Bulk-solids handling systems are often the most over-looked component and thereby weakest links in a processing plant’s value chain. Since their performance can dictate that of the entire operation, they actually deserve special attention. When designing a liquid handling plant, density and viscosity are well known and commonly used as design parameters. Bulk solids however, differ. While the design process is similar, the relevant parameters in handling bulk solids are instead friction, cohesive strength, compressibility, and permeability. These then vary depending on the mineralogy, particle size distribution and shape, moisture content, storage time-at-rest, temperature, and consolidation pressure. With so many variables, it becomes important to characterize each individual bulk solid across the full range of representative process conditions within the handling system, plant wide – or if you are not very lucky, suffer the consequences of poor material flow. Measuring flow properties and applying them correctly in bulk solid handling system design reduces project risk, saves significant capital, and drastically increases throughput, especially when done in the early stages of a project. Sphalerite flotation using copper sulfate has been performed in the industry for decades and the mechanism of Cu activation is well established. Despite its ubiquity, many practical questions surrounding copper sulfate persist. It is not clear how iron selectivity is achieved in zinc circuits given the propensity of iron sulfides to be activated by copper. Also, the large variation in copper sulfate dosages across different plants and ore types cannot be explained. Lastly, Zn flotation with greatly reduced copper sulfate dosages attracts significant interest and has been demonstrated in certain laboratory settings, but no information is available on why those laboratory solutions have not been adopted in plant practice. Flotation studies are presented that demonstrate that Zn flotation with very low copper sulfate dosages is possible when using certain novel collectors that are not practised in the industry. However, these reagent schemes are impractical because of a heretofore unappreciated and critical role that copper sulfate plays in Fe rejection. With both very low and standard copper sulfate dosages, copper sulfate influences both Zn flotation and Fe rejection. The results highlight the multifaceted role of copper sulfate in zinc flotation and the need to holistically consider complex systems’ behaviour to understand flotation reagent mechanisms and optimise plant performance. The School, which dealt with the management and economics of the subject, attracted 75 delegates from all sectors of the South African mining industry, in addition to two delegates from Germany and one from Zambia.

The pumping of water from mines in the Central Witwatersrand by J. A. TYSER, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Min.) (Associate) This paper describes a system for the removal of underground water in the mines of the Central Witwatersrand, some of which are defunct. The water is pumped by a pump station on 24 level at E.R.P.M. to a surface lime plant and then to a surface treatment plant, where it is treated so that it meets the specification of the Department of Water Affairs relating to the deposition of water in public streams.

