The methane gas emitted from coal samples collected from the conveyor belts dumping into silos was measured by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 50 pct of the total gas desorbed into a sealed can within 1 week was released during the first 24 hours. No simple correlation between the gassiness of the coal stored and the methane concentration in the silo open space above the coal was found. This was probably because the gassier coals were stored in open-top silos, which were better ventilated. Although the methane concentration in the open space above the coal pile was less than 1 pct for all 34 silos investigated, a methane measurement in the coal pile showed that high methane concentrations can exist. The methane released in the pile appears to accumulate and not liberate freely into the open space above the coal pile. Probably this gas is released during reclaiming operations, but further research is required to substantiate this claim.

"INTRODUCTION In 1942, Lowry and Junge 3/ reported the results of a statistical study of errors for the proximate and ultimate analysis of coal and coke when made according to the standard Methods of Laboratory Sampling and Analysis of Coal and Coke (D271-42) 4/ of the American Society for Testing Materials. Some of the laboratories that cooperated in the investigation reported difficulty with determination of the volatile matter of anthracite and low-temperature coke. The small number of analyses reported for these particular fuels was considered inadequate to justify definite conclusions regarding the precision of this determination.The investigation described in this report was made at the request of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, A.S.T.M. (A. C. Fieldner, chairman), to secure additional information regarding the errors of the volatile matter determination for anthracite, low-temperature coke, and subbituminous coal; the last fuel also gives trouble in this determination, The committee has recognized that the allowable differences between duplicate determinations of volatile matter for these fuels as given in the standard methods are perhaps too stringent and may require revision."

Fiber-optic technology is progressing rapidly, including the development of fiber-optic sensors for many applications. These sensors have the advantages of high sensitivity, light weight, small size, high bandwidth, and freedom from electromagnetic influences. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of fiber-optic technology to monitor mine atmospheres. This report describes a methane monitor based on differential absorption of infrared light. The monitor can detect methane concentrations as low as 0.2 vol pct as far away as 2 km via fiber-optic cable. The upper range is 100 vol pct methane. Since the system requires no electrical power within the mine, it is intrinsically safe.

Provide an improved, rugged, reliable, cost-effective automatic fire protection for mine haulage trucks. Approach Systems that automatically sense and extinguish fires on haulage trucks were designed, built, and in-mine tested. How It Works Temperature sensors mounted above the engine of the truck detect the heat from a fire while it is still small and controllable. A cab-mounted control panel warns the operator of the fire emergency and then automatically triggers the discharge of 60 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent (from storage tanks through hoses and nozzles) into the engine compartment. If desired, the control panel can be field-adjusted by changing one resistor to delay the discharge for up to 60 seconds to allow time for the operator to stop the truck and shut down the engine. The system can be assembled with either pressurized storage tanks, or a combination of non-pressurized storage tanks plus separate pressure cartridges. This pressure source option is one of the improvements of this system over the earlier systems described in Technology News No. 11. Other improvements are a simplified control circuit and an improved sensor.

The method of constant compositions involves the determination of the time required for the attainment of a given conversion at various temperatures. Heretofore, it has been used in evaluating the energy of activation only. A development of the method, made in the present study, makes possible the evaluation of the functional dependence upon composition and the frequency factor in addition to the energy of activation. INTRODUCTION Kinetics of reactions are best analyzed in the light of the mechanism, energy requirements, and forces involved in the reaction. Such physico-chemical information is not often available in solid state phase transformations. The reaction rates are followed by changes in a physical property during the course of the reaction, and repeating the experiment at different temperatures permits the determination of activation energy only. The possibility of a complete kinetic analysis by such a purely "phenomenological" approach has been questioned.4/ In this report a method is developed making possible the evaluation of the functional dependence upon composition and frequency factor in addition to the energy of activation. The application of the method to a study of solid state order-disorder changes is demonstrated.

