The purpose of this circular is to answer in a general way such inquiries and to relate briefly the history and work of the Holmes Safety Association to the present date .

A thermal oil-recovery experiment was conducted in the Venango First sand, Goodwill Hill oilfield, Warren County, Pa., about 10 miles northeast of Titusville. The Quaker State Oil Refining Corp., Bradford, Pa., performed the experiment with assistance from Sinclair Research, Inc., Tulsa, Okla., and the Federal Bureau of Mines. The Goodwill Hill field was discovered in 1885. Primary-production oper- ations continued until 1930 when an air-gas injection project, which is still in operation, was started. At the location of the combustion experiment, the reservoir is 400 feet deep and 30 feet thick, with wide permeability and porosity variations. The crude oil is typical Pennsylvania Grade paraffin- base oil with a gravity of 43.9° API and a viscosity of 4.55 cp at 60° F. The well pattern for the experiment consisted of 5 producing wells, enclosing an area of 1.28 acres, and a central ignition-injection well. An air-natural gas mixture was ignited in the ignition well on July 29, 1961. Ignition was followed by injection of air and natural gas at various rates. The experiment was suspended January 5, 1962, when it became evident that economic oil production could not be achieved. There was no conclusive evidence that self-sustained combustion was achieved or that combustion increased oil and water production. A slight increase in liquid production was attributed to stripping action caused by the air-injection rates, which were higher than those normally used during air-gas injection.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a 4-year research program at Uravan, Colo., on a 2-1/2-acre reclamation plot on the slope of a uranium tailings pile that had been covered with mine waste rock. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plant species, type of irrigation, type of fertilizers, and use of dust control chemicals on plant growth and surface coverage. Best grass coverage, nearly 100 percent with 240 plants per square foot, was developed in a section that was seeded with crested wheatgrass, fertilized with sewage sludge, and sprinkler irrigated. For comparison, a section that had been treated with commercial fertilizers developed 3.1 crested wheatgrass plants per square foot and 24 percent coverage without irrigation, and 8 plants per square foot and 75 percent coverage with irrigation. Results of spraying a dust control chemical were inconclusive. Russian-thistle invaded all test sections and ranged in density from 0.6 to 7.3 plants per square foot.

To develop a cost-effective tool for improving the performance of rock drilling systems used in detecting and delineating underground mine voids and for coal exploration. Approach To investigate admixtures of polyethylene oxide (PEO) at zero surface charge concentrations as drilling fluid additives to enhance penetration rates and extend bit life in rock drilling systems. Background Bureau researchers have investigated the use of chemical additives to enhance drilling performance and found that the most efficient drilling occurred when the drilling fluid was able to maintain a zero surface charge (ZSC) on the surface of the rock being drilled. Laboratory drilling studies have been performed on rock types such as quart¬zite, granite, taconite, and marble. The lab tests were conducted using 5/8-inch diameter diamond-impregnated coring bits with cationic compounds as the surface charge neutralizing additives. These studies demonstrated enhanced drilling performance, however, only at the singular additive concentration that produced the ZSC condition.

Generate less respirable dust during mining by reducing the clogging and downtime of the water sprays on mining machines, especially on continuous miners. Approach An improved filtering system, having commercially available components, has been designed and tested. How It Works The improved filtering system shown opposite is mounted on the mining machine, where It traps particles of coal and pipe scale which cause most clogging of the water sprays. Water entering the system first flows through a ?Y" strainer, which screens out particles larger than 1/8 inch diameter. Next, the water whirls through a small hydrocyclone. Most of the remaining smaller particles are removed and pass Into the accumulator compartment built into the hydrocyclone. The water also flows through a final filter. The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine if the primary gas toxicities evolved during the early (-300° C) and later (>400° C) combustion stages of mine conveyor belts could be predicted by a smoke particle characteristic. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace at set furnace temperatures of 150°, 250°, and 1,000° C, with a furnace airflow of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, included hydrogen chloride and carbon monoxide concentrations, the average smoke particle diameter (d8 and number concentration (no), and the product of the average smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgn0) Other variables included the sample and furnace temperatures and the sample mass weight loss. Results show that the inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product (ldgn0), correlates directly with the hydrogen chloride and carbon monoxide toxicities released in large quantities during the early and later stages of combustion.