Spiral concentrators are gravity-based separators widely used to beneficiate coal, heavy minerals and beach sand. It consists of a helicoid trough that spirals downward in the helical configuration around an axial column. The particle segregation takes place based on size and density under the influence of gravity as the particles spiral down within the thin water layer. In the last century, most design modifications of this equipment were based on trial and error based lab-scale experimentations and empirical approach. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has gained interest in the past two decades to understand the underlying flow physics in the spiral concentrators. In this paper, we used CFD to model the fluid flow and investigate the particle segregation inside a conventional LD9 spiral concentrator. Firstly, the Volume of Fluid model was used to resolve the liquid-air interface. The liquid depth and flow field predictions for varying flowrates were validated against the experimental literature data. One-way coupled VOF-LPT model was then used to describe the particle dynamics in the spiral flow field assuming dilute particulate flow. Moderate dense particulate flow (20 vol.%) was then modelled using the Algebraic Slip Mixture (ASM) model. Four particle-phases representing particles of different sizes of dual-density were simulated, and the component particle segregation was analysed. The flotation of sulfide ores that contain carbonaceous gangue requires significant operational and chemical intervention to achieve suitable metallurgical outcomes. Carbonaceous gangue dilutes concentrate grades, alters the froth behaviour, reduces operational stability, adsorbs reagents, and reduces value recovery. Carbon management processing strategies like preflotation and depression are often presented as point solutions. Moreover, oversimplified mechanisms of carbon depressants belie their complex and nuanced impact on flotation behaviour. Optimising the flotation of carbonaceous sulfide ores requires a holistic consideration of interactions between the carbon management reagents and the processing strategy, ore mineralogy, flotation behaviour, flowsheet, and all other aspects of the flotation system. Examples are shown where conventional, simplistic mechanisms of carbon depressants fail to explain the observed flotation behaviour. The multifaceted impacts of carbon depressants on froth behaviour, collector performance, and value recovery highlight the need for a holistic approach to carbon management. I. R. M. Chaston* As a gravity concentration man in the midst of so many eminent flotation experts I feel like Daniel. However, I would respectifully disagree with the opening remarks by Mr Viljoen. First, he suggested that gravity concentration of cassiterite was not effective in sizes below 30 microns. In a paper to the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in 19621, I gave some figures for gravity concentration of deslimed material both for cassiterite and for wolfram which indicated that careful shaking table concentration of fine deslimed material could give recoveries of 75 to 90 percent in the size ranges above 13 micron. These were figures obtained from normal plant operation. It would be interesting to know if any tests were carried out on gravity concentration of the efficiently deslimed feed to this flotation plant to see what the recovery would be. Secondly, Mr Viljoen suggested that gravity concentration plants were expensive. He gives the cost of a flotation plant at R300 000 to treat a feed of 400 t.p.d. to the desliming section or 160 t.p.d. to the flotation cells. From his operating cost figures it would appear that the flotation cost is approximately R2 to R4 per ton of feed to flotation and the total operating cost about R2 per ton of feed. A table plant to treat this tonnage of deslimed feed would consist of about 30 tables and should cost considerably less to install and very much less to operate than the flotation plant. Third, Mr. Viljoen suggests that the concentrate grade from a gravity concentration operation would be unacceptably low. The paper quoted abovel showed that once a primary fine concentrate had been made, giving a suitably deslimed material, further gravity concentration could give concentrates of over 40 per cent Sn with high recoveries. Tailing from this dressing stage was naturally returned to the feed. To give these high grades, sulphides had been removed by flotation but this necessary flotation step is simple and cheap to operate and could be restricted to the final stage when the quantities involved are small. I would agree that flotation has a part to play in fine tin recovery but this role would only seem to become fully effective at sizes below 10 micron and would seem to require, as Mr. Viljoen has suggested, a mechanism for sizing which is effective down to, say, 1 micron. In the meantime it would be interesting to try tabling the flotation tailing to see if it was possible to recover the plus 20 micron cassiterite which is not recovered well by flotation. One point which has been made during discussion is the suggestion that cassiterite particles have a fully hydrated surface at normal pH. I wonder if this layer could materially affect the overall specific gravity of a very small cassiterite particle and, if so, whether gravity concentration of the very fine cassiterite would be improved if carried out in acid conditions, which would inhibit the formation of this hydrated surface. King Mr Viljoen has drawn attention to the difficulties associated with the presence of very fine particles in the flotation pulp and he has indicated that, on the Union Tin plant, they must sacrifice 30 percent of the cassiterite in the minus 7 /Lm material which they separate and lose. He has also indicated that the rate of flotation of cassiterite remained high at these small sizes. The problem arises because the very small particles stabilize the froth making it impossible to handle. These stable froths cannot be easily broken and therefore cannot be pumped and processed. It seems that further fundamental research work on the properties of stabilized froths is urgently required. We have found another difficulty associated with the presence of very fine particles in phoscorite slurries; these particles can be easily floated but with very poor selectivity. We believe that it is possible that a purely physical mechanism such as entrainment is responsible for the collection of fine particles in the froth. We have also demonstrated that the presence of fine particles in the pulp adversely affects the rate of flotation of the larger particles. For esample, we have found an increase in recovery of + 100 um material from 2 percent to 17 percent in a standard laboratory batch flotation test on phoscorite when the - 37 um was removed from the feed. Such interactions between particles are not universally recognised as an important aspect of the complex flotation mechanism. They should appear in any quantitative formulation of the flotation rate process.

A common method for the recovery of copper is by heap leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. During solvent extraction, the solution is continuously recycled, and it is necessary to remove impurities that build up in the raffinate. For the process investigated in this study, the main impurities include Fe, Co, As, and Zn. Recovery of these impurities can provide economic benefits while adhering to legal and environmental constraints. Such impurities are often removed by precipitation utilizing a neutralizing agent, such as limestone or lime, but it is also possible to remove the impurities by sulfide precipitation. Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) is used to selectively precipitate copper, arsenic, and zinc from a solvent-extraction raffinate stream. The resulting sulfide precipitate is bagged and sent to a roaster for further treatment. The design of the sulfide precipitation was investigated to optimize the processing conditions (including temperature, pressure, and residence time), the materials of construction, and the toxicity and explosive nature of the hydrogen sulfide gas produced

