The document is intended for use by front-line supervision, ventilation engineers, and mine planners. Included are discussions of jet fan characteristics, selection and use critieria, and do's and don't's for easier operation, safety, and performance. The handbook is based on research at three underground metal/nonmetal mines having cross-sectional areas of 900 to 2,000 ft2.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and tested a system called the Bag and Belt Cleaner Device (B&BCD) to reduce dust levels in and around the bag conveying and stacking process. The device physically cleans either 22.7 kg (50 lb) or 45.4 kg (100 lb) paper bags by using a combination of brushes and air jets. It is completely self-contained and is kept under negative pressure by a baghouse to ensure that dust and product removed from the bags during cleaning does not flow into the work environment and contaminate workers. The bags travel through the device on a chain conveyor, which permits any product or dust cleaned from the bags to fall into a hopper at the bottom of the device and be recycled back into the process via a screw conveyor. Once exiting the B&BCD, the outside of the bags and the conveyor are essentially product and dust free. The B&BCD was evaluated at two mineral processing plants to determine reductions with the device in use. The results of both field evaluations showed that the amount of product removed from the outside of the bags varied from 77 to 93 pet.

"In a cooperative study by the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and in five underground coal mines. Three mines utilized diesel-powered haulage equipment and two used all-electric equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations measured. The first technique, using a micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicron and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 µm. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling.Based on the results from the size selective sampling, a personal diesel aerosol sampler has been developed for measuring diesel aerosol mass concentrations. Th.is sampler uses an inertial impactor to size separate the respirable aerosol at 0.8 µm. All material less than 0.8 µm is collected on an after filter for subsequent gravimetric analysis."

Cost System The cost system reported here is a suite of computer programs which incorporates the logic and information flow structure as outlined in earlier chapters. Specifically, computer programs have been devel¬oped to: 1. compute labor, operating, and capital costs, 2. summarize cost and production data, and 3. compute the minimum acceptable selling price for coal. While the cost system can be executed independently, it is de¬signed primarily for use with the Master Design Simulator and there¬fore must conform to the overall system hardware. The computer model is written in Fortran IV for use with the IBM System 360/370 computers as well as with compatible units such as the Univac 1110 and CDC-6600. For ease in error detection and program modification, the model was constructed with a main routine and eight subroutines. The main routine reads and stores the data necessary for the cost computations and calls the subroutines in logical sequence. The subroutines perform the cost computations and data adjustments for reporting purposes. Each subroutine performs the cost computations for its particular com¬ponent of the cost cycle. The program operations are described in the following narrative outline. Control Subsystem As previously described, the main routine is a passive element, reading and storing input data and directing execution to the active subroutines for cost calculations. To those concerned in attaining greater safety to life and incidentally to property in coal mining, the meeting of representatives of the national mine safety research organiza¬ tions of the principal coal-producing countries, which was called by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain at its experimental station near Buxton, should have deep significance. It is notable, first, because it meant the friendly cooperation of countries not many years ago engaged on either side in the great World War; and second, because of the remarkable degree of agreement in the essential fundamental factors and methods of attaining greater safety in coal mines when it is considered that the questions were approached by different paths and that the applications dealt with widely differing natural conditions and national points of view. Varying views, of course, were held as to the relative importance of certain factors, but the differences were of detail rather than of principle. When the meeting adjourned it was unanimously agreed that such meetings should be continued annually and that the greatest benefit was to be derived by close cooperation in the exchange of data. Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States were represented by one or several members of the respective national research organization. It is of interest to note that this research work in Belgium, France, and Germany is supported directly by na¬ tional organizations of mine operators or owners but placed under a scientist appointed by the respective Government, thus giving the work official standing. In Great Britain the work is carried on by a Government board, consisting of persons connected with the coal¬ mining industry or in mining research, appointed by the Secretary for Mines, to direct the work of research of the Mines Department. It does not, however, come under its inspection service. Its work is supported by a penny-a-ton tax on output of coal. In the United States the mine-safety research work is directly supported by the Federal Government.