"The ordinance of March 27, 1919, contains provisions relative to the exploration for, Ind the exploitations of bauxite in the Colony of Surinam in Dutch Guiana.Permission to explore is limited to: Netherlanders; inhabitants of the Netherlands; inhabitants of Surinam; companies established in Netherlands, and companies established in Surinam.Holders of concessions for the exploitation of bauxite are limited to companies established in the Netherlands, or in Surinam, and these must reside in the Colony or must be represented the constantly.A permission or concession lapses: (a) when the holder ceases to have the required qualifications; (b) on the death of the holder where the assigns fail within one year to prove the required qualifications.Any dispute concerning the required qualifications must be decided by the Judge in the manner to be regulated by colonial ordinance.The Governor may, after consultation with the Privy-Council reserve tracts of land for the exploration and exploitation of Bauxite, either for the Government directly, or for concession under special provisions. These provisions shall be fixed by virtue of the colonial ordinances.Application for permission to explore shall be made in accordance with existing laws. Simultaneous applications, those made on the same day, must be decided by drawing lots; but an application for the concession for exploitation has preference ovor that for permission for exploration. On notice of objection to the drawing of lots, the Governor may in his discretion, declare the drawing null and void and order a re-drawing."

In 1935 , Brown and Yant / described a microprojector ( microscopic arrangement for projecting images on a screen ) for use in counting and measuring the size of dust particles in Owens - jet dust - counter and simila dry samples of dust collected from the air . In 1938 Brown and others , described a modification of this microprojector that could be used also in counting dust in impinger samples . Microprojectors of this second type have been set up by many mining companies and others and have been made commercially available . Hamly and Pullen5/ described a modification of this microprojector for use in making rapid comparative estimates on konimeter samples and other determinations . This report contains information on still another modification named the "midget microprojector " because of its small size .

In this Bureau of Mines report, use of the photoemission of electrons to produce electric charges for the electrostatic separation of sonic dispersed minerals, which had previously been ground to pass a 43µ-opening sieve, is demonstrated. It appears that many of the oxides, carbonates, sulfides, and arsenides will respond to photoemission. Minerals least responsive are the oxides of silicon, the oxides of aluminum, and minerals that have a high concentration of these oxides. Although several synthetic ore mixtures did not yield to complete separation in a one-stage operation, it is probable that preliminary neutralization of the initial electric charges produced by powder dispersion will provide complete separation. That the separation can be carried out in air and without the use of reagents or heating, which are required in the present practice of electrostatically separating coarse granular feeds, is of special significance.

This trainer?s guide is designed as a reference manual. The purpose is to offer information and examples to skills trainers to assist them in structuring training for new operators of Walk-Thru roof bolting machines. Trainers can use this manual as a resource for helping trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. In this sense, the guide is not prescriptive. It is designed to offer information and trigger ideas on what might be done to accelerate learning to those who are new to the roof-bolting task. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. They can integrate roof control plans, company policies and procedures, and operators? manuals from the manufacturers of the original equipment into this guide. Every trainee is different and will come to the job with varying levels of relevant knowledge and skills. The trainer?s decisions on where to start, how to organize the on-the-job and classroom training portions, and when and how to offer different aspects of the training will be based on (1) a pretraining assessment of the trainee?s knowledge and skills and (2) the trainer?s experience in conducting skills training. The ?Skill Check? section might be useful for deciding where training should start among miners who have underground experience but limited knowledge of roof-bolting techniques. Every job carries a learning curve and likely has a number of ?teachable moments? where significantly new knowledge and skills can be learned.