One of the most promising options for extraction of copper from low-grade chalcopyrite ores by heap leaching, however, chalcopyrite is refractory and suffers slow leaching kinetics and poor overall extraction due to formation of a passivation layer on the particles. The solution composition is believed to strongly affect the formation of this layer. This paper examines the effects of the major cationic species of Fe3+/2+, Mg2+, Cu2+, and Al3+ and the anionic SO42− species in acidic ferric sulfate media with a composition simulating recycle heap leach conditions. It was found that altering the sulfate, iron or aluminium concentration had significant effect on the copper extraction, the concentration of copper slightly influenced the extraction, and the amount of magnesium had no appreciable effect. Also, iron and aluminium caused a change in the sulfate concentration, and the sulfate ions had the greatest influence on the extraction of copper under recycle leach conditions

The limitations of gold-mine evaluation by P. R. JANISCH, B.Sc. (Sur.) (Natal) (Visitor) Inherent uncertainty in the choice of parameter values places theoretical and practical limitations on the interpretation of a gold-mine valuation that are not necessarily removed by comparison of two valuations on the same assumptions. These limitations arise mainly in the estimates made of cost inflation and gold-price escalation, and lead to inconsistencies in the 'league table' method of investment analysis. The choice of discount rate is also critical in many cases. An approach to the overall problem that takes these limitations into account is suggested.

This paper develops the themes explained at the previous SAIMM Platinum conference by Whittle and Burks1. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long- term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: ? An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated ? An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets ? An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated ? An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the Owner?s team.

A colloquium on 'Recent Developments in Wearresistant Materials', organized by the Technical Programme Committee: Physical Metallurgy of the SAIMM, was held at Mintek on 7th May, 1985. After delegates had been welcomed by Dr P.T. Wedepohl, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr J.D. Austin, President of the SAIMM, delivered the opening address. Corrigenda to article on copper* I read with considerable interest the recent articles on copper by Mr C.O. Beale as published in the Journal. However, in Part 11 the section dealing with Prieska Copper Mines (Pty) Limited contained several factual errors, details of which are given below.

The quality of the concentrator plant process water is crucial for high performing mineral flotation circuits. Significant metal recovery and concentrate grade losses have been noticed particularly in more closed water loops. The recovery and quality losses have started to emerge mainly with decreased freshwater usage and because of changes in tailings management towards tailings thickening, paste, or dry stacking. These changes result in shorter, closed water loops with a rapid build-up of harmful components with negative impact on the beneficiation process. Consequently, water quality has a direct link to decreased product value and sales returns. Complete cleaning or water blending might not be the right way to achieve high recovery and high-quality products. Instead, the key is to understand what kind of water qualities are needed for the flotation of specific minerals. In this study harmful substances in various plant water streams were removed and/or modified by pilot-scale dissolved air flotation. Batch-scale mineral flotation tests with the untreated and treated water were then performed by using fresh ore samples and the plant’s own laboratory flotation procedure. The results indicate that because of dissolved air flotation, the mineral flotation recoveries were enhanced by 1‒3.3%. Samples of water that had been collected underground from eight gold mines in South Africa were subjected comprehensive analysis of the quality of the waters, and their corrosivity on mild steel was measured by the laboratory techniques of extrapolation from Tafel plots and of polarization resistance. The results indicate that, if such factors as pH, Langelier index, and degree of aeration are beyond certain specified limits, the corrosivity ofthe water is affected. The applicability of the corrosivity index in predictions ofthe degree corrosion is questioned. Suggestions are included for future work involving the fundamental characterization of the corrosivity of mine waters.

Design criteria and recent developments in large-capacity Wemco flotation cells by P. KIND, Ph.D. (Clausthal), B.Sc. (Visitor) The scaling-up of the large flotation cells that have been developed during the past few years has been based on hydrodynamic considerations and has resulted in a 500 ft3 cell unit. Plant results on a porphyry copper ore show that the 500 ft3 unit is equivalent to the previously used 300 ft3 model.. . Plant tests on the use of 300 ft3 flotation cells for the recovery of phosphate, particularly from the coarse size fractions, are also described.

Feasibility studies of the on-stream analysis of lead in mineral slurries by S. K. KAWATRA. P. Eng. (Canada). Ph.D. (Australia). M.Sc. (India) (Visitor) Instruments for the measurement of lead in mineral slurries by the use of isotopes can be based on the absorption of Iow-energy gamma rays, backscattering of beta particles, or X-ray fluorescence. The merits of each method are discussed, and the reasons for the selection of the beta-backscattering technique are given. A system using this technique has been designed, constructed, and tested on samples of concentrates from an industrial concentrator.
