The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted explosion tests on various full-scale cementitious bulkheads used in abandoned mine areas to evaluate the ability of the bulkheads to withstand gas explosion over-pressures of 20 psig. Tests were performed on 120-ft2 solid-concrete-block seals of varying thicknesses and designs. Of the seven solid-concrete-block seals tested, only the standard-type seal, having a 16-in thickness, keyed at the floor and ribs, all joints mortared, wedged at the roof, and a center pilaster, maintained its integrity when subjected to a 20-psig pressure wave. After being subjected to repeated explosions, the standard seal only showed a small hairline crack and had an air leakage of 87 ft3/min at a pressure differential of 1 in H2O. Tests were performed on cementitious foam seals of varying thicknesses and compressive strengths. Explosion tests have shown that 200-psi strength, 4-and 8-ft-thick seals can withstand a 20-psig pressure wave. At a pressure differential of 1 in H20, no air leakage was detected through the 200-psi, 8-ft-thick foam seal.

Develop a simple and practical technique to measure in situ rock mass properties for realistic design and stability evaluation of underground structures. Background The Bureau of Mines has developed basic principles and techniques to determine in situ rock mass properties including Poisson's ratio, deformation modulus, and yield and failure strengths. An instrumentation package consisting of three pressure cells is installed in a single drill hole. Cell pressure response data are acquired and used to calculate and determine the rock mass properties. How It Works A test hole of BX size (approximately 5.7 cm) or larger is drilled to the approximate depth of the measuring point. The last portion of the test hole is drilled with precision bits to EX size (approximately 3.8 cm). The instrumentation package, which consists of one 3.8-cm-diameter cylindrical pressure cell (CPC) and two 5.7-cm-diameter cement-capsulated, flat borehole pressure cells (BPC's), is then installed. A complete history of cell response to changing strata loads is acquired on a continuous basis with a chart-type hydraulic pressure recorder. From these cell pressure data, Poisson's ratios, deformation moduli, and yield and failure strengths are calculated and determined.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch-and small-scale continuous flotation processing tests on waste granite fines from Georgia, to determine the feasibility of recovering usable feldspar and quartz products by flotation. Two flotation methods were utilized for the removal of biotite and other iron-bearing minerals: One was in an acid-cationic circuit, and the other in an alkaline-anionic-cationic circuit. Feldspar was recovered using an acid-cationic method. To produce commercial-grade feldspar and quartz products it was necessary to employ either two sequential froth flotation circuits or one froth flotation circuit supplemented by wet-magnetic separation techniques to remove iron contaminants. Continuous flotation processing yielded a commercial-grade feldspar concentrate containing, in percent, 3.8 Na20, 5.4 K20, and 1.10 CaO, with recoveries of 77.8, 70.3, and 64.4, respectively. The feldspar tailing was high-quality glass sand containing 98.2 percent SiO2 and 0.024 percent Fe2O3. About 42 percent of the quartz was recovered at glass sand specifications. An effective separation of, potash feldspar from the bulk feldspar concentrate was achieved by batch flotation in a mineral separation cell.

Toward the end of 1920 , the average grades of ground feldspar offered to the pottery industry were so poor and so generally unsatisfactory that many of the largest consumers decided to take active steps for their own protection . A few of the potters made arrangements to grind their own feldspar , while others asked the Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of the problem and to suggest methods of improvement . Accordingly such a study was undertaken, the partial results of which are outlined in this preliminary report . The outstanding features of the present feldspar industry which are of interest in this connection are stated below. (1 ) Many grinding companies do not own or control all or even a major part of their sources of crude material , but buy in job lots from many sources . (2 ) There is great need of more adequate engineering and chemical control over mines and mills . ( 3) ~ Out of date , inefficient methods and equipment for mining and grinding are in common use . (4) Little or no cooperation exists between feldspar producers , but on the contrary many feldspar companies are exceedingly secretive . This tends towards (a) preservation of obsolete methods ; ( b ) want of knowledge of the essential features of production , market requirements , and the relation between total milling and consuming capacities of the country; ( c ) inefficient and often mistaken trade practices ; ( d) unprofitable and even ruinous competition in dull periods . (5) The small size of many feldspar deposits precludes maintenance of an efficient organization at each individual mine . ( 6 ) Many of the best deposits of feldspar situated close to railroads are becoming depleted , which results in gradual lowering of grades , and increase in cost for better grades . (7) There is a lack of exact mowledge of the ceramic properties and behaviour of feldspar by some consumers , which results in ( a) purchase of feldspar on the basis of price alone , thus encouraging low production costs at the expense of quality , and ( b) inefficient and expensive cross- hauling of both crude and ground feldspar .