From the most remote periods of civilization stone has been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns), or single markers, to great obelisks and pyramids or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1650 at an estimated cost of $50,000,000 or more and is today an object of unusual interest for travelers. Other magnificent memorials both ancient and modern are to be found in many lands. No sharp line can be drawn between buildings and monuments, because the larger types of memorials such as the Bok Singing Tower, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, and mausoleums of various types have features in common with buildings. However, great care must be exercised in selecting a site for a quarry that will produce acceptable monumental stone because appearance as well as quality is of prime importance. The deposit must be of uniform texture and attractive color and must be notably free of knots, hairlines, impurities, incipient seams, or other defects. Many memorials are of polished stone, and spots or streaks that might be virtually Invisible on a natural rock face will appear distinctly on a polished surface. Hence, stone to be polished must be selected with unusual care. However, less flawless stone may be used for hammered surfaces.

"Records of individual wells form the basis for the successful operation of any company engaged in the production of petroleum. The expense attached to the compilation of records is negligible in comparison with the benefits resulting from their use. There a company has not a complete system of records, immediate attention should be given to the preparation of forms upon which to collect data, and, to the collection of data for these forms. The records needed vary with each district, but for each field a set should be adopted that will best meet the needs of each property. Practically all operators, and particularly all successful operators, agree on the necessity of good records, shopping what the wells have done, are doing, and may be expected to do in the future. Any operator realizes the value of records of sales of oil and should place almost equal emphasis on the records of well logs and histories showing the east and present performances of wells. Indeed, trustworthy records are absolutely necessary for the proper operation of any oil or gas property.Complete records should be kept on each well from the time the location and elevation are determined until the well is abandoned, and the engineer should review old records often enough to be familiar with the past performance of the various wells and with the conditions that affect production. The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor was designed and developed for the specific purpose of use as a component of an instrument system that measures differential ground movement within a small drill hole in rock. Such anchors should have an unobstructed center hole, should be installed without a twisting action which could tangle connecting wires, and should be capable of being installed at depths in excess of 100 feet. The anchor has a thick-walled center tube and a thin-walled outer tube. Low-energy detonating cord, wrapped around the center tube and detonated with a mild end primer, expands the outer tube to produce anchorage. The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor can be installed easily in drill holes of any inclination but cannot be installed under water. Centering of the anchor is critical with regard to its subsequent holding power. The anchor is safe to make and handle.

Maintain good blowing face ventilation while taking deeper cuts with a radio-remote, scrubber-equipped miner. Approach A six week in-mine study of face ventilation effectiveness was made by comparing the existing MSHA-approved blowing curtain setback distance of 25 ft with brattice set back distances of up to 50 ft. Effectiveness was determined by measuring methane levels at the face and in the immediate return. How It Works Blowing ventilation systems are commonly used in mines because the high velocity air stream created by these systems rapidly mixes with and dissipates methane generated during the cutting of coal. A drawback to blowing ventilation is that the work area is placed in return air and this may create dust compliance problems for the shuttle car and mining machine operator. To clean dust from the return a number of mining machine manufacturers supply dust scrubbers built into the machine. Dust-laden air is drawn into ducting at the front of the mining machine's boom and is ducted to a scrubbing unit located on the machine's main frame. The clean air from the scrubber is discharged as a high velocity jet toward the return, generally from the left fender of the mining machine. When taking cuts deeper than 20 to 25 ft with a scrubber-equipped machine, the machine's discharge is in by the mouth of the blowing curtain, creating a concern by mine workers that a loss of air to the face could result. However, Bureau of Mines research found that the push or throw of air toward the return by the scrubber discharge jet allows good face ventilation to be maintained with extended curtain setbacks.

The Bureau of Mines, in its efforts to insure the continued viability of the domestic minerals economy, has been engaged for several years in research on the extraction of alumina from domestic, nonbauxitic resources. Hydrochloric acid leaching of kaolin is one of the more promising technologies being studied for recovering alumina for feedstock to existing aluminum smelting capacity; 93 pct of this feedstock is currently imported either as bauxite or alumina. Organics contamination of pregnant leach liquor, originating during solvent extraction for removal of iron from aluminum chloride solution formed during hydrochloric acid leaching, causes rapid deterioration of the semihard rubber lining of process equipment. These organics were removed by a skimming tank-coalescer-activated carbon adsorption system. Organic levels of less than 10 ppm from the coalescer and less than 0.5 ppm from carbon adsorption were achieved. Analytical methods employing CC14 extraction and infrared spectrophotometry were developed to determine the organic content of both the liquor and the carbon. Mass transfer zones delineated in the carbon columns provide adsorption data for the design of larger systems.

