealed that the rapid corrosion was due to the presence of increased levels (>50 ppm) of nitric acid (HNO3) in the tanks, which attacked the fluoride layer protecting the steel.The oxidation characteristics of high concentrations of HNO3 with low concentrations of HF on stainless steel surface treatment are well documented. The effects of low levels of nitric acid on the corrosion of steels in sulphuric acid are also known, but no suitable published data currently exists on corrosion by high HF concentrations with low HNO3 concentrations. Establishing the rate and mechanism of corrosion by HNO3 (0.1 to 1%) in 70% HF is currently a high priority for the HF industry in South Africa and will become increasingly important in the near future due to depleting fluorite reserves and cheaper, but less efficient, processes producing H2SO4 with higher impurity levels, which were not anticipated in the original plant design. The aim of this study is to simulate the corrosion conditions in the plant on a laboratory scale in order to establish the corrosion characteristics of the steels used in the HF plant, which are increasingly exposed to the HNO3 impurities that tend to concentrate in the final technical-grade HF acid product."

1. Book reviews ? Second International Conference on Hydrocyclones. Cranfield (Bedford, MK43 OAT, England), BHRA Fluid Engineering Centre, 1984. £33. Reviewer: R.P. King This volume contains the 28 papers presented at the Second International Conference on Hydrocyclones, which was held in Bath (England) in September 1984. The format and presentation of the papers are similar to those of the first volume in the series, and this volume con¬tinues the series as an authoritative account of much of the research work associated with hydrocyclones that is being undertaken throughout the world. The volume was produced from camera-ready copy supplied by the authors, but the quality of reproduction is very high and both text and figures are legible throughout the volume. Although most of the work reported deals with the hydrocyclone as a classification device, important sections are devoted to liquid-liquid separations and heavy¬medium separations.

Reviewer: P.R. Janisch The progress of mining and metallurgy in Australia and their contribution to that nation's economy closely parallel those of South Africa. Australia's was the second of the three great gold rushes of the nineteenth century. It was centred on Bendigo and Ballarat in Victoria, and occurred in the 1850's, a few years after California's forty-niners. The California goldfield also gave birth to the now common term for a tabular gold bearing deposit-a 'reef'. Amongst the fortune-seekers were sailors who had jumped ship on hearing of the riches to be found on land. When the gold ran out, and with it the money, the sailors found themselves stuck on a reef'. But others, more canny, had accumulated the means to move on, and some came to the Transvaal on the news of the Barberton discoveries. One of them was George Harrison.

(Visitor) Twenty-one heat acclimatized subjects were assessed for the degree of acclimatization attained with respect to heart rate, rectal temperature, and sweat rate during a standard four-hour heat-stress test. Thereafter, they were put on light duties in cool environm ents for four weeks, except for four hours of exposure to heat every seventh day. Their state of heat acclimatization was again assessed two days after the final week's exposure. Although heart rates and body temperatures showed significant increases over the initial values, no differences were observed in sweat rates and, in general, the subjects were rated as still adequately acclimatized to heat.

It is well known that job-related hazards and individual factors influence occupational injuries. However, research involving coalminers has been limited. This case-control study assessed the relationships of job-related hazards and individual/life style factors with injuries among underground coal miners. It compared 245 cases with at least one injury during the previous two-year period with 245 matched controls with no injury. The data were gathered via personal interview and analysed using the conditional logistic model. The significant risk factors were materials handling (adjusted OR 5.15), poor environmental/working conditions (2.63), geological/strata control-related hazards (2.35), lack of formal education (3.00), sleep disorders (1.86), alcohol consumption (2.32), disease (2.23), having a large family (5.40), and risk-taking behaviour (9.40). Machine-related hazards, sleep disorders and alcohol consumption primarily affected workers aged less than 45 years; whereas, environment/working condition-related hazards, presence of disease, smoking, risk-taking behaviour and large family size were more likely among workers aged 45 or over. "One of the most important performance indicators of a dense medium cyclone (DMC) circuit is the Tromp curve, and by extension the separation density and Ecart Probable (Ep) values. The densimetric profiles of DMC product streams have been traditionally acquired using heavy liquid sinkfloat analysis, which has certain disadvantages, such as the associated safety and health risks. More recently, non-toxic media such as lithium hetero-polytungstates (LST) have been used, with the desired densities being achieved by maintaining the solutions at specific temperatures. However, the high costs of these liquids can be prohibitive. The long turnaround time of the sink-float analysis is a further disadvantage for timeous interventions to the operating set-points of the DMC process.The RhoVol technology can generate the density distribution of a batch of particles in a rapid, accurate, repeatable, and safe manner. Additional data of interest, such as particle size and shape, are also measured and reported on a per-particle basis. Furthermore, samples can be sorted into discrete sorting bins based on any of the measured parameters of the particle, making further analyses of the material possible.This technology has applications across all commodities that use the DMC, particularly in the size fractions –25 +8 mm and –8 +3 mm. To date, laboratory results have proved very encouraging – separation densities are within 5% of traditional sink-float results, and the technology is being introduced to diamond DMC plants. IntroductionDense medium separation is a commonly applied beneficiation technique for the density separation of valuable products from crushed ores. The industrial applications of dense medium separation have been summarized and reviewed by various authors (Scott and Napier-Munn, 2000; Bosman, 2014; Napier- Munn, 2018). Dense medium cyclones (DMCs) are widely used in the coal and diamond industries to produce clean coal or to preconcentrate kimberlitic ores, respectively. Cyclone performance (separation density monitoring) techniques are varied. In the mineral industry. Density tracer tests (Napier- Munn, 1985, 2014; Davis, Wood, and Lyman, 1985) without mineral material, are widely used, although their accuracy in predicting operating cut-points becomes limited once mineral material is introduced. More recently, radio frequency tracers have been also used for the determination of cyclone efficiency (Partition Enterprises, 2017)."