This Part is concerned with the theoretical study of UHF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a corner. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency which propagates with the smallest loss. Our theoretical results are compared with measurements made by Collins Radio Co. This work was conducted as part of the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center's investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals that are highly mobile within the sections and haulage ways of coal mines.

The continued growth of steel production in the Western States is contingent upon the development of new iron ore sources. Recent development of economical techniques for concentrating and agglomerating taconites has focused attention on the low-grade magnetite deposits near Atlantic City, Wyo., as potentially important sources of iron ore for blast furnace smelting. Therefore, the Federal Bureau of Mines has made comparative evaluations of blast furnace burdens that incorporate pellets produced from Atlantic City concentrates. The Bureau also has evaluated the relative effect of Utah coke on blast furnace performance, using a high-quality Eastern coke as a basis for comparison. This work was done in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace at Bruceton, Pa. Tests determined the maximum wind rate that could be used while a continuous stock movement was maintained in the furnace. The furnace was operated at wind rates ranging from 800 to 1,400 std. c.f.m., them maximum limit of the blowers for the 1.75 in.-diameter tuyeres used. Using a normal Utah ore burden and Utah coke, the furnace went into a tight hanging condition with a wind rate above 950 std, c.f.m. Using the experimental pellet burden again with Utah coke, the wind rate could be increased to 1,000 std, c.f.m. and probably to 1,050 std. c.f.m, before tight hanging occurs. This represents an increase of 5 to 10 pct. in the wind rate. The experimental results indicate an accompanying increase of iron production, as much as 8 pct.

"INTRODUCTION The Farmer prospect was examined by W. R. Green, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1944. As a result, studies of this property were included in a general preliminary investigation of the Etevens County lead-zinc deposits by the Bureau in 1945. The exploratory work was designed chiefly to supplement the surface examination by determining the nature of the mineralization below the zone of oxidization. The results of the small-scale diamond-drilling program undertaken at the property are presented in the following report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization our resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Pulverized high-volatile A bituminous coal was gasified with oxygen and superheated steam in a pressure-gasification pilot plant equipped for slurry feeding. The minimum ratio of water to pulverized coal that could be pumped satisfactorily as a slurry was about 1 to 1. Heating this slurry produced a suspension of coal in superheated steam having a steam-to-coal ratio greater than the 0.3 to 1 proportion that is considered optimum for pressure gasification of pulverized coal. A steam separator removed enough steam to provide ratios down to about 0.5 to 1, but a 0.3 to 1 ratio was not achieved. Gasification of Sewickley coal produced a synthesis gas containing about 36 percent H2, 46 percent CO, and 13 percent CO2, Gas output, gas composition, and coal and oxygen requirements were Virtually the same as for a pilot plant equipped for fluidized-coal feeding. Typical results from the slurry-fed plant at 300 psig were carbon gasified, 95 percent; coal requirement, 34 lb/M (thousand) std cu ft CO + H2 produced; oxygen requirement, 365 std cu ft/M std cu ft CO + H2 produced. The results showed that the two feeding methods are equally satisfactory from the standpoint of gasification. A choice between a fluidized-coal gasification process or a slurry gasification process depends on considerations relating to the coal-feeding phase itself, including capital and operating costs, manpower requirements, safety, and flexibility of operation.

"Field inspections and data relative to the use of rubber-sheathed trailing cables in mines show that much cable is ruined or its probable life shortened by being overheated in service.The length of cable required to make connection from a source of supply to a machine at the face workings may be 100 to 500 feet. As a rule, the cable is carried on a reel and unreeled as required; and thus in most cases soma of the cable is not removed from the reel. The overheating generally occurs in that part of the cable which is left on the reel.Factors that determine the heating of trailing cables are:1. The size of the conductors in the cable.2. The maximum energy to be supplied through the cable, based upon the horsepower of the motor and the degree to which the motor is loaded.3. The voltage of the supply and the variation of the voltage at the receiving end.4. The time length of current flow and whether continuous or intermittent.5. The kind of current (direct or alternating).6. The amount of ca· le left or the reel.7. The type of cable used.8. "Sand is one of the commonest materials for industrial use, not only as a building material, but in many industrial processes. The general name applies to all grades, from the comparatively impure, unsorted product used in concrete, to especially sized products of extreme chemical purity. Various definitions have been proposed, all more or less open to objection, as they fail to cover special applications. One is: ""Sand - The fine granular material naturally or artificially produced by the disintegration or crushing of rock or slag"". This does not fit the definition of sand as understood by geologists, who consider sand only as a naturally formed product. Another is: ""Sand - The fine granular material naturally produced by the disintegration of rock"". This does not take the chemical com-position into account, and for practically all uses, except in concrete and plaster products, a material composed predominantly of silica or rather quarts is implied.Sand for special purposes usually requires different methods of preparation from those where the ordinary mixture of sizes as naturally occurring are suitable. One of the classes requiring the most uniformly sized grains is sand blast sand.Sand Blast SandThe use of the sand blast has increased rapidly during the past few years. It was formerly used almost entirely in the foundry to clean and remove inequalities from rough castings. This is still the most important application, but in addition, it is now employed for the removal of paint from old surfaces, carving and engraving on stone and marble, glass cutting, cleaning or renovating the rails of stone and brick buildings that have become discolored, preparing the surface of metals for the electrolytic bath, putting the final finish to metal surfaces, and has even been proposed as a means of channeling or cutting out blocks of stone in the quarry."