To reduce front-end loader (FEL) collision accidents by detecting obstacles in the rear blind area. The Problem Federal regulations require an audible backup alarm to activate when an FEL is backing. Since the device is constantly being activated, the warning soon becomes a normal part of the mine environment and is less effective as a warning device. Also, when several machines are working together, it is difficult to detect by ear alone just which machine is backing. Approach The Bureau defined the location for hazard detection to include an area extending 15 to 20 ft behind the rear bumper of an FEL. Then, existing surveillance and detection technology was assembled, ruggedness, and applied to the FEL's rear blind area to form a new discriminating backup alarm system employing either infrared light, ultrasonics or radar

As an integral part of the investigation of critical and essential minerals in Alaska , the Bureau of Mines examined the lead deposits in the Slana area . Four examinations were made during June , July, and August 1945 in the 200 - square -mile area immediately northwest of Slana . The settlement of Slana lies near the conflux of the small Slana River with the mighty Copper River less than 60 miles southwest of Tek Junction on the Alaska Highway . Travel through the area and the examination of the properties were conducted by a three-man crew consisting of the author , a caterpillar operator , and a laborer . An RD6 caterpillar , equipped with blade and winch , was used in breaking trail and freighting through the country . Supplies and equipment were loaded on a 7- by 14 -foot , double - end , go -devil , which was hauled by the tractor .

Methane flows and pressures were measured in mines in the Pittsburgh, Hartshorne, and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds. From the data, the permeability of each of these coalbeds was computed. It was found to depend strongly on the type of coal and on the amount of water in the coalbed, and it was found to increase with time. All of the coalbeds had a high-permeability zone adjacent to the face or rib, and the Pittsburgh bed exhibited directional anisotropy. Surprisingly, little or no overburden effect was observed.

Provide the mining industry with an easy-to-use means of accurately predicting surface subsidence caused by longwall mining in the northern Appalachian Coal Basin. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a subsidence prediction model using the novel approach of a variable subsidence coefficient. This approach had to be used because of the resistant strata types which commonly occur within the relatively thin overburden material typical in northern Appalachia. Such resistant strata precluded the use of the popular European methods that assume homogeneous overburden or overburden behaving as homogeneous from a subsidence point of view. The model is available in a BASIC computer program for use on most personal computers. The user has the options of obtaining individual subsidence calculations or may choose to develop a subsidence profile using an average overburden value. The program output can be generated in graphic or tabular form showing the location of the surface point with respect to the longwall panel edge, overburden depth, and the subsidence value.

Prevent the propagation of a fire and control the spread of smoke and toxic gas in underground mines. Approach A fire door suitable for large openings in underground noncoal mines and providing protection for openings requiring 11/2 hours of fire resistance, a 250°F maximum temperature rise, and high pressure differentials was de-signed, laboratory tested, and in-mine tested. How It Works The door is a double-acting swing type. Its two panels. connected by an overhead linkage, open in opposite directions. Consequently, high pressure differentials across the door have little effect on the force required to open and close the door. The door is constructed of 14-gauge sheet steel skins welded to both sides of a 5-inch-wide steel channel frame. The frame is rein-forced with 5-inch-wide steel channels in a horizontal and diagonal pattern. The voids between the reinforcing members are filled with a ceramic fiber insulation material to limit the surface temperature rise of the unexposed side of the door during a fire. A fire -resistant neoprene-coated fabric is used to seal around the edges of the door panels. The door is opened and closed by an air cylinder, attached to the over-head linkage and operated by lanyards on either side of the door. The door design includes an optional airlock manway for drifts of adequate width.

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4).
