Improve the effectiveness of face ventilation systems in coal mines by minimizing leakage around line and check curtains. Approach In-mine surveys were conducted to determine current curtain construction techniques, their effectiveness and associated costs. In addition, performance characteristics of extensible curtains were evaluated. A total of 77 conventional curtains in 10 mines was examined for 12 important characteristics. Extensible curtains were erected in a full-scale model and examined for operational difficulties, effects of leakage, and air pressure. Survey Results The underground mine study identified four categories of face brattice construction ranging from simple to complex: 1. Simple suspension of the curtain from roof bolts with the bottom edge lying on floor. 2. Spadding of the curtain to the roof on about 12-inch centers and stabilization of the bottom edge with wood or rock. 3. Use of vertical props and spads with a base board for support on the bottom. 4. Use of vertical props with caps and bottom boards plus horizontal brattice support boards.

During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following; questions are arising n the minds of coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when storing coal? In regard to the loss of heating value of coal in storage, tests made by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh Gas, and Sheridan Wyoming coals. The process of ?gasfreeing? has been defined3/ as "* * * the removal of oil and vapors from tanks, pipelines, and compartments to render such spaces safe for the intended work," Generally, part or all of a vessel is gasfreed for one of several reasons: Periodic cleaning; tank inspection or repairs; shipyard overhaul or major repairs; or change of cargo, Curing the gas- freeing, flammable or explosive4/ mixtures (mixtures through which a flame can propagate after ignition by an open flame, heated object, electrical charge, or other means) may be produced. These mixtures create an explosion hazard, as the pressures produced after their ignition are often great enough to completely demolish the vessel and kill all those aboard, This paper outlines a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the gas explosion hazards likely to be encountered while gasfreeing a vessel compartment. To better understand these hazards it will first be necessary to review the language used in gas- explosions work. This language is considered in the following sections. Inert gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapor, and others can be used to decrease the range of combustible-vapor concentrations in which flammable mixtures are formed. Sufficient quantities of such gases can often be added to cause a mixture that originally was flamable to become nonflammable. Unfortunately, the use of water vapor in this application is complicated by the fact that elevated temperatures are required to keep the water in the vapor state. In practice, it may be difficult to maintain these elevated temperatures throughout the space (such as a cargo tank) to be inerted for any length of time. Accordingly, where other inert gases are not available, it may be desirable to gasfree a Lank by using heated air. To do this, the combustible vapors should be flushed as quickly as possible from the space to be gasfreed. In a properly designed system, large tanks were gasfreed with a littlee as 6 volumes of air per volume of tank capacity.

Over 2 million tons of steel furnace dust containing approximately 100,000 tons of zinc and 10,000 tons of lead are produced each year. Recycling of the dusts would conserve mineral resources, lessen land area requirements for disposal, decrease pollution problems, and aid in solving our balance of payment problem. Steelmaking dusts can be pelletized and thermally treated to remove lead and zinc and to reduce the iron oxide to form metallized pellets. In laboratory tests more than 99 pct of the zinc and 85 pct of the lead was volatilized from the dust by roasting at 1,000° C in carbon monoxide. The volatilized material can be collected and treated further for lead and zinc recovery. Reduction and volatilization of over 95 pct of the zinc and most of the lead was achieved by roasting self-reducing mixtures of steel furnace dusts and high carbon steelmaking wastes in an inert atmosphere at 1,100° C. Over 80 pct of the iron in the resulting pellets was metallized.

The Act of Congress authorizing the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines became effective July 1, 1910. One of the most important duties Congress delegated to the Bureau in this Act was the study of health and safety conditions in the mineral industries. Early investigations of these conditions revealed the need of prompt Care of injured employees, as, under the difficulties inherent in their occupation, seemingly unimportant wounds if not treated promptly might become infected and cause permanent disability or even death. Many seriously injured persons brought out of mines and plants by fellow workers ignorant of approved methods of giving first aid or of safe means of transportation have been caused suffering and have had injuries accentuated to such a degree as to bring about permanent disability or death. The need of general instruction in first aid thus became apparent. BRIEF HISTORY OF FIRST-AID WORK The education of miners in the United States in first aid probably was conducted systematically first by the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania. Subsequently, first-aid training was carried on actively in Alabama and Indiana. Meanwhile, a general training campaign was carried on among industrial workers by the American Red Cross Society; when the Bureau of Mines began its nation-wide campaign of instructing employees of the mineral industries, the Red Cross turned over that part of its industrial training work to the Bureau but continued to cooperate by furnishing surgeons as judges in important first-aid contests and demonstr tions and assisted for a number of years in determining training methods.