The Bureau of Mines recently tested a sideboard device that is designed to act as an extension of conventional brattice, thus improving face ventilation of developing room-and-pillar-type coal mining. In these laboratory tests, an 8-foot-long rigid sideboard was mounted vertically along the left fender of a full-scale-model ripper-type continuous mining machine, rising to the mine roof to provide an air seal. It extended from the auger support frame pivot point outby along the fender. A novel water spray manifold was used to form an air seal between the sideboard and brattice. Tests showed improvement in face ventilation with the prototype device, and also demonstrated that water sprays can form an effective air seal over a fairly wide pressure range. Based on this preliminary study, subsequent improvements may make the sideboard concept much more effective, thus affording a simple, inexpensive technique to improve the effectiveness of face ventilation.

This paper describes field and laboratory investigations conducted on a dust-collection system recently designed for integral use with a continuous mining machine. The results of the field study showed that the average respirable dust concentration measured at the machine operator's position was reduced by about 60 percent (from 8.7 to 3.5 milligrams per cubic meter), and total and respirable dust concentrations in the return air were reduced by approximately 70 percent. The data indicated that approximately 20 percent of the dust generated at the face was not passed through the scrubber. The lab-oratory results showed that the overall efficiency (by particle count) was approximately 80 percent for total dust concentrations (minus 20 micrometers in size) typical of those encountered underground. Calculations based on total dust concentrations measured during the underground study indicated that the respirable mass concentrations of the effluent from the scrubber would still exceed acceptable levels even if scrubbing of all the air at the face were possible.

A new phone system was developed that provides eight full duplex communications channels over a single twisted shielded phone line, with no central switching station or line amplifiers. This system greatly simplifies installation and maintenance over that required with conventional switching systems. The system is based on microprocessor technology and digital frequency synthesis. Frequency division multiplexing is used over a bandwidth of approximately 300 kHz, and a baseband voice channel (compatible with conventional pager phones) is provided as a backup to assure communication if the multiplex features fail. Multiplex operations are controlled over a 30-kHz digital channel. The system is designed to operate with up to 16 km (10 miles) of cable plant and a maximum phone separation of 8 km (5 miles). The digital techniques permit a limited amount of monitoring and control capability to each phone. This consists of two pair of contact inputs or outputs, to be used as desired. These "flags" may be read or controlled by a dispatcher's phone.

A method for evaluating the relative incendivity of detonating cord in natural gas-air mixtures was developed. The method consisted of firing short lengths of cord in bundles to determine the number of strands per bundle which would ignite natural gas-air mixtures 50 percent of the time in the 45-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines. The relative efficiency of a flame quenching agent, potassium acid tartrate (KHT), when incorporated in both the pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) core and the polyethylene sheath, was explored. The effects of sheath thickness, sheath composition, core weight, and core composition were evaluated. The bundle method established a quantitative scale for evaluating the relative incendivity of cords. The relative incendivity determined by the bundle method was then compared with the incendivity of 100-foot lengths of detonating cord when initiated in 8 percent natural gas in the 640-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines.