Many factors contributed to the decision to build a radiochemical laboratory at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center to investigate the application of radioactive isotopes and chemical compounds in extractive metallurgy. These reasons included the notable success achieved in biological sciences with radioisotopes, the development of reliable instruments and methods for identifying the isotopes and measuring their activities, and the commercial availability of radioisotopes in a variety of forms and known activities. The paramount reason, however, was the realization that better methods were needed for guiding and quantifying research to resolve the complex extractive metallurgy problems under study at the Research Center. This is the first of a series of reports describing the application of radioisotopes and radioactivity techniques in extractive metallurgy. The report includes a discussion of licensing and safety requirements, a general description of the laboratory and the methods used, a definition of the nature and scope of the research program, and a synopsis of the more important problems studied. Subsequent reports will concern radioactive techniques for solving specific problems in mineral dressing, hydrometallurgy, and pyrometallurgy.

The Bureau of Mines has modified its parts-per-billion helium-4 analyzer to improve the analytical capabilities of the instrument. The modifications resulted in the following improvements: (1) The analytical precision of the instrument for 10 consecutive analyses was improved to ±1 ppb at the 5,000-ppb helium-4 level, (2) the helium-4 sensitivity was increased almost tenfold, and (3) the minimum detectable limit for helium-4 was improved to 0.5 ppb. The modifications made to improve the instrument included replacing the ion-source control circuit with a direct-current solid-state design, controlling the temperature of the ion source, stabilizing and reducing the pumping rate of the vacuum system, and optimizing peak integration.

"Inhaled dust particles of appropriate size contact cells of the alveolar region.' The acute response to coal dust appears to involve a variety of cell types, including alveolar epithelial cells, interstitial fibroblasts, both resident and recruited macrophages, and cells of the immune system. Direct and indirect effects of dust, which may be mediated by soluble factors,'' can initiate acute and long-term lung injury. While it appears that epithelial cell growth and differentiation, along with integrity of the epithelial basement membrane, may play a role in the long-term response to dust exposure, little is known of the role the alveolar epithelium may play in the progression of injury. The broad hypothesis that underlies these experiments is that short- and long-term consequences of coal dust exposure involve changes in structure and function of the alveolar epithelium and the underlying extracellular matrix. Recent studies show that coal dusts exert direct effects to modify pulmonary epithelial cell-extracellular matrix interactions in vitro.3EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURESType II cells isolated on day 0 by density centrifugation and differential attachment4 were plated overnight in D MEM containing 10% fetal calf serum before exposure to anthracite dust PSOC 867 sonicated into culture medium (750 ug/mL).3 Synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins was determined on day 3 of primary culture, as detailed elsewhere. 5 Cells were removed from extracellular matrix by extraction with NH4OH and high salt. Extracellular matrix synthesis and fibronectin content were evaluated based on radiolabeling with 3 H-leucine and on Western blot analysis, respectively. Additional analytical methods and calculations are detailed elsewhere.3-5"