Poor mixing of methane and air at coal mine working faces causes fluctuating methane concentrations. If these fluctuations are large enough, methane levels can periodically exceed safe limits, even though the time average methane concentration may be satisfactory. Concentration fluctuations measured underground can result both from variations in methane emission rate and poor mixing. The present paper reports on a statistical analysis of fluctuations at a constant methane emission rate, that is, on fluctuations due only to poor mixing. A full-scale model of a working face was used. Both peak heights and elapsed times between peaks were evaluated. Good mixing was indicated by normal, Poisson, and exponential distributions while poor or incomplete mixing was indicated by log-normal or gamma distributions.

The Bureau of Mines presents a theoretical solution for the stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic plate containing a circular hole whose boundary is subjected to applied shear loads over four separated arcs. The results for the applied shear loads can be superimposed on the results for applied radial loads, given in a previous publication, to obtain a complete two-dimensional approximation of the stresses and displacements induced in the rock by tunnel boring machines anchored in a circular tunnel by means of four props. Analysis of the various solutions shows that the tangential tensile stresses induced on the boundary of the circular tunnel by applied radial loads can be minimized in the roof and floor of the tunnel by the application of appropriate shear loads to each of the four props. Thus when planning tunnel boring operations, consideration should be given to the in situ stress field in the rock and the induced stresses in the rock resulting from the applied radial and shear loads produced by the props of the boring machine.

"INTRODUCTION The Congress theme ""Improvement of Mine Productivity and Overall Economics by Modern Technology"" is probably beat: addressed by the subtheme allocated to this Plenary Session. It is appropriate that .Theme 1 emphasizes the simple point that effective use of geotechnical information is the key to improving mine productivity. In essence, this means that: (1) geological and geomechanics, (rock mechanics) data must be collected in sufficient quantity and of high quality; (ii) data interpretation must be performed specifically for purposes of engineering design; (iii) innovative design approaches should be used to bring about Improvements in productivity and safety.While, each of these three aspects .may: seem obvious to any mining engineer it is a fact that the above sequence is seldom followed and as a result, mining engineering not infrequently lags, behind other branches of engineering when it comes to design creativity, efficiency and safety.. . After all, mining is still-one of the most hazardous occupations and we are gathered here to discuss, at the highest world professional forum, how to use more effectively the modern technology. This however, does not mean that mining engineers are less capable than other engineers or that their achievements are any lesser; far from it! Mining engineers are the cream of the engineering society on whose efforts depends the welfare of mankind. Moreover, they have produced minerals and coal evergrowing quantities against evergrowing difficulties. Yet, we must and can become even better because we are not making full use of the modern technology and rock mechanics knowledge already at our disposal, and. we are not being innovative enough to the full extent of .our capabilities."

The very modest-sized mineral industry of Afghanistan was burdened for another year with problems of internal strife occassioned by the presence of Soviet armed forces. Despite this, production of the few traditional commodities continued, and the mineral industry moved to develop additional mines and plants for both traditional and new products with considerable technical and construction assistance from the U.S.S.R. Among the limited range of mineral commodities for which production was reported, there were no startling changes between 1984 and 1985. Production of both coal and natural gas advanced only slightly, despite substantially higher 5-year plan goals, and cement output was down marginally. Probably the most significant development in 1985 was the Possibility that mine and/or smelter production of copper was initiated during the year.