Laboratory-scale tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on an argillaceous Michigan copper ore and mill tailing to determine the feasibility of leaching with acidified ferric sulfate solutions. The ore and tailings, containing 1.24 and 0.24 percent copper, respectively, were from the White Pine Copper Co., Ontonagon County, Mich. The investigation showed that ferric sulfate leaching of the ore and tailings followed a predictable pattern. Thus, with 4 hours of leaching, up to 58 percent of the copper in the ore was extracted, but prolonged leaching (2 to 3 weeks) was required to dissolve more than 90 percent of the copper. Similarly, about 50 percent of the copper in the mill tailings sample was dissolved in a few hours, but 8 days or more were required for extractions of over 90 percent.

I have been asked to speak briefly about recent progress in the mining industry of the United States, and to touch on the general advancement of en- gineering science as applied to mining. By recent, I shall mean within the past 20 or 30 years. Such a period includes a great many of the changes which are of particular interest to the present generation of engineers, and the undergraduates of today will hardly turn back farther than the beginning of the present century in their study of develop- ment of methods and processes. Also, my own professional life spans this period, and I have seen or have been aware of most of these developments as they were taking place. In my review of developments, for the sake of simplicity and clarity, I shall deal separately with improvements in metal mining, coal mining, mechanical and electrical machinery for mines, metallurgy, petroleum engineering, and safety practices. Under each of these headings I have set down what appear to me to be the outstanding changes brought about during the past 2 or 3 decades. Other points will occur to other engineers; I do not represent that the following re- view is complete; it is only intended to be suggestive. In general, improvements in mining and metallurgical practices have come gradually, the charges being effected little by little, simultaneously in widely scattered places, and through the experience and inventive genius of many men. These changes have has small beginnings, and are generally the cumulative result of many steady and unsensational progressions, which still continue. What we today might be inclined to consider the culmination of a series of betterments in mining is, of course, but an instantaneous phase of developments which will continue in the future at even a more rapid pace than they have in the past. We are looking at but a flesh of a moving picture, with an endless reel to come after we finally leave the theatre. Behind all the changes in the mineral industry, the driving force has been the increasing demand of an expanding population for more metals and minerals with which to advance civilization. An improved method and apparatus for determining the impurities in helium by preconcentration and subsequent analysis by mass spectrometry are described. Preconcentration of the impurities is accomplished by passing a known volume of helium, at slightly above atmospheric pressure, through a metal coil and trap assembly immersed in liquid helium. The concentrated impurities are then analyzed by mass spectrometry. This method can detect impurities in the range of 0.01 to 600 ppm with an accuracy of better than ±0.05 ppm at the 1-ppm level. One operator can analyze 15 samples in an 8-hour day.

Elementary concepts of seismic wave properties are reviewed to establish a framework for discussing seismic noise and its suppression. A liberal number of references is included for those who wish to pursue the topic in detail. A base motion noise level is established for a single surface seismometer. It is argued that simple array processing and seismometer burial should regularly permit us to approach this base noise level which is found in areas free of conspicuous man-made seismic noise sources. The sensitivity of the base seismic level to a number of common disturbances is presented. Solutions that promise to hold the "effective" seismic noise at a site near the base level are given for acoustic, meteorological and fixed local surface sources. Guidelines are suggested for controlling other local man-made sources, e.g. vehicular traffic, by keeping them at sufficiently large distances away from the seismometers to keep noise at permissible levels. These guidelines are speculative and conservative. They should be the subject of future study. The ability to process against general local activity, drilling, and intra- mine sources is limited. Certainly no dramatic gain is to be expected. When strong man-made and/or intramine noise sources are not controllable, detection may well be impossible to achieve, unless the seismometer can be moved close enough to the suspected miner position, i.e. via very deep holes, to compensate for the likely vast differences in strength of the miner signal and the uncontrollable man-made noise sources. However, many intramine sources, e.g., falling water, rock bursts, explosions, etc., may well preclude the existence of a hale miner in their vicinity, and therefore any need to attempt detection of a miner at such locations. The following recommendations are made to enhance the detection and location of a miner signaling seismically. They are: 1. Seismometer burial in slim holes. 2. Narrow band detection, using multiple narrow band filters to cover the likely signal band. 3. Broadband recording and analysis for time-of-arrival estimation.