"INTRODUCTIONOrganics extractable from respirable diesel exhaust soot particles by organic solvents have been known for some time to be direct acting frameshift mutagens in the Ames Salmonella typhimurium histidine reversion assay (Huisingh, et al). Upon deposition in a pulmonary alveolus or respiratory bronchiole, respirable diesel soot particles will contact first the hypophase which is coated by and laden with surfactants. To model interactions of soot and pulmonary surfactant, we dispersed soots in vitro in the primary phospholipid pulmonary surfactant dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine (lecithin) (DPL) in physiological saline. We have shown that diesel soots dispersed in lecithin surfactant can express mutagenic activity, in the Ames assay system using S. typhimurium TA98, comparable to that expressed by equal amounts of soot extracted by dichloromethane/ dimethylsulfoxide (DCM/DMSO)(Wallace, et al, 1987). Here we report additional data on the same system using additional exhaust soots and also using two other phospholipids, dipalmitoyl glycerophosphoryl ethanolamine (DPPE), and dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA), with different ionic character hydrophilic moieties. A preliminary study of the surfactant dispersed soot in an eucaryotic cell test system also is reported.MATERIALS AND METHODSSoots D4 and D6 were collected at two different times as scrapings from the exhaust pipe of a diesel tractor-trailer immediately after the engine was stopped. Surfactant dispersions were made by ultrasonic probe sonicating 25 mg of commercially obtained DPL, DPPE, or DPPA into 1O ml of O.85% physiological sterile saline (PSS) for 10 min at 40 watts power. For surfactant dispersions, 2.5 mg soot was mixed into 2.5 ml of the appropriate phospholipid dispersion. Mixtures were sonicated by 40 watts sonicator probe for one min, then incubated in the sonicator water bath for 30 min at room temperature; the mixture was then incubated for one hour at 37C while being rotated continuously. Dilution series were made with saline. For solvent extraction, 2.5 mg soot was mixed into 2.5 ml of DCM and incubated in a sonicator water bath for 30 min at room temperature. The sample was then mixed with 2.7 ml DMSO, placed in a dry bath at 45C, and the DCM evaporated under a stream of nitrogen gas until 2.5 ml of liquid remained. Ames salmonella/microsome assay utilizing TA98 for frameshift mutation was used for mutagenicity testing, with and without S9 activation, as described by Ames et al (1975). Unfiltered sample extractions or dispersions were preincubated with tester cells for 90 min at 37C : 0.1 ml of sample was mixed with 0.5 ml of PSS, or of S9 mixture, and 0.1 ml of an overnight TA98 culture incubated samples were then added to 2 ml of top agar supplemented with biotin and a trace amount of histidine, and overlayed onto Vogel-Bonner minimal media plates. After 48 hours incubation at 37C, revertant colonies were counted. Solvent controls were DMSO, DPL, DPPE, DPPA, and saline. Positive controls were trinitrofluorenone (1 ug/plate), for samples not treated with S9, and 2-aminoanthracene for S9 treated samples (2.5 ug/plate). All samples were assayed in duplicate. Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assay was performed, following Lett, et al (1981), using V79 cells, of Chinese hamster pulmonary fibroblast origin. Stock diesel sample suspensions were made as 10 mg soot/ml DPL suspension, or 20 mg soot/ml in DMSO. Aliquots of these soot preparations were added to 15 ml of culture medium per sample flask to result in concentrations of 25, 50, and 75 ug soot/ml medium. After 12 hours incubation, 200 ul of 25 uM 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was added to each flask. After another 35 hours incubation, 200 ul of 10 ug/ml colcemid were added; and the cells were harvested three hours later. Cells were swollen by hypotonic saline, and fixed twice with methanol/acetic acid, and burst on microscope slides. Cells on the slide were stained with Hoechst 33258, exp"