Skin failures of roof and rib in underground coal mines continue to be a significant safety hazard for mineworkers. Skin failures do not usually involve failure of the support systems, but result from rock or coal spalling from between the support elements. For instance, in 1997 more than 800 miners were injured by roof and rib falls, of which 98% were the result of skin failures [Bauer et al. 1999]. Also, nearly 80% of the roof and rib failure injuries occurred at or near the working faces in development sections. The face area is a zone where the potential for skin failure accidents and injuries and for roof and rib failures is high because of mining activity, ground readjustment due to changing stress conditions, and the higher exposure of mine workers. In addition, failures occur where the roof and rib are unsupported. This paper reviews the roof and rib accident statistics resulting from skin failure, and highlights the incidences by type, numbers and percentage, in-mine location, supported and unsupported roof, and worker activity at the time of injury. Also discussed are the causes of roof and rib skin failures, current and improved support methods and materials for skin surface control, and machine design modifications for improved roof bolter operator protection. It also reviews the historical literature on skin failures and control methods.

Metal production rates of 42 to 45 tons per day were obtained with hollow-core anthracite briquets in an experimental blast furnace. Tuyere pressures were about the same for both coke and briquet operations, but from 150 to 175 pounds more of briquets were required per ton of metal than were needed with coke. Furnace operations were comparatively smooth, furnace hanging occurring less often than in previous tests with anthracite briquets. Dust production was substantially higher than with coke, however, and metal quality could not be controlled by corrective burdening and moisture control.

During the 1990s, the former U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a number of field studies in which the performance of different types of roof bolts were evaluated in different geologic environments. The studies used a standard suite of measurements, including multipoint extensometers, strain-gauged roof bolts, and roof bolt load cells. The sites were chosen to investigate the effect of a variety of parameters, including installed tension, bolt capacity, grout annulus, and horizontal stress orientation. Although not fully successful, the measurements provided valuable insights into each of these issues. They also showed that instrumentation and monitoring have important advantages over observational methods for comparing the performance of different roof bolting systems.

Prediction models were constructed for seam elevation, overburden, and sodium concentration for a lignite deposit in Ward County; N. Dak. These models were developed by mathematical-statistical techniques using surface coordinates as independent variables to permit interpolation between drill holes. The results suggest that sodium concentration in lignite may be predicted in advance of mining. This information is helpful to mine planning, specifically, in scheduling production to deliver a uniform product to existing powerplants.

Cerium and thorium sulfides have found use as crucible materials for melting certain radioactive metals. However, thermodynamic treatment of these sulfides has been hampered by lack of experimentally derived entropy values. This Bureau of Mines report describes heat-capacity measurements between 51° and 298° K, and entropy evaluations at 298.15° K, for cerium monosulfide (CeS), cerium sesquisulfide (Ce2S3), and thorium disulfide (THS2). The entropy values, with Literature results for the heats of formation, are used to obtain free energies of formation at 298.15°K. MATERIALS The samples used in this work were supplied by Prof, Leo Brewer of the Department of Chemistry, University of California. The methods of preparation and some of the physical and chemical properties of these sulfides were given by Eastman and coworkers.3 4/ Chemical analyses, conducted in our laboratory, gave the following results:

This report presents the findings from a l-yr Bureau of Mines program in which sulfur concrete reinforcing materials were tested and evaluated to determine their resistance to corrosion. It also summarizes the permeation characteristics of sulfur concrete and the exemplary performance of precast, reinforced sulfur concrete structures in various industrial environments. The Bureau is furthering the development of sulfur concrete technology as part of a larger effort to find uses for the Nation's plentiful sulfur resources in construction materials. Sulfur concrete is a corrosion-resistant material that can be used in acid and salt environ-ments where conventional materials fail. Penetration of corrosion-inducing agents is minimized because of the low permeation characteristics of sulfur concrete.

In studying the destructive distillation or pyrolysis of oil shales, the primary consideration is to determine the effects of heat on the organic components of the shale. The impracticability of separating these organic components, collectively known as "kerogen", from the mineral matter with which they are associated renders the problem extremely complex. The behavior of the kerogan in the shale while undergoing the heating process is probably different from that of the same kerogen if it could be isolated and treated under similar temperature conditions, and in fact the results of actual distillations have shown that the physical properties of the mineral matter in the shale may be the cause of much variation in the products of retorting. It must be remembered that the inorganic .material of the shale is a heterogeneous mixture of minerals solidified into a very close-grained compact mass. This mineral mass has a thermal conductivity different from that of the kerogen, thus complicating the problem of even distribution of heat. Furthermore, the temperatures of dehydration of gypsum end some; hydrous silicates are included within the temperature range of the shale distillation, These minerals are frequently present in the shales; and the evolution of water vapors from them will affect the partial pressures of the hydrocarbon vapors evolved from the kerogen, probably tending toward, the improvement of the quality of the oil distillates. Carbonates and sulphides which are also frequently present begin to decompose within this range of temperature, and the gases produced from them may alter the chemical constitution of the oils produced from the kerogen.