A versatile torsion creep tester was instrumented with electromechanical and servomechanical components to operate automatically and unattended, producing digital printed outputs. The apparatus uses an electrical system for applying torsional stresses, and a unique angular transducer as a null detector operating a servocontrolled strain measuring system with the digital readout. The tester is designed to measure the creep in single-crystal or polycrystalline zinc, zinc alloys, magnesium, magnesium alloys, or other metals and alloys. Applied stresses may be varied from zero up to 2,000 psi in the outermost fibers of a 1/8-inch-diameter, 4-inch-long specimen. Strain readings to 0.001 degree, equivalent to a strain of 2.73 X 10-7, may be made automatically from one every 5 seconds to one per month. The apparatus has provisions for programed temperature control and special atmospheres or vacuum operation. A discussion of applications of the system to other mechanical testing apparatus is included.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the precipitation strengthening of lead¬-base alloys containing 0.5 through 4 weight-percent combined Cd plus Sb. The Cd and Sb were alloyed in a 1-to-1 atomic ratio which maintained compositions along the quasi-binary section Pb-CdSb. Tensile properties, creep rates, and stress-rupture values were obtained on alloys in the aged condition. The highest tensile strength was observed in an alloy of Pb-3 CdSb, After aging for 6 months at 90°±3° F, this alloy had a mean tensile strength of 8,950 psi with 15-percent elongation. An aged alloy of Pb-1 CdSb exhibited a steady state creep rate of 1.2 X 10-3 percent per day at a stress of 500 psi and a temperature of 90°±3° F. Times to rupture at stresses up to 4,000 psi and at a temperature of 90°±3° F were obtained for some compositions.

Develop a 22-ton capacity temporary mine roof support light enough to be easily lifted and transported manually from one place to another. Approach Several potential approaches were investigated in developing a new temporary support. An all-hydraulic, high-strength aluminum design was chosen as the best. The support was designed, fabricated, and tested in several mines. The first units, built for 6- to 8-foot seam heights, have a load- bearing capacity of 22 tons, and weigh only 55 pounds. How It Works The lightweight hydraulic support is designed for use in any temporary support situation in place of wood posts or steel mechanical or hydraulic supports. This includes use prior to roof bolting in room and pillar mining and in longwall development sections, use as head and tailgate supports for a longwall, and use as turn posts and breaker posts in retreat mining operations. The penetration characteristics of a horizontal plate elutriator and of a 10-mm nylon cyclone were evaluated. The test aerosols were polydisperse coal-dust particles ranging from less than 0.3 to 15 micrometers in diameter. Particle densities ranged from 1.3 to 1.4 grams per cubic centimeter. Equivalent Stokes diameters were measured using Coulter counter analytical techniques. Experimental results indicate that the penetration characteristics of the horizontal plate elutriator closely approximate the sampling efficiency curve defining the respirable fraction of the dust cloud recommended and adopted by the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference in 1959. Penetration characteris-tics of the 10-mm cyclone were evaluated at flow rates of 1.4, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 2.8 liters of air per minute. The data indicate that the penetration curve obtained at 2.0 liters per minute most closely approximates the sampling efficiency curve for respirable dust recommended at a meeting sponsored by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1961.

Data on compositions of natural substances are important in the study of possible interrelationships. The similarity of the low molecular weight alkane isomers from crude oil and Fischer-Tropsch catalytic synthesis product has been reported (8).3 A similar composition for the alkane isomers from high-temperature coal carbonization has been found. The composition of the C4 to C 7 alkane isomers from these three sources can be calculated quantitatively with the equations previously developed to calculate alkane isomers in Fischer-Tropsch product. An KM sting reversal of the concentrations of the monomethyl isomers from C6(2 Me > 3 Me) to C7 (3 Me > 2 Me) occurs in all three products; fragmentary comparisons at higher carbon numbers indicate some dissimilarities. Naphthene isomers in the C6 to C7 range for crude oil and high-temperature coal carbonization also have similar compositions. Aliphatic hydrocarbons from low-temperature coal carbonization processes are considerably different, consisting mainly of normal alkanes.

This Bureau of Mines investigation measured the low-temperature heat capacities of FeOC1(c) and FeC13(c) in the temperature ranges of 6 to 305 K and 4.6 to 300 K, respectively. The standard entropies (S°, 298.15 K) of FeOCl(c) and FeC13(c) were derived as 19.73±0.03 cal/deg-mole and 35.33±0.07 cal/deg-mole. A large lambda transition was observed in the heat capacity of FeC13(c) at 8.4 K. The standard enthalpy of formation (?H°f, 298.15 K) of FeOC1(c) was determined to be -98.23±0.22 kcal/mole by HC1 solution calorimetry. High-temperature enthalpy measurements (H-H298.15) of FeOC1(c) were determined to 700 K by precision drop calorimetry. Standard thermodynamic formation data and related functions were tabulated at various temperatures for FeOC1(c) and FeC13(c).