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) was identified as early as 1918 in Bedford, Indiana in the U.S. Since then much research work has been done around the world in the areas of medical, epidemiological, engineering and legal aspects of HAVS. In Japan, much of the pioneering work in this field has been performed by Dr. Setsuo Maeda and his staff at the National Institute of Industrial Health (NIIH) in Kawasaki. Most recently, reports of work done by this group and by Dr. Ren Dong1 of NIOSH in the U.S., as well as many other suppliers and Japanese practitioners were presented at the 13th Japan Group Meeting on Human Response to Vibration held in Osaka2 during August 3-5, 2005. "INTRODUCTION Adoption of rubber-tire shuttle cars underground in conjunction with mobile coal-loading machines has introduced new problems in the control of dust on mine roadways. Where this type of loading and transportation is used, development and extraction are generally rapid, with the result that much coal is spilled from the shuttle cars during normal operation, Coal in the roadways from this source and from sloughing of the ribs is ground to fine dust by the wheels of the 'shuttle cars and by the treads of the loading and mining machines. The coal dust usually is somewhat contaminated by pulverized rock, and the mixture could not be loaded with the run-of-mine coal without undue contamination of the product even if it were cleaned up promptly.The presence of large quantities of fine, loose dust, which is constantly stirred up and kept in suspension in air by the traffic, constitutes a grave explosion hazard, reduces visibility along the roadways, and is physiologically harmful to the workmen who breathe the air. From the operating standpoint the loose material is undesirable along the roadways because it provides poor traction for the trucks and thereby increases wear and power consumption. The dust-explosion hazard could be eliminated or reduced by frequent application of sufficient rock dust on the roadbed; but this would not remedy the other difficulties, and in fact it might intensify them. Where practicable, the most direct and effective safety measure is to clean up and remove promptly all dust that forms and settles on the roadways. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is not feasible. A third Suggested remedy is to prevent dispersal of the dust into the air and to promote its consolidation on the floor by wetting the dust particles.During the past few years several mines have used calcium chloride on shuttle-car roadways to allay the dust thereon. When exposed to the' humid atmosphere of the mine this salt absorbs Moisture from the air and deliquesces, and in this way wets the dust on the floor of the roadway. In a survey conducted in coal mines in southern West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky where calcium chloride has been in use, somewhat conflicting re- ports were received regarding the merits of the application, and several operators have abandoned the practice either because of actual or assumed disadvantages. The purpose of the study described in this report was to collect and correlate evidence and, on the basis of experimental data obtained in the field and in laboratory tests, to present a clearer picture of the factors involved in the allaying of dust by use of salts."

A method is presented for the linear evaluation of adsorption data using the equations dC = Ae-rv dv and v = [jT] - q, where dC is the phase composition increment, v a calculated parameter, T the absolute temperature, and A, r, h, g, and q the constants. The value of v is calculated from the composition C for both the adsorption surface and the immersion phase. A plot of v for each phase on Cartesian coordinates results in straight line graphs. With temperature variation, a plot of v versus,[ ] also results in straight line graphs. The equations are applicable to electronic and salt equilibria.

Commercial uranium metal was electrore fined to a high- purity product using molten- salt electrolytes in an inert atmosphere cell . Electrorefined uranium that contained , after consolidation , less than 30 ppm of metallic impurities was prepared . A method of leaching the electrolyte crystals to remove the salts was developed . Cathode current efficiencies from 90 to 100 percent were obtained . Two molten- salt electrolytes were prepared and evaluated : (1 ) lithium chloride - potassium chloride - uranium trichloride and ( 2 ) sodium chloridepotassium chloride - uranium trichloride . Very little difference was found in the purity of the uranium metal produced in either system . The lithium chloride - potassium chloride - uranium tri - chloride electrolyte was preferable from an operational standpoint .

This paper describes the development of a multi-body biomechanical model that can be used to assess the risk of low back disorders due to occupational exposure to jarring and jolting from operation of heavy mobile equipment (e.g., trucks, haulers, graders, tractors, etc.) The four-element dynamic spinal model is capable of providing estimates of the force and acceleration responses of the head/neck, upper, lower, and middle torso resulting from vibration input collected in field studies. The paper also presents a method for using the model output to assess an individual's risk of low back disorder due to a specific jarring and jolting exposure.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration characteristics of high-clay sylvinite ores from potash companies operating in the Permian basin near Carlsbad, N. Mex. These ores, containing 14 to 19 percent K20 and 3 to 5 percent clay slimes, cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods because of their high clay content. A solution to this problem was shown to be the use of two-stage moderate scrubbing conditions for clay disaggregation and removal as opposed to strenuous attritioning. Bench-scale beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation from the scrubbed material resulted in acceptable product grades and recoveries. By using a coarse grind, emphasis was placed on production of premium granular and coarse products. Flotation results showed that concentrates of 59.6 to 60.4 percent K.0 values can be obtained. Continuous pilot plant beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation resulted in concentrates containing 58.8 to 59.8 percent K20 with recoveries of 69.7 to 81.4 percent of the K20.