Aid mine workers in detecting hazardous roof conditions in underground mines by developing a method of roof sounding which supplements or replaces the traditional roof sounding technique where the miner relies on experience to determine whether or not the rock is sound. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed an electronic roof sounding de-vice that acoustically determines the integrity of mine roof rock by "listening" to the variation in frequency vibrations within the rock. How It Works n previous research, the Bureau of Mines found that loose rock in a mine, when impacted, vibrates at a much lower frequency and for a lower time period than does a solid slab. By quantifying the enhancement of low frequency vibrations in loose rock over solid rock, a repeatable, objective measure of the rock's soundness can be obtained. This approach was used in developing the rock stability tester.

The chemical properties of the unsaturated members of the aliphatic series of hydrocarbons are such as to render them " made to order" starting points or basic . materials for the synthesis of hundreds of important organic chemicals . The tremendous quantities of these unsaturated compounds that are being produced daily in the various coal carbonization and oil refining processes , and which at present have little value other than that of fuel , render a survey of the identity and ex- tent of occurrence of these compounds important from the viewpoint of economic utilization and resource conservation The increased need of liquid fuel and the relatively early exhaustion of petroleum resources will eventually require every utilization of liquid fuel products obtainable directly or indirectly from coal . Accordingly , the Bureau of Mines took advantage of an opportunity for examining the gaseous unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the gas obtained when a mixture of water- Collection of the material gas tar and coal is distilled in a gas-making retort . for examination was made possible through the courtesy of the Trent Process Corporation , Washington , D.C. , which was at that time carrying on at the Georgetown Gas Works , distillation of " amal gams " prepared from various coals and oils by the Trent process for cleaning coals . Kanawha gas coal ( 70%) and water gas tar ( 30 % ) from the Washington Gas Light plant were used in the " amal gam" being distilled at that time . The results obtained in this examination are presented here .

Approach Combine a 10-minute, belt-worn respirator with a stored, larger, long-duration (60-minute) attachment that can be plugged into the 10-minute unit without removing the mouthpiece. How It Works The 10-minute device will be carried by the miner at all times, and the 60-minute canister or attachment will be stored near the miner. In the event of a disaster, the 10-minute device would be donned immediately. The miner would then proceed to the stored 60-minute unit and plug it into the 10-minute unit. For the 10-minute unit, a breathing circuit was developed in which air is passed through the KO2 bed twice per respiration. The mineral industry in Burundi continued to be a minor contributor to the 1980 gross domestic product (GDP) estimated at $293 million in constant 1970 prices.2 Mineral export revenues, primarily from cassiterite, increased by a factor of 15 between 1979-80, reaching approximately $434,000 by yearend 1980. Gold, bastnasite, colombite-tantalite, and wolfremite continued to be exploited on a small scale, using manual and semimechanical methods. Despite a sharp decline in mining activities during 1979, attributed to a lack o? profitability and shortage of construction materials, the mining sector exhibited signs of recovery during 1980. The mineral exploration budget grew 32% over 1979 levels and was equivalent to approximately $42,000 in 1980. In addition, the Burundi Geographical Institute (IGE BU) was created in September 1980 and given responsibilities to collect cartographic, topographic, hydrogeologic, and other geomorphological data., SONIBUROM, the Burundian and Romanian Government joint mineral corporation, conducted mineral deposit inventories during 1979-80 and has been charged with exploiting some of these as yet unspecified resource areas. Another Burundian-Romanian effort, called Mabaya-Butahana, was initiated to search for gold deposits. Meanwhile on the Ruzizi plain, alluvial gold prospecting, with an estimated grade between 0.2 to 1.0 gram per ton, was carried out on a small scale.