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has classified diesel exhaust as a potential human carcinogen. Though standards for diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the work place have not been established, concern for the health of miners is prompting mine operators to consider methods for reducing worker exposure to diesel exhaust. Approach One of many methods for reducing DPM being investigated by the Bureau of Mines is the use of additives in diesel fuel to improve combustion. Research Results Three fuel additives have been tested in Caterpillar and Deutz diesel engines which are similar to types used in underground mines. One iron-based additive containing ferrous picrate had no effect on emissions. A second iron-based additive containing ferrocene reduced DPM between 5 and 45 pet depending on engine operating conditions. The 37-pct reduction for an 8-minute duty cycle, which includes a wide range of transient loads and speeds, is considered to represent in-mine performance.

The local rr.ine superintendent afterwards reported tba.t a few dS¥s later this boy, Melvin Hollingsworht, found droming in a spring a. baby about three years old who bad wandered away fron.. har.e alone. The boy rescued the baby and perf'oxmed artificial re­suscitation upon it, thu.s saving the child's life. In general, mining is carried on underground, that is, in confined places where it is difficult to obtain adequate lighting and frequently in rock strata requiring much care to prevent caving. Moreover, explosives must be used in mining with the numerous hazards associated with them, and some mines give off explosive or irrespirable gases; also, ma- chinery must be used, usually under conditions much more hazardous than on the surface. These and many other considerations cause mining to be probably the most hazardous occupation in which large numbers of our fellow countrymen are employed. Prevention of accidents in the mining industry is far more complicated than in surface industrial work, even of the more hazardous types, because the different elements that enter into possible accident occurrence are ascertained more readily above ground and suitable action can be taken against them; moreover, errors in connection with prevention of accidents in surface industrial work usually affect only one or, possibly, a few persons, while in zines one human error may readily cause an explosion or other untoward occurrence resulting in the death of scores or even hundreds of persons. This difficulty in the prevention of accidents in and around mines is well-known, and most countries and States have regulations to guard the safety and, to a much smaller extent, the health of workers in mining and allied industries. In general, the State laws and regu- lations regarding the welfare of mine workers are merely a skeletonized outline of some more or less fundamental minimum requirements and are far too general to do much more than suggest some procedure which may or may not be safe or healthful. Most of them are grotesquely out-of-date as applied to present-day conditions, and none of them is adequate to protect life, limb, health, or property. Unquestionably, there is great need for a closer correlation of the laws and regulations of the various States with regard to safety in the mining and allied industries, and while mining conditions vary far too much for a standardized mine safety law applicable to all of the States, on the other hand there are numerous standard and fairly fundamental safety pro- visions which apply to all mines and which should be embodied in the mining codes of all States. Undoubtedly, these standardized safety requirements would be opposed by a consider- able part of the industry, but the ultimate effect would be beneficial to the owners, work- ers, and the general public. For many years progressive mining companies in the United States have not been satisfied to operate only within the meager safety requirements of the State laws or regulations and have adopted additional and far more effective safety procedure of their own, although com- plying also with the State laws and regulations. As a result of this forward-locking policy, zany of these companies have made astonishing progress in the reduction of accidents.

4.1 Introduction Using methods outlined in previous sections of this report, programs were written and/or obtained to: i) select best combinations of "a" and "k" for up to 8 different value parameters, ii) calculate available and unavailable ore tonnages and other statistics, and iii) produce contour maps of various parameter characteristics and available tonnages on a line printer. All the above programs are written in Fortran IV for execu¬tion on IBM 360/370 computers. 4.2 Calculation of Coal Reserves The Ore Reserve program suite consists of the following sections: (a) UNIT 1: This unit is a subroutine called by Unit 2 to determine values for "a" and "k" from the given data. (b) UNIT 2: These programs calculate ore reserves and are composed of a main program and several sub¬routines. In the following, their functions are abbreviated: i) MAIN - calls subroutines, reads run parameter variables, reads borehole data and interpolates grid node values for the area of investigation