A new post-disaster signalling system for the Bureau o Mines, using through-the-earth EM propagation, was successfully field-tested in the Lake Lynn test mine. Successful detection at an estimated input SNR of -30dB was accomplished using a coherent integration time of 4.46 minutes. The transmitted waveform consisted of a repeating pseudonoise maximal length sequence phase modulating a 1950Hz carrier. The receiver used a sliding-window matched filter, optimal for signal known exactly except for phase and starting time, implemented via a special purpose processor. Parallel processing permits adaptive signalling, where the detection (integration) time is determined by the actual input SNR encountered. This field test demonstrates a trapped miner detection system that is about 36dB more sensitive than a current pulsed system. This increased sensitivity permits some desired combination of increased range, shorter detection time, and reduced transmitter power or antenna-size. The combination of pulse-compression-type-signal, coherent integration, parallel-processing, and output peak-detection algorithms permit implemention of an ultra-reliable detection system. The same combination is compatible with digital Pulse Position Modulation and Emitter position location strategies.

This interpretation of the laws of Switzerland has been prepared from the best information available in ashington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consuler officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Sitzerland is a small country in which little mining is done, yet it has a voluminous body of mining legislation. There are two salt-mining districts in Switzerland; that at Bez, Canton of Vaud, belongs to the Canton but the deposit is worked by a private company; and those at Schweizerhalle, Rheinfelden and Ryburg are worked by a joint stock company formed by the Cantons interested. Iron ore is mined at Gonzen, Canton of St. Gallen, and large beds of gypsum are worked, mainly for domestic consumption. In general, however, although many kinds of minerals are said to have been found in Switzerland, mining operations are irreguler end relatively unimportant. Even during the world war only about 2,500 persons were employed in mining establishments and most of these were in under round stone quarries. On the other hand, the republic comprises 22 Cantons, of which 3 are divided, making 25 units, and in the absence of generel Federal legislation, each of these units virtually has its own distinct mining la Under these circumstances, it is obviously inadvisable to review the mining lars of Switzerland in the same detail as those of other countries which Lave been digested in this series. For the lars of individual Cantons, as well as for a more comprehensive summary of the Swiss legislation as a whole, the reader is referred to a recent German publication." The purpose of Volume II of this study is to provide a general plan for the pilot testing of two materials which could be used to tag explosives for both pre- and postdetonation identification and of tracing techniques which would thereby aid the investigator of an unauthorized bombing or explosion in being able to determine the source and/or user of the explosives. Volume I described the planning factors by which the tagging of explosives could be implemented on a National basis. 1.2 BACKGROUND Tagging explosives at the time of manufacture with a taggant material that could survive detonation, be recovered, and provide an investigative lead has been seriously studied for several years. This concept has gained widespread support among many law enforcement groups because of the scant clues that can presently be found among bombing residue.

The feldspars are a series of related aluminum silicates containing varying proportions of potash, soda, rind lime; smaller amounts of other minerals arc likely to be present as impurities. They comprise three principal types: Potash spars, microline and orthoclase (KA12Si208); soda feldspar or albite (NaA1Si308); and soda-lime e (plagioclase) fellspars. The last-named is an intermediate group ranging from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite or line feldspar (CnA12Si2O8), Minor varieties are barium feldspar or celsian and a potash-barium feldspar. Perthite is a mixture of orthoclase end albite in alternate layers. Graphic granite or "corduroy spar" is an intergrowth of feldspar and quartz characteristically in the ratio of 3:1. Cornwall stone is a natural mixture of feldspar, quartz, end kaolinite imported in former years in sizable quantity from Cornwall, England. (A similar synthetic mixture, including some fluorspar, has been blended and marketed in the United States as "Carolina stone".)

A lightweight fiberglass feed leg for hand-held pneumatic percussion rock drills has been fabricated and tested by the Bureau of Mines. Its lighter weight facilitates easier handling of the rock drill apparatus, thereby reducing the potential for back injury to the driller and in- creasing drilling productivity. Current hand-held feed leg drills of the same class are 50 pct heavier than the Bureau-devised feed leg drill, which is comprised of a reduced-noise drill and the fiberglass feed leg. In-mine tests of the fiberglass leg showed that its performance and cost are comparable to those of standard aluminum feed legs.
